Next announcement will be for either v1.2.beta1 or v1.2.rc1. I'm hoping that v1.2 stabilizes pretty soon. There are no huge changes like there were in 0.99->1.0 or 1.0->1.1, so most of the bugs are probably related to new features. I'm already running v1.2 myself and it's gone through heavy stress testing with my imaptest tool, so I'm expecting it to be stable enough for real world testing with not-all-that-important servers. It's safe to jump between v1.1 and v1.2 at any time or even have them concurrently accessing the same mailboxes. Dovecot v1.2 has a lot of new IMAP extensions implemented. The biggest change comes from CONDSTORE extension which adds a new concept of "modification sequences" (modseq for short). Each message has a modseq that increases whenever a flag is changed or when the message is expunged. The client can keep track of the highest seen modseq and request only changes done since the modseq. See QRESYNC (RFC 5162) for more information. Dovecot starts keeping track of the modseqs only when the first "CONDSTORE/QRESYNC enabling command" is executed. Before that no disk space is used for modseqs. When modseqs are enabled dovecot.index file uses 8 bytes per message more space. Other implemented IMAP extensions are: ESEARCH, SEARCHRES, WITHIN, ID and CONTEXT=SEARCH. Added thread indexes to optimize IMAP THREAD command. Only the first half of threading is currently optimized, the rest will hopefully follow later. Added a non-standard X-REFERENCES2 threading algorithm where threads are sorted by their latest message instead of the thread root message. There is also no base subject merging. This may be renamed and become part of SEARCH=INTHREAD extension some day. SEARCH=INTHREAD is still a draft, but the INTHREAD search key is already implemented by Dovecot v1.2. This is mostly useful with virtual mailboxes. Virtual mailboxes: http://wiki.dovecot.org/Plugins/Virtual Then there are also some internal API changes which will make some things easier. For example lib-storage now allows handling multiple different users at the same time.

[Dovecot] pam_dovecotpw anybody?

Samba has pam_smbpass which is a PAM module that hooks into password changing, and changes the users' samba password (presumably used for NTLM auth?), when the users change their ordinary unix/linux password. http://gitweb.samba.org/?p=samba.git;a=tree;f=source3/pam_smbpass;h=c230a1b… It shouldn't bee too hard to take the code from here, combine it with dovecotpw and create a PAM module that changes the dovecot password in a way that can be used for cram-md5. Ideally it should read the /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf (whereever it is), and find the path of the passwd-file and use that. Has anyone else looked into doing something like this?

What is the best way to do a (server-side) backup of all mail in a user's mail? I have a feature-request for managesieve configure and Makefiles: they depend on dovecot sources as they are used for build process. I think it would be very nice to have not just --with-dovecot parameter in configure parameters, but also --with-dovecot-includes and --with-dovecot-libs. [Dovecot] imap processes eating IO

[Ignore the previous e-mail, I somehow sent it when I was trying to paste from clipboard] I recently migrated my dovecot/postfix setup to a new machine. After doing so, I have encountered a problem where imap processes get stuck in a loop eating loads of IO on the machine. Looking at the trace (snippet below), it looks like they are sitting and reading the inbox and other folders of certain users repeatedly. This seems to be triggered by the delivery of a new e-mail to the user's mailbox while they have an IMAP client connected, though I cannot say for sure. This had never happened before on the old machine. I'm certain more information would be useful, please let me know what I can provide to help! [Dovecot] antispam plugin problem

Hi people! (Especially Johannes, probably =) I recently switched to DSPAM + antispam plugin combination. Mostly I am happy but there is a problem with calling dspam-exec in order to relearn the messages. Moving messages to spam folder does not work, giving the error message 'Failed to call dspam' to client. I tried to add some debug output and here are the results: This is the output of debug("calling dspam: %s %s %s %s %s %s %s", argv[0], argv[1], argv[2], argv[3], argv[4], argv[5], argv[6]); (debugv(argv) does not produce any output for some reason) Oct 26 02:37:12 qqqqq imap: antispam: calling dspam: /usr/contrib/bin/dspam --source=error --class=spam --signature=490387db858421194018847 --user genie (null) This is the captured output of forked process Oct 26 02:37:12 qsar imap: antispam: dspam returned: ^APdata stack: Out of memory when allocating 1073741840 bytes If I understand correctly, this message is produced by dovecot before it should have launched dspam executable. I don't know why it needs 1GB of stack space for that. Changing dspam to dspamc does not help. Interestingly enough, launching 'sendmail' in mailtrain mode works ok. Hi Timo, Dovecot fails to start after upgrading from 1.1.4 to 1.1.6: Fatal: userdb didn't return a home directory, but mail location used it (%h): %h/mail:CONTROL=%h/control:INDEX=%h/index Error: imap dump-capability process returned 89 Fatal: Invalid configuration in /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf Adding a fake home directory to args in master-settings.c:get_imap_capability solved the problem for me, but there may be a more correct fix. [Dovecot] dovecot expire doesn't work (?)

Hi! I'm using dovecot-1.1.5 and trying to make the expire plugin work. What I've configured in dovecot.conf is the following: protocol imap,pop3,lda { mail_plugins = [...] expire } dict { expire = db:/var/dovecot/expire/expire.db } plugin { expire = spamassassin/SPAM 2 spamassassin/HAM 2 expire_dict = proxy::expire } I have a sieve rule, to copy certain messages to my "spamassassin/SPAM" folder. Then I want to expire those messages after 2 days (I think I've configured that under the plugin{} section in dovecot.conf). So the actual message saving is done by the dovecot's deliver, but I have the plugin loaded under the "protocol lda {}" section too. So I thought now I just have to wait 2 days, and run the expire-tool, and then it will expire the messages. Now I have three messages dated back to 10.25, but running the expire-tool outputs nothing. # dovecot --exec-mail ext /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/expire-tool --test Nothing in the logfiles, and nothing on the console.
