Hi, I'm setting up dovecot pop3 deamon for a small set of mailbox. I want to be able to set a small set of mailbox simply, so I've used "passdb passwd-file" + virtual mailboxes with "userdb static". My problem is that it seems that postfix accept and create mailbox for every address I post. It is configured to use local delivery through dovecot's deliver. How do I force deliver to retrun an error if the destination is not defined in the passwd-file? The doc said that "userdb static" should do a lookup automatically. But no luke for me. Is it really a deliver problem, or a postfix configuration problem? Any, hint? [Dovecot] High availability strategies?

Anyone here trying any "high availability" strategies for mail servers? (Ralph what do you do?) I am reading up a little on DRBD + OCFS for a master/master setup but this doesn't seem to address how to avoid having a single master proxy process (assuming that we are running on rented equip and don't have ability to shift IP addresses around servers). It appears to be possible to play games with DNS and short expiries, but this causes extra DNS traffic for the general case when we are up and running? We had some bad ram in a server recently and it's the worst possible situation. Server locking up, downtime, but it's not easy to repro and fix... (only happens every few days. Memcheck found nothing...) How could we redesign our setup to be resilient against this? (How does Google or Yahoo do it?) For reference I am using vservers to host dovecot and this is working very nicely and makes it real simple to chuck the config onto another host and test things (upgrades, etc). Highly recommended. Any suggestions (from people who have tried stuff)? Cheers Ed W

Hi, I'm testing dovecot 1.1.beta14 on two debian etch with drbd+ocfs2[active/active], I use qmail+vpopmail(userdb) and three front-end with openbsd 4.2 with dovecot 1.1.beta14 as proxy with passdb sql through vpopmail database. Is posible to add logs into vpopmail.vlog from proxys?, like "update vlog blah blah..." or in other sql database? I tried with post login scripting but I don't recibe any variable. [Dovecot] IMAP quotas - Reasonable size?

Hello... I'm setting up dovecot (IMAP only) at an ad-agency (Lots of big files attached to mails). I'm wondering... What would you consider to be reasonable mail quota? My concern is, that some client-software will have problems with huge mailboxes. I was going to give everyone 2GB, but some users demand 15GB+. Does dovecot "prefer" mailboxes within a certain size? Hello, Im having problems getting Dovecot to read the quota info from MySQL. My current dovecot.conf file is below. [Dovecot] NULL for password and proxy fields

In the course of experimenting with getting dovecot proxying to work, I took a guess at two things. These work fine for me, but now I'm wondering if they are "as designed" or just a lucky accident that might stop working in the future. (I'm using dovecot 1.0.rc17, which is the included version in Ubuntu Feisty. (I am aware that some details change in v1.1, and I'm not worried about that right now.) http://wiki.dovecot.org/PasswordDatabase/ExtraFields/Proxy 1. The wiki page says about password forwarding, "Make sure that the authentication succeeds with any given password. You can do this by using empty passwords." I didn't know exactly now to interpret that last part, so I tried returning NULL as the value of the "password" field for proxy cases. That seems to make dovecot skip the password check will forwarding the user-submitted password to the proxy target host. Is that the intent of that part of that wiki page? 2. It looks like any value at all for the "proxy" field in the passdb lookup turns proxying on. The one exception is a value of NULL for "proxy", in which case proxying is not turned on and proxy-related other fields are ignored. Is that how it's intended to work? If someone can give and informend confirmation that this is as-designed, I can add some clarifying remarks on those points on the wiki page. [Dovecot] appending domain based on port

I am looking for a way to append a domain to unqualified user names based on the port that the client connected to. Like this: port 9110 - @test.com port 9111 - @other.com port 9112 - @third.com it looks like auth-default-realm does this, but you can only specify it once for the whole process. I know I could do this by running a separate copy of dovecot attached to each port in question, but I would like to do it all in one process if possible. Other questions I have, if I use the auth-default-realm: 1) does it happen before auth lookup I assume? 2) do I have to define the domain i use here as an auth-realm in addition to default?

Hello, I'm attempting to migrate from an existing dovecot .99 install to dovecot 1.0.rc15 on a fresh up to date CentOs 5.1. I am trying to tell Dovecot deliver to use $mail_location as the location to store mail for system users. From the docs I've read <http://wiki.dovecot.org/MailLocation> I believe this is possible, but mail to my system users always gets delivered to their /home/<USERNAME> homedirectory. What do I need it for? To have dovecot-lda working. Why? As an example, if I try to send mail to "j.doe(a)example.com" I receive: dovecot: auth(default): ldap(j.doe(a)example.com): Multiple replies found for user Which is of course true, since the filter returns "account #2" and "account #3". What I'd like to get? I'd like to set the filter to: (|(mail=%u)(mailAlternateAddress=%u)) Where "%u" is expanded to "j.doe(a)example.com" during the first run Then, if dovecot can't find any user that would match this literaly it should retry the search operation, but now with "@example.com" as the "%u". I've tried to fiddle with the filter itself, but I see any reasonable way of doing it. I don't even know if it is possible at all. Could anyone give me a hint? Or maybe it's already on someone's whish list? [Dovecot] Gnus and dovecot time out

Could someone suggest what the solution here is? Dovecot is terminating the connection to Gnus after a certain period of activity. It's my own mail server so no need to worry about "hogging resources". Should/could Dovecot be configured to keep the connection alive, or should Gnus be programmed to automatically reopen the conneection? The current problem that one can not leave an IMAP group if the connection is cut by the server. [Dovecot] Multiple copies of a message

I have a problem and I don't know which part of the mail chain could be causing it, although dovecot does seem to be the most logical source. I get multiple copies of messages to my Inbox. I have just deleted 24 copies of a newsletter from Computer Shopper. The worst example I have seen of this had more than 90 copies. This doesn't happen to any subfolder of Inbox, just Inbox itself. The problem started about 10-14 days ago, on the old mail server (running Mandriva 2007.1). The new server runs CentOS and exhibits the same problem. I'd be interested in any comments, as my efforts to track it down have got nowhere. Anne

Howdy, Here is a problem with fix affecting dovecot-1.0.10 (and 1.1rc13). On a linux system's CIFS mounted filesystem, it is not possible to rename a file opened read-write: $ sleep 5 >> .subscriptions.lock & mv .subscriptions.lock .subscriptions mv: cannot move `.subscriptions.lock' to `.subscriptions': Text file busy This causes problems in editing subscriptions, as the new subscription list is still open for writing before it is renamed in: lib-storage/subscription-file/subscription-file.c line 169 in dovecot version 1.0.10 (and 1.1rc13) This is an unpatched linux 2.6.21-5, CIFS mounted filesystem from a windows 2003 sp2 server. The documentation for rename(2) indicates that it is allowed to return an error when the file is already opened, so perhaps the file should be closed before the replace. Should this be done in file_dotlock_replace (before line 672) generally? [Dovecot] Using Dovecot with nsswitch for LDAP on Solaris

Hello all, I'm having some issues configuring dovecot 1.0.10 on a Solaris 10 box, that uses LDAP¨for its accounts. The local accounts (in /etc/passwd) are authenticated properly and work as expected, but all accounts from the LDAP fail authentication. Those are declared for the system using PAM and NSS (/etc/pam.conf and /etc/nsswitch.conf are configured accordingly). Currently, there are WU-IMAP and Qpopper installed and working, and neither of them needed any special configuration to use the login, they're just using Unix auth. I tried various configurations, based on what I read in the wiki documentation, but nothing works, even the passwd userdb/passdb, which *should* if I understand correctly. Trying to use PAM in dovecot fails, too. Any idea what I'm doing wrong, or pointers to hints? Google returned little information about configuring Dovecot on Solaris, and none that was useful. [Dovecot] Using dovecot proxy as multi-account aggregator?

Good day. I am trying to build a rather weird setup. The basic idea is to have a relatively simple IMAP client and let dovecot do the actual connections. So far both the documentation and my trials on this front have been rather fruitless. The desired components: - 1 dovecot server, acting as a proxy - 1 master account - 1 client connection - 0 "real" user accounts, so no local mail storage at all - N real accounts, spread over different domains - mails from different remote accounts combined to the single client connection - outgoing server for mails selected by the address of the remote account Since the proxy setup can use name(a)domain.tld as destination user, it would appear that the setup is not impossible. Hence my two questions: 1) Is it possible? 2) If yes, how in the name of all that is good and holy do I configure that? And believe me, I am fully aware that for most setups a full-featured client or fetchmail would be the easier path. Hello, I'm almost sure that all topics and problems mentioned below were separately posted to this list already. But after spending 4 days on searching, I did'n find a compilation similar to my case. So maybe some of you guys, are able to answer to help me solve this: 1. I'd like to use userdb and passdb of Dovetcot to work with Windows AD. 2. I have to use them both because I'd like to use LDA to serve for my Postfix. 3. I DO NOT want tou use any external programs (ie PAM) to talk to AD server. 4. I was able to make my system partially running - I CAN bind to AD database, and confirm user/password. 5. I want to get follownig attributes: home directory (OK, I could put it statically), uid/gid (OK, it could be static too) and MAIL QUOTA (my users have different values - no 'statics'). Hi, I am working through setting up a virtual hosting system using Dovecot, Postfix and Postgres on a CentOS 5 box running an install of the dovecot-1.0-1.2.rc15.el5 RPM. The question I have is, given this password_query SELECT clause, which all return valid values from the database: user password domain can I use a %d in the WHERE clause of my user_query? [Dovecot] multiple ports, different characteristics

The wiki <http://wiki.dovecot.org/Iptables> leads me to believe that the only way to configure dovecot to listen for the same protocol on multiple ports is via external redirection (iptables or similar). Is that so, or can dovecot be directly configured to listen on multiple ports? Here's a concrete example of what I'm trying to accomplish. Our environment uses plaintext authentication, and so we force our users to use TLS for IMAP. For some internal connections (specifically with dovecot built-in proxying), we need non-TLS connections for IMAP. It's completely OK here if we need to listen on different ports for the two flavors of connections. Can dovecot be configured to handle this and/or do we need to run multiple instances of dovecot with different config files? Hi. Is there a way to deliver a message already marked as read. I would like to configure my MTA to deliver a copy of all sent messages to a folder named Sent in the user Maildir, I believe that it would be interesting to keep this folder always marked as readed. [Dovecot] viewing a subset of folders in dumb IMAP clients

I have several dozen IMAP folders (stored as Maildir++). When I'm on the go with my iPhone, I only want to see a few of them. My naive solution that didn't work: 1) create an alternate login that yields my existing permissions and mail folder, but stores its own version of metadata 2) configure the iPhone to use that login 3) subscribe to the folders I want I test-drove the Dovecot config in a webmail app and it worked exactly right, but it turns out the iPhone (running the latest, 1.1.3) apparently doesn't respect IMAP subscriptions. My world-weary, clunkier, but seemingly working solution: 1) have the alternate login yield my existing permissions, but a different mail folder and metadata 2) create that mail folder, make its cur/new/tmp symlinks to the real ones, and symlink in the other folders I care about Is this safe? And is there a more elegant way to do what I want? Thanks, - Amitai

Hello all, I am using dovecot with maildir storage. I want to share a inbox of one user with another user. I read the page http://wiki.dovecot.org/SharedMailboxes but it does not deal with inboxes. I tried a test of a non-inbox folder and it worked great. The inbox does not have a .inbox folder instead its kindof spread through the root of the mailbox. Should I create a folder say .shared-inbox with a symbolic link to cur new tmp in other-guys-mail-folder? What about index files, uid list, and keywords? Thanks

[Dovecot] More efficient Deleting of a whole folder (or Purging Trash)

Hi, I've straced a few dovecot processes after hitting purge on a large Trash folder (35,000 messages). It looks like it is going through each message, one by one, and removing (unlinking) each one. Is there not a more efficient way to do this? If Dovecot knows the whole folder is being deleted (ie a Trash purge), could it do something clever with the filesystem to just remove the whole folder? Incidently, the command that initially deleted those 35k messages to Trash took about 1 hour to complete on my server and effectively locked my account out for all that time. There were also an awlful lot of these output from my strace: nanosleep({0, 131475000}, NULL) = 0 lstat("/home/virtual/xxx.com/home/admin/Maildir/.Folders.Porter/dovecot-uidlist.lock", {st_mode=S_IFREG|0600, st_size=0, ...}) = 0 Not sure if there's much one can do about speeding up deleting a lot of messages though. My webmail client has a 'delete all messages' button for each folder. If there was an efficient IMAP command for deleting a whole folder that would be useful in those circumstances. Can some one please help w/this? Additionally is there a way to run mail_convert on the command line to try to sort out the arguments? I noticed the converts are .so and .a in /usr/local/lib/dovecot/ so I doubt it but it can not hurt to ask.

[Dovecot] Virtual Alias Forwarding

I'm having a problem with Dovecot and forwarding of aliases. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm using Postfix, Mysql, dovecot, amavis. mysql> SELECT * FROM alias; | address | goto | domain | created | modified | active | It seems from the logs that incoming mail is being delivered to the mailbox via dovecot. Mail gets to the correct mailbox (address field), however, if I change the destination mailbox (goto) in the alias table in mysql, the mail still goes to the main mailbox (address). mysql_virtual_alias_maps.cf looks to be configured correctly but I'm suspecting that dovecot is circumventing that file. [Dovecot] Load average on machine 400+

Hi all, Over the past week our mail server which NFS mounts the /home directory for mail has been experiencing major load issues. When doing a 'top', it appeared that slapd was the culprit (we use LDAP for authentication), but after upgrading the system and updating ldap, the cpu usage for LDAP has gone down, but the load average as not. I'm using Maildir. Everything from /home is NFS mounted, and the structure looks like this: /home/USERNAME/Maildir We're doing about 300 email messages a minute right now to that server, which isn't that much. I'm at a loss of words right now as I do not know where to troubleshoot from here. I've come up with the following questions: 1) I've noticed that some of our users have 500mb Maildir folders some even have 3gb+ - would this cause the CPU to have such a high load? 2) Currently on the box there is about 120 POP3 connections and 40 IMAP connections. Could this be the issue? 3) When I first set up this server, I appended INDEX=MEMORY to the end of the mail_location line. Should I remove this? I wanted to either remove it or put it on the local machine to speed things up. Thanks to Marius, I've got this problem fixed! I don't know how or why, but selinux directory contexts have been altered during the update for everyone else on the system except myself (what makes it odd is that my user has the same group and permissions as everyone else). So what did the trick was to apply: chcon -t user_home_dir_t to each user's home, mail, .imap and INBOX directories. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction, Marius! I just upgraded a server from Courier-IMAP to Dovecot, and I'm seeing some odd behavior. It's probably the result of something I did wrong in my configuration, and I'm hoping someone will let me know the easy fix for it. I have rules set up in Apple Mail to move and copy messages to different folders, some of which are IMAP folders, others on my own system. With Courier-IMAP, the messages would get moved without a problem. With dovecot, that's not happening. Here's my dovecot config. Hello to everyone on the list, I have upgraded my RHEL4 to RHEL5.1 yesterday (all updates have been applied to it as well). I used to have dovecot v0.99.11 on the old system. Everything was working fine. Now I have 5.1 and its respective dovecot v1.0.rc15. Upon upgrading to RHEL5.1, dovecot no longer works correctly. The first thing I did after rewriting the config file for the updated version, was to check my own email. It works fine. However, no other user on the system can check his/hers. [Dovecot] Howto set mail_location for system users over LDAP?

In parallel to /etc/passwd I do have my system users in LDAP. I want to store their messages in /srv/mail/state-of-mind/<username>. Dovecot has been configured to retrieve the extra field mail to override the mail_location setting. I can see in the log it retrieves the correct information as long as I run Dovecot deliver as Postfix service 'dovecot' as shown in section "Virtual users" <http://wiki.dovecot.org/LDA/Postfix>. However if I use deliver as specified for "System users" it ignores the LDAP settings and delivers messages to my users $HOME directory as specified in /etc/passwd. Is this correct behaviour? What do I need to do to use the Postfix $mailbox_command _and_ have Dovecot deliver honor my LDAP settings? [Dovecot] Thunderbird Problem - What causes this?

Strange problem and I'm not sure what's causing it. I'm using IMAP. A new message arives in the inbox. I see it displayed in the message list in bold. I click on the message and it looks like it's reading it by the previous message that was in the window remains and the new message is still bold (unread). However I can then click on an old message and then click on the new message again and it reads. I have also seen Thunderbird be in a somewhat unresponsive state. You can click on messages and they don't read. But Shutting down Thunderbird and restarting it make it responsive again. Has anyone seen this?

Before I spend some time experimenting with what might be impossible, maybe someone can just tell me (either "how" or that it's impossible). I'd like to get perdition out of my environment (mainly to have one less moving part in my architecture). I'm looking at dovecot's built-in proxying. In my setup, I don't have dedicated front-end machines. A user can connect to any server, but their mail files live on one particular machine. I'd like to transparently proxy them from whatever machine they happen to hit to their home machine. Except for the "proxy_maybe" feature advertised for dovecot 1.1, I don't see a surefire way to do this. Has anyone done it, or can anyone say for sure that it can't reasonably be done until "proxy_maybe"? Hi, I'm new to Dovecot -- migrating from Cyrus. Version and config: # 1.1.beta14: /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf protocols: imaps login_dir: /var/run/dovecot/login login_executable: /usr/libexec/dovecot/imap-login mail_location: dbox:/data/mail/%u auth default: passdb: driver: pam args: * userdb: driver: passwd Linux 2.6.22-gentoo-r10 x86_64 GNU/Linux I have chosen dbox as mailbox format as it is claimed to be the best performing -- and performance is the reason I'd like to migrate away form Cyrus. I'm aware that dbox might not be 100% mature, but I'm good at doing backups. Anyway, so far I have the following problems: - Greyed out Inbox After creating a new user and connecting to that account with Thunderbird the first time, the INBOX folder is greyed out and in italic. Restarting Thunderbird 3-4 times seems to fix the problem. Google suggests that other people have seen the same, but they never found a solution. - After creating sub folders they are not displayed, I need to manually subscribe to them after creation. - When "Trash" contains folders, Thunderbird is unable to "Empty Trash". While the folder is removed from Thunderbird's folder tree, it's there again after a restart of Thunderbird. - Deleted folders are never deleted from the file system. I'm not sure if this is intended with dbox. - Moving folders via drag & drop does not work, it just does nothing. So basically nothing besides reading existing mails seems to work reliable. My basic questions now is, are those problems related to dbox, or to Dovecot and Thunderbird in general? -- Best regards, Hannes Dorbath

[Dovecot] Dovecot LDA (deliver) stopped working

Hello, One day a week or so ago, a server that's Postifx w/ Local users, dovecot w/ LDA decided to stop working. The only thing that stopped is the LDA portion, the rest all works fine. I also posted to the postfix mailing list yesterday but wasn't able to debug any further. Here's the situation: if I use mailbox_command to point to deliver, postfix will always put the message in the deferred queue. However, if I run deliver from the command line, it works fine. I've recompiled Dovecot and Postfix cleanly and reinstalled a few times to ensure permissions are OK. It's not a virtual setup, so I do NOT have setuid root on the deliver binary. Postfix people suggested placing a wrapper script for mailbox_command, which I did, and have it log to a text file, so I do know that deliver is being called. However, although I have LDA debug logging on, and it DID log prior to this, when postfix supposedly calls deliver, dovecot does NOT log anything. It DOES however log if I call deliver from any account (root or not) from the command line (ls / | /path/to/deliver -d localaccountname). Any way I can debug this further? I would assume that deliver would log something even if it's called, but it appears that it does not. My postfix related details are here: http://marc.info/?l=postfix-users&m=120119147917409&w=2 I followed the postfix/lda wiki (http://wiki.dovecot.org/LDA/Postfix) when setting it up, and it worked perfectly for months. I did indeed only have to change mailbox_command and it worked (I'm also using sasl auth, but that should be unrelated). Obviously something happened on my system, but I would assume recompiling/reinstalling would reset things. Nothing in the config files for postfix or dovecot changed, from what I can see, as generally I am the only one making changes. Thanks, --falz

[Dovecot] Capturing credentials for imap sync

Hi List All the imap sync apps I could find requires the username /password credentails to be known before a sync occurs. I have Dovecot using ldap acting as a nearline backup mail server to MS Exchange. Every hour imapsync syncs mail between Exchange and Dovecot. This all works fine becuase the users credentials are known, but when new users are added I would like the process to work seemless like this: The user is added to the Active Directory. The mail client is configured with 2 accounts with identical credentials, one of which is connected to Dovecot. When the new client connects to dovecot, the credentials are captured and stored so that imapsync can use it. This If there is another way this can be done with dovecot, could I please be enlighten. I have read the doco on migration but I am not quite migrating but more replicating. Thank you

Hello, I have a question about the way Dovecot limits file system access. Currently we're using Dovecot 1.0.5 (Solaris 10). In some cases users have a symbolic link like "z: -> /" in their mail directory. I'm setting up a replacement mail server on a CentOS 5.1 box. The dovecot version is 1.0.rc15. Whats a good antispam solution? I am using sendmail and dovecot 1.1. I came across dovecot's antispam plugin, but it seems it does not support 1.1 yet. I am also looking for something non-perl based. I am already doing some greylisting with sendmail milter. Any other good suggestions? If not, I guess I might have to downgrade back to 1.0 dovecot. Thanks

[Dovecot] Is there a way to limit multiple POP3 connections?

Hi all, Please correct me if I'm going about this the wrong way. We currently have a 3 system Mail server set up - two machines are the load balanced frontends running Dovecot and Postfix, and the third machine is our NFS. Over the past 4 months or so, I've tweaked and optimized our mail servers, and we receive roughly 3 million emails a day combined through this setup. Sometimes, the IO Wait is horrible on the load balanced servers - it can get up into the 80-90% range sometimes - it's usually when a lot of email is being passed, or there are a lot of POP3 and IMAP connections. One item which I believe to be hurting I/O performance is the fact I used a RAID 10 setup using SATA II drives on an LSI Logic SATA I controller, in 32 bit mode. Until we rebuild our mail setup (which may be another year down the road), I want to make sure these servers are optimized to the fullest just in case we get heavy I/O usage, it doesn't slow down if at all possible. One thing I noticed is that when issuing a 'ps aux | grep -i pop' or 'ps aux | grep -i imap' I see the same username 2,3,4,5 times, sometimes more. When issuing a 'tail -f /var/log/dovecot.log' I notice that some users log into POP3 every 3 seconds, sometimes sooner. Without upsetting the customer, is there anything I can do on my end to disallow people logging into POP3 multiple times at once? Any tips on this is very much appreciated. Thanks in advance. I think sieve vacation is cutting off the last line of the vacation message, is this a known problem? vacation addresses: "john(a)example.com" "not here now" Would return an empty message, changing it to: vacation addresses: "john(a)example.com" "not here now have a nice day" And it would send a message with only "not here now" in it, but not "have a nice day". Unfortunately I don't any more have absolutely reliable information available on the Dovecot version that was the last one I had on FC6, but I guess it has been 1.0.3 (I found it from a FC6 repo right now). Currently, Fedora 8 has version 1.0.7 that comes as binary rpm from Fedora repos. So, the problem: I had set up an authentication system using mysql database. I tried the database authentication with similar conf there, it did work. So, is there an essential (intentional) change in sql configuration between 1.0.rc15 (and obviously 1.0.3) to 1.0.7, or should I start finding the problem from incorrectly built binary of 1.0.7? I have a few clients that have more than one user in the same mailbox. I have my setup using fctrl for mailbox and index locking. My mail is stored on a network file system (gluster) and my indexes are stored on the local drive. Hello, Using Dovecot's deliver MDA, all mails are stored with the line "From <sender> <date>" appended. When forwarding these mails as attachements, the recipients get the source code. When Postfix delivers emails directly in the Maildirs, this first line is not appended, and there is no problem when forwarding the mails. Why is this line appended by deliver ? Is there a way to remove it ? Or is there something else I can do to avoid this forwarding problem. I'm using Dovecot 1.0.rc15 from Debian Etch. Forgive me, if this has been previously discussed. I researched as best I could. I couldn't find anyone mentioning it. Please treat me as a newbie. I've recently set up postfix, amavisd-new/SpamAssassin, and dovecot. All three utilize a user database in a MySQL db (on the same host). So far, so good. The problem: I wanted amavisd-new to deliver an e-mail above the "$sa_tag2_level_deflt" to the spam mailbox inside each user account. To accomplish this, I've instituted (best as I can tell) "plus addressing." The idea, if I have this correct, is that if a spam message is being sent to "<user>@<domain>.<tld>", amavisd-new will change the receiving address to "<user>+spam@<domain>.<tld>". The "+spam" will translate to the mailbox named "spam" within the structure of "<user>"'s mailbox. I think the important lines from the amavisd-new config are: @addr_extension_spam_maps = ('spam'); $recipient_delimiter = '+'; Long story short, (too late) the e-mails are being delivered, but to a completely new mailbox called "<user>+spam". For example, when I list the directory "<domain>.<tld>", I now see two mailboxes (as opposed to one): "<user>" and "<user>+spam". Is there something I need to configure within dovecot to have it recognize "plus addressing", or should it do so by default? I'm certain I've just missed something really simple. Hi, I'm testing a dovecot installation using thunderbird as imap client. The first user I configured has regolar folders: Drafts, Sent and Trash, and thunderbirs shows each one with its icon. The second user shows these folders with a standard icon, and I'm not able to save email in sent. I cann't understand why there is this difference, and how dovecot manage these folder. [Dovecot] MIME Decoding Problem

I am having a recurring problem with Dovecot 1.0.8 failing to MIME-decode certain messages. The client is Mulberry 4.0.8. The messages causing the problem seem to be MIME messages with "no parts". I.e. the message has some MIME encoding, but is just included as the message body. The kind of effect I will see is a proliferation of untranslated =xx codes, or in some cases an untranslated base64 block. I.e. I see the raw text from the message body with no MIME decoding at all. When this problem happens, if I close the folder, ditch the .imap directory on the server for this folder, and reopen the folder, the problem has gone away, I can view the message just fine. So, I don't believe it's a client problem. (And Mulberry is probably the most IMAP-knowledgeable client out there ...) We are setting up a Dovecot over a pair of NFS which mirrored with DRBD +Heartbeat, under Debian Etch AMD64 with Kernel 2.6.22-5. The problem was slow header downloading rate. We had tried to use postal to inject 500 emails which are under 5KB each, but when ever we start up Mail.app, Thunderbird or even OE6, the header download rate is terrible slow. Its look like a few sec for just 1 header download from the strace of the dovecot process, sometime, it maybe longer and this leading to the MUA hang. Hello list, I am currently playing around with a virtual domain/virtual user setup and thanks to the documentation on both the Dovecot and the Postfix websites things are going swimmingly (apart from an oddity I will post separately about). On trying things out with different newly created virtual users I wondered if it was possible for Dovecot to create certain IMAP folders on the first login of the user? So that folders such "Drafts", "Sent" and "Trash" are created automatically for each new user (upon login). Or is this a job for the mail client, or for the admin who creates the new users? TIA! Hi, sorry but I'm new to dovecot and this list and don't know how to proceed with my dovecot installation. I was trying to set up an Mailserver with Postfix, Dovecot and PostgreSQL. Everything was working fine till I wanted to integrate quota support. I believe I have everything working correctly and have tested both the SASL portion and POP authentication through telnet and all works as expected, with one exception. [Dovecot] Problem downloading mail with "large" attachment using Thunderbird....

We have a user that is using Thunderbird on Windows to read mail over IMAP and it works ok, except for downloading mail with "large" attachment.. When opening a mail with a attachment with a size of 14-15MB, TB downloads the attachment seemingly ok, but TB stops when reaching 99%. After TB has stopped, if the user tries to select another mail, TB just hangs and it has to be closed and started again to work again... I have checked the dovecot log, but I can't find anything there... We have also tried to create a log in TB but everything looks ok there also... Is there a known problem with TB and "large" attachment or does anyone know how to fix this, if possible? Hi, I'm working on a system that have about 350K e-mail users and 100k users that uses maildrop scripts to make filters on their delivery. So, changing scripts by hand can't be a choice. I "googled" so much and I wasn't able to find any script that converts maildrop scripts to sieve. Does anyone knows where can I find it? [Dovecot] Squirrel Mail (unknown date) in subject and zero size of messages shown

Hello, I'm having the following problems with a Squirrelmail and Dovecot. with option SERVER SIDE SORTING in Squirrel, only the first page with e-mails is shown in user's inbox, the mails in all the next pages are listed with subject: "(unknown date)" and size 0. The other similar problem, independent from that option (SERVER SIDE SORTING) is: when THREAD VIEW is chosen, we have the same behavior, normal first page and damaged all the others. with option SERVER SIDE SORTING = FASE, and UNTHREADED, everything is OK Has anyone seen this behavior, any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance :) P.S. Squirrel's version is 1.4.7 and Dovecot is 1.0-stable

[Dovecot] Using deliver from Getmail?

Hello list, a quick question: can I use Dovecot's LDA "deliver" as a destination in Getmail? I.e.: [destination] type = MDA_external path = /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/deliver arguments = ("-d", "username",) Or is deliver not supposed to be called this way? What I'd like to do is use deliver in the same way I would have used procmail ages ago. Getmail retrieves the mail messages, filters them according to the filter sections set up and then puts them in the final destination as noted above. Of course I would like to have deliver honour my .dovecot.sieve sieve script. My first tries have not been very successful, all messages retrieved in this way are put in the top level INBOX, not being sieved. I also got this error message, but I am not sure how it is related: Jan 14 16:08:04 localhost deliver(username): net_connect(/usr/local/var/run/dovecot/auth-master) failed: Permission denied Does my user need any special permissions to use the LDA? My interest in algorithms has also grown a bit recently. I'm thinking about majoring in CS / algorithmics (as well as biochemistry / possibly bioinformatics). This should only be good for Dovecot's performance in future. :) Pretty much the same things are in TODO for v1.1.rc1 as there were in beta13. But there are quite a lot of other changes: - Added proxy_maybe setting. If the returned IP/port/user points to ourself, log in normally. Otherwise proxy to the IP. - Added quota_exceeded_message setting for quota plugin. Add it to plugin {} for global, or protocol lda {} for deliver-only. - mysql: default_file and default_group settings (by Luca Longinotti) - Timeout handling rewritten using a priority queue (heap). Dovecot should now be able to handle lots of timeouts quite fast. - Using the new timeout changes several places in code have been changed from iterate-through-objects-in-one-timeout to timeout-per-object. This means that there are no longer timeouts triggering every couple of seconds for no reason. dovecot master and dovecot-auth processes haven't been changed yet. - deliver without -d parameter: if $USER and $HOME exists, don't do getpwuid() lookup. - Maildir locking fix - Index file performance fixes - Don't allow RENAME box box/child. It breaks some clients (which do it themselves..) and there's really no reason to allow it. - Quota warnings were broken - Maildir quota didn't use limits from maildirsize if no quota rules were specified I'm also thinking about getting rid of the "time moved backwards" error and change it to a warning. First I'd just need to fix the timeout handling code to handle time jumps and then verify that all timestamp comparisons can handle it correctly. Also besides warning about "time moved backwards" it should warn about "time moved forwards a lot" where "lot" is probably something like a minute. That could cause problems with dotlocks just the same as time moving backwards.

Hi All, it's my first post in this list. I'm running dovecot 1.0.rc15 on my Debian Etch box. It's working very well but I faced a problem with Vacation using Sieve. :-( In fact, after well configuring the system I dont't receive the vacation message, and in the log I found: deliver(my(a)address.test): "2008-01-19 12:05:32 "Info: cmusieve: Using sieve path: /home/path/to/my/homedir/.dovecot.sieve deliver(my(a)address.test): "2008-01-19 12:05:32 "Error: Sendmail process terminated abnormally, exit status 75 deliver(my(a)address.test): "2008-01-19 12:05:32 "Info: sieve runtim error: Vacation: Error sending mail. I had just sent an e-mail about 30 seconds before that one which did not give the error. I will see if I get the error again when I send this one. Jeff

[Dovecot] Deliver core dump in b13 (hg 20080102)

Hi there I'm redirecting e-mails from mikkel(a)euro123.dk to another account (mikkel2(a)euro123.dk) using sieves "redirect" with sieve 1.1.3. The e-mail is redirected just fine. But deliver still creates a core dump and returns an "e-mail undeliverable" to the sending account (even though delivery is successful). My .dovecot.sieve contains just this: redirect "mikkel2(a)euro123.dk"; keep; As stated before the e-mail is both forwarded and delivered locally just fine. But the sending account receives this error: "<mikkel(a)euro123.dk>: Command died with signal 6: "/opt/freeware/dovecot-20080102/libexec/dovecot/deliver"" Also deliver.log shows some errors (shown below). The nfs_flush_file_handle_cache_dir error makes me wonder - seems like it tries to delete the homedir of the accounts maildir storage. Also it seems to me like a minor error since the delivery functions as it should, apart from the delivery error it returns and the core dump. [Dovecot] Plans for 1.1beta14 release?

I've been glancing at the hg changelogs, watching a number of basic fixes going in, including squat and uidlist fixes. Are there any plans for a beta14 release soon to increase exposure to these fixes, or is it in flux too much? My time lately to spend on dovecot has been sparse but I can definitely afford the time right now to roll betas into service because it is convenient. I have some tiny issues to track down that I noticed in the logs but if a new snapshot fixes them already, it saves both of us time.

Hi, I am using dovecot 1.0.10 and using passwd-file as userdb. I have enabled quota plugin in /etc/dovecot.conf. Extra fields are added into userdb. user1:X:500:500:User1:/home/user1:/bin/bash:userdb_quota=maildir:storage=1024 Location of the inbox is /var/spool/mail/user1 I dont think this is working. The user already have 5MB in INBOX and if I send a new mail, it is being delivered. Do I need to change any settings? Thanks, Ranjith

I wanted to know if more than one INBOX - entry is possible. My situation: Three users with user@domain One Mail-Adress office@domain, where all three users can get the mails. But i dont want to copy the mails from office to the user (like mailinglist), because if one reads a new mail it should be marked as read at all users. Same with answered and deleted. Hello list, while fiddling around with the configuration so Dovecot's LDA "deliver" can be used by multiple users by means of Getmail (you can read about that in [1]) I always end up running into the error message posted in the subject line: Jan 15 00:00:02 HOSTNAME deliver(USERID): Can't connect to auth server at /usr/local/var/run/dovecot/auth-master: Permission denied Notice how it says "/usr/local/var/run/dovecot"! How and why does dovecot ^^^^^^^^^^ think that anything of any importance can be found under /usr/local/var/... ? Please see dovecot -n at the end of this message, but as far as I can tell I never ever specified that the /var directory (configure --localstatedir) should end up under the prefix /usr/local. Now I am quite sure that my configuration for auth-master is not yet quite correct but I can't go any further without asking what this error message could mean and how to resolve the problem. Anybody have any ideas? I am currently running 1.0.10 (previously, until this afternoon 1.0.5, same problem) with the latest MANAGESIEVE patch (v9) applied and the dovecot-sieve plugin. [Dovecot] Imap - Loging

Hello List, i'm looking for a way to increase log-level for imap-processes. Pop3 Server writes all necessary infos about mails-transfered/deleted etc. Imap-Log writes just times and ip's of Userlogins. Is there a way to increase the imap-output? The Conf-Parameters i found did not really fit my requirements. Best result would be a collected log of transfering/deleting mails for one imap-session. Ist there a way to achieve this?
