Hello all, I am struggeling to get my Dovecot SASL to work within postfix. I have used the configuration example listed on the main-site of dovecot and it basically isn't giving me any success at all. I am probably missing something easy, but after spending a few days testing and walking through everything I could think about I thought figured it was better to ask :) Hope someone can point me to the right direction. My setup is that I have installed Ubuntu 9.04 (64bit), postfix and dovecot linked to a MySQL database. The services are using maildirs which are stored locally (no NFS). Postfix is using the LDA from dovecot to deliver the mail and dovecot is used for IMAP and POP3. This is working and no problems at all so far. The problem starts when I just want to enable the SASL authentication from Dovecot. [Dovecot] multiple connections per imap/pop3 process in 2.0

Is there another setting I have to change to enable multiple connections per imap/pop3 process in dovecot-2.0, or does it just not work yet? I tried changing client_limit=5 but that had no effect. (I suggest that master.conf needs more documentation.) Thanks.

Hi, I've been using dovecot for some time now, always with the setting: disable_plaintext_auth = yes so that no user can accidentally expose their username/password in the open. However, I'm now trying to configure a webmail client in a nearby server which doesn't support TLS or SSL IMAP connections :-( Is there any way to allow plaintext_auth only for a small set of IP addresses (for what I see in the comment, this is automatic for local addresses, alas, the webmail client is on another host). Hi All, Sorry if this is a dumb questions, but what methods are available for retrieving mail for a system user i.e www-data. Basically my setup is just a normal Dovecot-IMAP which is working fine for shell users, but I want to be able to read mail for system users via IMAP. Is this doable? Cheers

Hello all, I'm trying to run several instances of dovecot, with a different config each one, following the instructions from here: http://wiki.dovecot.org/RunningDovecot I try the command dovecot -c /etc/dovecot/installN/dovecot.conf and get: --- Error: ssl_cert_file: Can't use /etc/ssl/certs/dovecot.pem: No such file or directory Fatal: Invalid configuration in /etc/dovecot/installN --- but in my /etc/dovecot/installN/dovecot.conf file I have these lines: ssl_cert_file = /etc/dovecot/installN/ssl/certs/dovecot.pem ssl_key_file = /etc/dovecot/installN/ssl/private/dovecot.pem where both files exist and are valid. Fyi... Sam Varshavik (courier-imap developer) claims (on the courier-imap list, see attached) dovecot is incorrectly parsing messages with missing/invalid "MIME-Version:" header... I have no clue if he is correct... if so, maybe this has already been fixed?

Hi, I'm using Dovecot with LDAP. My users have an home directory and a field named 'mailMessageStore'. Then the full mailbox path is 'homeDirectory/mailMessageStore' In dovecot-ldap.conf i configured as follows : user_filter = (&(objectClass=qmailUser)(cn=%u)) user_attrs = qmailUID=uid,qmailGID=gid,homeDirectory=home,mailMessageStore=mail=maildir:~/%$ Everything is working as expected but... I'm using sieve and in the 'dovecot.conf' there is no way to get a variable containing the mailbox path... Currently Dovecot works like this when authentication fails: - the delay is always at least auth_failure_delay seconds (default: 2s) - each failed attempt doubles the delay for that specific imap/pop3 connection (no such delays for e.g. smtp) - the delay's upper limit is 3 minutes For v2.0 I was planning on making dovecot-auth process do these checks and keeping the state in anvil process: - the delay is always at least auth_failure_delay seconds (default: 2s) - for each remote IP address the delay is doubled, regardless of how the request comes (imap, pop3, smtp, etc). - the delay's upper limit is .. hardcoded to 15 secs? i kind of hate the thought of making this configurable. - each successful authentication from the IP resets the IP's delay - the delay happens before authentication is even attempted, so even successful auth attempts will have the delay (unless of course there haven't been auth failures from that IP) If the upper limit is 15 secs, that means max. 240 auth attempts per hour per IP. The reason I was thinking 15 secs is because I have some vague memories about Thunderbird dropping connection after 15 or maybe 30 seconds of idling. If user has one successful login, it's of course possible to get around the delay doubling by just doing failed attempt -> successful attempt -> failed -> success -> etc. But probably no one is really going to try to do that, and even if they did it's still not that bad. The second successful login will still have that 2 second delay before it resets the delay. So that's still max one auth/2 seconds or max. 1800 auth attempts/hour. Any thoughts?

Hi, I am not yet completely happy with the logging behavior of the lmtp. It logs informative messages like 'lmtp: Info: Connection closed' or 'lmtp: Info: Disconnected for inactivity'. Hm, which server was connected to the lmtp? Who was disconnected for inactivity? I think it would be useful if the lmtp would also log new connections. For example: a) TCP connections: lmtp: Info: Connection: rip=10.1.2.3, lip=10.1.2.5, cid=1255555555.12345 b) Socket connections: lmtp: Info: Connection: via socket, cid=1255555777.10452 rip: There may be multiple SMTP servers in front the IMAP server(s) lip: The lmpt may listen to more than one address cid: The 'connection ID', consists of the current unix time and the pid of the lmtp process. (Or some other values in some other format) The cid should be used in the 'saved' messages. So the delivering MTA would see something like '250 2.0.0 OK: 1255555555.12345 Saved', instead of a message like '250 2.0.0 <jdoe(a)example.com> Saved'. The lmtp should also write the cid to the log. For example: 'lmtp(jdoe): Info: msgid=123, cid=1255555555.12345: saved mail to INBOX' (or discarded because of a matching sieve rule). Hello Everyone, First wanted to say thanks for any help in advance. I have a clustered mail system each running on centos 5.2. I have a test box that I am running the newest version on dovecot on and I am getting some random authnication failed errors. Here is the error below: Nov 04 17:31:22 auth(default): Error: worker-server(xxx(a)xxxx.com): Aborted: Lookup timed out Nov 04 17:31:23 auth(default): Info: client out: FAIL 2 user=xxx(a)xxxx.com temp The thing is, the errors only show when the user is attempting to send a message. Hello, is my understanding of the parameter "imap_idle_notify_interval" right, if i say, it's the time between two point where dovecot tells the client he is here, and sould have nothing directly todo with the notification of new mails arrived. I played with the values around. And the courios is, in thunderbird the folloing. set to 30 seconds. Thunderbird pop up around 25 seconds after the message is deliverd to the inbox. set to 60 seconds. Thunderbird pup up around 50 seconds after the message is deliverd to the inbox. [Dovecot] defunct in 1.24 on FreeBSD Alphaserver

Hello, I've recently upgraded Dovecot from 1.1.16 to 1.2.4 on FreeSBD 6.3- RELEASE running on old Alphaserver 1200. Some time after this upgrade all user's MUAs showed error that user password was not accepted. I've noticed many zombies of imap and pop3 processes on my server (all in defunct state). Looks like when "login_max_processes_count" was reached, Dovecot canceled all new connections. I've setup completely new configuration based on http://wiki.dovecot.org/TestInstallation and no error was produced but every time I closed telnet the imap process became defunct. So, I tried to trace what was happening with ktrace: ktrace -d -f log -p pid_of_imap_process In attached file is a part of ktrace output at the moment when I close telnet connection. What is interesting (at last for me, but I'm lamer) is an error: 1576 imap 1256902587.568406 CALL close(0xffffffffffffffff) 1576 imap 1256902587.568448 RET close -1 errno 9 Bad file descriptor AFAIK, such error could be produced by inconsistent file system so I double checked OS and I'm 100% sure it's OK. At the very end of this history I had to switch back to 1.1.16 version of Dovecot which works OK now. Good Morning I´m writing back cause the IMAP going down issue has changed a little, i still have the dovecot-1.0.7-7.el5 but with 2 changes; I added to the dovecot.conf the outlook-idle workaround, and the three login_processes parameters login_process_per_connection = yes login_processes_count = 3 login_max_processes_count = 128 Since I added this parameters the IMAP process has gone down just 1 time in 2 weeks, before this, the proccess was going down about 4 times a day so I think this is suitable, the next step i´ll take is to update the Dovecot. [Dovecot] Why : dovecot_destination_recipient_limit = 1 ?

Hi all, I'm trying to activate sieve. In all tutorials I have seen I need to set dovecot_destination_recipient_limit = 1 in Postfix's main.cf. Can anyone explain why ? Hello list, The dovecot version is 1.2.6 running on Solaris x86 11 (nv-b91). The relevant configuration lines are: passdb ldap { # LDAP database (doc/wiki/AuthDatabase.LDAP.txt.) args = /pfx/etc/dovecot/dovecot-ldap.conf } The file dovecot-ldap.conf is correct and LDAP authentication is working well. We would like to make it possible for users with a X.509 client certificate to log in without providing LDAP or any other credentials. Is there something like: passdb x509 { args = /pfx/etc/dovecot/dovecot-caroots.pem nopwd = yes } ...avaibable, or is there another solution? Thanks, Brian

Hallo. In our dovecot 1.2.6 server running under Solaris 9 I would like to set up a second quota root because the mail folders are in the users home directories and the inboxes of all users are in /var/mail. As soon as I add quota2 = fs:INBOX:noenforcing:mount=/var/mail the imap client crashes repeatedly as soon as the user tries to open a mail folder. Thanks for any help. Just saw this new twist to an issue I reported last week with dovecot-2.0.alpha2. I logged into an IMAP account using telnet to port 143. After 30 seconds dovecot closed the connection. Hi all, I'm trying to config a dovecot server on a debian-lenny box but I'm experiencing a problem that serveral users have on the net, but I haven't found any solution. [Dovecot] Dovecot in-house benchmarking

Hi, Before some major changes in our infrastructure, I was interested in the performance impact of moving indexes to our NAS (Emc Celerra v5.5). So I downloaded both dovecot-1.1.19 and dovecot-1.2.6, compiled them and wrote 2 confs for each of them, one with local indexes and another with indexes in the NAS. Then I created 19 pam users, and tested system performance this way: - uninstall current installed version - install a new version - start dovecot - for each user run: imaptest user=user pass=pass host=localhost port=143 mbox=${MBOX} seed=123 secs=300 | tail -1 > file - stop dovecot I'm not sure if these tests are real, but our results are: * In our conf, 1.1.19 and 1.2.6 performance are roughly the same * Moving the indexes to our NAS makes the system 3 times slower As we currently only have 1 system accessing mails or indexes, I tried later with nfs_* = no, and mmap_disable = no. This makes performance 10% better in any situation. Our testing setup (very close to the real one) - Dell PowerEdge 2850, 2 P4 Xeon 3GHz, 3GB RAM - RHEL 4.7 (not sure about this, the last RHEL4) 32 bits - mailboxes are always in a nfs filesystem - for testing mbox file I've used dovecot-cvs.mbox I've attached a couple of graphs to show this results (I've a lot of them, but result are pretty close from one to another). Also, dovecot -n output for 1.2.6 with indexes in the NAS. Only needed changes have been applied from one conf to another. If you feel that the benchmark can be more "real" with some changes, just tell me. Also, if you are interested in the rest of graphs or date, tell me. [Dovecot] How to see if sieve is active ?

Hi, I think I activated sieve, but it's doing nothing. I know manage-sieve works so I made some rules. But they do nothing. I ran sieve-test, which seems to work, but does not move the mail I test. Is this how it works ? I thought the -e parameter just "tested" the rules and did nothing and my command was supposed to do the "real thing". I read there should be a log. I don't find this, how should I enable this ? I just found that lda can have a separate log. I'll enable this and see. I read the wiki-page different times, but I don't see what I'm doing wrong. I attached some files. Sieve-test.txt is the command and output from sieve-test. Phpscript.sieve is the file .dovecot.sieve points to, and dovecot-config is my dovecot config ;-). [Dovecot] dovecot-shared and shared "\Seen" flags

(Running Dovecot 1.1.0) Is it possible to either - (a) Still have shared "\Seen" flags even while using the dovecot-shared file or (b) Indicate to Dovecot in some way other than the dovecot-shared file which permissions to use for any messages created? The problem is, in my shared folder (using symlinks) scenario I am using, I have to use the dovecot-shared file to make sure new messages get written with the correct user and group permissions so that everyone appropriate can access them, but I still would like the functionality of the shared "\Seen" flags in these shared/symlinked folders (which having dovecot-shared seems to knock out). Is it possible to do both somehow? Dave

Option (a) sounds like the cleanest solution, but a bit of testing showed that Postfix doesn't wait on deliver before replying to DATA so this seems to always result in a bounce. I've perused the postfix documentation but so far no luck; if anyone reading this has any insight on how we might configure postfix to behave this way, could you please let me know (maybe offlist would be best, as this may be considered somewhat off-topic). We are using something similar to option (b) currently, but it's not really an elegant approach and we would really like to move away from it. [Dovecot] Question about Windows Mail for Vista IMAP client

When TBird logs on, it does it quietly, that is it opens one or two logins. When you start working it'll open a few more. Quiet, no thrashing around When WM4Vista opens, it appears to login and disconnect (immediately) once for every folder a person has. 20 folders, 20 logins and disconnect, ripple fire. Anybody have an idea why WM4V is so busy and TB is quiet doing the same thing? [Dovecot] Multiple LDAP Userdb lookups

Hello one & all, I understand it is possible to do multiple lookups for userdb info of different types, for instance a local "real" account & virtual MySql lookups. Is it possible to do two separate ldap lookups to differnt parts of the same AD domain? I have a config file to do my authentication lookup against the domain. Then I have a 2nd config file for the userdb lookups which uses ldap to query our AD for their userdb info. I need to query a 2nd part of the AD for another group of users & unfortunately putting all users into one container isn't possible. [Dovecot] Thunderbird and Trash folder

Hello, I have my problems with the Trash folder in thunderbird. Most of the times (it did work, but only for a short period) Thunderbird is not considering the "Trash" folder (or in my case the "Papierkorb") as the trash folder. The symbol disappears and I am not able to delete folders. Deleted emails are disappearing at all. The usual Google solutions like maildir vs. mbox doesn't help a lot, I am using maildir and the directory structure looks fine. I noticed that I have two trash folders, one with "INBOX.", one without. That may be a problem with Squirrelmail, because I am using both Thunderbird and Squirrelmail. Hello; I was reading the message "how to config dovecot for multiple domains, multiple SSL certs, and conditional IP access -- with passwd-file passdb?", and i was wondering if Dovecot could support the SNI extention of TLS ? SNI is Server Name Indication where during the TLS negotiation, the client set the name of the server it tries to reach I dont know if any imap/pop client support this yet, but this would be a great feature for one IP/multiple virtual domains. I run dovecot 1.2.6, before last update I had 1.2.2. on Debian Lenny. I noticed that my config directory /etc/dovecot is filled up with hundreds of old auth-worker.12345 sockets. I guess they should have been cleaned up, is there a misconfiguration? When I remember right, this did not happen with dovecot 1.1.

Hello all, I use dovecot11-1.1.7-1.4.1 with OpenSuse 11.1. Everything works fine, except the vacation with managesieve. When i send a mail to an address with vacation, i recieve back a vacation message, but i read an error like this into dovecot-deliver.log: Error: file_dotlock_create(~/.dovecot.lda-dupes) failed: No such file or directory And then the vacation is send any time, without limits. I think the problem is dovecot can't find home directory for the mail to write the .dovecot.lda-dupes, but i don't know how to specify that. Hello list, I have noticed that sieve vacation action breaks some non-english letters in the subject. I tested with russian language, if subject contains letters from specific diapason russian alphabet, the message received with unreadable subject, but text in the body with the same letters looks ok. Here is example of full subject header, it contains russian alphabet: Subject: абвгде�?жзийклмноп�?�?�?�?�?�?�?�?�?�?�?�?�?�?�?�? Hello All! I`m using dovecot 1.2.6 I have folder named in russian "САПП", and when in filter i wrote: fileinto "САПП"; all works well. Now i find 2 web applications to manage sieve filters (horde-ingo and squirrelmail/avelsieve) - then creates filter like this: if header :contains "Subject" "САПП" { fileinto "&BCEEEAQfBB8-"; stop; } And creates another folder ".&-BCEEEAQfBB8-", but GOOD folder name already exist ".&BCEEEAQfBB8-". Please help to understand why dovecots deliver make this happen. [Dovecot] antispam-plugin 1.2 and trailing carriage-returns

Guys, Dovecot 1.0.15 [1], just built the latest antispam-plugin 1.2 (tarball) for testing, mailtrain backend for SA integration. Both built from custom spec files. The mail that is being trained is different than its respective source in the mbox file. The trained one shows added, trailing carriage-return chars for all headers, which are not in the headers in the mbox file. This breaks sa-learn -- both these variations are different, and SA would learn *both* when run against each one separately. How comes? Any insight? How could I fix this, other than wrapping the sa-learn inside another shell script and have sed strip off the noise? This becomes more of an issue, once I switch from sa-learn to the lightning-fast spamc training variant. TIA guenther [1] Yes, I know, sorry. [Dovecot] Dovecot, Shared Mailboxes (via symlink), and ACLs

Hello! I just joined the list and will be happy to help where I can in my limited experience, but also come to the table with a question. I think there's something I'm missing regarding shared mailboxes and ACLs, so I will describe my situation and see if I am understanding correctly (running Dovecot 1.1.10). I have read over the Dovecot Wiki many times and have scoured many forums but still can't seem to find a solution. I have an IMAP mailbox that is working fine (user imapuser), so the maildir and related structure is in: /home/imapuser/Maildir I have another IMAP mailbox for another imap user, newuser1, also working fine, with maildir and related structure in: /home/newuser1/Maildir I have created a symlink under newuser1's Maildir to imapuser's Maildir so as to give newuser1 access to the things in imapusers's inbox. I have also symlinked inside the newuser1 Maildir to a folder under imapusers's inbox, let's call it "MailingList", basically settiing up something like: /home/newuser1/Maildir: cur/ .imapuserinbox -> /home/imapuser/Maildir .imapusermailinglist -> /home/imapuser/Maildir/MailingList new/ tmp/ (... and various other Dovecot-related files, nothing ACL related.) Now, I have gotten the shared boxes to work IF I changed the permissions to be rwx for user and group on /home/imapuser/Maildir/*, but this makes procmail (and .procmailrc) unhappy and it starts sending things to mbox files (old system) instead of sending them on to the Maildir. So that doesn't seem to work. Which led me to ACLs. Now, I've tried (after enabling the two appropriate lines in dovecot.conf and restarting dovecot, etc) both per-directory ACL files and global ACLs, and while I can get some things to *change* as viewed by my mail client, I can't seem to create consistent behavior. I know that's fairly vague, but it's like I'll change something in the global ACL and folders are affected that I wouldn't anticipate, based on what I'm understanding of ACLs. So, in the example above, if I enable global ACLs, what names do I use to refer to those shared boxes I'm trying to access? Do I use the link name I made, .imapuserinbox or .imapusermailinglist (without leading periods), like /etc/dovecot/acls/imapuserinbox, or is it based off of the original dir name? Like do I need something like /etc/dovecot/acls/MailingList ? What about the "inbox" I'm sharing in /home/imapuser/Maildir, how do I reference that? Is there a way to do it without affecting or changing permissions of other IMAP users and inboxes on the same system? One thing I am receiving consistently in the error logs is: mail dovecot: IMAP(newuser1): stat(/home/newuser1/Maildir/.imapuserinbox/tmp) failed: Permission denied (euid=152(newuser1) egid=100(usergroup) UNIX perms seem ok, ACL problem?) Hi, I'm not sure if this question has been asked before but some googling hasn't turned up anything really relevant. We are currently running Dovecot 1.1.16 & Postfix; maildir++. When a message arrives for a mailbox which is over quota, it is bounced. Obviously, this isn't very desirable; the primary downside to this is that when junk mail hits a full mailbox it's bounced to that recipient of the message. On a busy mail system, that could potentially get us blacklisted pretty quickly. Ideally we would like to reject the messages inline. Is there an easy way to set this up? Thanks, Marty

Hi list, I am trying to get rid of the "Error: file_dotlock_create(~/.dovecot.lda-dupes) failed: No such file or directory" by adding home directories to my virtual users (ldap). I want this home dir' to be specified like this: /var/vmail/$USER/home/ and the sieve scripts to go to: /var/vmail/$USER/home/sieve/ So as suggested before in this list, I have replaced: user_attrs = mailMessageStore=mail,mailQuotaSize=quota_rule=*:bytes=%$ by user_attrs = mailMessageStore=mail,mailQuotaSize=quota_rule=*:bytes=%$, =home=/var/vmail/%u/home But then the userdb lookup fail and it tells me this in the log: deliver(user@mydomain): Error: userdb lookup: connect(/usr/local/var/run/dovecot/auth-master) failed: No such file or directory This is strange because: a. the socket is at /var/run/dovecot/auth-master b. it is working flawlessly with the original user_attrs value So I am thinking that this setting is totally ignored by dovecot at some point. I must be missing something. Any help please ? Using FreeBSD-7.2 and Dovecot v1.2.4 what user does dovecot use to write to its log file? I have the logfile located in the /var/log directory. I have Postfix configured to use 'virtual' users and use dovecot for delivery. While dove can write to the file when accessed for POP services, when accessed via Postfix, I get this error message: Oct 25 07:02:15 scorpio postfix/pipe[56956]: B01BD2287E: to=<user(a)domain.com>, relay=dovecot, delay=220, delays=220/0.01/0/0.04, dsn=4.3.0, status=deferred (temporary failure. Command output: Can't open log file /var/log/dovecot.log: Permission denied ) I have used the following ownership types for the file: 1) root:wheel 2) dovecot:dovecot 3) root:dovecot 4) dovecot:wheel The only thing that works all the time is to give the file full r/w (0666) permission. [Dovecot] SetUID check problem

Running dovecot 1.2.4 on FreeBSD using Postfix. Everything works fine normally, but deliver is executable by world. This is not normally a problem, as I don't run deliver SetUID root. But for whatever reason, when deliver is called by something that IS SetUID root I get the following error: /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/deliver must not be both world-executable and setuid-root. This allows root exploits. See http://wiki.dovecot.org/LDA#multipleuids Deliver's permissions look like this: -r-xr-xr-x While the program calling deliver has permissions like this: -r-s--x--- If it isn't possible for deliver to differentiate between being called by setuid root programs and being setuid root itself I don't think it should be doing that particular security check. Alternatively, there should be an option to turn that particular check off, but what little I saw of the source code and found searching the documentation told me that there doesn't seem to be such an option already. I want to test out my first V1.2 Dovecot (upgraded from V1.1) instance. What I have in mind to do is to run it on another machine that has the Inbox dir and homedirs NFS import mounted from the production mailserver. I then have 5 people test it in this test environment.... A) Then I can deal with the index filesystem in one of two ways: 1) Make it local OR 2) NFS import it from the production DC server Comments as to which is best? I have used #1 before...which caused some temporary unhappiness with the switchover and switchback....during which time the index is badly wrong and DC auto-rebuilds it... B) Is there anything else I should do/not do? [Dovecot] Multiple identities

Hi, I recently moved from courier-imap to dovecot, to be able to work with managesieve. I use version 1.2.5, on suse 10.3. I used the script to migrate the courier maildir to dovecot format. It seems to work fine except for one problem : I use a number of aliasses and with Thunderbird I can select which alias (e-mail-address) to use as my identity when sending a mail. I sniffed with wireshark, and with my standard identity, I see the message appended to "Sent", like I expect. If I use an alias, I see a folder being created : "INBOX.Sent", and then the message is appended there. Why the difference ? I'm trying to debug this but dovecot does not help much. I tried rawlog but there is no output (that I see) from it, no log-files in my maildir. Any hints how to proceed ? [Dovecot] Multiple postfix + single dovecot - optimal configuration

Hello, I want to setup dovecot with two postfix servers on three machines: - dovecot - with huge amount of disk space - where all user emails will be kept, - postfix1 - with greylisting, amavisd-new (spamassassin, clamav, etc), with mysql backend, - postfix2 - same as postfix1. MX priority will be set to the same value for both postfix machines. For now I don't know how to "glue" these severs: - if I should install dovecot on both postfix and use third servers as a NFS share? - or maybe it is possible to communicate with dovecot on third server via LMTP? - or should I run third postfix daemon (without antyspam etc - simple configuration) on the same machine as dovecot only for delivering local mails? I will be grateful for any advice, howto or good practices example. -- Regards, Thomas.

Using FreeBSD-7.2, I am attempting to configure the system newsyslog utility to rotate the dovecot.log file. I would prefer to use the system utility rather than the one described on the dovecot wiki for rotating the file. Unfortunately, it is not working. This is the error message that is spawned: newsyslog: illegal signal number in config file: /var/log/dovecot.log root:wheel 0666 1 * $M1D0 CJ /var/run/dovecot/master.pid USR1 Does anyone have an idea how to get this to work? This fixes several settings and some other problems, plus it's now also possible for a single imap/pop3 process to handle multiple connections. Some day perhaps there should be a new service in the middle that keeps track of existing connections and forwards new ones to right mail processes. v2.0.beta1 TODO list: - master.conf has to be somehow put into defaults, so doveconf -n doesn't show its contents. an example master.conf would be minimal and show only those settings that admin might want to change (and those would show up in doveconf -n) - verbose_proctitle=yes is now quite useless because of the imap/pop3 process creation change. Probably enable linux-proctitle-hack and start changing the proctitle much more often. For example it could contain the command that's currently being run by user. And login processes could contain how many client connections they currently have. Hi, one Fedora user complains about not some troubles after update to dovecot 1.2. He suspects wrong capability information given by dovecot 1.2 In dovecot.conf he uses imap_capability= option. Hi! I'm currently running Dovecot 1.1.8 on a HP server using CentOS 5.2 as my IMAP server, receiving mail from postfix, and also using squirrelmail as the frontend. As I look at upgrading the mail server, I'd like to change to a higher availability configuration (where the server can fail and I don't have to reconfig my imap users). For the SMTP that's easy, because I can use multiple MX records, and I can redirect a port forward from one server to another. But IMAP doesn't have the same functionality, because it's the storage that matters. What's the "best" way to do that? Clustered servers using a SAN? NAS? some sort of appliance in front? [Dovecot] Need a little shadow to MySQL conversion help

Excuse me for being stupid and confused. I'm trying to convert my dovecot install from passwd-file to mysql. I have a single table called "users" that has 3 fields, user_name, domain_name and password. The data came from passwd/shadow files so it uses the same password encryption as the shadow files do. The directory where the email is stored is calculated elsewhere and not stored in the database. The UID and GID are both mail for all virtual users. The user logs in passing the full email address and the password. So - what would be the config for using MySQL? Do I even need a userdb? If so - what would it be? Thanks in advance.

[Dovecot] VZW Blackberry BIS problems?

Ever since Columbus day things have been strange with my two dovecot servers, according to my Blackberry users. We do not have a BES just the standard BIS that comes with a personal account. Several people have told me that since that Monday that they get occasional duplicate copies of messages which only appear singularly in their Maildir inboxes. I myself even called VZW and got transferred to RIM themselves where they 'reset' my account; (same as me going into the BIS server and deleting and adding again) only to have the same thing happen; again occasionally.. I'm assuming this is a BIS issue of some sort, but I can't tell. After looking on the wiki I didn't see anything that says "BIS users look here for tips.. " So I'm assuming there aren't any; I think it should just work with the IMAP server.. Any help would be appreciated as everyone thinks this is 'our problem' and "if we had an exchange server we wouldn't be having these problems.." Thanks in advance..

Hi All I'm trying to implement public folders. My dovecot -n readout is at the bottom. I do not see resumes. Hello, Dovecot documentation states that the "random redirects to multiple servers" NFS solution is to be avoided and I'm investigation the actual risks of it and a way to put it to test. I'm running dovecot-1.2.6 with Maildir (indexes, mailboxes and control files are all on NFS) and I'm using procmail instead of deliver as the LDA. 1. Documentation says : "Dovecot locks the maildir while doing modifications to it or while looking for new messages in it" and then mention the "dovecot-uidlist.lock" dotlock file. a) if that file fcntl'ed in addition (i.e. dotlocked + fcntled or just dotlocked) ? b) is that file THE way to lock the Maildir mentionned above or is it just something else used only for updating that particular file (i.e. is Maildir locked in some way + dovecot-uidlist.lock created or just dovecot-uidlist.lock created) ? 2. Documentation says : "NFS caching is a big problem when multiple computers are accessing the same mailbox simultaneously" I guess it's because of the dotlocks files and not fcntl locking ? Is there anything else than dovecot-uidlist which is dotlocked ? If yes, is it dotlocked only or dotlocked and fcntled ? 3. Documentation says : "Dovecot v1.1 flushes NFS caches when needed if you set mail_nfs_storage=yes" How can a program flush the NFS caches ? By which (system) call ? 4. Documentation says : "Besides the NFS cache problems described above, mailbox contents can't be cached as well in the memory either." Is it about in-memory indexes or part of indexes loaded into memory ? 5. How can I torture-test concurrent access to the same mailbox through 2 dovecot servers ? I don't see imaptest.c anymore on http://dovecot.org/tools but I see 2 nfs_test ? Is there some command line options I should use ? 6. when and why can a random redirect to multiple server can cause mailbox corruption ? On flags only or on content as well ? [Dovecot] deliver+sieve: Destination address (-a) parsing changes

When I upgraded my old, long running dovecot 1.1 to newer dovecot-1.2.4 + doevecot-sieve- 0.1.12 I observed a change in destination address (-a) parsing. Old behaviour: When Timo introduced this feature (http://www.dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2007-September/025813.html) it was possible to hand over only the detail part. In my sendmail configuration I used "-a +$h", where $h contains the detail part and may be empty. By default sendmail can call the delivery agent with the following information: $u: The recipient user (always set) $h: Detail part, may be empty $g: The sender address (relative to the recipient). New behaviour: The current sieve version needs a complete address with local- and domain-part. Otherwise we get a warning like deliver(user): sieve: envelope recipient address 'user' is unparseable. The problem is, that the domain part is not always available, e.g. for local delivered emails. This is the main problem, although the setup could be simplified if deliver would accept the old syntax. I'm going to make modifications to sendmail to be able to have all address information available, but this will not solve the problem with missing domain. Now comes my question: Is it better to enhance the address parsing in sieve plugin or should I use a wrapper around deliver? This issue is resolved by replacing : maildir:~/Maildir:INDEX=/tmp/QUOTA/index/%u:CONTROL=/tmp/QUOTA/control/%u with maildir:~/Maildir any idea on the reason of these duplicates or workarounds to prevent them while keeping indexes in /tmp. [Dovecot] IMAP goes down from time to time

My problem is that our Dovecot IMAP is stopping from time to time with no info in the log, i just realize about this when our support person call me saying that the whatsup monitor is showing the IMAP4 process down. I can figure about this too by trying to get in our webmail Horde and i cannot login. [Dovecot] Question about IMAP IDLE (and Palm Pre)

Hello, i try to understand, how it works (IDLE). Try to get it successfully work with my new Palm Pre ;-) which looks like to have a lot issues wir imap... so i'll blame not dovecot for the issues. Sent a mail, from googlemail. processed by dovecot ad 12:11. what me now confusing, is, that there in the out-log is nothing visible, I expected, to see there was sent an notification, there was a new mail. Do i miss something? After arounde 15 minutes the Palm sent a "DONE" and reconnect. then the messages was received. [Dovecot] deliver and stale NFS file handles

Hello, since updating two of our backup mailservers from dovecot 1.1.16 to 1.2.4 i get the following errors from dovecot-deliver when receiving (smtp) mail. Refer to server log for more information. [2009-10-16 00:10:42] It nearly never happens with text/plain mails but _very_ often when mails have attachments of some different type. This is inside a 7.2-RELEASE-p2 FreeBSD jail. The NFS export is mounted from the machine that is running the jail. Locking with lockf works. Hi, the conversion from courier was done without problems, but now I have a problem with my auth config. I followed the sql example included in the latest dovecot source, and put driver=mysql in dovecot.conf (outside any section), and now I get: --- Error: Error in configuration file /usr/local/etc/dovecot.conf line 50: Unknown setting: driver Fatal: Invalid configuration in /usr/local/etc/dovecot.conf Starting DovecotError: Error in configuration file /usr/local/etc/dovecot.conf line 50: Unknown setting: driver Fatal: Invalid configuration in /usr/local/etc/dovecot.conf --- So I'm lost... what's wrong? if I followed the example :o Then, another question: I had to go back to courier so my users still can work, but I already created the files using the migration script: do I need to rerun the migration script? or what do I need to do when I manage to fix the error above and run dovecot? @2.0's master.conf, there's, e.g., service config { type= config executable =config unix_listener { path = config mode = 0666 } } can someone please explain function/usage for the 'type', 'executable' & 'path' fields? and, for any file paths, are the presumed to be _relative_ to the dovecot executable? in $PATH? can they accept full/absolute paths? thanks.

Hello, I need to migrate from courier-imap to dovecot. I'm trying to use courier-dovecot-migrate.pl to migrate the users' maildirs but I'm getting these messages: --- # courier-dovecot-migrate.pl --to-dovecot --recursive mydomain.com Testing conversion to Dovecot format Finding maildirs under mydomain.com mydomain.com/contact/./Maildir: No imap/pop3 uidlist files mydomain.com/someone/./Maildir/courierpop3dsizelist: Broken header: /1 9 Can't use string ("0") as a HASH ref while "strict refs" in use at /usr/local/sbin/courier-dovecot-migrate.pl line 300. --- The courierpop3dsizelist files have contents like this one: --- /1 9 1181869523.M278844P24357V000000000000080CI006E803B_0.email,S=1216:2, 1241 8 --- and it seems that the script is failing with all the maildirs with courierpop3dsizelist.
