But dovecot should not deliver this message as real mail, regardless of which client is used. Hello everybody! I'm trying to configure dovecot 1.1.1 with different proxy hosts and/or ports for different protocols (IMAP, POP3). I'm using LDAP for authentication. I've tried: 1) Variable in "auth default" configuration: [dovecot.conf] passdb ldap { args = /usr/local/etc/dovecot-ldap-%Ls.conf } userdb ldap { args = /usr/local/etc/dovecot-ldap-%Ls.conf } With results in dovecot not starting with error message: Can't open configuration file /usr/local/etc/dovecot-ldap-%Ls.conf: No such file or directory So %Ls was not replaced. 2) Variable in pass_attrs [dovecot-ldap.conf] pass_attrs = \ uid=user,userPassword=password,homeDirectory=userdb_home,\ uidNumber=userdb_uid,gidNumber=userdb_gid,\ dovecotProxy%Ls=proxy,dovecotHost%Ls=host,dovecotPort%Ls=port With results in this LDAP server log entries: SRCH attr=uid userPassword homeDirectory uidNumber gidNumber dovecotProxy%Ls dovecotHost%Ls dovecotPort%Ls So %Ls was not replaced also. mmmh... [Dovecot] How to pull /var/mail mbox leftovers to Maildirs?

I just got my preferred postfix+dovecot(-1.1.1) configuration working on Ubuntu 8.04 server. Users and Maildirs migrated, etc. I wasn't seeing inbound mail (in the email client) until I set: sudo postconf -e 'home_mailbox = Maildir/' Which I hadn't needed in the previous server's main.cf I have a few hours worth of inbound mostly-spam in /var/mail/(username) during the time I was figuring this out. What command line tools could I use to pull those message from the mboxes to the Maildirs? Thanks.

[Dovecot] 1.1 namespaces and message corruption

Hello, I've been trying out the new dovecot's namespace support, and I'm having some issues moving messages between namespaces. Specifically, when I move some messages from a Maildir-based namespace to an mbox-based namespace, the message gets corrupted: its contents are removed, and an entirely empty message is added to the destination mailbox. This is 100% repeatable (some messages just *cannot* be copied intact). I have two namespaces, set up like so: namespace private { # Default separator = . hidden = no inbox = yes prefix = location = maildir:%h/Maildir } namespace private { separator = . hidden = no prefix = "INBOX.ArchiveTest." location = mbox:%h/Maildir/Archive } All I do is tell my client (mutt) to copy a message from a folder in the maildir namespace into a folder in the mbox namespace. Does anyone know what might be going wrong or how I can even debug this? No error messages of any kind are showing up in the dovecot log file, and the mail_debug setting doesn't seem to give me any useful information. [Dovecot] 'Book of IMAP' ?

Hi I am needing a bit more detail on IMAP protocol and setup possibilities (for an application in mind). I note that 'The Book of IMAP' has recently been published in English (May 08). It seems to be focused on Cyrus IMAP rather than Dovecot. Does anyone on the list have the book? Is the book's treatment of Cyrus IMAP much different from Dovecot? Thanks for any comments. Bob G

Hi, I've been trying some benchmarks to compare 1.0 vs 1.1 -this is the easiest way to explain the move to my boss-, so I've compiled dovecot 1.1 and imaptest-20080627 in my secondary machine running RHEL4, with homes in NFS, indeces in local files and control files also in NFS. Then I've created 100 new users imaptest001-imaptest100, and set the password paquitoelchocolatero to all of them. If users are checking their email using imap or pop, is there a way they can change their own passwords (so I can create a temporary one and let them change them to whatever they want) through, say, Thunderbird or whatever?

[Dovecot] Can't create subfolders when activating namespaces, e.g. private/public

Hi, i am using hardy dovecot, 1.0.10. If i enable namespaces (the private and a public one) i am unable to create new subfolders in my private namespace, only top level folders works. There is nothing in the log about that error even if i set mail_debug = yes. If i comment out everything (no namespaces at all, implicit private one), it works again. Any hints whats going wrong, why is my client getting the message about not being able to create this subfolder? kinds regards Torsten

Hi I have a mixed configuration for MAILDIR und MBOX accounts LDA is exim. For maildir exim writes a maildirsize file and I can see the IMAP contingent in my mailclient. But I can't find a solution for mbox. Hi, I use a non-root user to run auth program and get an error: auth-worker.18163) failed: Permission denied and cannot start dovecot. But with the same configration at another server, it works fine. If I use root, it works also. Any help? Hi, I've upgraded mail server to dovecot-1.1, on solaris-10 with mysql user database. I used sql query "SELECT NULL as password, login as user, concat('/mail/var/dovecot/',login) AS userdb_home, 501 AS userdb_uid, 501 AS userdb_gid FROM users WHERE login='%n' AND password=old_password('%w')" with dovecot-1.0.15 and it worked perfectly. But since upgrade the server can not authenticate any users, complaining in info_log: "Empty password returned without no_password". How to set up such things in dovecot-1.1? Hello all... Found a weird one here. I tried to search the web but I'm not having luck so I thought I'd hit the mailing list. We have noticed off and on all school year that every so often a user gets an email that they just can't delete using Thunderbird or Outlook over IMAP (we do not support Pop3 anymore.) Essentially the user clicks the email and takes it to the trash. When they empty the trash the email appears again in their inbox as if it was new! Up until this point I would just tell people to login to Usermin which is still set to access the email natively through the maildir format and delete it that way. What we have found out is that emails which have their info fields repeated twice are emails which can't be deleted. As far as the vitals go: We are running Dovecot 1.0.14 now, but I have been able to observe this problem through a few of the last versions. The server runs Slamd 64 10.2 (Opteron 64 CPUs) and all of the home directories are on a ReiserFS formatted Volume Anything else I can tell you please let me know and of course any info anybody can tell me about how to make this weirdness go away would be greatly appreciated. [Dovecot] Poor pop3 over nfs performance

Hi, About a week ago I upgraded our reasonably heavily loaded mail servers from a pretty recent courier version to dovecot-1.1rc10. IMAP performance on dovecot is amazing, however POP3 performance is worse than courier :-( I have uploaded some munin graphs taken today to http://linweb.atlas.pipex.net/dovecot/; the dovecot server is handling about 2000 pop logins/sec and 300 imap sessions (but these are negligible in terms of nfs ops). The courier server is handling a similar number of pop logins/sec but no imap (slightly less traffic overall but a similar number of logins). As you can see, dovecot seems to issue an awful lot more read requests than courier. The big spike at 10am is where I tried setting the :INDEX=MEMORY flag on dovecot as I assumed that's what courier is doing. I've also attached graphs of the relative network usage - as you can see, dovecot is using up to 100mbps whereas courier is using less than 10mbps; I believe this is due to the read. I initially assumed this high read load was due to courier building up its index files, but this has now been happening for about a week with little variation. The servers are both centos 5.0 (perhaps 5.1 actually, but with the latest centosplus kernel which fixes the nfs lookup bug in the standard kernels); and are not running any other nfs programs. The NFS server is a high performance NAS unit - no issues there.
