[Dovecot] ldaps support in dovecot-ldap.conf?

Dovecot experts, Does Dovecot support ldaps:\\ connections in dovecot-ldap.conf for ldap connections? I can get regular ldap:\\connections to work, but not ldaps:\\ connections. I have even downloaded the latest beta version of dovecot and it still doesn't work. If its not supported, will it be in the near future? Note: We are using Centos 5 and Redhat 5 systems. When I add the --with-pam option in my configure command I get the following error: checking for pam_start in -lpam... no configure: error: Can't build with PAM support: libpam not found PAM is most certainly installed on the machine: ii libpam-modules 0.79-5 Pluggable Authentication Modules for PAM ii libpam-runtime 0.79-5 Runtime support for the PAM library ii libpam0g 0.79-5 Pluggable Authentication Modules library Dovecot from package worked just fine with PAM. Also this file already exists: cat /etc/pam.d/dovecot #%PAM-1.0 @include common-auth @include common-account @include common-session I have run ldconfig etc. And I have the following files (all in /lib): /lib/libpamc.so.0 /lib/libpamc.so.0.79 /lib/libpam_misc.so.0 /lib/libpam_misc.so.0.79 /lib/libpam.so.0 /lib/libpam.so.0.79 So it seems that configure is not checking the right places for the libpam library? How can I tell it to look in /lib? Also what does (auto) mean (--with-pam (auto)): it's confusing. It gives the impression that, like (default), this option is added 'automatically'. Cheers, Jan

[Dovecot] stat failed: Not a directory

I have recently installed dovecot on a FreeBSD mailserver running postfix. But when I try to login with imap/pop3, I always get an error "stat failed: Not a directory". I guess it is something wrong with the mail format postfix uses to store the message, but I don't seem to find the correct solution. [Dovecot] --without-linux-quota

Hi, compiling dovecot 1.1.beta16 with configure option "--without-linux-quota" failed in line 444 of quota-fs.c as _LINUX_QUOTA_VERSION is an unquoted "no". Additionally using "--without-linux-quota" does not remove the quota code from dovecot as I expected. This is not a problem to me but it would be more clear if configure failed if "--without-linux-quota" is used and it is not possible to strip the quota code from dovecot. I know that I can use "--with-linux-quota=..." to specify a quota version but for me this option implied that it is possible to remove the filesystem quota code entirely if it is not needed. [Dovecot] Dovecot pgsqlauthentication database reconnection/failover problem

Hi, Our mail system uses dovecot-1.0-1.2.rc15.el5 in Centos-5.1 as our imap server. It connects to a pgsql database in another server as authentication backend. It works fine except occasionally fails to reconnect to the database after temporary network block, and dovecot has to be restarted to work again in such case. Since I can't find any specific setting in dovecot.conf to handle this reconnection problem, I opt to build a failover pgsql backend. Google led me to http://www.dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2008-January/027899.html. I followed the thread to modify my dovecot-sql.conf containing "connect = host=pgsql1 host=pgsql2 dbname=xxxx user=xxxx" If both databases are available, dovecot will choose pgsql2 as the default one, and user login works flawlessly. But when I block all traffic to host pgsql2, dovecot will repeatedly try pgsql2 and neglect available host pgsql1. I don't find relevent information in the dovecot wiki either. Now's a good time to start testing v1.1 :) Changes since beta15: - Squat is finally working and supports expunging messages from it. I've been stress testing it and can't find any problems anymore. - Some index/cache crashfixes TODO for v1.1.0: - mbox: We write From_-lines to message bodies unescaped and assume Content-Length: header allows us to skip over them. This probably worked in v0.99, but got broken when mbox code was rewritten for v1.0. This should be fixed somehow. - dbox: fsync()ing isn't done for saved messages. - maildir: after rename()ing files from tmp/ to new/ we should probably fsync() the new/ directory. - Squat: NFS support. Check/fix a potential locking problem. - Lucene: It gives all kinds of locking errors which cause other problems. Maybe Dovecot should do the locking itself so Lucene never needs to wait for locks? Has anyone here used Lucene before and knows about these issues?

Hi, I think that the wu-ftp style chroot /./ should be a configurable option. In our servers we have some home directories in /chroot-web/./username (where web users can upload their web sites in a chrooted environment) and all imap mail in /mail-disk/username. We are planning a dovecot migration from our modified version of uw-imap and we noticed that the chroot in /chroot-web/ can't be disabled. This patch adds the bool option home_slash_dot_slash_chroot (feel free to change this name to something easier to understand). Setting this to "no" disables the wu-ftp style /./ chroot. I hope this feature can be considered useful and soon included in dovecot. Regards, Diego Liziero.

Hey guys, Is it possible to deny a user on POP or IMAP! For example, on the primary server we use POP3 and IMAP but how I can force a user to use POP3 and be unable to authenticate on IMAP ? Thanks Sebastien

Greetings all, I've got a dovecot server up that works just fine for a few minutes, and then suddenly won't authenticate users. On top of it, it keeps spawning dovecot-auth processes that won't go away. If any one has seen this or knows what's causing it I sure could use some help. Thanks much. [Dovecot] Managesieve with local accounts

Hello, I've got a problem using the plugin managsieve in dovecot (1.0.10 on gentoo linux). I use local unix accounts on a linux machine, one for each user with a .maildir in there home directory. Here is a snippet of the logging. When I do either: $ hg clone http://hg.dovecot.org/dovecot/1.1/ or $ hg clone http://hg.dovecot.org/dovecot/ and cd into the resulting directory ("1.1/" or "dovecot/") and do autogen.sh and configure, ./configure tells me at the end: NOTE: This is the UNSTABLE development branch of Dovecot v1.2. I wanted Dovecot v1.1, I thought, to help Timo get that out the door! [Dovecot] Solaris 10 / 1.1.beta15 imap cores

Hi, I've been using 1.0 but moved to beta to see if it works before release. Both b14 and b15 dies sometimes when accessing folders. Last time I fixed this by moving one message from folder to another and then back. Next I'm trying to build this with debugging enabled. I have recently gotten Dovecot running on my Solaris 5.8 mail server in order to replace UW IMAP. I'm currently testing it out with mail clients popular amongst my users. It's been working very well, with one vital exception. Apple Mail on OS X 10.4 is not completing authentication (I don't think it's even getting that far). All I'm seeing in the syslog for attempts with Apple Mail (for both IMAP and POP3) is a single line per attempt: Jan 29 17:20:01 paradox dovecot: [ID 107833 mail.info] imap-login: Disconnected: rip=X.X.X.X, lip=Y.Y.Y.Y, TLS handshake This is even with verbose for auth and for SSL. I know syslog plays well with mail.warning and mail.debug and mail.notice, so I'm not quite sure what's going on there. Nothing shows up in authlog or messages either. The OS X 10.5 Apple mail client works just fine, as do Thunderbird and even Eudora. There did not seem to be any coverage of this when I googled and went through the dovecot archives, so I'm thinking it might be some weird interaction between that particular client and the SSL/shadow implementation in dovecot (Things work in UW IMAP for the client). Hello Dovecot users, I finally managed to upgrade the ManageSieve implementation to dovecot-1.1. This also resulted in major restructuring of the code. The actual ManageSieve implementation is now available as a separate package and the patch now only contains the changes to the dovecot-1.1 tree that are necessary to use the ManageSieve service. The patch and the new package no longer contain another copy of the CMU Sieve code; the package depends on dovecot-sieve-1.1 for the sieve implementation. Change Log v0.10.0 ------------------- (Changed version scheme from vY to vX.Y.Z) * Upgraded to Dovecot 1.1: - The actual managesieve implementation is now a separate package. The dovecot tree still needs to be patched though to make dovecot recognize the new managesieve service. - Incorporated changes to imap/imap-login into the equivalent managesieve processes. - Removed cmusieve implementation from managesieve sources. It is now linked externally from the dovecot-sieve-1.1 package. - Restructured README.managesieve file into separate README, NEWS, TODO, DESIGN and INSTALL files. * Added support for new libsieve implementation (to be released). This package can be compiled with either the new or the old Sieve implementation (autodetected). If the new Sieve becomes stable, this package will be merged with it to make a single package for Dovecot Sieve support. Hi, I’d like to extend the mail_log plugin to log the uid and keywords of a mail delivered by LDA. The keywords are set by the sieve plugin. [Dovecot] ACLs - what's the state of play?

Greetings - Could someone help me understand what the latest situation id with regard to ACLs and sharing mailboxes, please? Currently we are using Dovecot 1.0.x but will be moving to 1.1 when it comes out of Beta (and hopefully I'll get some time before too long to try building a test setup to play with). So I'm happy to talk only about ACLs and sharing mailboxes in 1.1... We are using Maildir storage format, and separate areas for each of the Control and Index files. We are using real system users with filestore quotas. Currently each user's files and directories are owner by their own uid and gid (but we can change this if need be), and are set to disallow filestore-level access to "group" or "others" (but we can change this too if need be). We need to know (quite urgently) if the following is/will be possible with 1.1: * Can person A have some (a subset) of their folders accessible by others? If so, can this be Read-Only? can it be Read-Write? * Can person A have all of their currently existing folders accessible by others, along with any folders they create in the future? * Is there support for the IMAP ACL extension, enabling users to set and manage access rights themselves from their mail client? * If system username "abc1" has made their top-level folder "Project" accessible by system username "def2", how does def2 actually specify the folder in order to open it? I have rummaged through the archives and Wiki but mostly these still talk about the magical "dovecot-shared" and "dovecot-acl" files, and how these need to be created/maintained by the system administrator. What we're hoping for is the Holy Grail of: * a Manager wanting to give their Secretary read-write (or in some cases read-only) access to some or all of their folders; * a Project Team wanting to access a common set of mail folders; * etc Under the old UW IMAP server you would authenticate as yourself, then specify someone else's folder with something like (the memory is hazy on this now): ~abc1/Project In the Dovecot Wiki I read a lot about namespaces and so on, but can't seem to piece together in my mind what these actually *look* like to the end-user wanting to access someone else's shared mailbox. I have followed the installation of sieve, postfix, dovecot under a Debian via apt-get. The program deliver is used correctly by Postfix (master.cf). I am migrating from a cpanel server that has usernames in the format "user+domain.com". On the new server I am using the format "user.domain.com" and it all works perfectly with dovecot / postfix. Is there any way that I can allow users to login either with the "." or "+" delimiter? Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

[Dovecot] merging Maildir from old machine to new machine

Dovecot version 1.0.rc26. Situation is essentially a forklift upgrade to make more horsepower available for email. Given a new mail store using Postfix and Dovecot (Maildir), is it possible to transfer from the old mail box (running the same config) or will this generate problems with the various indices maintained by Dovecot? Hi I wonder how can I know if a mailbox is not beeing consulted. I mean I have severals mailboxs but I know some account are not used. I like to know how to determine wich mail accounts are not beeing used. Is there any way in dovecot to know the las time a user loged in to dovecot? Thanks

I wanted this one to be called v1.1.rc1, but Squat indexes still aren't completely working. My simple tests seem to work OK, but after doing some random appends+searches+expunges with imaptest it's giving too few results when searching. I'm getting a bit tired of fixing the Squat code (although it's nearly done, finally..), so I'll most likely soon copy the current dovecot hg repository to dovecot-1.1 and start adding new features to the main dovecot repository for upcoming v1.2. The new features to be most likely implemented first are: - Mailbox list indexes - Thread indexes - Virtual mailboxes Some of the most important changes in beta15: - If dovecot master kills itself, the error message is now written to a file in base_dir as well as to log file. When Dovecot starts the next time it shows this error message to user and asks to look into error log file. I'm hoping this will reduce "why dovecot exits silently after starting it?" questions. - LDAP: Added tls_* settings for using TLS with OpenLDAP. - POP3-only users shouldn't get dovecot.index.cache files created anymore when quota plugin is used - Fixed/optimized handling pipelined commands - rawlog: added -b parameter to log packet boundaries. - auth: %a and %b were broken

Hi all. Intro: Timo has already done great job providing patch which allows postfix to authenticate directly against dovecot (included in latest postfix sorce code/release). Now I'm looking around for one more thing. I want to use dovecot's user db as source for postfix lookup tables. In particular: virtual_mailbox_maps Main reason is - postfix access rules and fighting against spam. This will allow to look up dovecot dovecot's user-db and check status of user. If user not exist mail is rejected at SMTP protocol level (instead of accepting mail and later getting bounce for dovecot's deliver). Rules I use looks like: smtpd_recipient_restrictions = permit_sasl_authenticated, permit_auth_destination, reject Of course I can write simple script which duplicates dovect's user-db information in format usable by postfix's postmap (this is way in all may mail systems works now). What I want is implement lookups directly against dovecot. Such table can be used for postfix virtual deliver too. It seems implement Dovecot authentication protocol for use in postfix table lookup mechanism is relative easy. Also there is no need to patch complete postfix source code. Postfix allow to create pugins (external dynamically loadable libraries) for such task. recent postfix source code already includes such plugins for mysql, ldap etc.. I'm trying to track down the site but seem to have deleted the message I'd carefully been keeping. While running dovecot on debian etch using version 1.0.rc15-2etch3, i wonder the following: If i read the config files correctly, dovecot seems to have no equivalent of courier's IMAP_EMPTYTRASH=Trash:7 setting. Therefore, i wrote a script that dives into the user's directories and their maildirs. Hello, I just installed dovecot (1.0.10) to replace UW-IMAP. So far almost everything works. But I need shared folders (mbox format). I hope I've set up everything but when a user subscribes to one of the shared folders a file .subscriptions with perm 600 is created in the parent directory of the shared mailboxes ("namespace public" below). As I understand the docs that file should go to the user's home directory, right? What did I wrong? Thank you in advance. I noticed these happen when one of my users searches his Trash folder which he doesn't empty. He uses thunderbird and it is reproducable. [Dovecot] Thunderbird can't see a maildir named .Inbox (yeah I know, poor name)

I discovered by chance while migrating some user email to dovecot, one of them had a mailbox called "Inbox" and my script migrated it to a Maildir called .Inbox but Thunderbird could not see it at all, even in subscription lists. I tested with my account and it looks like mutt CAN see it. This seems like a client issue so I'll just make my migration script rename anything called Inbox to avoid it, but I thought I would send a note incase anyone else trips on it.

My /etc/pam.d/dovecot file looks like this : #%PAM-1.0 auth required pam_nologin.so auth include system-auth account include system-auth session include system-auth At this point I seem to be out of options. Hi, On my system, I want to provide imap access for some of the users listed in /etc/passwd. The list of users should be provided by me, and should just be a list in a text file. All the userdb options are static (uid, gid, home directory). Unfortunately, I cannot think of a way to configure Dovecot to do this. The closest I get is with: passdb pam {} userdb passwd-file { args = /path/to/passwd-file } However, the passwd-file is now more complex than it really needs to be, as it includes fields for password, uid, gid and home directory as well. Is there some way to handle this? Or am I trying to do something stupid? Thanks! Koen

Hi, Is it possible to change convert plugin, so it would keep old UIDVALIDITY and UIDNEXT after conversion from mbox to Maildir? As far as I can tell, this shouldn't be a big problem as this information already exists in the mbox. Well, at least for mboxes, that have that information. The problem is easy, if UIDVALIDITY changes during conversion, then client has to reload whole mailbox from the server. And this is not easy for users with 5+ Gb of mail. Thanks, FiL

Alright, so I know I need to get sieve installed. Seems fairly easy to make happen. However, in the documentation it tells me to find dovecot-config and supply that directory into the --with-dovecot= configuration option. For some reason I do not have that file on my machine. I have used find / -name 'dovecot-config' to search for it and it is not there. Is it going to be a problem that the file is not on my machine? Thanks, Fred

Hi, I'm setting up dovecot pop3 deamon for a small set of mailbox. I want to be able to set a small set of mailbox simply, so I've used "passdb passwd-file" + virtual mailboxes with "userdb static". My problem is that it seems that postfix accept and create mailbox for every address I post. It is configured to use local delivery through dovecot's deliver. How do I force deliver to retrun an error if the destination is not defined in the passwd-file? The doc said that "userdb static" should do a lookup automatically. But no luke for me. Is it really a deliver problem, or a postfix configuration problem? Any, hint? [Dovecot] High availability strategies?

Anyone here trying any "high availability" strategies for mail servers? (Ralph what do you do?) I am reading up a little on DRBD + OCFS for a master/master setup but this doesn't seem to address how to avoid having a single master proxy process (assuming that we are running on rented equip and don't have ability to shift IP addresses around servers). It appears to be possible to play games with DNS and short expiries, but this causes extra DNS traffic for the general case when we are up and running? We had some bad ram in a server recently and it's the worst possible situation. Server locking up, downtime, but it's not easy to repro and fix... (only happens every few days. Memcheck found nothing...) How could we redesign our setup to be resilient against this? (How does Google or Yahoo do it?) For reference I am using vservers to host dovecot and this is working very nicely and makes it real simple to chuck the config onto another host and test things (upgrades, etc). Highly recommended. Any suggestions (from people who have tried stuff)? Cheers Ed W

Hello... I'm setting up dovecot (IMAP only) at an ad-agency (Lots of big files attached to mails). I'm wondering... What would you consider to be reasonable mail quota? My concern is, that some client-software will have problems with huge mailboxes. I was going to give everyone 2GB, but some users demand 15GB+. Does dovecot "prefer" mailboxes within a certain size? In the course of experimenting with getting dovecot proxying to work, I took a guess at two things. These work fine for me, but now I'm wondering if they are "as designed" or just a lucky accident that might stop working in the future. (I'm using dovecot 1.0.rc17, which is the included version in Ubuntu Feisty. (I am aware that some details change in v1.1, and I'm not worried about that right now.) http://wiki.dovecot.org/PasswordDatabase/ExtraFields/Proxy 1. The wiki page says about password forwarding, "Make sure that the authentication succeeds with any given password. You can do this by using empty passwords." I didn't know exactly now to interpret that last part, so I tried returning NULL as the value of the "password" field for proxy cases. That seems to make dovecot skip the password check will forwarding the user-submitted password to the proxy target host. Is that the intent of that part of that wiki page? 2. It looks like any value at all for the "proxy" field in the passdb lookup turns proxying on. The one exception is a value of NULL for "proxy", in which case proxying is not turned on and proxy-related other fields are ignored. Is that how it's intended to work? I am looking for a way to append a domain to unqualified user names based on the port that the client connected to. Like this: port 9110 - @test.com port 9111 - @other.com port 9112 - @third.com it looks like auth-default-realm does this, but you can only specify it once for the whole process. I know I could do this by running a separate copy of dovecot attached to each port in question, but I would like to do it all in one process if possible. Other questions I have, if I use the auth-default-realm: 1) does it happen before auth lookup I assume? 2) do I have to define the domain i use here as an auth-realm in addition to default?

Hello, I'm attempting to migrate from an existing dovecot .99 install to dovecot 1.0.rc15 on a fresh up to date CentOs 5.1. The search order is as follows. The search stops upon the first successful lookup. (...) o The user(a)domain.tld address, without address exten- sion, is looked up next. o Finally, the recipient @domain is looked up. --- Basicaly this allows to have separate users assigned addresses like j.doe(a)example.com (first account), j.smith(a)example.com (second account) and at the same time to have a "catch all" anything(a)example.com mailbox (for the administrator e.g.). What do I need it for? To have dovecot-lda working. Why? I want Sieve :) The test data may look as follows: account #1: + mail: j.doe(a)example.com + mailAlternateAddress: j.c.doe(a)example.com account #2: + mail: j.smith(a)example.com + mailAlternateAddress: j.t.smith(a)example.com account #3 (administrator): + mail: bofh(a)example.com + mailAlternateAddress: @example.com (means - anything possible) The filter I used is (more or less - for both pass_filter and user_filter): (|(mail=%u)(mailAlternateAddress=%u)(mailAlternateAddress=@%d)) Just for testing purposes I've stripped off some irrelevant data (like checking if the account is active), since that made the filter about 140 characters long ;) The trouble is when there're both a "catch all" and a true account that are linked to different accounts. As an example, if I try to send mail to "j.doe(a)example.com" I receive: dovecot: auth(default): ldap(j.doe(a)example.com): Multiple replies found for user Which is of course true, since the filter returns "account #2" and "account #3". What I'd like to get? I'd like to set the filter to: (|(mail=%u)(mailAlternateAddress=%u)) Where "%u" is expanded to "j.doe(a)example.com" during the first run Then, if dovecot can't find any user that would match this literaly it should retry the search operation, but now with "@example.com" as the "%u". I've tried to fiddle with the filter itself, but I see any reasonable way of doing it. I don't even know if it is possible at all. Could anyone give me a hint? Or maybe it's already on someone's whish list? [Dovecot] Gnus and dovecot time out

Could someone suggest what the solution here is? Dovecot is terminating the connection to Gnus after a certain period of activity. It's my own mail server so no need to worry about "hogging resources". Should/could Dovecot be configured to keep the connection alive, or should Gnus be programmed to automatically reopen the conneection? The current problem that one can not leave an IMAP group if the connection is cut by the server. [Dovecot] Multiple copies of a message

I have a problem and I don't know which part of the mail chain could be causing it, although dovecot does seem to be the most logical source. I get multiple copies of messages to my Inbox. I have just deleted 24 copies of a newsletter from Computer Shopper. The worst example I have seen of this had more than 90 copies. This doesn't happen to any subfolder of Inbox, just Inbox itself. The problem started about 10-14 days ago, on the old mail server (running Mandriva 2007.1). The new server runs CentOS and exhibits the same problem. I'd be interested in any comments, as my efforts to track it down have got nowhere. Anne

[Dovecot] Rename file opened for read-write -- cannot edit subscriptions

Howdy, Here is a problem with fix affecting dovecot-1.0.10 (and 1.1rc13). On a linux system's CIFS mounted filesystem, it is not possible to rename a file opened read-write: $ sleep 5 >> .subscriptions.lock & mv .subscriptions.lock .subscriptions mv: cannot move `.subscriptions.lock' to `.subscriptions': Text file busy This causes problems in editing subscriptions, as the new subscription list is still open for writing before it is renamed in: lib-storage/subscription-file/subscription-file.c line 169 in dovecot version 1.0.10 (and 1.1rc13) This is an unpatched linux 2.6.21-5, CIFS mounted filesystem from a windows 2003 sp2 server. The documentation for rename(2) indicates that it is allowed to return an error when the file is already opened, so perhaps the file should be closed before the replace. Should this be done in file_dotlock_replace (before line 672) generally? [Dovecot] Using Dovecot with nsswitch for LDAP on Solaris

Hello all, I'm having some issues configuring dovecot 1.0.10 on a Solaris 10 box, that uses LDAP¨for its accounts. The local accounts (in /etc/passwd) are authenticated properly and work as expected, but all accounts from the LDAP fail authentication. Those are declared for the system using PAM and NSS (/etc/pam.conf and /etc/nsswitch.conf are configured accordingly). Currently, there are WU-IMAP and Qpopper installed and working, and neither of them needed any special configuration to use the login, they're just using Unix auth. I tried various configurations, based on what I read in the wiki documentation, but nothing works, even the passwd userdb/passdb, which *should* if I understand correctly. Trying to use PAM in dovecot fails, too. Any idea what I'm doing wrong, or pointers to hints? Google returned little information about configuring Dovecot on Solaris, and none that was useful. [Dovecot] Using dovecot proxy as multi-account aggregator?

Good day. I am trying to build a rather weird setup. The basic idea is to have a relatively simple IMAP client and let dovecot do the actual connections. So far both the documentation and my trials on this front have been rather fruitless. The desired components: - 1 dovecot server, acting as a proxy - 1 master account - 1 client connection - 0 "real" user accounts, so no local mail storage at all - N real accounts, spread over different domains - mails from different remote accounts combined to the single client connection - outgoing server for mails selected by the address of the remote account Since the proxy setup can use name(a)domain.tld as destination user, it would appear that the setup is not impossible. Hence my two questions: 1) Is it possible? 2) If yes, how in the name of all that is good and holy do I configure that? And believe me, I am fully aware that for most setups a full-featured client or fetchmail would be the easier path. So maybe some of you guys, are able to answer to help me solve this: 1. I'd like to use userdb and passdb of Dovetcot to work with Windows AD. 2. Hi, I am working through setting up a virtual hosting system using Dovecot, Postfix and Postgres on a CentOS 5 box running an install of the dovecot-1.0-1.2.rc15.el5 RPM. The question I have is, given this password_query SELECT clause, which all return valid values from the database: user password domain can I use a %d in the WHERE clause of my user_query? [Dovecot] multiple ports, different characteristics

The wiki <http://wiki.dovecot.org/Iptables> leads me to believe that the only way to configure dovecot to listen for the same protocol on multiple ports is via external redirection (iptables or similar). Is that so, or can dovecot be directly configured to listen on multiple ports? Here's a concrete example of what I'm trying to accomplish. Our environment uses plaintext authentication, and so we force our users to use TLS for IMAP. For some internal connections (specifically with dovecot built-in proxying), we need non-TLS connections for IMAP. It's completely OK here if we need to listen on different ports for the two flavors of connections. Can dovecot be configured to handle this and/or do we need to run multiple instances of dovecot with different config files? Hi. Is there a way to deliver a message already marked as read. I would like to configure my MTA to deliver a copy of all sent messages to a folder named Sent in the user Maildir, I believe that it would be interesting to keep this folder always marked as readed. [Dovecot] viewing a subset of folders in dumb IMAP clients

I have several dozen IMAP folders (stored as Maildir++). When I'm on the go with my iPhone, I only want to see a few of them. My naive solution that didn't work: 1) create an alternate login that yields my existing permissions and mail folder, but stores its own version of metadata 2) configure the iPhone to use that login 3) subscribe to the folders I want I test-drove the Dovecot config in a webmail app and it worked exactly right, but it turns out the iPhone (running the latest, 1.1.3) apparently doesn't respect IMAP subscriptions. My world-weary, clunkier, but seemingly working solution: 1) have the alternate login yield my existing permissions, but a different mail folder and metadata 2) create that mail folder, make its cur/new/tmp symlinks to the real ones, and symlink in the other folders I care about Is this safe? And is there a more elegant way to do what I want? Thanks, - Amitai

Hello all, I am using dovecot with maildir storage. I want to share a inbox of one user with another user. I read the page http://wiki.dovecot.org/SharedMailboxes but it does not deal with inboxes. I tried a test of a non-inbox folder and it worked great. The inbox does not have a .inbox folder instead its kindof spread through the root of the mailbox. Should I create a folder say .shared-inbox with a symbolic link to cur new tmp in other-guys-mail-folder? What about index files, uid list, and keywords? Thanks

When I install an SSL certificate, I can't find a config option to set configure the Server Certificate Chain file... Is this not possible or can I do it another way? [Dovecot] More efficient Deleting of a whole folder (or Purging Trash)

Hi, I've straced a few dovecot processes after hitting purge on a large Trash folder (35,000 messages). It looks like it is going through each message, one by one, and removing (unlinking) each one. Is there not a more efficient way to do this? If Dovecot knows the whole folder is being deleted (ie a Trash purge), could it do something clever with the filesystem to just remove the whole folder? Incidently, the command that initially deleted those 35k messages to Trash took about 1 hour to complete on my server and effectively locked my account out for all that time. There were also an awlful lot of these output from my strace: nanosleep({0, 131475000}, NULL) = 0 lstat("/home/virtual/xxx.com/home/admin/Maildir/.Folders.Porter/dovecot-uidlist.lock", {st_mode=S_IFREG|0600, st_size=0, ...}) = 0 Not sure if there's much one can do about speeding up deleting a lot of messages though. My webmail client has a 'delete all messages' button for each folder. If there was an efficient IMAP command for deleting a whole folder that would be useful in those circumstances. Can some one please help w/this? Additionally is there a way to run mail_convert on the command line to try to sort out the arguments? I noticed the converts are .so and .a in /usr/local/lib/dovecot/ so I doubt it but it can not hurt to ask.

[Dovecot] Virtual Alias Forwarding

I'm having a problem with Dovecot and forwarding of aliases. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm using Postfix, Mysql, dovecot, amavis. mysql> SELECT * FROM alias; | address | goto | domain | created | modified | active | It seems from the logs that incoming mail is being delivered to the mailbox via dovecot. Mail gets to the correct mailbox (address field), however, if I change the destination mailbox (goto) in the alias table in mysql, the mail still goes to the main mailbox (address). mysql_virtual_alias_maps.cf looks to be configured correctly but I'm suspecting that dovecot is circumventing that file. I'll post maillog entry, dovecot-deliver.log entry, dovecot-mysql.conf, mysql_virtual_alias_maps.cf, and dovecot.conf below in case that helps. Thanks in advance for anything that helps me resolve this. Hello, I am sorry if I am writing to a wrong list because honestly I do not know where to write but I would like to be able to set up sa-learn via cron to learn from spam folder of a particular email account (via IMAP). Hi all, Over the past week our mail server which NFS mounts the /home directory for mail has been experiencing major load issues. When doing a 'top', it appeared that slapd was the culprit (we use LDAP for authentication), but after upgrading the system and updating ldap, the cpu usage for LDAP has gone down, but the load average as not. I'm using Maildir. Everything from /home is NFS mounted, and the structure looks like this: /home/USERNAME/Maildir We're doing about 300 email messages a minute right now to that server, which isn't that much. I'm at a loss of words right now as I do not know where to troubleshoot from here. I've come up with the following questions: 1) I've noticed that some of our users have 500mb Maildir folders some even have 3gb+ - would this cause the CPU to have such a high load? 2) Currently on the box there is about 120 POP3 connections and 40 IMAP connections. Could this be the issue? 3) When I first set up this server, I appended INDEX=MEMORY to the end of the mail_location line. Should I remove this? I wanted to either remove it or put it on the local machine to speed things up. Thanks to Marius, I've got this problem fixed! I don't know how or why, but selinux directory contexts have been altered during the update for everyone else on the system except myself (what makes it odd is that my user has the same group and permissions as everyone else). So what did the trick was to apply: chcon -t user_home_dir_t to each user's home, mail, .imap and INBOX directories. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction, Marius! I just upgraded a server from Courier-IMAP to Dovecot, and I'm seeing some odd behavior. It's probably the result of something I did wrong in my configuration, and I'm hoping someone will let me know the easy fix for it. I have rules set up in Apple Mail to move and copy messages to different folders, some of which are IMAP folders, others on my own system. With Courier-IMAP, the messages would get moved without a problem. With dovecot, that's not happening. Here's my dovecot config. Everything was working fine. Now I have 5.1 and its respective dovecot v1.0.rc15. Upon upgrading to RHEL5.1, dovecot no longer works correctly. The first thing I did after rewriting the config file for the updated version, was to check my own email. It works fine. However, no other user on the system can check his/hers. If I setenforce 0 (disable selinux), everything is working fine for everyone. If I disable selinux monitoring on dovecot (setsebool dovecot_disable_trans 1), nothing changes, which makes me think that something else is causing the problem. I do very much want to use selinux, however, I cannot figure out what the problem is and I have been trying for many hours. Can anyone help? Thanks, Ion

Hello, I have a problem with the trash plugin. i'm not English, but if i ave understand this http://wiki.dovecot.org/Plugins/Trash , if a mailbox is full (90% for example) and i want to delete a mail, the plugin delete a mail in mailbox specified in a file ... [Dovecot] Howto set mail_location for system users over LDAP?

In parallel to /etc/passwd I do have my system users in LDAP. I want to store their messages in /srv/mail/state-of-mind/<username>. Dovecot has been configured to retrieve the extra field mail to override the mail_location setting. I can see in the log it retrieves the correct information as long as I run Dovecot deliver as Postfix service 'dovecot' as shown in section "Virtual users" <http://wiki.dovecot.org/LDA/Postfix>. However if I use deliver as specified for "System users" it ignores the LDAP settings and delivers messages to my users $HOME directory as specified in /etc/passwd. Is this correct behaviour? What do I need to do to use the Postfix $mailbox_command _and_ have Dovecot deliver honor my LDAP settings? [Dovecot] Thunderbird Problem - What causes this?

Strange problem and I'm not sure what's causing it. I'm using IMAP. A new message arives in the inbox. I see it displayed in the message list in bold. I click on the message and it looks like it's reading it by the previous message that was in the window remains and the new message is still bold (unread). However I can then click on an old message and then click on the new message again and it reads. I have also seen Thunderbird be in a somewhat unresponsive state. You can click on messages and they don't read. But Shutting down Thunderbird and restarting it make it responsive again. Has anyone seen this?

[Dovecot] proxy configuration

Before I spend some time experimenting with what might be impossible, maybe someone can just tell me (either "how" or that it's impossible). I'd like to get perdition out of my environment (mainly to have one less moving part in my architecture). I'm looking at dovecot's built-in proxying. In my setup, I don't have dedicated front-end machines. A user can connect to any server, but their mail files live on one particular machine. I'd like to transparently proxy them from whatever machine they happen to hit to their home machine. Except for the "proxy_maybe" feature advertised for dovecot 1.1, I don't see a surefire way to do this. Has anyone done it, or can anyone say for sure that it can't reasonably be done until "proxy_maybe"? Hi, I'm new to Dovecot -- migrating from Cyrus. Version and config: # 1.1.beta14: /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf protocols: imaps login_dir: /var/run/dovecot/login login_executable: /usr/libexec/dovecot/imap-login mail_location: dbox:/data/mail/%u auth default: passdb: driver: pam args: * userdb: driver: passwd Linux 2.6.22-gentoo-r10 x86_64 GNU/Linux I have chosen dbox as mailbox format as it is claimed to be the best performing -- and performance is the reason I'd like to migrate away form Cyrus. I'm aware that dbox might not be 100% mature, but I'm good at doing backups. Anyway, so far I have the following problems: - Greyed out Inbox After creating a new user and connecting to that account with Thunderbird the first time, the INBOX folder is greyed out and in italic. Restarting Thunderbird 3-4 times seems to fix the problem. Google suggests that other people have seen the same, but they never found a solution. - After creating sub folders they are not displayed, I need to manually subscribe to them after creation. - When "Trash" contains folders, Thunderbird is unable to "Empty Trash". While the folder is removed from Thunderbird's folder tree, it's there again after a restart of Thunderbird. - Deleted folders are never deleted from the file system. I'm not sure if this is intended with dbox. - Moving folders via drag & drop does not work, it just does nothing. So basically nothing besides reading existing mails seems to work reliable. My basic questions now is, are those problems related to dbox, or to Dovecot and Thunderbird in general? -- Best regards, Hannes Dorbath

We also have some virtual users using an SQL db. [Dovecot] Dovecot LDA (deliver) stopped working

Hello, One day a week or so ago, a server that's Postifx w/ Local users, dovecot w/ LDA decided to stop working. The only thing that stopped is the LDA portion, the rest all works fine. I also posted to the postfix mailing list yesterday but wasn't able to debug any further. Here's the situation: if I use mailbox_command to point to deliver, postfix will always put the message in the deferred queue. However, if I run deliver from the command line, it works fine. I've recompiled Dovecot and Postfix cleanly and reinstalled a few times to ensure permissions are OK. It's not a virtual setup, so I do NOT have setuid root on the deliver binary. Postfix people suggested placing a wrapper script for mailbox_command, which I did, and have it log to a text file, so I do know that deliver is being called. However, although I have LDA debug logging on, and it DID log prior to this, when postfix supposedly calls deliver, dovecot does NOT log anything. It DOES however log if I call deliver from any account (root or not) from the command line (ls / | /path/to/deliver -d localaccountname). Any way I can debug this further? I would assume that deliver would log something even if it's called, but it appears that it does not. My postfix related details are here: http://marc.info/?l=postfix-users&m=120119147917409&w=2 I followed the postfix/lda wiki (http://wiki.dovecot.org/LDA/Postfix) when setting it up, and it worked perfectly for months. I did indeed only have to change mailbox_command and it worked (I'm also using sasl auth, but that should be unrelated). Obviously something happened on my system, but I would assume recompiling/reinstalling would reset things. Nothing in the config files for postfix or dovecot changed, from what I can see, as generally I am the only one making changes. Thanks, --falz
