Hello all, I'm trying to connect to a dovecot server I've just installed, using evolution. I have referred to the wiki and the RFC, but I still can't find the exact answer I'm looking for. From what I know, Dovecot uses the IMAP standard of 32 bit integers to uniquely identify messages. After a message is deleted from the mbox, can this UID ever be reissued to a new message or is that UID retired? What about after the 2 billion limit is reached? Thanks!

However, when dovecot tries to authenticate the user, the LDAP server receives the query and responds to it (according to the LDAP log file), but dovecot just hangs there. 180 seconds later, it drops the IMAP client. I tried to add pass_attrs, in case there was a bug in dovecot where it ignores the reply if there are no pass_attrs (even though none are needed), but it still fails the same way. Timo Sirainen suggested that I add a debug line to src/auth/db-ldap.c ldap_input() around line 372: msgid = ldap_msgid(res); // added line: i_info("LDAP: Received reply %d", msgid); I did this. Now, when the server first starts up, this line is logged. Seems there is a bug in 1.1-rc4 in regards to sieve/managesieve, this problem goes away if I downgrade to 1.0.13. [Dovecot] Dovecot LDA / Deliver question

Problem described: I am trying to get Postfix + Dovecot + MySQL setup to work together in a virtual mail hosting platform. I am running Postfix 2.3.x, and MySQL 5.0.x. I am trying to use Dovecot's LDA for delivery to the users vmail home directory -- usually under /var/vmail/domain.com/j/jdoe for home and /var/vmail/domain.com/j/jdoe/.maildir for mail location, using MAILDIR format. However, I cannot get Dovecot's LDA to write the maildir folders/files into the right location. It wants to write in MBOX format to /var/vmail/mail/inbox instead. When I force the mail_location variable...it just uses the system 'vmail' user (uid: 1101) and 'vmail' group (gid: 1101) that I assigned for the virtual mail user. mail_location = maildir:/var/vmail/%d/%1n/%n I am not sure where to go to troubleshoot Dovecot LDA...and how to turn up/down the verbosity of debug messages (albeit now I am logging the deliver info to /var/log/dovecot-deliver.log). Does anyone know what I am missing? Can Dovecot LDA be told how to deliver mail to the users maildir folder? Hi! I hope I'm using the right mailing for a feature request. I'm using dovecot on my server for a year now and I'm very happy with it. Its extremely stable and fast. Ok what is my situation why I'm asking a feature.. Users are retrieving mail using pop3 over the external ip address. When the user connects to there webmail. The webmail client (Squirrelmail) is using imap on the localhost. I would like to give some users the option to use imap over the external ip, I want to set option in my MySql backend configuration. As far as I know there isn't a possible solution on dovecot right now that's why I hope you can build a extra config parameter that gives me the possibility to allow users to retrieve email by imap by ip. So all users can do an imap request on localhost (for webmail) and some user are allowed to do an imap request over the external ip. [Dovecot] Single quote email addresses

Hi, I've just been told that I need to make our mail server cater to accounts with single quotes. Has anyone set dovecot up to do this or know of any documentation/howto on it, assuming it's possible at all. I'm running dovecot 1.0.5 on Ubuntu 7.10 if that makes much of a difference. Hello, I'm trying to get dovecot and postfix virtual domains working on an fc6 system. My software versions are postfix 2.4.5 installed from rpm and dovecot 1.0.3 also installed from rpm. I'm only running secure protocols, pop3s at the moment, imaps later on. I've set up postfix for virtual mailbox domains as per it's howto on the subject and confirmed that email sent gets delivered to the virtual area, which in this case is /home/vmail/domain.com/username/, there's a maildir under that area and incoming mail gets delivered by postfix to that area. In the first case the user is a shell user who has a login, in all other cases the users will be completely virtual, having no login account at all. When i atempt to get mail from the server using this user, the one with the login, i am getting a can not map username coming from dovecot. Hallo dovecot This is my first post on this list. I'm new to IMAP servers and i read lots of howtos. If I use the wrong term for some features please tell me the right term. I have installed dovecot under ubuntu 7.10 and it works fine. dovecot + fetchmail + postfix I would like to use shared folders the way that we have an email pool for info(a)mydomain.com user1(a)mydomain.com -> User1 user2(a)mydomain.com -> User2 user3(a)mydomain.com -> User3 info(a)mydomain.com -> Pool (look at this http://decembersoul.dyndns.org/wiki/images/c/c6/IMAP1.jpeg ) The users can see and process emails from the email pool. To process an email the user move the email from the email pool to his own inbox. This should make sure that only one user process a email. Shared folders are created by symlink. The problem is that, if a user move an email out of the email pool, the other users still can see the mail in the pool. It takes a long time to remove the mail from the pool for every user. Move TO the pool works immediatley. The user can make a "compress folder" to remove the emails but this can't be the soulution. [Dovecot] Minor namespace issue - inconsistent default value

I burned some time yesterday over a documentation inconsistency. The dovecot-example.conf file shipped with dovecot (checked with 1.1rc4 and the April 3 nightly), includes an indication at the top that the commented values listed are the defaults for the settings. Line 248 of this file has the inbox setting for a private namespace which indicates that the default value for this setting is true. However, line 358 of ./srv/master/master-settings.c sets the default value of the namespace inbox variable to false. With a single private namespace (what I was setting up), one wants this value to be true, however when using multiple namespaces the default should likely remain false. I propose keeping the coded default and changing the line in the example configuration file to indicate false. Before I determined that this was the issue, I had a single namespace defined (but not as INBOX), and dovecot (both deliver and imap) created and read from a .INBOX directory under the Maildir. Hi All, I run a little hosting company. I use Dovecot 1.0.10* with IMAP exclusively. Lots of my customers use Outlook or Outlook Express. This poses a problem. These programs don't and have absolutely no workarounds to move messages to a trash folder when deleted. They only mark the message for deletion. Then, users have to purge the message to actually delete it. Outlook has a way to hide deleted messages and also auto-purge them when moving to a different folder. That just doesn't cut it. (Thanks Microsoft! :-p ) So, I'm thinking Dovecot could pick up where Microsoft left off. It seems to me there needs to be two things done. First, a system that automatically copy a message marked for deletion from one folder (e.g. INBOX) to a trash folder (e.g. Trash, Deleted Messages, etc.) Dovecot's lazy_expunge might already do this, but I couldn't quite discern it from the wiki docs. Second, a way to only do this when Outlook or Outlook Express is the one who is deleting a message. Possibility? Comments? Cheers, Jason P.S. Thanks for the great software! *Yes, I know. I looked on the dovecot website, but didn't find an answer. With dovecot 1.0, is there a way to keep users from deleting their email? So that when they click the delete button on their email client, nothing happens/dovecot refuses to delete email, etc?

Hi, I'm just in the middle of setting up dovecot to serve IMAPS -- Actually I've finished apart from one thing: CRAM-MD5 passwords. I'm using SQL as a backend for the password storage, and I don't want to store the passwords in plaintext. I've also configured dovecot to be rather restrictive when it comes to authentication methods (only CRAM-MD5 is allowed). To generate the passwords to go into the database I can use the dovecotpw utility, but I'm wanting to stick some sort of minimal admin interface on the server to be able to manage the users etc without having to use the CLI. I've looked at the theoretical explanation of the hashing algorithm, and I've read through the source code that dovecotpw uses to generate the passwords with the intent of creating a higher level language library (Perl, Ruby, PHP ... whatever)) to generate passwords, but I don't seem to be able to replicate the functionality, and there don't seem to be any existing libraries that generate consistent results (that I've found). I don't have that much experience with C, and so I'm sure that I must have misunderstood how dovecotpw does its stuff. Perhaps someone could explain how the algorithm works? Hi all, I'm still trying to get Dovecot-deliver to work in my config. I have found the problem to be in the maildir lookup for Dovecot-deliver as logged in /var/log/maillog: "Apr 15 16:30:34 termserv dovecot: auth(default): static(user(a)zesgoes.nl): passdb doesn't support lookups, can't verify user's existence" The thing I don't get, is that if I remove the virtual_transport modifications in /etc/postfix/master.cf and /etc/postfix/main.cf and the socket listen in /etc/dovecot.conf, all works well. So dovecot has no problems looking up my users on a LDAP server as a passdb backend, but failes when using the same passdb for dovecot-deliver. How come? TIA, Wouter

Hello, I wonder if there is some possibility to force dovecot to use more than one ssl certificate. I would like to use a few certficates: one per IP We are hosting many different domains and I had to use stunnel to ensure encrypted connection for our clients using different certificates. But stunnel isn't a good solution and sometimes I need to restart stunnels because of some of it's processes hangs - after some improvements like setting ulimit it is better now but still it is not a permanent soulution. I would like to use is: 1.1.1.1 - certificate nr1 2.2.2.2 - certificate nr2 ..... Any suggestion?

Hi, I use dovecot as pop3 and imap(squirrelmail) server. When I create a folder through webmail and set some sieve rules(fileinto for example), messages will be delivered to that folder by lda, but will not be visibe for pop clients. Is it possible to download these messages ? (Dovecot 1.0, debian etch) regards

This is my approach, stored in /etc/cron.hourly. It's very new, so I'm still testing it. The goal is to learn HAM massages only if they are a day old, so that I can manually remove SPAM that slipped through. Mails tagged from Spamassassin are sorted automatically into the "Junk.Spam" mailbox and learned after 12 hours. [Dovecot] Sieve Frustrations

I'm soooo close, but this last little thing is eluding me... I have the following Sieve rule in my global sieve rule: require ["fileinto"]; # Move spam to spam folder if header :contains "X-Spam-Flag" "YES" { fileinto "Junk"; stop; } This isn't firing. The .Junk folder exists under the user directories, but messages that have the X-Spam-Flag set are still going into INBOX. My personal Sieve rules are firing properly (now), so I know Sieve is operational. Just the global rule isn't being applied. If it helps, I set up my server according http://workaround.org/articles/ispmail-etch/ - but on a Ubuntu Gutsy server with only a few minor deviations from that article. My protocol lda section of dovecot.conf has this: log_path = /home/vmail/dovecot-deliver.log global_script_path = /home/vmail/globalsieverc I don't see any messages in dovecot-deliver.log that says there are problems with Sieve. The above rule is in /home/vmail/globalsieverc as mentioned here. This was working once - but when I had it going into the "spam" folder. I changed the folder name to match what ThunderBird sets up automagically for it's junk controls. But like I say, the directory does exist. So, I'm a little stumped. Any suggestions on where I can look to sort this out? If it helps, I've attached my dovecot conf (via dovecot -n) below. Thank you for your time! Hi to all out there, i know this is not the right mailinglist for this issue, but i?m hoping to get maybe here an answer to my problem. i have succesfully migrated 12.000 mailboxes on a debaian with washington imap to maildir on sles10 with dovecot. although i had some post-converting work to do, i can say that almost everything went fine. but there is one problem with my LDA. When postfix is about to deliver a lot of mail (user-db is ldap) procmail dies with signal 11. here is the error log: Apr 3 08:19:17 mailvirtuell postfix/local[22367]: E42EF33A96: to=<root(a)fh-rosenheim.de>, relay=local, delay=17, delays=0.08/0.11/0/17, dsn=5.3.0, status=bounced (Command died with signal 11: "IFS=` `&& exec /usr/bin/procmail || exit 75 #Ja". [Dovecot] Delete old mails and refresh quota

Hello. I use dovecot 1.0.13. So, I can't use expire plugin (require dovecot 1.1+). For delete old mails in Junk mailboxe, I use a cron: find /var/mail/vmails/ -regex '.*Junk/cur/.*' -ctime +30 -delete It works. However, quota is not refreshed. If my quota is to 90% and I delete 85% of my mails, quota still 90%, not 5%. I must delete my maildirsize after this cron. Do you have another solution to actualisize my maildirsize after a delete of mail? Thanks! - Nicolas.

I had a nice long email written out describing my problem in detail. Between that, the list archives, and double-checking before posting, I'm happy to say my issue seems to be fixed. How's that for service from a mailing list? Helped me fix a problem before I have ever posted to it (this is my first post to this list). The issue was a faulty rule. Using a redirect to a folder rather than a fileinto. Guess it was still sorta valid though cuz I did run it through a sieve rule checker. Thanks list! Shawn

[Dovecot] temporary disable account

Hello, is there some way how to disable temporarily account or access to files. I need to backup with tar, but there is problem when tar is reading and some file changed (with --ignore-failed-read it continues but archive is not created and without --ignore-failed-read it fails). Some accounts are huge ;( Need something like qmail sticky bit or world writable directory - qmail is not delivering when one of above conditions hits. Thank you for helping me. -- Lampa

Hi. I use dovecot 1.0.13 on FreeBSD 7.0. I want my Junk mail will be deleted if my quota is exceeded. So, I configured trash plugin (with Dovecot wiki). In my dovecot.conf: protocol imap { mail_plugins = quota trash } plugin { trash = /usr/local/etc/dovecot-trash.conf } In my /usr/local/etc/dovecot-trash.conf: 1 Junk 2 Trash Emails in there mailboxes are never deleted. My mailbox is like this: .Junk dovecot-uidlist dovecot.index.log.2 tmp .Trash dovecot.index maildirsize cur dovecot.index.cache new dovecot-keywords dovecot.index.log subscriptions I want my .Junk directory be emptied when quota is exceeded. Guys, I'm getting strange messages on my new server with dovecot-1.1rc4 + lda + sieve + ldap + postfix + suse10. This server is in production since monday, and worked fine until today. [Dovecot] dovecot and postfix virtual mailbox domains

Hello, I'm trying to get dovecot and postfix virtual domains working on an fc6 system. My software versions are postfix 2.4.5 installed from rpm and dovecot 1.0.3 also installed from rpm. I'm only running secure protocols, pop3s at the moment, imaps later on. I've set up postfix for virtual mailbox domains as per it's howto on the subject and confirmed that email sent gets delivered to the virtual area, which in this case is /home/vmail/domain.com/username, there's a maildir under that. In this case the user is a shell user who has a login, in all other cases the users will be completely virtual, having no login account and being completely virtual. When i atempt to get mail from the server using this user, the one with the login, i am getting a can not map username coming from dovecot. [Dovecot] feature request: deny IP address via database

Hey folks. One feature I'd really like to see in dovecot is the ability to point it at a database (with a configurable query) and have it allow or deny a connection based on looking up the source IP address in that database. I run Postfix, and I've got it configured to use a database server for its smtpd_client_restrictions checks. Ideally I'd like to point dovecot at the same database table. I have external tools that maintain that table. I was thinking of writing it myself, but I'm running 1.0.10; I'd assume that any such modifications would need to be rewritten for 1.1. I understand that the behaviour requested is similar to that of allow_nets (http://wiki.dovecot.org/PasswordDatabase/ExtraFields/AllowNets) but modified to explicitly deny some IPs (individually or in the range form). If so, probably some of the work should be already done. Sorry, I do not have the programming abilities enough to face this. Incidentally, I would like to notice that I opened a thread a few days ago regarding allow_nets and database (Bill's request needs to make use of an external database too) because I am not able to make allow_nets work properly when using an external DB *and IP ranges*. Maybe Bill would like to block single IPs so this bug? wold not apply to his case if an extension or adaptation of allow_nets is done. Sieve appears to be compiled with it. I can access managesieve, and I have set up dovecot.conf with lda. I do not get a NO response when I PUTSCRIPI, but LISTSCRIPTS produces no result, so I assume it's not working properly, though if I try with a non-existent script I get an error message. Questions: 1. Is anyone else seeing this, or am I doing something wrong? 2. [Dovecot] Problem with dovecot under Vmware Server

Hi all, Recently installed dovecot and postfix under Fedora8 and it works great. Then I installed both postfix and dovecot under VMWare Server (different machine) copying the same configuration files but changing the hostname and domain as appropriate. When testing the installation using: telnet hostname 143, I receive * OK Dovecot ready But when I telnet on port 25, I receive: Trying 127.0.0.1... Connected to 127.0.0.1. Escape character is '^]'. Instead of: Trying 127.0.0.1... Connected to 127.0.0.1. Escape character is '^]'. 220 mail.kickspam.net ESMTP Postfix Naturally, I cannot send email. Outlook responds with Server timeout. I've rebooted and restarted services. I've checked poermissions and postfix master.cf How can I troubleshoot or does anyone have a quick answer? Thanks! [Dovecot] Broken Debian package

Hi, I have run Dovecot via Debian for some years but in the last few weeks something has broken....I have been upgrading Debian but today rebooted it to try and sort out a failed DLT....now I find dovecot is non-functional.... So, Where to look for faults please? ie logs? can I make dovecot verbose? Thunderbird if telling me Dovecot is not imap4 compliant........and I cannot connect to it... I have tried re-installing Dovecot but the Debian package contains no dovecot.conf....so I have dovecot imap-d and dovecot common installed but no config. So I copied back the config files from a safe location.... Hi. I'm a dovecot newbie. I've set my pop client to leave messages on the server for 7 days. I'm downloading the same messages over and over as dovecot appears to be overwriting X-UID's in the mbox's. I can't think of any other program on the system that might write to the mbox other than postfix (and that program doesn't appear to be writing X-UID). My setup has one user (system account: vmail) that owns all mbox's. The user_query always returns vmail's home, uid and gid (you can view the SELECT's in the log snippet below).I have a total of four pop3 virtual mbox's. The example below illustrates what happens to one of them (though this problem extends to the others as well). Greetings dovecot mailing list. I have implemented a relatively big dovecot setup (250k users) and overall I am very pleased with dovecot functionality and performance. Setup description: * dovecot 1.0.x * FreeBSD 6.3 * Postfix (using dovecot deliver as LDA). * OpenLdap backend * Storage is NFS (Clariion EMC NFSd for Maildir, and FreeBSD NFSd for Indexes). * Locking is fcntl using RPC.lockd. * Users are accessing mail using POP3 and IMAP (IMAP mainly via Squirrelmail, but also direct) * 3 frontends for POP/SMTP and 2 frontends for IMAP (webmail). I was under the impression that POP3 would exit when a lock is set, preventing more than one pop3 processes pr. user, but it doesn't seem to be the case. Stopping dovecot entirely, leaves these stale pop3/imap/deliver processes hanging, even with shutdown_clients = yes The windows-problem-solution (reboot) seems to be the only way to get rid of the locked processes. So: Has anyone else observed this behavior, and eventually found the magic cure ? I wonder if there was a way to implement a "max wall-clock time" per dovecot process type (i.e.. terminate process after for example 120 sec. delivery, 600 sec pop3 etc...), as a crude "garbage-collector". I have _almost_ got Dovecot working! One little snag... My users login using their email address as username. Each domain has their own LDAP subtree. Each user has an entry in the ou=users subtree of the domain subtree, and has a mail: field (inetOrgPerson) listing their email address/login name. I am trying to use auth_bind: when I login with jackmc(a)lorentz.com, dovecot should search for mail=jackmc(a)lorentz.com in the onelevel below ou=users,dc=lorentz,dc=com and find me as "cn=Jack McKinney,ou=users,dc=lorentz,dc=com". I have created an entry in LDAP (varmail) that should be able to do this query. [Dovecot] "Dumb" proxying?

I'm a database noob, and it really seems like it would be overkill for my setup: I just want to proxy all connections from my DMZ to my internal mail server -- same internal server for all users. I used to use perdition for this set up, but am having issues getting it to play nicely with my new servers. Can I bypass all of the SQL stuff and just have dovecot forward all POP/IMAP connections to a specific server? Or perhaps set up a wild card lookup in the database (preferably something serverless like sqlite) so that no matter the query, it'll return one server? I don't really want to add "database management" to my list of jobs I have to do, especially for ~1000 users, and when I don't handle user creation/deletion. -- Dan Bongert dbongert(a)ssc.wisc.edu

Hello, I saw the problem quite often in various posts but could not find a real solution . Problem is that I frequently get annoying popups from outlook 2007 about imap idle timeouts which block working with outlook until the popup is acknowledged. The popup says: Your IMAP server closed the connection. This can occur if you leave the connection idle for too long. Protocol: IMAP Server: testhost Port: 143 Error Code: 0x800CCCDD I tried to run dovecot with or without "imap_client_workarounds = outlook-idle" but do not see any difference. I am running dovecot on Red Hat Enterprise Linux Client release 5.1 (Tikanga). Below is the output of some commands to get a clue about my config. Background info: Our primary mailboxes are on exchange servers. As there is a size limit on the server mailboxes I am evaluating a local storage solution for our users. Thus I set up an additional mailbox in outlook using IMAP. Local .pst files can not be backuped easily (especially when outlook is running) and I am investigating a local IMAP server where users can move their mails to. This server can easily be backuped (even incrementally when using Maildir) and users do always have access to their mails. The drawbacks are that users must have an extra login to the imap server because I have no ldap access to the company AD server from our local site domain. The solution will not be accepted though if I can not prevent the frequent disconnect popups. [Dovecot] Confusion of Sieve filter scripts and the file separator. (Amatuer Siever)

Hello, I have just been playing around with sieve filters to split up all my incoming mail into the correct directories. I have created some subdirectories to put mailing list emails in and just want to check if my thinking is correct. I am using namespaces with the '/' character as the separator. When creating the fileinto line on my sieve scripts I thought I would have to use the '/' character to separate the folders (as horde mail also does), but that doesn't work (and produces a "Invalid folder" error) instead I must use the '.' character. I am using the dovecot deliver module and managesieve for my sieve stuff (dovecot 1.0.13). I am just wondering if this is the correct behaviour or if it is a bug of sorts. Cheers. From, Jack

[Dovecot] Icedove (Thunderbird) crashes when reading IMAP messages

This is a Debian lenny/sid installation. Dovecot has been installed on it for over a year, with no problems. Lately (i.e. the past few months), if I attempt to read a message, Icedove crashes. It does not do this when I read a message downloaded from the ISP's POP3 server (not that I do this very often - almost all my mail goes through Dovecot). I am now having to read email with KMail, but cannot send from it - that's another story. Googling for the past month or so reveals nothing: there seems to be no bug filed for this, and indeed I think it is an odd communication problem with dovecot that has not been seen before. Has anyone any experience with this, or any ideas how I should go about resolving it? I have not done so (because I don't know how to use the data, not being a coder), but can run strace and/or valgrind on icedove if that will help. I have 2 hosts: (a) - dovecot-1.0.5-6 - postfix-2.4.5-20 -> It's not the mx record for the domain, just holds the mailboxes -> Postfix uses LDAP for user lookup, dovecot too. -> Works ok if I set it to be the final mail destination, with Cyrus and Dovecot LDA (mailbox_transport). -> Has no domain associated (dns) with this ip address (b) - postfix-2.3.2-28 -> Has the mx record for that domain, has ip address that the domain points to. (users @ domain.org) -> Works ok if I install dovecot and set the mailbox_transport to be on this machine, both with dovecot and cyrus. What I'm trying to do: Have host (b) to receive mails for that domain, and by setting it's transport_maps to be /etc/postfix/transport, and there (tranport maps) point to host (a), using ltmp: "domain.org lmtp:ip_address_machine_A:24" ("domain.org lmtp:inet:ip_address_machine_A:24" does not work, gives me "fatal: valid hostname or network address required in server description: inet:ip_address_machine_A:24") Both machines have /etc/services with lmtp to port 24 tcp/udp. http://www.postfix.org/transport.5.html was not so clear to me. Ok, when I took out the "inet" part on the transport maps file, it connected to the host (a), which has this on master.cf: "machine_A_ip_address:24 inet n - n - - lmtp" it "worked", since machine (b) (received the mail and has mx record) delivered the mail to machine (a) (holds mailboxes, runs dovecot), but that stopped, machine (b) connects to port 24 on machine (a), and stays there, connected, without saying nothing (sniffed it). When I kill the connection (kill postfix on machine (a)), machine (b) complains on the log file: postfix/lmtp[704]: msg_id: to=<xx(a)xx.yy>, relay=machine_A[machine_A]:24, delay=223, delays=0.08/0.01/223/0, dsn=4.4.2, status=deferred (lost connection with machine_A[machine_A] while receiving the initial server greeting). -- questions -- I don't know if I'm doing things wrong (configuration error) or the wrong thing (should try other ways), so my questions: 1) Is this setup going to work ever, or it's wrong to try to get it to work? I want to hold mailboxes on a different host, and now I got to use dovecot (in case I hear: "try it with cyrus instead" =o)). 2) Viewing from the machine that receives the mail, and has mx record, the transport should be lmtp, right? Since it's now a matter of "delivery". Postfix: <...> -> <qmgr> -> (<local> or <smtp> or <pipe>) When using lmtp, I'm in <local>?? I mean, to get the message to the other machine (just mailboxes, no mx) I SHOULD USE LMTP(?) 3) Viewing from the machine holding the mailboxes, is there a way to make dovecot listen on that port? Or should I continue to use Postfix, and use postfix on this machine to deliver to dovecot (dovecot lda config works ok if using 1 and only 1 machine for everything - mx record, mailboxes). With Cyrus I talked lmtp directly, Postfix receives the mail and uses lmtp to talk to cyrus, using a unix socket. If anyone replies to the topic, and the discussion goes deeper on some of the alternatives, I paste my configs and come with further details, since what's working isolated I didn't paste here. Hi, I'm having a weir situation with MS Outlook and dovecot. I'm using POP for some users, some can connect, others cant. With tcpdump I got this packet coming from client to server: 2008-03-31 18:30:20.913718 IP (tos 0x0, ttl 128, id 1082, offset 0, flags [DF], proto: TCP (6), length: 48) 192.168.12.9.1072 > 192.168.5.124.110: S, cksum 0x90db (correct), 2564735473:2564735473(0) win 65535 <mss 1460,nop,nop,sackOK> E..0.:@...c.... ...|.0.n........p............... But the server never give an answer. I don't have any idea why the server do not answer, in error.log and info.log I got nothing. Dovecot version: 1.0.rc15-2etch3 (Debian package) And those are the workarrounds that I enabled: pop3_client_workarounds = outlook-no-nuls oe-ns-eoh I'm kind of lost, any tip is appreciated! Thanks!

This is anyway an important release, because it fixes two buffer overflows in search code which have been in all v1.1 releases (but not v1.0). Really stupid mistakes, I must have been tired or something when writing the code.. Anyway I now added code to notice these kind of buffer overflows when they happen (if --enable-debug is used), so hopefully these will be the last ones. * Fixed two buffer overflows in str_find_init(). It was used by SEARCH code when searching for headers or message body. Added code to catch these kind of overflows when compiling with --enable-debug. [Dovecot] deliver tries to compile already compiled sieve script

Hello, I'm trying to setup dovecot with sieve support in a way where all sieve scripts are precompiled. All sieve scripts are in /var/cache/sieve/. I believe I discovered a bug here. I describe below how to reproduce it. Dovecot and the user that deliver runs as do not have write permission in /var/cache/sieve/. h01:/var/cache/sieve# ls -la total 16 drwxr-xr-x 2 ecp ecp 4096 Mar 31 21:32 . drwxr-xr-x 10 root root 4096 Mar 31 20:14 .. -rw-r--r-- 1 ecp ecp 88 Mar 31 21:32 mailtest1(a)domain.com.sieve -rw-r--r-- 1 ecp ecp 132 Mar 31 21:32 mailtest1(a)domain.com.sievec When deliver runs it logs this error: open(/var/cache/sieve/mailtest1(a)domain.com.sievec.tmp) failed: Permission denied This indicates deliver tries to compile the script, even though the compiled version already is there. To verify I tested another case. I make the compiled script immutable and I did a chmod 777 on /var/cache/sieve/. Then deliver logs this error: rename(/var/cache/sieve/mailtest1(a)domain.com.sievec.tmp, /var/cache/sieve/mailtest1(a)domain.com.sievec) failed: Operation not permitted And deliver created the file mailtest1(a)domain.com.sievec.tmp. Some relevant pieces of my dovecot.conf: protocol lda { mail_plugins = quota cmusieve ... } plugin { sieve = /var/cache/sieve/%u.sieve } Anyone can help me? [Dovecot] Dovecot 1.1rc3 crashes with Dbox + imap_quota plugin

Version: Dovecot v1.1.rc3 OS: CentOS 5 running in OpenVZ CPU: x86_64 Was running fine with maildir and decided to get dbox a try. Test user created with a dbox mailstore backend and when a client logs in that tries to run a getquotaroot imap command the process SIGSEGV's. Have been able to narrow it down to dbox crashing against dict quota as well as dirsize. If using LDAP as a userdb with a "quota_rule" configured, the order of the LDAP entry can distort userdb results, depending on where the quota attribute is found. For instance, with this "dovecot-ldap.conf" snippet: user_attrs = homeDirectory=home,uidNumber=uid,gidNumber=gid,quotaKb=quota_rule=*:storage=%$ And this example LDAP entry: dn: uid=testuser,ou=people,dc=domain.com uid: testuser homeDirectory: /mail/testuser gidNumber: 100 cn: testuser quotaKb: 20480 uidNumber: 121212 When db_ldap_result_iterate_next_all() runs, "quotaKb" is encountered, which causes "ctx->template" to be set. On the next iteration, "uidNumber" is encountered, but "ctx->template" is still set, causing the "uid" value to be prepended with "*:storage=". This is reflected by an error in the log as: Invalid UID value '*:storage=121212' This can be fixed by adding a line after 1118 to src/auth/db-ldap.c: ctx->template = NULL; Hope this is helpful to someone, -Rich

[Dovecot] public folders fchown error

I was hoping this would be the right place to look for some help, I cannot make public folders get the right permissions. I continually get the fchown error in logs, and have googled high an low to find multiple solutions that do not work for me. I'm using maildir. I have sendmail with postfix distributing my mail. I created maildir's in each users personal directory. I then thought it would be neat to set up a public folder that people could dump spam and ham into, then have a cron script go through the directory and automatically sort it for bayes. However, when I put a file in the public folder, the permissions do not seem to work. I've put a dovecot-shared file with root.mail permissions, 660, in just about every directory (all the public folder directories, and every personal user's control and index location), I've chmod'd to 777 each file and folder to test, etc, and no matter what, the dovecot.index.tmp in the user's index folder comes through with their permissions, and this error shows up. Am I thinking this is something different then what it is or am I completely off base? Hi. Just switched to Dovecot from Courier last week and have been very pleased so far. The conversion was extremely painless, and I only hit a few small configuration issues before I was able to get the server up and running. Since then, I've been quite pleased - Dovecot's been very stable, and a good bit faster than courier as well. However, there's one nice feature from courier that I used to use that it doesn't seem like Dovecot provides. Wanted to see if that was indeed the case and, if so, if there was any workaround. In Courier, there was a setting whereby the server would automatically delete messages in the Trash once they were of a certain age. (The default was 7 days.) However, looking through the dovecot.conf, it didn't appear that Dovecot had any comparable setting. Anyone know how I might achieve this with Dovecot? TIA, DR

[Dovecot] mbox with sub-folders and messages?

Hi, Is it possible to have dovecot configured to use mbox format and yet have folders that contains sub-folders and messages? I'm thinking of a simple setup where any files directory with extension .sbd are presented to the IMAP client without the extension. So if you have a mbox file named BOX01 and a directory name BOX01.sdb would show has one on the client side (note: that is the way Thunderbird keeps it's mail locally). I know that the Maildir format does the sub-folders+messages, but I'm not really interested by the one file per email. Richard

Hello all, I configured imap_client_workarounds = outlook-idle after a customers complaint (Windows Vista, Outlook 2007) and after a week, she reports me that the issue has never repeated. So it has worked for me. I am running 1.0.rc15 (as from the original post) on a Debian etch box. [Dovecot] Proxy Problems

Hi, I'm trying to use dovecot as a proxy as described on http://wiki.dovecot.org/PasswordDatabase/ExtraFields/Proxy but without much success. The problem is that when I send a IMAP login command dovecot is responding with "BYE Internal login failure. Refer to server log for more information." Can anyone help me shed light on this problem? [Dovecot] Using LDA with postfix and virtual users

Hi list, I have 7 virtual users in a sql database. I don't want any systemusers or local delivery using postfix. On the postfix side everything works fine as long as I use the 'local' delivery agent. But since I want to use dovecot's sieve functionality I set local_transport to dovecot. From now on Postfix seems to ignore local_* settings like local_recipient_maps. [Dovecot] Mailbox to maildir conversion

I just today wrote Yet Another Conversion Script. This one differs from the rest that I've seen in that it will generate a dovecot- uidlist index. I've done some testing, but not any absolutely extensive testing. It works well from what I've tried. Invocation is simple. You pass the script the maildir and the mailbox file and it parses the mailbox file. The index file is generated if there is at least one e-mail with an X-IMAP header which contains the last ID used and the IMAP UIDVALIDITY. My old mail setup was ipop3d + sendmail (now dovecot + postfix) and it had a DON'T DELETE THIS MESSAGE e-mail with the aforementioned X-IMAP header. This e-mail will not be saved in the maildir. All e-mails with an X-UID header will get an entry in the uidlist file. The script works with python 2.3 or later. I haven't tested it on pre-2.3 python versions as I don't have any installed. http://habnabit.org/mb2md.py.gz I can answer questions about it if needed. I'm also willing to try to add any suggested features.

[Dovecot] Dovecot Startup error on FreeBSD

Hi, I have installed latest Dovecot 1.0.13 on a FreeBSD 6.2 with XMail (www.xmailserver.org) It works OK except one thing: error on startup. After each reboot there are lots of such error: dovecot: Mar 28 08:54:38 Error: child 916 (login) returned error 89 dovecot: Mar 28 08:54:54 Error: imap-login: No authentication sockets found When I restart dovecot by running startup script /usr/local/etc/rc.d/dovecot.sh restart the problem disappears. I have to manually restart dovecot after each reboot. After booting when error still there I have in this directory: $ ls /var/run/dovecot auth-master dict-server login master.pid If restart dovecot (working OK): $ ls /var/run/dovecot auth-master auth-worker.960 dict-server login master.pid As we see dovecot works when there appears a file named auth-worker.960 (the number 960 changes each time it restarted). [Dovecot] Moving main inbox file from /var/mail to ~/mail

Hi list, I am using Dovecot version 1.0.10 in a Debian package. At the moment, i have the main INBOX of each user in /var/mail/%u and others mboxes in ~/mail/. Here is the line coming from my /etc/dovecot/dovecont.conf mail_location = mbox:~/mail:INBOX=/var/mail/%u I would like to move the main inbox in each home folder with the rest of the others mboxes. What should be the process ? Should i only tkahe the network down, update my conf file and move the inbox of every user ? Or do I have to do something different ?
