[Dovecot] Duplicate header extension keywords
by Rainer Ophoven 07 Nov '06

07 Nov '06

I'm running dovecot supporting imaps and pop3s in a small home-office environment on a Linux-box, kernel 2.4.33, with postfix-2.3.4, amavisd-new and spamassassin. I use Thunderbird as mail-client on Windows XP. ever since upgrading to RC10 I every now and then find these error messages in doveocot.log: Error: IMAP(rainer): Corrupted index file /home/rainer/Maildir/.software.Dovecot/dovecot.index: Duplicate header extension keywords and close by: Error: IMAP(rainer): Fixed index file /home/rainer/Maildir/.software.Dovecot/dovecot.index: first_recent_uid_lowwater 1952 -> 1951 Misconfiguration or where is the problem? -- in diesem Sinne, Rainer

[Dovecot] Corrupted index cache file dovecot.index.cache: invalid record size
by bofh list 07 Nov '06

07 Nov '06

Hi, Our dovecot setup consists of two hosts running dovecot-1.0.beta9 with Maildir/indices stored on NFS(noac,actimeo=0 used). I am seeing these messages at times - but no real problems on the client side. Is this something to worry about? dovecot: Oct 17 10:33:31 Error: IMAP(user): Corrupted index cache file mailstore/user/Maildir/.mail.incoming/dovecot.index.cache: invalid record size Thanks!

[Dovecot] RC10 errors
by Eric Rostetter 07 Nov '06

07 Nov '06

I just installed a limited test of RC10 last night. So far, all is great except for errors being logged for one user (out of about 150 users total). This one user has not yet complained or anything, but the log file has repeated entries of the following format for him (host and username changed to protect the guilty/innocent): Oct 24 06:13:02 mail dovecot: IMAP(username): file mbox-sync-rewrite.c: line 405 (mbox_sync_read_and_move): assertion failed: (need_space == (uoff_t)-mails[idx].space) Oct 24 06:13:02 mail1 dovecot: child 18235 (imap) killed with signal 6 I find it most interesting that only 1 out of 150+ users is getting this error... And again, no complaints from the user. Setup is: wu-imap mbox files in /var/spool/mail (exported via NFS, but local to the dovecot server). Mail in ~/mail/ (NFS mount, foreign to devecot server). Indexes in /var/dovecot/indexes (local to dovecot server with no NFS at all). -- Eric Rostetter The Department of Physics The University of Texas at Austin Go Longhorns!

[Dovecot] rc13 soon
by Timo Sirainen 07 Nov '06

07 Nov '06

I think I'll just start making new releases whenever I've fixed something important. You'll have a while to report more bugs and then I'll make rc13 release, maybe in about 5 hours or maybe tomorrow. I updated already the nightly snapshot if you want to test the upcoming rc13. Changes so far: + deliver: If we're executing as a normal system user, get the HOME environment from passwd if it's not set. This makes it possible to run deliver from .forward. - Older compilers caused LDAP authentication to crash - Dying LDAP connections weren't handled exactly correctly in rc11, although it seemed to work usually - Fixed crashes and memory leaks with AUTHENTICATE command - Fixed crashes and leaks with IMAP/POP3 proxying

[Dovecot] 1.0rc10 proxy memory usage problem
by Laurent Papier 07 Nov '06

07 Nov '06

Hi, I have a rather large dovecot setup (4 proxy only servers and 21 IMAP/POP3 servers) in production for 3 days now. The memory usage on my proxy servers only grows over time. It looks like a memory leak somewhere in dovecot. I have a RRD graph available on demand. Any advise on the configuration ? Timo, I have strace a process before the manual restart. If it can help just ask for. My configuration : Linux kernel 2.6. [Dovecot] rc12 dovecot-auth core dump with ldap
by Chris Wakelin 07 Nov '06

07 Nov '06

Hi, I've got a core dump during initialisation when I use 1.0.rc12 and LDAP with authenticated binds in Solaris. It worked OK in 1.0.rc10. Here's the non-commented entries in dovecot-ldap.conf - some of which are probably redundant :) :- hosts = xxx.yyy.rdg.ac.uk auth_bind = yes auth_bind_userdn = "cn=%n,cn=users,dc=xxx,dc=yyy,dc=rdg,dc=ac,dc=uk" ldap_version = 3 base = "dc=xxx,dc=yyy,dc=rdg,dc=ac,dc=uk" deref = never scope = subtree user_filter = (&(objectClass=User)(sAMAccountName=%n)) pass_filter = (&(objectClass=User)(sAMAccountName=%n)) Strangely, it crashes in a different place when I don't define the scope, so I'm guessing it's something to do with reading parameters. backtrace with "scope = subtree" : #0 0x1ec94 in db_ldap_init ( config_path=0x5bc08 "/opt/RDGdovect/etc/dovecot-ldap.conf") at db-ldap.c:661 661 if (*conn->set.user_global_gid == '\0') (gdb) bt #0 0x1ec94 in db_ldap_init ( config_path=0x5bc08 "/opt/RDGdovect/etc/dovecot-ldap.conf") at db-ldap.c:661 #1 0x246e8 in passdb_ldap_preinit (auth_passdb=0x5bbe8, args=0x5bc08 "/opt/RDGdovect/etc/dovecot-ldap.conf") at passdb-ldap.c:486 #2 0x2328c in passdb_preinit (auth=0x5b838, driver=0xffbefec0 "ldap", args=0x0, id=332176) at passdb.c:169 #3 0x17648 in auth_preinit () at auth.c:45 #4 0x1ff0c in drop_privileges () at main.c:195 #5 0x2024c in main (argc=0, argv=0xffbefb54) at main.c:319 and with scope left commented out: #0 0xff0cf600 in strcasecmp () from /usr/lib/libc.so.1 (gdb) bt #0 0xff0cf600 in strcasecmp () from /usr/lib/libc.so.1 #1 0x1df58 in scope2str (str=0x0) at db-ldap.c:116 #2 0x1ec4c in db_ldap_init ( config_path=0x5bc08 "/opt/RDGdovect/etc/dovecot-ldap.conf") at db-ldap.c:648 #3 0x246e8 in passdb_ldap_preinit (auth_passdb=0x5bbe8, args=0x5bc08 "/opt/RDGdovect/etc/dovecot-ldap.conf") at passdb-ldap.c:486 #4 0x2328c in passdb_preinit (auth=0x5b838, driver=0xffbefec0 "ldap", args=0x0, id=332176) at passdb.c:169 #5 0x17648 in auth_preinit () at auth.c:45 #6 0x1ff0c in drop_privileges () at main.c:195 #7 0x2024c in main (argc=0, argv=0xffbefb54) at main.c:319 If I don't define "deref" then I get an error in the dovecot log (but no crash) :- dovecot: Nov 07 12:36:45 Error: auth(default): LDAP: Unknown deref option 'subtree' I'll keep digging and see if I can find the cause, but has anybody else seen this? [Dovecot] suspected bug in dovecot-ldap setup?
by Pedro Venda 07 Nov '06

07 Nov '06

Hi everyone, [first post: long and boring. beware!] I've been working on a virtual multidomain MX server with pop3 access. Accounting for users/domains is done via OpenLDAP with the Jamm[1] schema and dovecot is 1.0rc10 (dovecot-1.0-0_27.rc10.el4.at fetched as RPM from atrpms.net for CentOS 4.4). I intended to have authenticated binds but there was a problem with the user_filter directive being ignored: user_filter = (&(objectClass=JammMailAccount)(mail=%n@%d)(accountActive=TRUE) (delete=FALSE)) dovecot: Oct 26 16:20:58 Info: auth(default): client in: AUTH 1 PLAIN service=IMAP secured lip=::ffff:192.168.0.5 rip=::ffff:192.168.0.69 resp=<hidden> dovecot: Oct 26 16:20:58 Info: auth(default): ldap(dave@info.test,::ffff:192.168.0.69): bind search: base=o=hosting,dc=example,dc=com scope=subtree filter= **(&(objectClass=posixAccount(uid=dave(a)info.test))** dovecot: Oct 26 16:20:58 Info: auth(default): ldap(dave@info.test,::ffff:192.168.0.69): unknown user dovecot: Oct 26 16:20:59 Info: auth(default): client out: FAIL 1 user=dave(a)info.test dovecot: Oct 26 16:20:59 Info: imap-login: Disconnected: user=<dave(a)info.test>, method=PLAIN, rip=::ffff:192.168.0.69, lip=::ffff:192.168.0.5, TLS (nevermind the data, it's test only) As you can see from the info file, the search filter used was being (&(objectClass=posixAccount(uid=dave(a)info.test)) and not (&(objectClass=JammMailAccount)(mail=dave(a)info.test)(accountActive=TRUE) (delete=FALSE)). I sorted this out by trying to enable auth_bind_userdn: auth_bind_userdn = mail=%n@%d,jvd=%d,o=hosting,dc=example,dc=com Now, the login worked well and the debug info is as follows: dovecot: Oct 27 12:01:48 Info: auth(default): client in: AUTH 1 PLAIN service=IMAP lip=::ffff:192.168.0.5 rip=::ffff:192.168.0.69 resp=AGRhdmVAaW5mb y50ZXN0AFRlbXAuMTIz dovecot: Oct 27 12:01:48 Info: auth(default): client out: OK 1 user=dave(a)info.test dovecot: Oct 27 12:01:48 Info: auth(default): master in: REQUEST 1 10634 1 dovecot: Oct 27 12:01:48 Info: auth(default): ldap(dave@info.test,::ffff:192.168.0.69): base=o=hosting,dc=example,dc=com scope=subtree filter=(&(objectClass=JammMailAccount)(mail=dave(a)info.test) (accountActive=TRUE)(delete=FALSE)) fields=mailbox dovecot: Oct 27 12:01:48 Info: auth(default): master out: USER 1 dave(a)info.test mail=info.test/dave/ uid=5000 gid=5000 (nevermind the debug data, passwords, etc. it's test only) In this case, the search filter is ok: (&(objectClass=JammMailAccount)(mail=dave(a)info.test)(accountActive=TRUE) (delete=FALSE)) So aparently, the auth_bind_userdn directive that supposedly adds a performance gain by sparing one bind request, seems to interfere with the user_filter directive. I suspect this might be a bug, so here's my report. Is this a new issue? Thanks for surviving this far through this post, Best regards, Pedro Venda. [Dovecot] Store outgoing mail in users mailbox
by Mark Ruys 07 Nov '06

07 Nov '06

This might be a MTA question, but because I use Dovecot as an LDA, maybe some can help me here. Our users would like that outgoing mail is automatically saved in some folder, say Sent. We use Postfix with virtual domains, Maildir and Dovecot+Sieve as LDA. Outgoing mail is relayed by our imap-server (with authentification of course, no open relay). Most people seem to advice Postfix sender_bcc_maps and Dovecot's deliver with the -m argument. But I can't get it work. I tried: In master.cf: dovecot-archive unix - n n - - pipe flags=DRhu user=mailowner:mailowner argv=/usr/libexec/dovecot/deliver -d ${recipient} -m Sent In main.cf: sender_bcc_maps = hash:/etc/postfix/sender_bcc_map In sender_bcc_map: tester(a)ruijs.cc dovecot-archive: But that doesn't work. It looks like "dovecot-archive:" should be a real email address, not a transport (this give an idea of my Postfix knowledge ;). Then I tried: In sender_bcc_map: tester(a)ruijs.cc tester+archive(a)ruijs.cc But I don't think Dovecot's LDA supports plus addressing. So my question is, has anyone here done a similar thing in a similar setting. If so, how did you configure it. [Dovecot] Upgrade from RC7 to RC10 didn't go too well...
by Ivo Truxa 06 Nov '06

06 Nov '06

I have the same problem after upgrading to RC10. Did you find a solution? Should I update to RC11 or rather downgrade back to an earlier version? Thanks, Ivo Truxa >>>>>>> original message >>>>>>> Hi, On the weekend I tried to upgrade from RC7 to RC10. Clearly, I have to change some things before I can do this. What does it take to get to RC10? As is, my mail client got an error trying to list messages in /INBOX (via IMAP) and the mail.err log shows the following messages: Oct 29 10:27:32 siona dovecot: IMAP(archangel): open(/var/mail/archangel/inbox, O_CREAT) failed: Not a directory Oct 29 10:27:32 siona dovecot: IMAP(archangel): mkdir_parents(/var/mail/archangel/.imap/INBOX) failed: Not a directory Oct 29 10:27:32 siona dovecot: IMAP(archangel): open() failed with subscription file /var/mail/archangel/.subscriptions: Not a directory My dovecot.conf includes default_mail_env = mbox:/var/mail/%u And other then enabling SSL, I've got a pretty vanilla configuration (e.g. nothing in the IMAP section at all, no odd namespaces...) /var/mail/archangel is an mbox file, why is dovecot trying to open files under there? I know at least part of the discussion has happened on the list before so I'm sorry for duplicating other questions. My TODO is about ten km long so I hope someone can at least give me a couple good pointers. Thanks in advance! -- Dominic Lepiane The IRMACS Centre

[Dovecot] v1.0 plans, rc11 tomorrow
by Timo Sirainen 06 Nov '06

06 Nov '06

As you can probably guess from my today's burst of activity, I'm no longer extremely busy. Actually it looks like for the next 3-4 weeks I don't have anything especially time consuming to do. So it's time to get Dovecot v1.0 released :) I've now read all the mails from this list again, and it looks like pretty much the only problems with rc10 was the mbox assert crash, which is now fixed. My TODO contains: v1.0 blocker: - inetd logins are broken? I should look more into this.. I only remembered this just now while writing this mail. New non-v1.0 blockers: - trash plugin is apparently broken? - mbox_min_index_size != 0 causes Invalid new transaction log sequence (4 >= 4) The old preferrably-fixed-for-v1.0 items are: - ldap auth is leaking memory? maybe not, maybe it's something else. - master leaks log fds with kqueue. I don't have a machine to test this on. Could someone give me an account in some BSD system for a while to test this? Anyway, I'll most likely release rc11 tomorrow, but it would be nice if you tested today's CVS snapshot already to see if I accidentally broke something. :) http://dovecot.org/nightly/dovecot-latest.tar.gz Oh and one thing that I wanted for Dovecot v1.0 was nice documentation. I think the current wiki is a bit chaotic. I started http://wiki.dovecot.org/NewIndex a long time ago. Maybe I should finish it finally and put it as the new main index..

[Dovecot] Auto-expire messages in a folder
by Mike Cisar 05 Nov '06

05 Nov '06

I have a Fedora 5 server running Dovecot (currently 1.0 rc10). The spam filter (amavis) automatically tags email (using plussed addressing) such that messages flagged as spam are sorted into a "spambox" folder by procmail. Seemed like a good idea at the time, but because of some legacy issues with filesystem quota also being in place, combined with most users connecting with POP3 rather than IMAP... spam doesn't stay in their inbox, they don't check their spambox and they are very quickly over quota. What I would like to do is stick with the "spambox" folder idea, but have any messages in that folder which are older than a certain number of days deleted automatically. Could this be done by Dovecot? If so how would dovecot know to visit all the user's mailboxes to do it... or would it only be able to do so when a user logged in via IMAP (as opposed to POP3)? If not, is anyone aware of a script that I could run in nightly maintenance to do a cleanup pass on all the mailboxes? I know there are any number of ways that this could be accomplished but I would like to do it as much within my existing framework as possible... sendmail/procmail/amavis on the delivery side, dovecot in the middle, horde/imp for webmail and whatever email client the end users have (likely Outlook/Outlook Express for the most part)... all pretty generic, standard mailbox formats... nothing fancy like data stored in mySQL or anything like that. As everyone encounters, the more parts you change, the more other parts you have to fix to be compatible with the changes :-) Obviously I would like the solution to also be as feature rich as I can at the same time (might as well wish for it all right :-). Maybe for the sake of the POP3 folks it would also be nice to generate a once-daily email with the names, subjects of the messages in the folder saying "here's what is in your spam folder, please log in to webmail to manage your spam" (and in a perfect world some sort of link to click on which could move the message from the spambox back into the inbox). Does anyone have any solutions they can share that run within a similar framework to what I have set up? The thing that I need in the immediate term is to purge the spam folder automatically, the mid-term goal is to evolve that into a sort of spam-processing center/solution for the users. Thanks for any suggestions! Cheers, >>>>> Mike <<<<<

[Dovecot] ~/.maildir preferable to %h/Maildir and ~/Maildir?
by Jeff Kowalczyk 05 Nov '06

05 Nov '06

I have a recently deployed dovecot server and am readying another. Upon updating to rc12, I note the following change in the default dovecot.conf file: -default_mail_env = mbox:/var/spool/mail/%u:INDEX=/var/dovecot/%u +mail_location = maildir:~/.maildir Integrating this change to my local dovecot.conf: # formerly used default_mail_env = maildir:%h/Maildir # dovecot default mail_location = maildir:~/.maildir mail_location = maildir:~/Maildir With unix users of the form: myuser:x:505:100:My User:/home/myuser:/sbin/nologin each having ~/Maildir, should I: 1) use the ~/.maildir form over ~/Maildir. 2) use the ~ instead of %h 3) do anything for dovecot's benefit (reindex, etc.) besides a per-user 'mv ~/Maildir ~/.maildir' if 1). I came straight from an ancient sendmail mbox setup to dovecot, so I want to do things the best-pracitce IMAP/dovecot way. Thanks.

[Dovecot] Sending email using IMAP
by Marc Perkel 05 Nov '06

05 Nov '06

This is something for after the 1.0 release but I think it's important and I'm going to try to figure out how to make it happen. I'd like to see some way to pass outgoing email from Thunderbird back to dovecot through some new command that we would have to make up. Email would be sent back over the IMAP connection and when Dovecot gets it dovecot would hand it off to an SMTP server that would deliver it. If a crude experimental spec can be written I'll try to find someone on the Thunderbird side to write some sort of module to talk to it. The reason for this is that I think that the elimination of SMTP from the client is a big step to control spam. The idea being that if IMAP can transfer outgoing mail the SMTP wouldn't be necessary for clients and we can block port 25 on windows machines and viruses can't send email. And the virus wouldn't have access to the IMAP password so viruses can't authenticate to send mail. So - the key question is - what would it take to create an outgoing spec for sending email over IMAP? Like to see something clean and simple.

[Dovecot] MySQL Configuration
by Gerard Seibert 04 Nov '06

04 Nov '06

Dovecot 1.0.rc10 FreeBSD 6.1 This is probably a dumb question; however, I have never let a little thing like that bother me in the past. In the 'dovecot.conf' file there are the follow two sections: # SQL database passdb sql { # Path for SQL configuration file, see doc/dovecot-sql.conf for example args = /usr/local/etc/dovecot-sql.conf } userdb sql { # Path for SQL configuration file, see doc/dovecot-sql.conf for example args = /usr/local/etc/dovecot-sql.conf } I keep the 'users' and their respective 'passwords' in the same MySQL database. I am not sure why I wouldn't. Therefore, would it not make more sense to have just one MySQL configuration line in the 'dovecot.conf' file rather than two, or am I missing something here? -- Gerard Seibert gerard(a)seibercom.net Laws are like sausages. [Dovecot] auth-req-handler.c adds spurious tab
by Chris Laif 04 Nov '06

04 Nov '06

If the auth backend (postgresql in my case) returns extra fields, and all of these extra_fields begin with 'userdb_', the auth_callback functions adds an unwanted extra tab at the end of the response: auth(default): client out: OK^I8^Iuser=foo@bar^I This extra tab at the end confuses exim's dovecot-auth handler (the exim-dovecot auth handler does not correctly count the number of returned fields then (side note: the code on exim's side should probably be cleaned up as well)). A quick fix is attached below. Chris --- src/auth/auth-request-handler.c.orig 2006-11-03 13:10:35.000000000 +0100 +++ src/auth/auth-request-handler.c 2006-11-03 13:08:32.000000000 +0100 @@ -139,6 +139,10 @@ str_append(str, fields[src]); } } + + if (str_len(str) == 0) + return NULL; + return str_c(str); }

[Dovecot] Server-side mail archiving - possible dovecot lda feature?
by Charles Marcus 03 Nov '06

03 Nov '06

Hi Timo, I have a question on the feasibility of adding the capability directly in dovecot LDA (or maybe this wouldn't be the correct place?) to provide a server-side mail archiving feature. What I'd like is a simple way to define a maildir, ie: vmail/archive/$user/Inbox and vmail/archive/$user/Inbox.Sent And then have the dovecot LDA deliver a copy of all mail (incoming and outgoing) to this archive folder. Is the dovecot LDA the best place for this to go? Or would an entirely new plug-in be more appropriate? My boss may be willing to pay to have this capability added. I have investigated other third party solutions, but I would prefer something that is tightly integrated with dovecot. I look forward to your response... -- Best regards, Charles

by LeVA 03 Nov '06

03 Nov '06

Hi! I'm using rc10, but had this problem with previous releases too. Not sure if this is a dovecot problem, but I can not think of anything else. The mail downloading with pop3 is ~very slow, approx. 20 Kbyte / sec. no matter how many mails I've got in my mailbox, or how big are the mails. My ISP provides me a dedicated 100mbit line, and everything else works as fast as expected eg. http, ftp, scp... The OS is OpenBSD 3.9-stable and the system is not under heavy load at all. I've tried to turn off TLS but there was no change. Is the pop3 protocol this slow by design or there is something wrong with my setup? Thanks! Daniel -- LeVA

[Dovecot] CRAM-MD5 auth broken with postgresql passdb?
by Chris Laif 03 Nov '06

03 Nov '06

I'm currently experiencing a problem which has already been described by Jonathan in http://www.dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2006-August/015501.html If I use CRAM-MD5 auth with passwd-file as a backend (Thunderbird client) everything works fine (MD5-hashes have been shortened for readability): dovecot: auth(default): password(bob(a)foo.bar,10.0.0.123): Credentials: f12c884ba3cc82.. dovecot: imap-login: Login: user=<bob(a)foo.bar>, method=CRAM-MD5, rip=10.0.0.123, lip=10.0.0.234 My passwd file contains a line like this: bob@foo.bar:{HMAC-MD5}f12c884ba3cc82.. If I change to postgresql-based passdb, PLAIN auth works (!) and CRAM-MD5 does not work: dovecot: auth(default): sql(bob(a)foo.bar,10.0.0.123): query: SELECT 'bob(a)foo.bar' AS user, '{HMAC-MD5}f12c884ba3cc82..' AS password dovecot: auth(default): password(bob(a)foo.bar,10.0.0.123): Credentials: dovecot: auth(default): cram-md5(bob(a)foo.bar,10.0.0.123): password mismatch Please note the ultra-simple SELECT-statement (I've tried other combinations as well - no success). sql.conf setting is "default_pass_scheme = HMAC-MD5". Dovecot version 1.0.rc10. In the postgresql-based example the "Credentials:" variable is empty. I wonder if this is a bug in dovecot. Please let me know if you need any further information to resolve this issue. Thanks, Chris (As a side not I still do not understand how CRAM-MD5 auth is able to work without a plain text password, but that's another story. If it works with an HMAC-MD5 hash in a passwd-file backend it should work with the postgresql-db backend as well.)

[Dovecot] quota question

[Dovecot] Check plugin loading for LDA and dovecot-sieve
by Will Prater 03 Nov '06

Hello, I found this thread: http://www.dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2006- September/015955.html and have successfully compiled and installed cmusieve plugin. How does one test to make sure its being loaded? It's not parsing my sieve files in the users homes and I'd like to first check if the plugin is being loaded, since I am getting no errors about it. Thanks

[Dovecot] Postfix + Dovecot LDA Problem
by Steven F Siirila 03 Nov '06

03 Nov '06

I am having a problem setting up a server to handle e-mail in a way in which it had always done traditionally, but with Postfix+Dovecot LDA. Here's a rundown... Solaris 9 Postfix 2.3.3 Dovecot 1.0.rc10 Postfix non-defaults (postconf -n): alias_maps = dbm:/etc/mail/aliases command_directory = /opt/postfix/sbin config_directory = /etc/opt/postfix daemon_directory = /opt/postfix/libexec debug_peer_level = 2 html_directory = no inet_interfaces = $myhostname mail_owner = postfix mailbox_command = /opt/dovecot/libexec/dovecot/deliver -f "$SENDER" mailq_path = /opt/postfix/bin/mailq manpage_directory = /opt/postfix/man masquerade_domains = tc.umn.edu masquerade_exceptions = root mydestination = $myhostname mynetworks = 127.0.0.0/8, ... (omitted) myorigin = $mydomain newaliases_path = /opt/postfix/bin/newaliases queue_directory = /var/spool/postfix readme_directory = no relayhost = [omitted.tc.umn.edu] sample_directory = /etc/opt/postfix sendmail_path = /opt/postfix/sbin/sendmail setgid_group = postdrop smtpd_client_restrictions = permit_mynetworks, reject unknown_local_recipient_reject_code = 550 This works just like our old MTA, with one exception: sending e-mail to addresses within our domain (@tc.umn.edu) requires us to specify the @tc.umn.edu -- otherwise it is rejected with a message like alias(a)host.tc.umn.edu does not exist. I want such messages to be relayed to the relayhost. When I set mydestination to null, and luser_relay = $user@$domain the message goes into a black hole (I never get the message, nor do I get an NDN.) I am posting this to both the Dovecot and Postfix lists since I'm not sure where the fault lies, configuration- or software-wise. Thanks in advance for any helpful tips. -- Steven F. [Dovecot] compiling dovecot-sieve
by Fintec 02 Nov '06

02 Nov '06

Our server is an CentOS4.4 box and we use the atrpms built RPMs for installing dovecot. I am wanting to use the sieve plug-in so I've followed the dovecot wiki instructions, downloaded the files from CVS, but I'm not sure what configure options to use. When I try without any options I get: dovecot-config not found from /usr/src/dovecot-sieve, use --with-dovecot=PATH to give path to compiled Dovecot sources I tried using "./configure --with-dovecot=/usr/libexec/dovecot" but get the same problem. [Dovecot] making dovecot and exim write to one log
by Zbigniew Szalbot 02 Nov '06

02 Nov '06

Hello, I am looking for some advice. I am trying to force dovecot to run to the same log as exim does. In dovecot.conf I put the exim log path /var/log/exim/mainlog. I restarted dovecot and the process worked fine. However at midnight exim log file is rotated and since then dovecot stops logging to this log. In syslog.conf I put: mail.* /var/log/exim/mainlog And in newsyslog.conf I have: /var/log/exim/mainlog mailnull:mail 640 60 * @T00 Z I used to have an N flag next to Z but after reading the man I realized that its job is not to inform other processes about log creation. My qeustion is how do I set up things that dovecot and exim happily write to one log without having to restart dovecot at midnight? I am fairly new to FreeBSD which I use so I beg your patience with me. Thanks! -- Zbigniew Szalbot

Re: [Dovecot] deliver + quota failure
by Mark Ruijs 02 Nov '06

02 Nov '06

I investigated the deliver with quota's bug a little more (rc10, mysql, virtual domains, maildir). My log files reads: deliver(test(a)ruijs.cc): Info: msgid=<000f01c6fac1$bd4e8670$8801a8c0@Moskou>: save failed to INBOX deliver(test(a)ruijs.cc): Info: sieve runtime error: Keep: Generic Error deliver(test(a)ruijs.cc): Info: msgid=<000f01c6fac1$bd4e8670$8801a8c0@Moskou>: save failed to INBOX deliver(test(a)ruijs.cc): Error: open(ruijs.cc/test//.temp.in2sports2.vianetworks.nl.13210.72d247ac698d0019) failed: No such file or directory deliver(mark(a)ruijs.cc): Info: msgid=<dovecot-1162066721-407295-0(a)in2sports2.vianetworks.nl>: saved mail to Junk Dovecot tries to deliver, but notices quota exceeded. I don't think Sieve is playing a role here - I added Sieve before I encountered the problem. Two problems: 1) The .dovecot.lda-dupes can't be written (that's what the open...failed notice is about). 2) The Quota Exceed mail seem to contain mal-formed headers (that's why it the notice-mail ends in my junk-folder). Digging into deliver.c, I noticed that auth_client_put_user_env() changes the HOME environment from /var/mail (which is ok), to ruijs.cc/test/ (which is the maildir, relative to /var/mail). And then fopen fails (see the trace below). So I think that the code auth_socket = getenv("AUTH_SOCKET_PATH"); if (auth_socket == NULL) auth_socket = DEFAULT_AUTH_SOCKET_PATH; ret = auth_client_put_user_env(ioloop, auth_socket, destination, process_euid); if (ret != 0) return ret; home = getenv("HOME"); if (home != NULL) { /* If possible chdir to home directory so core file could be written. If it fails, don't worry. */ (void)chdir(home); is the key. Should the chdir be done *before* the call to auth_client_put_user_env()? I'm not familiar with the internal workings of the Dovecot LDA, so I won't suggest a proper fix. Who will. As for the mal-formed headers, I'll take a look at it later. [Dovecot] INBOX un-subscribable (is that a word?)
by Jim Horner 02 Nov '06

02 Nov '06

I am trying to get open-xchange installed and working (which after two days might be futile). In doing this I noticed that no email client can subscribe to INBOX. I'm using rc10 and my namespaces are the following. 99% of the email clients ignore the inability to subscribe to INBOX and display all the folders underneath anyway which is why I've never noticed this issue... however, open-xchange is not in that camp and only displays messages in INBOX. All folders are in the subscriptions file including INBOX but all email clients always list INBOX as not subscribed to. COMPANY are ROOTMAIL are share folders with ACLs in /etc/dovecot/acl and those top folders are not subscribable either. namespace public { separator = . prefix = COMPANY. location = maildir:/home/services/mail/arinbe.com/arinbe/Maildir:CONTROL=%h/shared-set… hidden = no inbox = no } namespace public { separator = . prefix = ROOTMAIL. location = maildir:/home/services/mail/arinbe.com/rootmail/Maildir:CONTROL=%h/shared-s… hidden = no inbox = no } # default namespace namespace private { separator = . inbox = yes hidden = no prefix = INBOX. }

[Dovecot] FC4 and Dovecot 1.0 not displaying all migrated mailboxes
by Lovell Mcilwain 02 Nov '06

02 Nov '06

Hello all, I recently switched to dovecot on my FC4 server from UW-IMAP on my Mac OS X 10.3 machine and I was able to get my inbox and my trash box to be seen without any issues but all of my other mailboxes don't seem to show up. My mail directory is ~/mail and that is where I placed all of my mailboxes that I moved from my mac, but when I log into my new server using SSL/IMAP, only my trash and my inbox show up. My other mailboxes don't show up at all. Can anyone tell me how I can get my other mailboxes to show? As far as I know these mailboxes are standard unix mailbox files. Thanks

[Dovecot] BUG in RC10 deliver using mbox format
by Steven F Siirila 02 Nov '06

02 Nov '06

After recently adding the -f parameter to the call to the deliver command which is called by Postfix, I found that e-mail with a null return path (MAIL FROM:<>) was causing Dovecot deliver to SEGFAULT. I verified this by making this patch to deliver.c (notice I fixed a typo here, too): *** deliver.c.orig Fri Oct 13 07:32:28 2006 --- deliver.c Fri Oct 27 21:26:08 2006 *************** *** 446,454 **** i++; if (i == argc) { i_fatal_status(EX_USAGE, ! "Missing envleope argument"); } ! envelope_sender = argv[i]; } else { print_help(); i_fatal_status(EX_USAGE, --- 446,455 ---- i++; if (i == argc) { i_fatal_status(EX_USAGE, ! "Missing envelope argument"); } ! if (*argv[i]) ! envelope_sender = argv[i]; } else { print_help(); i_fatal_status(EX_USAGE, While this fixed my SEGFAULT, it still leaves the "From_" line with the default "dovecot.deliver" as the return path, something I don't want. It should be "MAILER-DAEMON" or some-such just like all the other LDAs in the case of a NULL return path. Perhaps there needs to be a new parameter so one can specify what a NULL return path should be converted to when it is encountered... Also, note that the "Usage" message in deliver.c does not include the relatively new -f option either, so that should have been part of my above patch as well. -- Steven F. [Dovecot] quota with sendmail and dovecot
by Antonio Casado Rodríguez 02 Nov '06

02 Nov '06

I have a problem with dovecot and quotas I don't want quota in INBOX with sendmail (mbox), it's work ok. Sendmail can put the new messages in INBOX although exceed the quota limit. I have two namespace in dovecot: namespace private { separator = / inbox = yes prefix = "#mbox/" location = mbox:/Public/Maildir/%n_mbox_indexes:INBOX=/var/mail/%n } namespace private { separator = / prefix = "" location = maildir:/Public/Maildir/%n } I have this quota: plugin { quota = maildir:storage=10240 } It's work ok, i have 10 MB in INBOX and i have 10 MB in maildir. My clients are Mozilla Thunderbird My problem: when Sendmail put one new message in INBOX, Thunderbird see it, but the quota don't change. I think that when dovecot do a full sync it must update the quota.

[Dovecot] mbox_sync_read_and_move failure
by Timothy Daly 02 Nov '06

02 Nov '06

Hi, I recently switched to using dovecot for my IMAP server. I'm running dovecot 1.0rc10 on redhat linux 7.3. The filesystem is ext2, not NFS. I'm using mbox for mail storage. It worked okay for a day or two, but now when I try to check my mail I get an error from evolution, my imap client, saying that the server unexpectedly disconnected. In the server logs I see: Nov 2 13:10:49 tenkan dovecot: imap-login: Login: user=<tim>, method=PLAIN, rip=192.132.92.15, lip=216.114.78.229, TLS Nov 2 13:10:58 tenkan dovecot: IMAP(tim): file mbox-sync-rewrite.c: line 405 (mbox_sync_read_and_move): assertion failed: (need_space == (uoff_t)-mails[idx].space) Nov 2 13:10:58 tenkan dovecot: child 30315 (imap) killed with signal 6 I see that this came up on this list a little while ago, but it doesn't sound like it got resolved. For the moment, I'm unable to read my mail via IMAP. :/ Any ideas? [Dovecot] Dovecot-auth stand alone
by Jorgen Lundman 02 Nov '06

02 Nov '06

Since you have to have a SASL implementation with Postfix, either Cyrus or Dovecot, would it be feasable to have autoconf options to build only those parts required? Currently I attempt to disable most things, except for LDAP which we want to use: ./configure --with-ldap --without-pop3d --without-passwd --without-passwd-file --without-shadow --without-pam --without-checkpassword --without-bsdauth --without-vpopmail --without-ssl --without-deliver --without-sql-drivers --with-storages= That still compiles, and installs, imap. No way to stop that. However, master process "dovecot" does not want to start with "protocols=" set to empty. This is somewhat understandable, but I really do not want any listening ports, just the Unix auth socket and dovecot-auth process. Bind localhost for now? I take it I should run dovecot-auth as stand-alone, setting the AUTH_1 environment variable as well as a few others. [Dovecot] 1.0.rc10 status report
by David Lee 02 Nov '06

02 Nov '06

(Background: Relatively new to dovecot; looking to do transparent replacement of long-established UW-IMAP on cluster of Linux boxes which NFS-mount a shared "/var/spool/mail".) With rc8, where I had already increased "login_max_processes_count" from default 128 to 1024, we had still hit the issue of too many logins crashing dovecot, so that trial had only lasted a couple of hours. With rc10, I doubled this to try to avoid the problem (I didn't want to risk testing the new code that addressed the problem... sorry!). We ran for almost a full working day. Good! Because of a few issues (below) I then backed off. 1. "User unknown": We use NIS for our passwd information. On the earlier rc8 test we had had several occurences of "User unknown" (from "deliver") giving "dsn=5..." for perfectly valid users. So for this rc10 test I applied a local patch so these were reduced to "EX_TEMPFAIL" (dsn=4...). (This was triggered, as epected, a few times and subsequent delivery attemtps succeeded.) I strongly suspect that this is some sort of issue with FC5, probably "nscd" and nothing to do with dovecot. Hints would be nice, but from the dovecot perspective you may probably ignore this item. 2. For one particular user, the "deliver" consistently gave: Failed to create storage for '...' with mail 'mbox:/HOME_DIRECTORY_USED_BUT_NOT_GIVEN_BY_USERDB:INBOX=... I think this is ultimately due to something strange in the user ".forward" file. I'd be delighted to follow this up with anyone else who might have seen it. Although in one sense we may be drifting off-topic, in another sense I suspect that there is scope for adjusting "deliver" to handle this more gracefully. 3. There were several occurences of: IMAP(...): file ../../../../../src/lib-storage/index/mbox/mbox-sync-rewrite.c: line 405 (mbox_sync_read_and_move): assertion failed: (need_space == (uoff_t)-mails[idx].space) child 30842 (imap) killed with signal 6 This looks particularly awkward. Any thoughts? 4. There were two occurences of: IMAP(...): file ../../../src/lib-index/mail-index.c: line 1801 (mail_index_move_to_memory): assertion failed: (index->fd == -1) child 20493 (imap) killed with signal 6 Again, this looks particularly awkward. Any thoughts? For these last two items, note that the indexes are currently NFS-shared alongside the INBOX area. I'm still not clear on how to regard the concept of indexes, as applied to a small cluster of machines, and handling simultaneous updates to INBOXes (analogous to the vital importance of INBOX locking for such updates). If one imagines the IMAP daemon (and pop and deliver) as file-clients of the (NFS-shared) INBOXes on a fileserver, do the indexes belong very close to the INBOXes (fileserver) or the dovecot software (file client)? So should I have the indexes on the fileserver (one instance), or should they be on each cluster machine's private storage (possibly several instances; one per cluster machine)? I've got them on the server; would they be better on the cluster clients? (Might that be the cause and fix of these two problems?) -- : David Lee I.T. [Dovecot] valid_chroot_dirs question
by Luca Corti 02 Nov '06

02 Nov '06

Hello, I've got a dovecot setup using PAM and real system users. In this setup I also use pure-ftpd to give local users ftp access to their $HOMEs. To have pure-ftpd chroot into the user home i replaced /home/user with /home/user/./ in /etc/passwd. Unfortunately this breaks Dovecot this way: Oct 23 18:18:20 localhost dovecot: Invalid chroot directory '/home/foo' (user foo) (see valid_chroot_dirs in config file) and dovecot.conf says # ':' separated list of directories under which chrooting is allowed for mail # processes (ie. /var/mail will allow chrooting to /var/mail/foo/bar too). # This setting doesn't affect login_chroot or auth_chroot variables. # WARNING: Never add directories here which local users can modify, that # may lead to root exploit. Usually this should be done only if you don't # allow shell access for users. See doc/configuration.txt for more information. #valid_chroot_dirs = Now if I set valid_chroot_dirs = /home everything works, but the WARNING pretty much scares me since user foo HAS shell access. Is this safe? Is there a way to avoid this? Why I can't chroot to /home/foo/./ if I can to /home/foo ? I'm on 1.0rc10 thanks

[Dovecot] Installation of Dovecot
by Steven F Siirila 02 Nov '06

02 Nov '06

When I configure Dovecot to conform to our directory hierarchy, it insists on adding 'dovecot/' to the prefixes I specify. Is there any way to inhibit this? My configure command is: ./configure --prefix=/opt/dovecot --sysconfdir=/etc/opt/dovecot \ --libexecdir=/opt/dovecot/libexec --localstatedir=/var/opt/dovecot \ --without-sql-drivers --with-ssl=openssl \ --with-ssldir=/etc/opt/dovecot My problem is with the resulting directories: /opt/dovecot/libexec/dovecot is used instead of /opt/dovecot/libexec /var/opt/dovecot/lib/dovecot is used instead of /var/opt/dovecot/lib /var/opt/dovecot/run/dovecot is used instead of /var/opt/dovecot/run It seems that Dovecot assumes that libexecdir and localstatedir refer to non-Dovecot-specific directories, and adds 'dovecot/' to the path. Is there any way to avoid this? [Dovecot] imap process crashing with "file mail-cache-fields.c: line 26: unreached"
by JB Zimmerman 02 Nov '06

02 Nov '06

Hoping someone's seen this and/or can help...heh. I'm running the at rpm of dovecot, version dovecot-1.0-0_27.rc10.el4.at. I'm running it on RHEL4, up to date. We're using Maildir (we're upgraded from a Courier-IMAP installation) and things are working...but...we have a few users with very large mailboxes (not their inboxes) where they archive stuff (200k+ messages). When they try to read those mailboxes, the imap server instantly drops the connection, and I get the following in the log: --cut-- Oct 27 11:20:11 hostname dovecot: IMAP(user): file mail-cache-fields.c: line 26: unreached Oct 27 11:20:11 hostname dovecot: child 27514 (imap) killed with signal 6 --cut-- host and user names changed to protect the guilty. I have tried increasing the imap process size max to 512, as well as doubling the IMAP command size to 131072 (bytes)? Neither made a difference. *other* mailboxes on the same account work fine. The error happens *immediately*, not after a timeout, as soon as they select the mailbox in their client (we're using Evolution, and have tried pine as well...I'm working on trying other clients). The Maildir caching optimization settings in the conf are left to default. Any ideas? Many thanks. J.B. Zimmerman --

The reply will then take the highest > priority in the queue. Is your primary goal with this replication to add redundancy or to distribute load such as for shared mailboxes? I've thought about the redundancy side of this a lot, but not so much about load distribution. It sounds like you're going for load distribution, but... If the goal is redundancy, I'd suggest that mailbox state is less important than the mail data. Index files can be recreated from the data, and would not even be needed on the secondary server(s) unless the primary fails. So I'd put a higher priority on getting the mail content to the secondary servers. If the goal is to distribute load for shared mailboxes, then your prioritization makes sense. Also, if the goal is redundancy, this design can be simplified a lot by having one master and one or more slaves. All modify operations would go to the master, so that you do not need global locks. Different sets of users would belong to different namespaces, so that you can have multiple replication paths in your cluster. You'd also want an API for the replication process so that third-party applications that modify mailboxes can log those changes so that they are replicated. And in that case, the replication process could be made generic enough so that it can be used to replicate any set of files, with or without Dovecot. Bill

[Dovecot] CRASH: mail-cache-fields.c crash - new info, hacked 'solution'
by JB Zimmerman 01 Nov '06

01 Nov '06

I'm baaaaack. :-) I've managed to implement a suggestion from Hans Morten Kind from this list that seems to have stopped the crashing. However, my hack - commenting out a call to i_unreached() - makes me queasy because I have no idea of the ramifications of it (I don't habitually code, myself). So I wanted to lay it out for y'all in case this is a problem that you feel should be looked at. So, here's my situation. Using dovecot-1.0.rc10 downloaded from dovecot.org. Built an RPM locally on my machine (as opposed to prior attempts, which used the AT rpms), which is running RHEL 4AS with all updates. Did *not* configure in postgres, mysql, sqlite, ldap-auth. Other than that, stock (openssl included, eg) - some file locations taken from AT RPMs' spec (redhat specific file locs). No patches performed. SPEC available if y'all think it'd help; the RPM built with no complaints, installed same. Using Maildir format, upgraded from a Courier install, so .folder.subfolder structure. Error behavior: When a user attempted to open a folder containing large numbers of messages (roughly 100k+ messages, as far as we can tell) they immediately got an error saying the server has disconnected. On the server side, I got this in the log (hostname 'magneto' obviously) ---cut--- Nov 1 15:18:16 magneto dovecot: IMAP(joeuser): file mail-cache-fields.c: line 26: unreached Nov 1 15:18:16 magneto dovecot: child 17599 (imap) killed with signal 6 ---cut--- Now, the folder in question is a folder of CVS commit messages (hence the size). If I go into the folder ("/home/joeuser/Maildir/.GNOME CVS commits/") and do 'rm -f dovecot-*' and then have the user try again, then they can open the folder and get a message list. dovecot will rebuild the various index files. However, as soon as they click on an individual message, bam, the same error behavior - and from then on, they can't get into the folder again unless we remove their dovecot files again. We tried this using Evolution, mutt and pine as the clients. All exhibited identical behavior. This is coming over TLS. NOW THE FIX: I made a change to the source (gasp!) that honestly I have no idea the ramifications of, but it has...well, not *fixed*, but sorta fixed it. As per Hans Morten Kind, I commented out the i_unreached() call in field_has_fixed_size(). After this, the mail is readable as is the folder list, but now there is an error message in the log. First things first, here's the change I made to dovecot-1.0.rc10/src/lib-index/mail-cache-fields.c: ---cut--- @@ -23,7 +23,7 @@ return FALSE; } - i_unreached(); +/* i_unreached(); */ return FALSE; } ---cut--- ...and here's what now happens in the log, to the same mail folder as above: ---cut--- Nov 1 15:59:42 magneto dovecot: IMAP(joeuser): Corrupted index cache file /home/joeuser/Maildir/.GNOME CVS commits/dovecot.index.cache: field header names corrupted ---cut--- At that point, I deleted the cache files again, and the error goes away. I also notice that the index.cache file in that folder is much, much larger than it was, from which I posit that the above error was because the crashing imap process had left an incomplete index file. Removing it thus forced a rebuild with the new code which seems to have fixed the problem. Thank you all for your patience. I hand this willingly over to the list. jb -- ------------------------------------ J.B. [Dovecot] Real and Virtual Users + Domains

I have seen a few suggestions on how to address the issue of a system employing both real and virtual users and domains. Is there any definitive solution as to how this should be accomplished? [Dovecot] Upgrade from RC7 to RC10 didn't go too well...
by Dominic Lepiane 01 Nov '06

01 Nov '06

Hi, On the weekend I tried to upgrade from RC7 to RC10.

[Dovecot] moving public folders to private Trash
by Mark Nienberg 01 Nov '06

01 Nov '06

Using Thunderbird 1.5.0.4 against dovecot beta9: If a user has Thunderbird configured to move deleted messages into a Trash folder, then the user cannot delete folders in a public namespace. There is no problem deleting messages. Thunderbird says: "The current command did not succeed. The mail server responded: Can't rename mailbox to another storage type." All mailboxes (public and private) are maildir format. Users can successfully delete folders from their own private areas, and the folders then appear as subfolders of the Trash folder. Also, users can reconfigure Thunderbird to delete messages immediately instead of moving them to trash and then successfully remove public folders. Also, users can move public folders within the public namespace. So I think the problem boils down to the inability to move a folder from a public namespace to a private one, which is what happens when Thunderbird is configured to move deleted messages to a Trash folder. [Dovecot] IMAP Dovecot with ISPConfig and shared folders?
by Perry 31 Oct '06

Fedora 5, postfix, dovecot, ISPConfig server all running well, (don't want to break it) LOL. But, I do not have IMAP shared folders. These instructions on dovecot tell of how to setup namespace to be able to get shared folders. http://wiki.dovecot.org/SharedFolders But given everything is relative in ISPConfig, not sure if this is possible or if I could really mess things up. What tells dovecot to look in the various different web# folders for email? Am I better off using Symlinking??? [Dovecot] Continuing problems with zombied dovecot-auth procs; mail-cache-fields.c IMAP procs crashing
by JB Zimmerman 31 Oct '06

31 Oct '06

Folks- Hans Morten Kind was kind enough to confirm the issue I'm having with large mailboxes and the mail-cache-fields.c file (line 26: unreached error in logs when the imap process crashes out on large Maildirs). Has anyone implemented a fix for this that is both tested and applicable without making manual code changes myself, since I don't trust myself slashing about in source files? Ideally, has this problem been noted for fixing in a newer version? Failing that, if I downgrade to the 0.99 version shipped with RHEL4, has anyone found that to be more reliable? I used the 1.0rc10 in order to gain access to the 'namespace' conf directives so that upgrading from our current Courier Maildir installations would be as seamless as possible, but at the moment, I'm looking at having to roll back to Courier in order to fix this (and the next) problem. Also, we have found that using 1.0rc10 on RHEL4, using pam-ldap for account info and pam-krb for auth, has resulted in the eventual inaccessability of mail due to many zombied and unresponsive dovecot-auth processes. Restarting dovecot the first few times it becomes unresponsive will fix the problem, presumably by instantiating new auth procs, but eventually this no longer works since the restart doesn't actually kill off the zombied auth procs and the socket stops responding. Has anyone run into this problem? Thanks, J.B. Zimmerman RHEL4AS, fully updated, using the AT rpms: dovecot-1.0-0_27.rc10.el4.at --

[Dovecot] Multiple certificates
by Phill Edwards 31 Oct '06

31 Oct '06

I have dovecot version 1.0 relese 0.beta8.2.fc5 installed on my FC5 linux box. It acts as an IMAP server to my home LAN. I connect to it from the home PCs over SSL and have installed a certificate in the domain imap.edwards.home to enable this. However, I also use a web site called www.xs2mail.com which retrieves the email from my IMAP server (which has a public DNS entry called XXX.homelinux.com) and displays them in a web interface. I used to run uw-imap and this all worked fine. But since I went to Dovecot I can't use that site any more because it gives me this message: Login failure: Certificate failure for XXX.homelinux.com: self signed certificate: /C=AU/ST=NSW/L=Sydney/O=Edwards/OU=IMAP server/CN=imap.edwards.home/emailAddress=philledwards(a)gmail.com I assume it's getting upset because the certificate is for imap.edwards.home but the domain it's connecting to is XXX.homelinux.com. Is there a way to resolve this? I read something about using virtual servers but all I could find is this in a post somewhere - I don't know which file it goes, where in that file etc: <snip> 1.0-tests support "virtual servers", where this is possible: server foo { listen = 1.2.3.4 ssl_cert_file = /etc/ssl/certs/foo.cer } server bar { listen = 1.2.3.5 ssl_cert_file = /etc/ssl/certs/bar.cer } </snip> Can anyone help me figure this out? (PS - I can't just set up my own IMAP web interface because I can't run anything on port 80 with my ISP and I can't get out of our company firewall on anything other than port 80). Thanks in advance, Phill

I don't want to disable these mechanisms in auth {} stanza of dovecot.conf, because they are Ok over SSL/TLS. It works for dovecot-pop3 and dovecot-imap, but not for postfix :( postfix 2.3.3, dovecot 1.0rc10. -- Best regards, Lev mailto:lev@serebryakov.spb.ru

[Dovecot] LSUB and namespaces - how to get rid of multible prefixes
by Henrik Ostergaard Madsen 28 Oct '06

28 Oct '06

I'm using dovecot 1.0.rc7 and Squirrelmain 1.4.8 using IMAP on a Debian 3.1 Testing system, and I'm having a problem. When Squirrelmail (or other IMAP clients) submits an LSUB "" "*%", dovecot responds with: Request: A004 LSUB "" "*%" Response: * LSUB () "/" "INBOX.Sent" * LSUB () "/" "INBOX.Trash" * LSUB () "/" "INBOX.Drafts" * LSUB () "/" "mail/Sent" * LSUB () "/" "mail/Trash" * LSUB () "/" "mail/Drafts" * LSUB () "/" ".mail/Sent" * LSUB () "/" ".mail/Trash" * LSUB () "/" ".mail/Drafts" * LSUB () "/" "Sent" * LSUB () "/" "Trash" * LSUB () "/" "Drafts" * LSUB () "/" "INBOXSent" * LSUB () "/" "INBOXTrash" * LSUB () "/" "INBOXDrafts" * LSUB () "/" "./INBOX.Sent" * LSUB () "/" "./INBOX.Trash" * LSUB () "/" "./INBOX.Drafts" * LSUB () "/" "Test" Lsub completed. This is in spite of that only INBOX.Sent, INBOX.Trash, INBOX.Drafts and Test actually exists. I have tried with no explicit namespaces, only one with no prefix or with prefix "/", and with that again and all the above prefixes marked as hidden, but with absolutely no change in the LSUB repons. Due to this, Squirrelmail shows up a whole bunch of folders, but only the correct ones (without prefixes) works.. This has been the same with a few prior versions of dovecot 1.0 , but not with dovecot 0.99. It is the same for Squirrelmail 1.4.7, but I do not think the client matters.. Is there a setting or way to deal with this - or is it a bug? Regards, Henrik

[Dovecot] "dovecot dead but subsys locked" problem
by Carla Tironi Farinati 27 Oct '06

27 Oct '06

Hi, Following the advice of someone really helpfull here, I just installed Postfix/Dovecot (from rpms). I'm running CentOs 4.4. I followed this guide: http://www.howtoforge.com/linux_postfix_virtual_hosting I've got two problems, a)my server is now listed as RCB, whatever that means, I suppose that's close to spamming. "0: Connection refused. Your IP address is blocked(Spamhaus XBL) - see http://www.spamhaus.org/query/bl?ip=216.32.68.90 " b)[root@server ssl]# /etc/init.d/dovecot restart Stopping Dovecot Imap: [FAILED] Starting Dovecot Imap: [ OK ] [root@server ssl]# /etc/init.d/dovecot status dovecot dead but subsys locked I deleted the sybsys file and tried to restart it. It crashes and show the error agsin. The logs don't show up anything unusual. I also see in the logs: Oct 25 22:50:07 server postfix/virtual[24712]: 48BA5904990: to=<carlatf(a)ithaki.net>, relay=virtual, delay=1, status=deferred (mailbox /var/spool/vmail/ithaki.net/carlatf: cannot open file: Is a directory) Of course it's a directory!. I created it following the guide! I reinstalled Dovecot with the latest sources and nothing. I also turn off SSL from dovecot's config file, nothing. Any ideas dovecot gurus!? Best regards, Carla

[Dovecot] Clustering (replication and proxying) plans for the future
by Timo Sirainen 27 Oct '06

27 Oct '06

I wrote this mostly so that I won't forget my thoughts. Most likely won't be implemented anytime soon. I haven't thought through all the locking issues. It would require a distributed lock manager in any case. I think there are already several existing ones, so one of them could probably be used for Dovecot. Each mail server would consult a master server for getting namespace configuration and location for shared/public mailboxes. If the data is stored in some central SQL server there could just as well be multiple master servers (or even each server be their own master). Whenever trying to open a shared mailbox that doesn't exist in the current server, the imap process would automatically create a new connection for the destination server and start proxying the data. The proxy would be a somewhat dummy proxy, which just forwards the client's commands to it and doesn't even try to understand the replies from the remote server. So admin will have to be careful to use only servers which have all the capabilities that were announced by the original server. So, then the replication. Each namespace could be configured to be available either by proxying or by replication: namespace public { prefix = example/ location = proxy:imap.example.com } namespace public { prefix = example/ replicated_to = host1.example.com host2.example.com # If multi-master, we'll need to use global locking. If not, the # replicated_to servers contain only slaves. multi_master = yes location = maildir:~/Maildir } The way this would work is that each imap process connects via UNIX socket to a replication process, which gets input from all the imap processes. The replication process keeps track of how much has been sent to each other server and also the acks it has received from them. So if the network dies temporarily it'll start writing the changes to the disk until it reaches some limit, after which a complete resync will be necessary. Dovecot already writes all the changes to a mailbox first to a transaction log file and and only afterwards it updates the actual mailbox. The contents of the new mails aren't stored there though. The replication could work simply by sending the transaction logs' contents to the replicatio process which passes it onto other servers, which finally sync their local mailboxes based on that data. Since Dovecot already is able to sync mailboxes based on the transaction log's contents this should be pretty easy to implement. Of course the new mails' contents also have to be sent. This could be prioritized lower than the transaction traffic, so that each server always has very up-to-date view of the mailbox metadata, but not necessarily the contents of all the mails. If the server finds itself in a situation that it doesn't have some specific mail, it'll send a request to the replication process to fetch it ASAP from another server. The reply will then take the highest priority in the queue. Normally when opening or reading the mailbox there's really no need to do any global locking. The server will show the mailbox's state to be what it has last received from the replication process. Whenever modifying the mailbox a global lock is required. Here's also the problem that if the network is down between two servers, they both think that they got the global lock. If they did any conflicting changes, they'll have to be resolved when both of them again see each others. Dovecot's transactions in general aren't order-dependent so most of the conflicts can be resolved by just having the replication master decide which way the transactions were done and then sending the transactions back to all of the servers in that order. Adding new messages is a problem however. UIDs must be always growing and they must be unique. I think Cyrus solved this by having 64bit global UIDs which really uniquely identify the messages (ie. first 32bits contain server-specific UID), and then the 32bit IMAP UIDs. If there are any conflicts with the IMAP UIDs, they're given new UIDs (which invalidates clients' cache for those messages, but that can't be helped). Resyncing works basically by requesting a list of all the mailboxes, opening each one of them and requesting new transactions from the log files with <UID validity>, <log file sequence>, <log file offset> triplet. If UID validity has changed or log file no longer exists, a full resync needs to be done. Also if the log file contains a lot of changes, it's probably faster to do a full resync. Full resync would then be just sending the whole dovecot.index file. Conflict resolving could also require a full resync if transaction logs were lost. That'd work again by the master receiving everyone's dovecot.index files, deciding what to do with them and sending the modified version back to everyone. Each server has different transaction logs, so the log file sequences can't be directly used between servers. So the replication process probably will have to keep track of every server's log seq/offset. Also when receiving full dovecot.index files they'll have to be updated in some way. Then there's the problem of how to implement the receiving side. If the user already has a process connected to the replication process it could be instructed to update the mailboxes. But since this doesn't happen all that often, there also needs to be some replication-writer process which writes all the received transactions to the mailboxes. Now, when exactly should these replication-writer processes be created then? If all users have the same UNIX user ID, then there could be a spool of processes always running and doing the writing. Although this worries me a bit since the same process is handling different users' data. More secure way, and the only way if users have different UNIX UIDs, is to launch a separate writer process for each user. It probably isn't a great idea to do that immediately when receiving data for a user, but to queue data for the user for a while and then once enough has been received or some timeout has occurred, the writer process would be executed. There probably should be some shared in-memory cache with a memory limit of some megabytes, after which data is written to disk up to a configurable amount. Only after that is full or timeout for the user is reached, the writer process is executed and the data is sent to it. All this replication stuff could also be used to implement a remote mail storage (ie. smarter proxying). The received indexes/transactions could simply be kept in memory, and all the mails that aren't already cached in memory could just be requested from the master whenever needed. I'm not sure if there's much point in doing this over dummy proxying though.

[Dovecot] dovecot.org not resolving!
by /dev/rob0 27 Oct '06

I had to bypass my unknown sender/recipient domain restrictions to receive list mail and send this. It's hard to say without a whois server for .fi, but it appears that the problem might be with the procontrol.fi. domain. Action to fix the problem is needed ASAP! I've emailed Timo offlist; also tried to get him in IRC. -- Offlist mail to this address is discarded unless "/dev/rob0" or "not-spam" is in Subject: header

[Dovecot] SpamAssassin training plugin
by Chad Parry 26 Oct '06

26 Oct '06

I found a plugin for dSPAM on this mailing list (http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.mail.imap.dovecot/4632/focus=4632) that was very useful to me. I just modified the code to work for SpamAssassin instead. The purpose of this plugin is to watch the mail that is in the user's spam folder. If the user manually moves a piece of mail into the spam folder then the mail must have been spam that was incorrectly classified. This plugin causes SpamAssassin to relearn that mail as spam. Anyone else who finds this functionality useful is welcome to follow the link below. . http://chad.parry.org/software/dovecot/ - Chad Parry

[Dovecot] mail_extra_groups and home directory permissions
by Joe Cooper 26 Oct '06

26 Oct '06

Hi all, I've got a virtual hosting environment, where each user lives in /home/domain/homes/user, and the mailbox is Maildir within that directory. I've been running into a permissions problem, because it seems Dovecot doesn't get the users group membership (which seems odd, but I'm not confident enough of my comprehension of Dovecot to call say it looks like a bug). In short, when Dovecot hits the /home/domain directory which is owned by domain:domain and set to 750 permissions, it gets a permission denied, despite the user having the needed group membership to traverse these directories. So, in an effort to work around this problem, I came upon the mail_extra_groups option, which seems to allow me to drop dovecot into additional groups. If I add the domain group to this list, dovecot is able to traverse to the correct directory and all works exactly as I want it to with the domain directories being set to 750 permissions. Hooray! My only question, since this is not the documented purpose of this option, is: Is it safe to do this? Am I opening up some other kind of security problem by setting this option to include all domain groups? Thanks for any thoughts anyone might have on this...

[Dovecot] "Real" users AND Virtual users
by Muhamad A. Martoprawiro 25 Oct '06

25 Oct '06

Dear all, How can I use dovecot for both "real" users and virtual users? I could configure dovecot for real users, by using these lines in /etc/dovecot.conf: default_mail_env = maildir:%h/Maildir auth default { passdb pam { } userdb passwd { } } To accept virtual users, I used these lines: default_mail_env = maildir:/usr/local/virtual/%u/ auth default { passdb sql { args = /etc/dovecot-mysql.conf } userdb sql { args = /etc/dovecot-mysql.conf } } But, again, how to accept both kind of users? I use Postfix as mail server, and use LDAP/PAM for real users that have home-directory on the system. My OS is Mandriva 2007, and I use dovecot that is bundled as an RPM package (dovecot 1.9 rc7) in the OS. The content of file /etc/pam.d/dovecot: #%PAM-1.0 auth required pam_stack.so service=system-auth account required pam_stack.so service=system-auth Thanks. Regards, Muhamad

Hi, i have 2 dovecot imap server running on solaris 10 The primary server with dovecot 1.0.alpha4 is running with best performance on Sun Sparc E4k5 with 8x 450MHz The secondary with rc10 has ugly performanceproblems on Sun E450 wth 4x 450MHz. Every new imap process takes permanent 25% cpu usage List the folder and fetch message are both slowy! Both servers are configred with ldap backend preventive i deleted for rc10 the complet index and controlfiles, because the spooldir is a sync from the masterserver with dovecot alpha4. I thought its a little bit slowy because of my 30.000 mails. the indexfiles are created now, but the still ugly slow .... For debugging i compiled rc10 again --with-debug=yes and start dovecot with solaris truss truss tells nothing to explain this behavor logentrys from dovecot has this warnings: --> dovecot: Oct 18 14:51:47 Warning: IMAP(saar): Growing pool 'storage' with: 1024 dovecot: Oct 18 14:51:47 Info: IMAP(saar): dirsize quota limit = 750000kB dovecot: Oct 18 14:51:47 Warning: IMAP(saar): Growing data stack with: 32768 dovecot: Oct 18 14:51:47 Warning: IMAP(saar): Growing data stack with: 65536 dovecot: Oct 18 14:51:48 Warning: IMAP(saar): Growing data stack with: 131072 dovecot: Oct 18 14:51:48 Warning: IMAP(saar): Growing pool 'uidlist record_pool' with: 32768 <-- also i compiled rc10 --with-notify=none, no result to ensure it isn´t the solaris system, i compiled alpha4. [Dovecot] Unsolved : mbox-sync-rewrite.c : assertion failed
by Jakob Curdes 25 Oct '06

25 Oct '06

Some days ago I wrote about an inaccessible mailbox after an upgrade from 0.99.14 to 1.0rc10. Today I get this problem with another mailbox but it seems to be it is not only related to the upgrade : - user comes back from holiday, does not see his inbox : dovecot: Oct 24 18:51:09 Error: IMAP(abcd): file mbox-sync-rewrite.c: line 405 (mbox_sync_read_and_move): assertion failed: (need_space == (uoff_t)-mails[idx].space) (he accessed it last with the old dc version) Solution : moving account to other server, copy everything over to the old account and it worked. This is what I did and afterwards the mailbox was readable. Now the user goes back to his PC (I made my work from another machine) and opens his mailclient (with the still existing account) and BINGO dovecot crashes again on the mailbox as berfore. Once ist has crashed on it, it than crashes always, even if you make a new account or remove the index. So I suppose it has rather to do with cached information in the client than with the upgrade itself. But nothing the client sends should be able to crash the server ! Hoping for an idea, Jakob Curdes

[Dovecot] Status of Shared Folders?
by Charles Marcus 24 Oct '06

24 Oct '06

Hi Timo, I'm just curious... is the Wiki up to date regarding the status of Shared Folder support for Dovecot? Specifically, does Dovecot still have a problem with Read-only (for certain users) maildirs using Shared folders defined via namespaces? I'm about ready to start testing a rollout, but wanted to find out what to expect with regard to Shared Folders - we use them extensively right now (Courier-imap), so it is important for us. Having per-user read/unread flags will be a very nice bonus, but I don't see anything about support for those... -- Best regards, Charles Marcus I.T. [Dovecot] converting from courier questions
by Aaron P. Martinez 24 Oct '06

24 Oct '06

I currently run postfix and courier on my mail servers with squirrelmail. The problem with courier is it seems to run so slow. The webmail takes forever to load if you have many mails. I have this set up in virtual domains with all longin and path info in an mysql database. I just joined the list and DID google before asking, hope this isn't a common question. With courier it looks for a "homedir" and then a "maildir".. I tried doing a query as such: user_query = SELECT Homedir and Maildir AS home, VUID AS uid , VGID AS gid FROM users WHERE Email_address = '%u' to no avail, is my sql wrong or can you not cat the homedir and maildir fields together to create the complete path to home? . i got around the homedir problem by setting mail_chroot = /var/spool/postfix/virtuals (is this the general way, only way?) and then in my dovecot-mysql.conf i have user_query = SELECT Maildir AS home, VUID AS uid , VGID AS gid FROM users WHERE Email_address = '%u' This almost worked but as i was watching the logs it was looking for /var/spool/postfix/virtuals/<somedomainname>/Maildir//Maildir In courier the "Maildir" is not implied, it has to be spicified in the database. I have a LOT of users and would love to avoid chaning every line in my database. or add another filed just for dovecot. I would also like the ability to switch back and forth for testing with courier.. Is there anyway that this can be done? Thanks in advance, Aaron

[Dovecot] Proxy using passd file

I'm trying to create a proxy using passwd files. Can I use the existing passwd files created by the system (ie passwd and shadow) or do I have to create new passwd files for the email proxy users? How would the passwd and shadow files for a proxy using passwd files look? I've tried the example on the wiki but I'm not getting anywhere, pop and imap requests are not getting sent to the other server.

The problem appears only when the ldap connection breaks (e.g. remote ldap server restart). We don't use rootbinddn at all. Anyway I just checked the latest version of nss_ldap and now I see interesting new relevant options are available (e.g. nss_connect_policy persist/oneshot). I will give it a try and respond back in a few days. Definately nss_ldap's bad behaviour is not really a dovecot problem. Dovecot has been rock solid here serving 30000 users (4000 different active users every day) on a single server. apap

I was using dovecot ->getpwent -> nscd -> nss_ldap -> LDAP. I found out that whenever the ldap server got restarted, nscd did not restart properly and immediately its permanent ldap connection, and was giving 'user unknown' replies at least for a few minutes. Restarting nscd would fix the problem immediately. Running without nscd would also fix the problem. There was no problem with pam_ldap authentication. As a result, the system got ignorant of its uncached users for a few moments. My workaround was a crontab that kept /etc/passwd up-to-date as well as an entry in the /etc/resolv.conf 'passwd: ldap files' (cat /etc/passwd ; getent passwd ) |sort -u >/etc/passwd.tmp && mv /etc/passwd.tmp /etc/passwd > So should I have the indexes on the fileserver (one instance), or should they > be on each cluster machine's private storage (possibly several instances; > one per cluster machine)? The suggestion is that if you need to have mailboxes over NFS, use local disk for indexes. If you read the complete list archive you will find too many people that have had troubles with indexes over NFS. Local indexes have a performance penalty, only when you have access from different imap servers (especially concurrent) . apap

[Dovecot] mysql-5.0.26 stored procedure authorization, take 2
by Chaos Engine 22 Oct '06

22 Oct '06

Last time I came up with a problem with concernin MySQL authorization with stored procedures. Timo helped me get going by with modified client_flags (MULTISTATEMENT keyword). Now all it happened again but from another way. My stored proce for MySQL is causing fillowing error: "Oct 21 12:39:22 haos dovecot: auth-worker(default): sql(user,192.168.X.X): Password query fai led: Commands out of sync; you can't run this command now" Looks like it is partly mysql-5.0.26 thing because of this: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/commands-out-of-sync.html On the other hand with my previous mysql installation (mysql-5.0.24-r1) this error is gone (I checked by downgrading). My dovecot-sql.conf: driver = mysql connect = host=/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock dbname=mailbase user=mailuser password=******** client_flags=65536 #655536 is equivalent of CLIENT_MULTI_STATEMENTS flag #yes, I still insist on using stored proc for authorization. This gives me few usefull features I like. password_query = call Authenticat('%u', '%n', '%d') With this config on mysq-5.0.26 I get "...Commands out of sync; you can't run this command now..." but not on mysql-5.0.24-r1. Personally I think mysql guys changed something; I can't tell what and why (changelog review?) Maybe you guys know what it was? -- Chaos greets U

[Dovecot] Using saslauthd with dovecot
by Gerard Seibert 21 Oct '06

21 Oct '06

FreeBSD 6.1 STABLE Postfix-2.4-20061006 Dovecot-1.0.rc7 I am using 'saslauthd -a sasldb -c' for authentication with Postfix. Since Dovecot and Postfix are using the same users and passwords, I was wondering if it would be possible to use this mechanism with Dovecot also. -- Gerard "There is nothing wrong with making love with the light on. [Dovecot] Virtual Users
by Gerard Seibert 20 Oct '06

20 Oct '06

Dovecot 1.0.rc7 Postfix 2.4-20061006 FreeBSD 6.1 STABLE I have dovecot up and running with postfix. I now want to switch over to a system using purely virtual users. I have gotten postfix configured to deliver the mail to virtual mailboxes correctly. The problem I am having is with dovecot. After configuring the dovecot.conf file, dovecot will POP mail from the virtual mailboxes. However, that is only for users who are in the /etc/password file. I will have a large number of users who are truly virtual and therefore not be in that file. I know I am dumb, but I do not know how to set up either a MySQL data base, or just a plain flat file with the required information. I tried Googling, but I cannot find the exact syntax to use. Perhaps someone could point me in the right direction or give me a brief example of how to go about this. Thanks! -- Gerard "It is not the OS's job to stop you from shooting your foot. [Dovecot] md5 password storage
by Andrey Bibiano Jardim 20 Oct '06

Hi List. I've got a dovecot running with mysql. All my users data are there. But I intend to use MD5 instead of clear passwords at MySQL. Someone can help-me? []s; Andrey Here's my dovecot-mysql.conf: # Dovecot queries db_host = localhost db_unix_socket = /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock db_port = 3306 db = mail db_user = my_conn_user db_passwd = my_conn_passwd # # Pehapes i need to change this, but I tryied changing it do md5 with no success. # default_pass_scheme = PLAIN # # This I changed for own reasons, but works. # password_query = SELECT clear FROM postfix_users WHERE user=substring_index('%u', "@", 1) user_query = SELECT concat('/var/spool/mail/', maildir) AS mail, uid, gid FROM postfix_users WHERE user=substring_index('%u', "@", 1)

[Dovecot] 1.0.rc10 in inetd mode
by Phil Oleson 20 Oct '06

Hey.. I'm finding that I can force dovecot (setup in inetd mode) into a wedged state by spamming it with carrage returns. As I've not had enough time to familiarize myself with the code.. I thought I'd ping the list before 1.0 is christened. -Phil.

[Dovecot] Problem with indexes
by crs 20 Oct '06

20 Oct '06

Hello. Dovecot is really good software but I have one big problem with indexes. I have server with a lot of mailboxes - filesystem has quota enabled and I can't resign it from different reasons. When mailbox achieve quota size and user wants to pick mails via pop3, error "-ERR Mailbox is in inconsistent state, please relogin." is given. I know it's because dovecot can't write indexes. Is it possible to force dovecot to write indexes with definite owner/group f.e dovecot/dovecot and not owner/group of mailbox? I can set quotas for user dovecot to unlimited and problem would disappear. Thanks in advance for any answers. Best regards - Chris. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PS. >>> http://link.interia.pl/f19a6

[Dovecot] POP State
by LDB 20 Oct '06

20 Oct '06

I upgraded Dovecot and it was smooth except some of my users using POP3 and leaving their mail on the server, are getting all their mail again. Is there a way to prevent this from happening in the future? /var/run/dovecot was kept during the upgrade ... Thanks, LDB

[Dovecot] Subscription file
by Steven F Siirila 19 Oct '06

Background: We are a UW-IMAP shop, using mbox format. (!) We are in the process of upgrading to Dovecot, hopefully to 1.0 proper. :) One of the modifications we have been using in test versions of Dovecot involve the move of the user subscription file from: IMAP-root/.subscriptions to: $HOME/.mailboxlist Rather than having to make changes to Dovecot source code each time a new release comes out, it would seem to make sense to have a way to configure this from dovecot.conf. Something like: # Default (%i denotes IMAP root): #imap_subscription_file = %i/.subscriptions # UW-imap-style (%h denotes home directory): #imap_subscription_file = %h/.mailboxlist While it makes sense to me to have the subscription file where it is in Dovecot by default, it would be a substantial undertaking to determine where to move the .mailboxlist to in our environment for each user, since there is no easy way to determine what a user's IMAP root directory is set to in their client. [Dovecot] open-folder limit
by T. Horsnell 19 Oct '06

Is there a way to limit the number of folders a user can have open simultaneously? I seem to remember a config option which would only permit one imap process per user, and would share this between his folders, but I cant find anything relevant in the docs now. Am I talking nonsense here? I'm new to Dovecot. Cheers, Terry.
