[Dovecot] Several errors

Hi, Running OS: CentOS 5.3 (2.6.18-128.2.1.el5) 1. My Linux distribution comes with Dovecot 1.0.7. After trying to make it running, I encoutnered many problems. So I decided to upgrade to 1.2.1. When running dovecot -r from CLI, it returns with version 1.2.1. But at the top of the log file it says: Info: Dovecot v1.0.7 starting up So I am not sure which version I am running. That's the first problem. The other two problems I am having were also actual before updating to 1.2.1: 2. [Dovecot] Are host names a secret?

Some time ago I added the ability for IMAP clients to fetch messages' GUIDs using FETCH X-GUID command. Because of a bug it wasn't working in 1.2.0 or 1.2.1, but I've fixed it now. But now I'm starting to wonder: With Maildirs the GUIDs are the maildir base filenames, which contain host names. Is it a bad idea to expose them to users?

[Dovecot] Maildir from offlineimap, INBOX folder created

Hi, I'm using dovecot to serve up a Maildir created/served by offlineimap. The layout is typical (as far as I know) of maildirs, with the root folder having cur, tmp, new, and subfolders being a folder within the root folder. Since I'd previously used Evolution to access this maildir, my subfolders were actual subfolders (separator /). Anyway, it all works spiffingly well, except that I can't see my inbox at all. What happens is that attempting to subscribe to Inbox will create an INBOX folder in the root folder, which is (of course) empty, so I see an empty folder. When the mail got back, postfix gave it to dovecot deliver, which then passed to cmusieve. Hi, I'm hoping to upgrade to 1.2 in the next couple of days. I remember seeing something mentioning some sort of config change, but unfortunately I don't remember where I saw it nor what the config option was. Hi, I'm using version 1.2.1 with acl. How do I use acl_shared_dict? Especially with file:-dictionary. What's the layout of that file? Is it possible that the file is ignored with the current version? If the file doesn't exist or isn't readable, I don' get any error message. Best regards, Sven

Hello Dovecot users, Relatively many bugs and problems were reported recently in a short period of time. Apparently, now that Dovecot v1.2 is finally stable, the new Sieve plugin is also starting to get used much more. No known bugs remain. Let's hope I didn't spawn any new ones. Apart from the bugfixes I made the deprecated notify plugin implementation compatible with CMUSieve. You can use it, but keep in mind that the (rather stupid) denotify command is not (yet) implemented and that the $text$ substitution does not work (yes, there is a world of differences compared to enotify). Changelog Sieve v0.1.9: * Removed the unfinished sieve-filter tool from the default build. It is now only built when the --with-unfinished-features switch is supplied during configure. + Started building support for the ereject version of the reject action, which has a preference to use an SMTP/LMTP protocol error in stead of a bounce message. This is to be used to make the Sieve plugin honour Deliver's -e parameter. This is not yet finished and not built by default. + Improved 'Permission denied' error messages just like Dovecot does, precisely specifying what permission is missing to access or create a file. + Added additional headers to the list of allowed headers for the address test. The restrictive nature of the address test is not always appropriate. Still thinking of a better, less restrictive implementation. + Made the deprecated notify extension compatible with the old CMUSieve plugin. However, the denotify command and the $text$ substitution are not yet supported. + Made the discard action log a message to avoid confusion about disappearing messages. - Fixed behavior of fileinto when delivering into a namespace prefix. It now uses silent delivery into INBOX as fallback. - Fixed logging of folder namespace prefix upon delivery into a prefixed namespace. Formerly it only logged the bare folder name. - Fixed a potential segfault in the argument validation. It didn't surface because no command could have a :tag followed by an associated parameter as last argument. - Fixed segfault bug occuring in envelope test when performed on null (<>) envelope path. The fix involves a rather large restructuring of the code to make sure envelope addresses are properly handled everywhere (bug reported by Nikita Koshikov) - Envelope: fixed bug in application of address parts; failure to obtain the part would cause inappropriate match success (bug reported by Ron Lee) - Fixed extension conflict checks during validation. It could sometimes produce useless errormessages. [Dovecot] Compiling Dovecot

I'm attempting to compile Dovecot 1.2.1 from source with support for ManageSieve, with little success. ./configure seems to complete successfully, but make fails with the message: make: *** No targets. Stop. I checked the Makefile, and it's empty. I run into the same problem no matter the configure options, with or without the managesieve patch applied, and even with earlier versions (I also tried 1.2.0 and 1.1.17 just to see if it would work, but no go). I've had no problems compiling other software, so I'm at a bit of a loss here. Any thoughts?

In 1.2.1 there's: passdb-pam.c:230 status = pam_get_item(pamh, PAM_USER, &item); passdb-pam.c:237 auth_request_set_field(request, "user", item, NULL); so "item" is PAM_USER, which is then checked by auth_request_set_field: 1022 if (strcmp(request->user, value) != 0) { 1023 auth_request_log_debug(request, "auth", 1024 "username changed %s -> %s", 1025 request->user, value); that it hasn't changed. You're not allowed to assume that PAM_USER doesn't change. See, for example, http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/libs/pam/Linux-PAM-html/adg-security-user-i… to say nothing of the fact that Rutgers has PAM modules that do exactly that (change PAM_USER). This check needs to be relaxed (or, perhaps if you want a config directive for DontComplyWithThePAMSpec = true, you can have a tunable). Can this be as simple as ditching the call to auth_request_set_field, or is there concern over interactions between PAM and other auth features?

[Dovecot] Defunct processes w/ v1.2.1

I have limited information at the moment (currently distracted by other projects) but I'm hoping that someone has already found and solved this problem. I have a v1.2.1 installed on my development box waiting for me to tinker with the configuration. On several occasions, I have noticed that all the dovecot processes are listed as "defunct". I don't recall seeing anything significant in the logs the last time I checked. The system is not under any load. Has anyone else encountered this before? If not, I will dig deeper. Hello list, After enabling virtual plugin in dovecot config, I got imap segmentation faults from time to time. This error may be caused by the bug in utc_offset.c. How do you think?

My exim configuration have system filter enable, which restrict some attachments, like exe, vbs etc. When message with forbidden attachment received, exim accept the message, then construct bounce-message(Reject reason + original message) and returns it to sender. Trying to deliver such messages, I always get segmentation faults and message stayed in exim's queue. Others common delivers work fine. This only happens with bouncing system-filter messages. Steps to reproduce: 1) Create message with forbiden attachment 2) Send message. 3) Get segmentation fault. hi all, I'm a long time courier-imap user and just switched to dovecot-1.2.1. my MTA is qmail and all user accounts are virtual vpopmail users. getting dovecot to work was mostly painless, but I am desperately trying to share a user's mailbox and can't seem to figure out how. unfortunately the documentation is not very helpful. I am trying to share the mailbox /home/vpopmail/domains/ example.com/someuser/Maildir here's what I put in dovecot.conf: namespace shared { separator = . prefix = shared.%%u. location = maildir:/home/vpopmail/domains/%%d/%%n/Maildir:INDEX=~/Maildir/shared/%%u subscriptions = no list = yes } I then logged in as someuser and did a "setacl anyone Inbox lrip". /home/vpopmail/domains/example.com/shared-mailboxes.db now contains an entry shared/shared-boxes/anyone/someuser(a)example.com 1 and /home/vpopmail/domains/example.com/someuser/Maildir/dovecot-acl has anyone ilpr however, when I connect to the server, the client does not see the "shared" namespace. also, dovecot seems to be creating empty shared-mailboxes.db in /home/vpopmail/domains/example/ (missing .com!). I'm very confused at this point, but I'm sure someone has gotten this to work and can help me out. fwiw, the output of dovecot -n is appended. thanks! - Dave.

Hi, I wanted to migrate a mailserver from cyrus to dovecot. The new setup was using postfixadmin let the domain admins configure the hostet domains. To view the used quota in postfixadmin the usage of the quota dict backend is required. I have configured it according to the wiki but everytime I connect I get a sucessfully login and then every next command hangs. It seems to me, that the dict process itself is hanging. I even startet with a fresh mail box. The only way to login with my setup is to disable quota for the used protocol. I'm new to dovecot, nice to meet you guys here. Referring to Redhat, 32bit Linux v5 GFS supports 16TB filesystem size while 64bit version supports 8 EB (1EB = 1024TB) size. [Dovecot] RFC: Different quota for dovecot and deliver

Hello everybody, I've been with this question in IRC the last days, but no solution was found. So I looked into the sources, and came up with the attached (untested, not even compiled) patch against 1.2.1. Rationale ----------- I'd like to bounce on the external side, which is quite easy if the quota is stored in a SQL database; then eg. postfix can directly query it, and reject accordingly without doing any real work. Now, as discussed some time ago on the postfix list (cannot find it anymore, sorry), it would be best to *not* bounce internally, ie. when the mail is delivered in the mailbox, but to allow a small bit of over-usage instead. Thoughts ---------- Why don't we simply set the value seen by postfix down a bit? I don't think that this is the correct solution; if the difference between these two values is smaller than the allowed mail size we'd get internal bounces again. (And we wouldn't allow to *get* the amount of mail, btw, only to use it via COPY.) There are more complicated schemes, like putting a slightly higher quota in the configuration, and subtracting a bit in postfix again. I wouldn't see that as aesthetical, too. Furthermore all such schemes have the problem of being unstable - larger mails get (internally) rejected earlier than small ones. Wanted behaviour ------------------ What I'd like to achieve is that postfix uses the trigger value from the Database as well, but that deliver allows a small bit more - say 5, 10, or 20MB. Then one incoming mail simply makes the quota go over the defined limit; now postfix no longer accepts mail, but the incoming queue (amavis etc.) can be drained - at least if there's not some big hiccup in queue processing, and that's why I'd like to use a *different* quota, and not simply *none* (for deliver). Idea to solve this -------------------- The idea is that in the SQL configuration the name of an environment variable can be given to the SELECT query; this name, and the value of the environment variable, are used as an additional WHERE constraint. It would be much nicer if a stored procedure could be called with parameters (like Postfix allows), but that would mean a fair bit of change to dovecot. (And in Postgres at least the query could be rewritten with rules - but that's not that nice, either.) I've now looked into the sources, and tried to sketch the basic change that I imagine; please see the attached patch. Would something like that be acceptable? I thought for some time whether the additional query should use the filename part of the executable; then similar things could be done. dsync in Dovecot v2.0 tree is a new utility for syncing a mailbox in two locations. Some things it can be used for: - Initially transfer a mailbox to another server via SSH - A faster sync done to an existing mailbox, sending only changes - A superfast sync based on modification sequences. - Source and destination mailboxes can use different formats (convert-tool will be history) dsync can handle all kinds of conflicts in mailboxes, handle mailbox deletions, renames, etc. So it's safe to sync even if both source and destination mailboxes have had all kinds of changes. Now, the question is: Does anyone want dsync to only sync changes from source to destination, instead of doing a full two-way sync? I think in typical cases where you'd think you would want only one-way sync are also the cases where there's no changes coming the other way in any case.

Folks - With Dovecot 1.0.7, we're seemingly unable to authenticate users for out-going SMTP access who are not residing directly within the main system passwd/shadow files. (I.e. the users seeded within our non-system "dovecot" userdbs & passwd files have no "smtp-auth" joy! (Ye olde "Relaying denied. Proper authentication required") I've mucked around with this from several different angles and clearly saslauthd is the sticking point in terms of "locking-in" on the /etc system files ONLY for smtp-auth. Our defined dovecot user/passwd files are entirely ignored. Can anyone provide a direction regarding the appropriate smtp-auth in-road? Thanks, -M Regards, M

Hello all. I have a question regarding my mail flow. We have some users who are in a mail group (alias), and these alias receives a lot of attached documents. So i have the document in all the mailboxes of the alias. If the attached document is 2MB and that is not rare, i have 10 times 2 MB on my mail server. Is there a way to tackle this. Maybe by making the alias a mailbox itself and give other users acces or are there other options. Also i have very lame and lazy users. They refuse to clean thrash cans (i asked about that earlier,and got that tackled through the expire plugin.),also the do not remove old mail not even reading it. So is there also a option to remove mail that is not been opened, and is older than xx days or weeks. Hi, We are using gmail (google apps) across our company with most users using outlook (windoze) or evolution (linux) and imap/pop based on user preference. We are having issues in that our internet links are fairly slow and when users download mails they get frustrated with the time it takes and often get timeouts and issues where outlook fails to fetch a mail yet gmail thinks it was retrieved - users then complain of "missing" emails. Is there a way that we could use dovecot (or similar?) to act as an imap "proxy" and users connect to dovecot while dovecot connects to gmail? Thanks Paul

[Dovecot] Expire plugin - where to start?

I'm running Dovecot 1.1.3 on FreeBSD 7.0 with procmail 3.22 sorting the output of Spamassassin. Just for me and a few friends. I didn't like the ageing 'standard' IMAP implementation so I thought I'd give Dovecot a try and it's really impressive. However, I'm a complete newbie to its inner workings. Spamassassin is able to find plenty to chew on so the "Probable spam" mbox (note) fills up fast. I obviously want to zap the old stuff in there automatically. It seems to me that the expire plugin is the thing I need BUT reading the documentation: http://wiki.dovecot.org/Plugins/Expire Leaves me to scared to try anything. It's all working and I don't want to break it or delete anyone's mail. The problem that the wiki isn't accurate to the version I'm running. For example /usr/libexec/dovecot/expire-tool.sh doesn't exist. Okay, this isn't Linux, and there's something likely where I'd expect it on BSD (/usr/local/...) - but it's a binary, not a shell script. It may be a direct replacement AFAIK, but it may not. I've been reading the old mailing list about problems with 1.2 and this reinforces the feeling that the wiki is out-of-sync. Am I being paranoid? Possibly, but I don't want to be posting a "Help! I've wrecked my config and deleted all my friend's mail" type message. (Okay, I'd take a backup first). So could some kind person point me at the latest documentation? Thanks, Frank.

This may be trivial but reading the documentation I can't find a clear answer: If multiple authentication mechanisms (or multiple databases for one) are defined, does it allow one user account to have several (at least two) alternative passwords (so that any of them would work)? [Dovecot] v3.0 architecture

I just had a thought. It's probably going to be too big of a change for v2.0, so something to think about for v3.0: Supporting multiple UIDs is difficult. Currently expire-tool and v2.0's LMTP server are implemented in a way that it's always running as root and only temporarily dropping privileges. So any security hole in there gives the attacker root privileges. Not very nice. With a single UID it's possible (or will be) to just use that one UID for the process without running as root. User sharing mailboxes to another user with different UID is even more difficult. Currently the only practical way to implement this is to assign read-write permissions to some group and have all mail files owned by that group. Not very nice. Sharing mailboxes between users located in different servers is impossible if the disk isn't somehow shared. All of these can be solved the same way: 1. imap, pop3, lmtp, etc. processes will be running without any privileges, very much like imap/pop3-login nowadays. Nobody-chrooted to empty directory. 2. Create storage processes that are started as needed. They can be configured in different security/performance settings: One storage process per user, one storage process per UID, setuid-root style shared storage process for multiple UIDs. 3. Mail processes talk to storage processes via some protocol. They can talk via UNIX socket or TCP/IP. If an existing connection can't handle the target UID, a new connection is made that either reuses an existing storage proces or creates a new one. 4. IMAP can finally implement truly simultaneously running queries (where it makes sense) by creating more storage processes if existing ones are busy handling longer-running commands. This also allows using the same storage process for multiple simultaneous IMAP connections and mail deliveries (and etc). The storage processes can also hang around and keep mailboxes open after all connections have closed it (dynamically figured out when it makes sense) to handle webmail clients that create lots of short-living connections or POP3 clients who poll for new mail every minute. The big problem is what the protocol should be. Use some existing RPC protocol? It should be something extensible so that a plugin in imap process can talk to a plugin in storage process, without the base processes knowing anything about the details (e.g. imap-quota plugin asking quota usage from storage's quota plugin). In any case the client side API should be asynchronous. That can make it annoyingly difficult to use though. Wonder if I could switch to erlang or something for the imap/pop3 processes :)

Hi, I?m facing here a wierd problem: We have a vacation messaging system using sieve. When activated the system forwards incomming messages to a given address and sents an out of office reply to the sender. This works like a charm when the mail is addressed to mailbox@domain. When the incomming mail ist addressed to alias.to.mailbox@domain the mail is delivered to the mailbox, it is forwarded to the given reciepient but there is no auto reply going out to the sender! Our setup: CentOS 5.2 + postfix 2.5.6 + dovecot 1.1.11 with domain and accounts stored in a mysql database. [Dovecot] Comments in sieve plugin section of dovecot-example.conf

The Wiki includes several comments about sieve_* variables which are not mentioned in dovecot-example.conf, especially sieve_{before,after} and sieve_extensions and sieve_subaddress_sep. Could these be added to the commented config file?

I am trying to implement vacation with sieve in dovecot, but each time I try to use a sieve rule that sends a mail, like vacation or reject, I obtain this error code_ sieve_execute_bytecode(/var/vmail/domain1/user/dovecot.sievec) failed Checking syslog I found this message: sieve runtime error: Reject: No return-path for reply Googling I found a report of a problem like this but I can't found a solution. Hi, I am not on this list so please CC me. Using dovecot-1.2.x it seems we can not configure the location of ssl- parameters.dat.tmp, it is hard coded to be in PKG_STATEDIR: ./src/master/master-settings.c: #define SSL_PARAMETERS_PERM_PATH PKG_STATEDIR"/"SSL_PARAMETERS_FILENAME This can lead to problems when you're running multiple instances on one machine. Apart from that, it would be very useful if wasn't hard- coded like that. Hello list, Sorry, if it has been asked, but searching throught list not give possitive answers. After upgrade to dovecot version 1.2.1 expire-tool stoped working. [Dovecot] getting Apple Mail and dovecot/IMAP to co-operate

Hi. I've been fighting a losing battle to get Apple Mail and dovecot to play nice. When dovecot is told to use mbox-style mailboxes, it's not possible to create child mailboxes. Apple Mail whines "The IMAP command “CREATE” failed with server error: Mailbox doesn't allow inferior mailboxes.". I've looked through the documentation, the wiki and searched the mail archives without finding a solution. Can anyone help? I've tried (and failed) to get a hybrid maildir/mbox setup to work like that shown on http://wiki.dovecot.org/Namespaces. When that gets plugged into dovecot.conf, Apple Mail blocks, with the Activity window saying "waiting for login" or something like that, even though a valid imaps connection and login has been established. There's nothing getting logged by dovecote for both of these problems, even when syslog is turned all the way to debug priority. [Dovecot] Possible fix to an old Thunderbird related problem

I think I might have finally fixed it. The problem was that the max_cached_connections in Thunderbird defaults to 25 and I had login process count set to 10. I think raising it to 25 ill fix it. Just posting this in case others are having this problem. What was happening was that the message counts were increasing but the messages didn't show up in the list. Or messages would appear to be empty. Restarting Dovecot or restarting Thunderbird fixes the problem temporarily. I'm hoping this annoyance will go away now.

Changelog Sieve v0.1.8: - Fixed AIX compile problem. For portability, the typeof operator is not used anymore. + Added partial support for the deprecated notify extension. However, it turns out that the implementation provided by cmusieve is even older (2001), meaning that this is currently not backwards compatible with cmusieve. Should be fixed in next release. Hi, After upgrading to 1.2 I started getting fchown errors in the log. They look like: Jul 12 18:32:54 jukebox dovecot: deliver(kim): fchown(/data/mail/kim/.lists.mythtv-users/tmp/1247416373.M857540P19162.jukebox.alleroedderne.adsl.dk, -1, 500(k im)) failed: Operation not permitted (egid=12(mail), group based on /data/mail/kim/.lists.mythtv-users) I have tried to get rid of the by changing the group of the files to "mail" but that does not help. I can not find a dovecot option that is documented to set the group to %u which would seem ideal. Any advice? Hello, I try to get per-mailbox-ACLs on dovecot. So, I've modded dovecot.conf: protocol imap { mail_plugins = acl } and plugin { acl = vfile } When I telnet to dovecot an try the command "capability" there is nothing about acl. I need acl for "open-xchange" so I can share Mailboxes over the webinterface. Hi, I downloaded the debian-src-package of dovecot 1.2.1 from xi.rename-it.nl, and built the package myself - no errors present. after the upgrade, dovecot complains about an error with imap_quota, startup fails: Restarting IMAP/POP3 mail server: dovecotEdlopen(/usr/lib/dovecot/modules/imap/lib10_quota_plugin.so) failed: /usr/lib/dovecot/modules/imap/lib10_quota_plugin.so: undefined symbol: xdr_ext_getquota_args FCouldn't load required plugins Error: imap dump-capability process returned 89 Fatal: Invalid configuration in /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf failed! I downgraded back to 1.2.0, which works normally. Any hints? Best regards, Anton

[Dovecot] problem with convert-tool: "Invalid mailbox name"

Hello everyone. I'm having a problem with convert-tool while trying to convert mbox folders to maildir. I'm running dovecot-1.1.16 on Centos 5.3 If the user has subfolders, convert-tool fails saying: "Mailbox conversion: Couldn't create mailbox sub/folder3: Invalid mailbox name" However, if I ran the convert-tool with the same arguments and same folders with dovecot 1.1.11 on Ubuntu 9.04 it works fine. Hi folks, when I run expire-tool, I often see messages like the following: # dovecot --exec-mail ext /usr/libexec/dovecot/expire-tool Info: user/Trash: stop, expire time in future: Fri May 22 17:42:23 2009 the server's dovecot.conf contains the following line: expire = Trash 2 Junk 7 */News 30 */Reports 7 >From what I observe, an error of "expire time in future" in one of the Trash folders stops expire-tool alltogether, meaning that remaining folders like News or Reports don't get processed at all? Is this interpretation correct? If so, can I convince expire-tool to skip errors and continue processing other folders? -R

Description of problem: Hello, I am having problems with Dovecot not delivering 'big' emails. Small email with 1-2 kb text delivered fine. If the message about 200kb long or more it freezes. I am also getting "copy: i_stream_read() failed: Permission denied" erros in Dovecot log files. I have tried switching off selinux and settings 777 permissions to my mail_location - it both dont help. Hi, We are using dovecot with "mail_plugins = cmusieve". I have Avelsieve in SquirrelMail for users to interact with it. Is there any way I can allow users to run their sieve script on an entire mailbox? While the normal case of having messages filtered as they are delivered to the Maildir makes sense it would be useful for a few users to be able to apply their rules to every message on a one-off basis. If there is a binary which will do this job? I could adapt the SquirrelMail interface to invoke it with appropriate arguments. Thanks, Ian

Login via pop works fine, also sending via smtp works fine. HOWEVER: when i sent a mail by hand via smtp it is delivered in the wrong directory. I' ve got dovecot set up as LDA, and currently I'm using the dict-mysql method described for 1.2.0, but it's not really working at all. Am I correct in assuming that with this method I can define the quota limit in my dict (sql field)? This is my current config: dict { quotadict = mysql:/etc/dovecot-dict-sql.conf } plugin { quota = dict:user::proxy::quotadict quota_rule = *:storage=0:messages=0 } protocol lda { mail_plugins = quota ..... } I want quota to be disabled unless otherwise specified in my SQL database. // Tom

[Dovecot] Managesieve fails to retrieve scripts > 8kB on Dovecot 1.1.16

After some help with debugging tips on #dovecot, I have established that a sieve script on Dovecot 1.1.16 has to be less than 8kB in order to be retrieved by a managesieve client. I have been using managesieve for about 6 months over as many 1.1.n versions of dovecot as have been around during that time and hit this problem when I upgraded to Dovecot 1.1.16. I have gone back to Dovecot 1.1.15 and can once again manage my 9kB sieve script remotely. Symptoms were that managesieve login was OK but instead of displaying my sieve script, the script editing window was empty. After 30 seconds the client gave me a timeout message. If I entered a small script in the empty client edit window and saved it, the new, small script was saved to the server and became active. I could then successfully retrieve and edit that small script. I tried hacking a few lines at a time out of my 9kB script (locally on the server). When it was down to 8.4KB I still couldn't get it through managesieve. The next hack took it down to 7.7kB and I could get that through managesieve. So, I'm guessing there's a magic 8192 number in there somewhere - perhaps a buffer? 1) I see that the --without-pop3d option has gone away. What does this imply, i.e why was that done? Is there some other way that you now avoid compiling the POP code? Are there any other discontinued options? 2) There was some talk a while back about changing how and where the plugins were to be built and their code located. Was this implemented? [Dovecot] Long delay checking mail with POP w/plain auth

I just switched from UW-IMAP to dovecot, and it all went smooth, except now I get a 4-5 second delay after connecting to the POP3 server (IMAP is fine). If I switch to auth "mechanisms=login", it is instantaneous - the delay is gone. I need some help here... ;-) I'm experimenting with global ACLs, but just fail to understand very basic behaviors. So, before digging into the source code, I would really be delighted if someone could immediately point a mistake I'm making and miserably overlooking. [Dovecot] Problem with sieve and german umlauts

Dear list, I?m running a postfix (2.5.6) / Dovecot (1.1.11) on a Centos 5.2 box. I?ve written a small gui application to simply create Out of Office replys with sieve. The resulting code did work with maildrop without any problems. Now sieve fails when it meets any german umlauts like ä or ü. It just stops compiling the scripts and complains about the missing "};". A simple fix is to just replace the umlauts, but that doesn?t meet the expectations of my users. Is there any escape code I could use or any way to place the mail text outside the script? Hi, I've got a problem with Dovecot 1.2rc7 and a Sieve script which should store eMails in a subfolder. When setting a CONTROL directory that does not exists (has to be created by dovecot upon first login) AND INDEX=MEMORY Dovecot POP3 will fail upon first login with 'Couldn't init INBOX: Internal error occurred. [Dovecot] readdir and rename don't mix; patch included

Enclosed please find a patch to dovecot-1.1.16 that fixes a common problem we see under load on Mac OS X and HFS+. The symptom is that sometimes readdir() returns EINVAL. The problem is that readdir() and rename() don't mix well, and maildir_scan_dir() renames messages from new/ to cur/. The solution I chose is just to retry scanning the directory, since code to rescan is already present. An alternative solution would be to read the entire directory first, then process the contents; that is, to do all the readdirs before any renames. The patch is like Apple's previous ones, all tagged with /*APPLE*/ and formatted to simplify our merges. Please reformat it as you desire. Attached is a patch which in my environment (Linux/Heimdal 1.2.1) fixes cross-realm GSSAPI authentication. Changes it makes: 1. When using krb5_kuserok, do not call gss_compare_name to check that authn_name and authz_name are the same. Instead, make TWO calls to krb5_kuserok, one for each ID. If both IDs are acceptable, allow the login. 2. Disable checking that the name is a GSS_KRB5_PRINCIPAL_NAME, as this doesn't appear to be always the case for the authz_name. If I create a .k5login listing both username@REALM1 and username@REALM2, and make that file follow the appropriate security restrictions (world read, user only write permissions), this lets me use GSSAPI logins with principals from either REALM1 or REALM2. This leaves untouched the behavior in the case where krb5_kuserok is not available. Bryan Jacobs

Hello, I have this user that lost an email, even when the server is set up to do lazy expunge. [Dovecot] rquota RPC with netapp filer

Hello list, with dovecot 1.2 on AIX rquota RPC calls fail with quota-fs: remote ext rquota call failed: RPC: 1832-012 Program/version mismatch when using a netapp filer. This is what netapp says: Bug ID 97288 Title Support requested for rquota version 2 Bug Severity 5 - Suggestion Bug Status Closed Product Data ONTAP Bug Type NFS Description Linux has implemented its own extensions to the rquota protocol as a version 2 of that protocol. ONTAP only supports v1 as that is the only version defined by Sun, the owner of that RPC program number. Workaround - Fixed-In This bug is not scheduled to be fixed, you may opt to Version open a technical support case if you would like to contact Network Appliance regarding the status of this bug. A complete list of releases where this bug is fixed is available here. So this should be no AIX specific problem. Using the attached rquota.x fixes the problem. In addition you have to disable group quota checking by adding "user" to your "quota" definition. After some debugging it turned out that the problem was introduced somewhere between 1.2rc3 and 1.2rc7 (1.2.0 is still affected). [Dovecot] troubles with broken clients (iPhone) - again

The PC (Outlook) is accessing the mailbox via POP3, the iPhone is using IMAP; please consider we are talking about a user's home setup, so it's pretty difficult to have a more detailed report on his part (Outlook version, iPhone OS version, xDSL router type and configuration, etc.). The mail server 'dovecot -n' output is attached. The symptoms: when the Mail application is "closed" on the iPhone, Outlook still says the mailbox is in use; a Dovecot imap process is still active for that user even after a few minutes (manually killing it releases the lock, thereby leaving the inbox available for Outlook). >From the client side, there is a seemingly relevant article at http://blogs.sun.com/chienr/entry/iphone_supports_imap_idle it describes, among others, the "Settings / Mail / Auto-Check" and "Settings / General / Auto-Lock" parameters; from my point of view, however, being able to solve the problem directly on the server would be far better, and might also accomodate other broken clients we haven't seen yet: that's why I asked you whether there is a way to tell Dovecot only one POP3 or IMAP process from the same user, the latest one, can be active at the same time, closing and disconnecting all the others. Set permissions on the mail folder to 2775 because dovecot runs as its own user and group and you need the mail file in that folder to accept writes from mail and from dovecot groups. Also in the config file dovecot.conf you need to specify if the files are maildir or mbox. They are probably mbox but try both for the error messages.

Hello Dovecot users, I hereby release new versions of the Sieve packages for the recently released Dovecot v1.2.0 (Congrats Timo!). Apart from small changes to make things compile with Dovecot again, a few other bugs were fixed as well. Unfortunately, the (FreeBSD-specific) 8kb script truncation bug remains. Although it is reported for Dovecot v1.1.16, I see no reason why it should not surface in v1.2.0 as well. Any help is appreciated. I'm thinking of upgrading my dovecot version to 1.2 so that I can use the Dovecot sieve plugin instead of the CMU Sieve plugin. My RPM repo for dovecot is ATrpms so I could get dovecot-1.2.0-0_95.el5.i386.rpm from the bleeding ATrpms repo. Would this be compatible with dovecot-sieve-1.1.6-9.el5.i386.rpm which is in the stable repo, or would I need to find a later dovecot-sieve version somewhere? Regards, Phill

System: Debian Testing, Postfix, Dovecot 1.2.0 (1.2.0-0~auto+7_i386.deb), Squirrelmail + Avelsieve Postfix delivers fine in my INBOX via mailbox_command = /usr/lib/dovecot/deliver in main.cf. deliver seems not to use the existing sieve-script created and uploadet with avelsieve. Hi All, I've got a brand new dovecot installation. I'm new to dovecot, so please be gentle :-) Anyway, I'm getting some errors when I try to connect to dovecot. I've tried searching the web and haven't been able to find a lot of information. Tried to copy the file so I could freely experiment with it but the copying hung up when it reached 87 % (the file is 1.1 GB). The copied part was unreadable. Tried to formail -ds < /var/mail/username >> /backup/usernameJul3 but with the same result. Is there a way to repair the synchronization of the mbox? Or at least a way to recover its content? ------------------------------------------------------- After that I also tried to "shutdown -F -r now" but to no effect. I have: mail_location = maildir:/var/dovecot-mail/%d/%n/Maildir but on my /var/dovecot-mail have following directory created: -domain -domain. -domain.es (only this is correct) -DOMAIN.ES Why is this happening?
