[Dovecot] mbox with two storage locations

Hello, I'm trying to migrate a legacy system to Dovecot in which I need to support mbox format storage with the following parameters: Inbox is in: /var/spool/mail/%u Additional mail folders are stored in: /var/spool/mail2/%u (i.e. Spam, Sent, Trash, Drafts, etc.) /var/spool/mail and /var/spool/mail2 are configured with the same permissions. (Read/write/execute user root, Read/write/execute group mail). I've added mail as an additional group in the Dovecot configuration. # dovecot --version 1.0.10 # 1.0.10: /etc/dovecot.conf ssl_cert_file: /etc/pki/dovecot/certs/dovecot.pem ssl_key_file: /etc/pki/dovecot/private/dovecot.pem login_dir: /var/run/dovecot/login login_executable: /usr/libexec/dovecot/imap-login first_valid_uid: 100 mail_extra_groups: mail mail_location: mbox:/var/spool/mail2/%u:INBOX=/var/spool/mail/%u:INDEX=MEMORY auth default: passdb: driver: pam userdb: driver: passwd The problem is what when I run this configuration, I am not able to see any of the contents of /var/spool/mail2. I ran around with this problem for a while and ultimately found that the following fixes it: cp -Rpfd /var/spool/mail2 /home Change Dovecot to use /home/mail2/%u instead: # 1.0.10: /etc/dovecot.conf ssl_cert_file: /etc/pki/dovecot/certs/dovecot.pem ssl_key_file: /etc/pki/dovecot/private/dovecot.pem login_dir: /var/run/dovecot/login login_executable: /usr/libexec/dovecot/imap-login first_valid_uid: 100 mail_extra_groups: mail mail_location: mbox:/home/mail2/%u:INBOX=/var/spool/mail/%u:INDEX=MEMORY auth default: passdb: driver: pam userdb: driver: passwd Further investigation revealed that no path outside of /home would work for the storage of the mbox directory. Any ideas? Everything seems to work great except for this one (pretty major) issue. Also, /home, /var, and / are separate filesystems. I'm not sure if that's playing into this or not (doesn't seem like it, since it seems to have no issue storing INBOX in /var/spool/mail). Thanks, -Bill

I'm getting "Maximum number of mail processes exceeded" messages when 512 imap Processes are active. Dovecot reports: Warning: fd limit 1024 is lower than what Dovecot can use under full load (more than 1712). Hi, What exactly do you mean with "deliver preps the index"? Dovecot itself preps/creates/alters the index, when retrieving mail; right? Or are you (probably) saying this is one more benefit of using 'deliver'. Anyone know of any 'deliver'/(dovecot) stresstests with regards to forking and threading of the deliver binary? More so for the average disorganized INBOX in my only folder customers. Sieve makes a lot of things smoother for users, the customer. Especially if they expect server side rules. Obviously the rules that drop each message into a Backups or forward messages to other hosts take up what they take up. My sievec files have ancient mtimes. Hi, I just finished setting up a functional design with Dovecot+Sieve and it works like a charm. However I'm having serious doubts about the scalability of this. Here is part of a discussion we're having here: About Dovecot+Sieve. What happens here is that your MTA is configured to pass _all_ email to Dovecot which is configured as a LDA. In practice this means this in the Exim config: command = /usr/local/dovecot/libexec/dovecot/deliver So you call on a single binary "deliver". This binary then looks for a .dovecot.sieve file in the user maildir, _compiles_ it to .dovecot.sievec file, and than drops the mail according to the rules. Calling a single binary: that's isn't threaded, doesn't fork, and that has to compile a file (everytime?) it's called isn't scalable. Multiply this with 100 mails(calls) per second and this is bound for problems. The Dovecot/Sieve implementation is functional but not very elegant or robust. But this can be explained because Dovecot is build for _retrieving_ mail (imap/pop) and _not_ delivering mail. Any thoughts on this? Are there people out there with large Dovecot+Sieve implementations (100k+ users). Are there benchmarks available; how well does it perform under heavy load (mails/sec)? Cheers, Jan

i got error when downloading the email using pop. the message is "The RETR command did not succeed. Error retrieving a message. Mail server responded: ity: 3 (Normal) server dovecot-1.0.10 (debian etch-backports package) client mozilla thunderbird-1.5.0 (debian etch package) any advice ? tq

I used 1.0.10 with the quota-rewrite patch for v1.0. [Dovecot] Maildir Subsystems

Greetings - new to the list, so apologies of I'm asking questions that have been brought up before. I work for a large email provider, currently using qmail, vpopmail and courier-imap. We tend to make fairly regular customizations of the software, and if you folks have any knowledge of courier's code layout, you probably can understand why we hate working on it. Anyway, I am looking at the possibility of migrating to dovecot, after a quick review of the code layout. It is MUCH nicer to read. But I have a few specific questions: 1. We customize our maildir system fairly heavily, and I'm wondering where the maildir code is located. Specifically, anywhere the app actually does work on disk related to folders, mail content and quotas. While I have reviewed the code in brief, I thought it would be easier to poke this list to get pointed in the right direction. 2. Courier works quite well over NFS for us, and I'm curious why your documentation covers NFS more specifically. What aspects of the filesystem are normally used that don't translate easily to work over NFS? Do you use stuff like inotify or atimes? 3. If anyone has any suggestions on how to migrate tens of thousands of imap users from courier to dovecot in a few hour window, I'd like to hear them :) Thanks, Aaron Wiebe

Hello list, the scenario: A user has about 30k mails in his Maildir (all in INBOX) and needs to apply filtering. Provided he writes a working .dovecot.sieve script, is there a way to put all those already delivered mails through Dovecot's LDA and thus have the sieve filter rules applied? Hi all, this is my last try to get help before giving up. I red the dovecot-wiki several times, but it doesn´t work. I don´t know what´s wrong. If I open thunderbird I see the folder "public" but I cannot subscribe it. I have dovecot 1.0.10. Yes it´s a little bit old but it is the latest version under debian packages. [Dovecot] Postfix on one host/Dovecot (mailboxes) on another - How?

Hi, I'm using Dovecot 1.0.5 on OpenSUSE 10.3. I run postfix/amavis/clamav on one host, postfix uses LDAP to identify whether or not users exist. On this same machine I was running dovecot, so I used dovecot LDA on Postfix master.cf (as mentioned on http://heinous.org/wiki/Virtual_Domains,_Postfix,_Dovecot_LDA,_and_LDAP#Pos…) Now I want to run Dovecot on another machine, how should I configure postfix on that first machine? first machine: the domain my users know/use; webmail; postfix/amavis/clamav; mx record for domain all users have mail addresses; imapproxy (pointing to the second machine, where the imap server sits). second machine: just dovecot and user's mailboxes. [Dovecot] Deliver - Virtual users

Hello... I have dovecot 1.0.10 running with users in an LDAP database. Things are working as they should with IMAP. However, I can't seem to make deliver w. postfix work they way I want. My problems are: Mail to users who do not exist in LDAP or locally are accepted and mailfolders are created. I want mail to users that do not exist in LDAP or locally to be rejected. Mail is delivered to users even though they are over quota. Below I have included a bit of my log. This is what I see when sending a mail to an existing user. I don't understand the part that says: dovecot: auth(default): passwd(tbp(a)kontrapunkt.dk): lookup In my database users are stored as usernames without domains. Deliver seems to lookup the name with domain? The lookup ends with "unknown user". Then I wonder, why is the mail delivered if the user is unknown? I have included the "protocol lda" part from my dovecot.conf and the result of "dovecot -n". Can someone help me get this sorted out? Helo all, After enable auth_cache_size = 20480 and auth_cache_ttl = 0, dovecot stops working for users that are in cache. When you post to doveco(a)dovecot.org a copy is sent to me anyway. I'm not sure that I can help. I think you should check your permissions on the folder. And I think you should try with: fileinto "Junk"; Instead of: fileinto ".Junk"; (without the preceding dot that is) The preceding dot will automatically be added to the folder name by dovecot so it may create confusion if you use it too. Dovecot always uses the dot-prefix on folder names in the file system but this isn't really part of the IMAP/Sieve folder name that you wanna use. Regards, Mikkel

Hi, Is there a way to enable telemetry or debug-level logging in Dovecot IMAP, to see the exact IMAP command issued by the client and server? E.g. to confirm if a certain MUA is indeed using IMAP IDLE, or if it's doing LIST or LSUB. The IMAP connection is made over TLS/SSL, so tcpdump won't work. Thanks, Robert

Running CentOS Linux 5 with sendmail-procmail putting email in /var/spool/mail. I'm running pop3 only with the servers configured to authenticate with ldap (which is configured and running OK). I do have this same configuration on an older FC6 box and it works fine. I'm thinking I just need to upgrade dovecot given all the nss_ldap problems it has had, but I hate not using RPM packages and CentOS does not have upgraded packages. Hardware is Dell PowerEdge 1900 (64bit) with 2G RAM. Hopefully I'm doing something stupid and there's an easy fix for the packages and configuration I have. I'm seeing the following in the /var/log/maillog when I run dovecot. When I log in via telnet, I get the connection, but it never responds when I enter a user. [Dovecot] Dovecot User Script?

I am new to Dovecot. I have been using Postfix as a mail relay to our Exchange box and have been happy with the setup. The Linux box also runs Apache and VSFTPD for our WWW and FTP services. However, we are now starting up a new smaller domain. I am grabbed a spare box and have setup Fedora 7 on the machine. I am can handle apache, vsftpd, and postfix alright, but I am not familiar with dovecot. I need a simple setup of about 15-20 users. Instead of setting up each user through the terminal is there a PHP script that anyone would recommend? A setup of virtual users in mysql is preferred, since I already have that installed. I found a HOWTO on Howtoforge with ISPconfig, but it did not setup Dovecot. They forgot that setup. Any suggestions would be useful. Thanks! David White dwhite(a)fddisystems.com

Hello, I have dovecot mail server on a Debian etch: dovecot-common 1.0.10-1~bpo40+1 dovecot-imapd 1.0.10-1~bpo40+1 dovecot-pop3d 1.0.10-1~bpo40+1 It is configured with the quota plugins: protocol imap { mail_plugins = quota imap_quota imap_client_workarounds = outlook-idle } plugin { quota = fs } The problem is that I always get used space but not the limit, and the limit is not the same for all the users, I have tried from thunderbird and horde IMP from another server. Why is not reporting the quota limit? [Dovecot] corrupted index?

We're seeing the following sporadically in the log file (single line broken into separate lines for readability): Corrupted index cache file /home/user/mail/.index/.imap/INBOX/dovecot.index.cache: invalid record size We're running dovecot-1.0.7-2.fc8. The imap directory is in the user's NFS-mounted /home directory, but doveot is running on the same host as the /home filesystem. There's plenty of disk space and no other significant system problems. The mail index directory we rm'd a week/so ago, so doveoct has had the opportunity to rebuild it. Any ideas on what might be causing this? Is this issue anything to worry about? thanks.

For quite some time I have seen dovecot imap exit with a sig11 without any other error message, but usually with the frequency of between once per week and once per day (per server). A few weeks ago I finally enabled core dumping with debug symbols and it seemed to happen less often. I finally caught a coredump that wasn't overwritten. [Dovecot] Shared Mailbox

Hi all, I am a very new dovecot user and I do not have many experience in Linux configuration. I use dovecot v1.0.rc.15 (Debian package) IMAP service with virtual domains and users in /home/vmail and everything runs perfectly. Now I want to share the "testfolder" under the mailbox of "user1" to all memebers of "example.net" but I don?t understand the wiki pages (http://wiki.dovecot.org/SharedMailboxes) The ACL-plugin is on in dovecot.conf. my structure under /home/vmail -example.net --user1 ---/.drafts ---/.INBOX.testfolder ---/.Sent ---/.trash ---/Cur ........ --user2 --- (dito) -xxxx.de --user3 --user4 -test.com --user5 --user6 can anybody help with a configuration tip? [Dovecot] 1.0.10 - Can deliver get quotas from users maildirsize?

Hello... I'm experimenting with controlling users quota by manipulation the maildirsize files in virtual users (LDAP) homedirs (Is this OK?). This works with IMAP, but deliver via postfix delivers mail to users even if they are over quota. I would like to reject new mails in this case. Any ideas? Thanks, Tobias

Hi all, I'm using maildir dovecot on DRBD home, in the primary machine the emails delivered works fine and in the secondary machine works fine as well. Hello Everybody, I´m trying to make a work with procmail and deliver on Fedora 7. Part of flow are the following: - procmail get the mail from Sendmail - procmail ask to deliver/dovecot if have any retriction (sizer mailbox, etc) - procmail put the mail on inbox user. I have installed postfix, dovecot, mysql as per: http://wiki.dovecot.org/HowTo/DovecotLDAPostfixAdminMySQL ..on Debian Etch. I thought mailboxes were created by postfixadmin or postfix but I only get an error: warning: connect to transport dovecot: No such file or directory ..in the postfix log. No /var/vmail/example.com is created. After creating the domain directory and user directory, applying correct ownership, still it made no difference. If you need it, you're pretty much out of luck for now. v1.1 *quota* <http://wiki.dovecot.org/Quota/New> makes this possible. According to my tests it does indeed work. What is not supposed to work? [Dovecot] Duplicate Messages, Different X-UIDs?

We're running into an issue where sendmail is only receiving one e-mail, but after a client accesses the message via IMAP and moves it to another IMAP folder, the message duplicates but each message has different X-UID headers. Has anyone ever seen this type of anomaly before? Is it a bad IMAP client, or a known bug? Running 1.0.7 Thanks!

Furthermore, this is a N:N relationship, meaning one user needs to read one set of user's mailboxes, another user needs to read another set of mailboxes; both may or may not overlap. My idle solution would be to create some name space or a special "shared" directory in the secretary's Maildir/home dir and symlink the Maildir of all the "boss"'s Maildir roots. Because only the "secretary" shall use/see the definition, I'm not to make one namespace per relationship, but predefine one namespace and issue the path via userdb, right? Does somebody has some setup of this sort running? Are there some differences in v1.1 in this aspect? Currently I've setup that the secretaries connect with the real account of the boss(es), what is not good in my eyes, the secretaries should use their own accounts accessing the mails. I'm using dovecot 1.0.rc15 with debian etch. In dovecot.conf I have set mail_plugins = quota imap_quota for imap mail_plugins = quota for pop3 and quota = maildir:storage=10240. I seems that it doesn't work 'cause I send messages over 10M and it doesn't block my maildir box. I have to do something more?

[Dovecot] Passwordless Login Auth

I have Dovecot 1.0.5 running imaps successfully with Postfix on Ubuntu. Authorization is by SASL. Currently, my mail client (mutt) requests a password to access my folders. I would like to configure Dovecot so that a user logged into the localhost (i.e., already authenticated) does not receive the password prompt. Remote logins should of course demand the authentication, but if I'm logged into the server via SSH, for example, I'd like to be able to run mutt without the password prompt. Is this a viable proposition? Hi everyone, I'm trying to get dovecot to authenticate against LDAP. And it's a first time to run both dovecot (at all) and OpenLDAP (at all). Versions are below. Dovecot: 1.0.10 OpenLDAP 2.3.40 Dovecot cannot bind to the dn. This may be due to the fact that all google-able documentation doesn't give good examples or anyhting to hint. I'd prefer to use the rootdn by slapd.conf, but if I have to use a entry in the LDAP database, I will do that. I've tried the rootdn, password, overriding password with the same hash as in the slapd.conf via {SSHA} and nothing works. I then tried to create a uid (and dn) within the LDAP database, and it can't bind to that either. Long story short, I would very much appreciate a working example with OpenLDAP v2.3x and Dovecot 1.0x, on a FreeBSD 6.x host. If it makes any difference (I don't think it does), the mailserver is going to be located within a jail, which has given some problems to some software that are looking for a specific /dev entry or being able to customize that entry (permissions, links, etc). Thank you all for excellent software, and I really hope I can get this working. I'd like to point the finger at dovecot not being able to read userPassword but since no debugging information can be extracted, I have to assume. Dovecot experts, Does Dovecot support ldaps:\\ connections in dovecot-ldap.conf for ldap connections? I can get regular ldap:\\connections to work, but not ldaps:\\ connections. I have even downloaded the latest beta version of dovecot and it still doesn't work. If its not supported, will it be in the near future? Note: We are using Centos 5 and Redhat 5 systems. I have recently installed dovecot on a FreeBSD mailserver running postfix. But when I try to login with imap/pop3, I always get an error "stat failed: Not a directory". I guess it is something wrong with the mail format postfix uses to store the message, but I don't seem to find the correct solution. Hi, compiling dovecot 1.1.beta16 with configure option "--without-linux-quota" failed in line 444 of quota-fs.c as _LINUX_QUOTA_VERSION is an unquoted "no". Additionally using "--without-linux-quota" does not remove the quota code from dovecot as I expected. This is not a problem to me but it would be more clear if configure failed if "--without-linux-quota" is used and it is not possible to strip the quota code from dovecot. I know that I can use "--with-linux-quota=..." to specify a quota version but for me this option implied that it is possible to remove the filesystem quota code entirely if it is not needed. [Dovecot] Dovecot pgsqlauthentication database reconnection/failover problem

Hi, Our mail system uses dovecot-1.0-1.2.rc15.el5 in Centos-5.1 as our imap server. It connects to a pgsql database in another server as authentication backend. It works fine except occasionally fails to reconnect to the database after temporary network block, and dovecot has to be restarted to work again in such case. Since I can't find any specific setting in dovecot.conf to handle this reconnection problem, I opt to build a failover pgsql backend. Google led me to http://www.dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2008-January/027899.html. I followed the thread to modify my dovecot-sql.conf containing "connect = host=pgsql1 host=pgsql2 dbname=xxxx user=xxxx" If both databases are available, dovecot will choose pgsql2 as the default one, and user login works flawlessly. But when I block all traffic to host pgsql2, dovecot will repeatedly try pgsql2 and neglect available host pgsql1. I don't find relevent information in the dovecot wiki either. I've been stress testing it and can't find any problems anymore. - Some index/cache crashfixes TODO for v1.1.0: - mbox: We write From_-lines to message bodies unescaped and assume Content-Length: header allows us to skip over them. This probably worked in v0.99, but got broken when mbox code was rewritten for v1.0. This should be fixed somehow. - dbox: fsync()ing isn't done for saved messages. - maildir: after rename()ing files from tmp/ to new/ we should probably fsync() the new/ directory. - Squat: NFS support. Check/fix a potential locking problem. - Lucene: It gives all kinds of locking errors which cause other problems. Maybe Dovecot should do the locking itself so Lucene never needs to wait for locks? Has anyone here used Lucene before and knows about these issues?

Hi, I think that the wu-ftp style chroot /./ should be a configurable option. In our servers we have some home directories in /chroot-web/./username (where web users can upload their web sites in a chrooted environment) and all imap mail in /mail-disk/username. We are planning a dovecot migration from our modified version of uw-imap and we noticed that the chroot in /chroot-web/ can't be disabled. This patch adds the bool option home_slash_dot_slash_chroot (feel free to change this name to something easier to understand). Setting this to "no" disables the wu-ftp style /./ chroot. I hope this feature can be considered useful and soon included in dovecot. Regards, Diego Liziero.

Greetings all, I've got a dovecot server up that works just fine for a few minutes, and then suddenly won't authenticate users. On top of it, it keeps spawning dovecot-auth processes that won't go away. If any one has seen this or knows what's causing it I sure could use some help. Thanks much. Hello, I've got a problem using the plugin managsieve in dovecot (1.0.10 on gentoo linux). I use local unix accounts on a linux machine, one for each user with a .maildir in there home directory. I have recently gotten Dovecot running on my Solaris 5.8 mail server in order to replace UW IMAP. I'm currently testing it out with mail clients popular amongst my users. It's been working very well, with one vital exception. Apple Mail on OS X 10.4 is not completing authentication (I don't think it's even getting that far). All I'm seeing in the syslog for attempts with Apple Mail (for both IMAP and POP3) is a single line per attempt: Jan 29 17:20:01 paradox dovecot: [ID 107833 mail.info] imap-login: Disconnected: rip=X.X.X.X, lip=Y.Y.Y.Y, TLS handshake This is even with verbose for auth and for SSL. I know syslog plays well with mail.warning and mail.debug and mail.notice, so I'm not quite sure what's going on there. Nothing shows up in authlog or messages either. The OS X 10.5 Apple mail client works just fine, as do Thunderbird and even Eudora. There did not seem to be any coverage of this when I googled and went through the dovecot archives, so I'm thinking it might be some weird interaction between that particular client and the SSL/shadow implementation in dovecot (Things work in UW IMAP for the client). Hello Dovecot users, I finally managed to upgrade the ManageSieve implementation to dovecot-1.1. This also resulted in major restructuring of the code. The actual ManageSieve implementation is now available as a separate package and the patch now only contains the changes to the dovecot-1.1 tree that are necessary to use the ManageSieve service. The patch and the new package no longer contain another copy of the CMU Sieve code; the package depends on dovecot-sieve-1.1 for the sieve implementation. Change Log v0.10.0 ------------------- (Changed version scheme from vY to vX.Y.Z) * Upgraded to Dovecot 1.1: - The actual managesieve implementation is now a separate package. The dovecot tree still needs to be patched though to make dovecot recognize the new managesieve service. - Incorporated changes to imap/imap-login into the equivalent managesieve processes. - Removed cmusieve implementation from managesieve sources. It is now linked externally from the dovecot-sieve-1.1 package. - Restructured README.managesieve file into separate README, NEWS, TODO, DESIGN and INSTALL files. * Added support for new libsieve implementation (to be released). This package can be compiled with either the new or the old Sieve implementation (autodetected). If the new Sieve becomes stable, this package will be merged with it to make a single package for Dovecot Sieve support. Hello, I use convert-tool regularly for converting mbox based mail accounts to maildir based mail accounts. Today I tuned my convert script around convert-tool. I'm irritated about the exit codes. Hi, I’d like to extend the mail_log plugin to log the uid and keywords of a mail delivered by LDA. The keywords are set by the sieve plugin. [Dovecot] ACLs - what's the state of play?

Greetings - Could someone help me understand what the latest situation id with regard to ACLs and sharing mailboxes, please? Currently we are using Dovecot 1.0.x but will be moving to 1.1 when it comes out of Beta (and hopefully I'll get some time before too long to try building a test setup to play with). So I'm happy to talk only about ACLs and sharing mailboxes in 1.1... We are using Maildir storage format, and separate areas for each of the Control and Index files. We are using real system users with filestore quotas. Currently each user's files and directories are owner by their own uid and gid (but we can change this if need be), and are set to disallow filestore-level access to "group" or "others" (but we can change this too if need be). We need to know (quite urgently) if the following is/will be possible with 1.1: * Can person A have some (a subset) of their folders accessible by others? If so, can this be Read-Only? can it be Read-Write? * Can person A have all of their currently existing folders accessible by others, along with any folders they create in the future? * Is there support for the IMAP ACL extension, enabling users to set and manage access rights themselves from their mail client? * If system username "abc1" has made their top-level folder "Project" accessible by system username "def2", how does def2 actually specify the folder in order to open it? I have rummaged through the archives and Wiki but mostly these still talk about the magical "dovecot-shared" and "dovecot-acl" files, and how these need to be created/maintained by the system administrator. What we're hoping for is the Holy Grail of: * a Manager wanting to give their Secretary read-write (or in some cases read-only) access to some or all of their folders; * a Project Team wanting to access a common set of mail folders; * etc Under the old UW IMAP server you would authenticate as yourself, then specify someone else's folder with something like (the memory is hazy on this now): ~abc1/Project In the Dovecot Wiki I read a lot about namespaces and so on, but can't seem to piece together in my mind what these actually *look* like to the end-user wanting to access someone else's shared mailbox. Nor what can be done by the end-users, and what has to be done by the system administrator. Can anyone offer me advice, please? I am migrating from a cpanel server that has usernames in the format "user+domain.com". On the new server I am using the format "user.domain.com" and it all works perfectly with dovecot / postfix. Is there any way that I can allow users to login either with the "." or "+" delimiter? Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Dovecot version 1.0.rc26. Situation is essentially a forklift upgrade to make more horsepower available for email. Given a new mail store using Postfix and Dovecot (Maildir), is it possible to transfer from the old mail box (running the same config) or will this generate problems with the various indices maintained by Dovecot? I wanted this one to be called v1.1.rc1, but Squat indexes still aren't completely working. My simple tests seem to work OK, but after doing some random appends+searches+expunges with imaptest it's giving too few results when searching. I'm getting a bit tired of fixing the Squat code (although it's nearly done, finally..), so I'll most likely soon copy the current dovecot hg repository to dovecot-1.1 and start adding new features to the main dovecot repository for upcoming v1.2. The new features to be most likely implemented first are: - Mailbox list indexes - Thread indexes - Virtual mailboxes Some of the most important changes in beta15: - If dovecot master kills itself, the error message is now written to a file in base_dir as well as to log file. When Dovecot starts the next time it shows this error message to user and asks to look into error log file. I'm hoping this will reduce "why dovecot exits silently after starting it?" questions. - LDAP: Added tls_* settings for using TLS with OpenLDAP. - POP3-only users shouldn't get dovecot.index.cache files created anymore when quota plugin is used - Fixed/optimized handling pipelined commands - rawlog: added -b parameter to log packet boundaries. - auth: %a and %b were broken

Hi all. Intro: Timo has already done great job providing patch which allows postfix to authenticate directly against dovecot (included in latest postfix sorce code/release). Now I'm looking around for one more thing. I want to use dovecot's user db as source for postfix lookup tables. In particular: virtual_mailbox_maps Main reason is - postfix access rules and fighting against spam. This will allow to look up dovecot dovecot's user-db and check status of user. If user not exist mail is rejected at SMTP protocol level (instead of accepting mail and later getting bounce for dovecot's deliver). Rules I use looks like: smtpd_recipient_restrictions = permit_sasl_authenticated, permit_auth_destination, reject Of course I can write simple script which duplicates dovect's user-db information in format usable by postfix's postmap (this is way in all may mail systems works now). What I want is implement lookups directly against dovecot. Such table can be used for postfix virtual deliver too. It seems implement Dovecot authentication protocol for use in postfix table lookup mechanism is relative easy. Also there is no need to patch complete postfix source code. Postfix allow to create pugins (external dynamically loadable libraries) for such task. recent postfix source code already includes such plugins for mysql, ldap etc.. While running dovecot on debian etch using version 1.0.rc15-2etch3, i wonder the following: If i read the config files correctly, dovecot seems to have no equivalent of courier's IMAP_EMPTYTRASH=Trash:7 setting. Therefore, i wrote a script that dives into the user's directories and their maildirs. Hello, I just installed dovecot (1.0.10) to replace UW-IMAP. So far almost everything works. But I need shared folders (mbox format). I hope I've set up everything but when a user subscribes to one of the shared folders a file .subscriptions with perm 600 is created in the parent directory of the shared mailboxes ("namespace public" below). As I understand the docs that file should go to the user's home directory, right? What did I wrong? Thank you in advance. [Dovecot] Thunderbird can't see a maildir named .Inbox (yeah I know, poor name)

I discovered by chance while migrating some user email to dovecot, one of them had a mailbox called "Inbox" and my script migrated it to a Maildir called .Inbox but Thunderbird could not see it at all, even in subscription lists. I tested with my account and it looks like mutt CAN see it. This seems like a client issue so I'll just make my migration script rename anything called Inbox to avoid it, but I thought I would send a note incase anyone else trips on it.

My /etc/pam.d/dovecot file looks like this : #%PAM-1.0 auth required pam_nologin.so auth include system-auth account include system-auth session include system-auth At this point I seem to be out of options. Hi, On my system, I want to provide imap access for some of the users listed in /etc/passwd. The list of users should be provided by me, and should just be a list in a text file. All the userdb options are static (uid, gid, home directory). Unfortunately, I cannot think of a way to configure Dovecot to do this. The closest I get is with: passdb pam {} userdb passwd-file { args = /path/to/passwd-file } However, the passwd-file is now more complex than it really needs to be, as it includes fields for password, uid, gid and home directory as well. Is there some way to handle this? Or am I trying to do something stupid? Thanks! Koen

[Dovecot] Convert plugin question

Hi, Is it possible to change convert plugin, so it would keep old UIDVALIDITY and UIDNEXT after conversion from mbox to Maildir? As far as I can tell, this shouldn't be a big problem as this information already exists in the mbox. Well, at least for mboxes, that have that information. The problem is easy, if UIDVALIDITY changes during conversion, then client has to reload whole mailbox from the server. And this is not easy for users with 5+ Gb of mail. Thanks, FiL

[Dovecot] Sieve

Alright, so I know I need to get sieve installed. Seems fairly easy to make happen. However, in the documentation it tells me to find dovecot-config and supply that directory into the --with-dovecot= configuration option. For some reason I do not have that file on my machine. I have used find / -name 'dovecot-config' to search for it and it is not there. Is it going to be a problem that the file is not on my machine? Thanks, Fred

Hi, I'm setting up dovecot pop3 deamon for a small set of mailbox. I want to be able to set a small set of mailbox simply, so I've used "passdb passwd-file" + virtual mailboxes with "userdb static". My problem is that it seems that postfix accept and create mailbox for every address I post. It is configured to use local delivery through dovecot's deliver. How do I force deliver to retrun an error if the destination is not defined in the passwd-file? The doc said that "userdb static" should do a lookup automatically. But no luke for me. Is it really a deliver problem, or a postfix configuration problem? Any, hint? [Dovecot] High availability strategies?

Anyone here trying any "high availability" strategies for mail servers? (Ralph what do you do?) I am reading up a little on DRBD + OCFS for a master/master setup but this doesn't seem to address how to avoid having a single master proxy process (assuming that we are running on rented equip and don't have ability to shift IP addresses around servers). It appears to be possible to play games with DNS and short expiries, but this causes extra DNS traffic for the general case when we are up and running? We had some bad ram in a server recently and it's the worst possible situation. Server locking up, downtime, but it's not easy to repro and fix... (only happens every few days. Memcheck found nothing...) How could we redesign our setup to be resilient against this? (How does Google or Yahoo do it?) For reference I am using vservers to host dovecot and this is working very nicely and makes it real simple to chuck the config onto another host and test things (upgrades, etc). Highly recommended. Any suggestions (from people who have tried stuff)? Cheers Ed W

Hi, I'm testing dovecot 1.1.beta14 on two debian etch with drbd+ocfs2[active/active], I use qmail+vpopmail(userdb) and three front-end with openbsd 4.2 with dovecot 1.1.beta14 as proxy with passdb sql through vpopmail database. Is posible to add logs into vpopmail.vlog from proxys?, like "update vlog blah blah..." or in other sql database? I tried with post login scripting but I don't recibe any variable. [Dovecot] IMAP quotas - Reasonable size?

Hello... I'm setting up dovecot (IMAP only) at an ad-agency (Lots of big files attached to mails). I'm wondering... What would you consider to be reasonable mail quota? My concern is, that some client-software will have problems with huge mailboxes. I was going to give everyone 2GB, but some users demand 15GB+. Does dovecot "prefer" mailboxes within a certain size? Hello, Im having problems getting Dovecot to read the quota info from MySQL. My current dovecot.conf file is below. [Dovecot] NULL for password and proxy fields

In the course of experimenting with getting dovecot proxying to work, I took a guess at two things. These work fine for me, but now I'm wondering if they are "as designed" or just a lucky accident that might stop working in the future. (I'm using dovecot 1.0.rc17, which is the included version in Ubuntu Feisty. (I am aware that some details change in v1.1, and I'm not worried about that right now.) http://wiki.dovecot.org/PasswordDatabase/ExtraFields/Proxy 1. The wiki page says about password forwarding, "Make sure that the authentication succeeds with any given password. You can do this by using empty passwords." I didn't know exactly now to interpret that last part, so I tried returning NULL as the value of the "password" field for proxy cases. That seems to make dovecot skip the password check will forwarding the user-submitted password to the proxy target host. Is that the intent of that part of that wiki page? 2. It looks like any value at all for the "proxy" field in the passdb lookup turns proxying on. The one exception is a value of NULL for "proxy", in which case proxying is not turned on and proxy-related other fields are ignored. Is that how it's intended to work? If someone can give and informend confirmation that this is as-designed, I can add some clarifying remarks on those points on the wiki page.
