Hi folks, I am currently evaluating Dovecot for deployment to ~200 software engineers (so, heavy email users); I'm hoping this list could provide wisdom about how best to do the configuration, evaluation and deployment, and what testing folks have done to determine whether dovecot is right for their site. Below I've listed the diffs between the dovecot-example.conf and our config. I've been playing with 1.0rc19 running on Solaris Nevada. We have set it up on our server on an alternate port from the existing IMAPd, which is something ancient, horrible and problematic. We're using sendmail and mail.local as our MTA and MDA, respectively, as these ship with the OS, and we need to test them. I have some users who have volunteered to experiment with the server, and they are starting to do so. I've also seen the "flags" problems others have mentioned on the list, and I do not think I could deploy to production with that bug affecting the users. I also have some issues which I'm not sure have been previously reported: One user (of my 4 test users) is occasionally seeing a bug in which mutt 1.4.2.1 claims to be "[downloading xxx/30724]" headers. Upon getting very near to the 30724 total, the total rises to something like: "[downloading xxx/50132]". And on and on. The actual number of messages in the box is 30724. This is not very reproducible, and we do not yet know if it's a problem with mutt or dovecot. Another, using Apple's Mail.App reported: "Everything was working fine until i quit out of my mail app (Mac mail) and restarted. Then i saw weird things: - messages wouldn't get marked unread - messages from eons ago started showing up in my Drafts folder - Inbox would keep spinning/loading - then eventually Inbox just hung showing me no messages" Any thoughts about how to approach these issues? I don't really have a feel for how to go from user-observed-app-doing-X to imapd-is-doing-Y. The big challenge for our site may be mailbox size: the median mailbox size is 62M, the average is 176M and the largest is 1.1GB. I'd be curious to know what sort of mailbox sizes other sites have experienced, and how widespread the use of the Dovecot MDA is-- is this likely to make a big difference for us, and will we have to migrate our (approximately 25) procmail users to sieve? Having read the recent discussions about "1.0", I think my team would really appreciate knowing how to obtain something that was thoroughly vetted and worked highly reliably. If major changes are coming, I think it'd be great to have a 1.0.x stability focused tree, and a 1.1.x (or 2.x.x) feature tree. Change it to avoid log throttling with mail_log plugin. - Changing message flags was more or less broken in rc19 - ACL plugin still didn't work without separate control directory - Some mbox handling fixes, including fixing an infinite loop - Some index file handling fixes - maildir quota: Fixed a file descriptor leak - If auth_cache was enabled and userdb returned "user unknown" (typically only deliver can do that), dovecot-auth crashed. - mail_log plugin didn't work with pop3

[Dovecot] namespace subscription problem

Greetings, I am trying to setup a private namespace in dovecot and running in to some troubles. When I load my imap folder and go to Subscribe, I can see the master "maillog" folder, and expand it to see all the subfolders. The problem is, I cannot subscribe to the master "maillog" folder. Only it's sub folders. Is it possible to change this to yes? Would changing this to yes allow me to subscribe to the actual namespace folder? I tried adding "subscriptions=yes" and "subscription=yes" to dovecot.conf but both entries resulted in failed starts and errors. How is it possible allow subscriptions directly to this namespace? Hi, Timo! On the new server running 1.0rc19 people stop being able to login every once in a while. [Dovecot] dspam plugin

Hi all... I was looking into the dspam plugin, and it looks very interesting. I saw two version of it around: - one that forks and call dspam - one that calls a store procedure in mysql. I was wondering if we can just log signature and classification into a flat file, instead. The problem is that calling spam can be expensive; And eventhough the myslq solution is brilliant, I dont want to rely on mysql to be alive in order to move the files to/from spam box. Plus, the plugin would be much lighter wihtout libmysqlclient. Any ideas?

Hi all, We've downgraded to rc17 for the past week or so, as when we upgraded to rc19, this error did go, but came back again. ERROR: Could not complete request. Query: LSUB "" "*" Reason Given: Internal error occurred. Refer to server log for more information. Looks like it never helped us in rc19. Back on rc17 just now, which we still have to restart a few times a day, do to the LDAP stuff (which was fixed in rc18/19), but at least we can get in ;-) Which logs settings/debug do you need to get more info? I have about 30 pop3 users at my dovecot server, and sometime there's mailboxes (/var/spool/mail/userid) are corrupt. Troubled mailbox contains unnecessary 2 lines on head of file. Example is follow... ------------------------ .93C7E660-- >From xxxxxx(a)xxxxx.com Tue Jan 16 19:29:21:2007 ------------------------ 3rd and following lines has no plobrem. Maybe, this first line is last line of previous mail. But I don't know why it was leaved. At such cases, when user tried to get his mail by pop3 client on remote host, and close connection by server immidiate. ------------------------ -ERR Mailbox isn't a valid mbox file Connection closed by foreign host. ------------------------ Every time I delete 2 lines from his mailbox to restore on server console when it corrupt. Hello all, First of all my respects to Johannes for the nice dspam plugin he created. Unfortunatly i got stuck with a problem in that same plugin since it didn't allow the use of more than one Trash folder. That can be an issue if you have a wide variety of clients working in a wide variety of languages. Not all use the english "Trash" for that folder. I've written a small patch to accomodate that situation and it's working just fine for me. I'm submitting it in the hope that it can be usefull to others. Hope it's usefull for others too. [Dovecot] Performance, dovecot vs tpop3d

Hello, I am new to the list and have spent extensive time researching performance suggestions through the list and the documentation. Particularly interesting is the recent performance thread related to the upcoming release. I just upgraded one of our email servers from tpop3d to dovecot 1.0rc19. tpop3d has served us well for many years; however, it basically has lost all it's support and developers. My main liking of tpop3d was it's speed. After the upgrade to dovecot, the server began to crawl. This server runs postfix for the delivery agent and now dovecot for pop3 and imap. The box serves roughly 9000 virtual maildir mailboxes with roughly 20 pop3 processes active at any given time. I ran some tests this morning to determine an exact difference between running tpop3d and dovecot. dovecot: I/O load averages 81%, System load averages 12.00 tpop3d: I/O load averages 20%, System load averages 0.50 To ensure it wasn't just a fluke of logins, I let each app run for several minutes, and did the test multiple times. The results were not any abnormal user usage and definitely related to application performance. My current settings in dovecot related to performance are: mmap_diable = yes mmap_no_write = yes Modifying these to no seems to decrease performance slightly but only a few percent. I have also played with various other settings, which didn't give me any significant performance boost. I'm eager for the next release which will have the fsync_disable option to see if that helps, it certainly looks promising. One observation where the majority of the load seems to be generated from is when a pop3 connection is loading up a very large maildir. The pop3 process seems to remain around using I/O for a considerable time, even when the user has no new email. Perhaps it is rebuilding or verifying it's index files? Here is an example of a lsof of the pop3 process with a user who has roughly 17000 messages. They check their email every 10 minutes which seems to add significant load. Note the final line, it's reading an individual message file, yet the user has no new email since the last login. If i keep lsofing the process, the final file seems to change and keep going through many of their mailbox files. The process takes many minutes to complete. Is it rebuilding the index on every login? Since my users often use the webmail system to delete messages to save their poor strained dial-up POP3-using mail clients, and our new web mail system isn't expunge-happy like the last one, I found need for this patch -- it adds a configuration option for pop3 "pop3_ignore_deleted", a boolean, that does just that. [Dovecot] Mail Answered status flag in pine stopped working in rc19

The Flag indicating that a message has been Answered does not work in pine. The status flags for New and Deleted work as always. The Answered flag worked properly in dovecot 0.99, but after upgrading to 1.0rc19 it stopped working. Interestingly, mail that was answered before upgrading to rc19 still shows the proper flag. I have tried with mbox_dirty_syncs turned on and off and I have tried putting "flags" in mail_cache_fields. Obviously I am wandering in the dark. Here is the setup: pine 4.64 dovecot 1.0rc19 (installed from rpm dovecot-1.0-2_40.rc19.el4.at.i386.rpm) Centos 4.4.2 x86 mail_location = mbox:~/mail/:INBOX=%h/.mailspool/%u:INDEX=/var/dovecot_indexes\/%d/%n Inbox is NFS mounted, INDEX is on local disk Thanks.

So with any login it takes the full ~30 seconds to rebuild the index on a 17000 email user. I've confirmed also that tpop3d is doing no indexing whatsoever on disk. It isn't even compiled with that option. So it seems it is probably disk caching which is assisting tpop3d with returning a 2nd login (within a few minutes) so quickly. I wish it were the case that all users downloaded messages, but it seems all too often users click the 'leave messages on server', and never expire them. We have quite a few users (thousands probably) in that condition. We occasionally delete old stuff. Did I hear about an expire plugin upcoming? That would be useful. - Nate

I'm on the rc8 RPM that comes with FC5, but am willing to remove it and install a later Dovecot built from source. 1) Is this a known problem that can be fixed by upgrading? 2) If not, can someone tell me what this message means exactly, and how to gather more information for debugging? I asked myself whether I need to do anything to prevent SQL injection via forged user or domainnames. In the wiki I didn't find anything specific, only http://wiki.dovecot.org/Variables which mentions that there is the %E modifier which escapes single quites and backslashes. This appears to be a good idea but I am asking myself whether I need to do this since it is not mentioned anywhere. Is anybody able to comment on this? And BTW, it appears that one can use several modifiers at once. This is only implicitly mentioned in the wiki (You can apply modifier*s*), but it appears to work. Hi I'm currently prowling for some IMAP tools to help me maintain our mailboxes. I'd prefer "pure" IMAP, i.e. no messing with file system directly, but would settle for more crude ways if need be. Specifically I am looking for: - Expunge tool: Outlook does not seem to auto-expunge messages in any way shape or form. So I'd like to run a daily cron to expunge all mailboxes. - Quota helper: Some way to send a warning email once a day or so, saying "you're close to your quota limit, please delete some mail" or somesuch Granted, I could write these two from scratch - but why reinvent the wheel? I installed the RPM, and fought with it for days before realizing the packaged config file is incorrect. So I downloaded the latest tarball and used the sample dovecot.conf file. I was finally able to get dovecot to run as long as I leave the mail_location line commented out. If I uncomment the line dovecot complains that "mail_location" is an "unknown setting". Hi, folks. I'm senior online editor at CIO.com, and I'm working on an article for which I'd very much like your help. There's often a lack of communication between techies and top company management. Maybe they don't want to hear about problems; perhaps you give them technical details that are far more granular than they want to know. But dealing with spam is a topic that every e-mail admin has to cope with -- and I'm not sure that the CIO knows the real issues. I have the ear of the boss, however. Essentially, I'm trying to put together the collected wisdom of e-mail and network admins in a fashion that CIOs will understand. Or at least one teeny corner of it. So I have a very simple question to pose to you: ***If you could get your CIO (or top management) to understand one thing, just ONE thing, about fighting spam, what would it be?*** And the follow-up: why did you pick that one item? Feel free to share anecdotes, horror stories, even success stories. While I hope that every CIO will read this article, I also hope that it becomes the document you bring to a new manager ("Here: this is what's important to me"). I'm sure there are plenty of other things that you wish your CIO grokked, whether about e-mail administration or other topics (not the least of which is "the e-mail admin is underpaid"). But I do have to limit myself somehow, and "what's important about fighting spam" has a lot of leeway. [Dovecot] Cannot fill the maildir with mails

Hello! I have installed Dovecot yesterday as a simple connection between a local mailbox and Novell Evolution. I have set up a POP3 service that I can succesfully connect to. I chose the Maildir structure but the whole box is empty. When I try "echo ´test´ | mail -s ´test´ user42" it doesn´t reach the mailbox. What can I do? I could also try the mbox format but Evolution has problems connection to an mbox file, it just says "loading..." and nothing happens. Hello, I'm sure there is no good answer to my question, but it doesn't take much to ask, so I will. I am about to migrate my current Dovecot IMAP + Popa3d mailbox server to Maildir. I need to keep both protocols (IMAP and POP3) and will be switching to Dovecot on both. The question is simple - is there any way to keep POP3 UIDs through migration, so people won't get duplicates in their inboxes. Second question is not that important but if somebody has a good answer it will be really nice - is there any way to keep IMAP UIDs? With IMAP it won't create dups, but loosing (changing) UIDs will create extra load on the server. I know, this is more about mailbox->Maildir conversion, not dovecot, but this is the only place I can ask this question P.S. am running dovecot on linux FC5 right now, but will be upgrading to FC6 / dovecot 1.0 release at the time of migration. Hi, I've been trying to get dirsize quotas to work properly with 1.0rc19 and Dovecot consistently crashes when attempting to do file copies once a user is over quota. Dovecot works fine for us for regular mbox based IMAP, but as soon as I add the following two entries in their respective locations in dovecot.conf: mail_plugins = quota imap_quota (in the imap{} section) quota = dirsize:storage=2000 (in the plugin{} section) If a user goes over quota, and they attempt to copy a file to a folder via IMAP, all I get is this: dovecot: [ID 684838 mail.error] child 20868 (imap) killed with signal 10 Is anyone successfully using dirsize:storage quotas with 1.0rc19? If so, can someone else verify if they see crashes like this? As soon as I remove the quota plugin, the crashes go away and all is good, so there's obviously some sort of problem in the quota plugin. I reported this against rc7 and rc8, and still see it occasionally. (I'm running the rc8 that comes with Fedora 5). It is always associated with this message in dovecot.log: dovecot: Oct 23 19:26:17 Error: POP3(user(a)domain.tld): mbox sync: UID inserted in the middle of mailbox /var/mail/vhosts/domain.tld/user (12 > 4, seq=2, idx_msgs=5) Once this happens, dovecot will refuse to clear out the mbox file when the user retrieves email via POP. Each time the user logs in to retrieve mail s/he gets everything in the mbox, which continues to grow. The only fix I've been able to find is to manually delete the mbox file. I upgraded one server to 1.0rc19 (from rc15) over the weekend, and have since received several reports of dovecot erroneously retrieving older messages as new mail. I've seen this myself intermittently on KMail, and users have reported it on Thunderbird, Squirrelmail, and Outlook. I see some things in the archives that suggest that this was a problem in older 1.0 release candidates, but hadn't experienced the problem myself until just now. Has anyone else seen this problem? Hi, Busy with dovecot on a linux server with not very much RAM in it (512 MB max total). On this server dovecot will only handle about 12 users, with never more than 3 IMAP webmail users at a time, and a maximum of 2 POP3 users at a time using it. I'm going all secure later on, but first I would like your opinion on what configuration best to use with, say, max 5 users busy at one time, and have it use as little RAM and CPU as possible. (Same machine is also running httpd, squirrelmail, php5, postfix, clamd, clamsmtpd, sshd.) [Dovecot] Benchmarking

I wasted too much time today doing this, but they do show a few interesting things: 1) mmap_disable=yes is faster than mmap_disable=no. I didn't expect this. I'm not yet sure why this is, but possibly because then it updates the mail index by reading the changes from dovecot.index.log, instead of reopening and re-mmaping dovecot.index. At least that's the biggest difference between them. 2) Dovecot is faster than Cyrus, at least in test. I didn't really expect this either, because with maildir Dovecot has to do extra rename() calls for all flag changes. I'm guessing it's expunges that are slowing Cyrus down the most (that causes it to rewrite its cache file). 3) fsync_disable=yes + mmap_disable=yes almost doubles the performance with 1 client, and over quadruples the performance with 10 clients. Why fsync_disable=yes + mmap_disable=no doesn't give that big of a performance difference? I've no idea. This is anyway such a large performance increment that I'll probably go and backport this setting to v1.0 too :) 4) Dovecot's mbox code kicks maildir's ass. 5) dbox is surprisingly slow. I'll have to find out why. I don't think it should be that slow. 6) Courier.. Well, it probably doesn't come as a shock that Dovecot is almost twice as fast. Note that Courier doesn't call fsync(), so it can't be compared to Dovecot's fsync_disable=no numbers or to Cyrus. Oh, one other difference between Courier and others was that it didn't support LITERAL+ extension, so it maybe could have done a bit less appends than others. 7) CVS HEAD and branch_1_0 don't seem to have that big of a performance difference. All the tests were done using my IMAP tester: http://dovecot.org/tools/imaptest.c The mailbox data that was being appended was Dovecot's mailing list: http://dovecot.org/archives/dovecot.mbox The linefeeds were converted to CR+LF. However, for the Dovecot CVS HEAD runs the mails contained also those extra X-UID, Status, etc. headers which I had to remove before Cyrus would accept them (the lines didn't contain CRs). So CVS HEAD was actually doing a bit more work than the others. System: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600, 2GB memory, 300GB Seagate ATA disk with XFS Linux 2.6.19.2, x86-64 SMP, Debian unstable Dovecot: CVS HEAD unless specified otherwise Cyrus: v2.2.13-10 (Debian) - NOTE: comparable to fsync_disable:no Courier: v4.1.1.20060828-2 (Debian) - NOTE: comparable to fsync_disable:yes! [Dovecot] POP3 logging in wrong timezone

I have dovecot running on a CentOS 4.4 server, and it is logging IMAP entries just fine, in the right timezone (GMT+1), which the server itself is running on (CET), but pop3 is being logged in GMT 0, so 1 hour too early. pop3 log-entries are at the right position in the maillog, but with the wrong time next to it. Now I've read some messages in this list about this bug (or feature), but have no clue as to how to solve it. Anyone? Thanks in advance, Ben

I want to mess with a live server. (a Bad thing). I have googled until my eyes boogled, wiki'ed until my fingers are wonked, have read as much as I can read, however I'm left with a few questions/worries. Issue: I am currently running Dovecot as a pop3 server with standard /var/mail mbox's I would like to run a mixed Imap/Pop3 server with ~/maildir inbox's The thread http://www.dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2006-February/011304.html is fairly close to what I want to do, but I would like to go ahead and convert to maildir. (Mixed pop3/imap access for each user) I don't have a system to test, "I used have one but it's now the production server... PW/Disk failed, thank G-D(s) for rsync/backups". Setup: procmail, dovecot 1.0 beta 8.2 (fc5), squirrelmail. all users use outlook (2000,2003) or outlook express (random versions) (^^^^ not my choice, I just have to deal with it {and use it} ^^^^^) the majority of users will continue to use pop3, however some would like to convert to imap and have all mail stored on the server. Questions: /etc/procmailrc? just set default to ~/maildir? do I need to define "INBOX"? aka $MAILDIR=~/maildir/, $ORGMAIL=~/maildir/, $DEFAULT=~/maildir/ Same as above, what about new/cur should I set up a /etc/skel? close to above, if I create rules, for spam, etc. do I need to worry about cur/new. close to above, what about Sent Items, Drafts etc... for imap users, I do understand that client rules would likely be needed to store sent items. conversion, anything to look for? mb2md seems to work, but some users have "don't delete from server set", will they get dups? (I can live with this) archiving, can I (or a script) mess with the files in the maildir? aka keep the number of files/messages less than 16k for the outlook users. Bugs, should I cool my heals, and wait for rc16 or 1.0 final? I am currently running problem free, and I do hate to mess with something which is not busted. TIA Michael.

[Dovecot] Dovecot POP3 fails to chdir under FC6

I started the Dovecot POP3 server under Fedora Core 6 (rpm dovecot-1.0-1.1.rc15.fc6), but some users couldn't connect, with /var/log/maillog show the message Jan 24 13:20:00 mmace dovecot: chdir(/branch/home/mmace) failed with uid 205: Permission denied Jan 24 13:20:00 mmace dovecot: child 18792 (pop3) returned error 89 (I had already edited first_valid_UID in /etc/dovecot.conf to allow UID's >= 200.) However, only users who had their home directory under /branch/home couldn't connect. Users with homedirs under /home connected via POP3 just fine. I found out POP3 connection failures also logged an error to /etc/messages: Jan 24 13:20:00 mmace kernel: audit(1169662800.479:160): avc: denied { search } for pid=18792 comm="dovecot" name="/" dev=sda3 ino=2 scontext=system_u:system_r:dovecot_t:s0 tcontext=system_u:object_r:mnt_t:s0 tclass=dir So, selinux was the culprit. My home directories had the right selinux security context, but the root of the disk holding those home directories (/branch is a separate disk drive) had a security context (system_u:object_r:mnt_t) that Fedora's selinux rules for dovecot did not allow. I changed the context of /branch to system_u:object_r:usr_t, and dovecot POP3 access worked for all users.

Hi, When the Dovecot 1.0.rc19 IMAP server encounters X-UID headers with gaps in them, it hangs indefinitely. I've attached a sample mailbox (in mbox format) which repeatably exhibits this behavior. The mbox contains only three messages with the following X-UIDs in order: 774, 785, 787. If I remove the X-UID headers from each message, Dovecot handles the mailbox without any problems. UW-IMAP is able to handle the sample mbox _with_ X-UID headers. A full backtrace is also included. When Dovecot hangs, it appears to continually lock and unlock the mailbox. I'm using dotlocking so a mailbox.lock file appears and disappears constantly. I have to kill the process to log back in. I'm not familiar enough with Dovecot to offer a patch, but if anybody feels they can fix this or needs more information, please let me know. Regards, Benjamin Howell bhowell(a)iglou.com

Timo, This might be a bit vague, but I have noticed that rc19 seems to have broken the read/unread/reply flags in imap. My officemate has had problems with messages that are read and marked as read then mysteriously get remarked as unread the next time email is checked. I've had problems where I reply to a message and it does not get marked as "answered". We didn't see this with rc18 and earlier. My setup: Solaris 10, sparc, T2000 system. rc19 (now back to rc18), using mbox format. system mailbox is NFS mounted from another Sun Solaris 10 system, homedirs and dovcot cache files are on local zfs filesystems. Dovecot LDA (deliver) aliases question. I have a multiple virtual domain setup using sendmail, username/domain, password, home directory all stored in mysql,Set-UID/GID for dovecot 'deliver' setup as referenced in Dovecot LDA wiki. Delivery, and POP/IMAP work just fine, serving a mail store in /home/vmail/domain/username type of setup. My problem comes from what may be a misunderstanding on my part on how to setup aliases for some virtual users. I have the mailer specification for dovecot defined, and my mailertable and (access) tables setup for each domain, with an entry like this for each domain in mailertable: domain.com dovecot:dovecot and since I also function as SMTP relay for each customer, I also have an entry in in access domain.com RELAY and the tables are made with hash... this all appears to work just fine, except when I want to alias a certian email address. Lets say that I have one email in the domain that needs to be forwarded to another remote account (on another server), I would normally accomplish this with an entry in virtusertable something like this: sales(a)domain.com <mailto:sales@domain.com> user(a)otherdomain.com <mailto:user@otherdomain.com> but when using dovecots' deliver as the LDA specified for domain.com in mailertable, this appears to be ignored, with the email being returned undeliverable (if sales(a)domain.com <mailto:sales@domain.com> doesn't exist), or being delivered to sales(a)domain.com <mailto:sales@domain.com> (if the account exists in the mysql table). I have also tried creating the account, and placing a .forward file in the appropriate /home/vmail/domain/user directory, but this also appears to be ignored. Does anyone have some advice on how to implement such an ability? I am running dovecot-1.0.rc17, sendmail-8.13.1-3.RHEL4.5, mysql-4.1.20-1.RHEL4.1 on Centos 4.4 Sincerely Michael P.

OK, I'm trying to filter-through all the different WiKi and docs about how to configure all virtual users. Now, there's only going to be a few, and it's a secure env, so I'm going to try and configure a custom passwd file (or whatever trimmed-down version I can do), basically to do usernames, passwords, and MBOX dirs. I'm only planning on serving POP3 mail to my clients. I have a location to create MBOX files -- it will be in a specific directory, with sub-dirs for each user; sort of a /home/VU/%u/mbox . I'm really confused as to what add'l info I need to include like "INDEX" and "INBOX" on the mail_location info. Does anyone have any info and/or examples on how to configure my .conf file and create a minimal passwd file for these virtual users? Thanks in advance, AJ

I have my login log format set like so: login_log_format_elements = user=<%u> method=%m rip=%r lip=%l %c When I log in using a full email address, though, I only get the username part of the address: Jan 24 13:28:29 node7 dovecot: pop3-login: Login: user=<justin>, method=PLAIN, rip=137.118.2.60, lip=137.118.7.247 Jan 24 13:28:30 node7 dovecot: POP3(justin): Disconnected: Logged out top=0/0, retr=0/0, del=0/717, size=15797460 Is that behavior intentional? If so, can it log the full username as given by the client instead? Anyone with multiple domains probably wants to see the domain part. Changing %u to %n yields the same log entry, and %d seems to be empty so nothing gets logged if I try to log that.

[Dovecot] More AFS maildir debugging

There appears to be some sort of a race condition when accessing a maildir directory for the first time with dovecot. I was getting a non-specific error trying to select INBOX, but when I stepped through it with a debugger it worked. Deleting the dovecot files and running the select again it failed. I started playing with it again just now, and when attempting to access Sent, I actually got some errors: a04 select Sent imap(aarons): Error: Corrupted transaction log file /XX/Maildir/.Sent/dovecot.index.log: unexpected end of file while reading header imap(aarons): Error: Corrupted transaction log file /XX/Maildir/.Sent/dovecot.index.log: unexpected end of file while reading header imap(aarons): Error: Corrupted transaction log file /XX/Maildir/.Sent/dovecot.index.log: unexpected end of file while reading header a04 NO Internal error occurred. Refer to server log for more information. [2007-01-13 16:17:51] I then deleted dovecot.index.log and dovecot.index.log.2 (the only two dovecot files that were present) and retried the select: a04 select Sent a04 NO Internal error occurred. Refer to server log for more information. [2007-01-13 16:23:40] Does anyone more familiar with the code than myself have any pointers of where to concentrate my debugging efforts? Thanks. -Aaron

Hi, I'm trying to use ACL with dovecot rc18 but I don't understand where to store per-mailbox dovecot-acl file. In dovecot.conf I have mail_location = maildir:/var/vmail/%u/ and I do not use namespaces. I have some "testuser" maildir with subdir ".test". When I put dovecot-acl file to the .test directory I get this error in my log file: Error: IMAP(testuser): /var/vmail/testuser/.test/dovecot-acl is no longer kept in control directory, move it to the actual maildir (/var/vmail/testuser/.test) Error: child 28143 (imap) returned error 89 This error tells me to move dovecot-acl file from control dir to mail directory but these are the same for me (and I think it's Dovecot default for maildir). With the quota plugin loaded (even with a quota value of 0), I get errors like the following: open(/var/mailstore/01/1a/301620/Maildir/cur/1169654988.P22440Q0M696852.<hostname stripped>,S=4437552:2,Sbc) failed: Too many open files To do this, I have a folder with about 700 messages and I tell Thunderbird to run junkmail controls on it (fetches all messages). Watching an strace on the imap process I'm connected to, the problem seems to be when the plugin goes to close the maildirsize file, it's not closing the correct file descriptor: open("/var/mailstore/01/1a/301620/Maildir/./maildirsize", O_RDWR|O_APPEND) = 1016 read(1016, "1024S\n395 1\n397 1\n", 5120) = 18 read(1016, "", 5102) = 0 close(4294967295) = -1 EBADF (Bad file descriptor) It closes that same descriptor every time. On a side note, I'm just curious why it needs to read the maildirsize file for a fetch request anyway?

I'm trying to get configure to find the right libs/includes to build with SSL support (openssl), but it just seems to refuse! I tried passing " --with-ssl=openssl --with-ssldir=/usr/local/ssl ", but this didn't seem to help. Just upgraded, and then had to downgrade straight away. Couldn't get our Squirrelmail page up. Platform is Solaris 8 on a 280R. I'm setting up a new installation of Dovecot, and I ran into some troubles that I've partly tracked down. I setup auth/user dbs with LDAP initially, and things worked well. Passwords are stored as "{crypt}zxcv..." in LDAP. I setup SQL, and began getting this: dovecot: Jan 23 16:37:47 Error: child 8718 (auth-worker) killed with signal 11 Passwords are stored as "zxcv..." in SQL. I changed default_pass_scheme from CRYPT to PLAIN, and no troubles. I fixed the nightly snapshot building. Now it's again being built every night (if there have been any changes). Please test it before I'll make rc18 release. http://dovecot.org/nightly/dovecot-latest.tar.gz I've also been stress testing a lot with http://dovecot.org/tools/imaptest.c. Last night I ran it for 9 hours with mmap_disable=yes and it picked up only one race condition, which is also now fixed. I'll run the next night with mmap_disable=no and see if anything shows up with it. I'm hopeful that there aren't any important index file related bugs left anymore. To prevent accidents caused by this change, Dovecot kills itself if it finds dovecot-acl file from the control directory. * When opening a maildir, check if tmp/'s atime is over 8h old. If it is, delete files in it with ctime older than 36h. However if atime - ctime > 36h, it means that there's nothing to be deleted and the scanning isn't done. We update atime ourself if filesystem is mounted with noatime. * base_dir doesn't need to be group-readable, don't force it. * mail_read_mmaped setting is deprecated and possibly broken. It's now removed from dovecot-example.conf, but it still works for now. * Removed also umask setting from dovecot-example.conf since currently it doesn't do what it's supposed to. + Authentication cache caches now also userdb data. + Added mail_log plugin to log various mail operations. Currently it logs mail copies, deletions, expunges and mailbox deletions. - dict quota: messages=n parameter actually changed storage limit. - A lot of fixes to handling index files. Hi, i have a problem with dovecot rc17 on Solaris10. I have compiled Dovecot and openSSL in 32bit: CFLAGS="-I/opt/openssl-0.9.7l/include" LDFLAGS="-L/opt/openssl-0.9.7l/lib -R/opt/openssl-0.9.7l/lib" ./configure --prefix=/opt/dovecot-1.0.rc17 --with-ssl=openssl --with-ssldir=/opt/openssl-0.9.7l --enable-shared --disable-ipv6 --with-file-offset-size=32 make and make install ran without errors or warnings. The /opt/dovecot-1.0.rc17/var/log says: dovecot: Jan 16 11:20:05 Error: IMAP(kric0999): file lib.c: line 13 (nearest_power): assertion failed: (num <= ((size_t)1 << (BITS_IN_SIZE _T-1))) The error occures whenever i start my mail client and the authorization is successful. [Dovecot] Current state of mulit-server NFS setups

Hi list, I've been perusing the list archives, but I couldn't find a recent, definitive answer to what I'd like to know. I'm looking to set up a new batch of servers to migrate ~160,000 accounts, spread across several domains, onto (from CommuniGate). Last year I worked with the earlier beta/RC versions of Dovecot, so I'm generally familiar with the setup required. However, a lot of development has been done since I was last dealing with it. So, what I'd like to end up with is a load balanced group of servers providing pop and imap access with quota support using an NFS filesystem. We have a new Netapp device (forget the actual model) that can do SAN/iSCSI/NFS. We tried using various clustered filesystems previously, but the performance/stability issues were a nightmare, so I've fallen back to NFS (or perhaps SAN if users can't hit any server in the group). So, what does my dovecot setup need to be? I've seen some people say they disable indexing in the LDA, but allow pop/imap to index. Some say the attribute cache needs to be disabled, which I'd think would be worse than just disabling indexes. Some say indexes should be kept on local disk (dedicated server for users), and others seem to report problems even when doing so. Is there a general consensus? I was also wondering if dovecot's sanity checking on the indexes would allow each server in a balanced group to keep indexes on local disk (so if the maildir has changed on another server, dovecot rebuilds it). If so, does that take away all performance gains from having indexes at all? Thanks for any info you all can provide.

Hi, I've noticed that in the maildir backend for the quota plugin the quota limit is being read in kilobytes. In the quota-maildir.c at maildir_quota_init() , line 550 (rc18) if (strncmp(*args, "storage=", 8) == 0) { size = strtoull(*args + 8, NULL, 10) * 1024; if (size != 0) root->message_bytes_limit = size; root->master_message_limits = TRUE; } The value that's being read from storage is supposed to be in kB, at least that's what I understand from the wiki, and then the value of size is stored in bytes. thanks -- giannis.

[Dovecot] LDAP authentication stops working...

Hi all, I'm running dovecot-1.0.rc17 on OpenBSD 3.9, using userdb and passdb methods of "ldap" (SSL on 636/tcp) in addition to "passwd". Occasionally (generally after a few hours of operation, but not always), LDAP-based logins stop working (e.g. hang/timeout after POP3 PASS command). Accounts with local passwords (as opposed to accounts with a password field of "x") still work fine at this point. 'tcpdump' shows the persisient 636/tcp connection still with bidirectional traffic (PUSH/ACKs and ACKs like normal). After restarting Dovecot, things are fine until next time. I guess I could try and get login_ldap working with bsdauth, but if there's an issue in the Dovecot LDAP support I'd like to see it fixed. Any ideas? Thanks, Adrian Close P.S. Hi, Dovecot (at least versions 0.99.10.4, 0.99.11, 1.0rc15, rc17 and rc18) allows message Unique Identifiers to be an unsigned 32 bit value, so something like "X-UID: 4085788205" is allowed. Some IMAP clients I've tested (Thunderbird 1.5.0.9, SquirrelMail 1.4.9a/PHP 4.3.2) appear to use signed 32 bit identifiers and request the above message as UID 2147483647 (max signed 32 bit integer). Evolution 2.0.2 fetches 4085788205 without complaint. Is there any chance Dovecot could decide to invalidate and renumber a folder when identifiers greater than 2147483647 are found? sbg

Hello, I've decided to switch from UW-IMAP to Dovecot and so installed 1.0.rc15-2 on a Debian/Etch system and started using it with the existing MBOX folders. My configuration is pretty much the default one, in particular I didn't touch to any of mbox_xxx options. The (hoped for) performance improvements were indeed quite noticeable and mostly it works just fine but I seem to have one strange problem with the recent messages: Dovecot seems to reset the RECENT flag on the message right *before* the mailbox is opened. So even if a message was just copied to a folder (e.g. by email client filtering), it doesn't have RECENT flag when the mailbox is opened. Hi there, I recently installed a plugin for SquirelMail (php imap client, squirrelmail.org) which adds up message sizes per folder to display a nice total size of each subscribed folder. After consulting the plugin maintainers at SquirrelMail in this thread: http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.mail.squirrelmail.plugins/12468/focus=12468 There is quite a discrepancy in the rfc822.size reported by Dovecot and the actual space it takes up on my harddisk. I know there could be some overhead here from all the dovecot* and subscription list files in my imap folders, but like I stated in my email to the SquirrelMail plugin mailing list, about 1mb for a 4.3mb maildir mailbox might be a but much. Could this be like Tomas Kuliavas wrote: "Maybe those message have some data that does not belong to message or their formating breaks dovecot's message parsing functions."? That's not at least helping :) Anyway, I'd like to get lsof of an imap-login process that is doing SSL proxying. Unfortunately I don't think there's any simple way to know what processes are doing that and what aren't. Setting login_process_count=1 at least makes it more likely that you'll hit the right process. If trussing the process shows that it's writing some garbage to file descriptor 1, it's probably proxying SSL..

Hello Timo, I'm running dovecot-1.0.rc15 (imap and pop) postfix-2.3.5,1 procmail-3.22_6 (which is my LDA) on FreeBSD 6.1-STABLE I'm still using the mbox format (I'm planning to migrate to Maildir soon), mailboxes are on an NFS filesystem. I regulary see stale dotlocks files (either from dovecot (29 bytes, hold the pid of the process) or procmail (1 byte) and processes stucked in Disk Wait state. The only way I can get ridd of them is to restart nfslocking remove the .lock file change the inode of the mailbox file locking strategies are fcntl for mbox_read in dovecot dotlock fcntl for mbox_write in dovecot dotlock fcntl for procmail so I can't figure out why I see such stale locks and processes. Note : I disabled nfs attribute caching so I avoid cache related issues (such as a dotlock showing up late, etc...) Besides, I often see several imap-login processes for the same remote IP address. Does it means the user has several instances of his UA running or is it the behavior of some UA (Eudora ? Thunderbird ?) even if only one instance is run by the user. Hi, I know I shouldn't ask stuff like this when using dovecot-0.99.11-4.EL4 (CentOS-4.4), but why I'm asking this is whether it's worth to switch from rpm based upstream dovecot to a self compiled one or not and thus I think you wouldn't kill me presenting you this question. o:-) I've got a problem with dovecot regarding a pop3 proxy issue. When I configure my dovecot server to do just plain pop3 I can telnet from a windows box without any flaw, but as soon as the client uses some pop3 proxy (for example outlook uses avira antivir Mail-AntiVirus Protection), queries to that server fail. A log line looks like this: pop3-login: Dec 05 22:53:24 Info: Disconnected [::ffff:84.165.54.42] Moreover with the proxy activated, a telnet to port 110 (pop3) is not working properly, the cursor stays right behind "+OK dovecot ready." and as soon as I enter a character, the server rejects this character as an unknown command (Without pressing ENTER). As soon as I turn off the Antivir-Proxy the telnet to port 110 runs flawlessly and I can login. So I'd like to know is there anything I can do with this version or is it worth trying the newest version? Is this a known issue? [Dovecot] Bug Report: ACL plugin searches wrong directory with shared folders

I've been attempting to get to get Shared Folders and ACL's to work under dovecot 1.0rc17. Unfortunately, I've run into some problems (many have already been mentioned on the list), specifically the problem where folder-specific ACL files are not found (and I will not use Global ACL's due to the 100% probability of cross-namespace mailbox name conflicts). My namespace is as follows: namespace private { separator = / prefix = location = maildir:%h/Maildir inbox = yes } namespace private { separator = / prefix = CIW Archived/ location = maildir:%h/Mailarchive } namespace public { separator = / prefix = CIW Groups/ location = maildir:/srv/export/groups:CONTROL=%h/Maildir/public- subscriptions:INDEX=%h/Maildir/public-index } I decided to run a quick strace on dovecot's imap daemon while I was getting a folder listing to see why dovecot was not finding the folder-specific ACLs. Below are what I feel are the two key instances in the trace: Example 1: searching for ACL on private folder open("/etc/dovecot-acls//.DEFAULT", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) open("/home/ghuntress/Maildir/./dovecot-acl", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) open("/etc/dovecot-acls/Work", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) open("/home/ghuntress/Maildir/.Work/dovecot-acl", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) stat("/etc/dovecot-acls/", {st_mode=S_IFDIR|0755, st_size=4096, ...}) = 0 open("/etc/dovecot-acls/", O_RDONLY) = 7 That looks good. The ACL plugin looking for the global acls first in the correct location, then in the maildir itself for the folder- specific acl. Example 2: searching for ACL on shared folder open("/etc/dovecot-acls//.DEFAULT", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) open("/home/ghuntress/Maildir/public-subscriptions/./dovecot-acl", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) open("/etc/dovecot-acls/IS.Postmaster", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) open("/home/ghuntress/Maildir/public-subscriptions/.IS.Postmaster/ dovecot-acl", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) stat("/etc/dovecot-acls/", {st_mode=S_IFDIR|0755, st_size=4096, ...}) = 0 open("/etc/dovecot-acls/", O_RDONLY) = 7 Not so good. The ACL plugin is looking under the "CONTROL=" setting from the namespace location configuration, and not under the maildir itself for the folder-specific acl. Since we have to set the separate CONTROL location because of subscription conflicts (http:// wiki.dovecot.org/SharedFolders) we either break subscriptions by removing the CONTROL setting, or break ACL's by adding it. I'm not terribly familiar with the inner workings of Dovecot, however I can envision two possible fixes: 1.) Always have the ACL plugin look under the maildir location (and not the CONTROL override) for folder-specific ACLs or 2.) Have dovecot always place subscriptions for shared folders in a user-specific directory regardless of the namespace location configuration (although, this would probably break a ton of production configurations). I don't know what either of the above options would break, but I hope it's gives some ideas on how to fix this long-standing bug. Please let me know if I can be of any more help. -Garret -- Garret W. [Dovecot] quota in mysql not being updated

I'm having trouble getting the quota plugin to work with deliver. The quota in the database is not getting set. I am using dovecot-1.0-rc15. This server is not yet in production. Some values below are because I'm trying to test with the simplest possible case, and some because it's reading from a different database. Also, I noticed that "dovecot -n" doesn't display any information for the lda, nor any plugin information. Hello, and thank you in advance for your valuable time. I am running Dovecot v1.0.rc15 on an OpenBSD 3.9 i386 machine (no time to upgrade yet). I downloaded the source from the dovecot site, compiled and installed without any problem. The server starts up find and runs for a while. After a few hours to a few days, the server stops sending the CAPABILITY statement when a client tries to login. I found a few descriptions of this problem on the web, but no satisfactory resolution. I added some debugging code to the functions in auth-client.c and got the following traces. Included in this email are a successful login attempt, a failed attempt, and a startup trace. I am not a UNIX sockets guru and don't know the dovecot internals well enough to figure out what's wrong. I am happy to add/remove debugging code as requested to help track down the problem, although it may take a few days for the server to hang again. Hi, Running: * Dovecot 1.0 rc15 * Debian Sarge Linux Using Maildir and IMAP over SSL. When trying to delete a lot of mail (> 5000-6000 messages) in some folder, using Mozilla Thunderbird (1.5.0.7) on Ubuntu, I often experience "Connection to server <hostname> timed out." Any suggestions on how to fix this problem? [Dovecot] Virtual Users and Local Users Authentication

I am using dovecot on a SLES 10 mail server using postfix as the MTA. The original setup used local users and a single domain. I have now configured postfix to send mail to a second virtual domain which is working fine. I am trying to get dovecot to pick up the mail and have been having authentication problems. My local users uses pam and /etc/passwd for login with SSL. I have created a passwd file for the virtual users and have set dovecot to look at the passwd-like file with the path specified. However dovecot complains about the file not being present, which it is and my local users can not login. Probably doing something simple incorrectly, but can not find what fron online searches. Greetings. I've got a poorly conceived and implemented system I'm trying to migrate off of. Right now we've got 20K accounts or so, in mbox form, under UW-IMAP. Eventually we're going to move to Maildir format, but the first step is to move to Dovecot on one of our imap servers as a proof of concept. In other words, all config changes have to take place on the dovecot side, until I get PHB approval to proceed further. Right now, the inboxes are the user's username, located in /var/mail (an NFS mounted volume). So my inbox would be at /var/mail/chandler. The sub-mailboxes are in the user home directories, just scattered around-- no /mail subdirectory or anything close. So there's a folder called ~chandler/INBOX.Sent, ~chandler/INBOX.Trash, and a ~chandler/Dovecot (for this list). The list of these files is kept in ~chandler/.mailboxlist. I attempted to follow the instructions at http://wiki.dovecot.org/Migration about: You can either rename your .mailboxlist file to .subscriptions for all your users using uw2dovecot.sh <http://wiki.dovecot.org/uw2dovecot.sh>, or change the definition of SUBSCRIPTION_FILE_NAME in /src/lib-storage/subscription-file/subscription-file.c/. In 1.0-test, this value is defined in /src/lib-storage/subscription-fileindex/maildir/maildir-storage.h/ and /src/lib-storage/subscription-fileindex/mbox/maildir-storage.h/. .subscriptions is located inside of the mail directory, whereas it is possible .mailboxlist was outside of it (in user's home directory). [Dovecot] Bounce vs. Defer

Hello-- I've noticed that with when using deliver, if there is a misconfiguration in my dovecot configuration file, a permissions problem on the maildir, etc., deliver will bounce the message. I'm using Postfix, and at some point used Maildrop, and I know that maildrop (and I believe also Postfix's virtual transport) instead defer the message if there is some kind of fixable problem (like permissions). Then, when the problem is solved, you can flush the queue. Would it be possible to add a defer option to deliver? It makes it difficult to try out new options or different configurations because if you have fairly regular incoming mail, the last thing you want is a ten minute period where 20 messages get bounced... Hello, I am trying to set up dovecot as pop3 proxy. There is net lines in my auth section: passdb passwd-file { args = /usr/local/etc/dovecot/proxy.users } userdb static { args = uid=26 gid=6 } File proxy.users should contain a list of users. Now it looks like test:::::::proxy host=10.10.10.10 and everything is OK. My question is how to change passwd-file in order to match any username? [Dovecot] FreeBSD, Postfix, Cyrus SASL, Dovecot IMAP, SquirrelMail, Active Directory

Here's an update to my configuration. I'm able to use Cyrus SASL to enable SMTP AUTH in PostFix, validate user's mail addresses in Active Directory, and store mail in maildir on FreeBSD. I am currently able to authenticate AD users with Dovecot and LDAP, but I'm getting the following error in the log: Error: IMAP(user@domain): Ambiguous mail location setting, don't know what to do with it: user@domain (try prefixing it with mbox: or maildir:) Error: IMAP(user@doman): Failed to create storage data: user@domain. Error: child xxxxx (imap) returned error 89 I double-checked dovecot.conf, and the mail_location setting is "mail_location = maildir:/usr/data/vmail/%u". I'm not sure what could be happening, but I'm thinking this is the last thing I need to get my configuration to work. Your assistance is greatly appreciated. [Dovecot] LDA "deliver" with sendmail

Hi everybody, this is my first post to the list. I'm setting up a mail server with sendmail/LDAP/Dovecot (all latest version on FC6) I'm trying hard to get sendmail deliver through dovecot "deliver" I followed the instructions at the wiki: http://wiki.dovecot.org/LDA but I can't get it working. i cannot find the problem where ? when I do this as mailer: some.domain.com dovecot:dovecot or this: some.domain.com dovecot.mail.host.net sendmail always reports (on the maillog) an unknown mailer error: ...... stat=unknown mailer error 80 path to deliver is checked and executable by everyone (/usr/libexec/dovecot/deliver) can someone help please ? BTW : I manager to create a dovecot.m4, that way we can add "MAILER(dovecot)" to sendmail.mc if you are interested I will post it. Regards, Zydoon.
