dovecot(a)dovecot.org Hello, I have been doing my first BasicInstall of Dovecot, following the documentation for VirtualUsers, and piecing together suggestions from other on the list, and out on the web. Looking at the libraries linked into the "/usr/local/dovecot/libexec/dovecot/imap" executable, I see /usr/local/ssl/lib/libssl.0.9.8.dylib (compatibility version 0.9.8, current version 0.9.8) /usr/local/ssl/lib/libcrypto.0.9.8.dylib (compatibility version 0.9.8, current version 0.9.8) /usr/lib/libgcc_s.1.dylib (compatibility version 1.0.0, current version 1.0.0) /usr/lib/libSystem.B.dylib (compatibility version 1.0.0, current version 88.1.6) And, seeing if "/usr/local/ssl/lib/libssl.0.9.8.dylib", exists, ls /usr/local/ssl/lib/libssl.0.9.8.dylib /usr/local/ssl/lib/libssl.0.9.8.dylib Can someone help? [Dovecot] Acl, Namespace, User Confusion

I'm using dovecot RC6. I have a group named "cmpymail" with 2 users "jdoe(a)arinbe.com" and "jsmith(a)arinbe.com". I set up a mail folders like: drwxrwx--- 4 cmpymail cmpymail 4096 2006-08-13 02:21 cmpymail drwxrwx--- 3 jdoe users 4096 2005-11-21 13:34 jdoe drwxrwx--- 3 jsmith users 4096 2006-08-13 02:27 jsmith drwxrwx--- 3 fred users 4096 2006-08-13 02:27 fred drwxrwx--- 3 wilma users 4096 2006-08-13 02:27 wilma In dovecot.conf namespace public { separator = . prefix = COMPANY. location = maildir:/home/services/mail/arinbe.com/company/Maildir:CONTROL=%h/shared-se… hidden = no } I have a dovecot-shared file -rw-rw---- 1 cmpymail cmpymail 0 2006-08-13 13:24 dovecot-shared What I can not do is restrict access to cmpymail to -just- jdoe and jsmith. I've looked at http://www.dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2006-June/013683.html I've tried adding mail_plugin_dir = /usr/local/lib/dovecot/imap mail_plugins = acl and a dovecot-acl file owner user=jdoe(a)arinbe.com lrwstiekxa user=jsmith(a)arinbe.com lrwstiekxa user=jdoe rwstiekxa user=jsmith lrwstiekxa I am not exactly sure what username to use. All users are in LDAP. The "cmpymail" group shows # getent group cmpymail:*:5555:jdoe,jsmith Nothing I do seems to work. I either get errors that wilma and fred can't access cmpymail, for instance when wilma/fred try to subscribe to folders, or wilma and fred have complete access to cmpymail (if I change cmpymail's group to users instead of cmpymail). Is there a way to restrict access like I want? Thanks, Jim

Dear Tim Schafer, Take a look at my sample dovecot-ldap.conf hosts = localhost dn = cn=root,dc=ceylonlinux,dc=com dnpass = secret ldap_version = 3 base = dc=ceylonlinux,dc=com deref = never scope = subtree user_attrs = mail,homeDirectory=mailMessageStore,uidNumber=1003,gidNumber=1003 user_filter = (&(objectClass=user)(mail=%u)) pass_attrs = mail=user,userPassword=password pass_filter = (&(objectClass=user)(mail=%u)) default_pass_scheme = CRYPT user_global_uid = 1003 user_global_gid = 1003 Here I am using my own schema called "user", but in your case change it to inetOrgPerson or the schema name you are using. I think the most common problem in this process is the ldap filter. Above in my configuration user_filter and pass_filter are used as ldap filters for querying user name and password. There I am using mail attribute. gid and uid are belong to the user vmail. [Dovecot] auth failure with digest-md5

Hi! I'm using: Dovecot 1.0.beta8 OpenBSD 3.9 KMail 1.9.3 My password file contains only one user now. I've changed its password to a dumb one: 'asd' (so this is not a wrong password failure :) I've configured the PLAIN and DIGEST-MD5 mechanisms in dovecot.conf, and I'm only using pop3. Also I've turned on the verbose auth logging, and I'm attaching the logs inline. My password db contains the {DIGEST-MD5} prefixed password. The problem is very simple but very weird. I start the dovecot server and try to log in. It succeeds, I'm happy. But after one (the first) success, all further logins fails. Yes this a sometimes working/sometimes not problem, which is rare in this business... [Dovecot] LDAP Auth problems with auth_bind=yes

Hi, I first posted this problem a day or two ago and have not seen any responses yet. To clarify my problem, I am authenticating virtual users against Active Directory on Win2k3, where their login id is their email address. [Dovecot] How to change passwords on LDAP Server?

Dear List People Someone here could please send me some advice on changin' LDAP passwords? It seems that everything is working nice, except by dovecot: I can send emails using my new LDAP password trought postfix smtp authentication, I can login to my Intranet website and to the Mod-LDAP protected pages on my company. I just can't POP my mail messages, because Dovecot says "dovecot-auth: ldap(user(a)company.net): password mismatch". I guess this is because I'm incorrectly coding the password. Please help me to figure out the right way to crypt the password so Dovecot can read this from the LDAP. *Extra* *Information:* I made a simpler and smaller test version of the program that I use to change passwords, its attached to the email. The essentials are there. *Versions:* My dovecot is a Debian/Sarge (Stable) 3.1 package. I'm also using Perl, Net::LDAP, Apache with Mod_Perl and OpenLDAP. Everything on linux, of course. [Dovecot] OT: best way to move maildirs to another host ?

Hi, I'm sorry because this mail is a little bit off-topic, but Timo's email titled "1.0RC7 Released" made me think about a possible issue for me. I have to move an old dovecot installation (1.0b2) from an i386 server to a new x86_64 server running latest available dovecot. My concern is about moving all my users' mail stored as maildir onto this new server. What would be the best way to do that ? >From Timo's comment on 32bits->64bits migration, I guess I'll have to move only the maildirs (and get rid of dovecot cache files), right ? Next, from what I remember about maildir, the message names usually contain the inode so that the file name is unique. If I strictly move the files, I can be sure that the moved files won't have the same inodes number as what is in the name. Should I care ? Hi, I'm migrating accounts from one server with dovecot mbox and pam nss-ldap authentication to a new server with dovecot maildir and mysql auth (no posix accounts). My problem is the pop3 uidl format on the two servers are different, even though I'm using pop3_uidl_format = %08Xu%08Xv in both configs, I'm always re-downloading left messages on my test runs. Is there a way I could reuse the X-UID and X-IMAPbase headers on the converted mails. Issuing the UIDL command via pop3 always give a different result for the mbox and maildir spools. The X-UID and X-IMAPbase headers are present in the converted mails. The first number of X-IMAPbase maps to the mail UIDVALIDITY and the second is the same as X-UID, the mail uid. Thanks.

Is it possible to have local users with mail in maildir:%h/.maildir and virutal users with mail in maildir:/home/exim/%u/.maildir I seem to have authentication working for both local users and LDAP users. But I'm getting this error trying to access a virtual users mail. I rewrote much of the kqueue code since the old code didn't handle properly the case when both input and output I/O handlers were added to the same file descriptor with different callbacks. This is done commonly in Dovecot, so I'm wondering why more people didn't complain about problems with it.. :) I don't anyway have access to any BSDs so the code is completely untested. Please test how it works before 1.0rc7 :) http://dovecot.org/nightly/dovecot-latest.tar.gz I'd guess the hangs caused by recent RC versions were because the default was to use notify=kqueue instead of notify=none. I changed this back to none unless --with-ioloop=kqueue is used. There are a couple of things in the code that I'm not completely sure of. The kqueue() manual page says that EV_ADD "modifies" the event if it already exists. What exactly does that mean? Does it mean that the filter is replaced, or that it's ORed into the existing one? The same question for the EV_DELETE, does it delete everything or only those filters given in parameters? The code currently assumes ORing and EV_DELETE deleting only the given filters, since this is what the original code also did. I suppose the data and udata parameters don't matter in EV_DELETE since they weren't given originally in ioloop-notify-kqueue.c either, so I left them that way.

I did a few more changes and it seems to be working with FreeBSD. I didn't before realize that event filters weren't bitmasks so that broke things. I'm trying to setup dovecot to work with an existing virtual user database in LDAP in order to replace courier-imap. I have users in LDAP with dn of the following form cn=Firstname Lastname,ou=company,dc=domain,dc=com and the uid attribute containes a userid of the form flastname The on disk format for an account is: /home/exim/<uid>/.maildir My first problem is that I cannot get dovecot to authenticate the existing DNs It complains: dovecot: auth(default): plain(?,ipaddress): Username contains disallowed characters I'm assuming it doesn't like the spaces. Any way around this? Also, I don't see any way to support the seperate username and userid where the username is for authentication and the userid is used for on disk pathname. Hello, I have upgraded my dovecot-0.99.13-3.FC3 to dovecot-1.0-0.beta8.2.fc5 recently and now am having weird problem. If somebody's mailbox has the first line in a form of From "User Name" <user(a)host.domain.edu> Thu Oct 7 14:20:00 1999 instead of From user(a)host.domain.edu Thu Oct 7 14:20:00 1999 then that mailbox couldn't be precessed by dovecot. It wasn't a problem with 0.99.13, but it is a problem with 1.0. Is there any fix for that on a dovecot's side? I don't like the idea of going through all 100Gb of mailboxes and fixing the From line. Hi, We recently had a mail storm which resulted in many tens of thousands of e-mails being delivered to each of 4 users in just 5 minutes. This was quickly resolved. However, one more savvy user though he could use the webmail (squirrelmail) to delete the e-mail without downloading it. He gave up on the idea though. I, however, removed the mail directly from the server file system. The problem now is that he has a .imap.index.data file of over 250MB! I have asked him to login again and view all the directories, I even sent him another test and asked him to delete this via webmail. None of this had any effect on the file. I thought the indexes were rebuilt with the deletion of a message? Any ideas? [Dovecot] From passwd-file to Postgresql database

Hello, I have a working installation of Dovecot, which use passwd-file for both users and passwords databases. My setup uses CRAM-MD5 for the authentification mechanism and the password in my passwd-file was stored encoded with HMAC-MD5. Now, I want to use Postgresql to replace those passwd-files. So I make the necessary change in my dovecot.conf file : ========================================= userdb sql { args = /etc/dovecot/dovecot-sql.conf } passdb sql { args = /etc/dovecot/dovecot-sql.conf } ========================================= In the dovecot-sql.conf file, I comment out the simplest query, and change the default_pass_scheme to HMAC-MD5 (as in my previous setup). I put my users from the passwd-file into my database, with the same user id, and the same password (starting with {HMAC-MD5}) ... ... but it fails :( The log file says to me : ========== dovecot: 2006-08-14 15:36:12 Info: auth(default): cram-md5(jon,xxx): password mismatch ========== I tried several other password schemes (DIGEST-MD5, PLAIN-MD5, PLAIN), but only PLAIN seems to work (of course, I changed the password in the database accordingly). The documentation isn't very clear about this (or I don't find it ?) : - in an "old" auth.txt, it is written that only PLAIN is supported, but I don't knwo if I can trust it ? - I've got an old dovecot-pgsql.conf (2004, maybe from dovecot 0.9x ?), which said that supported scheme are "PLAIN, PLAIN-MD5, DIGEST-MD5, and CRYPT" So, what I am doing wrong ? I'm currently running a pre 1.0 version of dovecot. Months back I tried to compile beta6, couldn't due to some mysql client libraries issues, and gave up. I'm now trying again with rc6. This is on a fedora core2 box, with postfix 2.3 and mysql 5.0. The error I'm getting when I run make is below. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks! hi im new to imap servers and dovecot ... and im trying to setup acls for my imap folders i made dovecot-acl in my ~/Maildir/ root, but the setting are only applyed to inbox (.INBOX) folder is there a way to setup acl for other folders i made ..for instance work (.work folder in maildir root) another thing ...it is posibile to accomplish that i can move mail between folders but i cant delete it? greetings, rado

Hello, I have upgraded my dovecot-0.99.13-3.FC3 to dovecot-1.0-0.beta8.2.fc5 recently and now am having weird problem. If somebody's mailbox has the first line in a form of From "User Name" <user(a)host.domain.edu> Thu Oct 7 14:20:00 1999 instead of From user(a)host.domain.edu Thu Oct 7 14:20:00 1999 then that mailbox couldn't be precessed by dovecot. It wasn't a problem with 0.99.13, but it is a problem with 1.0. Is there any fix for that on a dovecot's side? I don't like the idea of going through all 100Gb of mailboxes and fixing the From line. Hey all, Got a super simple question that I can't find an answer to on google or on the list. I want dovecot to listen to port 143 and another port as well for imap. Is this possible? The dovecot.conf has a little note that says "If you want to specify ports # for each service, you will need to configure these settings inside the # protocol imap/pop3 { ... } section, so you can specify different ports # for IMAP/POP3." but in the protocol section for imap, I don't see any example or what not of changing the port. Probably a newbie question.... sorry. Did a deluser a week or so ago, but didn't remove any of the users files. I re-enabled the user via useradd with the -u and set the uid the same as it was before. Now when I try and log the user into his mail via Thunderbird, /var/log/messages reports dovecot(pam_unix)[17259]: authentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty= ruser= rhost= user=sean Any help is appreciated. [Dovecot] stale imap processes with 1.0.rc6 on FreeBSD

Was running dovecot-1.0.rc2 but many stale imap processes (only one user of IMAP). Switched to dovecot-1.0.rc6 but problem continued. This is on FreeBSD 4 something. Maybe it has bug with kqueue?? I read messages about the stale imap processes on the list. It seems to hit *BSD systems. But email about new release candidate indicated it should be fixed. I read on the pkgsrc commit list about --with-ioloop=best So I configured with that and saw that the I/O loop method is now kqueue. (I saved configure output and it was poll before). But the stale imap processes problem continues. For one user over past couple hours I have eight imap processes in "I" state. I have: File offsets ........................ : 64bit I/O loop method ..................... : kqueue File change notification method ..... : kqueue Building with SSL support ........... : yes (OpenSSL) Building with IPv6 support .......... : yes Building with pop3 server ........... : yes Building with mail delivery agent .. : yes Building with GSSAPI support ........ : no Building with user database modules . : static prefetch passwd passwd-file checkpassword (modules) Building with password lookup modules : passwd passwd-file pam checkpassword (modules) Building with SQL drivers ............: And I have: protocols = imap pop3 protocol imap { imap_client_workarounds = outlook-idle delay-newmail } (Just started using delay-newmail today.) My maillogs don't show any problems. The IMAP user tells me that Outlook says it has reset connections often. I see multiple imap-login Login within a few minutes for this same user who said received a connection reset in outlook at the same time. Just received a screenshot that said: Microsoft Office Outlook Failed to update headers. The TCP/IP connection unexpectedly terminated by the server. Then also received an error (in Outlook I think), like: imap session idle too long, connection reset (I don't have or use Outlook myself so can't test myself.) It is used for a lot of pop3 and seems fine with that. (It uses stunnel for pop3s but not imaps for over a week to eliminate stunnel from our troubleshooting). [Dovecot] Dovecot - Issue with Maildir++ quotas

Hi, I've been bitten by an issue running Squirrelmail on top of Dovecot using Maildir++ quotas. Having configured these quotas in Dovecot, I notice that Dovecot appears not to exclude the 'Trash' folder from its quota calculation (which it should do, according to the Maildir++ spec). Unfortunately this breaks Squirrelmail if I try to delete a message from a close-to-quota mailbox - as per July's thread: "Maildir++ quota - how to handle a full mailbox" Which unfortunately means that a fairly full mailbox can become 'Wedged' with Dovecot/Squirrelmail in this situation with its owner unable to delete messages if that's the only way they access their mailbox. I took a look at the source and found the 'Quota exceeded' lines in src/plugins/quota/quota-storage.c but didn't understand it well enough to dive in... except to notice that the 'Trash' folder doesn't appear to get excluded from the calculations. cheers, Andrew.

Hi! It seems there are problem with POP3 connection when TLS enabled. Previously it worked fine, but for now it doesn't... Plain & SSL POP3 works. Plain, TLS & SSL IMAP works too. Hello List, I've upgraded to dovecot from FreeBSD ports, changed the config from previous 0.99 version, but meet a problem with %d variable beeing empty in userdb static configuration directive. Our server supports multiple domains, e.g. 'mxc.ru' and 'mail.mxc.ru'. Users can log into using their full e-mail address like antonm(a)mxc.ru or antonm(a)mail.mxc.ru, but the feature of adding default domain should also be present, e.g. when logging with user name 'antonm' server should assume username to be 'antonm(a)mxc.ru' cause 'mxc.ru' is the default domain. This wroked fine in 0.99 version, but, alas, I can't get it working in newer version. [Dovecot] Migrating from qpopper to dovecot

Hi, I am planning a migration from Qpopper 4.0.5 to Dovecot.. I need to use mbox format (because Openwebmail does not have native Maildir support yet) and pop3. The system will have about 1500 users, once migrating is complete. To avoid users downloading their mailboxes all over again, i need to set "pop3_reuse_xuidl = yes".. But that option works since Dovecot 1.0alpha1. RHEL has latest stable version 0.99.11-2. So let me rephrase my question: is latest dovecot (1.0.rc6) stable enough to handle the load (mbox with pop3) or should I wait for the stable version to come out.. I want to avoid trouble under heavy load and/or with different pop3 clients. I found some problem reports of mbox related issues from dovecot mailing list. I could go with latest Qpopper 4.0.8, trading speed to safety.. If you have any similar experiences, please share your knowledge ;-) -- asko

[Dovecot] LDAP Authorising users from Active Directory

Hi, I am having stability problems setting up dovecot to authenticate virtual users against Active Directory on Win2k3. If the correct userid and password are used, everything works fine, see first logfile snippet below. If an unknown userid is used, again everything works fine. If I try logging in with a valid userid but get the password wrong, that connection is rejected (see second logfile snippet), and all subsequent connection even with correct userid/password are rejected with thunderbird getting a temporary auth failure (see third logfile snippet below). I am using auth_bind = yes and it seems as though after the failed login with an incorrect password, dovecot is loosing the dn & dnpass settings for the initial user lookup. I have found numerous references to PHP and ActiveDirectory on Win2k3 getting a similar "ldap_search() failed: Operations error" error and they suggested ensuring LDAP Version 3 is used and the Deref is set to 'never'. I am already using these setting to no avail. Has anyone else experience these problems, or have any suggestions on how to overcome it ? I've been using 1.0rc5 since August 2nd. Thunderbird users on multiple platforms haven't had any problems saving messages to the Sent mailbox. I know from reading release notes that the SSL proxy code in rc5 is different from rc6, but I have to admit to being leery about upgrading since it works for me. Greetings - I've got an interesting issue that has cropped up due to some brain-dead "functionality" in mobile Windows Mobile clients... Our mail infrastructure traditionally uses "Sent" as our sent items folder. This is the default. However, WM puts it's sent messages in a folder called "Sent Items", and does not let you change it. Is there any proper and/or elegant way to alias the Sent folder to Sent Items (and allow both to coexist as the same message store) in an automated fashion without needing to set this up for each user? The RPM requires the above SQL library module, among others (inc. postgresql and sqlite). However: 1. Why do I need ANY SQL library??? I want PAM to do the authorization. 2. If I have to use SQL, I want Dovecot to use PostgreSQL (which I have installed and am using in another application). I hope the above is a dumb question, because that means the fix is easy. Hi, I run a Postfix/Dovecot server with Outlook 2002, Thunderbird clients as well as a Squirrelmail setup. All use IMAP to query the server. I recently converted our mail spool from mbox to maildir. After the conversion, one of the users is receiving two types of error messages which appear in a popup window. 1. The first popup says the following The UI D of a message changed unexpectedly. This typically indicates a server bug. Your program may not function properly after this. It then gives details of the MsgSeqNum, old UID and the new UID. 2. The second popup says Your server has reported a UID which does not comply with the IMAP standard. This typically indicates a server bug. Your program may not function properly after this. Ive searched for this on google and it has been reported before, but there are no reports of a solution or workaround. I would really appreciate any pointers or suggestions. I am using Dovecot IMAP and added an IMAP folder to an Outlook client which is also popping another account. Both account folders exist in the same client. I am wondering if I can drag the pop-ed mail to the IMAP folder, thereby transferring old mail to the IMAP folder? Outlook allows me to click and drag folders into the IMAP folder. You see where I am going with this, I wnat to transition from the old POP accounts to the new IMAP accounts and delete the old folders. Is this possible? Hi, I just had a go at enabling ACLs with 1.0b5. As per the docs I've done the configuration bit: protocol imap { .. mail_plugins = acl } ... plugin { acl = vfile:/usr/local/etc/dovecot-acls } and created the dovecot-acls file. Timo, I nervously ran rc6 plus the patch: http://dovecot.org/tmp/ssl-proxy-openssl.c on my Solaris 9 box, in production, this morning. My dovecot.conf file is attached. Like similar reports for BSD, rc6 fell over after an hour and a half. The final syslog message was: dovecot: [ID 920869 mail.error] Login process died too early - shutting down I rolled back to rc2 for production. BTW, last night's CVS compiled ok. Hi, I'm running 1.0rc6 on Solaris/SPARC, compiled myself against openssl. Client is Evolution 2.6.2 on my gentoo x86 laptop. As Dovecot is not yet productive, we run it parallel to UW-imap, on other ports. I use TLS. If I configure my evolution client with server-type IMAP, everything works fine. However, dovecot claims IMAP4rev1 support. However, when I set server-type to IMAP4rev1 in evolution, I get a popup : -------------------------------------------------------------------- Evolution popup : Error while Scanning folders in "IMAP server xxx.yyy.com". Hi I installed dovecot-1.0.rc6.tar.gz on Fedora - 5 (i86) with MySQL - 5.0.24 to authenticate pop3 & imap requests. But dovecot doesn't start properly. I got below error from error log Error: Login process died too early - shutting down Error: Child 2521 (login) killed with signal 11 Please help me to sort out this problem as early as possible. Hi, I am experiencing some problems with vacation messages feature. Using dovecot from alpha4 to 1.0.rc6 with lda from cvs, when setting up a vacation message, there is a parameter ":days" which specifies the interval between auto-reply messages. After the first reply, should wait that amount of days before sending a new reply to the same sender. The list of sender addresses is to be kept in $maildir/.dovecot.lda-dupes Now, what happens is that at random intervals, auto-replies are sent. It happens with any account, from thirty minutes to one hour maybe. How is it possible ? How to fix it ?

Hi, I have a problem after upgrading dovecot 1.0rc1 to 1.0rc6. I don't use SSL at all so I have 'ssl_disable = yes' in my configuration. This works fine in 1.0rc1 but dovecot 1.0rc6 failed to start with the following error message "dovecot: Login process died too early - shutting down". Setting 'ssl_disable = no' resolves the problem but now dovecot announce TLS capability which is not what I want. I have many errors of this type in my logs: 2 * postfix/pipe[21511]: BC8DD3356A: to=<*****@******>, relay=dovecot, delay=1001, status=bounced (Command time limit exceeded: "/usr/local/dovecot-1.0-rc2/libexec/dovecot/deliver") My command time limit is 1000s in postfix (more than 15 minutes) After many check, I found that a lots of this error is not really an error. The mail is delivered in the mailbox, but postfix send an error message. Like if Dovecot LDA process dont exit correctly after sending a mail. Do you know this bug ? As workaround i set the command time limit to 1400s but this is too long for our customer. They need in time service. We use an NFS server as storage for all our mail. Hello, quota support is out of action on xfs filesystem on my centos 4.x . Problem is that i haven't these file #include <linux/dqblk_xfs.h> on my system. Solution is simple. After instalation xfsprogs-devel you get necessary files, but you must use another header file in dovecot/src/plugins/quota/quota-fs.c. Instead <linux/dqblk_xfs.h> you should use <xfs/xqm.h>. If you advise me, how can i detect if <xfs/xqm.h> exist instead <linux/dqblk_xfs.h>, i can send patch back. So I just upgraded from Dovecot 0.99 to the latest 1.0 RC2 because I was having all sorts of Authentication problems and crashes in 0.99. The upgrade did not solve the problem apparently. Dovecot still crashes periodically and always needs to be manually rebooted. So it looks like that something is wrong with the indexes or the algorithm. For details have a look below. BTW: procmail filtering through deliver works well now for me in production environment. I tried to deliver some large mails (~50MB) which worked well. After sending around 500MB (10 Mails) I opened the mailbox with pine over imap. It still took a lot of time (>20s) to open the mbox. Final 1.0 release is looking to get closer. There's nothing left in my TODO list for it, so please report any old and new bugs you see. Now we just assume that the connection is secure if the local IP matches the remote IP address. * SSL code rewrite which hopefully makes it work better than before. Seems to work correctly, but if you suddently have trouble with SSL connections this is likely the reason. + verbose_ssl=yes: Log also SSL alerts and BIO errors - If namespace's location field wasn't set, the default location was supposed to be used but it wasn't. - When copying ssl-parameters.dat file from /var/lib to /var/run its permissions went wrong if it couldn't be copied with hard linking. - Fixed filesystem quota plugin to work with BSDs. - Maildir: Saving mails didn't work if quota plugin was enabled (again) - Maildir: Messages' received time wasn't saved properly when saving/copying multiple messages at a time. Also if using quota plugin the S= size was only set for the first saved file, and even that was wrong. - passdb passwd-file: Don't require valid uid/gid fields if file isn't also being used as a userdb. - PostgreSQL: Handle failures better so that there won't be "invalid fd" errors in logs. - Don't try to expunge messages if the mailbox is read-only. It'll just cause our index files to go out of sync with the real mailbox and cause errors. - ANONYMOUS authentication mechanism couldn't work because anonymous_username setting wasn't passed from master process.

Hi folks. I was doing some testing this morning and realized Dovecot RC2 isn't fully compliant with the maildir++ specification. Most notably, it appears that Dovecot isn't creating a "maildirfolder" file (0 byte length) in folders it creates. >From http://www.inter7.com/courierimap/README.maildirquota.html "Within each subdirectory there's an empty file, maildirfolder. Its existence tells the mail delivery agent that this Maildir is a really a folder underneath a parent Maildir++." and "Make sure to create the maildirfolder file in any new folders created within the Maildir++." Also, GETQUOTAROOT on a folder (with messages in it) will always return the entire usage, not the usage in the folder itself. For example: INBOX - really has 100 mb of messages. Sent - has a few messages totalling 1mb. Drafts - no messages A GETQUOTAROOT on INBOX will return 101 mb, 100mb for INBOX and 1mb for Sent. Drafts will show zero, because there's nothing. Unfortunately, Sent will also show 101 mb, not 1mb. While Dovecot shouldn't be creating maildirsize files in each folder (the maildirfolder file is there to tell clients to look in .. for a maildirsize) ... it should still be able to answer queries about the number of messages (count of files in the folder) as well as the total size of all messages in that folder (sum of S=xxxx or by stat() on individual message files). [Dovecot] Developing new Dspam Plugin

This email /was/ going to be a bit of a bitch about trying to get mysql compiled in to a dovecot plugin, but I got it all working before I finished the email! :-D Ok, basically what I am doing (Johannes permission) is modifying the dspam plugin, so that it instead talks to a database (MySQL in this case), and updates a table, so that you can do the actual training at a time of lower load. It /does/ require MySQL >= 5 cause I am using stored PROCEDURE's, which gives you the advantage, that you can use the same plugin, without changing anything, regardless of what your database looks like, or how you want the database to work! :-D I have successfully modified Johannes plugin to call SPAM and HAM in the database, with the signatures, and also upgraded it to work with beta9. I also made the small change of a define for the Spam folder, so that if your Spam folder is named differently, you don't have to change the code in 2-3 places as well ;-) I am yet to write any 'batch' code for processing the database tables, but that is fairly trivial, and I could even write it in php if I wanted ;-) (If you want something to do, go ahead and write me a C client to do this! [Dovecot] Complex MySQL query in dovecot-sql.conf

Is there some limit for the maximum length of the line in dovecot-sql.conf? In particular, I would be writing a long MySQL password query. And further, can a long line be somehow split to several pieces? I tried the common unix-style way of putting backslash as the last character of the first line, but it results in an error immediatedly while restarting Dovecot (while parsing the conf, ie. not a MySQL error): (in conf:) password_query = SELECT user, password FROM users\ WHERE user='%u' AND active='Y' (results in log, line 88 refers to line starting with 'WHERE':) auth(default): Error in configuration file /etc/dovecot-mysql.conf line 88: Expecting '=' The example above is just the beginning, what comes to my question about a long line. I would be checking %r (remote ip) against user-specific allowed ip-address ranges given in the database. Actually, I'd like to use some MySQL user-defined variables within my query, for example to keep only the 3 highest octets of the IPv4 representation of %r (eg. '192.168.0') so I could easily check against allowed /24 networks stored in the database. That seems to run into another problem. A very simplified example what happens when I try to define a variable within the query: (in conf, split to two lines for news only:) password_query = SET @yes='Y'; SELECT user, password FROM users WHERE user='%u' AND active=@yes (results in log:) Password query failed: You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near '; SELECT user, password FROM users WHERE user='testi' AND active=@yes' at line 1 Anyway, a similar one-line construct works from the MySQL command line: SET @yes='Y'; SELECT user, password FROM users WHERE user='testi' AND active=@yes; (reults the following:) +-------+----------+ | user | password | +-------+----------+ | testi | 123 | +-------+----------+ Any ideas? Am I doing something in a completely wrong way? Of course, split lines & variables are not absolutely necessary, they just would improve readability & shorten the query. But if there is no limit on the length of the query, I propably can write everything as a one long SELECT command... [Dovecot] My view on 1.0 release and version numbering

Just throwing out some thoughts here. I know Timo has high standards and is trying to make 1.0 bug free before calling it 1.0. But I want to argue for an earlier less perfect 1.0. Dovecot is already way past the quality of most 1.0 releases. So it is good enough by common standards. No one really expects a 1.0 release to be perfect. But - some people don't consider a product ripe until it reaches 1.0. Once you cross the line then more people will pick it up and you will get more bug reports because of a larger base. This would actually accelerate the debugging process. And it will spur acceptance of the product and perhaps bring in more developer resources. Generally 1.0 is still buggy. It is usually followed quickly with 1.0.1, 1.0.2 ... and then stabilizes. Then as more people ask for new features it spawns 1.1.0 which is somewhat buggy and then 1.1.1 and by 1.1.2 it's rock solid. So - I'm not suggesting Timo go to 1.0 immediately. I'm just saying that I think it's pretty ripe and sooner is better than later. My 2 centz ...

Hi there I'm having difficulties in getting dovecot to run under daemontools. Also, from a sysadmin perspective, so far, I find dovecot's config rather complex - I suppose that's what happens when one attempts to appease all authentication methods... anyway, I digress. I've had a similar issue running Clamav, but a patch to Clamav resolved this? This seems to be related to referencing /dev/stderr directly. Any ideas? Should I be running dovecot as the virtual mailbox user vmail? Before I ramble on about what I've tried, could someone explain to me what dovecot actually does, in terms of privilege separation? The online docs are somewhat convoluted. This would help shed light on the solution. I also noticed the posts re daemontools some time ago, yet they do not include any setup solutions etc - I'd appreciate details from those of you who've succeeded in this regard. Thanks Dale

[Dovecot] userdb prefetch problem..

I have a setup that I'm working on migrating to Dovecot for thousands of users across a few dozen domains.. All users are authed from LDAP.. In LDAP, each user has a unique uidNumber, and varying gidNumber (for use in other applications) As far as mail storage, the entire Maildir structure is owned by UID/GID: vmail/vmail So, the uidNumber/gidNumber from LDAP is not needed. global uid/gid is set to 'vmail' When using "passdb ldap" and "userdb ldap" both pointing to dovecot-ldap.conf, and removing the "uidNumber=uid"..etc from the "_attrs" lines, this works just fine. I would like to use "userdb prefetch" to use one less ldap query, but the uid/gid stuff is giving me some problems. Today I finally caught up with my mail. I've now read all the mails from the Dovecot list from this year and all my private mails from last few years (totaling around 500 unread mails). If you think there's still something I should have replied to, please re-send it because I've either missed it or just skipped it for some reason. (Except there are still a couple of mails from this week I've yet to reply to.) Besides reading mails I've also fixed a lot of bugs today. What's left from my original 1.0 roadmap is: - Solaris sendfile is broken? Is it? Can someone try? You can test it with maildir by setting mail_save_crlf=yes, saving a somewhat large mail and FETCHing it (and truss that it really uses sendfile) - LDA: empty mail gives an error. - quota code should probably be always doing some quota_set_critical() instead of using mail_storage_set_critical(), so that quota_last_error() would work properly - rfc2557 support for BODYSTRUCTURE, as specified by RFC3501 - keywords: add some limits to how many there can be - don't return \* in PERMANENTFLAGS when we're full - mbox: how well does dirty sync + status work? it reads the last mail every time? not very good.. - mbox: dirty state should be stored to index (with mbox_very_dirty_syncs) I think 1.0 could be released without any of those changes. But what about the connection hangs that some people have had? Do they still occur? Is it only with SSL? I guess I should look at my previous ssl-proxy rewrite, figure out what went wrong with it and try again. I'm thinking about releasing 1.0 RC1 within a few days. Would be nice if that release actually worked, so testing would be appreciated :) You can try it by getting the dovecot-latest from http://dovecot.org/nightly/ The current changes include: * PAM: If user's password is expired, give "Password expired" error message to the user. Now actually working thanks to Vaidas Pilkauskas * Relicensed dovecot-auth, lib-sql and lib-ntlm to MIT license. See COPYING file for more information. * Abuse prevention: When creating a mailbox, limit the number of hierarchies (up to 20) and the length of the mailbox name within a hierarchy (up to 200 characters). * mbox: If saved mail doesn't end with LF, add it ourself so that the mails always have one empty line before the next From-line. + Added --with-statedir configure option which defaults to $localstatedir/lib/dovecot. ssl-parameters.dat is permanently stored in that directory and is copied to login_dirs from there. + IMAP: Support SASL-IR extension (SASL initial response) + Support initial SASL response with LOGIN mechanism. Hello, I'm just setting up a new server and wanting to use MySQL for user authentication. Here is what I have: Fedora Core 5: 2.6.17-1.2145_FC5 Dovecot v1.0.rc2 (RPM install from atrpms.net) MySQL v5.0.22 SquirrelMail v 1.4.6-7.fc5 ...Running on a Dual XEON machine I've added the following to dovecot.conf: auth default { passdb sql { args = /etc/dovecot-mysql.conf } userdb sql { args = /etc/dovecot-mysql.conf } The rest of dovecot.conf is standard. /etc/dovecot-mysql.conf has: driver=mysql connect = host=127.0.0.1 port=3306 dbname=maildb user=root client_flags=0 password_query = SELECT password FROM users WHERE id = '%u' user_query = SELECT maildir FROM users WHERE id = '%u' (I've run the SQL queries within mysql and they give the right results) When I start Dovecot the log shows: dovecot: Jul 11 12:47:25 Info: Dovecot v1.0.rc2 starting up dovecot: Jul 11 12:47:27 Info: auth-worker(default): mysql: Connected to 127.0.0.1 (maildb) When I try to log in using SquirrelMail, it takes about 3 seconds, then I get dovecot: Jul 11 12:48:00 Info: imap-login: Aborted login: user=<andrew(a)mail-test.aaisp.net.uk>, method=PLAIN, rip=::ffff:127.0.0.1, lip=::ffff:127.0.0.1, secured ...So, no log of it trying MySQL... Hi, Running the current debian unstable version (1.0.beta2) dovecot tells me: $ /usr/sbin/dovecot --exec-mail imap Error: No protocols given in configuration file Could this be changed? I don't need dovecot listening on any ports but would still like to allow this usage... Or should I configure protocols but no listen addresses instead? [if so the debian package needs an update because it filters out the case of no protocols and doesn't start dovecot in that case] johannes

I'm trying to use dovecot-lda with sieve support using RC6 and sendmail. I followed the instructions at http://wiki.dovecot.org/LDA but could not get them to work with sendmail. Could anybody help? Anybody have an example sendmail macro(s) and/or working sendmail config?

[Dovecot] Duplicate e-mails

Hi, I've got Postfix/Dovecot config mail server, POP3/mbox, and a few users are complaining about duplicate e-mails. User connects with Outlook 2003 to Dovecot to download mail. If you check the mail logs for that message ID, only one copy is delivered to his mailbox. Also, verified that the client is set-up to NOT leave a copy of the message on the server. He downloads a copy of the e-mail once, and then 2 minutes later when his client reconnects to check for mail, he gets another copy of that e-mail. It's not a consistent problem. I check the dovecot logs, and see his client connecting and disconnecting, and always deleting the same number of e-mails it downloads. Is this a network issue or a config issue? The only other thing to note is that it's usually an e-mail sent to a group list that he's a member of. And I've set-up the owner-list setting in the aliases file. So I don't think that's the problem. If anyone can shed some light on this issue, it'd be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Lisa

[Dovecot] Something other than dotlock for uidlist locking?

If I read the code correctly, only dotlocks are supported for locking of dovecot-uidlist. And I don't see any settings in the config file for it. As it turns out, dotlocks are very slow on my system, due to their implementation via hardlinks. Would it be possible to support other locking mechanisms for locking of the uidlist file? -jdb

Actually, it is a frustration: The client does not work, have tried Opera mail and Outlook, to receive mail. the client can send, but not receive. I know the mail is sitting in the user account Maildir ready to be picked up. Dovecot "compiles" fine. What am I doing wrong? Someone please help me, I know it is something simple. I have racked the net trying to find a solution, but no 2 mail setups are the same. My setup is the simplest I can make it. I have Postfix and Dovecot installed on Linux. All recent versions. Plain text authentication off shadow passwords and login user accounts. Mail is configured as Maildir, IMAP. As you can see below, I have turned logs on and there is nothing in them that shows an error. I am on a real static IP behind a firewall. I have opened the SMTP and IMAP ports. BTW, Postfix can send and receive local and outside. IMAP does not work to/fro outside or locally. I have also logged into Dovecot like so: telnet localhost imap 1 login test testing 2 select INBOX It lets me login and I have tried it with root, which it rejects and with another account which works. It selects the INBOX and I hit the return key multiple times to exit because I don't know what else to type. So, it looks like it is authenticating. Postfix is working fine, it can send and receive mail both locally and the outside world. It puts the messages in the Maildir directories as it is supposed to. Hi to all. I upgraded my dovecot from rc5 to rc6. Prior to upgrading, it was working seamlessly. But now I couldn't start dovecot. Here's what the log says: Aug 10 10:39:17 proxy dovecot: Dovecot v1.0.rc6 starting up Aug 10 10:39:18 proxy dovecot: Login process died too early - shutting down Aug 10 10:39:18 proxy dovecot: child 29033 (login) killed with signal 11 Aug 10 10:39:18 proxy dovecot: child 29034 (login) killed with signal 11 Aug 10 10:39:18 proxy dovecot: child 29035 (login) killed with signal 11 Aug 10 10:39:18 proxy dovecot: child 29036 (login) killed with signal 11 Aug 10 10:39:18 proxy dovecot: child 29037 (login) killed with signal 11 Aug 10 10:39:18 proxy dovecot: child 29038 (login) killed with signal 11 I tinkered with the login_* configuration options but to no avail. The only configuration option that I removed is the login_max_logging_users, which is now deprecated in the new version. [Dovecot] IMAP/POP3 proxying and capability

Hi, I setup a rather large POP3/IMAP configuration and want to use dovecot proxying feature. I have noted that the capability announce when connecting via the proxies are not the same before you are authenticated and after. Before you are authenticated the proxy announce is own capability and after it announce the final server capability. The problem is that some (most ? all ?) mail client ask for capability before authenticate to the server. So if the proxy capability are not the same as the final server capability the client gets wrong information. I use the QUOTA extension and it doesn't make sens to activate the quota feature on the proxy. Any other suggestion ? Perdition can hardcode the capability string the his configuration file. [Dovecot] SSL hangs? Try this

Since apparently 1.0 RC5 didn't fix the SSL hangs for everyone, could you try if replacing src/login-common/ssl-proxy-openssl.c with this helps: http://dovecot.org/tmp/ssl-proxy-openssl.c It's basically the old proxying but with some new changes, plus hopefully also fixing the original rarely occurring hang which my rewrite was intended to fix.

[Dovecot] When auth_process_size is reached

What does Dovecot do when dovecot-auth reaches the max size defined by auth_process_size? Does it just prevent it from growing further, or does it cause any problems? Thanks, Bill
