When I try to connect to my mail server I get this message. "Could not connect to mail server chen.home.org; connection was refused" The last message in /var/log/mail.err is:- Aug 13 21:02:27 chen dovecot: Fatal: Time just moved backwards by 3603 seconds. This might cause a lot of problems, so I'll just kill myself now. http://wiki.dovecot.org/TimeMovedBackwards It seems this is my own fault. Time on my system is a little wonky so I reset the time and then I found out I'd broken Dovecot. I didn't realise that doing this would have an impact on dovecot. I read the web page and to be honest I'm not confident about hacking source code. I've reinstalled dovecot which worked except it hasn't solved my time travel problem. By the way since my first install of dovecot the config file seems to have changed a little but since I've tried to migrate my settings over the new file and been met with the same problem I don't think it's that. Is it possible to get dovecot working again? -- Regards Stephen.

I'm seeing strings of failed POP3 login attempts with obvious bogus usernames coming from different IP addresses. Today's originated from 216.31.146.19 (which resolves to neovisionlabs.com) This looks like a botnet attack. I got a similar probe a couple days ago. Is anyone else seeing these? The attack involves trying about 20 different names, about 3-4 seconds apart. [Dovecot] IMAP maildir performance difference between dovecot-uidlist versions?

Hi, Is there an IMAP performance difference using Maildir between using version 3 and version 1 of the dovecot-uidlist (either dovecot 1.0.7 or 1.1.2)? It isn't entirely clear to me there is any difference as the filename may contain the size/vsize information. The servers will eventually be running 1.1.2 with the maildir_copy_preserve_filename turned on. I'm doing a batch migration from courier to dovecot 1.0.7 and eventually dovecot 1.1.2. These servers are, and will continue to be, IMAP only (i.e. dedicated control/dovecot-uidlist files). The migration script is run once - no build on the fly. It does a readdir() to get the full filenames and make sure that list entries are only for existing files. As a result, there is almost complete freedom in the output format for the dovecot-uidlist. [Dovecot] PAM session closes too soon

Hi. I'm trying to keep most of my data encrypted when possible, only keeping the decryption key in memory (and thus vulnerable to local attacks) when I'm actually using my data. In practice, this means using pam_mount to mount my home directory from an encrypted device. It almost looked like I could get this to work with mail as well, even when read via IMAP from a remote client: I placed my mail in the encrypted home directory, added pam_mount to /etc/pam.d/dovecot, and set session=yes in Dovecot's PAM configuration. Except that it didn't, quite: pam_mount worked just fine and mounted the encrypted disk using the IMAP password... and then immediately unmounted it, since for some reason session=yes means that Dovecot closes the session _immediately_ after opening it. This seems just silly. If a PAM session is to be used, then it seems obvious to me that its length should be exactly the length of the IMAP session. I can't see any reason for the current behavior, except maybe that it was a bit simpler to code and is sufficient for pam_mkhomedir (and only that). Can this be fixed with reasonable effort? Also, for pam_mount to work correctly, there must not be any file descriptors open in the mounted file system when the session closes, as otherwise unmounting is impossible. Will dovecot release all fds into the mail and index files when the session ends, or can it be made to do so? (UTSL is an acceptable answer.) Thanks in advance. Lauri Alanko la(a)iki.fi

Just installed dovecot 1.1.2. downloaded from dovecot.org. Seemed to compile and install OK but I get the following error when I try to start it "child 28410 (auth) returned error 89 (fatal failure)" I just want to use it for SMTP/SASL authorization, not Pop3 or IMAP, as yet It looks as though I haven't installed some component or other but what? Hello! I'm running squirrelmail 1.4.8 (I know this is not the latest version) and know I'm having troubles with: 1.) Folder list view 2.) Save to sent or Drafts folder. Configuration worked well. I think it has to do with the upgrade from dovecot 1.0 to 1.1 and the LIST command. Thunderbird/alpine work well. Commands from rawlog are: A002 LIST "" "~/Mail/Drafts" A002 OK List completed. or A002 LIST "" "~/Mail/sent" A003 CREATE "~/Mail/sent" A002 OK List completed. A003 NO Mailbox exists. [Dovecot] Migrating mbox to maildir

Sorry to bother everyone but I was wondering if it is possible for Dovecot to handle mbox AND maildir at the same time? Example: I want to convert from UW Imap using mbox to Dovecot using maildir. Do I need to convert ALL my users mbox mailboxes to maildir right away or can I convert them one at a time? I'd like to use maildir with all my new users, but I'd like to be able to continue using mbox for my old users and slowly convert them as I get time. Is this possible? I know Dovecot supports both formats, I just couldn't find anything in the install notes about using both at the same time. Thank you, mike

[Dovecot] Webmail app ... again.

There was a thread several weeks (or months) ago on webmail applications. I didn't like any of the options and only found few that I did but they were either expensive or not maintained. So ... I raised the question on the Catalyst Framework list about Perl based webmail apps and got nothing usable. It came down to what would it take to build a Perl (Cat) webmail app. Several others on the list got interested so we decided to build it. The main issue I run into is my lack of understanding of the ins-and-outs of the IMAP specification and the features that come with using Dovecot. (Oh yeah. Dovecot was the preferred IMAP server!) Another project I'm working on uses IMAP and what I found was there is a great quantity of Perl modules for dealing with IMAP. A great quantity! Unfortunately many of them assume a deeper knowledge of IMAP than I have so are very confusing. What I'm looking for is a good reference, besides the RFC, on IMAP. Anything out there? Electronic or dead-tree is fine. (A book of Dovecot would be neat too.) TIA, Rod --

Hello all, Today I had problems on one of the servers. Dovecot stopped working and I got lots of "Request queue is full" on logs. [Dovecot] restricting shared folders access

Hi all, I have a dovecot setup with virtual users and a passwd-file passdb. All users have the same uid and gid. Recently I got my public folders working using namespaces and they work great. However, now I'm trying to share a folder between a limited number of users and so far I failed to get it working. Symlinks aren't an option because users need to be able to create subfolders of the shared folder so I'm trying to do it with namespaces but I'm not sure how to restrict access to a limited number of users. I tried doing it with groups. I made sure that the shared folder's group is set to 'staff' and the mode is 070, I also changed the group of a few virtual users to 'staff'. However, when I try accessing the shared folder I get a permission denied error (although the user is in the staff group). Can someone please recommend the best way to do this? Should I look into ACL's? Many thanks, Andrew.

[Dovecot] Plugin when downloading mail

Is there a way to modify mail messages when they are downloaded using a special login. eg. my normal login for dovecot is martijn(a)youngguns.nl but when I log in using martijn(a)dosomething.youngguns.nl I would like to download my mail which are processed using a Perl script. The Perl script will modify the content of the message (the message body). So I don't want to change the header or IMAP flags. Martijn

I see these errors more often than I'd like from Dovecot-1.1.2 on Mac OS X 10.5.4 (names and numbers elided): Corrupted index cache file %s: Corrupted virtual size for uid=%d: %d ! = %d Corrupted index cache file %s: Broken virtual size for mail UID %d Corrupted index cache file %s: used_file_size too large How bad are these? What should I look for to find out why they happen? Other details: File system is HFS+ Mail store is maildir Hardware is Intel (Mac Pro) Thanks.

I have it doing NTLM authentication via the dovecot winbind module with Samba 3.2 just fine, but I have yet to see it try to use the cached windows logon credentials.. It appears to do an NTLM exchange with a blank password and then prompt for a password and then do an exchange with the given password. It does the same thing if PLAIN authentication is used. I'm starting to suspect MS deliberately hobbled outlook so that it uses the SSPI to exchange an entered password but not ever the logon credentials.. Does anyone know different? What a topsy-turvy world when thunderbird using SSPI works better on Windows than outlook. :| Thanks, Jason

I'm converting my system from mbox to Maildir one user at a time, and I'd like to disable access for the user I'm working on. Is there a way to tell Dovecot to lock out a specific user? Perhaps with a control file in the home directory? At the same time, how can I get sendmail+procmail to tempfail incoming messages for one user until I'm done?

I'm talking about mbox Sent folder, where some mailers append through imap server a copy of each message they send. Sometimes, just three header lines got appended instead of the whole mail message, such as: >From xxxxxxxx(a)xxxxxx.xxxxxx.xxxxx.xx.xx Fri May 23 12:30:14 2008 X-UID: 2852 Status: RO This happened in the past (dovecot-1.1-beta/rc with Evolution and with Thunderbird), and happened last week with dovecot-1.1-rc5 (+ last week hg patches). Hi, since upgrading to 1.1.x i still have this bugs "Next message unexpectedly lost " I read this Maillist some months ago and i believe that im not the only one... The Panics and crashes in 1.1.1 are gone by upgrading to 1.1.2 but these "Next message unexpectedly lost " bugs are really annoying if users can't download complete mails. is there something new to this issue. all recommend changes did not help. The only thing i could do is downgrade to 1.0.15 and all works fine. i can not keep the 1.1.x versions in my repo untill this case is solved. :( Thanks Andre

[Dovecot] [PATCH] Support GSS-SPNEGO natively

I cooked this up while trying to figure out why thunderbird on Windows w/ SSPI was not working, but it turned out thunderbird does not use it, so I haven't been able to test it yet. I'm presenting it for discussion only, unless someone else can try it :) Modern versions of MIT kerberos support GSS-SPNEGO natively, but are only willing to negotiate for kerberos tickets and not NTLM messages. This is how the SPNEGO works in libapache-mod-auth-kerb-5.3 which simply passes SPNEGO packets directly to gssapi if the library is new enough. There is even a configure feature test for the gssapi library in that packages configure script. Note that Debian etch's standard kerb libaries (1.4) are not good enough for this. Having this work means the other gssapi policy knobs in dovecot, like auth_gssapi_hostname, work properly. Instead of 'whatever it is that samba does'. I guess it fixes the concerns about winbind accesses blocking (although don't the gssapi calls block??) In light of this it is really only useful to use winbind if you want to support NTLM as kerberos will do the necessary exchanges with the kdc for an Active Directory domain. [Dovecot] [PATCH] Allow GSSAPI to work with multihomed hosts

I saw some past chatter on this in the list archives, but here is another stab and another rational. This patch follows a similar patch to openssh in that it allows any key in the specified keytab to match the incoming host key. This is necessary for multihomed hosts. See: https://bugzilla.mindrot.org/show_bug.cgi?id=928 IMAP/POP seem to be a strong candidate to be multihomed because they are very likely to have an internal to a firewall and external to a firewall name. Due to the way MIT kerberos handles host name resolution via reverse IP lookup this can often result in multiple principle names and there is simply nothing to be done about it. This is my situation.. When you add windows into the mix, which uses a totally different set of rules to determine the principle all hope seems to be lost to have a single service principle name for an imap server :( I was able to make things work for my environment using only the auth_gssapi_hostname feature if only MIT kerberos was used, but as soon as windows SSPI was involved it choose a different hostname. Thus we want to have GSSAPI to match any service principle in the keytab. As far as security concerns go, the admin can configure the keytab for dovecot to be seperate from the system key tab and contain only valid imap SPNs, but in truth it probably doesn't matter. However I prefer to put sieve scripts to /var/lib/sieve and when I added additional field to lookup with this location it started to work. But it sends vacation messages with null envelope sender, which is in my opinion undesirable, because many vacation messages are caught in spam filters. I think there could be same sender on envelope. In dovecot-sieve/src/sieve-cmu.c around line 380 is a call to smtp_client_open(src->addr, NULL, &f); NULL could be replaced with src->fromaddr Maybe some more patching may be necesary. Hi, All parts of dovecot except deliver uses the result of hostpid_init() in src/lib/hostpid.c as a hostname which only asks gethostname(). deliver honours environment variable HOSTNAME in src/deliver/deliver.c: getenv("HOSTNAME"); and uses the hostname of hostpid_init() as a fallback. Wouldn't it be consequent to evaluate the environment variable HOSTNAME in hostpid_init() with fallback to gethostname() and remove the special behavior from deliver? The dovecot master process should export $HOSTNAME to all childs in this case. Motivation: Dovecot uses the hostname as part of Maildir file names and gethostname() is not fully qualified on all operating systems (it is on IRIX but not on Linux). But unqualified hostnames are not unique and it is frequent that dovecot hosts are named "mail" oder "imap" as hostname. To distinguish between mail.domain1.com and mail.domain2.net would be easier if dovecot evaluate $HOSTNAME in all case not just deliver as program imap can create Maildir files as well. Hi, LOG_NDELAY is the only option for openlog() in dovecot 1.1.2. Wouldn't be LOG_NDELAY|LOG_PID as option parameter much more useful? Without logging the pid, it is impossible to match 'Disconnected' log entries and the corresponding session start/login. Therefore I suggest to use LOG_NDELAY|LOG_PID in the options of i_set_failure_syslog() at all 6 occurrences which passes it to openlog(). I know that it is possible to - use logging to file - patch it myself but I can't see good reasons in not using LOG_PID here. As far as I know, most other programs specify LOG_PID. [Dovecot] IMAP inbox: cannot delete tagged messages or change their tag

Hello, a bit of a problem with Dovecot. Version is 1.0.15 and is a default install (no changes to config) from FC8 repository... except that Dovecot is configured to use Maildir I have a user on the system who uses the tags in Thunderbird (Important, Personal etc). When she tags the messages they cannot be deleted and their tags cannot be changed. When deleting a message from the IMAP inbox it momentarily disappears and moves a copy to the Trash but when the IMAP inbox is reloaded the message reappears. The same happens when I try to change a tag: it comes back with the previous tag. Untagged messages can be freely deleted. Also, this problem does not happen if the messages are in a IMAP folder. They can be freely deleted. The problem seems specific to Dovecot, not Thunderbird, as I am able to tag and delete messages in another IMAP account. Also, accessing the same IMAP account using OS X Mail the messages come back after deleting them. Where should I start looking for a solution to this problem?

[Dovecot] Trying to Hide Namespace - new configuration options?

Using 1.1.2 We have: # default namespace namespace private { separator = / prefix = inbox = yes #location = maildir:/home/virtual/%h #Maildir } # for backwards compatibility: namespace private { separator = / prefix = mail/ location = maildir:%h/Maildir/ #Maildir hidden = yes list = no } The 'hidden=yes' seemed to do nothing but saw earlier in this list a reply to add 'list=no'. This has worked to hide all folder but we still have /mail/Trash showing and it refuses to go away even after unsubscribing. mail/Trash appears when I set my email client to use folder prefix "mail/". If i set the prefix to blank I only see my Inbox and Deleted folders. Interestingly it shows 'Deleted' not 'Trash'. I guess Thunderbird renames 'Trash'. What other configs are there to try? Is there a list of config changes for 1.1.x anywhere? We were not aware of the list=no config. Thanks, Daniel

[Dovecot] problems with sieve and lda

Okay, after reading the wiki and list archives, I am confused. I am attemping to get the deliver LDA working on a centos 5.1 system # rpm -qa | grep dovecot dovecot-1.0.7-2.el5 dovecot-sieve-1.0.2-6.el5 # rpm -qa | grep postfix postfix-2.3.3-2 so that I can use Sieve for mail filtering to imap folders, I am using the mbox format Following the wiki here for system users http://wiki.dovecot.org/LDA/Postfix I never get any info in the logs about cmusieve, the only way I see anything show up is if I add the transport settings to postfix/master.cf or see below >From reading the list archives, as best as I can tell, the only time I need to make the changes in postfix's master.cf is if I am using a virtual environment, otherwise for local delivery, all I need is the mailbox_command setting in postfix/main.cf However with that setting, I get nothing! [Dovecot] Dovecot,nfs or memory indexing

Hi, I wonder if it's normal behaviour that indexes created in memory have long creation time. Other problem is that indexes created on nfs sometimes get crushed and I need to delete indexes in case of fetching mails ( I see mails on hd but when telnet on host and make stat I don't see any). Does version 1.1.x correct this errors ? And what is better to use : nfs or memory indexing ? Can someone point me adventages and disadventages of using both solutions? Best regards, Sebastian

Hello list: I am try to run quota plugin but only works a part. The users are virtual and his homedir and mbox are in NFS server, INDEX files are in local disk. Quota only is applied to global home, if I configure a low global quota and sent an mail to my e-mail, quota works fine, mail is temporally deferred. But, if I configure a high global quota and a small quota for INBOX, sent a mail that is more big that quota for INBOX, then quota is not applied and the mail is delivered to INBOX. [Dovecot] Server-side sieve for client-side copies

I know I could test this - but I'd rather ask first. To my knowledge, we haven't come up with a good server-side implementation for savings copies of sent messages (by all means correct my ignorance in this regard). So the typical way is to enable it in clients like Thunderbird (this prompted a whole discussion of how to save these messages without sending them to the server multiple times). My understanding is that sending a message from a client (use Thunderbird for simplicity of this conversation) is performed via SMTP. Saving a copy into a sent folder is performed via IMAP (hence the multiple transfers to the server). Now that I've laid a background - let's make it Dovecot specific. I don't know how "behind-the-scenes" Dovecot performs the act of saving mail messages that it receives from IMAP, instead of SMTP. Specifically, if I'm using sieve filters via deliver - can I setup a filter that will place mail copies to specific recipients into specific subfolders? -- Daniel

This may be a silly question but how to correctly stop dovecot and be sure that it's possible to start it again? kill -TERM `cat /var/run/dovecot/master.pid` doesn't work well. Hi: We're using dovecot with qmail and vpopmail and are having problems with major inaccuracies in the mail quota usage maintained in the maildirsize file. Although the file starts off accurate after we delete it and force a rebuild it quickly becomes inaccurate. It doesn't seem to be catching new mail added to the directories. Recently my network was scanned. Various services was scanned, and checking the logs of mail server the following string draw my attention: mail dovecot: pop3-login: Disconnected: user=<ttejmgpfip>, method=PLAIN, rip=87.228.15.180, lip=x.x.x.x This looks weird to me, because pop3-login: Disconnected looks like succesful login attempt to me. I have no such user named ttejmgpfip exits ofc. I've check what dovecot writes to log if try PLAIN login method with random login/password, and it's "Aborted login". As I'm using SQL backend for user/pass database, I'm afraid that I might have something misconfigured and a possible sql-injection or something else allowed attacker to "login" with random password. Or my worries are groundless and I can get such message in some case of unsuccessful login? Running dovecot 1.0.rc15 (CentOS 5). I've seen a number of posts discussing NFS based storage and issues with Dovecot. When the term "NFS" is used - does this exclusively refer to the Linux NFS network file system, or is it a generic reference to any network file system? I don't recall seeing any posts referencing issues with CIFS or SMBFS - is this because no one is using it, or because it just works instead of fiddling with NFS? -- Daniel

Hi guys, I have what I'm sure is a stupid question. I'm trying to install Dovecot 1.1.2 from source and my command sequence is this: cd dovecot-1.1.2 ./configure --prefix=/usr --exec-prefix=/usr --with-mysql --with-storagesmaildir --sysconfdir=/etc/dovecot make make install cd ../dovecot-sieve-1.1.5 ./configure --with-dovecot=../dovecot-1.1.2 make make install I don't get any errors during either install I've done the odd config on dovecot to try and keep it as close to the install dirs used by the Dovecot package included with Ubuntu. Once it's done, dovecot -n still looks in /usr/local/etc and when I try and start dovecot it looks for the libexec dir in /usr/local instead of /usr. Is there something I'm missing on the configure? I've very, very little experience (rather obviously) installing directly from source so any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Guy -- Don't just do something...sit there!

I enabled the following options (I don't have posix-locks translators): lock_method = dotlock dotlock_use_excl = no mmap_disable = yes mail_nfs_index = yes mail_nfs_storage = yes I receive the following error message. Hi, Using dovecot 1.1.2 on a dual-stack server, with the 'proxy_maybe' attribute to forward some clients to another server, it seems that only clients connecting with the same protocol version as the one used by address in the 'host' attribute in the password db are recognized as local. If an IPv4 address is specified as 'host', a dovecot proxy is created for clients connecting using IPv6 to this server, and symmetrically if the proxy is specified as an IPv6 address, clients connecting through IPv4 will get forwarded to the v6 address. Hello, I'm setting up (at least I try) to set up network services with single sign on. I could build and configure dovecat to use samba's ntlm_auth helper to achieve ntlm authentication of imap users. The point is, I wanted to restrict which users could actually authenticate through ntlm. The ntlm_auth helper has this ability with the --require-membership-of=... command line parameter. I first tried (unsuccessfully) to add this parameter to the auth_winbind_helper_path token in dovecot.conf, and figured out by checking the source that this was not possible. I then decided to patch the source so that one can pass any argument to the ntlm_auth helper by specifying at new line in dovecot.conf with the token "auth_winbind_helper_args" (for instance, what I wanted to do is "auth_winbind_helper_args = --require-membership-of=... ") Well, here comes the patch. It is to be used with recent 1.1.2 release. Best regards François

I'd like to see tcp-wrappers.patch getting integrated into dovecot. I ported the original 1.0 patch to 1.1, but would prefer not to have to maintain another local patch. As the name suggests, the patch adds libwrap support to dovecot. We use is to limit access from outside our network to secure (imaps/pop3s) protocols only and to exclude certain internal addresses from accessing dovecot in general. I fully understand Timo's concern of people not reading documentation and then whining that librwapping doesn't work whereas they simply forgot to put hosts.{allow,deny} into the login chroot. Would it be acceptable if either dovecot itself or the init script copies /etc/hosts.{allow,deny} into the chroot (unless it's already there)? Also, dovecot could probably complain/abort/turn off libwrap if these files are missing in the login chroot. The problem mainly occurs with the default (Linux) setting of login_dir = /var/run/dovecot/login; on NetBSD, I use /var/chroot/dovecot-login instead, which doesn't get wiped out at boot. Comments? Suggestions? Oh, yes, managesieve (which uses src/login-common) would need a slight update, too.

He used IMAP to access his INBOX, but he forgot to configure this for all other folders as well. Now, Pine modified /home/user1/Mail/Trash directly, and when Dovecot stumbled upon this file it killed itself with signal 6. The problem is not reproducible. After this single failure, Dovecot doesn't seem to have any problems with the folder. Different user, different mail client. INBOX with 350 messages in total, 3 of them new. Started Thunderbird, index page is displayed fine, then clicked on one of the 3 new messages to read it. For no apparent reason, Dovecot dies with signal 6. Thunderbird reconnected automatically, and then Dovecot dies again. Nice endless loop ... Stopping and restarting the complete Dovecot subsystem with the help of the init.d script didn't help. Finally the crashes stopped after removing the cache files in /home/fubar/Mail/.imap/INBOX. It's obvious that the cache files got corrupted somehow. There was plenty of disk space free. And the cache files have been freshly created from scratch with Dovecot 1.1.0. Other folders were not affected. Except Dovecot, nobody ever touches these cache files. Well, the good news is, it stopped crashing after removing the cache files. The bad news is, without the cache files (which I removed) the problem cannot be reproduced. So, there's nothing more to offer than these two backtraces. Both crashes are not related to each other and happened to different users with different clients. Maybe the backtraces and my descriptions help to find what's going wrong or how to make Dovecot behave more robustly. If there's any additional information needed, please let me know. I am trying to setup Dovecot to use the expire plugin and wanted to use the LDA so I can ensure the messages are indexed as they are delivered to the mailboxes. [Dovecot] virtual domains and SSL certificates

Hi all, I have dovecot 1.1.0 setup to access vpopmail accounts for several virtual domains. Dovecot IMAP is accessed through several virtual domains as well, ie mail.foo.com an d mail.bar.com The problem is that the configuration file specifies only one certificate file for dovecot, which means only one Common Name, which means one cannot provide one server cert that will match mail.foo.com AND mail.bar.com, and either mary(a)foo.com or bob(a)bar.com will get a "Security Error: Domain Name Mismatch" in their mail client when connecting through IMAPS. Update: dovecot can't find the mail directory because of mail_location = maildir:/var/vpopmail/domains/%d/%n/Maildir and dovecot doesn't know anything about domain aliases. ln -s ~vpopmail/domains/maindomain ~vpopmail/domains/aliasdomain fixes the problem for dovecot. -K

With 1.0 I had the quota plugin set to allow some accounts to have no quota by setting their size (in bytes) to 0 (via mysql). Following the upgrade to 1.1 this no longer seems to work and has resulted in a lot of annoyed people having messages bumped :-( The config I have is as follows... quota = maildir quota_rule = *:storage=15M quota_rule2 = Trash:ignore quota_rule3 = INBOX.Trash:ignore quota_rule4 = INBOX.SpamTrain:ignore quota_rule5 = SpamTrain:ignore In the sql.conf I get the quota for each mailbox using this line user_query = SELECT '/var/vmail/%d/%n' as home, 'maildir:/var/vmail/%d/%n' as mail, xxx AS uid, xxx AS gid, concat('maildir:storage=', mb_quota) AS quota FROM mailboxes WHERE mb_mbname = '%u' AND mb_active = '1' With this setup when I have a mb_quota set to 0 it simply bounces all messages for the mailboxes that should have no quota. Hi, This small mail to share my observation about a recent move of mailboxes between two servers and ask about explanation and/or improvement about UIDL in dovecot. SV1 : Dovecot 0.99.14 / Red Hat Fedore Core 4 SV2 : Dovecot 1.07 / CentOS 5.2 Mailboxes in /var/spool/mail on the twoo servers. Test will be done with outlook express with option "leave message on server" checked. Goal is simply to move users mailboxes from SV1 to SV2 without re-downloading all messages. Try 1: - Stop dovecot on SV2 - Clear all dovecot indexes on SV2 - Rsync of my mailbox - Start dovecot on SV2 - Update pop setting in outlook and send/receive Result : => starting to download 3000 mails... After some debug, I discovered that UIDL where not of the same format => put pop3_uidl_format = %v.%u in dovecot.conf of SV2. Try 2: Same operations as Try1 Result : => starting to download 3000 mails... UIDL's where of the same format but values where not corresponding... Teleting on SV1 and asking UIDL, last value is xxxxxxxxxx.85878. On SV2, xxxxxxxxxx.85879 was the FIRST value of the list. Conclusion for the moment, Dovecot has a problem with the detection of existing UID of the moved mailbox. Comparaison of first header found from the two mailboxes show ... differences ! SV1 give the following : (...) X-UID: 70570 Content-Length: 1561 X-IMAPbase: xxxxxxxxxx 85845 $MDNSent X-Keywords: (...) SV2 give the following (after first POP attempt) : (...) Content-Length: 1561 X-IMAPbase: xxxxxxxxxx 0000089204 $MDNSent X-Keywords: X-UID: 85846 (...) Observation : X-UID: 85846 is not at the same place in the header. Try 3: - Stop dovecot on SV2 - Clear all dovecot indexes on SV2 - Rsync of my mailbox - Edit mailbox and move X-UID header after the X-Keywords header - Start dovecot on SV2 - Update pop setting in outlook and send/receive Result : => OK. The webmail accesses the inbox by imap and reuses the password for smtp through postfix. I configured dovecot sasl authentication to allow a particular global password to be allowed from one IP address of the webmail server. I've got a user with an unusable account. Tbird just sits in a loop endlessly logging in over and over when a particular folder is selected. What files under .imap associated with that folder can be safely deleted? What's stored in all of them? I see all of these: .customflags dovecot.index dovecot.index.cache dovecot.index.log .imap.index .imap.index.data .imap.index.log .imap.index.tree

Using 1.1.2. I'm getting the above message over and over in the error log. Dovecot drops the connection and the client (Tbird) just keeps retrying in an endless loop. Using Wireshark to sniff the exchange, it looks like the command that fails looks like this: 5 UID fetch 1:9749,9751:9763,9765:9930,9932,9934:9942 (UID RFC822.SIZE FLAGS BODY.PEEK[HEADER.FIELDS (From To Cc Subject Date Message-ID Priority X-Priority References Newsgroups In-Reply-To Content-Type)]) Dovecot seems to be shutting down after receiving this. Mulberry doesn't seem to have the problem, presumably because it's sending a different command sequence that doesn't stroke this. [Dovecot] Maildir Index Question

We have several hundred mailboxes that have thousands of files in them (spam boxes) We currently run a find command and remove the files that are over 7 days old but still have boxes with upto 60k messages in them. I know that dovecot will update the index files for each mailbox when the boxes is accessed by an IMAP client(Webmail using Squirrel)but that can take quite a while to index. What I would like to do is via a cron job after the old file remove is to force dovecot to reindex these boxes. That way when the users login to the webmail interface it is quicker. Does anyone know if a script is available to do this? Thanks Ron Culler

Hi, Some words about my Dovecot setup: - 10 dovecot servers - each server has some local mailboxes - each server has proxying enabled to seamlessly connect to another host if the mailbox is not local Running Dovecot 1.1.1 on FreeBSD 6.3-RELEASE-p3. First of all, local mailbox access is fine. Proxying works also as expected. Now for the actual problem: Shortly after startup, Dovecot starts throwing errors concerning connection which should be proxied. On the other hand, when restarting Dovecot, it works for a few minutes for at least as long as the FD usage as reported above stays at around 500. I remember from the docs that dovecot-login would require the double amount of file descriptors to run. Assuming my report is somewhat inaccurate and lags behind, I could imagine that upon a proxy requests it would effectively peak our at some 500 x 2 FDs. Thus effectively reaching the 1024 FD barrier. I conclude this from the fact that I currently have some 350 - 450 logins in parallel, most of which can and shell be proxied. From the error message in the logs I got the impression, that only proxied connections are affected. I was not able to reproduce the issue with non-proxied logins to local mailboxes. [Dovecot] Dovecot auto vacation with sieve doesn't work

Guys, I'm running out of hair to pull out ;). Can anyone out there say that this does work?? To me this is looking like a bug and I'm not sure whether it's the sieve plugin or the dovecot deliver program. I have also had no luck the the "reject" sending any reply back to the sender. My setup: OS: Solaris 10 sparc platform postfix: 2.5.2 dovecot: 1.1.2 sieve plugin: 1.1.5 I'm going back forth between procmail and sieve and having no luck. procmail will send the reply to the sender but doesn't deliver the message to the recipient. Sieve will deliver the message to the recipient but doesn't send the reply to the sender. Now if I can just combine the two, I'll be in business. Hello all! I tried to add the expire-plugin to my dovecot-installation (CentOS-RPM: dovecot-1.1.1-2_76.el5) and followed the plugin-page from the WIKI (http://wiki.dovecot.org/Plugins/Expire) Unfortunately I have problems with the dictionary: --> dovecot: Aug 05 13:30:25 Error: dict: Unknown dict module: db dovecot: Aug 05 13:30:25 Error: dict: Failed to initialize dictionary 'expire' <-- As far as I understand the hints from mailinglist-archive the db-support is not standard with dovecot and Timo suggested to use a mysql-connection. Are there any further tipps how to use the expire-plugin with mysql-connection (i.e. database-scheme, SQL-Select)? Kind regards, Jens

Hello Timo, I just switched from dovecot-1.0.14 to dovecot-1.1.2 and noticed a significant drop in the server load average (which has become lower and above all doesn't seem to have unexplained peaks). Indexes are still locally stored and nfs attribute caching is still off). I searched the list archives for an explanation of what changed in the code that could explain such an improvement but mostly (except maybe some index code rewrite mentions) found differences in features. Hi all, This is my first post here so i hope this will reach you :) My problem since a few days back is that IMAP doesn't seem to be started. The logfiles says's everything is in order, but port 143 isn't up and Squirrelmail can't connect, i have no clue what's causing this everything runned smoothly a couple of days ago. Im using postfix/amavis & spamassasin. Thank you, Timo, running dovecot with this changeset, \Seen stored perfectly. Hi, I'm getting a lot of the following messages in my mail.err log. Jul 12 11:25:51 mink dovecot: IMAP(user1(a)domain1.net): Corrupted transaction log file /virtual/store1/mail/u/user1_domain1.net/Maildir/.Sent/dovecot.index.log: Append with UID 925, but next_uid = 926 Jul 12 12:44:56 mink dovecot: IMAP(user2(a)domain1.net): Corrupted transaction log file /virtual/store2/mail/u/user2_domain1.net/Maildir/.Trash/dovecot.index.log: Append with UID 4927, but next_uid = 4931 Jul 12 12:45:19 mink dovecot: IMAP(user2(a)domain1.net): Corrupted transaction log file /virtual/store2/mail/u/user2_domain1.net/Maildir/.Trash/dovecot.index.log: Append with UID 4930, but next_uid = 4931 The users get the wrong headers and bodies being displayed in Thunderbird and I'm unsure of the symptoms in other browsers. I'm running two mail servers with two NFS servers for the mail stores. Both mail servers have access to both mail stores and I'm assuming that that is what's causing the problem. I'm running dovecot 1.0.10 (Ubuntu - so I'm using only packages provides by aptitude at the moment). Should dovecot be able to handle access by multiple machines for the indexes? Hey guys, got a question about the expire plugin. According to the wiki, the expire plugin "keeps an internal database (Berkeley DB or SQL)". I was wondering what fields in the mysql table are needed for expire to work. I assume it is setup is similar to the quota dict setup, so was just wondering what fields are required (i.e: select_field, where_field, username_field, for quota). Thanks

Greetings! My ultimate goal is to have fetchmail/getmail poll from POP3/IMAP servers and deliver mail into Dovecot mailboxes. This does not work because the Dovecot LDA for some reason fails. I believe I have narrowed down the problem to dovecot-auth not finding my userdb. But, I am able to connect to dovecot via IMAP in my MUA and preform operations (read, delete mail, create folders). This leads me to believe my userdb is setup correctly. Does anyone have any idea as to why dovecot-auth would not find my userdb? [Dovecot] FTS/squat search indexes built when?

I know that a given search index doesn't get built the first time until you do an actual search on it from an IMAP client. I don't much care about that; I'm the only user, and I don't create new folders too often. At worst, I could create a script to go search every folder once. But what I'm not clear about: Does it then get updated on every delivery by LDA? Or does the index also need to get updated when I do a search, assuming there's been at least one message delivered since the last search? Jay Levitt

Hi, I am running dovecot 1.0.rc7 on a Suse Linux server. The server has approx 200+ mailboxes. Last week the filesystem (/dev/mapper/datavg/dat2lv) ran out of space - causing it to do into read-only mode. When I realised this I allocated some more space and re-booted the machine... Strangely it seems that dovecot is still having problems... It's like dovecot doesn't realise that there is enough space on the file system. Also - it only is happening to a few users at this stage - not all users are having problems sending/receiving emails... [Dovecot] sieve multiple redirects

I got a sieve script like this: redirect "user(a)gmail.com"; redirect "someuser(a)hotmail.com"; keep; It seems to redirect the mail to the 1st user but not the 2nd. Any idea? From what I can tell, that is a valid sieve script. I am using an earlier RC version of dovecot - 1.1.rc4, going to be upgrading soon. There are also a few errors. I assume /home/orders is not needed? Also, does Dovecot go through Global Sieve script and then per-user script? It appears that the global script is not even used if the per-user script exists - anyway to change that so both are parsed in order? [Dovecot] RFE: Disallow DELETE of non-empty MBOX

It looks like this is already the rule for maildir, where one can't remove the folder if any files or subdirectories are present. I'd like to get this option for mbox folders, as I'd like to prevent "accidents" where users accidentally delete large folders by clicking the wrong thing and then too-quickly approving the confirmation dialog that pops up. (Impatient upper level management tends to do this. ;)) BTW, I'm using Mulberry for my client, and it unfortunately puts "Mark contents seen" right next to "Delete folder" on the context menu. I'm aware of the issue so I tend to be extra careful when I finish with the folder associated with a busy mailing list and mark all the uninteresting messages seen.

[Dovecot] bugzilla or other similar bug tracking systems

I was wondering if it could be useful to use such tools to keep track of users bugs. I find somehow harder to search the mailing list if a bug is known, if it's being worked on, if it needs more feedback, in witch release it has been eventually solved, and so on. Any thoughts? Regards, Diego.

This problem is apparently about changeset http://hg.dovecot.org/dovecot-1.1/rev/eec74a6ad62e. This change makes dovecot behaviour different from what is described in wiki, about sharing and making private /Seen flags, see http://wiki.dovecot.org/SharedMailboxes?highlight=(flags are shared or private) When I've tried to revert it, first time with my client it worked perfectly.
