Today I've been trying to get dovecot (1.0 rc2) to use certificates for client side authentication. If my memory serves right, beta8 had no problems with it (although it was some time ago and on different machine). Similar setup works perfectly well for postfix (for authentication that is, on the same machine). Originally I thought I overdid some certificate settings (keyUsage, nsCertType, etc.), so for the sake of testing I've simplified the setup to bare minimum - 1 simple selfsigned root certificate, another 1 for dovecot, and the last one for the user. Unfortunately, the results were the same. Configuration: OpenBSD 3.9 (stable branch), i386, no nfs or afs (only local ffs) standard OpenSSL 0.9.7g (+ patches) dovecot 1.0 rc2, compiled from sources, with sysconfdir set to /etc and with disabled pam Tested with the most recent opera and mozilla thunderbird, using pop3s. (note: both clients work with postfix, authetnicating only by certificates). They do send requested certificates. Important dovecot configuration: ssl_cert_file = /etc/ssl/ca_ppgk/certs/pop3_crt.pem (common name - pop3.ppgk.com.pl, valid dns name) ssl_key_file = /etc/ssl/ca_ppgk/private/pop3_key.pem ssl_ca_file = /etc/ssl/ca_ppgk/ca_crt.pem ssl_verify_client_cert = yes verbose_ssl = yes auth_verbose = yes ssl_require_client_cert = yes ssl_username_from_cert = (tested both with yes and no, with common name of user certificate set both as username@domain or as bare username) The rest is just pretty standard, using passwd for both user auth and userdb, with plain and login mechanisms allowed. I tested "few" sets of certificates (for ca, server and user) with configurations ranging from quite specific ones (with basicConstraints, nsCertType, keyUsage, extendedKeyUsage fields set) to very simple ones (basicConstraints + typical stuff like subjectKeyIdentifier). All of them gave the same results with dovecot (postfix didn't complain with any of them either). Is there some configuration detail I might have missed or messed, or is it (probably) a bug ?

[Dovecot] Group-based filesystem quota

Hello. After using Dovecot for over a year, I have just started experimenting with the filesystem quotas, and I have a suggestion for improvement. On my mail server, I use group-based quotas, and would like to have Dovecot be able to report these quotas. It should be simple to implement, requiring only changes to the quota-fs.c file of the quota plugin. Simply changing USRQUOTA to GRPQUOTA should do the trick. In terms of the configuration file, "quota = fs" could be expanded to something like: quota = fs:storage=group # use filesystem quota with group storage limit Adding in support for message (inode) limits is just as easy, replacing dqb_curblocks with dqb_curinodes and dqb_bsoftlimit with dqb_isoftlimit. It could be easy to configure too, like: quota = fs:storage=group:messages=user # use filesystem quota with group storage limit and user messages limit Although I think I know what would need to be changed, I'm not a C programmer and my code would not be clean nor efficient. Since the messages and storage parameters of the quota setting are defined elsewhere (quota-maildir.c), I don't think it would be too difficult to duplicate this in the quota-fs.c file. Also, I am having the same problem as others with used space off by a factor of 4096, total limit off by a factor of 4. Stian's patch (http://dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2006-June/014159.html) does the trick, but I'm wondering if everyone is having this problem, or just those running Linux. Thanks, Scott

[Dovecot] Corrupted index & index data file

We just moved to a new box for POP/IMAP services. I rsynced /home and /var/spool/mail to the new box from the old with the archive switch. It went smoothly but I am seeing more corrupted index & index data file errors in the log than I normally do. I thought I read that Dovecot would rebuild these files after the user accessed them the second time, if corrupt. Is this correct ? Is there a better way to deal with this issue other than deleting them so they are recreated the next time the user checks their mail ? james <jedwards(a)nmcourts.com>

[Dovecot] PAM Error on POP3s auth? And apop?

Fellow Dovecot'ers, I've -almost- got Dovecot completely functional, and I will add that it works just fine for non-authenticated POP3. The problem begins when I try to use authentication for same against the system's /etc/passwd section. I did some googling for that pam_start error, and discovered (much to my annoyance) that it may be a system bug within NetBSD 3.0. If that's the case, given that I don't have anywhere near the programming skill to even try and correct it, it'll mean I'm pretty much stuck until the NetBSD developers fix it, or until I can figure out an alternate authentication method that won't be an administrative nightmare. Does anyone have any ideas on this? As I said, further thoughts would be welcome. If it is a NetBSD system bug causing that pam_auth error, ideas for a simple workaround until the NetBSD crew gets things patched up would also be welcome. [Dovecot] LDAP: bind to LDAP server instead of retreiving a password from it?

Hi, Dovecot currently treats an LDAP user/password database the same way as a text or SQL based database: it just tries to retreive the (hashed) password for a given username. LDAP however has the capability to authenticate the user itself: dovecot could try to bind to LDAP with the given username and password, and if authentication succeeded, the LDAP server returns the other info (uid, homedir, ...), but not the password. I know at least qmail's pop3 server uses LDAP this way. Could this authentication mechanism be implemented in Dovecot as well? Geert

Today I upgraded to dovecot 1.0 rc1 (before I was using a 1.0 beta, as it had functions no one else had), the beta worked fairly well, no crashes, and the bugs were few and far between. I had a few issues with thunderbird 1.5, so I decided to upgrade. My problem is this, before, I had configured procmail to deliver SPAM to a subdirectory of the users home directory, (not mail/) and everything worked fine, new directories were creatable, and IMP seemed to be happy with everything as it was. With the new version though, dovecot refuses to see the folders in the base of the home directory, and all of this with absolutely no change to my conf file (except for the passdb and userdb options). my dovecot.conf file looks like this: default_mail_env = mbox:/ha/home/%u:INBOX=/ha/mail/%u:INDEX=/ha/home/%u ha is my drbd directory, for high availability. I've tried modifying the private namespaces, but without much luck, and I'm really not looking forward to moving all those folders to under the mail/ directory. Do I have any other options?? thanks, Nick

Hello. We are using dovecot right now, but the boss pushes the MS based system (Exchange, Sharepoint, Active Directory etc) to use. However, skipping the other parts I'd like to keep open source based mail server and the question is - can the dovecot authenticate against the MS Active Directory without any problems? -- Sysadmin

Fellow dovecot'ers, I'm just getting started with Dovecot, and I'm not a programmer, so please be gentle. ;-) THE PLATFORM: NetBSD 3.0/SPARC, Postfix 2.3-RC8, current Dovecot RC (I forgot the number). Maildir-type directories. THE GOAL: To accommodate authenticated (remote) POP3 users with APOP or SSL/TLS, and allow users on the internal network (192.168.x.x) to just use basic POP3 without worrying about authentication. QUESTIONS: (1) Does the dovecot master daemon have to be running in order to call pop3- login from inetd, in response to POP connection attempts? If so, it could be a problem. I'm getting this error when I try to start the thing. featherweb: {339} /usr/local/sbin/dovecot Fatal: listen(110) failed: Address already in use featherweb: {340} (2) For apop authentication, how do I go about generating the shared secret file locally, for each user? Is there a script that came with dovecot or...? (3) Is there a trick, similar to postfix's 'postconf -n,' that will give a condensed output of dovecot's configuration file? (4) I'm currently using sasl auth for Postfix's SMTP auth function. How difficult is it to use Dovecot for the same thing? (5) GAAAAHHHHH! (repost gmane message as list member) I need some help with Dovecot-1.0rc2 on Gentoo Linux. My test harness is one Thunderbird-1.5.0.4 client, storage using legacy mbox directories ported over from an old UW-IMAP/sendmail combo running on RHL 8. Config is intended to be passwd/pam, plaintext login allowed (until I migrate everyone to ssl). After this is working, postfix and dspam are to be added, unless someone can recommend a 'dovecot of smtp' to use. I'll tail the mail.log to illustrate the problem, then excerpt what I think are the relevant directory and config file listings. Just a heads up for all interested in using the Dovecot LDA with SIEVE scripting: I've started work on a proof-of-concept managesieve daemon, since the only one available right now is dependent on Cyrus. It appears that the only choice available for sites not using timsieved is the Ingo component of Horde, which is way too fat to install by itself (plus it uses FTP for a transport, which I make it a rule not to install). For testing purposes, I am hacking together a Perl module based on the Net::Server model (which is not suitable for production). If this goes well (the managesieve protocol is painfully stupid and the only tricky part is linking in libsieve), then I'll do a rewrite in C. It will authenticate directly to Dovecot through the auth-client (or auth-master) mechanism, so whatever SASL methods that Dovecot supports, it will support. I've decided that the eventual server will be called timosieved, in honor of our host, and echoing the original Cyrus timsieved. [Dovecot] default_mail_env and IMAP server directory in client

Hi, I'm currently installing a dovecot Server to be a replacement for an uw-imapd. I dont want to touch the clients configuration, because I have too much users... Situation is the following: the mbox files are in the users homedirectory (~/MailImap), automounted via nfs In dovecot.conf I've set default_mail_env = mbox:%h/MailImap:INBOX=/var/mail/%u It works perfect without a value in Firefox' setting 'IMAP server directory' but in all clients tis is set to '~/MailImap' so it doesnt show subfolders I already tried to symlink various things in the MailImap directory and different values of default_mail_env, but I cannot mak it work. Any suggestions? It would help if dovecot could discard the IMAP server directory setting of the client, but I am not a programmer and dont know where to look in the source :-( -- TIA dirk

Hey Guys, I want to transition from Merak to Postfix/Dovecot. I am not sure how to begin. I have been reading the different Howtos - cocktail of services to Postfix like ClamAV, Spamassissin, Greylisting, Jamm, SquirrelMail. The thing is that I want stable IMAP mail. Here is what I want to do: a. Stand alone linux box for email only - 25 users b. provide IMAP and web c. provide SSL authentication, spam filtering and virus checking. d. I would perfer to setup flat file, or unix based SIMPLE authentication scheme. e. Current users are on windows and are popping mail. Although we have LDAP, can we have another LDAP server which lives with existing server? f. I have Fedora 5 installed. I have Dovecot, Postfix, Cyrus-SASL installed. Our's though is that we authenticate using SFU and nis. So in addition to the folder needing to be lowercase, the username has to be as well. [Dovecot] bug/feature

I don't know if this has been mentioned here or even thought of in the grand scheme of things and I'm just sending a one time email about it "just in case" I recently swapped my server around and I'm using dovecot now....LOVE it! Could use a bit more intuitive error messages, but otherwise, it's great! But there is one flaw that I've run into with my users. Case sensitivity. As you all know, Linux is case sensitive and windows is not and mail should always be lower case. I have users who are checking Thisemail(a)domain.tld instead of thisemail(a)domain.tld. This causes my build to create a folder for Thisemail(a)domain.tld to check instead of pulling mail from thisemail(a)domain.tld Either rate, I'm correcting users when I find it, but it doesn't help when I have those that USE ALL CAPS BECAUSE EITHER IT'S COOL OR THEY USE IT FOR OTHER PURPOSES AND DON'T TURN IT OFF. Now I have other problems: - Error message: imap-login: Can't open SSL parameter file ssl-parameters.dat: Permission denied I don´t know if it is because I have another location for ssl-parameters.dat file $ls -la /var/run/dovecot-1.0/login/ssl-parameters.dat -rw------- 1 root dovecot 230 Jul 4 13:41 ssl-parameters.dat - I´m testing dovecot with Thunderbird 1.5.0.4 and when I try to access several folders this error appear: " ... use the Advanced IMAP Server Settings dialog to reduce the number of cache connections." in config file: auth_cache_size = 0 So cache is disable - And last error is when I send a message. I just install RC1 + Plugin cmusieve (cvs), the sieve script is compiled and the sive lib seems OK. But in my log I have sendmail qui with signal 11 when I try to send a mail with "redirect" or "vacation" ? Any possibilitie to use a external SMTP server ? Signal 11 with sendmail is often a memory problem, but the server is in production since more than one month without any problem to sendmail. So Procmail does not write the mailboxes directly any more. So delivery is done through pipes and an external program which can deliver the files. Since dovecot's deliver program can not handle absolute pathes, theses files are handled directly by procmail. See the configuration options below for details. Also INBOX handling needs special handling because this is handled through the /var/spool/mail/$LOGNAME folder which dovecot deliver can not handle. Having some difficulty with this one: I have Postfix setup, with a web interface for postfixadmin. Both Dovecot and Postfix are setup to use the same MySQL database to authenticate users. Only SSL connections are allowed, so I use PLAIN/cleartext as my password type. I have a current working installation of Postfix, Dovecot and MySQL. I want to utilize the Dovecot implementation of SaSL for SMTP-AUTH. Hi all, i got a problem with the umask parameter. I set it to umask=0007 because i need to access mail with another process with different uid, but dovecot seems to ignore the directive for files. I'm using the last 1.0_rc2 release and i'm storing mail in maildir format. Good day, I am having trouble getting dovecot to authenticate using postgresql. For some reason, it fails on a PAM error, although I have specified pgsql as authentication? [Dovecot] subscription to mail folders not working properly anymore with dovecot1.0x ?

Hi we run dovecot on sun solaris 9. I try to switch from dovecot 0.99.11 to dovecot 1.0, with ssl support turned on. The user's mail are stored in mbox format in Mail in their home dirs. I was not able to get the subscrition working properly with the new dovecot. New means: 1.0beta2 and now also 1.0.RC1 (beta9) The client mailreaders are mainly thunderbird 1.0x and 1.5.x, Netscape Messenger, and SquirrelMail for web access. The mail folder subscriptions stored in <usershome>/Mail/.subscriptions works fine with the dovecot 0.99.11. With dovecot_1.0 the subscriptions get properly read, but as soon as the user wants to make any changes to them (for example subscribing to a new folder out of thunderbird), the subscriptions get lost, the file <usershome>/Mail/.subscriptions simply disappears. Did I miss any point in the configuration? Or does someone else encounter the same problem? Hello! Currently I'm trying to integrate dovecot's deliver program into procmail. So basically I'd write a patch for procmail to deliver not directly into the mbox file but delivering with the dovecot deliver program. Do you think this is a good concept? For testing I use the commands discussed below. Today (tonight..) I thought maybe I should see how easy this would be to implement: http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1469343&group_id=1… So basically if enabled it'd add a "Reply-To: dovecot(a)dovecot.org" for the mails you *send* to this list. You can of course already do this yourself, but most clients don't support setting it automatically. I even managed to make it work: http://dovecot.org/tmp/mailman-2.1.8.replytolist.diff But should I actually enable it for Dovecot list? It'll probably break completely once Mailman 2.2/3.0 comes out (when does it come?) and I probably won't bother updating it then. And somehow I feel that the patch won't get accepted to upstream version..

Hello! It seems to me that correct deletion of message in thunderbird still doesn't work with ThanderBird and dovectot 1rc1. As I've said before messages are not removed phisically from filesystem, just marked for deletetion. Though I'm not sure that this is dovecot bug and not ThunderBird. Anyone to clarify this issue ?

Timo, My setup: Solaris 9, 1.0rc1, built like so: CC=gcc CFLAGS="-g -O" CPPFLAGS=-I/opt/openssl/include \ LDFLAGS=-L/opt/openssl/lib ./configure --prefix=/opt/dovecot.1.0rc1 \ --with-ssl=openssl --with-ssldir=/opt/openssl/ssl \ --with-sql-drivers=no --disable-ipv6 using gcc 4.1.0. Protocols are imap and imaps. My system paniced and crashed in the middle of the night, and after it came up the ssl-parameters.dat file was messed up. >From syslog: child 1965 (login) returned error 89 imap-login: Can't open SSL parameter file ssl-parameters.dat: Permission denied Nobody was getting their email via imap. So I removed the directories /opt/dovecot/var and /var/run/dovecot to get dovecot to rebuild the ssl-parameters.dat file. Questions: 1) Why on Earth does ssl-build-param take so long??!! (> 12 minutes on my E220R) What is it doing? How to speed this process up, and/or tune it? 2) Where does ssl-parameters.dat get written to? I found one copy in the /opt/dovecot/var/lib/dovecot directory, and one copy in /var/run/dovecot/login. Which copy gets used? 3) What are the permissions supposed to be for ssl-parameters.dat? The copy in /var/run was chown root:other and chmod 640. I could not get rid of the syslog "permission denied" until I made it chmod 644. 4) Likewise the directories /opt/dovecot/var and below get created chown root:other and chmod 750, with ssl-parameters.dat chmod 640. [Dovecot] writing a plugin for LDA to chain Unix pipes

Hi, I've spent some part of the last week on trying to figure out whether dovecot LDA meets our requirements for a new mail server infrastructure (the IMAP and POP servers, as well as the SASL backend certainly do; thanks a lot!). The one thing that's holding me back is that we need per-user integration of SpamAssassin and some other, custom content filters, all of which are implemented as Unix pipe filters. My conclusion is that since dovecot LDA cannot yet integrate such filters in the delivery chain, but it supports plugins, that such a plugin must be written. Conceptually, it's very simple: a configuration file option specifying the Unix pipe, and a plugin that does the proper popen() (or whatever is to be used these days) call, checking for errors and doing the right thing. Unfortunately, I do not have much time at my hands -- basically it all boils down to Sunday evening and a little bit of Monday, and then it's got to be done. My C is rusty, but I do have a lot of experience with it, so I am confident... ... but what would really help is if someone who knows the internals of Dovecot would give me a starting point, or even some more information. How do I conceive to write such a plugin? I could not find the information online, and I'd rather not reverse engineer existing plugins, for that approach usually leads to ugly and hence unstable/insecure/unusable code. Any feedback is thus warmly appreciated! Also, if someone is online on IRC on Sunday and Monday and wouldn't mind if I asked a question now and then, please let me know. It goes without saying that I will happily submit my plugin (once its tested) to Dovecot upstream under the Artistic Licence, or if that doesn't work, another licence of your choosing. [Dovecot] SSL proxy rewrite

Last time I committed my SSL proxy rewrite people complained that it got broken. Now that I'm finally trying to fix it, it seems to work perfectly with me. Both downloading lots of messages and saving lots of messages works fine. I added SSL alerts and something else to be logged now with verbose_ssl=yes. With that enabled, could you people try if the rewritten code works with you, and if not, what do the logs say? Since I put this installation in an FreeBSD geli encrypted disc image I had no choice but to choose an imapd with clever indexes - dovecot was perfect. However, since I reconfigured the disc image to work as a FreeBSD jail, I had some trouble with my web mail solution. Squirrelmail does not work with imaps (or at least not smoothly, out of the box, or whatever) and I didn't like to hack php to support SSL. Plus: there is no point in using ssl for a local connection. In a FreeBSD jail a sockets source address is always rewritten to the jails address, so squirrelmail opening a connection to dovecot will not come from 127.0.0.1 but from the same (jails) address, dovecot listens to. Still, dovecot only considers 'localhost' addresses as secure and allows LOGIN or PLAIN auth. With the little patch below dovecot allows clients from the jail to authenticate via LOGIN, when they connect from the IP it accepts connections at. Something similar is lurking around in pop3 auth code, I am sure, you get the point. [Dovecot] Just one user experiencing server timeouts

[dovecot-1.0-0.beta2.7 on Fedora Core 5, maildir formatted mail directories, various clients: thunderbird 1.5.0.4 from FC4 and WinXP, SquirrelMail 1.4.6-5.fc5 RPM, various recent versions of Pine from various Fedoras and Redhat 9] I have just one mail user who experiences server timeouts when trying to delete a message (move it to Trash) or other common operations. This user has 4.1GB of mail spread over 200+ Maildir-formatted folders, so I immediately expected sheer volume as the problem - this user has by far the most mail. This user experiences the problem from multiple Thunderbird installs, from SquirrelMail, and from Pine. However, I created a new user account using our standard account creation processes, and did a direct copy of olduser's Maildir to newuser's homedir. Then I did a chown -R newuser ~newuser/Maildir, set up an account in Thunderbird for newuser's account, and tried for an hour to get a server timeout doing all the same operations that cause the timeout on olduser's account, with no timeouts. I absolutely cannot duplicate the behavior, but when I watch olduser do this from any of the above named clients, I see the timeouts on about 10% of the operations. I've been looking into this off and on for weeks, but I am baffled. I can't think of what is so specific about this one user's account that is causing the trip up. Both home directories are stored on the same filesystem and as I mentioned I made an exact duplicate of Maildir. I'm completely out of ideas, does anyone have any thoughts? Does Dovecot do any data tracking on a per user basis that could be confusing it, some cache I can clear? I know this is the fault of Mail.app, whose IMAP support leaves a lot to desire, but I was wondering if there could be some dovecot configuration tricks that make the interaction smoother. I think I've found a bug in Dovecot 1.0 rc1 where if you have namespaces without the "location = " setting defined, it fails to use default_mail_env as it should. Fixed a lot of existing checks which checked for empty strings with NULL instead of "" checks. Looks like Timo missed (at least) one! I'm surprised nobody else has seen this. Hello, how can I configure the IMAP quota plugin to force quotas on inbox only? I would like to limit the size of each of the user's inbox (in /var/mail/%u) to 50 meg and I do not want to force any quotas in their folders (mbox style). They should keep their inbox small :) thanks, Kristian

Since I put this installation in an FreeBSD geli encrypted disc image I had no choice but to choose an imapd with clever indexes - dovecot was perfect. However, since I reconfigured the disc image to work as a FreeBSD jail, I had some trouble with my web mail solution. Squirrelmail does not work with imaps (or at least not smoothly, out of the box, or whatever) and I didn't like to hack php to support SSL. Plus: there is no point in using ssl for a local connection. In a FreeBSD jail a sockets source address is always rewritten to the jails address, so squirrelmail opening a connection to dovecot will not come from 127.0.0.1 but from the same (jails) address, dovecot listens to. Still, dovecot only considers 'localhost' addresses as secure and allows LOGIN or PLAIN auth. With the little patch below dovecot allows clients from the jail to authenticate via LOGIN, when they connect from the IP it accepts connections at. Something similar is lurking around in pop3 auth code, I am sure, you get the point. [Dovecot] How to use filters with the LDA?

Hi, I am trying to deploy dovecot LDA and liking it so far. However, I need to pass the message through some filters before it's delivered to the user (e.g. spamc). I realise I can just set up a chain (postfix delivers to spamc, pipes to foo, pipes to bar, pipes to deliver), but there's no reliable error handling with that approach. Furthermore, I cannot seem to figure out whether sieve can pass messages through external filters, or how you'd do that. How do people approach this? What would be really sweet is an LDA plugin that can call arbitrary filters for each message it processes. Has something (obvious) like this been done? I'm seeking a small IMAP server, and dovecat was recommended by those more savvy than me. (The sign on my monitor is "My programming language is solder..") so I'll be getting help to deploy this, but first... I've read through the wiki docs but still have questions, ones likely too obvious for most readers.... There will be <100 users, the platform will Debian, and I need IMAP/PO over SSL/TSL and locally-hosted Squirrelmail [unless someone has a better webmail client...]. Other boxes here run postfix, so that is a first choice. Clients will be Eudora, maybe TBird/Apple mail; no M$ Outlook. A) I need multi-domain support, with <joe(a)xyz.com> and <joy(a)qbc.net> being separate users. B) I have a problem with storage-abusers & really want the carrot-stick quota system my favorite ISP, Panix, has. You get N bytes {or messages, I can live with either/both} and when you get near, you get nagged until you solve it. When you exceed quota, you get no more incoming mail, just nagging. It's shunted aside until you make room. After D days, if it's still there, the shunted mail is returned. Regular reports as to who's naughty and nice would be great. C) Password changes. How can I have user-changable pw's, with crack/sanity checking of the new ones? Do I have to have accessible shell accounts on the box for each user? [argh] D) Spam: assume I can run spam-assassin and have it move suspected mail into a Junque mailbox; true? E) Non-guru creation/deletion of accounts: It appears from "Virtual Users" that this is possible via a text file, but I'm not sure... Comments?

Hello, some time ago there was dicussion on the list about development of a managesieve daemon to allow users to manage their own scripts. After putting the pieces togheter and having sieve working in the lda with Dovecot I solved the management issue by using Horde's Ingo + FTP to manage scripts for virtual users. This is quite ugly (technically speaking) but works and it is integrated with my webmail system (which is quite nice). Is anyone actively working on this? Which client do support managesieve? Luca

Hello All, Upgraded a test machine this morning from beta9 to rc1 and lost access to messages and folders. an strace on the imap process shows it accessing the home directory, but not the mail directory. The two queries that I use are: password_query = SELECT email,crypt as password FROM users WHERE email = '%u' user_query = SELECT homedir AS home, maildir AS mail, 1000 AS uid, 1000 AS gid FROM users WHERE email = '%u' In this example, homedir=/var/spool/mail/filer/storage and maildir=cfu.net/b/r/breu Under beta9, it finds the homedir/maildir correctly as /var/spool/mail/filer/storage/cfu.net/b/r/breu. The virtual address range reserved for a file range is determined at the time of the initial mapping of the file range into a process address space. Hi, I am using the Debian dovecot packages and the deliver LDA from postfix, all version 1.0.beta8. My problem is with quota support, I am using Maildirs. The relevant configuration stuff is included at the bottom of this email. Quota support seems to work with IMAP. However, even when IMAP complains about an account being over quota, the deliver LDA still happily writes new mail to the (correct) Maildirs. I cannot see any warnings or other hints. Can you spot what I am doing wrong? Are both used simultaneously ? Dovecot will soon have a plugin which allows running a nightly cronjob to expunge mails from configured mailboxes which have been in there for a configurable amount of time. For example the configuration could be: plugin { # Trash 7d, Spam 30d expire = Trash 7 Spam 30 } It also supports using Dovecot's lib-dict to keep track of the mailboxes and their oldest mail's timestamp, so that the nightly cronjob can quickly go through only those mailboxes that have those old mails. Berkeley DB support has been added to lib-dict for this purpose, but you could use SQL as well. There's however one problem with it that I could use opinions on. Currently there's no way to know how long a mail has been in a mailbox. There are pretty much 3 ways to handle this: 1) When copying to those Trash/Spam mailboxes the message's INTERNALDATE could be replaced with the current time. That way the INTERNALDATE tells how long the message has been in there. The obvious downside of this is that if the user wants to move the message back to another mailbox, the original INTERNALDATE is lost (INTERNALDATE means the time when the message was received and is often the timestamp used to sort messages). 2) Preserve the INTERNALDATE while copying, but still use it anyway. Often the messages are moved to Trash (and especially to Spam) soon after they have been received. If not, then the user has time until the next nightly cronjob to move the messages back before they're lost. 3) Add a new field to index file which contains the date when the message was copied. This could be done only for those Trash/Spam boxes so they don't waste space for other mailboxes. The problem with this is that it won't work if there are no index files. To overcome that problem the time could be stored in yet another place, such as maildir filename and some new mbox header. I don't see supporting those as worth the trouble though, so the fallback could be either the date index file is created or the messages' INTERNALDATE. I think either 1) or 3) would be best solutions. 3) probably, but if index files don't exist nearly permanently, it's not very reliable..

[Dovecot] Postfix "userlookup" via Dovecot Auth

I'm hoping to take advantage of authentication caching via dovecot-auth. I see that posfix can communicate with Dovecot-Auth, via SASL, but from what I can see, postfix only does this for authentication checks. Not 100% sure how postfix handles virtual_transport (I assume it needs to do a lookup via virtual_mailbox_maps), but I can't see anyway to get virtual_mailbox_maps to use dovecot-auth ether. I guess I may just have to get the virtual_mailbox_maps to look up userdata via SQL as well as Dovecot, but I was hoping to avoid what will be 3 similar lookups one after the other (dovecot-lda is in use as well). My intended setup is "Postfix" -- LMTP --> "Dspam" -- DeliveryAgent --> "Dovecot-LDA", with each stage currently doing a SQL lookup for user information. It would be awesome if they all used SASl via Dovecot-Auth so that the Auth cache does it's job! Reading the doc files in Dspam is confusing me, as the relay file seems to be mixed up. I am thinking along the lines of the automatic removal of old messages from say, the Trash folder. Hi all, I'm running Dovecot 1.0 beta8 on CentOS 4.3. In the "protocol imap { }" section, I have enabled the following 2 plugins: imap_quota quota In the "plugin { }" section, I have configured the following: quota = maildir imap_quota = maildir This all works well, and if I use IMAP, Dovecot correctly updates the maildirsize file in user Maildirs. However, I need quota to work for POP3 as well. If I enable the quota plugin in the "protocol pop3 { }" section, I get the following error in the log: dlopen(/usr/lib/dovecot/pop3/lib01_quota_plugin.so) failed: /usr/lib/dovecot/pop3/lib01_quota_plugin.so: undefined symbol: mountpoint_get Along with this error, POP3 logins are not possible. The error is that you have glibc-2.4 which triggers inotify support in dovecot on linux boxes (in the Gentoo ebuild). However, glibc-2.4 needs to be compiled against linux-headers-2.6.13 or later as they provide the linux/inotify.h header which glibc needs. I've spoken to our toolchain guys and they don't want to remove glibc's inotify.h so they keep their ABI which makes perfect sense to them. So I've hacked up a patch to dovecots configure.in that only enables inotify if it really works :) It also tests for inotify, then kqueue, then dnotify if no notify method is specified. Seems to work well. If upstream (Timo) accepts it then I'll roll it into beta9's ebuild ASAP A better solution would be to have something in the code though as if the kernel suddenly drops to <2.6.13 then you'll get the same errors. In the meantime, I've forced the beta9 ebuild to only use inotify if >=glibc-2.4 and >=linux-headers-2.6.16 are present, and I hope glibc has been compiled against them - lol. [Dovecot] pop-3 login delay

We are running Dovecot 1.0.beta9 w/ mysql authentication. Mail storage is a Network Appliance F810 filer and we are using maildir. The only issue that we have run into is that pop3 logins take much longer than imap logins within dovecott and many times longer than a similar connection with courier-imap. For example, dovecot IMAP and courier-imap POP3 and IMAP logins take less than 1/2 second to complete the login. dovecot POP3 takes 2-3 seconds. I have disabled MMAP and am using fcntl. I've done several fixes since my original RC1 status mail. Most importantly I noticed that SEARCH command has been somewhat broken for a long time if the search condition contained OR or NOT conditions. Then again fixing that caused Dovecot to assert-crash for some searches. That should be fixed now. Hopefully I didn't break the SEARCH in other ways while doing this.. So, again, please test the latest CVS or the latest nightly snapshot from http://dovecot.org/nightly/ Especially I'm interested in: - Does SEARCH work correctly? - Does ioloop checks now work properly? There were mails about it being broken with kqueue and epoll. - Does mboxes with CR+LF linefeeds work correctly? I'm hoping to release the 1.0 RC1 late in sunday or in monday morning (EEST). Then a status update of my life in case you're interested: I got in pretty much everywhere I applied for: CS and biotech in Helsinki university and biotech in Tampere university. For Helsinki's biochem I'm the first in the waiting list, which means I almost certainly would get in there too. So, unless something suddenly changes my mind, I'm moving to Tampere in two months. [Dovecot] Asterisks (*) in Folder Names disallowed?

As far as I can see the RFC for IMAP should allow the * character in the folder name. This is certainly allowed in UW IMAP. Dovecot seems to object however with: ERROR : Could not complete request. Query: COPY 9975:9975 "mail/*myfolder" Reason Given: Invalid mailbox name. Could this restriction be lifted? Best wishes, Daniel

Hi, I'm trying to compile dovecot with dovecot-sieve, both from CVS. There is file dovecot-config.in.in in current dovecot module, which produce dovecot-config.in after ./configure'ing. But dovecot-sieve requires file dovecot-config to be in dovecot's directory. I think it is just typo, because after renaming dovecot-config.in to dovecot-config the building succeeded. -- Sergey Ivanov

Hi, After using dovecot 0.99.14 on a production server with full satisfaction, I'm now giving a try to 1.0beta8 (I know beta9 is out, but it's not yet available within Debian). The new features are great. Maildir++ quotas seem to work fine, and shared folders look promising (despite a few issues). My problem is that I could not fire out how to set quotas on shared folders. This patchset add support for One-Time-Password authentication mechanisms, both S/Key (RFC 1731) and OTP (RFC 2444) are implemented. Tested with mutt (uses cyrus sasl library for authentication). Hello! I have very strange problem with dovecot and thunderbird while deleting messages. The problem is that they are not actually deleted from storage filesystem and if I later run mutt I can perfectly see them, though marked with 'D', so mutt ask to delete them on exit and this time they dissapear from filesystem. I enabled in thunderbird 'remove it iimediately' feature, but this doesn't help. When I delete message from mutt it removed from filesystem just fine. IMAP server: OS: FreeBSD 6.1p2 dovecot: dovecot-1.0.b9 Client: OS: Debian sarge Thunderbird: thunderbird 1.5.0.4 (from backports.org) Any suggestions ?

When I do a search in squirrelmail, it will start giving several results, but then fails. Hi guys, I've run into a strange problem using beta 8 and beta 9 when using the latest version of Horde/IMP Through IMP, I can see that there are messages in the maildir on the sidemenu(popup menu) but the emails don't show in my actual inbox. I thought this was an IMP problem, but then I downgraded to dovecot 99 series RPM and this resolved the problem. I was seeing the following error in my logs, when I tried to log into a mailbox through IMP. Hello, I recently converted my 300+ email user system over to Dovecot. It is working fantastically, except for UID sync errors. I read everything I could find and only saw others with those problems in version 0.99 below. My log shows errors like this all day long for pretty much all users: dovecot: Jun 25 19:12:46 Error: POP3(nmichel): Maildir /home/rtb/users/nmichel/.Maildir sync: UID < next_uid (42 < 43, file = msg.oP8c:2,) dovecot: Jun 25 19:25:59 Error: IMAP(lcrowe): Maildir /home/dentist/users/lcrowe/.Maildir sync: UID inserted in the middle of mailbox (70 > 4, file = msg.AM81:2,) When this happens, IMAP and POP3 drop the connections sending errors to their clients. I use squirrelmail over IMAP and some new emails never appear until I delete the index files. I have tried deleting indexes, and the problem continued. I went from dovecot-1.0.beta3 to dovecot-1.0.beta9 and still happens. The only way it doesn't happen is when I append the INDEX=MEMORY trick as in: default_mail_env = maildir:~/.Maildir:INDEX=MEMORY but then it's all so slow for large mailboxes, it's painful. Here are some of my specs: Linux kernel 2.6.15 Maildir Auth from /etc/shadow Users from /etc/passwd Does anyone have any hints on where I should start? Thanks in advance. I love Dovecot.
