[Dovecot] Smartsieve patch on Dovecot wiki?

I am attempting to get smartsieve 1.0 RC2 working with our test install of dovecot, but can not locate the Managesieve.php fix listed on the ManageSieve page: http://wiki.dovecot.org/ManageSieve/Clients Does anyone know of another location to get this fix? I've googled around, but not found an alternate location. We're running: dovecot-1.2.3 dovecot-1.2-sieve-0.1.12 dovecot-1.2-managesieve-0.11.9 The managesieve server is working fine for other ManageSieve clients such as Roundcube's managesieve and sieverules plugins, it is only smartsieve I am having problems with. I upgraded a number of servers to Dovecot 1.2.4, and now suddenly I get a lot of customers saying it takes a long time for them to log in. Hi, dovecot's imap process segfaults when I search a virtual mailbox using the fts_squat plugin. Is this supposed to work, or a known bug? [Dovecot] Global ACL configuration problems: mailboxes not visible, set ACLs not honoured

Hi list, I am having trouble getting global ACLs to work correctly. This is, I assume, an issue separate from the one I reported a few days ago [1], where the imap process crashes when creating subfolders of folders with an ACL set. As you can see from my 'dovecot -n' output below I have three namespaces; two private ("Backup" and the default, empty one) and one public ("Public"). I also use the autocreate plugin to create a few standard folders. Those folders, along with some others, should have some special permissions and restrictions in place. I.e. messages must not be deletable, the mailbox itself may not be deleted, etc. I want to use global ACLs so that I don't have to put a dovecot-acl file in every folder that I want to have an ACL set. Thus, according to the wiki, if have set acl:vfile:/etc/dovecot/acls I can create files named "Sent", "Trash", "Drafts", "INBOX.Spam" and "Backup.sent", "Backup.received", "Public.Spam", "Public.Ham" in the directory /etc/dovecot/acls. These files contain the ACL, such as "owner lrp", "owner lrwsipk" and "authenticated lrwstipk". Any and all "dovecot-acl-list" files have been deleted before testing and reproducing that problem again just now. Is there anything more to it? I ask, because I can't seem to get it to work correctly using this approach with global ACLs. Problems include: - Can't get the mailboxes "Spam" and "Ham" under the "Public" namespace to show up in the mail client (Thunderbird, KMail, Horde/IMP) at all. These have the ACL "authenticated lrwstipk" set so the should be visible to authenticated clients, shouldn't they? All I see is the namespace with no mailboxes beneath it. - Deleting messages from the "Backup.sent" or "Backup.received" mailboxes is possible from Thunderbird, KMail and Horde/IMP, despite having the ACL "owner rlp" set, which, if I understand correctly, should only allow users to lookup, read and post to the mailing list via LDA/Sieve. What am I doing wrong? It seems to me that the global ACL files for namespaces other than the empty one are not at all considered? Do I have to use another notation for the ACL file names? [Dovecot] v2.0 configuration paths

In Dovecot v2.0 I'm splitting dovecot-example.conf to multiple files. It's probably annoying to have tons of dovecot-*-example.conf files, so what do you think about: 1. Change default sysconfdir from $prefix/etc to $prefix/etc/dovecot (that's what most distros do anyway) 2. Install *.conf files to $sysconfdir/example/ without the "-example" part in any of the config files. So new installations would then start with "mv example/* ."

[Dovecot] Active IMAP sessions per server?

Hi, I'm curious about some of the larger dovecot installs out there and what your current active user load looks like per server. Realistically, how many active IMAP sessions are some of you maintaining? At what point did you find the load became unmanageable? I know there's a lot of different factors involved in this, but I'm just looking to get a rough idea of what I can expect to be able to handle with dovecot. Any help is appreciated Regards, Brent

I have set up postifx and dovecot (1.1) with virtual users and delivery via LDA. I am very pleased with the results so far but have this problem with quotas. Setting a global quota using plugin { } I initially used maildir to set quotas, but they seem to apply to all folders apart from INBOX. For debugging I switched maildir to dict using mysql. The table populates as it should with sizes and message count for all messages created in trash/drafts/sent folders - but messages in the INBOX do not increment size or message count in the table. I have tried with quota rules for both messages and storage. I have also tried specifying INBOX instead of * Any suggestions on how to fix please? Hello list, My dovecot setup have expire plugin enabled. [Dovecot] Quick and dirty server optimized for IMAP upload speed?

Early next week I need to upload over 100,000 emails to an IMAP server as quickly as possible from an Outlook client. I am looking for any methods I can use to (temporarily?) speed up the rate at which dovecot can accept and store IMAP uploads, whether it be storing on local disk, ram disk, etc. I can setup a temporary server on a laptop for example and once the upload has finished I can use standard file copying methods to transfer the mail to stable, permanent storage. I haven't been able to see over about 7 msgs/sec upload speed from a local folder in any mail client to dovecot (only NFS or ZFS backend tested so far with Maildir). Is there something horribly wrong with the speed I am seeing or are there just tricks I can try? Any tips? I'll be working on it all weekend until I find something satisfactory. It seems like I can upload mails to an Exchange server quicker. I'll setup just about anything that my experience allows me to, I can be very resourceful with adhoc hardware and software. Alternatively I'll take a fast way of converting Exchange email to a tree of local mbox files which I can then run mb2md on. I tried using Thunderbird to Import the mails from Outlook and while it was fast, it messed up the formatting of some of the mails so I don't think I can use that. I tried readpst briefly from libpst but it took a long time to run, took alot of cpu, and was spewing lots of errors so I canceled it. Thanks for any input!

[Dovecot] Postfix : lda problem

Hi, I come back with my problem: On debian lenny, using dovecot 1.1.13-2~bpo50+1 I try to configure my setup (with Postfix virtual domains) to use dovecot as lda but nothing happens, as if postfix not delegate to dovecot I am using the contreol panel alternc (http://www.alternc.org) All the maildir are in the format /var/alternc/mail/i/info_domainepublic.net for info(a)domainepublic.net The "virtual_mailbox_maps" will retrieve the correct maildir to deliver the message. For Alternc, an address is considered as an alias of the primary domain name. Thus info(a)domainepublic.net is assimilated to info_domainepublic.net(a)altern.domainepublic.net Here is a sequence of arrival of mail, the result of postconf -n, dovecot -n and the master.cf from postfix I looked in the documentation and google, but I do not understand the problem. [Dovecot] Dovecot 1.0.14 + osx 10.6 and authentication PAM

Howdy, Today I installed the new version of Apple OSX 10.6. Besides that it deleted the dovecot user, things went quite smooth. As far as I can tell it is running as it used to. However, I can't login to my account. It used to work fine with PAM taking the username and password from my osx installation. Now it doesn't allow me to login anymore. I have read on a website that apple changed from Linux-Pam to Open-Pam. If this is true, how would I need to change the PAM entry file? [Dovecot] Quota question.

Hi, I am trying to get quota working properly on dovecot 1.2.3 with postfix admin, amavisd-new, mysql, and postfix. So far I can see the db getting updated when messages are added and deleted from the mailbox. The problem I am having is that I have imported a bunch of messages from the old mail server that was running uw-imap and mbox to the doevcot machine using maildir++. As a result the quotas used only reflects what has been added and deleted since the import was done. What is the proper way to get the quota in the database to reflect what is actually in the users mailbox? Google and the wiki have not been helpful to me in figuring this out. This morning I upgraded a dovecot installation from 1.1.16 to 1.2.4 on a FreeBSD 7.2 server, and then spent 3 hours trying to figure out why GSSAPI authentication had broken. Since enabling ACLs in dovecot.conf, none of the users see the 'shared2' namespace. I've clearly misunderstood something. I'm expecting user xyz to be able to see the public folder. Hi, I have installed dovecot 1.0 mail server on debian linux. I am using unix authentication to login the mail accounts. We developed one web mail application whcih use imap protocol and send mail fro sending the mail. We are creating unix user through our application and able to login to the mail account succesfully and do all opeartion on that. But once user change password through our application or directly on unix commaqnd prompt then we are unable to login to mail application it gives authentication failed error. Even user can use ssh, sftp after changing password. Everything works except mail account. Here is the error excerpt from log files (mail.log and auth.log ) respectively. Okay, I'm cruising the wiki, and it is at best confusing to me. Maybe someone on the list can help me out quickly? Here is what I have: dovecot 1.1.18, mbox format, currently no acl/namespace/etc. All works great. What I want to be able to do: Have an email account (or folder or mailbox) which can be accessed by several people (say 3) with per-user seen flags. That is, say 3 people all access the mail but each user has their own seen flag for the messages. This would hopefully be done with mbox still, if possible, but I'm willing to try a mixed mbox/maildir setup if required to accomplish the goal. Questions: 1) Can I do this with 1.1.18, or do I need to upgrade? 2) Do I need to set :CONTROL in mail_location, and if so, what should I set it to, and what does this control exactly (more precisely, does this info need to be HA or not, etc) Is this where the seen flag info will be stored (or is that in INDEXES)? 3) Can I do this with mbox only, or do I need maildir, or does it depend on dovecot version? 4) Any additional help you can give me... I basically understand the ideas behind it all, but from the wiki I'm confused exactly what I need to do, and what version I might need. (If the wiki example is for dovecot 1.2+, does that mean it won't work in 1.1, or just that it has to be done differently, etc). Any help (clearing up my obvious confusion) would be appreciated... I am running dovecot (1.2.3) with postfix (2.6.3), postfixadmin (2.1.0), maia mailguard (1.0.2) and squirrelmail (1.4.19) on Linux (kernel 2.6.27.8). I have an ongoing problem with imap processes that hang and eat all available cpu. I try killing them and they won't die. The only way to get rid of them is to reboot the server. Any help with this will be greatly appreciated. I really need to get this solved as it has been an ongoing problem for more than a year.

[Dovecot] TLS / SSL mixed w/ plaintext auth and virtual hosting

Traditionally this server has only accepted plaintext authentications; however, we want to change that and enable TLS/SSL. The challenge is the server has hundreds of IP addresses it binds to to listen on ports 110/143. Enabling TLS/SSL is not an option because as this is a virtual hosting environment, if a connection comes in on any other hostname other than the specific one tied to the crt all mail clients will throw a mis-matched certificate error if TLS is initiated by the client, and a surprisingly large number of customers have "use TLS if available" selected in their clients. According to most of the suggestions on the list, I've setup 2 dovecot instances. The first listening on *:110 and *:143, and the second listening on 10.0.0.2:993 and 10.0.0.2:995. This works great for SSL support; however, I would also like to offer TLS to connections coming in on a single IP address. Because the server has hundreds of IPs, with new IPs adding all the time, seemingly the only way would be to configure every one of these IPs (as they occur) into the primary dovecot.conf file, and then only setup the single IP that's handling SSL/TLS in the dovecot-ssl.conf (the conf file the SSL/TLS instance loads). This can be time consuming and has no way to automate. It would be terrific if one of the following exists, or potentially could exist: 1. Ideal scenario. A config option which tells TLS to only respond on certain IPs. In our case if a connection attempts to initiate TLS on any IP address except 10.0.0.2, it would respond with no TLS support. This would be ideal as we could continue running just a single dovecot instance. 2. Secondary scenario. A way to exclude an IP from being bound to. Something like the following to bind to all except 10.0.0.2 listen = *:110, -10.0.0.2 As is, based on my understanding of the config neither of these are options. Any support for adding either of these options, or alternate ideas anyone might have? - N

Since this script is only called at startup, would it be safe to just delete master.pid before trying to start dovecot? The server here is OS X 10.5.7, dovecot is being called via a StartupItem. I had originally used a LaunchDaemon for starting this, but ran into issues because MySQL wasn't always ready when dovecot tried to launch, and dovecot would never come up as a result. Hi, I'm running a postfix/dovecot/ldap setup and it works quite fine. I am now trying to setup a global sieve script to forward all incoming mails to a local user for vacation management (gnarwl). I can't user the vacation extension of the sieve script itself because it is not configurable enough (each user has his vacation message and status stored in LDAP). The problem is that when deliver runs the sieve script, it tries to create the .dovecot.lda-dupes inside the user homedir, even if I didn't use the vacation feature in the script. [Dovecot] Weird mirgration problem

Most likely non-Dovecot, but I'd appreciate any comments on WTF might be going on here. Preparatory to migration from mbox to maildir format on our AIX mail server, I am migrating from the JFS filesystem (being deprecated by IBM) to JFS2 to better handling the jump in the number of files. Two nights ago, I took the first step and migrated the IT homedir filesystem: copied it to a scratch disk, melted down the FS and recreated it as a JFS2 FS. In order to keep changes from happening to it during this process, I killed off DC (dovecot -n ouput is appended to bottom of this note) and dropped the export of the FS. The bringup was a little ragged due to time constraints and the fact that I had trouble re-establishing the export. FWIW, the homedirs and Inobx FSes are mounted by a majordomo mailing list server. Everything went fine except for an anomaly with old pre-existing mailing list emails in my INBOX and that of a few others. Note that the inbox FS wasn't touched by this process, just the homedir FS for the IT department. Unfortunately, because of time pressures, I can say exactly what I was doing then. = I never took down my TBird session while doing this process...and I imagine that others, who haven't said anything and presumably didn't have this problem, left their TBird or IMAP email client up... Does this anomaly bring to mind anything to you? FWIW, I plan on doing the students' homedir FS early tomorrow morning. We are occasionally experiencing trouble where the NFS server's load will shoot over 60+. (Normal of sub 1.0). I have been hunting this for a while, and I believe it comes down to "deliver". System setup: NFS servers: x4540 Solaris 10 x64 ZFS over NFS. NFS clients: Solaris 10 x64 postfix-2.4.1 with dovecot-1.1.11 deliver. Hi, I´m reading the past topics related to archive and scalability of dovecot, they are all very interesting. Here, I´m using two dovecot proxies in front of five storages pairs, and we split the domain´s accounts among those servers. So, we can share the i/o load and if one server goes down only few accounts of the domain stops (not all of them). But, we began to have space problems - and the solution would be insert more and more storage servers. So I was searching for some archive solutions (hard links - at S.O level, or some dovecot extension). A friend told me that he knows an ISP that share even the mailbox of the users among many servers - this is very weird and (at same time) very interesting approach. Instead of put all messages into one maildir and this maildir into one server, this "maildir" (?) is spplited among many servers - so, if one servers fails the account is still acessible and they move old/big messages to a new "cheap" storage - archiving transparently. Well, maybe it´s an stupid idea, but couldn´t dovecot imap/pop proxy do the same ? I mean, imagine the following scenario: 1- Proxy does an user account sql - today the return is (among other data), the final server IP, but it could be the storage servers for this account 2- Proxy does parallel connections (instead of today´s one connection with the final server). Retrieve the messages and caches locally where the message is. If the cache is lost, no problem, it just connects again and re-cache them. 3- When a message is deleted/flagged, etc - it has the cache (allowing it to know where send the command to), when a message inserted (as sent folder) - the system can have the 'default storage' where the messages are delivered and saved to - the other storages are just for archiving (or even a round-robin delivery !? - hard to control). Problems: 1- Have the cache at proxy level. 2- Quota calculation (how the delivery process can check this ?) 3- Maybe mixing proxy connection and this new approach is not easy way. 4- the more servers, the more time waiting their answers (imagine one of them answering slowly). Advantages: 1- No local mounts at storage level - (as nfs and other network mounted partitions). 2- Servers independency - if space is at a critical value, insert a pair of servers, move messages there, insert the servers in the sql answer (server1, server2, server3, ... , serverN). 3- Scalability - the more servers, the more i/o load you can share. But when I try to telnet into pop3 and use list command, nothing is logged and dovecot.rawlog remain empty. should I run rawlog even on login_executable ? A simple 'killall dovecot-auth' takes care of it and the server is able to start. I'm not using anything exotic, dovecot config below. The most curious fact is that we have identical servers running the same version of dovecot (1.2.3, happened under 1.2.1 as well) talking to the same MySQL database and both develop the problem at the same time. The database is under considerable stress at the time this occurs as the policyd tables are being cleaned. But this happens twice per hour and only sometimes does dovecot have trouble. I'm working to move the policyd database elsewhere, but of course this shouldn't happen in any case. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks! [Dovecot] Per user namespace

I'm in the process of upgrading an old server which is running uw-imap to a new one running Dovecot. With the old machine, unfortunately, my users had the opportunity to store their e-mails in various locations. For example, some have their mail boxes stored in ~/mail/[various mbox files], others ALSO have a ~/mail/clients/[various mbox files] and yet others simply stored them in their ~/ path (thanks to the old IMAP). Is there a way to create per-user namespaces? I don't want to create a "mail/", "mail/clients/", etc., etc. global name space that will end up showing up on everyone's mail client, nor do I want to individually change each user's setup (and rewrite their .subscriptions file). Hello i use dovecot for our mail server, it's installed on about 8 servers and it's doing really good, thanks for the great effort :-) however, i have been facing a quota problem recently, dovecot says that some users are using for example (700MB) while they are actually using (10MB), i solve this by removing *maildirsize *which solves it, is there any fix for this bug ? thanks and regards Amr Shahin

Hi Timo, thank you for your reply. I take the configuration from http://www.linuxmail.info/postfix-dovecot-ldap-centos-5/ especially the dovecot-configuration for passdb and userdb. As you mentioned in your reply I added the userdb ldap with a symbolic link on the original dovecot-ldap.conf: userdb: driver: ldap args: /etc/dovecot-ldap-userdb.conf but with no success. Any hints? I have another question: Does Dovecot expect a special "field type" for the ldap quota field (for ex. integer)? Good morning, Still not having luck to get the LDA to work, using Qmail + Vpopmail and read the wiki. I'm using: auth default { mechanisms = plain passdb vpopmail { } userdb vpopmail { } user = vpopmail count = 1 ssl_require_client_cert = no } Which work well for authenticating users, however when using the following in a .qmail file: |/var/qmail/bin/preline -f /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/deliver -d $EXT@$USER I get the following error message: Error:_userdb_lookup:_connect(/usr/local/var/run/dovecot//auth-master)_failed:_No_such_file_or_directory/ Eventhough it should have been created (I think) in the protocol lda section of the config file. I specifieD: auth_socket_path = /var/run/dovecot/auth-master However I thought since using vpopmail I don't need to use the auth-master ? or am I missing something? Hi List I use dovecot with LDA deliver, have quotas for my users use postfix as MTA server. as it could limit or refuse delivery of mail once the user has exceeded the limit of the quota? As in my configuration could define multiple LDAP servers? I have two servers with Active Directory, a PDC and a BDC, but I would specify both in the same configuration. for when the ldap server 1 has problems, authenticating against Ldap 2 . Thanks Michel

Hi, I am really stuck here. I am trying to setup imap for an external mail server. I have a freebsd server running sendmail / dovecot. I am transfering the existing mail from an exchange 2003 server to the mailserver using imapsync. This works fine, but gives errors when it tries to make a submap, also thunderbird gives an error "Mailbox doesn't allow inferior mailboxes" when I try to make a submap. I found out that it has something to do with the mbox not able to have submaps and there should be a workaround using namespaces. I tried several setups but keep getting errors. Hello, we're implementing a dovecot 1.2.1 with sieve 0.1.7 and managesieve 0.11.7. We're having problems with creating sieve scripts so that vacation works. Hello, all. I'm using Dovecot 1.0.15 on our internal mail server and I'm seeing a high load from one of our users. This user uses Thunderbird (with the IMAP protocol) and the load average of the server goes through the roof every once in a while. I'ld like to understand why we're seeing this and whether the blame should be put on Thunderbird or on Dovecot. Has anyone ever seen this before? Emmanuel

[Dovecot] SOT: Removing _extra_ linefeeds from MSOutlook(?) messages

I realize this is sorta off topic but my searches using Google have got me mostly no where. So I thought I'd ask here as there is a lot of _past Postfix_ mail handling issues discussed. The issue is; I have to deal with a lot of messages that come from MS Outlook users and sometimes they are replies to replies to replies ... My reading indicates it has a little to do with HTML composed messages and the format=flowed declaration. This produces messages with *lot* of extra line feeds. Makes the messages nearly unreadable -- in Thunderbird. I'm sure others have got two line (sentence) messages that took 6+ lines to display. Then when they are replies or forwards it is even more. Every line gets two NLs/CRLFs. Anyone have a suggestion of how to _strip_ multiple line feeds from a message? Is there a sieve method/way? I don't want to fiddle with all the users emails just my own. Pointers, ideas, clues? \\||/ Rod --

[Dovecot] critical X-UID reordering problem after upgrade from 1.1 to 1.2

We upgraded our imap server hardware and went from dovecot 1.1.3 to 1.2.3 in the process and have been having a critical problem since. I believe I've tracked it down to X-UID reordering that dovecot seemed to do to the mbox format (I know, I know...) inboxes. The problem has manifest itself in several ways with different mail clients but the general problem is that the mail clients have gotten confused about which message is which. For example, thunderbird will display the wrong information about a message in the header listing but then show the correct data in the message display window when you actually open the message. As you can imagine, this is causing all kinds of user problems. Here is a very simplified explanation of what I'm seeing. Imagine that the inbox had 5 messages with X-UID values 1, 3, 5, 6, and 9 before the upgrade. After the upgrade the X-UIDs were reordered so these same 5 messages now might have X-UID values of 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. Thunderbird then shows the summary information like this: Subject/Sender/Date for message 1 Subject/Sender/Date for message 2 Subject/Sender/Date for message 2 Subject/Sender/Date for message 4 Subject/Sender/Date for message 3 Now, if you actually open the 5th message it shows the right message body but the summary information is for the message that *used* to have X-UID 5 (which is now the 3rd message). So, the thunderbird cache is out of sync and I can fix it by removing the .msf file for that mailbox but, as you can imagine, the prospect of getting all the users to remove their .msf/.pst/?? cache files is daunting, to say the least. I've seen discussions about similar things happening with mbox format inboxes but they all seem to be in the context of some ancient 0.xx version of dovecot with known mbox processing bugs. But, I went from a reasonably current 1.1.3 version to 1.2.3. Right after seeing the problem, I upgraded to the just released 1.2.4 but either that didn't address the problem or, if it did, the reordering damage was already done by version 1.2.3. So, my 2 questions are: 1) Anyone know why this would have happened and whether it is a dovecot problem or something I botched? I folded all the local config changes I had made to the 1.1.3 conf file into the stock 1.2.3 conf file so they should have been identical modulo changes in the distro. And, our local config changes are really minimal. 2) Is there anything I can do now other than getting all the users to remove their .msf/.pst/etc files? It sure would be grand if there was something I could do on the server side that would magically cause all the client-side caches to be invalidated. I'm hesitant to strip the inboxes of all the X-IMAPbase and X-UID lines because I'm not sure what the ramifications of that might be. Here are some other random thoughts in case they might be related: - The old server was running 32bit RHEL4 and the new one 64bit RHEL5 - I'm using the pre-built dovecot rpms from atrpms.net - The dovecot index cache is kept in /var/cache/dovecot/indexes and I did not copy that over from the old server to the new assuming it would just be rebuilt. The ManageSieve release is important to match login proxy API changes in Dovecot; older versions will not compile against the new Dovecot release. The new Sieve release first includes the new date extension, which allows matching against date values in header fields and the current date-time at script execution. My configuration : - a smtp server with Postfix 2.6 and Dovcot 1.1.11. - a windows 2003 server with active directory for accounts and boxes I would like to use SMTP / SASL on my postfix 2.6 to authenticate my remote laptop users (allow legitimate users to relay mail). To do that, I need to use SASL Dovecot fonctionnality and ldap request. How to configure Dovecot to enable SMTP/SASL and verify login/password who are declared on a second server in Windows 2003 (Active Directory). Regards

others have found this problem ? this possible bug can be used by user in that way that one password login can use 2 maildirs in filesystem effitively give them all space qoutas and lost of other goodies so to speak: foo(a)example.com with a password can login with fOO(a)example.com and fOo(a)example.com add more chars to get more mailbox :/ confirms ? i found the problem when i had horde installed dovecot 1.1.7 -- xpoint

I'm trying to setup deliver as an LDA for system users. I've read http://wiki.dovecot.org/LDA/Sendmail which handles virtual users. I don't see a README for what I need. I want sendmail to accept the mail and then hand off to deliver with sieve plugin. Deliver should look in the users home directory which is found in /etc/passwd for the sieve-script to see what to do with it. If the sieve-script DNE, then just deliver to INBOX(from dovecot.conf). Any help would be appreciated. I was testing a new webmail client - like an idiot, against my own mailbox, instead of a test mailbox (or even a separate server) - and my Inbox got wiped. Fortunately I backup our mails nightly, so I only lost a couple from today. No idea how the wipe occured - I didn't INTENTIONALLY perform a delete + purge...but it happened. Is there a way of configuring Dovecot to ensure that any delete operation specified by a client results in a "move to Trash" as a precaution? Instead of relying on the client to perform it? -- Daniel

Hi, Is there a way in sieve to get the current date, preferably in YYYYMMDD format? To what I've found it's hard to achieve. I have tried including a :global sieve script in which I would set the current date to a certain variable and overwrite this included script every day. But to my disappointement variables set in an included script do not exist in the original script... In fact what I want to achieve is that some actions like forwarding or vacation messages are performed from a certain date untill another date. Which would allow a user to define a timeperiod in which the autoreply or forward should be done and automatically stop without updating the sieve script again. Comparing start and stopdate is cake, but just getting today's date seems to be a hassle, any ideas? regards, bart

I have understood correctly when thinking that all I need to do in order to restore mails, is to just copy the old maildir folder to the location where mail_location is pointing to and dovecot will find all the mails and display the old mails? Hi, Thank you to everyone who helped me get near the goal. Remains a problem is that aliases don't work. The problem is that in the configuration of alternc, the mails are seen as aliases in the form user_domain.tld. In a second time, a match is made to see if an "real" alias exists. postmap -q test(a)lists.test.net mysql:/etc/postfix/mydomain.cf test-owner_lists.collectifs.net postmap -q test-owner_lists.test.net mysql:/etc/postfix/myalias.cf "| /var/lib/mailman/mail/mailman owner test" With my configuration, this second part doesn't work. Perhaps the simplest is to ask to deliver the mail to user_domain.tld except of user(a)domain.tld in master.cf ? [Dovecot] Gotchas in switching from one server to another without impacting users?

We have to replace one mail store (foo.example.org) with another (bar.example.org) I rsync'd the maildirs from foo to bar today and the plan is to hold all delivery (in the SMTP server) on foo over the weekend, rsync again (this time it should be much faster since the large xfer already occurred today), then flush the SMTP queue on foo towards bar, direct all new deliveries to bar.example.org. Users currently access their IMAP mailboxes via imap.example.org. I plan to just 'flip the switch' at DNS so imap.example.org points to bar.example.org (instead of foo.example.org) so users don't have to change anything on their end and should not even notice this change. Is there anything else I should think about to mitigate users noticing a change? Does the fact that the mail filenames include 'foo.example.org' in the file name (while new deliveries to bar.example.org will include that new hostname) spell trouble later on or can I ignore it? Is there a more efficient way to achieve my goal? And finally, dovecot on foo.example.org is 1.1.7 while the new server is running 1.1.16. I don't think that should be an issue, but mentioning it just in case. Thanks! -- GC

[Dovecot] Public namespaces with global ACLs 1.2+

Hi, I'm having trouble to get ACLs working in a more restrictive way with namespaces. I would like to grant certain users the ability to create new mailboxes in a public namespace e.g. "Public/Newsletters" etc. It works when I add the users to a ".DEFAULT" ACL file like this: user=username lrwk Anyway I'd like to limit their permissions on the Namespace "Public", or even better - being more restrictive, on "Public/Newsletters". Neither global ACL files for "Public" nor "Newsletters" nested in the global path seem to work. For now only the .DEFAULT ACL (/var/vmail/ domain/etc/acls/.DEFAULT) seems to mitigate the problem which is undesirable. dovecot -n excerpt: plugin: acl: vfile:/var/vmail/%d/etc/acls:cache_secs=300 Thanks Thomas

Hi all, I have configured Dovecot as a POP/IMAP-Server in front of a Postfix-Server. Every thing works without one thing: LDAP-quotas The main-quota-rule works: quota_rule: *:storage=8M Only the LDAP-quota won't be used by Dovecot: user_attrs = msRADIUSFramedIPAddress=quota_rule=*:storage=%$k I have to use the special LDAP-field "msRADIUSFramedIPAddress" because my W2003 domain controller don't have a regular quota field. This LDAP-field is the only "free integer" LDAP-field. Could anyone please give me a hint? [Dovecot] BUG: mbox_snarf causes message duplication when two IMAP connections are open

Hello, I have used dovecot to replace an ageing wu-imap installation using the mbox_snarf plugin however I have noticed that when we have more than one client checking the INBOX we then have messages being duplicated in the INBOX. Below is the configuration used as requested in the bug report page. I have confirmed that the duplicates are being caused by dovecot by doing an strace of both processes that have both the INBOX (/mail_home/$username/INBOX) and mail spool file (/var/spool/dovecot/$username) open and delivering a new message through exim to the mail spool file in /var/spool/dovecot/$username. I then see in strace first one process check the spool and copy the message over and then the other processes do the same. If anyone requires any further information to confirm this bug please let me know. Kind regards. [Dovecot] More Migration Questions

Hello, I was on here a month or two ago asking lots of questions about migrating from uw-imapd/qpopper/mbox to dovecot/maildir. I am now at the stage where i'm trying to convert all my emails, but i have a few questions... Where should i convert my mbox mailboxes into? "/home/username/Maildir/" or "/somewhere/maildirs/"? Does it actually matter? Is there a standard location that they *should* go? I've tried converting them into "/somewhere/maildirs/username/", but then i found a dovecot page that says they are usually stored in "/home/username/Maildir" so now i don't know where to put them! Also, having converted the mbox files into maildir files, i do seem to have one email per file, as intended, but the files have names like "1250253965.000586.mbox,S=8167,W=8427:2,S". Should they have the word "mbox" in their filename if they are maildir files? Finally, it appears that our existing IMAP users (all mbox) have mailboxes stored simply in their home directory, not necessarily inside the "~/mail/" directory - is this going to be a problem? The command i'm using to convert is this one: ./migrateuser.sh username /home/username /vol2/maildirs/username This script (and the latest mb2md.py that goes with it, to preserve msg IDs) were obtained from here: http://wiki.dovecot.org/Migration/MailFormat The stage i'm at with the server overall is that uw-imapd and qpopper have been completely removed, exim is currently setup to deliver via it's own method into the mbox files in /var/spool/mail but the exim service is stopped because i'm migrating, and dovecot 1.1 is installed but stopped, and has had no configuration done to it yet whatsoever. Hi all I have dovecot 1.1.16 (dovecot-1.1.16-0_94.el5 x86-64) installed on a Red Hat Enterprise v.5. I am already using Dovecot's deliver for virtual users local delivery and need to install the cmusieve plugin for the filtering capabilities. Hi, I have a couple of people bumping into an issue with their imap process crashing - from the users perspective, their mail client (thunderbird) just stops recieving new mail. It still seems to be possible for them to read their mail using squirell mail. I tried enabling core dumps using 'ulimit -c unlimited' and messing around with some environment variables to stop the startup scripts from forcing core dumps off again (DAEMON_COREFILE_LIMIT=18446744073709551615 /etc/init.d/dovecot restart). After doing that, I do not see anything in the logs any more - but I still seem to be having problems moving the emails around in my account. It would seem that it is still broken but Im just not getting any logs telling me so. There don't seem to be any core dumps sitting around anywhere either. [Dovecot] How to disable system users from receiving mail?

I know that login can be disable for system users and groups, but how do I refuse email for system groups? It's a bit of a security/maintenance irritation - I don't want to check for such spam mail, since that is possible. Thanks for any help!! Answer preferably given, so that I can configure it through webmin please.

[Dovecot] can't deliver with Kerberos username

I've been trying to use Kerberos and PLAIN text file for authentication. I've setup deliver in postfix master.cf and make sure correct username are expanded but deliver is always told me "user unknown". I can logon into mailbox using Kerberos w/o problems and can send emails. [Dovecot] Listing shared mailboxes with a domainpart

Hy! I am currently configuring a new mailserver using postfix and dovecot 1.2.1. The filesystem strucutre in my spool directory is user1/ user2/ domain/info/ domain/office/ user1 and unser2 are ordinary users mailboxes, the latter two contain the virtual mailboxes for info@domain and office@domain as created by postfix. I want these virtual mailboxes (all of them are in maildir format) to be shared to certain real users. I configured a shared namespace: namespace shared { separator = / prefix = shared/%%d/%%n/ location = maildir:/var/spool/vmaildir/%%d/%%n/ #I tried ths as well # prefix = shared/%%u/ # location = maildir:/var/spool/vmaildir/%%u/ hidden = no subscriptions = no list = yes inbox = no } Then I configured a dictionary to list the folders, as described in the wiki: plugin { acl_shared_dict = proxy::acl } dict { acl = mysql:/etc/dovecot/dovecot-dict-sql.conf } where /etc/dovecot/dovecot-dict-sql.conf holds map { pattern = shared/shared-boxes/user/$to/$from table = virtual_user_shares value_field = dummy fields { from_user = $from to_user = $to } } The database table consists of +-------------+------------+-------+ | from_user | to_user | dummy | +-------------+------------+-------+ | info@domain | user1 | 1 | +-------------+------------+-------+ But when I login as user1 I can neither see nor subscribe to the info@domain mailbox. [Dovecot] Released Sieve v0.1.10 for Dovecot v1.2.2

Hello Dovecot users, In the last week two nasty bugs were found in the new Sieve implementation. Primarily, the include extension did not work when a compiled binary was loaded from disk. This is something that is still not tested by the test suite, giving this bug the opportunity to slip through. Also, the value matching implementation would sometimes cause a assertion failure. Other than that, various small bugs were fixed. On the more positive side, I have implemented support for the new mailbox extension (RFC 5490), which provides the means to test whether a mailbox exists. Also, it adds the :create argument to the fileinto command, which makes sure that the target folder is created before saving is attempted. Of course, this is only useful when deliver is used with the -n option. There wasn't a great need for this extension, but I could use it in the test suite and it was almost trivial to implement. In other news, I have further developed the sieve-filter command line tool. It is getting closer to a usable state, being able to filter a large number of messages in an existing mailbox, but its use is currently still very much discouraged as it tends to be very good at eating mailboxes when the user is less attentive. It needs more command line configuration options, a simulation mode to perform a dry run, and a man page that describes its use and its dangers. Changelog for Sieve v0.1.10: * Changed action execution of fileinto and keep. These changes depend on API additions in Dovecot, making this release depend on Dovecot v1.2.2 or newer. * Further developed the sieve-filter command line tool. This required a few changes to the action execution of the Sieve engine. The tool was successfully tested on folders with a few 100k spam messages. However, the commandline options are still incomplete, a man page is missing and it needs much more testing before I can recommend anyone to use this tool. + Added support for the mailbox extension. This allows checking whether a mailbox exists using the mailboxexists command and it adds the :create argument to the fileinto command to create the mailbox when it is missing. The :create feature is useless unless the Deliver LDA is run with the -n option. + Improved the testsuite with tests for message delivery. Messages stored using keep and fileinto can be fed back into the Sieve engine for verification. This includes testing of applied IMAP flags. + Updated the man pages with the new method of specifying the supported extensions using + and - (for the -x parameter of the sieve tools) + Further developed the deprecated notify extension. A dummy for the denotify command exists, meaning that its use does not cause an error anymore. - Fixed a bug in the derivation of the binary path from the script path. A bare filename would yield a path relative to root. - Fixed a bug in the value matching code. The context data now uses a proper pool in stead of the data stack. Bug reported by Jan Sechser. - Fixed assertion fail in the include extension caused by missing initialization upon binary load. This bug surfaces only for stored binaries. Bug reported by Tom Hendrikx. - Fixed include error message for failed :global include. It mentioned the wrong config parameter. - Fixed broken wiki reference in an error message of the plugin about the 'sieve' setting. - Fixed behavior of fileinto when delivering into a namespace prefix. Previous fix used the wrong storage. Yes, the configuration seems odd or interesting as you said. The idea behind this is: - Before scripts will be use for filtering spam, when they have SPAM header. Not problem at it. - User scripts will be used for vacation messages. These are created with Squirrelmail and avelsize plugin (user interaction) - After scripts will be used for doing redirections, such as forwarding mail to a blackberry account(not problem at it) or forwarding to another user account (in the same domain, the problem is here). The reason not to put the redirections or forwarding in users scripts is to avoid users deleting redirections and have in one file all the redirections. I also try to use redirections from avelsieve plugin (0.9.9.9) and it works the forwarding but it didn't work the keep command, the mail is forwarded but the user doesn't have a copy of it. I will investigate your advice for envelope or try to use user's scripts. I didn't know about original headers, if this in RFC sieve documents? Thanks Timo and thanks Stephan for the tips. Hi, the listescape plugin seems to take its job a little bit too serious. Greetings, i am testing: - dovecot-1.2-sieve-0.1.11 - dovecot 1.2.3 - dovecot-1.2-managesieve-0.11.8 (with patch) I am trying to use sieve_after to execute some redirection of mails. I have put in the after script: require "include"; require "fileinto"; if header :contains ["To","Cc"] "userA(a)acasalud.com.ar" { keep; redirect "userB(a)acasalud.com.ar"; } The redirection works but the sender user (userA) get the following error: This is the mail system at host acamail.acasalud.com.ar. Hello, I would like to have Polish imap folders' names in dovecot instead of English. How I can do this with dovecot? Change table of folders: INBOX -> Otrzymane Sent -> Wyslane Drafts -> Robocze Trash -> Kosz Then I would like to display them using SquirrelMail. [Dovecot] Very long establishment time for secondary connections

Hello, I'm currently on Dovecot 1.1.17 and I have a user that runs into a problem quite a lot. She's using Thunderbird on a Mac. When she sends mail, Thunderbird is set up to save sent mail to her Sent folder. Often (usually when she has not sent another mail for a long while) when she sends mail, Thunderbird sits there saying "Copying message to Sent folder" for about thirty seconds. My best guess, after looking at dovecot messages in syslog related to her login, is that Thunderbird is using a secondary imap process to do this copying and this connection times out due to inactivity, so that when she sends mail it has to reestablish itself. For some reason this reestablishment seems to take a very long time, even though her initial login/connection when she opens Thunderbird is very fast. I looked for a way to increase the inactivity time in dovecot.conf but didn't see one. I don't know of any other user that has this problem, which makes me suspicious of her client rather than Dovecot. Pretty much everyone is using Thunderbird, although she's the only one using it on a Mac. Is it possible/likely that it takes so long because for some reason Thunderbird on a Mac doesn't notice that the second connection has died and is taking a long time trying to use the first invalid connection before reestablishment? Or is it likely that this is a Dovecot problem and I simply haven't figured out what's going on, yet? All help very much appreciated. Thanks, Jeff

Good afternoon, I am considering to upgrade from Dovecot 1.1.18 to 1.2.x and was reading your Wiki regarding any changes and found: "If you were using e.g. mail_location = maildir:/var/mail/%h, just change it to mail_location = maildir:%h and add /var/mail/ prefix to home dirs." I am currently using: "mail_location = maildir:~/Maildir" in combination with vpopmail. Does this need to be changed? or is ~/Maildir considered an absolute directory? Hello I have installed Dovecot as a POP3 server, IMAP on my internal network, the authentication against Windows Active Directory. I would like to know how to setup a second server dovecot as my proxy server for external users outside the network, in another segment of different IP addresses, or at least define which mailboxes will be stored on another server to be accessible to both servers. I have reviewed the document on the wiki site, but I said that is only possible with mysql authentication, but as I said the road where the messages are stored, it is possible for NFS? Thanks Michel

I need to copy some email storage from a Dovecot Server running 1.0.15 into another Dovecot Server running 1.2.2. I know that I can use imapsync (perhaps this is the proper way) But I was just wondering, if I can just run Rsync to do that transfer: Will I run against some incompatibility formats between these two versions? [Dovecot] QUOTA not appearing in CAPA

Hi, ok, I've compiled it a few times, and made sure all of my settings are correct, but the QUOTA is not appearing in the opening CAPA that comes with the greeting. Could you offer some suggestion how to fetch mailbox content over high RTT link (with negligible packet loss)? [Dovecot] sieve: variable extension?

Hello, Dovecot. Does dovecot sieve supports variable extension (rfc5229)? It is very useful for users with large amount of mailing lists, as it allows to write only one rule for all lists (filtering by List-Id). If it is not supported, is here any plans to support it? Greetings all, I'll skip the details of the setup, except to say that it has a non-standard (and non-templateable) home directory path for virtual users. Ran into the following problem when a debian (possibly from backports) packaged dovecot-1.1.2 was upgraded to a dovecot-1.1.13-2~bpo50+1 (definately from backports): sieve-storage: root directory specified by mail data does not exist: ~/Maildir After some analysis, it would appear that ManageSieve (looks like 0.10.4 is included in the debian backports) doesn't do the tilde expansion before doing a stat test to see if the ~/Maildir exists. Hello I have installed Dovecot as a POP3 server, IMAP on my internal network, the authentication against Windows Active Directory. I would like to know how to setup a second server dovecot as my proxy server for external users outside the network, in another segment of different IP addresses, or at least define which mailboxes will be stored on another server to be accessible to both servers. I have reviewed the document on the wiki site, but I said that is only possible with mysql authentication, but as I said the road where the messages are stored, it is possible for NFS? Searched archive, but failed to find... :-( "deliver" does not honor user_global_* from dovecot-ldap.conf or userdb static{} also it looks like delivery attempts being made to %n/Maildir/cur ?? one other curious thing, use of ${recipient} in master.cf|deliver command causes the "passdb ldap" lookups to be completely ignored? only checks passdb and ignores userdb compleletely? IF I put noel(at)metc(dot)net into passwd.dovecot using passdb flatfile, auth and delivery seem to work. Thanks for any direction. I lament I couldn't get farther on my own. If you want to run Dovecot on Debian Lenny for a Production System (with Fast Upgrade System for Security Patches), What would you recommend? Hello all, I've got a test environment setup in preparation for a move from qmail/vpopmail/courier to postfix/padmin/dovecot. I have a number of questions that seem to span multiple pieces of software, and this is one of them... Our policy with spam filtering is that a user should be able to turn it off (ie: not put tagged spam into a spam folder, but deliver to their inbox) if they want to. Currently qmailadmin and a custom squirrelmail plugin give people the option to do this by dumping a .qmail file in their directory that calls a common maildrop script that will deliver spam to the spam folder. It looks like I can emulate this with sieve and something that can speak to Dovecot's managesieve server. Where I'm stuck is that if I want users to be able to do other custom filtering using sieve, how do I go about making sure that my common spam delivery rule does not get clobbered? This really has me a bit stumped. I see there's a global sieverc that can be included, but I need something along the lines of a per-user include that brings in the spam filtering rule that will "stick" until the user explicitly deletes it.
