I have recently noticed that some of our internal mailer scripts are causing Dovecot-LDA to generate Mailer Delivery Subsystem messages. I have tried to snoop through the logs (unfortunately on a very busy mail hub) using the Message-ID, however this doesn't seem to lead me back to the original message - only the MDA notification. I can only ascertain that its isolated to our scripts, as the bounces@ address is specifically used by them. Any ideas what would cause/trigger the "Unknown error" automatic rejects ? System config is -Postfix 2.3.4 with MySQL backend -Dovecot 1.0.rc26 with MySQL backend, using only deliver. All mail deliveries are otherwise fine. offlineimap looks like it will work. Do you know if it works well on big changes? I have about 1.5 gigs of email at the local site that will need to be uploaded to the main server. After its uploaded it will have to weed through it all during the sync every time. Think that will be ok? [Dovecot] Imap proxy with tls?

Hello all, I have a server with dovecot installed with imap and tls working (call that the remote server). Now I want to have a few computers at the same place to access the same account on the remote server. I have another server (call this the local server) at the local site to do this with but am not sure how to do it. The proxy setup http://wiki.dovecot.org/PasswordDatabase/ExtraFields/Proxy looks about right but that does not seem to support tls? I need tls going from the local server to the remote server. I want all emails on the remote server to be the same as on the local server. This way all clients at the local site have very fast access to email and can still get to the email when not at the local site. Any suggestions? Thanks

[Dovecot] Indexes

When something "bad" happens to the indexes, my e-mail client (Thunderbird) reports an "unable to succeed" error on opening a mailbox. Leaving that mailbox and coming back works fine. Is this expected behaviour? -- Daniel

Hi! I'm quite new to Dovecot. helping my friend to migrate from Courier-IMAP to something more efficient, we are evaluating Dovecot at the moment. I had to prepare 2 small patches for Dovecot to suit our needs, and I've decided to post it here. I'm not fully familiar with Dovecot architecture yet, I'd appreciate if someone could look if these changes make sense (i.e. doesn't break anything). And of course, maybe someone is interested as well. 1. Customized "quota exceeded" message. http://czajnick.sitenet.pl/dovecot/dovecot_1.0.9_quota_exceeded_message.diff - quick hack to let me define custom message instead of typical "Quota exceeded", simply by using plugins { quota_exceeded_message = ... }. Browsing this mailing list I've seen some posts about such feature being implemented in Dovecot. Is it done in a similar way? Which stable version is the first to include this functionality? 2. Sieve filter modification http://czajnick.sitenet.pl/dovecot/dovecot_sieve_1.0.2_envscript_patch.diff In our systems we currently use a modified maildrop MDA that picks the filter script from the database instead of the file. This has proven useful - end-user's administration panel doesn't need any special permissions (or networking capabilities), as it doesn't need to access the filesystem - it is reduced to a plain database web-app. The patch above makes the delivery agent check for the sieve script present in SIEVE_SCRIPT environment variable. If this is the case, env var content is used instead of the script stored in a usual file pointed to by SIEVE variable. This makes it trivial to pass the script from the database using base dovecot functionality. A minor drawback of such solution is that the script is re-compiled on each delivery, but I don't think it takes much time to compile a few lines of a script using (f)lex/bison-or-yacc parser. Yes, I've noticed the sieve-manage patch, but I don't want the complexity of managing sieve script over the socket connection (if my understanding of the script is wrong, please correct me). [Dovecot] do not lose mail when dovecot is dead

Hi! Recently I've experienced problems with dovecot. Dovecot died silently, what means is that there are no core files, nor any indication in the log files, just the "kevent(): Invalid argument" messages. Dovecot just died, so deliver could not connect to the auth-master socket, which means that messages couldn't been delivered. The problem is that postfix thought that the delivery was successful, and didn't place the message to delay, but deliver(LDA) couldn't deliver the message, so it got lost. [Dovecot] randomly disconnected with imap, and latest hg

Hi! I'm using latest hg from the 1.1 branch, and noticed that since yesterday's updates, dovecot randomly disconnects clients when using imap, with these message in the log: "Disconnected for inactivity in reading our output bytes=153/41319" This happens randomly. Eg. I'm fetching messages, and suddenly, dovecot disconnects. Or my MUA just sits there, and then again, dovecot disconnects me with this message. I didn't even do anything with the client, so I can't think of anything which could've been read. What could be the problem? Daniel

Hi, I have to admit that I'm not quite sure why no one has responded to me about this one. If I'm not providing enough information or incorrect information please tell me. It's quite important that this e-mail system be working. I do not quite understand what it is that I'm missing now. I have the need to setup and configure various users as virtual users. To this end, I've configured them so that their home directories are "/virtusers/<userid>" and their INBOXes are "/var/mail/<userid>." I have created a system user ID called "vmail" which is referenced in my PostgreSQL database for UID/GID stuff. All virtual user home directories and INBOXes are made owner "vmail" and group is "users." Originally, I had my sendmail "/etc/mail/aliases" file setup to "map" all mail sent to these virtual users to the system user "vmail." However, none of the virtual users were getting any mail and vmail was just getting swamped. After doing more digging, I found that I just didn't understand the home directories and INBOX, mbox and such. That's what drove me to configuring what's in there now. Now, following directions on this WIKI page: http://wiki.dovecot.org/LDA/Sendmail?highlight=%28deliver%29 I'm still unable to get the e-mail working for them. Continually, sendmail bails with errors saying it, "Can't create output." Because I am using *.mc files, I made a new *.m4 file as directed in /usr/share/sendmail/cf/mailer. Dovecot does allow the virtual users to login. In fact, when I did, the first time, there appears a "mail" directory in their home directories after login. This would indicate to me that the login was successful. Further, I cut/pasted a message sent to one of the virtual users from the vmail INBOX (/var/mail/vmail) into the virtual user's INBOX (/var/mail/jdunkin). Then, logged in as this virtual user and ACTUALLY got the mail. I know this stuff works. What must be done to make sendmail do its thing for deliver? What is necessary to fix this situation? Andy

I have a connection to my dovecot server from gnus: ,---- | (add-to-list 'gnus-secondary-select-methods | '(nnimap "hermes" | (nnimap-stream starttls) | (nnimap-address "hermes") | (nnimap-authinfo-file "~/.authinfo"))) `---- If I enter a group and read my mail then wander off and come back after a few minutes I can not navigate out of the group because my nnimap session has ended. What config parameter do I need to change in Dovecot to keep it open for the life of the client? (I am assuming its a dovecot issue here since it didn't happen with courier-imap).

[Dovecot] Automatically subscribe to folder?

Hello everybody, i am filtering e-mails using the cmusieve-plugin. A global script filters all mails tagged by SpamAssasin and moves them into the folder Spam: if header :is "X-Spam-Flag" "YES" { fileinto "Spam"; } My problem is that users who did not had a folder Spam until the first time of filtering a spam mail are not automatically subscribed to this new created folder. They have to do this step manually in their mail client. Is it possible to automate this script and subscribe the account to this folder when it is created by the sieve script? Regards, Christian

[Dovecot] Test Environment Question

I have my master IMAP server running DC V1.0.10. The homedir and INBOXdir are physically resident there and NFS exported (no caching) to 3 other machines. I have installed V1.1beta13 on one of them (which thus accesses the homedir/INBOXdir remotely) and plan to have a limited community test-drive it there. Are there any hazards or drawbacks in doing this? While the homedirs and INBOXdirs are thus shared, I have it so that each machine has its own local index directory and /var/run dir. Comments or dire warnings?

Hi, While building dovecot-1.0.10 i've a trouble with --docdir configure option. It seems this option overload is "lost" during makefiles recurse generation (i didn't check others overload). I have two suffixes in LDAP with users, e.g. ou=People, o=example.com ou=People, o=somethingelse.com I have the following two users: dn: uid=test1, ou=People, o=example.com uid: test1 mail: test(a)gmail.com dn: uid=test2, ou=People, o=somethingelse.com mail: test(a)yahoo.com uid: test2 The users login to IMAP as: test1(a)examle.com and test2(a)somethingelse.com. [Dovecot] Problems with AUTH=PLAIN in pop3

I'm using Dovecot (1.0.10) locally to test SugarCRM. When I tried to set up a mail account in Sugar, it complains with -- SECURITY PROBLEM: insecure server advertised AUTH=PLAIN Please check your settings and try again. -- don't know if that behaviour is a bug or a feature of php-imap. The case is that I'm unable to set up the mail account in Sugar. Timo answered to me on IRC about Dovecot assuming that a connection from the same ip is considered secured. Hi, I continue testing the beta versions and have seen a great improvement over the last few ones. On beta13 I'm seeing the following assert on some client folders: file index-mail.c: line 759 (index_mail_stream_destroy_callback): assertion failed: (mail->data.destroying_stream) If you need I can try and reproduce this in a more controled environment to pinpoint the problem. [Dovecot] Switch from courier to dovecot

I have an courier IMAP server running. To get sib dirs working I had to rename them all to begin with a period ".". e.g Maildir Maildir/{cur,new,tmp} Maildir/.account1/{cur,new,tmp} Maildir/.account2/{cur,new,tmp} Maildir/.account3/{cur,new,tmp} etc If I uninstall Courier and install dovecot, will these "period" dirs be seen by default? I am fairly new to this and sometimes it seems that Maildir format requirements vary a lot depending on client or server. Thank you for your help.

Hello, I have dovecot installed and it works for about 3 hours then I get this error (in /var/log/maillog): Jan 8 08:42:53 stu dovecot: auth(default): pam(grossmsm,69.131.100.47): pipe() failed: Too many open files I set pam_limits.so to allow the user 'dovecot' to have 8192 open files, and I also changed: login_process_size = 512 However, it still wont work for more than a few hours. When I run: lsof -p `ps -o pid= -C dovecot-auth` I get: [...] dovecot-a 1385 root 248u sock 0,5 374241289 can't identify protocol dovecot-a 1385 root 249u sock 0,5 374241391 can't identify protocol dovecot-a 1385 root 250u sock 0,5 374243642 can't identify protocol dovecot-a 1385 root 251u sock 0,5 374241701 can't identify protocol [...] And the number followed by a u keeps growing. [Dovecot] OT: ctimes

I am going to convert my 32-bit Debian system to a 64-bit Debian system today. But, after I move my maildir files over to the new hard drive the ctimes are going to get modified to current time and mess up my automatic purge scripts for the Deleted Items folders. Is it possible for me to either keep the existing ctimes or is it possible for me to modify the ctimes to the date headers of the emails after I move the files? Thanks, Jeff

I was playing with Dovecot 1.1 full text indexing through Squat in late October, which was working pretty well. I wanted to ask about this behavior I had: When an email arrives in INBOX using procmail (which delivers to my Maildirs), and I see it in Dovecot, when I next do a search (IMAP SEARCH TEXT) of that folder, the search takes a long time. Successive searches are lickety-split. My question is: Can there be an option to "index greedily"? As soon as Dovecot sees the message, I'd like it to update the Squat index. That way, searches are always fast. I guess this implies a small performance hit - namely, that my IMAP server spends CPU and disk time indexing every message at the first time it is seen rather than being able to do batch indexing each time SEARCH TEXT is issued. But when I think about that, that sounds like the server can waste its time so I don't waste mine - which is exactly why I like these computing machines! (That, and because I can waste my time programming them.) -- Asheesh. -- Use extra care when cleaning on stairs.

Hi, I am having a bit of a problem with logging to stderr. I am trying to run dovecot as sort of "inetd" install using daemontools. I have daemontools 'services' named dovecot-pop3, dovecot-imap, etc. The service command line looks like tcpsvd -c20 -v -l 0 0 110 /usr/lib/dovecot/pop3-login [--ssl] In dovecot/dovecot.conf, the log_path is set to /dev/stderr. What seems to be happening is that all the log lines (regardless of service) go to the log file of which ever service was first used. Exactly how are these logs written? Is it possible to (easily) make the login process write to its own stderr? Thanks, -Abhijit

I have Fedora 7 from a standard installation running sendmail, procmail and dovecot 1.0 installed on a single partition. I now need to set up mail quotas for most of the users but not all. Just protecting /var/spool/mail/$LOGNAME is probably good enough for me. Since I just want mail quotas and the installation is on just 1 partition I don't have an easy way to use file system quotas. By reading through the dovecot documentation and list archives I have the feeling that this is possible with the versions and setup I have. I would probably need a main line like this (apart from other lines) per user mailbox that needs to be managed: dirsize:/var/spool/mail/joe-user:storage 10240 to give joe-user a 10 mb limit. Since this server is in production I don't have the luxury of experimenting (extensively) on it. I have a question though that I have not been able to answer yet. If the flow of mail goes from sendmail to procmail to the mailbox, how is it possible for dovecot to implement quotas on the inbox? Or would dovecot write something there that procmail has to honor? Hi, I have Heimdal Kerberos with authentication in my Samba PDC, Postfix and OpenLDAP, it is perfect. But, I have problem with authentication GSSAPI of Dovecot. Dovecot experts, We just recently deployed Dovecot 1.0.rc15 on a Redhat 5 system. I have over 1400 users. At first it appeared to work fine. But soon, we had complaints of students that couldn't retrieve their email. I looked in the logs and found this error. [Dovecot] (somewhat ot?) purging old maildir messages

I'm using Dovecot (+postfix) to host some personal imap accounts on a private server (Maildir format). I've got one account that receives mostly automated mails, and I want to be able to purge messages beyond a given date (say 30 days). I know that since maildir uses flat files, I can literally just delete messages doing something similar to the following with bash: for i in $(find /var/spool/vmail/host1/user/cur/ -mtime +30); do rm $i done I dislike this approach for a few reasons. First, and most plainly, it seems crude. When running complex server software, its rarely a good idea in the field of systems administration to be bluntly deleting files out from under the running applications. It feels wrong. How does this affect dovecot's monitoring of the files and indexing? What if the files happen to be open in an email client? Etc. Emotions aside, I also very much dislike running an automated 'rm' that has the power to wipe out a lot of my email if something goes pearshaped with the script. I can think of several possible solutions that don't require subversive operations on the maildirs, but I've never used them and therefore don't know if they're actually feasible: - Use a tool designed to manipulate maildirs. Something akin to postfix's postqueue and postsuper tools come to mind, but I don't know if such an app exists. - Use a setting within dovecot that expires old maildir data. As I understand it this will be available in 1.1 (yay!); unfortunately that's not an option for me until 1.1 is available as stable in my server os. - Use a scriptable mua that has the capability to check mail under said account and automatically delete based on age. I know very little of tools in this area, so again I don't know if such an application exists. Any pointers you might have would be much appreciated. Thanks, Matt

[Dovecot] Problem with passwords surrounded by curly braces

Hello, one of my users set his password to something surrounded by curly braces, and promptly all access to his mailbox was refused. After looking through the logs I found an entry "Unknown password scheme xxxx", where "xxxx" is the user's password, but without the curly braces. I then browsed through the documentation and there was explained that it is possible to prefix the password with the password scheme in curly braces, like "{PLAIN}xxxx" where xxxx is the password itself. Manually altering the users password in the database to "{PLAIN}xxxx" (where "xxxx" is the user's password WITH curly braces) fixed this problem for me at this time, but the time a user chooses such a strange password I would have to edit the table again. So in my opinion the {SCHEME}-prefix is not a useful thing. Why would anyone need it, anyway? Shouldn't all passwords have the same scheme which is set in the dovecot.conf file once? If the feature is indeed used: with a database lookup it should be replaced by an optional database field or, if that's not possible, it should be possible to disable this feature from the config file. One of the key points that came up when I researched and wrote the "Five Things CIOs Should Know about Fighting Spam" article (http:// www.cio.com/article/28830) was that they should know the basics of how email works. Otherwise, said plenty of techies, the CIO won't have the first idea of what the email admin is complaining about. So I'm going to do my part. I'm going to write an "ABCs of Email" article (to accompany the many other ABCs articles we have on CIO.com, at http://www.cio.com/article/40242 ). I'd like your input on the topics that should be included, keeping in mind the fact that the target reader is a CIO, IT manager, or someone who wants to understand the basics, *not* actively get involved in email management. You don't need to write an essay for me or inundate me with links (though hey, if you want to make my life easier I shall not complain). What I'm looking for, primarily, are the categories of information that I should cover. In other words, if your CIO had an email ephiphany and asked you to give a half-hour presentation, what would you include? This won't be an "Expert says..." article nor will it be "Geek on the street says...." I intend to compile and research the "least you need to know" for the not-necessarily-techie bosses out there. Hi Guys, This has bitten us twice now. We're running Gentoo and emerge (ie compile) a new version of Dovecot thinking we can finish that then restart Dovecot in our own time. It seems that Dovecot immediately starts to use the newly compiled Dovecot binary and we get version mismatch errors preventing access. Would be good if Dovecot behaved in such a way that it kept on using the old version (held in memory) until it was restarted where it then loaded the new version. Dan

I am stuck. I get nothing in the logs (about deliver). Sendmail complains about "User unknown". I am not sure I have my sendmail.mc configured right, can someone confirm or give me some sample config files that make use of Dovecot+LDAP and sendmail LDA? Dovecot is running as root. I am a little confused, so the auth-master is not even needed? Whenever I try to access an e-mail in the middle (rather than at the end) of the mailbox, my mail-client (KMail) gets an error a message like this is logged in the maillog: IMAP(mi): FETCH for mailbox INBOX UID 39641 got too little data: 4823 vs 4825 IMAP(mi): Disconnected: Disconnected The actual numbers vary, but it is always X vs X+2 The problem started when I upgraded to 1.0.8. Unfortunately, it is still here with 1.0.9. The mailbox in question is the standard Unix mbox (/var/mail/mi in my case). The server runs FreeBSD/amd64. Please, advise. Thanks! -mi

Hello, I recently migrated to Dovecot from Courier-IMAP and i'm very happy with the IMAP Performance and Dovecot in general. The server is running qmail-ldap and i'm still using the qmail pop3 daemon for the POP3 users. Because i want to get rid of qmail completely (switching to exim) i just tried to replace the qmail pop3 daemon with dovecot too. Immediately after the migration the server became basically unusable because of the high I/O Load caused by the dovecot pop3 daemon. I did some debugging and it looks like dovecot opens every old mail in a users maildir and wants to create it's index files etc. I tried running dovecot pop3 with and without "in memory" indexes but this didn't change anything. Is it possible to disable the indexing of the old e-mails completly for pop3? I understand that dovecot is primarily an IMAP Server but i didn't expect the POP3 Performance to be that bad compared to the qmail pop3 daemon (which is very very basic i have to admit). Is there anything i may have overlooked which helps with the POP3 Performance, any patches that disable the unnecessary indexing etc.? If not, what do you guys recommend and use as a pop3 daemon that is fast and stable? HOME_DIRECTORY_USED_BUT_NOT_GIVEN_BY_USERDB is no helping me too much! Any news on the b13 compile issue on Solaris 10 (both Sparc and X86)? Would be nice to know whether it's our own headache or something thats not supposed to be and thus expected to be fixed in the next release. Is problem with CPU load solved? I have same problem - dovecot-auth eats one of my cores. I'm using dovecot 1.0.7 on Solaris 10 Sparc. I tried to use auth-bind and standard scheme with separate user for bind and have same result. Problem occupts only with LDAP authentication, on some other systems I use PostgreQSL and MySQL authentication and doesn't have this problem. Using PAM authentication is not possible, because dovecot run in chroot'ed environment and I planing to move it to separate system or zone without ldap client. -- MATPOCKuH

As it stands now, Dovecot seems highly vulnerable to widescale brute-force password dictionary scans. I setup postfix/dovecot on a new machine and now all works well with the small exception of dovecot triggering selinux avc denials on some temp... files here is a sample alert: Summary SELinux is preventing /usr/libexec/dovecot/deliver (dovecot_deliver_t) "link" to temp.localhost.678.40caaf5592891c46 (user_home_dir_t). Detailed Description SELinux denied access requested by /usr/libexec/dovecot/deliver. It is not expected that this access is required by /usr/libexec/dovecot/deliver and this access may signal an intrusion attempt. It is also possible that the specific version or configuration of the application is causing it to require additional access. Allowing Access Sometimes labeling problems can cause SELinux denials. You could try to restore the default system file context for temp.localhost.678.40caaf5592891c46, restorecon -v temp.localhost.678.40caaf5592891c46 If this does not work, there is currently no automatic way to allow this access. Instead, you can generate a local policy module to allow this access - see http://fedora.redhat.com/docs/selinux-faq-fc5/#id2961385 Or you can disable SELinux protection altogether. Anyway, I'd very much like for the MySQL backend to call mysql_options, so that it'll read the settings defined in MySQL's my.cnf under the [client] section. This allows to set a whole slew of MySQL specific settings for the MySQL connection, for example to enable the compressed protocol, set charsets, enable SSL client verification, and much more. A patch is attached that implements this. Hi! I'm using procmail to filter my email. (I have to use it because of various features that are not supported by sieve.) However, I'd like to deliver mail to my mboxes using dovecots deliver program in order to update index files and speed up mbox access. Using "| $DELIVER -m <mboxname>" in my procmail receipes, everything works fine, except that the envelope sender address is mangled. deliver sets it to MAILER-DAEMON, even though it is already provided in the first line of the mail. I cannot use the "-f <address>" options of deliver, since procmail doesn't provide the envelope-sender address in a variable. (I'd have to extract it from the first line of the mail using a separate receipe, which isn't very efficient.) Is there a way to keep the already existing "From " line? I have been trying to set up dovecot with postfix to use at work. I'm trying to configure dovecot to authenticate against active directory and postfix the same. I installed dovecot 1.0.10 on FreeBSD 7.0 beta 2 When I telnet in the get authentication ok but an error suggesting that there is no Mailbox belonging to that user. I am using Maildirs. How can I now create a Maildir with the proper permissions for that virtual user? Thanks for any assistance.

The recent addition of auth_gssapi_hostname is a welcome addition, but a little more is needed for multi-homed (or multi-domained) sites. SSH recently added this enhancement to address this common need: GSSAPIStrictAcceptorCheck Determines whether to be strict about the identity of the GSSAPI acceptor a client authenticates against. If “yes” then the client must authenticate against the host service on the current hostname. If “no” then the client may authenticate against any service key stored in the machine’s default store. This facility is provided to assist with operation on multi homed machines. The default is “yes”. Note that this option applies only to protocol version 2 GSSAPI connections, and setting it to “no” may only work with recent Kerberos GSSAPI libraries. I've heard that other daemons support multi-names by instead of using gethostname(), obtain the hostname of the interface that the request came in on. Can either approach be looked at for dovecot ? Essentially, this user is a virtual user. I have it so that the system user, vmail, is the basket into which all virtual users e-mail goes. If my understanding is correct (and please enlighten me if it's not), mail aliases are setup to "map" aliased names into a real account. From there, dovecot will return e-mail to the virtual user based upon the "To" field of the e-mail, correct? I have some aliases in my sendmail config that do just this. From the error below, it would seem that dovecot is actually authenticating the virutual user "jdunkin" in this case, but can't get some directories made. I've seen on my FreeBSD system that each system user has a "mail" file in the directory, /var/mail/<userid>. What needs to be done further? Also, how do I ensure that virtual users are able to get their mail as well as system users? Currently it mostly contains all kinds of TV series DVDs (feel free to laugh at what I watch :), but I also managed to remember a couple of books I wanted.

On F7, I get to where I have Postfix and Dovecot installed and configured, postfix check runs fine, but when I try to start Dovecot I'm getting a permission error. Hi Timo, may I request once more to consider the attached patch for dovecot 1.1, it enables the sieve plugin (incl. sievec and sieved, needed for pysieved) to be built against an installed dovecot package, if --enable-header-install additionally installs the liblib.a library in the same directory as dovecot-config. I have included this patch in the pkgsrc dovecot 1.1 package a while ago. Geert

Hi Timo, I'm curious about such thing, currently if user have their own filter global filter no more take a place. Is this behavior changed in 1.1 or maybe in future? I'm unsure if this is 100 sieve related or more like Dovecot handling so fixing can be easily can done.

I use dovecot to push email to my SE P1i and it works very well. :) However, I have two email accounts set up on the phone, one using my domain for GPRS and public WiFi and one using my WLAN address for use at home, the idea being I don't want to pay for GPRS data at home. The trouble is the GPRS account remains logged on and I get the mail in both inboxes. There is no option in the email client on the phone to disconnect, so is there any trick to forcing a disconnect from the mail server? I've mentioned this before but only heard from one other person who has experienced this, but it's becoming a pretty serious issue. The situation: A spammer sets a bot on a fishing attempt to gain email addresses, causing numerous login processes to spawn and suck up all available resources. The problem: Obviously this can act like a dos attack, but the real issue is after the spammer stops (by virtue of being added to our firewall blacklist, being caught and shut down by their isp, or otherwise), dovecot doesn't seem to relinquish the resources, causing "too many files open" errors for normal usage. The master process usually hangs around 40-50 files open at any given time, with about 10,000 logins a day (I use: lsof -p `cat /var/run/ dovecot/master.pid ` | wc -l), after the attempt is over I always see the files open shoot up to near 3,000 without it able to go down until a dovecot restart. This usually happens about once a month, though we can get unlucky and have it happen a few days apart. I have some log excerpts below. Wondering if this is happening through my own fault or at least within my ability to alleviate the issue. Is there a way to limit the number of connections from an ip address? Has anyone used login_executable to first hit their own solution to keep track of, and implement connection restrictions similar to what I'm aiming for? I'll try to stay away from this list and Dovecot in general for the next 1,5 weeks. I've several exams coming up and I should have started studying for them days ago already.. :) The main things left in my TODO are: - Squat indexes should handle expunges - Lucene indexes are broken - See if \recent flag handling could be fixed for maildir/mbox (it works for dbox though) - Some other minor things which I'll do if I have time, but won't block v1.1.0 release. Changes since beta10: - One major performance issue found and fixed. This was the main reason why we weren't yet in release candidate stage. - configure --with-package now gives an error if it can't find the necessary libs/headers for the package. Use --with-package=auto for the old behavior. - Memory leak fixes - Convert plugin fixes. Conversion is now done to namespace with INBOX. - Changes to handling group adding/removing to processes. Hopefully didn't break anything. - Message flag/keyword searches are now faster - Fixes/optimizations to handling SORT. [Dovecot] auth-ldap not resetting connection state after failed bind

I'm pretty sure that the OpenLDAP client libraries provide options to use a client-side timeout for LDAP connections. My questions are: * is there a reason that Dovecot wants to keep the LDAP connection open? * Will the new V1.1 version have a config parameter to set the LDAP client timeout or a default timeout value to close the connection? * If there's no 'fix' foreseen for V1.1, I'd like to file a request to add such a parameter. How can I file such a request? The warning is annoying; the sysadmin will create a filter, to filter the warning out from the syslog, but I'm afraid that if there's a real problem with authentication, that will be filtered too and the real problem is not noticed, before users start to complain. /rolf

Hi, I'm testing version 1.1.beta10 and getting these assertions on deliver: file index-transaction.c: line 54 (index_transaction_finish_rollback): assertion failed: (t->mail_ref_count == 0) This was after an upgrade from a 1.0 release candidate. Hi, i still try to get dovecot to run under cygwin. After a post on the cygwin list i am able tu run dovecot. Under Cygwin you have to run dovecot by inetd. Starting the binary "dovecot.exe" does not work. Well the server is running but answers with a fatal error. Account: 'localhost', Server: 'localhost', Protokoll: POP3, Serveranswer: 'Fatal: EOF while reading environment from master', Port: 110, Secure (SSL): No, error on server: 0x800CCC90, Fehlernummer: 0x800CCC90 This error is from Outlook, Thunderbird just says there is an error without any error message. Hi, i've tryed to setup per user quota with postfix/dovecot, but without luck. My configuration is: postfix 2.3.8 with virtualdomain on mysql (http://workaround.org tutorial) dovecot 1.0.9 IMAP/PO3 OK on dovecot config, i've made the changes for the quota plugin, i've setup the gereral quota at 20MB, with this configuration: quota = maildir:storage=20480:messages=1000 it works very well, from telnet connection and squirrelmail, i see the right % of quota used. My problem is the per user quota, if i want give some user, more or minus space, i'm not able to do this. I've added a quota field to the mysql that read dovecot, but i don't know ho to read this in dovecot-mysql.conf. Someone can help me? Thanks

This release fixes a lot of bugs and adds some new sanity checks. Fixes quite a lot of mbox problems. v1.1.beta11 (no other versions) had a potential security hole where memory was free()d multiple times. \Recent flags should work perfectly now with mbox. Still somewhat broken with maildir.
