[Dovecot] Inbox inside the mail location

I recently had some scary experience with the Inbox being stored in the default /var/mail dir, and I believe it would be a better idea to keep the Inbox next to any other mail in the users $HOME. mail_location = mbox:~/.mail:INBOX=~/.mail/INBOX This is what I used for a quick test, and actually would love to use in production soon. Based on the test, it just does exactly what I want. :) However, I'd like to confirm what I see is how it is expected to work. Since the Inbox with this layout is is part of the ~/.mail dir just like any other mbox file (or subdir), I am concerned with getting a "second" Inbox mail folder in the client. I did not, which is great. So, is this expected behavior, and the Inbox mbox file actually being the Inbox and only the Inbox? Will it always be excluded from the list of IMAP mail folders? Also... Thanks for this great IMAP server! I migrated many moons ago, beginning with some 0.9x version I don't exactly recall, and it just works. Changes since rc29: * PAM: Lowercase the PAM service name when calling with "args = *". Linux PAM did this internally already, but at least BSD didn't. If your PAM file used to be in /etc/pam.d/IMAP or POP3 file you'll need to lowercase it now. + Send list of CA names to client when using ssl_verify_client_cert=yes. - IMAP: If message body started with line feed, it wasn't counted in BODY and BODYSTRUCTURE replies' line count field. - deliver didn't load plugins before chrooting

[Dovecot] fork bomb?

I'm running dovecot on my FreeBSD 6.0 VPS (just upgraded from FBSD 4.x) and today my server completely ran out of resources and the logs for all my services had errors like this one from dovecot: Apr 6 19:32:22 design1st dovecot: fork() failed: Resource temporarily unavailable eventually it got worse: Apr 6 21:19:34 design1st dovecot: fork() failed: Resource temporarily unavailable Apr 6 21:19:34 design1st dovecot: Temporary failure in creating login processes, slowing down for now Apr 6 21:19:34 design1st dovecot: Created login processes successfully, unstalling Apr 6 21:19:35 design1st dovecot: fork() failed: Resource temporarily unavailable Apr 6 21:19:35 design1st dovecot: Temporary failure in creating login processes, slowing down for now Apr 6 21:20:36 design1st dovecot: fork() failed: Resource temporarily unavailable Apr 6 21:21:36 design1st dovecot: fork() failed: Resource temporarily unavailable Eventually the entire server became unresponsive. Normally I wouldn't even think of blaming dovecot, but the hosting tech support said that when the checked out "top" there were crazy amounts of imap processes (maybe they just aren't used to dovecot's methods of dealing with logins etc) but they blamed "my imap server". Any way I can find out if it's really dovecot that's causing this? I recognize it might not be a dovecot issue, but it's the only hint i've got right now. .tim

[Dovecot] zlib plugin

Good evening, folks, Well, here at least. ;) I recently found out by accident about support for gzip compressed mbox files. While this is great for archives to keep wasting of space down to a minimum, unfortunately it is read only -- no support for rw access. Is implementing write access by any chance planned for future releases? Now for the spoiler. :) I mentioned, I found out about this feature "by accident", reading the NEWS for RC29. Talking to some guys on IRC I realized I am not the only one who found out about this by the release announcement. However, no one (around) was able to tell me how to use it, though interested too. I couldn't find any info in the docs, and google wasn't helpful either. But another careful look at the security announcement (especially the few words about it being a plugin not commonly used) got me going. So I figured, I'd mention it here -- I'm sure others have been wondering about this themself. And maybe google will pick up this post eventually. Of course, just sticking a gzipped mbox file inside your mail dir doesn't work... Inside the protocol imap section of the configuration, you need to enable the zlib plugin (and maybe set mail_plugin_dir, though the build time default should do). Basically, that's it -- once this is done, the naive first attempt magically works. ;) mail_plugins = zlib Of course, restart dovecot. Also, the gzipped mbox file needs to have a .gz suffix. This works for mbox files gzipped in one fell swoop just as well as incrementally concatenated single gzipped mails, as served by some mailing list servers as archives. Keep in mind though, that these archives are read only. With one notable exception: Read/Unread status is being updated and saved, as it will be stored in the index files in this case. Hi ! I am still a bit annoyed with the way that Sieve plugin handles multiple delivery into the same folder. For reference : http://www.dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2007-January/019029.html Summary : When a same message (same message-id) is to be delivered twice into the same mailbox, it is delivered twice while I think that the second one should be discarded. Here are a few test cases : - you subscribe to a few mailing lists on topic "X" and deliver all mails from those mailing lists in the same folder. You get twice the mails that are crossposted. - you subscribe to one mailing list and read it regulary so you don't care of receiving messages from this mailing list (you are in Cc when someone answers) in your INBOX. You match on To or Cc to put everything in the same folder. You get messages twice when you are put personally in Cc. - you place a forward from one account to two of your accounts (one is keeping backup, the other don't but delivers faster). You receive all messages twice. With procmail, I handle those (real) cases with formail. I can't with Sieve. I don't see any interest in receiving the same message twice into the same mailbox. Is it possible to maintain a list of recent message-id and mailbox couples to avoid to deliver again a message to the same mailbox ? -- Terminate input by end-of-file or marker, not by count. - The Elements of Programming Style (Kernighan & Plauger)

Help! I just noticed this error this morning, we have been getting a lot of these in rc28 and rc29, not in rc27 or before: Apr 6 07:22:52 karst dovecot: [ID 107833 mail.error] IMAP(jaearick): mbox file /var/mail/j/jaearick was modified while we were syncing, check your locking settings Pine coughed up an internal error, no core dump, and dovecot basically doubled the size of my mailbox by duplicating all of my messages again. What changed with file locking between rc27 and rc28 to cause this? How to fix? My setup: dovecot server is Solaris 10, with ZFS for home directories (where index files go). The mail server is also Solaris 10, /var/mail NFS mounted to the dovecot server (NFSv4, yes lockd is running). The /var/mail filesystem on the mail server is also ZFS. Hi all, I'm new to the list, so ... hello everybody :-) Let's go to the point... I'm implementing quota over imap support in my mail server, so since a number of days I'm tring to upgrade to the new 1.x version (debian sarge) ... After having a number of troubles using the debian backport packege I am now using the -rc28 package that I have built by myself... I installed libmysqlclient14 and compiled dovecot with the following configure options: ./configure --with-ssl=openssl \ --with-mysql \ --disable-ipv6 \ --with-cyrus-sasl2 \ --with-gssapi \ --with-deliver \ --host=$(DEB_HOST_GNU_TYPE) \ --build=$(DEB_BUILD_GNU_TYPE) \ --prefix=/usr \ --sysconfdir=/etc/dovecot \ --libexecdir=\$${prefix}/lib \ --localstatedir=/var \ --mandir=\$${prefix}/share/man \ --infodir=\$${prefix}/share/info \ --with-moduledir=\$${prefix}/lib/dovecot/modules as taken from the sarge-backports debian package and after having removed pgsql, ldap and ipv6 support, as I don't need them... The imap over quota seem to work perfectly, since I can see quota info in IMAP clients (and via telnet) the only thing I can't make work is the dict: storage for quota info!! It seems the dict{ .. } section in the dovecot.conf file is *totally* ignored: dict { quotadict = mysq:/etc/dovecot/dovecot-dict-quota.conf } As you can see I have a typo in the driver name, but no error nor error message is given ... I followed the wiki instruction about Quota/Dict and I have created the necessary table ... that is not filled of course .. Anybody can tell me if may be a compilation problem, a configuration one or a bug in the current dovecot release ?? [Dovecot] Mailbox isn't a valid mbox file

Keep getting this error within Squirrelmail (and other clients) on one particular user's mailbox file: ERROR: Could not complete request. Query: SELECT "INBOX.Backup" Reason Given: Mailbox isn't a valid mbox file I've snipped the first and last message off of it, still no love. mailserver# cat FILE | od -c | less 0000000 F r o m p r o m o t i o n s @ 0000020 e m e s s a g e . c i s c o . c So apparently there isn't a control character in the first message that'd be causing this either.
