Hello, I am using ubuntu-server for some of my servers. Unfortunately the latest version available is 1.1.11. Is there any alternative than building it from source to get the latest dovecot version ? Thanks Stonki

[Dovecot] Rotating the dovecot log file

Using FreeBSD-7.2, I am attempting to configure the system newsyslog utility to rotate the dovecot.log file. I would prefer to use the system utility rather than the one described on the dovecot wiki for rotating the file. Unfortunately, it is not working. This is the error message that is spawned: newsyslog: illegal signal number in config file: /var/log/dovecot.log root:wheel 0666 1 * $M1D0 CJ /var/run/dovecot/master.pid USR1 Does anyone have an idea how to get this to work? I was glancing at my logwatch report when I noticed: dovecot: IMAP(robinmail): fchown(/home/robinmail/mail/.imap/INBOX/dovecot.index.log.newlock, -1, 10(wheel)) failed: Operation not permitted (egid=100(users), group based on /var/mail/robinmail): 1 Time(s) dovecot: IMAP(robinmail): fchown(/home/robinmail/mail/.imap/INBOX/dovecot.index.tmp, -1, 10(wheel)) failed: Operation not permitted (egid=100(users), group based on /var/mail/robinmail): 3 Time(s) So what's going on here? :) I am fairly sure I never had them before. Patch by Pascal Volk. - Added support for SORT=DISPLAY IMAP extension. - Added doveadm who command for listing currently logged in users. - ssl_ciphers_list: Disable anonymous and export ciphers by default. - mail_chroot can now contain %variables (e.g. /home/%u) - fixed a bad maildir crashing bug - ssl-params is now run with +15 priority when generating the ssl parameters - Redesigned how login processes log in and create imap/pop3 processes. This fixes several settings and some other problems, plus it's now also possible for a single imap/pop3 process to handle multiple connections. Some day perhaps there should be a new service in the middle that keeps track of existing connections and forwards new ones to right mail processes. v2.0.beta1 TODO list: - master.conf has to be somehow put into defaults, so doveconf -n doesn't show its contents. an example master.conf would be minimal and show only those settings that admin might want to change (and those would show up in doveconf -n) - verbose_proctitle=yes is now quite useless because of the imap/pop3 process creation change. Probably enable linux-proctitle-hack and start changing the proctitle much more often. For example it could contain the command that's currently being run by user. And login processes could contain how many client connections they currently have. Hi, one Fedora user complains about not some troubles after update to dovecot 1.2. He suspects wrong capability information given by dovecot 1.2 In dovecot.conf he uses imap_capability= option. [Dovecot] HA Dovecot Config?

Hi! I'm currently running Dovecot 1.1.8 on a HP server using CentOS 5.2 as my IMAP server, receiving mail from postfix, and also using squirrelmail as the frontend. As I look at upgrading the mail server, I'd like to change to a higher availability configuration (where the server can fail and I don't have to reconfig my imap users). For the SMTP that's easy, because I can use multiple MX records, and I can redirect a port forward from one server to another. But IMAP doesn't have the same functionality, because it's the storage that matters. What's the "best" way to do that? Clustered servers using a SAN? NAS? some sort of appliance in front? [Dovecot] Need a little shadow to MySQL conversion help

Excuse me for being stupid and confused. I'm trying to convert my dovecot install from passwd-file to mysql. I have a single table called "users" that has 3 fields, user_name, domain_name and password. The data came from passwd/shadow files so it uses the same password encryption as the shadow files do. The directory where the email is stored is calculated elsewhere and not stored in the database. The UID and GID are both mail for all virtual users. The user logs in passing the full email address and the password. So - what would be the config for using MySQL? Do I even need a userdb? If so - what would it be? Thanks in advance.

[Dovecot] VZW Blackberry BIS problems?

Ever since Columbus day things have been strange with my two dovecot servers, according to my Blackberry users. We do not have a BES just the standard BIS that comes with a personal account. Several people have told me that since that Monday that they get occasional duplicate copies of messages which only appear singularly in their Maildir inboxes. I myself even called VZW and got transferred to RIM themselves where they 'reset' my account; (same as me going into the BIS server and deleting and adding again) only to have the same thing happen; again occasionally.. I'm assuming this is a BIS issue of some sort, but I can't tell. After looking on the wiki I didn't see anything that says "BIS users look here for tips.. " So I'm assuming there aren't any; I think it should just work with the IMAP server.. Any help would be appreciated as everyone thinks this is 'our problem' and "if we had an exchange server we wouldn't be having these problems.." Thanks in advance..

Hi All I'm trying to implement public folders. My dovecot -n readout is at the bottom. I do not see resumes. Hello, Dovecot documentation states that the "random redirects to multiple servers" NFS solution is to be avoided and I'm investigation the actual risks of it and a way to put it to test. I'm running dovecot-1.2.6 with Maildir (indexes, mailboxes and control files are all on NFS) and I'm using procmail instead of deliver as the LDA. 1. Documentation says : "Dovecot locks the maildir while doing modifications to it or while looking for new messages in it" and then mention the "dovecot-uidlist.lock" dotlock file. a) if that file fcntl'ed in addition (i.e. dotlocked + fcntled or just dotlocked) ? b) is that file THE way to lock the Maildir mentionned above or is it just something else used only for updating that particular file (i.e. is Maildir locked in some way + dovecot-uidlist.lock created or just dovecot-uidlist.lock created) ? 2. Documentation says : "NFS caching is a big problem when multiple computers are accessing the same mailbox simultaneously" I guess it's because of the dotlocks files and not fcntl locking ? Is there anything else than dovecot-uidlist which is dotlocked ? If yes, is it dotlocked only or dotlocked and fcntled ? 3. Documentation says : "Dovecot v1.1 flushes NFS caches when needed if you set mail_nfs_storage=yes" How can a program flush the NFS caches ? By which (system) call ? 4. Documentation says : "Besides the NFS cache problems described above, mailbox contents can't be cached as well in the memory either." Is it about in-memory indexes or part of indexes loaded into memory ? 5. How can I torture-test concurrent access to the same mailbox through 2 dovecot servers ? I don't see imaptest.c anymore on http://dovecot.org/tools but I see 2 nfs_test ? Is there some command line options I should use ? 6. when and why can a random redirect to multiple server can cause mailbox corruption ? On flags only or on content as well ? [Dovecot] deliver+sieve: Destination address (-a) parsing changes

When I upgraded my old, long running dovecot 1.1 to newer dovecot-1.2.4 + doevecot-sieve- 0.1.12 I observed a change in destination address (-a) parsing. Old behaviour: When Timo introduced this feature (http://www.dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2007-September/025813.html) it was possible to hand over only the detail part. In my sendmail configuration I used "-a +$h", where $h contains the detail part and may be empty. By default sendmail can call the delivery agent with the following information: $u: The recipient user (always set) $h: Detail part, may be empty $g: The sender address (relative to the recipient). New behaviour: The current sieve version needs a complete address with local- and domain-part. Otherwise we get a warning like deliver(user): sieve: envelope recipient address 'user' is unparseable. The problem is, that the domain part is not always available, e.g. for local delivered emails. This is the main problem, although the setup could be simplified if deliver would accept the old syntax. I'm going to make modifications to sendmail to be able to have all address information available, but this will not solve the problem with missing domain. Now comes my question: Is it better to enhance the address parsing in sieve plugin or should I use a wrapper around deliver? This issue is resolved by replacing : maildir:~/Maildir:INDEX=/tmp/QUOTA/index/%u:CONTROL=/tmp/QUOTA/control/%u with maildir:~/Maildir any idea on the reason of these duplicates or workarounds to prevent them while keeping indexes in /tmp. [Dovecot] IMAP goes down from time to time

My problem is that our Dovecot IMAP is stopping from time to time with no info in the log, i just realize about this when our support person call me saying that the whatsup monitor is showing the IMAP4 process down. Hello, i try to understand, how it works (IDLE). Try to get it successfully work with my new Palm Pre ;-) which looks like to have a lot issues wir imap... so i'll blame not dovecot for the issues. Sent a mail, from googlemail. processed by dovecot ad 12:11. what me now confusing, is, that there in the out-log is nothing visible, I expected, to see there was sent an notification, there was a new mail. Do i miss something? After arounde 15 minutes the Palm sent a "DONE" and reconnect. then the messages was received. Hello, since updating two of our backup mailservers from dovecot 1.1.16 to 1.2.4 i get the following errors from dovecot-deliver when receiving (smtp) mail. Hi, the conversion from courier was done without problems, but now I have a problem with my auth config. Good Afternoon, I have my virtual users stored in an Active Directory database. As far as mail info goes the 2 important fields are: mail (their primary email address) and otherMailbox (a multivalue attribute containing their mail aliases). Right now all email addresses belong in the same domain and there are no immediate plans to change this. If I use Postfix to do the lookups and delivery only using Dovecot for passdb Pam driver and a static userdb then everything delivers fine to mail and otherMailbox addresses. I have been working on switching over to Dovecot's deliver process in order to integrate sieve capability. I have configured userdb ldap and passdb ldap in Dovecot and have set up master and client sockets. Before I describe my problem let me show you my configuration (as I think the dovecot-ldap.conf in particular needs to be explained). This reason for this is that this ldap configuration is used for both authentication purposes and local delivery, so its not always being passed the domain info (for authentication it gets the users IP address). Since all my users are on the same domain I can statically set this here. This setup authenticates users to imap and pop (users use their sAMAccountName as their username when they log in), and pulls their correct home directory. Checking mail is not a problem at all. Further, this setup will deliver mail correctly to mail addressed to the value in the "mail" attribute. The problem seems to be in the otherMailbox attribute, it cannot lookup the users sAMAccountName based off of the otherMailbox field. Sending to some of those attributes worked, others didnt. I could use the "sn" and "givenName" attributes, but "postalCode" and "title" would give the same error as otherMailbox. Hello Dovecot users, After about a month of silence, I finally release a new version of Pigeonhole Sieve. This release fixes problems in the multiscript support and improves the body extension further towards RFC compliance. The body extension still needs work, however, since some content types still give erroneous results. Changelog Sieve v0.1.13: + Body extension: implemented proper handling of the :raw transform and added various new tests to the test suite. However, :content "multipart" and :content "message/rfc822" are still not working. + Fixed race condition occuring when multiple instances are saving the same binary (patch by Timo Sirainen). + Test suite: added support for testing multiscript execution. - Made compiler more lenient towars missing CRLF at the end of the script in a hash comment. - Body extension: don't give SKIP_BODY_BLOCK flag to message parser, we want the body! (patch by Timo Sirainen). - Fixed handling of implicit side effects for multiscript execution. - Fixed bugs in multiscript support; subsequent keep actions were not always merged correctly and implicit side effects were not always handled correctly. - Fixed a segfault bug in the sieve-test tool occuring when compile fails. - Fixed segfault bug in action procesing. It was triggered while merging side effects in duplicate actions. - Fixed bug in the Sieve plugin that caused it to try to stat() a NULL path, yielding a 'Bad address' error. I am thinking of trying out dbox format. I am currently using maildir. Is it possible for me to switch just one user account to dbox while keeping all of my other users on maildir? If so, how would I go about doing that? [Dovecot] migrate courier to dovecot script - questions about directory structure

Hi all, Im in the process of moving about 7000 users across from courier to dovecot. Both Maildir setups. The migration script works a treat, but I need a slight change to it. Couriers directory structure looks ike this: /home/vmail/<domain.com.au>/<username>/cur/ /home/vmail/<domain.com.au>/<username>/new/ /home/vmail/<domain.com.au>/<username>/tmp/ /home/vmail/<domain.com.au>/<username>/maildirsize /home/vmail/<domain.com.au>/<username>/courier* etc.. Dovecot looks like this: /home/vmail/<domain.com.au>/<username>/Maildir/cur/ /home/vmail/<domain.com.au>/<username>/Maildir/new/ /home/vmail/<domain.com.au>/<username>/Maildir/tmp/ So the issue is, there is an additional Maildir directory in the structure. Now the migration script works fine, however when the migration is completed, I have to manually add the Maildir directory into the structure, which is going to take a little too long :) Is there something in the script that can add this ? Is there a way to perhaps use the script to add the Maildir part ? My initial plan was to copy the entire /home/vmail/<domain.com.au>/* across to the dovecot server and run the migration script. However, without the Maildir directory in the structure it won't work. Has anyone run into this issue ? The AuthDatabase/LDAP documentation on the Dovecot Wiki says "When connecting to AD, use port 3268". Port 3268 is used for Global Catalog searching. By default the Active Directory Global Catalog wouldn't include attributes like otherMailbox, but would include mail and sn. The solution here would be to either use port 389 and search the domain like ldapsearch or to add the otherMailbox attribute (or any others I want to search on) to the global catalog. It might be worth updating the wiki to mention the reasoning behind using port 3268 and the implications it can cause. Thanks for the help!

[Dovecot] Sendmail and Dovecot Delivery to Virtual Users

I'm new to dovecot and sendmail and my server doesn't forward mails to 'dovecot deliver' at all. I was reading http://wiki.dovecot.org/LDA/Sendmail and this http://www.dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2009-June/040353.html from the mailling list but I could figure it out myself. I someone could point me into the right direction. I'm confused with the config for LDA. Basically what I want is every message coming in go to 'deliver' except if there's no dovecot user of course. I'm using 'local_procmail' feature right now, but I tried to comile the dovecot Mailer also. Anyway the dovecot 'deliver' itself works fine. But I cannot receiving emails or messages don't go anywhere. All the debugging I do with telnet right now. first I got 'User Unknown' errors in the maillog so I thought I just missing an alias/virtuser entry. So I create one and forward those to procmail. But now the messages don't go anywhere and the status is sent and I don't seem them in the /var/log/dovecot-deliver.log either, so they are stuck in the middle somewhere. If there is a separate sieve mailing list let me know. But have question if someone else has done this or not. Right now I have web form people use to setup their vacation replies using Sieve (1.1.6). The form alows them to set what they want their reply address to be, whether to send the reply once, weekly or bi-weekly. I would like to setup another option to let them set the date in which to de-active the vacation replies automatically. Right now they have to remember to log back into the form to turn off the vacation reply. Has anyone set something like this up? -- C. J. Hello. I asked for help on #dovecot but one suggestion I got was setting sieve variable explicitly but unfortunatelly that didn't help. I'm trying to set up sieve to be able to use vacation module. So in the lda section I put: mail_plugins = sieve And in plugins section: sieve = ~/.dovecot.sieve Then I put .dovecot.sieve file in the user's directory. [Dovecot] Better APPEND performance

Moving a large number of messages into an IMAP folder on a dovecot server takes quite a long time. This is a popular operation for users migrating their stored messages from their old mail servers through a mail user agent, and it causes a poor first impression of dovecot. I'd like your help to speed this up. I have studied this problem in recent versions, including 1.1.[17-19] and 1.2.[4-6] but I'll focus on 1.2.6, using Maildir++. It seems to be caused by O(n^2) behavior in maintaining the UID list, where n is the number of messages. The client selects a folder then sends thousands of individual APPEND commands (no use of multiappend unfortunately). These cause dovecot to behave as follows: 1. For every other APPENDed message, dovecot appends the new UID to the list quickly. No problem here, this is fast. 2. For every other other APPENDed message, dovecot scans the entire UID list. This is an O(n) algorithm. Since it happens every n/2 times it causes O(n^2) behavior across n consecutive APPENDs. More specifically, 1. APPEND a message to a folder that already contains 30,000 messages. maildir_uidlist_refresh_fast_init() takes the fast path. 2. APPEND a second message to the same folder. maildir_uidlist_refresh_fast_init() takes the slow path: it populates the uidlist->files hash table with all the UIDs, checking for duplicates. At the end of the command maildir_uidlist_deinit() destroys the hash table. Note how this APPEND takes much longer than #1. 3. APPEND a third message to the same folder. Just like #1. 4. APPEND a fourth message to the same folder. Just like #2, and since #2 destroyed the hash, it has to do all that work over again. 5. And so on. What can be done to make maildir_uidlist_refresh_fast_init() choose the fast path more often?

There are still a couple of things left to do, but in general it should work for most people. I started using it for my own mails a few days ago and it seems to work without errors. Largest changes since v1.2: * Global ACLs are now looked up using namespace prefixes. For example if you previously had INBOX. namespace prefix and a global ACL for "INBOX.Sent", it's now looked up from "INBOX.Sent" file instead of "Sent" as before. + Redesigned master process. It's now more modular and there is less code running as root. + Configuration supports now per-local/remote ip/network settings. + dsync utility does a two-way mailbox synchronization. + LMTP server and proxying. + Added mdbox (multi-dbox) mail storage backend. + doveadm utility can be used to do all kinds of administration functions. Old dovecotpw and *view utilities now exist in its subcommands. Some things left to do: - Do something about backwards compatibility with v1.x. Either make it read v1.x config files or provide some config conversion utility. - dsync still has some bugs - config process is a bit too slow. config handling in general could use some caching all around. no need to ask configuration for each login unless there are per-remote-ip settings. - some kind of an optional connection policy server could be useful. mainly to finally implement tcp-wrappers support. - mail_uid, mail_gid, mail_chroot settings don't really work now. I think this actually needs a bit larger change, which is probably a good idea in any case: After successfully authenticating, login process needs to get imap/pop3 process executed. Currently this is done by transferring the connection fd to master process, doing userdb lookup and then forking and execing the imap/pop3 process. The new behavior I'm thinking is that after auth, login process would connect to imap/pop3 unix socket in the login/ directory. That would cause master process to fork a new imap/pop3 process (running as root). Login process would send the necessary auth information via the unix socket, possibly transfer also the fd, and imap/pop3 would do the userdb lookup and then drop privileges. This change has some pros: - Master process will no longer temporarily hold some extra fds and use extra memory during auth lookups. If auth process is hanging these could cause problems. - Master process will no longer have any special auth handling code and I can remove type=auth-source and type=auth services. - Of course fixes the mail_* setting issue, because all of this is now done by imap/pop3 process, which knows about these settings. - Creating support for "multiple imap/pop3 post-login connections in a single process" should be pretty easy to implement with this. The imap/pop3 unix socket just needs to be listened by a new process in the middle that keeps track of what imap/pop3 processes exist and can redirect the new connections to those. But also some cons: - drop_priv_before_exec=yes no longer works, unless the uid/gid is hardcoded to the service {} block. - Each imap/pop3 process needs to do a connect() to auth server at startup, adding a bit to the latency.

Hi, I have a working dovecot/postfix/sieve configuration: Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Dovecot 1.2.6 Sieve 0.1.12 Postfix 2.5.1 The server is configured to host multiple domains. All mail delivery, logins and aliases work absolutely perfectly. There's only one weirdness: the 'From' address in vacation responses. If a message is sent to user(a)hosteddomain.com the response comes from user-hosteddomain.com(a)hostingservername.com Obviously it's doing what one would expect in that it's taking the username (user-hosteddomain.com) and appending the local host name (hostingservername.com) This isn't great from the perspective of the hosted user, however, who'd much rather their vacation message was sent from their actual email address. Clearly I can modify this by using a ':from' statement in each relevant sieve file, but I can't rely on users' mail clients to set this (as not all do) and the webmail client in use on the server doesn't set this. I can almost certainly implement some kind of hack using this, but I'd rather not. So how does sieve determine the from address to use if it's not explicitly set in the sieve script for the user, and how can I direct sieve to determine the address differently, preferably with a central configuration option that will apply to all users regardless of domain.....? Hi, I'm looking at doing some testing for a little internal IMAP server. Basically use fetchmail (or some such thing to bring in mail) so users have a local IMAP server to connect to. I'm interested in trying out mdbox, but since I'd have to use dovecot 2.0 with it I thought I'd just check what peoples' experience with 2.0 is like so far? Is it reasonably stable already? Is there also a page showing the differences in config for dbox over maildir? Or is it simply just the change in mail_location and nothing else? Thanks Guy -- Don't just do something...sit there!

And it still "pending" somehow to wait a response from dovecot. But when ldap is connected to the system, these pending connection (from user) is still pending .... so it makes the "request queue is full". Isn't it? Should I do something to work-through or work-around this problem? May I did something wrong in my configuration. Below is usual information may it helps us analyze the problem! Hi all, I'm experimenting with the expire plugin and seem have run into a small problem. I am using Dovecot 1.2.4 on a test server. The config is taken mostly verbatim from the expire plugin wiki page [1], using MySQL as a database. See below for detailed output. Namespace "private" has "/" configured as mailbox separator: namespace private { separator = / prefix = inbox = yes } The "expire =" section from dovecot.conf thus looks like this: plugin { expire = Trash 7 INBOX/Spam 8 INBOX/Spam/To-Discard 3 ... } Three mailboxes/folders are kept track of: Trash, INBOX/Spam and INBOX/Spam/Spam-To-Discard (this one holds messages that scored high enough to very unlikely be legitimate and should be deleted soon). Or am I doing anything wrong? I'd rather not change the separator from "/" to "." in all the namespaces if that can be avoided. Hi, I was trying to create complete rpm package for my system, containing dovecot 1.2.5 intregrated with dovecot-sieve and dovecot-managesieve. Finally I succeeded and it works great, but I found something that might be treated as wrong behaviour... [Dovecot] Questions regarding dbox migration

It has been my wish to move to dbox for a long time hoping to reduce the number of writes which is really killing us. Now I wonder what may be the best way of doing so. I'm considering some sort of intermediate migration where the existing Maildir users are changed to single-dbox and then later upgraded to 2.0 and changed to multi-dbox when it becomes stable. But is this a reasonable task to perform on a production system or at all? The alternative is to wait for 2.0 to become completely stable and then go all the way at once. I would however much prefer to take it one step at a time and I think it would be safer to start out with single-dbox as it appears less complex. Now the big question is whether multi-dbox and single-dbox are compatible formats. If a Maildir->dbox migration is made on a system running dovecot v. 1.1, would it then be trivial later changing to multi-dbox after upgrading to 2.0 or is a completely new migration then needed? Would this scenario be much different if the system is upgraded to version 1.2 before the change to single-dbox? Kind regards, Mikkel

[Dovecot] dovecot 1.2.6 fails to build with openssl < 0.9.8

The update of ssl_proxy_get_security_string() in dovecot 1.2.6 has broken compatibility with openssl < 0.9.8 (e.g. on RHEL4) because the functions SSL_COMP_get_name and SSL_get_current_compression don't exist until openssl 0.9.8 (build fails at link time due to these symbols being unresolved). I've worked around this by reverting the function to the 1.2.5 version for now but I think a better solution would be to have a configure test for these functions and only include the SSL compression details when they're available. [Dovecot] is it possible to fetch messages for multiple users using a single account?

Dear list, I am running dovecot with LDAP. Each account has email in form abc(a)example.com, and messages are stored at /var/vmail/abc/Maildir. This is an external mail server, and I would like to use a cron job to fetch all messages to an internal server which has slow internet connection. It seems getmail supports multidrop retriever which might fit the bill. However I could not figure out how to set up an account that can be used to fetch all messages for all virtual accounts. Hello, I've switched from courier-imap to dovecot to benefit from the virtual folder feature. I'm using dovecot 1.2.6 on Gentoo Linux. However, I', getting the message "[NONEXISTENT] Mailbox doesn't exist: <name>" from Thunderbird when I try to access any virtual folder. The relevant setup: mail_location = maildir:~/.maildir namespace private { separator = . inbox = yes hidden = yes list = yes } namespace private { prefix = virtual. separator = . location = virtual:~/.maildir/.virtual } I then created the folders ~user/.maildir/.virtual and ~user/.maildir/.virtual.test and placed a file in .virtual.test with the contents ====== * all ====== After a dovecot restart I'm getting the error message: "[NONEXISTENT] Mailbox doesn't exist: test" Where did I make the mistake in the configuration? [Dovecot] Missing folders

I've recently had a oops with the system I was running dovecot on so have had to move it to a new machine, I've been able to retrieve the mbox files from the old machine, built the new machine and over wrote the new mbox files with the old one in maildir, connecting to the server via imap woeks but I can only see the mail in the inbox from the old mbox files, emails in sub directories (the sub directories arn't there), is there some command I need to run to get it to pass the mbox file to find the folders or it there another file I need to transfer form the old machine. (I'm assuming that all the emails for a user, including those in subfolders are within the single mbox file, particularly as I'm is very large) Thanks John

[Dovecot] Dovecot lock problem

Hi, We have a few users experiencing locking problem. When starting Thunderbird, there is no new emails in Inbox. Dovecot createa a lock file /var/spool/mail/<user>.lock. It never completes openning Inbox. If closing the mail client, the open imap session does not get closed, nor the lock file get deleted. Here are the errors in log: dovecot: Oct 13 11:18:35 Warning: IMAP(user1): Our dotlock file /var/mail/user1.lock was deleted (kept it 88 secs) dovecot: Oct 13 11:18:35 Error: IMAP(user1): file_dotlock_delete() failed with mbox file /var/mail/user1: No such file or directory We are running Dovecot 1.1.2. All of the mailboxes on this system are in MailDIR format. None of the users delete mail off of the server after POPing their accounts. This is the present setting: expire = Trash 7 Spam 30 expire_dict = proxy::expire Is that correct for MailDIR style mailboxes? It doesn't appear correct; however, I have not been able to find any specific documentation on expire with MailDIR style mailboxes. [Dovecot] Dovecot 1.2.6 segfault in imap_fetch_begin

We recently upgraded from Dovecot 1.2.4 to 1.2.6 (with the sieve patches of course). Everything has been running quite well since the upgrade. The occasional issue with assert-crashing when expunging has gone away. However, one of our users seems to have triggered a new issue. She's been the only one to see it, but whenever she logs in, her imap process segfaults immediately. It appears that the crash is a null pointer deref in the array library, but I'm not sure what code is at fault for calling in without checking array validity... or even if I'm on the right track. [Dovecot] Deliver - can't connect to .../auth-master

Dovecot version 1.1.11 Hi all, I'm having real trouble getting Getmail, which is configured to pick up mail from my ISPs mailhost, to put the mail in our local Maildirs, through Deliver. We're using virtual users so, if I am understanding correctly, Deliver needs to fetch this information from /var/run/dovecot/auth-master. The trouble is that Deliver doesn't seem to have the correct privileges to do so. Whenever Getmail tries to pass the mail to Deliver, the line: Oct 15 15:21:04 Domain deliver(user(a)domain.com): Can't connect to auth server at /var/run/dovecot/auth-master: No such file or directory appears in the Mail.err log. So far I've tried: # - Changing the privileges of the whole /var/run/dovecot/ folder, and its sub folders. I understand that this is only a workaround, as Dovecot changes the privileges back on restart, however it doesn't seem to work anyway. It changes the log result from 'No such file or directory' to 'Permission denied' (and sometimes 'Connection refused'). # - I tried setting the location of auth-master to /home/manager/dovecot in the dovecot-postfix.conf config files (and the dovecot.conf config, just in case), so I could control access to it, and its permissions, more closely. Again, no luck. The log file still shows that it is trying to access it through /var/run/dovecot ~ not sure why (I even went to the lengths of doing a search for /var/run/dovecot in the config files, to make sure I hadn't missed a rogue mention; nothing). Interestingly the file auth-master is created in the correct folder I've configured, but the log results still stay the same. Thanks in advance for any help getting this up and running.

Greetings, Can Dovecot can handle separate authentication for receiving mail (IMAPS) and sending mail (SMTPS)? In the past, we used Dovecot IMAP for the receiving part and Cyrus SASL for the sending part. This allowed us to use two passwords with mail. Cyrus has grown too old and isn't useful anymore. Can Dovecot give us this functionality: two passwords, one for IMAP authentication and one for SASL authentication? If so, could you point me in the right direction to get this working? [Dovecot] Investigating suspected cache corruption

Hi All, I'm running Dovecot 1.1.11 for a site of about 7000 active users with a Squirrelmail frontend. We migrated from Courier (big shout to everyone who worked on the wonderful part of the Dovecot wiki that deals with Courier migration) and I have been extremely happy with the performance gains Dovecot has given us. Not only is the IMAP part of Squirrelmail faster, but our same hardware is under far less stress than it was before the migration. To date, the only problem we have experienced is a seemingly random but significant slowdown in Squirrelmail's loading of the messages in a user's Inbox. Each time, I have been able to fix the problem by deleting the user's dovecot.index, dovecot.index.cache and dovecot.index.log files in the user's INDEX directory for their dovecot Inbox. I tried having users experiencing this problem log in to a test Squirrelmail box with mail_debug on, but I didn't see anything out of the ordinary and they report the same slowness on the test server. I don't see anything but normal login/logout IMAP lines in the production dovecot logs. I have hesitated a bit in posting to the list since this seems to be happening to a small percentage of users and it technically may be a problem with Squirrelmail, but the fact that I'm able to fix the problem by nuking Dovecot's index files has me concerned - does anyone have any suggestions for troubleshooting? My first idea when I get another one of these is to do a telnet IMAP session to Dovecot on one of the Squirrelmail boxes and see if I can get it to slow down when retrieving messages from the Inbox. We are using Maildir over NFS with the control/index files stored on NFS as well. We're doing FS quota over NFS using rquotad to query the NFS server for each user's quota. Hi all, I've troubles with dovecot and quota. Sometimes mails to users are bounced because quota is full. I'm reading quota_rules from LDAP. One "du -h ." from maildir show user is under quota ( at 70 % more or less), less than 99%, i delete maildirsize and dovecot recreate it with ldap-quota value at first line and second line is current-quota mails. Current-quota is near quota max value so dovecot execute quota_warning (99%). Why is dovecot thinking quota is at 99% when du -h show me its value is near 70% ? any guess? i'm trying to backup the dovecot Maildir files over a cifs share. source is a debian build, share is a readynas. i've been getting rsync: mkstemp 'filename goes here' failed: Not a directory (20) errors. rsync is v3.0. i believe this is related to the dovecot file naming convention that includes characters such as ':' in the filename. anyone else seeing similar behavior? a workaround? i can go to different backup strategies, but rsync is cheap and effective for my needs. thanks, -SM-

I'm somewhat confused regarding Home Directories needed by sieve and setting them for an LDAP userdb. We have system users, passdb ldap, userdb ldap, but home directories are not mounted on the mail server. Now apparently, sieve needs the home directory for .dovecot.lda-dupes. Is there an easier way to give lda/sieve a home directory than setting something along the lines of user_attrs = ...,uid=home=/import/mail/%$/home in dovecot-ldap.conf?

[Dovecot] failing to deliver to one of multiple destinations

Is it defined whether, in case a message should be delivered to multiple destinations via a sieve script, and one of those destinations fail, then the whole delivery is to be considered as successful or not? My case: A sieve script forwarding to and external destinations plus local keep. The keep fails (configuration error, wrong homedir, .dovecot.lda- dupes not writable). According to postfix logs, dovecot deliver returned success. The mail was NOT delivered to the local destination and NOT bounced. Is this expected behaviour?

Using Postfix with Virtual Users/Virtual Domains, I have configured it with a wild card entry; i.e., "*.mydomain.com" This works fine in Postfix; however, using Dovecot for delivery is causing the message to bounce since Dovecot does not have an entry in the "user passwd" or "userdb" file. Hi, I know I've brought this up before (see http://www.mail-archive.com/dovecot@dovecot.org/msg20974.html) and I've since upgraded to 1.2.6, but our vacation messages are still being rejected because of Bad_MIME. Thanks Andreas, Ill look int postfix. Ive always used sendmail and was able to migrate my mailman mailing lists and aliases files over from my old mailserver several years ago when it lost its drives (thank god for backups). Luckily at that time I had a server that I was building for another totally different reason, and I just moved my configs over. Ive actually never had any issues with sendmail, but I will agree that documentation is low. Thanks for the help. Hi, when switching from Dovecot 1.1 + cmusieve to Dovecot 1.2 + sieve I stumbled upon the following problem: My sieve files, generated with Dovecot 1.1's managesieve, did not compile anymore with sieve's sievec. The error message was: error: end of file before end of hash comment. Looking a bit closer I found that the last line, which was a comment, did not have a trailing newline. Adding a newline fixed the problem. I do not know if Dovecot 1.2's managesieve behaves differently, but the upgrade from cmusieve to sieve In the spirit of "be generous in what you accept but strict in what you send", is it possible for sievec to not throw an error in this case, but simply compile the file. i've deployed a Solr server, and setup Dovecot for *both* squat & solr FTS. iiuc, reading at, http://wiki.dovecot.org/Plugins/FTS http://wiki.dovecot.org/Plugins/FTS/Solr as of dovecot v1.1.2, squat's required for IMAP compliance; solr search breaks it. is that still the case in v1.2? Is IMAP-compliant Solr search possible? planned? if the goal is fast, indexed FTS of dovecot IMAP stores from within a MUA, is fts_solr even helpful? or is it targeted for web interfaces to search ... ? thanks.

I mean every single email sent and recieved is kept for a period of time (3 -5 years) separate from users mail, and emails cant be deleted. Ideally emails would have compression, mailboxes need to be searchable easily, and some mechanism whereby attachments sent to multiple people only get saved once, and emails sent to multiple people only get saved once. I could do something with procmail that copies every email coming in to another directory easily, but that doesnt solve the sent email. Ive looked at several commercial products, but none seem to work nicely with sendmail. Thanks for the information, I'll look and see if sieve will work better for me than procmail. to document from #irc, in 1.2.x, specifying ./configure ... --sysconfdir=/path/to/dir ... correctly results in dovecot.conf looked for as "/path/to/dir/dovecot.conf". in 2.0, dovecot incorrectly creates a dovecot dir in the sysconfdir, and looks for, /path/to/dir/dovecot/dovecot.conf 2.0's behavior should be made consistent with the correct implementation in 1.2.x, or clarified as different in --help/docs. thanks.

I've installed dovecot 1:1.1.11-0ubuntu4.1 on my jaunty system. Access from the same host works well, but when I access remotely (from various MUAs and networks) I get *very* frequent disconnects. Authentication is fine, and I can usually open a mail folder, but larger operations such as copying 20 messages into an imap folder always get disconnected. I can reconnect, but I often get disconnected again in a few seconds, especially if I do more than very light access. I've enabled all the logging I'm aware of, but I don't see any explanations. [Dovecot] Using sieve with virtual delivery & maildir

I am using Postfix virtual users/domains with Dovecot virtual delivery to maildir style mailboxes. Now I want to get sieve working to sort out a few minor delivery problems. I want all mail with a message header "Delivered-To: foo+bar(a)domain.com placed in the /var/mail/vhost/example.com/foo/new directory. Would this work: require "fileinto"; if anyof (header :contains "Delivered-To" "foo+bar(a)domain.com") { fileinto "foo(a)example.com"; stop; } Running 'sieve-test' works OK; however, I do not want to implement it and suddenly start losing mail. -- Jerry gesbbb(a)yahoo.com Outside of a dog, a book is a man's best friend: and inside a dog, it's too dark to read. [Dovecot] how to config dovecot for multiple domains, multiple SSL certs, and conditional IP access -- with passwd-file passdb?

at them moment, i've configured dovecot for a flat passwd-file, annd static userdb. from dovecot.conf, ... auth default { mechanisms = plain digest-md5 cram-md5 user = mail ... passdb passwd-file { args = /data/mail/users/imap_user_file } userdb static { args = static uid=mail gid=mail home=/data/mail/store/Domains/%d/Accounts/%n quota=maildir:storage=4096 nice=10 } ... i'd like to configure dovecot to, host multiple domains, each on a separate IP setup a separate SSL cert for each domain respond with a different login_greeting for each domain restrict access to, and access type (e.g., TLS req'd vs noTLS, secure auth OK) of, imap login based with conditional rules based on the guest's IP address. all of these things are currently implemented on the non-dovecot imap server i'm migrating _from_, and i'd like to preserve these capabilities. can any/all of these be accomplished with a passwd-file flatfile lookup? i know i can restrict IP access in passwd-file with 'allow_nets=', but atm i'm unclear how i'd do that for multiple domains, etc. i understand that much can be accomplished with custom SQL queries, but for a small install would _prefer_ to stay flat file. i'm finding bits & pieces of capability in docs, etc -- but, so far, nothing comprehensive/all-inclusive. which makes me wonder a bit -- why not? any comments/advice would be much appreciated. thanks!

[Dovecot] Move messages marked as Spam

Hello I have implemented recently in my work bogofilter to mark messages as Spam or Ham, currently is working perfectly, but I want to move those messages marked as spam to a folder called spam. I installed dovecot-sieve with the intention of using fileinto to accomplish this. my question is: where I put this: require "fileinto"; if header :contains "X-Bogosity" "Spam" { fileinto "Spam"; } so that all messages that come to my users go into the spam folder? and how i handle messages that are marked as "Unsure" X-Bogosity: Unsure Thanks Michel ---------------------------------------------- Webmail, servicio de correo electronico Casa de las Americas - La Habana, Cuba.

[Dovecot] Logging in with '+' delimiter

Dovecot v1.2.4 FreeBSD-7.2 I have Postfix configured to use Virtual Users & Domains and use Dovecot for virtual delivery. Postfix also sends, dovecot correctly places mail with '+'addressing; i.e., "foo+bar(a)domain.com" into "path-to-mail/domain.com/foo+bar". The problem is when I attempt to access the mailbox, the user name: foo+bar(a)domain.com is rejected.
