Hi all, I have been putting a small (simple?)dedicated email server together to (ultimately) host a couple of domains. I am currently getting the configuration to work with one domain w/local mbox users and then plan to extend it to virtual users and an additional domain. Dovecot has been a problem to integrate in the configuration. The basic pieces are FC5, Postfix, Dovecot, with Cyrus-sasl and MySql user/password databases. I have installed, configured, and verified Postfix, Cyrus-sasl, and MySql both separately and working together. All applications are standard Yum sourced FC5 binaries. Dovecot, however, stubbornly refuses to join the party. I have searched for clues on-line and have not found anything that has helped, thus this message. The problem seems to be tied tightly to using mySQL as an access mechanism for passdb/userdb information since if I remove that access mechanism Dovecot runs fine. The reason I am looking to use mySQL is that it seemed an easy way to have a common database for user name and domain identification with a single common FQDN login authentication format for current local users and future virtual users. As I understand it, the default PAM passwd doesn't support FQDN user names. The symptom: =========== Dovecot starts and immediately exits. Maillog shows the following immediately after executing /sbin/service dovecot start Oct 12 21:36:24 Playtime dovecot: Dovecot v1.0.beta8 starting up Oct 12 21:36:25 Playtime dovecot: child 29479 (auth) returned error 89 Oct 12 21:36:25 Playtime dovecot: child 29480 (auth) returned error 89 Oct 12 21:36:25 Playtime dovecot: Auth process died too early - shutting down Oct 12 21:36:25 Playtime dovecot: auth(default): net_connect_unix(/var/run/dovecot/auth-worker.29480) failed: Permission denied Oct 12 21:36:25 Playtime dovecot: auth(default): net_connect_unix(/var/run/dovecot/auth-worker.29479) failed: Permission denied It appears that the dovecot-auth process is immediately exiting with a non-specific error (89) and no collateral info. There are two sets of error 89's because the process count is set to 2 in dovecot.conf (see below). Looking at the messages log, you find a line reflecting the empty sockets as below: Oct 12 21:36:25 Playtime kernel: audit(1160714185.460:373): avc: denied { write } for pid=29479 comm="dovecot-auth" name="auth-worker.29479" dev=dm-0 ino=692358 scontext=user_u:system_r:dovecot_auth_t:s0 tcontext=user_u:object_r:dovecot_var_run_t:s0 tclass=sock_file There is nothing in the auth log other than happy noises from Postfix about its mySQL accesses. I am unaware of any other logs that might shed some light. Troubleshooting: ============= --- I have been using standard FC5 compiled binaries sourced through YUM for all applications. To the best of my knowledge, the package that Yum pulled for Dovecot is built --with-mysql and thus should support mysql access. I found this tidbit of info in the /usr/src/redhat/SPECS/dovecot.spec document. -- I have rolled back the dovecot.conf to remove the mysql passwd/userdb configuration leaving the default PAM configuration and found that Dovecot behaves correctly and joins the party. However, since Postfix is using mySQL data, the client FQDN login user names it uses don't match up with the simple UNIX user names that Dovecot's default PAM password mechanism is supporting (thus my attempt to get them both to use the mySql database.) So from this I know that the problem appears to be basic to startup of dovecot-auth and the mysql configuration. -- I have verified the location of the dovecot-sql.conf file as configured in dovecot.conf -- I have verified that the 'connect' parameters in the dovecot-sql.conf.work from a command line and the password_query syntax from inside mysql. I've seen a couple of these in the log while testing the proxy too. Do you know what would cause this? In looking into this further, I see what you're getting at. There are commands in postfix/master.cf which specify different flags depending on what external delivery program is used. However, I haven't touched that and none of the entries that came with the standard master.cf file reference Dovecot, so I'm not sure if any of those entries even apply. What I changed to cause Dovecot delivery to be initiated was simply the mailbox_command in postfix/main.cf: mailbox_command = /opt/dovecot/libexec/dovecot/deliver I have been unable to determine what, if any, changes are necessary in the master.cf file to customize what parameters are sent to Dovecot deliver. Hey everyone, Ran into something positively perplexing today. A user came to me and said that this morning when they checked their mail, they got about 120 strange new messages. Upon further inspection, it seems the "new" messages are all addressed to a certain other different user and are all 3 or 4 months old. And looking in that other user's /var/mail/(username) mailbox, I see the same messages that arrived mistakenly. And they're not in the /var/mail mailbox of the user whose desktop computer they ended up on. So it would appear that, possibly, when this user connected to the server, they got someone else's messages! Messages that, in fact, came from an account they don't even have the password to! I'm really curious if anyone has seen something like this before. We're using dovecot-1.0.beta9, and have been since mid-June. I've never seen anything happen like this before. I'm perfectly willing to upgrade to the latest release candidate, but it's hard for me to "upgrade and see if that fixes it", because it happens so rarely and it won't be easy to know empirically. So what I'm really hoping for is confirmation that this is/was a known problem, if in fact it is. Of course, I don't know that this is a dovecot bug, but I could imagine that it might be (maybe a daemon forgets to switch users after one session is closed and another is opened?), so I thought I'd ask. I did see what looked like TLS fixes and login fixes in the changelogs, so it doesn't seem out of the question that such a bug could've existed. Some more information: I checked the user's settings on their desktop computer, where the unexpected messages appear, and sure enough, there is only one POP server account configured there, and it has the correct username. What's more, I asked them what time this happened, and they said probably at 7:00am or maybe a little earlier. Also, I checked the logs for logins from the person whose messages accidentally got downloaded, and it doesn't show them logging in until several hours later. Oh, and there are no log entries for either of the two users in question before that, at least not for over 12 hours before that. The user is running Outlook 2003, with POP3 + TLS access to the mailbox. With auth_cache_size set to a value greater than zero, when our users change passwords their accounts stop working for a few minutes, because they are trying to log in with their new password, but Dovecot is comparing that against the cached old password. It would be nice if an option could be added so that if the login password does not match the cached password, the cache value is dropped and dovecot-auth queries the userDB, but only if the previous login was successful (to avoid frequent queries for bad logins). Maybe this option could be called "auth_cache_relookup" Bill

I was thinking about renaming default_mail_env to something that is more understandable. I'll keep it working for backwards compatibility anyway. How about: # Location for users' mailboxes. [Dovecot] 1.0rc8: another problem? Possibly 64-bit index?

Yesterday I gave a status report about 10.rc8 in production, which mentioned a problem about "Login process died too early..." Timo suggested a patch for logging error messages. I've applied this. Others suggested increasing "login_max_processes_count". That was already way above our likely maximum, but I've doubled it anyway. Today, I've just repeated the trial, but with one significant difference and one significant new problem. The significant difference is that today's machine is not a 32-bit i686 but a 64-bit (and faster) x86_64. The new problem is lots of occurences of: [...]: IMAP([...]): file ../../../src/lib-index/mail-cache-transaction.c: line 709 (mail_cache_add): assertion failed: (fixed_size == (unsigned int)-1 || fixed_size == data_size) [...]: child 4365 (imap) killed with signal 6 and: [...]: IMAP([...]): file ../../../../src/lib-storage/index/index-mail.c: line 105 (index_mail_get_fixed_field): assertion failed: (buffer_get_used_size(buf) == data_size) [...]: child 15009 (imap) killed with signal 6 Naturally, I've backed off quickly. Theoretically, this problem could be attributed to any of the three changes: logging, max processes, different (64-bit) machine. I suspect it's not the "login_max_processes_count" increase. Is it a side-effect of the better logging? (That is, was it always happening but the information simply not getting logged?) Note that our index files (and mail spool (INBOX, folder) areas) are on an NFS (NetApp) shared area accessed by all three classes of our machines: o existing UW-IMAP (which doesn't use the indexes) o yesterday-dovecot (32-bit) o today-dovecot (64-bit) My sneaky suspicion is that this is a subtle 64-bit-ism, either on its own, or in some sort of interaction with an indexes created from yesterday's 32-bit client. (Yes, theoretically, I could try another test to attempt to confirm or eliminate the 32/64 difference. [Dovecot] Received dates problem in Outlook after migration

Hello everyone, I've just started using 1.0-beta3 on Ubuntu Dapper, having migrated from an mbox / UW-IMAP combination to a Maildir / Dovecot one. For some reason the mb2md tool failed to recognise some of my mbox files as valid ones, so I migrated my email by running UW-IMAP, copying my folders to local storage in Evolution, then running Dovecot instead and copying the folders back. All seems OK, except that in Outlook 98 all the emails now have the date/time of their migration, not when they were received. This isn't a problem in Thunderbird or Evolution - but my wife uses Outlook and doesn't wish to switch. I've tried using touch to change the timestamps of the mails in my inbox (in ~/Maildir/cur) but this hasn't had any effect. I've also tried deleting ~/Maildir/dovecot.index and ~/Maildir/dovecot.index.cache but this hasn't made any difference either. Something else in dovecot must be being sent to Outlook as the date / time on these emails. Can anyone suggest what it would be and how I might go about changing it (to, for example, the Received: date on the email header?). Hi, today i've upgrade from beta7 to rc7; i've pop3 with real user (no db or other thing). The config file remain the same. After few hours the master process hang without any messages in log.. Is there a problem on config file? Hi, One of my customers currently experiences a dovecot freeze on random accassions. Trying to figure out what's wrong with no luck. Dovecot is running fine, up until it suddenly stops responding. When i restart dovecot it runs fine again for some time. Sometimes it works for a few days, sometimes just a few hours. There's always a point where it freezes again. Reinstalled dovecot. Fiddled a bit with the auth_worker_max_count and auth_process_size settings. No change in behavior was observed. There's no out of the ordinary cpu or memory use. Any ideas? Floris

[Dovecot] Client giving "Alert: still here" with dovecot

I use Cone as my primary mail client and after some inactivity I keep getting "Alert: still here" when connected to my home/test dovecot server. Have tried with thunderbird leaving a connection inactive for a while and thunderbird gets no warnings. Any ideas what this may be?

Hello, I've searched the documentation for IMAP/POP3 server with proxy feature, but wiki says that this is not fully implemented yet, but wiki page hasnt been updated for a while. So is there any change since then? Because we are looking for a solution to replace the perdition POP3/IMAP proxy in front of the current UW-IMAP servers and we would really appreciate this feature, since the documentation says that proxy implementation in dovecot does not create a process for every user (problem with large number of concurrent users). I'm trying to setup dovecot to use my postfixadmin user accounts on an ubuntu server. dovecot versions: dovecot-common 1.0.beta3-3ubuntu5.3 dovecot-imapd 1.0.beta3-3ubuntu5.3 I have gotten the account up and I can see dovecot query for the password for the user, but I get login failed. In my mail.log I only see this: dovecot: imap-login: Aborted login: user=<user(a)domain.com>, method=PLAIN, rip=IP_ADDR, lip=IP_ADDR, TLS I can't see to find any other information that can help me figure out why it won't accept the password. Hello, I've got some problems about understanding, how to filter my incoming mails. I am using dovecot 1.0.beta3 (ubuntu server) and want to implement a filter, where I can filter all my incoming messages (like the ones from the dovecot ml) to special folders within the mailbox of each user (for each user a special set of filters). Is there a chance to do this in dovecot or have I to use another program? My system works like: Fetchmail fetches mails from two mailservers and deliver them to the users inbox Procmail send them to spamassassin for checking about spam Dovecot provides access to the mailbox with IMAP Hope there is an easy way like module for webmin or something else. I'm currently using maildrop to do delivery, because I like to use it's xfilter to pipe through spamc. I don't see a similar option for dovecot's deliver. Is there something? It would be nice to use deliver, since I use dovecot for reading mail.

A quick status report on how 1.0rc8 behaved in service for a few hours with several hundred simultaneous users, at a site very new to dovecot. Oh, and a question at the end. Summary: Reasonable for a first shot but one significant problem, requiring backing off. Background: We have a long-established UW-IMAP service for a user population of about 20,000 based on a few Linux (Redhat) machines running IMAP/POP and inbound delivery. We try to ensure, but cannot guarantee, that all activity for a given user takes place within one machine. Each machine mounts the INBOX area ("/var/spool/mail"; traditional UNIX mbox) via NFS with tight NFS arguments ("noac,actimeo=0", etc.) and similarly mounts the users' folder areas which are subdirs of their home directories. (We know that Mark Crispin recommends against NFS for UW-IMAP, but we seem to have been OK.) There is also some processing: .forward->"| procmail"->folder-or-inbox Each machine typically has several hundred simultaneous IMAP connections. This has basically worked well, but the UW-IMAP loading has been heavy. The plan: In an ideal world, I would like to restructure the above. But our world is not ideal, so we have to stay with the structure. But we are looking for a transparent (user perspective) migration to dovecot. The dovecot experience: Yesterday, I quietly adjusted a DNS entry to redirect one of the live email hostnames at an additional machine in the "farm", running dovecot 1.0rc8, including deliver/LDA (and taking into account some post-rc7 dovecot changes in this area). On an earlier, smaller-scale test, one problem had been some periods of "temporary authentication failures". Increasing "login_processes_count" and "login_max_processes_count" (each by a factor of 8) seems to have fixed this, and I'm not aware of any problems in that area yesterday. It basically went well. But just over two hours hours later I had to back off, because of a significant dovecot problem, namely that dovecot crashed, almost silently. The only traces of this event in the log file seem to be: Oct 10 16:26:12 [...] dovecot: child 24525 (login) returned error 89 Oct 10 16:26:14 [...] dovecot: Login process died too early - shutting down Any thoughts? [Dovecot] Issues with Dovecot/Pam/nss_ldap

Hello all. I have experienced an unusual behaviour from dovecot which I believe to be related to some interaction between dovecot and nss_ldap/Pam. Centos/Postfix/mbox(es)/Openldap/dovecot. The box is using PAM with ldap, and is also running BIND, SAMBA, and DHCPD. Dovecot 1.0rc2 from source. I left dovecot at the default, to use PAM for authentication and guess the mailbox. This worked well, except during peak times, dovecot would "hang", waiting an exceptionally long time after connecting before doing authentication. The users would report this as "Send/receive stuck on 64%" or something like that. During this time, I would note a number of <defunct> dovecot processes in ps. Increasing the number of idle login proceses in the pool to ridiculously high values (30) did not affect the symptom. Restarting dovecot would immediately resolve the issue. I believe this to be related somehow to dovecot's PAM interaction, because I was able to work around it by setting dovecot to talk directly to LDAP. Googling found isolated reports of similar behaviour in the Fedora Core 3 bug list at Redhat. It's rare I can help in project as important as dovecot, so I'm willing to spend some time tracking this down. What information can I provide to help? Thanks Ejay Hire

Having looked at this again, I think I have a hypothesis: 1. Outlook is ignoring the date/timestamps on the files in my Maildirs 2. The file names of my transferred files follow a similar pattern (they start with near-identical numbers) 3. Dovecot's file naming scheme for mails must relate somehow to the date that they were created / transferred / received 4. If I can therefore **rename** the files correctly to reflect their sending date then I can fix my problem Does this make sense? Can anyone point me in the direction of a spec that says how Dovecot names its files? The reason I think this is because we have a cluster of servers that do search indexing for our IMAP mailboxes, and due to a bug this week, those servers started slamming one of our IMAP servers with rapid login failures. Dovecot crashed frequently with "Login process died too early - shutting down" while this was occurring. And then also under normal operation we were seeing Dovecot crash about once per day on random servers when that server was under a heavy IMAP load. To work around this we switched to "login_process_per_connection = no" and bumped up our file descritor limit ("ulimit -n"). No crashes since. But probably still needs to be fixed in the code. Bill

[Dovecot] POP +OK CR LF Question

HI. I just finished installing a new mail server running CentOS Ver 4. and I am running sendmail with devecot 0.99.11. Everything is working fine except for a customer of mine is using a tool that does pop requests. And his tool is failing waiting on a CR LF in the +OK. I did a small hex dump of my old pop and the dovecot pop and he is right. Docevot POP does not end its +OK with a CR LF. I looked around but I don't see where I can make that change. Can anyone please help. Thanks

But when I try to use LDA (even without sieve), I got a delivery failture. I just setup a new mail server with maildir and Dovecot RC 8 I noticed that when I login via POP3 with a username that do not have a maildir yet Dovecot logs this line: Oct 11 11:46:52 gw dovecot: stat(/var/spool/mail/xxxx/) failed: No such file or directory After that Dovecot correctly creates the maildir structure Wouldn't it be better to log a message like "Creating maildir structure for user xxxxxx"? Hi, We have been using Courier-imap for a few years. I am always in the process of reviewing competing software, and hence my interest in Dovecot. Question: If email files are moved between IMAP folders (on the same IMAP server or a different one) or deleted using shell scripts, how does this impact Dovecot's indexes or its method of keeping track of the email? How likely is index or file corruption or race condition? An example, is the centralized removal of mail in all users' Junk folder older than 30 days. We use Maildir format and Dovecot 1.0-RC7 with Mysql. We have about 150 users. Thanks. Craig

[Dovecot] POP3 - Mark messages as read

Hi all. I have a little problem with Dovecot. My POP3 users can retrieve their emails without problem, but if they have "Leave mail in server" (or similar) active in their clients, their mboxes doesn't get updated marking those messages as read. If I access their mboxes locally with "mail -f username" I can see every message marked as non-read, something that never happened before when I used qpopper. I should note that when they retrieve their emails afterwards those previously received doesn't arrive again (correct behavior). My setup is: RHEL 4 Update 4 dovecot-0.99.11-4.EL4 (last version in RH Updates) mbox format, external POP3, local only IMAP (Squirrelmail) I couldn't find references to this in /etc/dovecot.conf, the FAQ or via web searching. Should I upgrade to dovecot-1.x to solve this? Even if RH doesn't support it yet? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Jose Gomiz

On my first POP3 login, all is fine, but any subsequent logins seem to fail with the message: dovecot: Oct 10 11:04:31 Error: Maximum number of mail processes exceeded In the dovecot log file. I'm also oddly seeing the message: Oct 10 11:01:05 popbkup pop3-login: [ID 799321 mail.crit] Dovecot version mismatch: Master is v1.0.rc7, login is v1.0.rc8 (if you don't care, set version_ignore=yes) in the messages file on my system. Don't really understand that one, and I've done a complete shutdown of all dovecot or *-login *-auth processes prior to the "make install" for RC8. The only possible config file change I can think of that might've caused this (that was mentioned in the release notes for RC8) is the default_mail_env value, however, I believe mine is fine: mbox:~/mail:INBOX=/var/mail/%1u/%1.1u/%u This is for an actual mailbox with a two character hash for the maildrop directory. I was looking forward to giving RC8 a spin, but I've had to revert back to RC7 for now. Hello, I'm trying to use "deliver" as a LDA for some users. I found the page http://wiki.dovecot.org/LDA where i read that i can use the ".forward" file in the user HOME directory. However, when i try, i get the following error in the maillog file : ... deliver(...): mbox: We need root IMAP folder, but can't find it or HOME environment ...deliver(...): Failed to create storage for 'user' with mail 'mbox:/var/mail/user' where "user" is the user login. How can i fix this error ? My aim by using "deliver" as a LDA is to force a quota for the mailbox user. Is this the right thing to do to achieve this ? (Using dovecot 1.0 RC7 on Fedora Core 5) <scene set> Hitherto we have used UW-IMAP on a "farm" of Linux machines mounting NFS from a NetApp. (The UW-IMAP author doesn't like use of NFS, but with careful use of NFS mount arguments ('noac,actimeo=0' etc.) and trying to ensure that all activity for a given user takes place within one machine in the farm, we seem to have been OK.) We have also used UW-IMAP's 'tmail' (in sendmail.cf) and 'dmail' (from any user procmail recipes), so that access to the INBOX has been consistently UW-IMAP software. We are now considering doing a transparent migration to dovecot to improve performance. </scene> --- First: a general question: To complement the UW->dovecot migration of the IMAP daemon (reading the INBOX and folders), ought I to do a similar delivery-side migration from [UW] tmail/dmail to [dovecot] 'deliver'? It would feel safer this way, but maybe I worry too much... --- Second: "deliver" seems to add an unconditional "From " line at the start of each delivery. From sendmail, using the 'n' flag, "Mlocal F=...n..." that is OK. (Although I'm not convinced that "dovecot.deliver", nor its two-space separator (emphasis on "two") from the following date are ideal. Nor, come to that line's lack of "@somewhere".) But from a procmail recipe, I end up with two "From " lines. Surely this is incorrect. How can this be reduced to one? Here is a patch which adds mailboxcmp() and mailboxcasecmp() functions, similar to mailbox_equals(). Names were chosen to match strcmp() and strcasecmp(). I needed this for Johaness Berg's dspam plugin. It watches a folder "SPAM" and forcing this to be uppercase is unacceptable for me. (I also had to modify the plugin to use the new routine.) It's against dovecot-1.0.beta8 but should be trivial to port to CVS. -frank

Hi, I'm trying to use dovecot-1.0.rc7. Before I've used dovecot-1.0 from nightly cvs build of August 08, 2006. It worked perfectly, on Linux 64-bit, you can see spec and patches at http://www.sisyphus.ru/srpm/dovecot/ When I tried to upgrade to rc7 and to recent nightly cvs builds with the same configuration and patches (provided necessary adaptations), it builds O.K, but can not move messages from folder to folder. I've tried the following mail clients: thunderbird-1.5.0.7, evolution-2.0.2, sylpheed-claws-2.0 and KMail-1.7.1 (all from Centos-4.4). KMail refuses to copy (or to move) multiple selected messages, saying:" Error while copying messages.Connection to Server Closed Unexpectedly ...". Evolution is not able to open folders at 3-rd level (like dovecot/2006/09), or it is so slow that I was not able to test moving/copying messages in it. Sylpheed-claws died whan I tried this message copying. OK, I know I promised rc8 today in my recent mails, but it's way too late and writing changes to NEWS file takes time. :) So I guess it'll happen tomorrow then. In the mean time it would be nice if you'd test that I didn't break anything badly with my recent changes. Especially when I changed the password verifications to detect if the password is in hex or base64 encoding based on the string length. This also allowed me to make LDAP-MD5 and PLAIN-MD5 use the same password verification function. [Dovecot] Maildir++ quota inconsistency

I've found what I think is an inconsistency in the Maildir quota implementation. According to the Maildir++ quota specification at: http://www.inter7.com/courierimap/README.maildirquota.html Maildir++ quota can be specified as maximum size, or maximum number of messages, or even both. The size specification is supposed to be in bytes. So I could use '10000000S' to set a quota of around 10MB. Now, the Exim MTA has an independent Maildir++ quota implementation, and it follows the specification, so if I set the quota in Exim to 10000000, it will work perfectly with sqwebmail and courier-imap. However, it doesn't play well with Dovecot, because Dovecot chooses to interpret the quota as kilobytes, rather than bytes. An example: If I set the quota to 10240 in Dovecot, it creates a maildirsize file with the value 10240000 in it. If I then set the quota to 10M in Exim, Exim calculates that as 10485760. It detects that the value in the maildirsize file is wrong, and recreates the file with a quota of 10485760 bytes. Exim's behaviour is consistent with the courier family of packages, as well as the specification, so I'm venturing to say that Dovecot's implementation is slightly non-standard, and should be fixed so that the quota setting is interpreted as bytes, and not as kilobytes, to avoid a situation like the above. -- Anand

Then I tried authentication in plain text and everything works fine... So, does dovecot crypt SHA1 using other method? [Dovecot] Dovecot behaviour when the server's file system fails (possible feature request)

I've met a couple of times a situation, that there is something wrong with the mail server's operating system / file system, but Dovecot is still working, although it cannot any more access the mailbox files. The result is, that the imap mail client in the workstation automatically synchronises with the improperly empty-looking mailbox, effectively deleting everything previously loaded into the workstation's mail client (eg. Outlook Express) when using imap protocol. This is very annoying, especially when the workstation isn't connected with a high-speed-enough connection, since after the server is properly brought up again, reloading all the contents of the improperly emptied mail client may take considerable amount of time. This is especially the case, if the workstation has kind of mobile connection (eg. gprs) with very limited bandwith -in that case the sychronizing of eg. 20MB account may take at least from half an hour to more than one hour, and in some cases (eg. gprs roaming) also cost considerable amount of money (gprs data transfer may cost from eg. 5 to over 10 euros or dollars per megabyte, when roaming outside the phone operator's own network). So, is there currently a way to configure Dovecot in a way it would recognize that the mailbox actually is not accessible, and in that case it would return an error message to the mail client instead of returning "empty mailbox"? Of course, a smart enough mail client might also ask something from the user, but that seems not be the case either... If this behavious cannot be changed with the current configuration options, then a kind feature request to the developer: Would it be possible to change the behaviour of Dovecot when it actually can not access the mailbox files? Although the actual problem in this case is outside Dovecot, this kind of improvement would greatly improve the error tolerance of the whole system. -- TiN

Hi, I just upgraded a 0.99 installation to 1.0rc7 (going from mbox to maildir along the way, but that's another story), and I'm seeing a rather fast fd quick; I already had to restart dovecot once, after a few hours. What is leaked are pipes, left open on the master dovecot process while the other end is long gone. I can't tell right now if it happens for every single login process spawned (either pop3 or imap), but at least a lot of them. FWIW, I'm running dovecot 1.0rc7 on NetBSD 2.0.3_STABLE. Hi, dovecot 1.0 rc6 Can someone please advise on my interpretation of the following logs, Users are reporting duplicate email coming through to their inbox. (user@domain replaced actual username and domain) There are also reports of the connection seemingly freezing whilst the emails are being downloaded (pausing at a certain amount of kB then continuing after a minute or 2). info: pop3-login: Login: user=<user@domain>, method=PLAIN, rip=89.192.*.**, lip=172.16.22.10, TLS info: POP3(user@domain): Disconnected top=0/0, retr=4/183443, del=0/313, size=83779942 info: pop3-login: Login: user=<user@domain>, method=PLAIN, rip=89.192.*.**, lip=172.16.22.10, TLS info: POP3(user@domain): Disconnected top=0/0, retr=3/183443, del=0/322, size=84201570 In the first instance the user downloaded 4 emails totalling 183443 bytes leaving 313 messages on the server. (outlook 2003 set to leave a copy of messages on the server) second instance user downloaded 3 emails, exactly the same amount of bytes and left 322 messages on the server. Does this mean the users connection was interrupted when downloading the original emails and they attempted to be sent again a second time? how could it be that there are 9 emails left on the server if only 3 extra were downloaded? [Dovecot] coding techniques

Whilst debugging a problem in dovecot LDA over the last few days, I came across two different issues in coding techniques. (Note: Please don't take this negatively; my intent is both positive and constructive!) The front page of the website www.dovecot.org says: "it uses several coding techniques to avoid most of the common pitfalls" So I hope it is OK to follow the spirit of that with some suggestions. The two issues I encountered both seem to be fairly easy holes to fall into, and yet equally easy to avoid in the first place by using established C practices. Firstly, many 'if' statements having a single statement (whether in then or else part) are currently written in a short-cut fashion: if (condition) statement 1; else statement 2; This, though technically legal, is potentially lethal when inserting (say) debugging statements. Without diligence it is all to easy to produce: if (condition) debug 1a; statement 1; debug 1b; else debug 2a; statement 2; debug 2b; A simple edit that looks, layout-wise, as if it would do the right thing (and do in Python!); but actually radically changes the execution flow. (This is left as an exercise to the reader... to demonstrate the point.) Could I suggest that the relevant brackets be always used as a matter of course? Something like: if (condition) { statement 1; } else { statement 2; } Then the insertion of debug statements doesn't inflict surprise. (No, I didn't fall into this hole. But it is a trap waiting to happen.) Secondly, code duplication. To give one example: 'get_var_expand_table()' appears in both 'deliver/deliver.c' and 'master/mail-process.c'. (There is also a similar looking function in 'auth/auth-request.c'.) Perhaps consideration should be given to merging such instances. For instance, my woes with "%i"-expansion being treated differently in mail-reading and mail-delivery would likely never have arisen if common code had been used. I hope that helps (constructively!). Help! Our students are back and they are pounding my dovecot server to death (ie "Login process died too early - shutting down" or "too many open files" type crash). I've had my third crash today. My setup: Solaris 10, imap and imaps, 3K users coming in via horde webmail. My current connection settings are: login_max_processes_count = 2048 login_max_connections = 4096 Q: Does raising these limits actually make my problem worse or better? Are there any other variables that I should change to prevent the "too many open files"? Suggestions? Jeff Earickson Colby College

Users who have their sent folder on the imap server report that sometimes a sent message is saved locally instead of on the server. This is the error from evolution: Error while performing operation. Failed to append to whoever@imap.server:Sent: Server unexpectedly disconnected: Unknown error Appending to local `Sent' folder instead.. We're seeing this with more than one client: evolution (linux) and thunderbird (OS X). It only happens occasionally but often enough to be annoying. It could be because the user's Sent folders are in their home directories which are NFS mounted. Are there any dovecot settings which might help? Thanks -- Ian

[Dovecot] Lost email (inbox) TWICE

I have been losing my inbox. It happened twice. (2 days ago and just half an hour ago) I am using RHEL 4.0 with dovecot-0.99.11-4.EL4 System uses sendmail + procmail, dovecot is up and running. Here is how it happened: I was using Mozilla Firefox with IMAP. At the same time, I logged in from Squirrel Webmail in IMAP to the same account. Squirrel mail did not show my inbox contents. And I turned back to Thunderbird and it said, ' an error has occurred and logged to system log' and INBOX WAS LOST! squirrelmail 1.4.6 and mozilla thunderbird version 1.5.0.7 I checked server log, I see I log in but there are no further logs. This happened 2 days ago, I was wondering what the hell happened. I did not have any issues before. However recently we had a hard drive crash and all home folders are restored from backups. I assume it can be related to this. My inbox and imap folders are all in mbox format. I believe dovecot could not write to log or had something unexpected which lead to loss of inbox. There were no configuration issues and all mail system including dovecot were working fine. Now it works fine as well, but I believe it will lose inbox folder again. Has anybody experienced this? Any suggestions to recover inbox? File was reset to 0 bytes (could be deleted as well), when i did 'stat' on file, there was a file with 1 new message, all were lost. Thank you. Sezer

Hello, We run dovecot 1.0.rc6-1 on a debian system. The user auth db is postgresql and the storage folders are on a NFS partition. Latelly every 2 days the authentification hangs and i see in the logs: Sep 21 10:04:22 c005 dovecot: login: tried to change state 0 -> 17808 (if you can't login at all, see src/lib/fdpass.c) What is the problem ? Hi, I'm still looking at a large (under 100,000) user deployment of Dovecot, with a NetApp NFS server as the back-end storage. I've read a few remarks about needing the latest NFS patches from Trond Myklebust to prevent lock-ups. My management would be happiest with a vendor-supported distribution (and especially Suse Linux Enterprise Server 9 or 10). We will be running on an x86 platform. Under these circumstances, which operating system/distribution would you choose? And why? Hi, We are using Dovecot with maildir, and the mail client requests flags, internaldate, and uid for all messages on folder open, which on average takes 3 seconds, but for large folders is much longer. It seems like I want mail_cache_fields to include "flags", but which date corresponds to internaldate? date.received? Is UID always cached for messages, or does it have to read through the directory to get them? I migrated from Courier to Dovecot, and today I notice that all my "date received" fields in my client (apple mail) show as the approx date/time of the migration rather than when the emails were received from the smtp server. Is this expected behavior? I normally sort by received date rather than sent -- since I don't care when someone sends something as much as when i get it. But those fields are totally bogus now. .tim

I've just installed dovecot on FreeBSD 6.1. Running MySQL 5.0 on another server. Postfix version 2.3.3 Dovecot starts then exits with no error messages. I've run it as a daemon and on the command line with -F option How do I run it in debug mode so I can figure out why it does not stay running. Hi All, Dovecot 1.0rc2. Currently having a problem with Outlook clients popping up with the error; "Your IMAP server has closed the connection. This may occur if you have left the connection idle for to long" I initially though this would be the imap_client_workarounds = outlook-idle option, but this is currently set and always has been. I dont think this is a known issue that has been fixed with newer releases, as we have rc2 on another server that does not have this problem. Any help thankfully recieved. Regards, Mark

Dear Dovecot Mail List, I have used Dovecot for quite a while to service remote users on my SOHO network. A local not-for-profit asked about getting their own dedicated domain name for mail. I followed: http://www.howtoforge.com/linux_postfix_virtual_hosting to set up a virtual, but the article leaves out system accounts and I have not been able to access both system and virtual users at the same time. I have the following lines: default_mail_env = maildir:/var/spool/vmail/%d/%n/ which, when commented out, works for system users default_mail_env = mbox:~/mail/:INBOX=/var/spool/mail/%u which, when commented out, which works for virtual users If both are uncommented, only system users work. Wiki-ing and Googling, I learned that namespace could be applied to the problem. Here is the namespace from the configuration file. #namespace private { # Hierarchy separator to use. You should use the same separator for all # namespaces or some clients get confused. '/' is usually a good one. # The default however depends on the underlying mail storage format. #separator = # Prefix required to access this namespace. We (the Math department at the U of Wisconsin) recently switched over from another server to dovecot One thing that a lot of people here do is set up an on-line form that sends them email. They use formmail for this. I have them edit their procmail config so that all the messages go into a particular mail folder.... So far so good. With our old system, all messages in a folder were kept in a single file. With dovecot, they go into a couple of different directories. This is problematic because we often need to convert the form field data to csv values so it can be imported into a spreadsheet. So a professor can create an on-line form and end up with the data from it in an Excell spreadsheet. Slick (when it works). I understand that I can make dovecot store messages in a file by leaving the trailing slash off when specifying the folder name. Sample procmail segment: :0: * Subject:.*\[feedback\] .feedback But I can't get the feedback folder to show up in the list of IMAP folders in my mail client. I've tried Outlook Express and Thunderbird. If I put the slash at the end, it creates a .feedback folder and then I can see it in my mail client. But then I can't export it to cvs. Anybody know why I can't see the .feeback folder? Or maybe somebody has a good way to get data from the body of messages stored in a dovecot folder, for example, .feedback/cur/ and .feedback/new/.

(Using rc7 code) There seems to be a bug in rsh/ssh-style connections. For reference, on a normal imap connection (port 143, 993, etc.) things are OK. The imap session ends (from a client-end command "a logout") thus: --- a logout * BYE Logging out a OK Logout completed. Connection closed by foreign host. unix-prompt% --- But when the connection had been established using rsh or ssh to the servers's "/etc/rimapd" which contains: exec /usr/dovecot/sbin/dovecot --exec-mail imap the session ends thus: --- a logout * BYE Logging out a OK Logout completed. imap(<username>): Info: Disconnected: Logged out unix-prompt% --- Note that additional, protocol-breaking, "imap(...): Info ..." line. This seems to be coming from "imap/cmd-logout.c" calling: client_disconnect(client, "Logged out"); which in turn ("imap/client.c") does: i_info("Disconnected: %s", reason); On the imap connection, this "i_info(...)" output goes (correctly) to syslog, but on the rsh/ssh connection this output seems to go to something like stdout. This strongly suggests a bug: an inconsistency between the two connection types, possibly regarding the way that stdout, stderr, syslog etc. are initialised, assigned, adjusted, etc. -- : David Lee I.T. [Dovecot] Bug: auth_cache breaks master password feature

When you set auth_cache_size to a value greater than zero, it breaks the master password feature in Dovecot. It appears that during a cache hit, Dovecot attempts to query the userdb for use the master user's home directory and other settings, rather than querying for the userdb settings of the user that the master was trying to log in for... causing the login to fail. Perhaps caching the userdb settings in addition to the passdb settings (since that is on the TODO list) would indirectly fix this problem. Bill

Hi, I'm getting 'no inbox for user' error. Set up sendmail, and can send and receive mail using Webmin/Usermin both to internal addresses and external ones. But Dovecot gives the no inbox error. I've tried telnetting in and get: +OK dovecot ready. USER myob -ERR Unknown command USER myob +UK PASS <password> +OK Logged in. -ERR No INBOX for user. No idea why the first USER command gives an error. And, of course, when I try using Evolution I get 'Cannot get POP summary'. [Dovecot] Dovecot as LDA

FreeBSD 6.1-RELEASE-p8 postfix-current-2.4.20060903,3 dovecot-1.0.r7 I am experiencing a problem with dovecot as an LDA. It will not deliver mail unless the mail directory is chmod'd to 1777. Below is an example of the log file output. The dovecot.log file had over a hundred entries similar to this: deliver(gerard): Error: open(/var/mail/.temp.scorpio.seibercom.net.1123.cd38cd4d82e1368f) failed: Permission denied deliver(gerard): Error: file_lock_dotlock() failed with mbox file /var/mail/gerard: Permission denied Obviously the /var/log/maillog had similar fail warnings. By changing the permission to 1777 on the /var/mail directory and running postsuper -r ALL, I was able to get the mail delivered. What I am trying to determine is if I really should have those settings on the directory, or if I have something configured wrong in either postfix or dovecot. Postfix will deliver mail without any problem so I think it has to do with dovecot although I am not sure what. -- Gerard

I have set up quota:dict with the proxy::quotadict option and i'm not using dovecot LDA. My quota table is filled with records like username: pveerman(a)nemo.kabelfoon.net path: 0 current: 0 and the personal max-quota reported by the client is okay, but the current-quota is 0. What am I doing wrong here? Peter

Hi, I'm quite new to dovecot but already quite satisfied. Your documentation in the wiki is great but on quota + mysql it is not very clear. Because of the previously mentioned I have got the following note to make which you will hopefully use to adjust your wiki documentation on per-user-quota + mysql. I've searched your mail archive as good as possible and found no messages on this. If already messages have been exactly on this topic I want to apologize for sending this one. The notes I want to make is about this page: http://wiki.dovecot.org/Quota I'm using postfix + postfixadmin & mysql and dovecot (previously I used courier-imap instead of dovecot). The problems I ran in to was with setting up the per-user quota, as the explanation at the wiki is quite vague. For instance, the dict plugin is used to keep the quota counters in the mysql backend but only one single line shows how to set-up a per user quota. Setting up a per user quota where the max-quota is stored in mysql should be made making use of this setting: ========== user_query = SELECT home, uid, gid, 'dirsize:storage=' || quota_bytes AS quota FROM users WHERE userid = '%u' ========== nowhere is mentioned that this should also! be set: =========== protocol imap { mail_plugins = quota imap_quota } protocol pop3 { mail_plugins = quota } =========== the second point I want to make is that the mysqlquery is incorrect as || does not do the job of joining the two strings. Secondly is dovecot making use of kilobytes instead of bytes like postfix (and postfixadmin) does. For this I have found the following solution: ========== user_query = SELECT maildir, 125 AS uid, 125 AS gid,\ CONCAT('dirsize:storage=', ROUND( mailbox.quota / 1024 ) ) AS quota \ FROM mailbox WHERE username = '%u' AND active = '1' ========== Here I select the quota field from the mailbox table.
