Hi, I see http://johannes.sipsolutions.net/Projects/dovecot-antispam and http://blog.cynapses.org/2007/09/13/dovecot-dspam-plugin/ solutions. Second git repo is not answer, first one is cloned, but I see some drawbacks with it. Dspam backend is more native solution but libdspam using instead of dspam external binary looks like preffered way to integrate dspam. Another problem is waiting for dspam child process exit, so IMAP session is blocked. Why not to fork and forget dspam child process? Email sender backend is non-blocking, but using MTA is great overhead. Calling external program with some args and mail body via pipe can be more suitable way, so external program may be dspam binary directly or shell/perl/python filter to any antispam engine via sendmail or something else. Has anybody plans to implement this features or it will be better to try it myself?

[Dovecot] Weirdness and Questions...

version 1.0.7 OK, so here is my weirdness. I sent mail to the server from the command line. mail username@localhost < /etc/passwd When I open /var/spool/mail/username I can see 2 messages. The "system" message at the top and the the message produced from my command line email. If I HUP the process that runs xinet.d and re-open the users mail spool the 2nd email disappears which I wouldn't expect. Has anyone seen this before. My SMTP server could be EXIM or Sendmail. My co- admin is in the process from switching over from to EXIM. I am not sure if the SMTP server has anything to do with it or not. I can see the contents of all the email in ~/mail which is rsynced from my old server so that seems to be working properly. I have mail_locatiion in my config file, do I need anything else? mail_location = mbox:~/mail:INBOX=/var/spool/mail/%u In my list of mailboxes that are in ~/mail I see 2 folders that I'd rather not see. There .customeflags and .INBOX Anyway to hide these, as they are not needed in my opinion. Thanks, James

I just installed dovecot 1.0.7 Set up the pem files for SSL, set up the xinet.d/imaps files and it logs into the server gets a list of all the mbox files in the ~/mail directory and creates representations of them in Apple mail. The problem I am having is when I click on one any of them I see no content. Execpt one. For some reason one of them shows the 2 emails that are inside of it. I am very confused by it. Help? James

Hello, I had an Inbox with 975,604 emails on ext3 filesystem. I keept getting dropped on the comand "copy 1:2000 inbox2", the syslog gave me an error message indicating "out of memory" problems. This despite the fact that the server has 800MB of ram free. Anyways, I asked if I could manuanlly move the files at the filesystem level or if that would mess up dovecot (break the GUIDs etc). I was informed that dovecot does not use GUIDs and that I could go ahead and move the emails at the shell level. So I did that, now the /cur folder only has 40,000 emails, but when I connect to the account via telnet, I still get the following: telnet localhost 143 Trying 127.0.0.1... Connected to localhost. Escape character is '^]'. * OK Dovecot ready. 110 login somelameuser somelamepass 110 OK Logged in. 111 select inbox * FLAGS (\Answered \Flagged \Deleted \Seen \Draft) * OK [PERMANENTFLAGS (\Answered \Flagged \Deleted \Seen \Draft \*)] Flags permitted. * 975604 EXISTS * 0 RECENT * OK [UNSEEN 1] First unseen. * OK [UIDVALIDITY 1188426666] UIDs valid * OK [UIDNEXT 979500] Predicted next UID 111 OK [READ-WRITE] Select completed. [Dovecot] dovecot loading during boot

I have two RHEL4 email servers running postfix/MailScanner which use dovecot. They work great. But during bootup the nfslock script in my init.d loads rpc.statd and calls portmap to get a port number. Portmap keeps giving rpc.statd the imaps port number (993). I then have to stop my mail server services, manually start dovecot, then restart the mail server services and everything goes merrily on its way. Stopping the mail server services drops rpc.statd from using port 993(according to netstat -tlnp). This allows dovecot to take it by default. How to I reserve imap and imaps ports exclusively for use by dovecot. The imap and imaps ports are listed in /etc/services. When I receive a mail that is addressed to my email address and also with a cc to a mailinglist I subscribe to, I get two mails, which I guess is expected... But I have just moved to Dovecot from Cyrus, and Cyrus seems to know that this is the same mail, so only one of those two mail is stored on the imap srv... Is there some option I am missing in Dovecot or isn't this possible using Dovecot? Is there anyway to make dovecot create Sent, Draft, etc folder automatically? Or is this the job for a MUA? Hello, I need an advice about POP3 and NFS with Dovecot 1.0 (as 1.1 is still tagged beta) . I currently have all messages and indexes under a NFS partition . I thus turned cache off using actimeo=0 . Of course, my current architecture does not allow me to keep the same user on the same dovecot server. Now, I have some NFS issues with high percentages of getattr() . If I understood well, the cache must be disabled, because of the case of 2 differents computers could log on the same time and mess up the index file . If I use the directive pop3_lock_session and enable it, that should block conccurent pop3 access using a lock file . Can I consider it safe enough to turn on the NFS cache (ie removing actimeo=0) ? Thanks in advance Salim Ps: For you info, we use dovecot here for a big cable broadband ISP, with 2,000,000 mailboxes using 30 dovecot POP3 servers,10 dovecot proxy servers and we are really happy with your nice software, we expect a lot from 1.1 .

Hi, I have server with multiple virtual domains and this server also accepts mail for the local domain. I'm using postfix and have the following setup for a virtual sales(a)domain.com mapped to custsales@localhost I was wondering if there is a way to login with the virtual email address, for example sales(a)domain.com? I would also like to still be able to login with the local user as well. TIA, P

hi.... i have problems with convert plugin, because he delete the message maildir inbox (i dont know this is't right)... i set dovecot (Dovecot v1.0.7) to listen with pop and imap protocols... for example.... if user1 sends to user2 a msg via pop3 or imap, i can see the msg in user2 imap account, but when i read messages from user2 pop account, i see the message, but the message was deleted from imap account.... ¿:(? these are my settings about this issue: mail_location: maildir:/export/home/vmail/prueba/%n mail_plugins(imap): quota imap_quota convert mail_plugins(pop3): quota convert pop3_uidl_format(default): pop3_uidl_format(imap): pop3_uidl_format(pop3): %u plugin: quota: maildir convert_mail: mbox:~/mail:INBOX=/export/home/vmail/prueba/%u maybe i not understand yet wich if this plugin do :( thanks!!! :)

[Dovecot] Limiting the size of index files

Is there a way to limit the amount of disc space dovecot will use for its index cache? Other than putting that on a separate partition, I mean. We host our mail data on the file server, however, the index files are located on local discs on each of the mail servers and seem to grow without bounds. We're above 250M now and soon /var will run out of space. Thanks for any help.

Hello, When trying to run dovecot I am getting the following error :- Error: Error in configuration file /usr/local/etc/dovecot.conf line 923: Unknown section type (section changed at line 923) Fatal: Invalid configuration in /usr/local/etc/dovecot.conf The following section is at line 923. userdb static { args = uid=5000 gid=5000 home=/var/spool/vmail/%d/%n allow_all_users=yes } It seems to be that dovecot does'nt understand the section, but I configured with support for static userdb and this was confirmed before compilation took place. OS is Solaris 9. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks, David.

Hello, I am running OS: Ubuntu 6.06.1 LTS dovecot # 1.0.7 Beta Problem: I have all the email delivery set up with maildir. I currently have an account which has 297,261 emails in the Inbox. Here is a transcript of a telnet session with the server: * OK Dovecot ready. 110 login somelameuser lameuserspass 110 OK Logged in. 111 select inbox * FLAGS (\Answered \Flagged \Deleted \Seen \Draft) * OK [PERMANENTFLAGS (\Answered \Flagged \Deleted \Seen \Draft \*)] Flags permitted. * 297261 EXISTS * 149522 RECENT * OK [UNSEEN 1] First unseen. * OK [UIDVALIDITY 1188426666] UIDs valid * OK [UIDNEXT 301157] Predicted next UID 111 OK [READ-WRITE] Select completed. 112 copy 1:100 toBeProcessed Connection to host lost. I keep getting dropped... My original idea was to move the files via command prompt, but I wasn't sure if that was allowed, thought I might mess up the UIDs. How could I move the emails into other directories (folders) so that a regular IMAP conector can process the emails? I am trying to figure out an issue I have with the e-mails in my inbox showing up in Squirrelmail. I sometimes get (more often than I care for it to happen) e-mails which show up as new either many hours ago or days ago. I have one particular e-mail that in Squirrelmail is showing a data of Tue, 8:23PM. The received header of that e-mail shows: Received: from murphy.debian.org (murphy.debian.org [70.103.162.31]) by apple.stikman.com (8.14.1/8.14.1/Debian-9) with ESMTP id lA1JGTli011052 for <x>; Thu, 1 Nov 2007 12:16:35 -0700 And the date header of that e-mail shows: Date: Tue, 30 Oct 2007 23:23:11 -0400 I have tried changing the Squirrelmail setting under Display Settings which says Use Received Date. Both options, yes and no makes the mail display the same way in Squirrelmail. Is this a problem with the way Dovecot is sending the information to Squirrelmail, or is this a problem with the way Squirrelmail is interpreting the data from Dovecot? Dovecot version is 1.1beta5 Squirrelmail is version 1.4.11 Thanks for any help you can offer me. Jeff

All, Is anyone using iptables (recent module), or any other alternatives, to throttle the number of new imap or pop connections per minute? We have some applications that like to login every second to pull mail using imap, so we'd like to protect the entire dovecot server from these applications. We've already made the change over to high-perf mode, but we still need some type of denial of service protection. Any real-world data would be appreciated. Thanks!

[Dovecot] Just getting started

This is my first attempt at creating a mail server. I'm running postfix and dovecot on Fedora 7. So far the process has been very enlightening. I currently have the server able to send and receive messages for a domain from the server machine itself. In addition, I can SMTP from any client set up on the LAN by logging in. However, I cannot retrieve messages from remote clients on the LAN. Thunderbird reads "Connected to" {servername} across the bottom, then times out. I tried to telnet to port 110 on the server, and I no response, just hangs. Not sure where the problem lies.
