Heh heh heh. Whoops. I've spent a few hours digging around in the source and nearly posted a kludge of a patch I'd written to give a kind of half-baked attempt at getting group-usable subscriptions files. Then I came across something in the source........ In the config file, do something like the following: namespace public { separator = / prefix = Public/ location = maildir:/home/public/Maildir:CONTROL=%h/Maildir/Public inbox = no hidden = no } Notice the "CONTROL=" part of the location line. This tells dovecot where to store "control" files (of which the "subscriptions" file is one). As you can see I have told it to put the control files in each user's home space. This means not only are there going to be no permission problems, but each user can have separate subscriptions (because everyone is using their own "subscriptions" file). Of course I could also have set the CONTROL dir to be something like "/home/public/Maildir/control/%u" so they would all be stored in one place, but I prefer the idea of having it in the user's home folder. After searching the wiki I don't see the CONTROL option explained anywhere. Is there any chance someone could add that in somehow (a link from the SharedFolders page would be extremely useful also). I'm having trouble getting dovecot lda to work. I'm using dovecot b3, and a dovecot lda cvs checkout, according to http://wiki.dovecot.org/LDA I tr to use the .forward method: |"/usr/local/libexec/dovecot/deliver" I also tried this line: "|/usr/local/libexec/dovecot/deliver -c /etc/dovecot.conf -d joakim" I get this error in maillog: stat=unknown mailer error 80 I tried running deliver from commandline, and it manages to add lines to my inbox then. -- Joakim Verona www.verona.se

[Dovecot] Save sent mail on server

Hi dovecot list users, currently we have some email accounts which get maintained by different people. If any of this users sends a mail, it is only saved on his local machine, but not on the imap server. But i'll need them to get saved on the mail server for backup purposes and that every user can see which mails have been sent through this account. Is this possible? [Dovecot] mail shown throught outlook, shows todays date

Hi all I seem to be sitting with an interesting situation where by I need to copy mail from Exchange to dovecot (Maildir) I used a mixture of solution (Moz Thunderbird, fetchmail and outlook) to copy and test the mail. The interesting thing is, once I have some mail on the dovecot, the date displayed on Mozilla is correct, but the mail shown throught outlook, shows todays date (thats for all mail). I logged in squirrel mail, that too correctly displays the date. Almost seems as Outlook (office 2000) looks at the date / time stamp of the file it self as opposed to opening and reading the mail and reading the necassry tags. If anyone could help me understand this (is this a dovecot issue), I would really appreciate it. Kind Regards Brent Clark

[Dovecot] Tiny kqueue specific patch

Hi, I have noticed from logs that (only handful of occurrences during whole week) sometimes there is some kind of unrecognized event on handle and the branch with i_panic() in ioloop-kqueue.c:io_loop_handler_run() catches it. This patch allows the i_panic() to print some more info about the nature of the unrecognized event so that I can find out what it is about. Since it is really rare event I ask anybody who sees Dovecot dying with "Unrecognized event" in logs to try this patch and report back with the output if it triggers again. The patch is against version 1.beta3. [Dovecot] One dovecot, multiple domains

Hey guys, I've got dovecot configured to work perfectly for virtual users across different domains. It's great. My problem is that, as far as I can tell, dovecot makes me use one SSL certificate across all my domains. That's not what I want. Is there a way I can get dovecot to use the cert for mail.foo.com when somebody is logging into a foo.com account, and the cert for mail.bar.com when somebody is logging into a bar.com account? Am I missing something obvious, or asking the impoosible?

[Dovecot] Using mbox INBOX with Maildirs?

Thanks for everybody's tips on the mbox to maildirs converter. I was unaware that Maildirs was a common format not specific to dovecot, so I was searching using a dovecot keyword. I'm having this problem now with inboxes. I want to use maildirs, but my mail is delivered to an mbox. I can't seem to get dovecot to recognize the inbox location. Is something like: maildir:%h/Maildir:INBOX=/var/mail/%u impossible to use? What I'm trying to do is slowly merge people from mboxes to maildirs, so I have to use the passwd file per user maildirs settings with some sort of recognizeable inbox. Well, I've tried playing with the umask setting (thanks for the suggestion Channing) and changing the index locations (thanks Curtis), but no joy. Using: default_mail_env = mbox:~/mail:INBOX=/var/mail/%u:INDEX=/var/indexes/%u I have a ~/mail/.subscriptions file (copied from .mailboxlist) Using: telnet localhost 143 a04 LSUB "" "*" => works fine, gives the list of subscribed folders a05 LIST "" * => works fine, gives the list of all folders a06 SUBSCRIBE "test" => deletes the ~/mail/.subscriptions file, it never gets recreated and LSUB gives an empty list after that. [Dovecot] SquirrelMail 1.4.6 and Dovecot 1.0.beta3 Folders

I migrated from UW IMAP, copied ~/.mailboxlist to ~/mail/.subscritions When I access SquirrelMail, is sees the folders on the left side. If I modifiy my folder subscription, they dissappear all but INBOX, and the .subscriptions file gets deleted. What am I missing. Thanks Bertrand Leboeuf

hello johannes, i just discovered your wonderful plugin for dovecot. it was pretty much exactly what i was looking for, only that i didn't know that yet :) "Instead of moving mail into special folders, the user has two actions available: moving it out of the SPAM folder and moving it into the SPAM folder. The dovecot plugin watches these actions [...] and tells dspam that it made an error and needs to re-classify the message, depending on the action the user took. The user can now move the message directly into whatever folder she choses, and it all works. [Dovecot] [patch] support tpop3d-style UIDLs

Hello, I've attached a patch that adds an additional expando to pop3_uidl_format. The additional expando (%M) expands to the md5sum of the filename (which is already available via %f.) This UIDL style is compatible with tpop3d when using Maildir. The patch is against dovecot 1.0 beta3, and I'd love to see it be merged into the official tree. I would like to have the ability to execute a command on a folder based on a user doing something like copying a message to that folder. This could be accomplished with a config file directive. For example, this would be EXTREMEMLY useful as a spam learning hook. Take a scenario where each user has their own spamassassin bayes database, and you want to give the users the ability to train their own database based on what they think is SPAM. It would be nice to give all the users a folder called Spam, and tell them to just copy/move mail into that folder, and spamassassin will automatically learn about it. If we had a configuration hook where you could execute on a copy/move, then I could tell Dovecot whenever a user puts a message into the Spam folder, execute 'sa-learn --spam --file %s' on that message. Sure we could just do an external script in a cron job to do it every hour or something, which I'll probably do in the mean time, but often users will just delete messsages after they copy into it. Doing it through IMAP means spamassassin will learn about it immediately. How cool would that be? It seems like an easy hook to implement. I would like to patch it myself for my own use, but I'm not very proficient in C. I saw someone on the net patched Courier to do the same thing so I know I'm not alone in wanting this. Anyone know how I could patch it? Can we add that to the feature request list? ~Adam

I am moving a courier installation over to Dovecot and I am wondering if there is a way to set Dovecot to automatically move purged items to trash (under IMAP). Additionally, is there a way to automatically delete old items from a Trash folder? -David

My mistake, good point. I thought that creating the indexes would take a long time, but after a couple of tests, I found that Dovecot is so fast that it beats UW IMAP even while creating the indexes and after that, it is just fast. Hello all, I've installed and setup the LDA with postfix. I'm trying out Sieve support, and wrote the following global script: require "fileinto"; if address :contains "To" "luca(a)mydomain.tld" { fileinto "Spam"; } and tried to send an email to that address. The sieve script seems to be processed and sieve-global.scriptc is compiled, but the message is not filed in the correct folder. [Dovecot] PAM authentification problem

Hi everybody, we try to migrate our IMAP service from uw-imap to dovecot because of horrible server slowdown when a lot of people poking in theirs huge imap folders. So, I try to run testing instance of dovecot on different imap port (12143) I have trouble with authentication by PAM module of MIT Kerberos. It successfuly works for authentificate users of wu-imap but not for dovecot. Hello, I have a FC4 x64 server that I am configuring/testing. It had dovecot 0.99 loaded after I did a yum update. That worked great with mbox, the passwd file, and test users in /home/users/username. I would like to be able to authenticate virtual users by 'username(a)domain.com' and have them be able to use squirrelmail or Outlook/Outlook Express to access their email. Users have no reason to have a login (shell) account on this machine. I also would like to use the maildir format for performance. I also have hundreds of users currently on a RH9 mail server using qpopper in mbox format, hashed mail spool. Questions: 1)Is a mysql database the best way to support "user(a)domain.com" email users? (they don't have any reason for a shell account on this machine) 2)What version of dovecot should I be using? I prefer RPMs and at http://www.dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2006-February/011467.html I found http://fedora.ivazquez.net/yum/4/x86_64/RPMS.alternatives/dovecot-1.0-0.iva… I installed this and then configured procmail for maildir delivery. I configured dovecot-sql.conf for mysql driver...but the mysql driver does not appear to be compiled in this rpm. 3)Anyone have any general tips on how to configure such a beast? Thanks, Curt

[Dovecot] virtual users

Hello All. I've been reading the virtual user howto but cant get the login working. dovecot.conf is below [0] if anyone can offer some pointers. I'm confused about the format of /etc/imap.passwd [1] also. Does the "pass" word in the example need to be plaintext, or the MD5 string from do. Also, what is the significance of "{plain}"? If there are docs I've missed, please RTFM with a link. It's my server and it's still running and working properly. Dovecot version is (as on the newer server) beta3, but the first Dovecot running was beta2 I think. Imap works properly on that server. Anyway Dovecot shouldn't crash ever if the index files are broken!

[Dovecot] Shared Folders Problem. Bug?

I'm trying to get shared folders to work, and I've noticed a few issues. I created a private and public namespace, the private one with autodetection for Maildir or Mbox, and the public one for a public folder. Something like this: namespace private { separator = / inbox = yes prefix = location = } namespace public { separator = / prefix = Public/ location = maildir:/var/mail/public } My plan is to eventually setup a public area for users to drop Spam and Ham into for my spam bayesan filter. The problem is the Wiki says if you drop a file in the public area called 'dovecot-shared' with the same permissions and ownership, that any new files dovecot creates there will use those same attributes. This does not seem to be the case. I created a Maildir folder identical to the one on the Wiki, named everything 'dovecot:dovecot' since my dovecot server will be running as that user, as well as the 'dovecot-shared' file. I get permission denied errors in syslog when I try to access it via an IMAP client. The only way I can make it work is ignore the dovecot-share file and put all users in a common unix group and make the Public folder group 'rwx'. Also, I would like to be able to make the Public folder writable, but not readable. It seems if I take the read bit away, my IMAP clients complain. Does anyone know how to make that work? One thing about the namespaces while I'm at it. I had to put my private namespace first followed by the public one. If I reversed them, all the subfolders except the inbox in my mail directories disappear from the client. Is that a bug too? Thanks, Adam

[Dovecot] Problems with Oulook Clients

Hello all. I have problems with clients running Outlook 2003 that keep getting IMAP server timeout errors, "mailbox in an inconsistant state" Are there any mods to be made to the config file that could eliminate this? It happens about ever 10minutes. Here is what our previous Sys Admin sent me on our setup. dovecot is the IMAP server that allows clients to connect and get to their mailboxes. Postfix is that part of the mail system that moves messages around, from one server to another and puts them in the appropriate mailboxes. Thanks Patrick

With a INBOX mbox created by UW IMAP the messages in INBOX mbox contains the X-UIDL field When I use Dovecot POP3 with pop3_uidl_format = %08Xv%08Xu on the first run, X-UID is inserted, but all messages are downloaded again. The imap process crashes when SquirrelMail wants to move a message to another folder. I have run imap in gdb and talked to it the same way SquirrelMail does and got a backtrace. I am using Dovecot beta3. I am using it in combination with XMail, which has maildir databases. My system is Gentoo Linux on x86. [Dovecot] Strange dovecot-uidlist behavior on maildir conversion

Hi. So I just moved my email over from mbox to maildir. For the most part the conversion went fine, but I had a bit of an odd thing happen when I accessed my mail through dovecot. It seems that when I ran mb2md to convert my mailboxes from mbox to maildir, I got a lot of messages created that look like 1142356176.000000.mbox:2,RS 1142356176.000421.mbox:2,S 1142356176.000001.mbox:2,S 1142356176.000422.mbox:2,RS 1142356176.000002.mbox:2,RS 1142356176.000423.mbox:2,S 1142356176.000003.mbox:2,RS 1142356176.000424.mbox:2,S and so forth. Now, that really should be fine, that I can tell; each message has the same timestamp and a different, sequential delivery identifier. However, for some reason when dovecot accessed this directory, it created UIDs for these messages like so: (from dovecot-uidlist) 1 1142362834 915 1 1142356176.000488.mbox 2 1142356176.000207.mbox 3 1142356176.000425.mbox 4 1142356176.000117.mbox 5 1142356176.000398.mbox 6 1142356176.000335.mbox I have no idea where this order came from, but it's clearly not the order that I would have expected. I would expect that dovecot would sort these messages by timestamp, followed by delivery identifier. Instead, it put them in a seemingly random order. And, of course, my email client by default shows messages in the order that it gets them from the server, so now when I look at my email all of my old messages are shuffled until I do an explicit sort by date. Any idea why this is happening? Is there some reasoning behind this, or is it just a bug? I looked through the archives a bit, but didn't find a mention of anyone else with this particular problem. I suppose I could just create the initial uid lists by hand and put them in the correct order, but that really doesn't seem like the correct solution. Or I could actually dig through the source and find out exactly what it's doing, but, well, I figure that asking the list first is easier. For reference, I'm running dovecot 0.99.14-1 on debian sarge. I though that I was doing a good job by reproducing this on the newer version my ubuntu desktop, but it turns out that it's running the same version. :) -allen

I'm trying to setup a rootless configuration so I can better manage the e-mail that comes to the mailbox of a unix account I have. I've successfully compiled Dovecot and followed the instructions for a rootless configuration, tweaking my config until Dovecot returns no errors. However I've got to a stage where upon running ~/..../sbin/dovecot it just quits with no server running and no errors. Any ideas? Hi, I'm a happy user of dovecot since the 0.99.x days, and recently switched my user base to 1.0b2. Now, to the point, I got a request (from marketing) to share a lot of maildirs between two (and possibly more) accounts. Those two accounts have differents uid/gid. The maildirs are actually in one of the account. Hi list, first of all, many thanks to the Dovecot authors for supplying an IMAP server that works well with M$-Outlook! I have used UW-imapd for quite a while and was annoyed by frequent "imap...timeout..." error messages. Now I'd like to give maildir format a try because I want to use email sub-folders. What are other Outlook users' experiences with maildir? Is it as stable as mbox? Regards Gerhard

is it possible to turn off TLS and only SSL ? The reason are many reasons for this, one major being the fact that TLS is automatically discovered by many clients on the standard ports, thus requiring a valid cert for production use, while SSL could be set up on some unknown to anybody port with self signed cert for testing, etc... thank you

Hello, we have problems to access our users mailboxes with SquirrelMail. The log file /var/log/mail.log says permission denied, only one user is allowed to read his mail with SquirrelMail. We are running Debian Sarge, Mailserver is Postfix, imap server is dovecot. Our Mailboxes are stored in the mbox format. Folder of the mbox files is /var/mail/ the users are unix system accounts. Normally we read are mail with the POP-Client Outlook, this works well. But we also want to be able to read our mail (each user his own mails) via SquirrelMail /var/log/mail.log says: Mar 13 10:54:40 webserver dovecot: imap(unix-system-account): mkdir_parents(/var/mail/.imap/INBOX) failed: Permission denied In the folder where the mbox files are stored exists 3 folders called INBOX.drafts INBOX.sent INBOX.trash These folders are owned by the user who is able to read his mail via SquirrelMail and owned by the group mail. Only the user has read and write permissions. Does each user need to have his own INBOX Files? Could you please help me Kind regards, Roland

Having some issues with having the deliver lda deliver properly. So, I'd like to have a configuration which by default restricts reading emails to company's own ip-address range. So far, this could be achieved by a basic firewall rule, but not any more the following: However, there is need for a few users to access their emails from world-wide internet, so there should be a possibility to define for certain users an option to skip the allowed address range check. Hi, I'm attaching a suggested patch that lets an authenticated user access shared IMAP folders even if the user doesn't directly own the storage, but is a part of a group that has permissions on the storage. This allows for the administrator to setup a shared mailbox with permissions given to a group instead of a user, and allow all of the users that belong to the group to access the mail according to the file-system permissions. What do you think? Is this the right way to do this, or am I missing something security-wise? I'm also attaching a bug fix for the LDAP passdb, where if the password scheme wasn't PLAIN, the password would be cleared from memory before being used to authenticate the user, and the authentication would fail. [Dovecot] Segfault problem when using TWO dovecot servers!

Forgive me if this gets submitted twice. I had issues signing up for the listserv but I think I'm strait now. Hi all, I just started working with Dovecot and I'd like to use it for my organization, but I've run into a little problem. So far I love it and it does what I need. One thing we need is to be able to write to multiple mailbox formats on a per user basis (mbox or Maildir), and it does just that. I want users to be able to choose their format, and I can let it autodetect for me. The way I do that is I have Maildrop filters check for the presence of a ~Maildir, and if it finds that it writes to it, otherwise it writes to ~mbox. Dovecot is the only IMAP server I've found to read either or without hard coding one or the other in the config file. The problem: We also want failover. Mail/home directories are NFS mounted. I was planning to setup two dovecot servers, and noticed that whenever one server writes its temp files to the mail directory, if another server tries to read it you get a segfault and the child process fails and dies. So it basically looks like only one server can own the files, and it won't share. I considered trying to set the INDEX option on the mail boxes to write local indexes, but if I try to specify something like: default_mail_env = INDEX=/var/indexes/%d/%n, it doesn't work. Sure I can make it work by putting in a mailbox format before the INDEX, but then I can't use the autodetect which I need. Here's the syslog error: kernel: imap[13689]: segfault at 00007fffffe38000 rip 00002aaaaad3823f rsp 00007fffffe351f0 error 4 Any solutions? I really need this to work badly, or we may have to rethink our entire mail strategy. I'm also using the latest version 1.0beta3. I considered namespaces, but correct me if I'm wrong, you can't setup two namespaces and have it pick the first mailbox format available like the autodetect feature does. I tried seting up namespaces for both mbox and Maildir, but it just creates both. Please help someone. It would be very useful for keep-messages-on-server setups (yes, I know, IMAP4 domain) to be able to do UIDL 21-42 to obtain just these 22 UIDs (this would always have to be a multi-line reply, just like UIDL without argument). Hi, I have yet another problem. First let me explain my setup. I used to use pine a lot so there are mbox mailboxes in ~/mail. Recently I added a Maildir too and moved most of the mbox mailboxes into Maildir format. Now I thoght it would be nice to have them all "in line" in Thunderbird so I tried this configuration: namespace private { separator = / prefix = location = %h/mbox inbox = yes } namespace private { separator = / prefix = location = maildir:%h/Maildir } The problem is that with this configuration I cannot access the ~/mail/box mailboxes. Hello all I am new to dovecot and I have some troubles to make it working on a FreeBSD 6.0 box On this machine I have nss_ldap + pam_ldap working to login users but dovecot is not working for "ldap" users, it works only for users that are "really" in /etc/passwd file. Hello, I recently setup a Fedora FC4 server to host e-mail and webapps. During the install, I turned on SELinux in active mode. All apps seems to work OK but Dovecot daemon won't start. My question for the list is what changes should I make to the SELinux policy to safely permit dovecot to read the file? I'm no expert at SELinux but hoping for some direction, or another way to solve this problem. Ideally, I'd like to keep SELinux in enforcing mode. Many thanks, Eric

[Dovecot] MySQL problem when using Dovecot as proxy

Hi, I have just installed Dovecot as a POP3 proxy with great success. Its works flawlessly when i keep to the standard but since I am proxying a Microsoft Exchange 2003 (because the build-in POP3 in MS sux bigtime) I would very much like to use account names like: DOMAIN\username and this doesn't work when I include that in the MySQL table. In the logfile it clearly writes DOMAIN\username so its some kind of translation between dovecot and MYSQL. Any suggestions. I another solution would be to allow all users instead of having to create them in the MySQL table. Is this possible ? /Christian P.S Before Dovecot some Outlook users could only download max. 250kB through POP3 - now with Dovecot there is NO LIMIT! :)

[Dovecot] :INDEX and :CONTROL in 0.99.14

Before anyone say "upgrade" for various reasons I can't right now (and at any rate everything else works well with this version). My problem is that I can't get :INDEX and :CONTROL working at all: default_mail_env = maildir:~/:INDEX=/home/dovecot/index/%d/% n:CONTROL=/home/dovecot/control/%d/%n ls -l /home/dovecot/ total 8 drwxrwxrwx 3 dovecot dovecot 4096 Mar 8 07:52 control drwxrwxrwx 3 dovecot dovecot 4096 Mar 8 07:55 index (I've made everything 777 for testing) The error I get is: Mar 8 09:54:26 host imap(user(a)domain.com): mkdir (/home/dovecot/index/domain.com/user/.INBOX) failed: Permission denied If I su to the user(a)domain.com user I can manually create the directory OK. <permit me my perhaps foolish preference...an explanation> I run mail service for a small college. I've long joked that if someone stole the mail server, the phone would ring before the alarm (which has a 1 minute delay) did, that the user base expected 25x8x367 coverage. Making updates/upgrades to the mail server feels like a tightrope walk with no net. I always appreciated UofWIMAP because there is one binary. Doing and upgrade or backing it out is simplicity itself. I could compile the single binary on my compile machine, test the same binary on my testbed, and then drop it in my production machine and it would work with a minimum of surprises. So portable, so predictable, no security risk of a compiler on a production machine. Of course, /most/ of open source software has all these bits and pieces scattered everywhere. Oh, it may install initially just dandy, but come the day when It's Time For The Upgrade.... 1) can I do it quick and clean and 2) can I recover to what I had before quickly and correctly if the upgrade flops?????? Alas, Dovecot is sprinkled in many, many pieces...but at least, I think (right?) that they are all in the prefix-dir. Gulp. So. I am hoping I can do this: Build/Test Install 1) build/install in /usr/local/dovecot_bld/ Build### in the expectation that everything will be stuck down there. I don't want to put it into /usr/local/ because it will be in there with everything else....no way to get just the dovecot stuff.. 2) tar up the contents of my prefix directory and extract it over on my testbed under /usr/local/dovecot. Notice that the path to dovecot's "stuff" has changed from /usr/local/dovecot_bld/ Build### to /usr/local/dovecot I'm hoping that this won't be a problem. I will point the line in inetd at it and Everything Will Work. 3) Assuming I don't change anything and everything tests out (flawlessly!), I............. Introduction to Production (assuming that all the mailboxes, homedirs and the like have been sorted out) 1) make a tarball of the current working dovecot executables dir (/usr/local/dovecot) 2) extract the tarball there as before on the testbed machine and everything is fine. 2) if the update flops, I can bring back the tarball of the previous Dovecot incarnation My Questions: A) Will this work or are there dependencies I'm not aware of? B) Is there Some Better Way or..... I have this ongoing <ahem> discussion with the Open Source wonks that delight in many, many modules, libraries, etc. I /know/ the reasons a developer would want to do things that way, but, for those of use fielding the application, it's /so/ much easier and success/failure recovery is /so/ much more likely if....there are only one or two or three chunks that we can drop in or quickly back out. I realize that the developer is coding in large part for the utter joy of creating a wondrous, living, breathing edifice of code, that works, that works cleanly, that works as none has before. Yes. But I would think (IMHO) that the developer would receive a greater portion of the ego rush (also a big part of the developer stimulus) of overwhelming application acceptance (and thunderous applause), if he or she made it easy to support and upgrade! You see a sysadmin is so often an utter coward (I confess), who doesn't like unpleasant surprises, whose managment Really Doesn't Like Unpleasant Surprises. In case you're wondering why I haven't answered your mail. I try to do as much reading to exams as possible, and as little as possible anything else.. They're over in 2,5 weeks, so I'll start reading the old emails again then. :) BTW. If someone wants to help a bit, outlook-idle workaround seems to be broken. The timeout function never gets called in cmd-idle.c. I'm guessing it broke after I added the other timeout function for printing "OK Still here" message every 2 minutes, so the bug is probably in timeout handling in ioloop.c.

Brand spanking new to Dovecot. Trying to move over to it, got a few simple questions. 1) Is there any documentation on the .customflags file? Not sure what this is for... 2) I'd like to make a directory for every user NOT be writable. Meaning the email server (Exim) can put the mail down in the directory but a user can no move an email into it through Imap. I couldn't find a search for the mailing list either, so sorry if this has been asked 92380498 times. -Charlie

Is there any way to make them unmodifiable, but still allow them to see them, and move mail into/out of them? [Dovecot] Dovecot with mbox and maildir

Hello, I have a question, i need migrate from old mail server to new mail server, the mailboxes format in the new mail server is maildir, in the old is mbox, the problem is that only the INBOXs are approximately 64Gb (are 7000 users), in the new I installed Dovecot, in the old is UW-Imap. The question is, Is there any form for have mbox and maildir simultaneously with Dovecot? I am using Postfix, my MDA is procmail, this write mailbox in the correct format, then i can copy all INBOXs and HOMEs to the new mail server, and change the mailbox format "slowly", supposedly procmail detecting the mailbox format and Dovecot could detect too. [Dovecot] self-signed certificates

Hallo, i'm having troubles installing self-signed certificates for dovecot. After installing, dovecot generates a key and cert. But he is using the wrong common name (where does dovecot get this name from?). I tried deleting them and installing a handcrafted cert with this: openssl genrsa -out mail.key 2048 openssl req -new -key mail.key -out mail.csr openssl x509 -req -days 4312 -in mail.csr -out mail.cert -signkey mail.key after that i tried to update the dovecont.conf to point to the new files. But dovecot refuses to read them, i allways get an error, that dovecot can't read the certificate file. With dpkg-reconfigure dovecot-common, dovecot generates new ones, and they are working fine, but have the wrong common name. Thanks in advance Regards Benjamin

If you're really concerned, then use "make -n install", and go over the commands that make would have run, you will be able to see exactly where everything goes. Or you could run "make install" inside a chroot jail. I also seem to recall that I saw a script somewhere that could trace the "make install" procedure and print exactly where it puts everything. When you use RPM/DPKG for manging your configuration, each package you install is responsible for its own files and nothing more. The packaging system makes sure that nothing conflicts or overwrites existing files. If you accidently untar a file with bad configuration files in it, they will probably overwrite your existing configuration. RPM/DPKG will save your old configuration files. Tar can't help you verify that what you installed is what is actually running. RPM -verify can make sure that no trojan has been installed instead of a file provided in an RPM file. [Dovecot] dspam plugin mailing list?

Hi, Every once a while I get mail about my dspam plugin. While that's great (tells me people are using it or at least like the idea), sometimes I think the discussions then should be accessible to others. I'm thinking of setting up a new mailing list for it so answers get archived, are searchable, and I don't necessarily have to reply to everything. I'm not sure if that's feasible though, there probably aren't *that* many users, and sometimes the questions are more dovecot questions. Would anyone on this list (esp. Timo of course) mind if I were to note on the plugin page that discussion and questions should be sent to this (the dovecot) mailing list? I'll still be reading here and answering questions, of course, but then if something crops up that's more dovecot than plugin related it's at the right place already, or if I'm off for a few days and someone else knows the answer... If there are any objections I'll just set up a private mailing list instead and ask anyone interested to join (it'd be very low volume I guess) :) johannes

Hi, We're getting a lot of errors like this: Mar 7 10:02:35 imapserver dovecot: imap(user1): mbox sync: UID inserted in the middle of mailbox /home/user1/mail/mail/INBOX.Trash (8 > 2, seq=2,idx_msgs=6) We have several hundred people using the server, and at least 22 have had this error in the past 24 hours. The numbers at the end change between each user, which I guess you'd expect. I was able to make the errors go away for one user by removing the index files (rm -rf ~/mail/.imap/INBOX), so I'm guessing they were corrupt. However, the problem with this is that: 1) It requires user intervention 2) The symptom is that they aren't seeing any new mail in the affected mailbox. I had thought that the indexing stuff would not *give up*, but would reindex a directory if there was a problem. Anyone able to help? Some info on our setup: /home/user is nfs-mounted. We allow them to configure their mbox/maildir type and location, but obviously this is only relating to mbox ones. [Dovecot] Dovecot as a smart IMAP proxy

Do you see a use for an IMAP proxy where the proxy would be able to execute hooks which modify mail contents, such as transparent encrypting/decrypting mails, or maybe some virus-filtering? It would need at least some kind of IMAP command/reply parsing capabilities, so it might be able to do all kinds of other things. Maybe one potential use case would be Cyrus Murder-like proxying to multiple IMAP servers to distribute the mailboxes. But that might be done better as an imap process plugin, or maybe as IMAP mail storage backend. Anyway, the reason I'm asking this is because I was asked to add mail encryption/decryption capabilities to Dovecot's IMAP proxy, but I'm not sure what would be the best way to handle this. In any case it would be a plugin or a new binary which is executed instead of imap binary, but can I do it in a way that would actually be useful for Dovecot project in general?

Hi, All: I hava just post a question that says when I move mail from one folder to another, mails were holded in the tmp directory of the target folder. I try to move mails from server to local and then, move them from the local folder to the server side folder, it works fine :) I refresh the tmp directory and could see tmp files created-unlinked, and all mail imported to the target folder currectly. Version: 1.0.beta3 OS: Redhat AS 4 I use the cvs version of Dovecot to run my IMAP server. When I move some mails from one folder to another, only 1 or 2 mails are moved, while others were holded in the tmp directory of the target folder. So, what's the matter? A few quick questions, as documentation seems to be sparse. * Is there a way to force a shared folder to be subscribed to? If I am using SquirrelMail I have a plugin to do that, but not if they are using another IMAP client. * Are there some sort of ACL's on shared folders, so that I can (hopefully with a sql backend), allow different users different permissions on the folder? * Is it a bug that we can't subscribe to the shared folder, only to it's sub folders? (and is there a way to work around this, i.e. if the shared folder isn't really a Maildir, but it's sub folders are? Other than that, so far, my glimpse at 1.0beta3 is looking very good, and came at the right time, as I was thinking I might need to use Cyrus for the project I'm working on atm... Hi, I'm using mbox format w/ dovecot 1.0b3. I tried moving over my mail from a uw-imap server. Everything works fine except I can't create subfolders. Trying out the new convert tool, to migrate from mbox to maildir. Using this syntax ( both inbox and folders are in user's home dir, in mbox format ) ./convert-tool pinetest/export/home2/pinetest \ mbox:/export/home2/pinetest/:INBOX=/export/home2/pinetest/mbox \ maildir:/export/home2/pinetest/Maildir/ I get this error. "Error: Mailbox conversion: Couldn't create mailbox home/Trash Error: Internal failure" Where does it get home/Trash from is hard to guess. I'm not using any variables, every path explicitly says "/export/home2/pinetest" Any ideas ?

Hi All, I suspect that the answer is "no way," but there's hope. I'm trying to set up a PHP application Ingo (part of Horde suite) to create the file <home>/.dovecot.sieve for the "advanced" LDA to do mail sorting. Because PHP is running under a Web server user, Ingo can't really write this file directly. My question is, is there any way for Ingo (or any other tool, for that matter) to create that file via IMAP protocol interaction? Horde authenticates users and "knows" login/password combination (that's how it accesses mail folders). Thank you! Sergey.

Just got dovecot running inside MEPIS 3.3.2 SOHO (debian). I am impressed. It works really well and I am planning to move my mail away from my Win server and access the mail from dovecot using imap. I have copied some folders from my existing Outlook mail system into the imap mail server without any problems....so here is the dumb question: where are the mail files/folders stored on the MEPIS server? I have been all over the file system and cant find any files that look right. The dovecot doco talks about mail location for the index files - but I have looked in all of those and cant find anything. The MEPIS system has a Maildir for the user......but that looks just as it did at install: contains three folders, cur, new and tmp all of which are empty :( Please dont flame - I have looked and I did try to find the answer but I although I can see the folders and messages through the imap client I cant actually find anything on the server.......and I would like to see something before I turn my Win mail server off. [Dovecot] Apple Mail cannot connect (1.0 beta3)

I'm testing 1.0 beta3 on our mail server, and finding that Apple Mail seems unable to connect to it. I'm running the 1.0b3 on port 997 so we can test it in parallel to 0.91 to compare performance (so far, it's hella faster). I've ensured that the users testing are _not_ connecting in any way to the 0.91 version running on port 993. From the OS X client side (10.4.5 + latest patches), Apple Mail simply sits there and spins, and eventually times out. The error it gives is: ----- Alert There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Check the settings for account "UCSD" or try again. The server error encountered was: The connection to the server "csefast.ucsd.edu" on port 0 timed out. ----- I'm thinking, "port 0, WTF?" ... [Dovecot] Thunderbird 1.5 and dovecot 1.0 beta 3 problem

My mailhosting provider has been testing dovecot 1.0 beta 3 as a proxy server and they asked the customers if they would like to test it out and report any issues. I am using Thunderbird 1.5 (IMAP) and have been with this mailhosting company for two months and have no issues at all with their current setup which uses Perdition as their proxy servers. The problem(s) I am encountered have been reported here a few times previously over the last couple of years but in searching I have not found any concrete solutions. When I first tested it out there was a continuous problem of a failure in saving a copy of an email to the sent folder although the message was sent. One of the staff of the mailhosting company noted this exact problem as well and believed the issue was Dovecot announcing different IMAP capabilities than the real backend IMAP servers (via the CAPABILITY command). This was supposedly fixed and initially there were no issues with the first set of test emails. However, in short order, this problem re-emerged and there would be sporadic failures to copy a message to the sent folder. Another issue would be that every now and then, when clicking on a folder in the left-hand pane (and no other activity going on with Thunderbird like downloading a new mail) Thunderbird would hourglass for 10-15 seconds as if it were trying to open a connection and was having difficulty. The maximum number of connections setup in Thunderbird is the default 5 and I am advised that this is the correct setting with their servers. Reducing the maximum number of connections does not appear to change matters in terms of avoiding these problems. Changing back to the current system (ie not using the test proxy server) both these issues disappeared. I have been in communication with the mailhosting provider as to my findings but it would be most appreciated if others here would perhaps have some insight into this matter. Peter

A few of the accounts on my main mailserver are failing to log in with errors like this: dovecot: Mar 02 19:33:35 Error: imap(user(a)example.com): maildir_file_do(/var/lib/vpopmail/domains/example.com/user/Maildir) racing if I log in by telnet everything is fine, and from the source it looks like the error happens when dovecot fails to get a lock on some important file or other. One of our servers running Dovecot 1.0.beta3 and dovecot-lda has failed to deliver a few messages and I can't figure out why. Very few messages bounce and I don't see any common thread between them other than time. Hey guys, Does anyone have any ideas as to when this may be implemented? I'd love to be able to use dovecot, but without quota support, it just won't fit the bill. Is there any developer documentation as to what would be required to fully support maildir quotas as I'd be willing to help implement it assuming it's not going to take me weeks to become familiar enough with the codebase. I have followed the Dovecot/Postfix/SASL howto, and modified the main.cf and dovecot.conf files, yet when trying to authenticate during a postfix SMTP session the log reports: "postfix/smtpd....warning: SASL authentication failure: Could not open db" Dovecot itself is authenticating IMAP logins correctly, and it is creating the auth file in the location specified under /var/spool/postfix/private. Why is postfix not able to get to the Dovecot auth mechanism? Thanks. Hugh

I just downloaded dovecot 1.0b3 and running "make install" gives me an error This seems like a fairly simple bug in the Makefile ... but I'm not sure if maybe its a symptom of something more complex. Hi, when I move some recent mail from some mbox folder into Maildir folder the moved email sorts as the first (on top) in the folder while it should be on the bottom with the rest of the recent emails in the folder. This happens only when moving from mbox folder to Maildir folder. I am not sure if it is really Dovecot bug or not but I suspect it could be so because it only happens in this one specific scenario. We're currently in the process of organising a migration from mbox to maildir mail storage on our server, and are hoping to phase this in gradually using dovecot's capabilities. Procmail has already been configured to deliver mail to either the existing mbox or to a new maildir for the user based on the (non)existence of a .converted file in their home directory. Where we are having problems is the pop3 retrieval side of things. Basically, we're chasing a setup where dovecot will first check to see if /mail/<first letter of username>/username exists (indicating that the account has had the .converted file created and new mail has since been delivered to that user in the new maildir format). If this directory does not exist, it should fallback to retrieving mail from the as-yet unconverted mbox, /var/mail/username. We've tried different combinations of namespaces and default_mail_env values to achieve this without success. One attempt which has come particularly close was: 1. Leaving /etc/dovecot.conf almost entirely default. All attempts to make this last adjustment have ultimately modified the behaviour of dovecot so that it only checks the one source explicity given, and then simply fails if it does not exist, unlike the unconfigured behaviour illustrated above where it is able to fallback to a secondary source. A '2nd_default_mail_env' is the type of variable I'm looking to define, if that makes it any clearer. Any advice much appreciated, I've already searched most of the archives for this list without finding anything similar.

Hi - im trawling through my config trying to reduce chances of timeouts etc - I use postgres for all the dovecot and exim4 authentication and location of mail directories etc - and found that by eliminating logging (or reducing to almost none) the queries invovled have gone from >500ms to <3ms - Just wondering if I'll get similar performance gains with dovecot (which is set to be verbose as I could) - esp during connection thx Glenn

Hi All I intermittently get these kind of errors when connecting to my beta2 imap dovecot: reported error 0x8004df0b:'Outlook is unable to download folder (null) from the imap email server for account mymailhost.com'. Error the server is unavailable. Receiveing Reported error (0x800CC0F):'The connection to the server was interrupted' While these are from outlook - I often get one simiar to the first one in my evolution clients. Are these things that can be best managed with some sort of configuration change? What might be other possible causes of these (apart from a power cut to the server? thx Glenn

I just installed a new email server using RHEL4. I only want pop3d services, no imap is desired so I modified the dovecot.conf file by changing to "protocols = pop3". All is working fine. However, dovecot requires access to /home/user/mail or the Thunderbird client hangs when attempting to download email. We have a single /home that is mounted by all servers for all users. We do not want the mail server to mount this /home. So I created directories with the usernames in the mail server's /home. This is not desired from a system management perspective. The files dovecot creates in the /home/user/mail directory appear to be for the use of IMAP which we do not use. How do I configure dovecot to not access /home and to not create any IMAP files? Hi. I've just compiled dovecot-1.0.alpha5 with mysql support.from freebsd ports (FreeBSD 6.0-RELEASE). It looks like dovecot has problems connecting to mysql. Hello, we have a large base of mailbox users and while pop3-connections are usually closed after the download of all mails, I noticed hundrets of imap-connections kept idle by the users. This is surely according to the idea behind imap, but I'm a bit afraid of overwhelming memory consumption if there are too many imap-connections opened at the same time. Is the index file kept in memory as long as an imap-connection exists, or is it closed as soon as a certain read or write command has finished? Regards Marten

[Dovecot] rpm build problem with beta 3

Hi I have a small problem with building a rpm of dovecot. I normally build rpms from the tar balls to install on our servers. With beta 3 I'm getting the error below. It builds fine if it is left stock with no ldap support. This the snip from the .spec file I put the --with-ldap as I require ldap support however this is stoping it from building. %configure \ --with-ldap \ --with-ssl="openssl" \ --with-ssldir="%{_sysconfdir}/ssl" I have tested this on Fedora Core 3 and Core 4 both get the same. Ok, here's my situation. I currently run IMail 7.x with about 80 domains and nearly 4000 users. I want to switch this to a Linux server. I'm using Virtualmin to manage the users/postfix. I have dovecot working just peachy with the setup, except for one problem. We are an ISP. The easiest thing for us (and our users) is to have them use their full email address as their username. What I need is some way to have Dovecot take a username and map it to the real unix user. Our unix users are created as "username-domain.com" When our users login to our current email system, they enter their username as "username(a)domain.com". I for the life of me cannot figure out how to make Dovecot take "username(a)domain.com" and know that the unix username is really "username-domain.com" Ideas? -Adam "Fuzzy" Kennedy

Hi all, I'm new in using dovecot and I'm running in a problem, which I cannot solve without hours and hours of work. Maybe there is a solution, which I didn't find with old friend google :_) Here is the problem: We are using an old mailserver (it's running fine for 5 years) with qmail and the old uw-imap server. All users have their grown directories under a home/Maildir folder. All subdirectories are lying under Maildir/sub/sub/sub. Now I want to migrate to dovecot and I have a lot of trouble, cause I cannot find a solution to migrate to the folder structure /Maildir/.sub.sub.sub. It's really difficult cause all the windows users have subdirs like one folder (1945)/a new ö/ and something like that! Hi, I a currently running a server which is using uw-imap server which currently has 190 users. I am looking to move the server OS and the imap server to Dovecot Imap Server. We are currently using mbox as the default mail file. I have a couple of questions to ask. 1) Would it be better if we moved to maildirs during the server move? 2) All current mail files are in a directly called /export/home/mail/%username. I have built dovecot with kerberos support, however am not able to log in using GSSAPI support in my mail client. I receive the following error: SASL(-4): no mechanism available: No worthy mechs found Additionally, Digest-MD5 does not work - I receive an authentication failed (as though I have an incorrect password) if I try to use it. I am using PostgreSQL for authentication, and returning a plaintext password with my SQL query. LOGIN, PLAIN, NTLM, and CRAM-MD5 are all working as expected. I tried making the change shown in Mark Davies' src/auth/mech-gssapi.c patch (posted to the list on 10 February), but it had no effect. Any advice welcome! Hi, I was wondering whether anybody has managed to get Dovecot 1.0 to store INBOX as Maildir and folders as mbox. I've tried something like default_mail_env = mbox:/folders/user/mail:INBOX=maildir:/inboxes/maildir/user:INDEX=/indexes/user but it doesn't seem to work (treats INBOX as mbox). I'm hoping to move some INBOXes from mbox on local disk to Maildir on nicely-mirrored NetApp NFS (or possibly iSCSI) servers for redundancy and better incremental backups. I'm probably doing something silly, or have misunderstood something! [Dovecot] Changing listen ports

Hi, I want to change ports that Dovecot uses to listen for connections. I have listen = [::] in global section and listen = 0.0.0.0:10143 and listen = 0.0.0.0:10110 in protocol imap and protocol pop3 sections. The problem is that it doesn't seem to work for SSL ports of the two protocols and I get following error when I try to start the service: Fatal: listen(993) failed: Address already in use This is because I still have IMAP-UW installed and running. I am having a problem with Dovecot and imap; users are not being able to empty their trash from time to time. Here is what I am running: [root@xxxx root]# rpm -q dovecot dovecot-0.99.13-3.FC3 [root@xxxx root]# uname -a Linux xxxx 2.6.12-1.1381_FC3smp #1 SMP Fri Oct 21 04:03:26 EDT 2005 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux [root@xxxx root]# Several times a week different users get the following pop up message when they empty trash (manually by selecting "delete trash" on their mail client): "The current command did not succeed. The mail server responded: Internal error occurred. Refer to server log for more information. {2006-02-22 08:46:24]." The quick and dirty fix is to go into their home dir and empty the trash folder (ie "> Trash"). I have checked the log and do not see anything useful at the time noted in the pop up error message on the users client. I have now set up logging to separate files to make debugging a bit easier: log_path = /var/log/dovecot.log info_log_path = /var/log/dovecot-info.log Most of my users are using Netscape for mail. I have searched the web and archives of this list with little luck. Some people mention issues with quota but I am not running quota. Has anyone seen this or can point me in the right direction to debug this problem further ? James H. I get the following error when I check my mail a lot. I can keep refreshing until all errors are gone, then I am alright. This started happening when I turned on the serverside sorting in squirrelmail. How do I check to see which mails are causing this problem? ERROR: Could not complete request. I've set up dovecot on a testbed server. Each time a user ('myusername') connects via imap, I get the following info in mail.log: dovecot: imap(myusername): fcntl(F_NOTIFY) failed: Invalid argument I'm using these config settings in dovecot.conf in an attempt to avoid fcntl lock_method = dotlock mbox_read_locks = dotlock mbox_write_locks = dotlock I've looked through the archives but haven't seen this particular message, so I am a bit lost. I've tried fiddling with the NOTIFY defines in config.h but these don't seem to make a difference, if they compile at all. I'm on lib6 on this Debian Woody (kernel 2.2.25) box. I don't know how realistic it would be to get up to a latest glibc, if this is where the problem exists. Can anyone point me in the right direction or provide some insight? Is it possible to have Dovecot cleanly terminate an IMAP session after a certain time? I have a number of users who leave their MUA (Mozilla Thunderbird) on all night, and I'd like to have them (cleanly) disconnect in order to free up resources after a certain "inactivity" time (e.g. 2 hours). What fun. I don't often stoke up the boiler and actually compile open-source code, but here I am at the beginning of just such a joyous and wondrous adventure. Due to a fault in a procmail recipe, a number of files have been sent to 'Folder ^'. Would this mean anything at all to Dovecot? At this point I don't know whether the messages are physically on my drive or have been sent to /dev/null. I know there was one important message among them, so if they are recoverable I'd like to check them. Anne

Hi! I just wanted to know if anyone can give a definitive answer if dovecot beta's memory requirements are much better than in the old pre-alpha "stable" series? I'm using a rather old stable.20050712 release on an also rather old Debian Sarge box to manage my personal mails. I'm pretty satisfied with this dovecot release but it's memory consumption when deleting messages causes major troubles on this box - more than 500 MB of virtual memory allocated to the "imap" process is quite a lot and often causes random processes to fall victim to the OOM killer. :-( Adding even more swap space also is no viable option. (The system has 64 MB RAM and currently about 650 MB swap space.) So, would it be worth a try to install dovecot beta2 or something when it's released, or won't it help in this regard? I won't want to sacrificy the otherwise well working installation, if dovecot beta2 isn't guaranteed to help I'll continue to monitor available memory and swap space while cleaning up my spams... [Dovecot] Problems with authentication

Hi there. I've got a running qmail+vpopmail+mysql5 server on FreeBSD and I would like to give IMAP access to it (both for user's sake and to have a decent webmail), so I decided to install dovecot (it certainly does its work on my home box). Problem is: I haven't had success with authentication. At first I tried the most obvious: using the vpopmail backend. Unfortunately I received lots of "vmysql: MySQL server has gone away" just like in http://article.gmane.org/gmane.mail.imap.dovecot/10321 So I decided to spice up a query to vpopmail's MySQL table, and there another problem was waiting for me: "Access denied" just like in this thread http://article.gmane.org/gmane.mail.imap.dovecot/9077 Only difference: in my case using OLD_PASSWORD() didn't solve the problem and -thinking about it better- couln't possibly have solved it: that FreeBSD is a recent fresh install and I installed MySQL 5.0.18 from sources using the "ports" system, so a library with no support for new PASSWORD() has never seen the light on that box. I kinda went around the problem using a shell script to dump the MySQL table to a SQLite file and authentication dovecot against that, but while this work-around can do for a little bit I'd really like to solve the problem itself, and avoid having to keep ni sync those two DBs (no, unfortunately vpopmail doesn't support SQLite, else I'd use that: it would also have the nice side-effect that a "down" on mysql side wouldn't hurt the mail subsystem). Any suggestions or idea how I could solve or, at least, better diagnose the problem(s)? Yours, Lapo

Is there a way to use rawlog to log the full IMAP session when running Dovecot as a front-end proxy for other IMAP servers? If so, how?... I couldn't figure it out. Or is there another debug setting that can give me this information? If not, what is the best method to sniff the IMAP session for debugging a proxy?... ethereal? Not sure if this is a Dovecot bug or a KMail bug, but since it only seems to happen to people using KMail to access a Dovecot server or a Novell NetWare IMAP server, I thought I should mention it here. <http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=121866> From the bug report: When I check for mail on an IMAP account (not disconnected), all recently-received messages disappear prior to any mail check, any new messages appear, and then the messages that disappeared earlier reappear. This does not seem to cause any harm, but it is horrendously inefficient if there are a lot of messages in an IMAP folder so affected. I was wondering, does Dovecot's IMAP server hand Outlook XP's contact lists? I tried to enter a contact on my IMAP server and received an error from Outlook stating that the Contacts formatting was too complex and thus couldn't be saved. I went ahead and swung my box over to MailDir and scrapped Sendmail for Postfix [for maildir support], I was wondering, would this issue continue? In other words, by swinging over to MailDir, would Dovecot be able to handle Outlook's Contacts information? Will L G

The rebuild server is now almost complete. Dovecot is running, and I can telnet and log in. In kmail on this workstation I have created an imap account, for which Inbox was created. I also created Trash and sent-mail as top-level folders, and they display correctly with the cur, new and tmp sub-folders on the server. I now want to create subfolders of Inbox, and there I'm coming unstuck. [Dovecot] Login processes don't die

Hello, I'm a fresh dovecot user (resp. admin), using dovecot 0.99.14 (a little old, but that's what Debian Sarge provides). In general everything works as it should, but there's something that makes me wonder. The wiki says "By default each login process will handle only a single connection and afterwards kill itself." But it does look different to me. On startup there are two imap-login processes running (login_processes_count is 2). When connecting with Sylpheed, one additional imap process is running. But when connecting with Mozilla (Seamonkey), I get three imap-login and one imap process at minimum (Maximum number of server connections to cache set to 1 in Mozilla). If the cached connections is set to 2, there are four imap-login and two imap processes. So it looks to me as the login processes don't get killed. Is this a client issue (but how could it keep the login alive?), is this a known bug in the older dovecot, or something unknown? BTW, login_process_per_connection is default. Regards, Jürgen

I have dovecot (0.99.14 under FC4) set up and working beautifully for my mail, handing on to procmail, and handling many subfolders. Today I needed to set up a second user. I added his account in kmail and created a sub-folder, but no sent-mail, trash etc. were created. I have sent test messages and /var/log/maillog says they have been processed, but they are not arriving in his inbox. /var/log/mail.info shows that he has logged in to dovecot. He has a simple .procmailrc to handle the one subdirectory. I'm sure that it must be something I've missed in dovecot.conf, but I can't see anything there that shouldn't work just as well for him as it does for me. Any pointers? Anne

This is dovecot 1.0.beta2, which has been running for about 2 days. Any indication where this message is coming from? The first day we never saw this message appearing. [Dovecot] Authentication failing - Ant Internet Suite (Risc-OS)

Switched to using dovecot for POP3, PLAIN login. One client with "Ant Internet Suite" can't use the service with this client, he used the same setting with another email client and it worked. On inspection of the packets, it is sending one packet with; "user username\r\npass password\r\nstat\r\n" Dovecot sends an "-ERR Unknown command", then a "+OK Logged in". I'm wondering if things got out of sequence here, since a "STAT" to dovecot before authentication causes the "Unknown command" error. "STAT" isn't allowed in the authentication stage... but well it issued it last.... Anyway I'm unclear here on the precise details of the packet trace, possible it is responding to an earlier packet, but thought I'd ask before pursuing this further in case some one leaps up and says "oh that'll be...". The client software has an option to disabled "queued commands" buried deep within it (append /ucb to user details), I suggested trying this if possible, will report back if it works. Also mentioned in a Google search. I'm curious as to what is right here, but the "/ucb" is presumably the practical answer if it works. Simon

Since there have been so many requests, I guess it's time for beta3 now. There are a couple of issues that I'm still concerned about, but those probably happen with beta2 as well. If you're beginning to see more connection hangs/timeouts with this release, please tell me. * Dotlock code changed to timeout faster in some situations when the lock file is old. + Added support for loading SQL drivers dynamically (see INSTALL file for how to build them) + Keywords are stored to dboxes, and other dbox improvements. + dict-sql could actually work now, making quota-in-sql-database possibly working now (not fully tested) + Added mail storage conversion plugin to convert automatically from one mailbox format to another while user logs in. Doesn't preserve UIDVALIDITY/UIDs though. + Added plugin { .. } section to dovecot.conf for passing parameters to plugins (see dovecot-example.conf). + Added ssl-build-param binary which is used to generate ssl-parameters.dat. Main dovecot binary doesn't anymore link to SSL libraries, and this also makes the process title be clearer about why the process is eating all the CPU. - Fix building without OpenSSL - Fixed memory leak in MySQL driver - Fixes to checkpassword - Broken Content-Length header could have broken mbox opening - Fixed potential hangs after APPEND command - Fixed potential crashes in dovecot-auth and imap/pop3-login - zlib plugin now links with -lz so it could actually work - kqueue fixes by Vaclav Haisman

Its not a rush (since I'm not even sure the phones will be out before Q2), but it'd be a cool thing to have. Timo encouraged me to forward this to the list. Basically it pokes the right value into the right place to make quota deltas work properly when saving mail to Maildirs. It's a nasty hack workaround, so don't rely on it without understanding that it should be superseded in future. Hello Timo, I am compiling dovecot-1.0.beta3, and I get the following message when the dovecot-auth module is being compiled: Undefined symbol sql_drivers_register_all first referenced in main.o Now I had run 'configure' with the '--without-sql-drivers' since I neither have MySQL or PostgresSQL installed on my server. Does this mean I DO have to get either package, install, and run it '--with-sql-drivers'? Or is it that the '--without...' feature doesn't work as intended? Am I making ANY sense? Thanks.

The configuration files has settings that seem to address the issues of using indexes on NFS (i.e. locking and mmap fixes), but we are using Dovecot on NFS, and when the load gets high we start to see a lot of NFS stale file handle errors, particularly with MS clients like Outlook. I see the discussion about these errors from last year. Any updates on the state of the code? [Dovecot] imap_capability setting

In src/master/master-settings.c, there is a config variable "imap_capability" that is read in from the conf file... but in the rest of the code it looks like that variable is never used. I assume this is there for future use, but just wanted to confirm that the code not using it was intentional. Since we are using Dovecot as an IMAP proxy for a Courier backend (for now), we need to advertise a different capability string than the Dovecot default. I have changed the hardcoded value in the ./configure script (@ 31015) for now. Bill

Hi, I think I already know the answer to this and I agree with it, but I have a question about "invalid" mailbox naming decisions in dovecot. Technically, RFC3501 (Section 5.1, pg. 18, client consideration 3) says that * and % are legal in mailbox names, though it implicitly discourages their use. We just migrated to dovecot, and unfortunately have a few users who used * in their mailbox naming (which worked on our old IMAP server). I looked in the mailing list and source comments, but I could not find any discussion. Hello, Im using dspam 3.6.3 in combination with Dovecot, procmail and Sendmail. Everything works fine but I want to replace procmail by dovecot-LDA. A few changes to dspam.conf results in a takeover by dovecot-LDA. Unfortunately this is where it goes awry; besides the d argument (user), dspam also supplies the f argument (fromwhom). The use of the f argument results in an error because dovecot-LDA does not know what to do with it. Is there an option to ignore the passing of 'fromwhom' from dspam? -- In individuals, insanity is rare; but in groups, parties, nations and epochs, it is the rule.

[Dovecot] Message index corruption when using Thunderbird and Dovecot

Hi all, I have recently upgraded from UW-IMAP to Dovecot 1.0.beta3 on Redhat9. I migrated my mailbox to from Mbox to Maildir using the mb2md perl script, and created a procmail recipe file to get email arriving in the Maildir directories. However, when accessing my mailbox from Thunderbird (version 1.5), it occasionally mixes up the email header with the email content. I also occasionally get errors like this when clicking on old messages (ones that got converted as part of the mb2md script). The current command did not succeed. The mail server responded: Error in IMAP command UID: Invalid BODY[..] parameter: Missing '>' in '<16384.-15744>' However, if I click on the email item again, Thunderbird is then able to retrieve the message correctly. Can anyone provide some help with these problem. I'm wondering if this is a version issue with Mail.app? Are you on OS X 10.3 or 10.4? The reason I ask is that we also migrated from Courier IMAP to Dovecot 1.0alpha5 and then beta3, and we did not have this problem with Mail.app that either of you are describing. I did have to remove the "INBOX." prefix from my Mail.app configurations. I also renamed all of the existing folders in my Maildir from INBOX.foldername to .foldername, because after removing the "INBOX." prefix Mail.app could not see them. Before I renamed all of the existing folders and changed the prefix in Mail.app, I had also tried setting up alternate namespaces as described in the wiki documentation for converting from Courier, but that did not seem to work. Mail.app and Thunderbird clients could not see their IMAP folders with the courier-style namespace configuration. -- Roger J. [Dovecot] Dovecot-1.0.beta1: New mail sometimes fails to appear

Hi there... Having updated to 1.0.beta1, I for a while thought a bad bug with IDLE handling that caused new mail in INBOX not to appear when using Mozilla Thunderbird has been solved. Although I can not reproduce one kind of problem anymore, after a short while it again appears that one does not always see one's new mail with Thunderbird. I can not consistently reproduce the bug, but from some network captures it indeed appears that sometimes Thunderbird has (in one of its connections to the server) INBOX SELECTed and IDLE on it, new mail arrives, but 10 minutes afterwards it was still not sent an EXISTS message. Initially the symptoms appeared to suggest that something really bad happened to the index files, but I tried INDEX=MEMORY and that did not help much. Thunderbird using multiple connections to the server does of course only make debugging more difficult. But it appears that without multiple connections, one has to constantly cycle around SELECTing to get notified on more than one mailbox, so that may justified. I am a bit lost on this now, and would appreciate some ideas. Although there were several related bugs I noticed in Thunderbird 1.0, it appears that they are gone in 1.5, and yet now it really seems Dovecot is doing something wrong here. Attached is the configuration file I use for the testing installation of Dovecot 1.0.beta1 (somebody tell me if you see something wrong there). The mailbox arrangement is as follows, right now (until we have a better way): * INBOX in /var/mail/%u * most mailboxes in ~/imap.maildir/... as maildirs. * mboxes in ~/imap.mbox/... accessible as #imap.mbox/... * the mbox:~/mail/ is for when namespaces are not used - now there are so it should not be relevant Except for myself, and one test account I have, I have two guinea-pigs using it (who are well aware that it is still under development and that it will break once in a while) and reporting problems to me. Vaguely (since I can't figure the exact reasons), the symptom can be described as follows: When using Mozilla Thunderbird to access mail, new mail arrives to INBOX (mbox:/var/mail/%u), but is sometimes not seen for a long while after it arrives. Sometimes the first (or first few) message arriving appears, but then no new messages appear, and sometimes everything works right and immediately new mail is seen. However whenever (according to Thunderbird) something changes in the mailbox, the mailbox is seen up-to-date as it really was at that time. [Dovecot] Mail.app help

I'm having a problem with Mail.app and imap folders. I've got a new install of dovecot 1.0beta2, and am only experiencing this problem with Mail. Mutt works as expected, as well as thunderbird. When I create a folder using Mail.app, it is written to ~/Maildir/.INBOX.newfolder, which would be fine, if I wasn't telling everything that I wanted no prefixes. If I move that folder to ~/Maildir/.newfolder, Mail.app can no longer see it, but mutt and thunderbird can. Thunderbird _CAN_ see the folders created as .INBOX.Folder, and even shows it as a subfolder of my inbox, but Mutt completely refuses to see it. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong here?

Hi, the wiki doesn't explain the file format for passwd-file. I want to do a small set of virtual users using flat files. I have my postfix "vmailbox" generated, and working as expected for delivery. I've configured dovecot, put passwd-file for the auth_passdb, and specified a file name. By "passwd like" what is allowed? Where is it document. How unlike passwd can it be? Must I read the source code? Simon

I need to be able to setup a nologin system for users on my mail server on a per user basis. We are going to do some maintenance on each user (individually) and would like it if they could not login to dovecot while we do this. I was curious if dovecot implemented anything like this. We are currently using standard pam authentication (nothing db related) and I was hoping to be able to touch a "nologin" file on a per user basis in their home directory. I think I could do this with some pam magic, but was curious if dovecot had something in it that would allow for this. Note: I understand I will have to forcibly kill active connections. --Robert

Hello, I am in the process of migrating a hosting setup from UW-IMAP to Dovecot. The protocols available to mail clients are IMAP and POP3 both before and after migration. I also wanted to change the mail storage format from MBOX to Maildir. However, at this point I hit a major snag with Dovecot and POP3 UIDL (unique identification listing for POP3 mailboxes). Several of the customers connecting to the mailserver in question are using POP3 clients and leave their e-mails on the server. To avoid downloading all messages every time the clients connect they use the UIDL command in the POP3 specification to determine if any new messages have arrived since last time they checked. In order for this to work the unique identifier of each message must be static and can never change. If the identifiers change, every client will download all messages again, mixing old messages with new, in the belief that all messages are new since their identifiers changed. The first step, migrating from UW-IMAP to Dovecot, did not pose any problems in this regard. Connecting to the POP3 service manually to show the UIDL output revealed: With UW-IMAP: uidl +OK Unique-ID listing follows 1 43ef424e00000001 2 43ef424e00000002 With Dovecot: uidl +OK 1 43ef424e00000001 2 43ef424e00000002 However, after performing a migration to Maildir, storing all messages in ~/Maildir for the user in question, I received a different UIDL output: uidl +OK 1 43ef523100000001 2 43ef523100000002 I used the mb2md utility available from http://batleth.sapienti-sat.org/projects/mb2md/ to do the conversion. Hi there! Is it possible to set timeout for IMAP connection somehow? The problem is when I'm using mutt to access IMAP mailbox, everything works fine, but after some idle time mutt tells mailbox is closed and next connection crashes it. With courier mutt works just fine, so I think may be dovecot have some timeout which need to be adjusted? I checked manuals and configuration, but no luck... In both cases (dovecot/courier) I'm using IMAP over SSL -- Eugene N Dzhurinsky

Drac is insecure by design, in that it doesn't authenticate the same channel (but POP3/IMAP instead) that is being privileged (SMTP for relay), and without any clue of how long dynamic IP mappings remain stable. [Dovecot] locking problems with RHEL 3 and dovecot

I just migrated from a FreeBSD/Sendmail/UW-IMAP setup to RHEL 3/Postfix/Dovecot (1.0a5 currently). Both systems used Procmail as the final delivery agent (into inboxes or . Since the changeover, things have *mostly* been going ok, but I've been having some problems that I think are locking-related. I'm getting reports from users about IMAP hangs (mostly from Thunderbird). Sometimes I see this in the Dovecot logs: ovecot: Feb 06 11:30:45 Error: imap(dbongert): fcntl() failed with mbox file /home/d/dbongert/mail/worklists/tech-partners: Resource temporarily unavailable Now, I have read that one should have everything that touches a mailbox use the same sort of locking, but that's the thing--these mailboxes are only accessed via dovecot. I'm sure a few users use procmail to filter their mail, but they're in the strict minority here. As as experiment, I changed these lines to flock rather than fcntl: mbox_read_locks = flock mbox_write_locks = dotlock flock But all that seems to have done is removed the fcntl errors from the log file. These errors seem to be Thunderbird only (1.07-1.5, Linux and Windows clients), but I'm not sure what that means. I've enabled the only thunderbird-specific IMAP workaround I know of: tb-extra-mailbox-sep, but I doubt that has anything to do with this problem. -- Dan Bongert dbongert(a)ssc.wisc.edu SSCC Unix System Administrator

[Dovecot] Maximum Folder Size/Number of Messages

I hope I'm asking this question in the right place, I don't want to offend. I've recently put together a proof of concept Dovecot IMAP server, and I'm very happy with its performance up to this point. I'm looking into using it to replace our existing POP3 server, allowing users to store email on the server rather than on their local machine, hopefully avoiding loss of data. The big question I have is, is there a realistic maximum realistic folder size, either in reference to number of messages or total file size with Dovecot? I'm using Maildir and running it on Debian Linux x86. Right now the filesystem is Ext3, although once the system goes live I'd be looking at something a little more fault tolerant and able to handle the large amount of data. Any recommendations you may have on Filesystem choice are appreciated too! Thanks, Ropetin.

Hi I compiled and configured dovecot-lda as explained in the Wiki (current CVS version). Now I get the following error message: Action: failed Status: 5.0.0 Diagnostic-Code: X-Postfix; Command died with status 80: "/usr/local/libexec/dovecot/deliver". Command output: deliver: Fatal: Can't open log file /var/log/dovecot.log: Permission denied Now, do I have to set this socket listen { master { path = /var/run/dovecot-auth-master mode = 0666 user = vmail # User running Dovecot LDA group = vmail # alternatively mode 0660 + LDA user in this group } } to something else? Or chown the log file? I use Postfix and Dovecot on Ubuntu Breezy. Thanks Martin

Hi, I've reported this some month ago before (without response), but still I have no clue what is going wrong. Our installation is LDAP based (for virtual hosting) and up to I think alpha2 or 3 everything was working as expected. The trouble I have is that dovecot does not correctly use the information it gets about mailLocation.
