[Dovecot] messages_count too large (2578 > 2566) Help!
by Rob Frohne 20 Dec '05

20 Dec '05

Hi, I'm having trouble as of about noon today. I noticed I wasn't getting any new messages in Thunderbird. I restarted it and still nothing. I looked at the log, and found nothing from dovecot for a long time (since perhaps noon today). I restarted dovecot, but still it didn't get me new mail. I finally removed dovecot.* in my Maildir folder and restarted dovecot. I'm using 1.0alpha4. Now I'm still not able to get the new mail, and I get the following messages: Nov 20 20:49:59 cubex-wwc-edu dovecot: imap-login: Login: user=<frohro>, method=plain, rip=172.17.128.191, lip=10.7.3.11 Nov 20 20:49:59 cubex-wwc-edu dovecot: imap(frohro): Effective uid=501, gid=20 Nov 20 20:49:59 cubex-wwc-edu dovecot: imap(frohro): maildir: data=/Users/frohro/Maildir Nov 20 20:49:59 cubex-wwc-edu dovecot: imap(frohro): maildir: root=/Users/frohro/Maildir, index=/Users/frohro/Maildir, control=, inbox= Nov 20 20:50:00 cubex-wwc-edu dovecot: imap(frohro): Corrupted index file /Users/frohro/Maildir/dovecot.index: messages_count too large (2578 > 2566) Nov 20 20:50:00 cubex-wwc-edu dovecot: imap(frohro): Corrupted index file /Users/frohro/Maildir/dovecot.index: messages_count too large (2578 > 2566) Nov 20 20:50:08 cubex-wwc-edu dovecot: imap(frohro): Corrupted index file /Users/frohro/Maildir/dovecot.index: messages_count too large (2588 > 2576) Nov 20 20:50:25 cubex-wwc-edu dovecot: imap-login: Login: user=<frohro>, method=plain, rip=172.17.128.191, lip=10.7.3.11 Nov 20 20:50:25 cubex-wwc-edu dovecot: imap(frohro): Effective uid=501, gid=20 Nov 20 20:50:25 cubex-wwc-edu dovecot: imap(frohro): maildir: data=/Users/frohro/Maildir Nov 20 20:50:25 cubex-wwc-edu dovecot: imap(frohro): maildir: root=/Users/frohro/Maildir, index=/Users/frohro/Maildir, control=, inbox= Nov 20 20:50:25 cubex-wwc-edu dovecot: imap(frohro): Corrupted index file /Users/frohro/Maildir/dovecot.index: messages_count too large (2588 > 2576) Nov 20 20:50:25 cubex-wwc-edu dovecot: imap(frohro): Corrupted index file /Users/frohro/Maildir/dovecot.index: messages_count too large (2588 > 2576) Nov 20 20:50:26 cubex-wwc-edu dovecot: imap(frohro): Corrupted index file /Users/frohro/Maildir/dovecot.index: messages_count too large (2588 > 2576) I guess I won't be able to read any answers to this in my mailbox, but I should be able to read the archive on the web. [Dovecot] Auto-expunge
by John Newman 20 Dec '05

20 Dec '05

Hi, For some time we've been intermittently experiencing a problem whereby dovecot often automatically expunges "deleted" messages. This has happened across several mailboxes. The problem is proving difficult to isolate as it's seemingly non-deterministic in nature. One commonality, however, is that the "auto-expunge" seems to occur with greater frequency on mailboxes with a larger of deleted messages. First off, does this sound any alarm bells for anybody else? Perhaps others have encountered this in the past? I've trolled the mailing list (and web) but cannot find any references to this occurring elsewhere. Additional Information: We have experienced this "bug" in 1.0-alpha3 and alpha4. Underlying dovecot we have a maildir, populated via Perl's Mail::Box::Maildir module. Many thanks for any assistance that can be offered. John.

[Dovecot] alpha5: assert and core
by Jeff A. Earickson 19 Dec '05

19 Dec '05

My setup: Solaris 9, dovecot built with gcc 4.0.2. Mailboxes on remote NFS file mount from another S9 box (mbox format), index files local disk. IMAP usage only. Dovecot build like so: VERSION=1.0.alpha5 CC=gcc CFLAGS="-g -O" CPPFLAGS=-I/opt/openssl/include \ LDFLAGS=-L/opt/openssl/lib \ ./configure --prefix=/opt/dovecot.$VERSION --with-ssl=openssl \ --with-ssldir=/opt/openssl/ssl > configure.out The assertion: Dec 16 14:59:54 emerald dovecot: [ID 107833 mail.error] imap(user): file message-body-search.c: line 414 (message_body_search_ctx): assertion failed: (input->v_offset == part->physical_pos + part->header_size.physical_size) Dec 16 14:59:58 emerald dovecot: [ID 107833 mail.error] imap(user): file message-body-search.c: line 414 (message_body_search_ctx): assertion failed: (input->v_offset == part->physical_pos + part->header_size.physical_size) (twice in four seconds). The gdb traceback and core dump analysis is attached. This is the only core from alpha5 in about a week's worth of production usage. Jeff Earickson Colby College

Obviously I have an account. This is Solaris 10. I have been tinkering with the /etc/pam.conf without success. Does anyone have a solution? I have this currently in the pam.conf. dovecot auth required pam_passwd_auth.so.1 try_first_pass dovecot account required pam_unix_account.so.1 I have tried: dovecot auth required pam_unix_account.so.1 nullok dovecot account required pam_unix_account.so.1 And this: dovecot auth required pam_unix_auth.so.1 nullok dovecot account required pam_unix_account.so.1 When trying an IMAP attempt at the command line, this is the log extract. dovecot: Dec 17 10:32:13 Info: Dovecot v1.0.alpha5 starting up dovecot: Dec 17 10:32:33 Info: auth(default): client in: AUTH 1 PLAIN service=IMAP lip=172.16.0.41 rip=172.16.0.41 resp=AG1kcGV0ZXJzAEhhY2tlcmphYzY3QA== dovecot: Dec 17 10:32:33 Info: auth(default): pam(myname(a)mydomain.com,172.16.0.41): pam_authenticate() failed: No account present for user dovecot: Dec 17 10:32:35 Info: auth(default): client out: FAIL 1 user=myname(a)mydomain.com dovecot: Dec 17 10:32:39 Info: imap-login: Aborted login: user=<myname(a)mydomain.com>, method=PLAIN, rip=172.16.0.41, lip=172.16.0.41 -- Best regards, Michael

[Dovecot] Re: dovecot Digest, Vol 32, Issue 42
by Daniel 17 Dec '05

If its too hard for them to setup the pop3 catch all, we can probably put some mapping in place to smtp froward mail to their server. This is more complex on our part so would prefer not to do it that way, but its an option and will require not setup on their part other than make sure their server does not accept mail for anyone other than our server. dovecot-request(a)dovecot.org wrote: > Send dovecot mailing list submissions to > dovecot(a)dovecot.org > > To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit > http://dovecot.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/dovecot > or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to > dovecot-request(a)dovecot.org > > You can reach the person managing the list at > dovecot-owner(a)dovecot.org > > When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific > than "Re: Contents of dovecot digest..." > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. [Dovecot] Two-phase delete/expunge ?
by Jan-Piet Mens 16 Dec '05

16 Dec '05

Is it possible to have messages which have been marked for deletion or which are to be expunged, moved into a "secret" directory on the IMAP server? The IMAP client would consider the message as deleted, but an administrator could easily restore single messages (without having to retrieve tapes) by moving the message back into inbox. I understand there are patches floating around somewhere enabling that for Cyrus, but I'd love to see Dovecot do that as well. Is anyone aware of such functionality? Thanks, -JP

[Dovecot] strange connection NG
by Yi Xuan 16 Dec '05

16 Dec '05

Dear all, I have a devocot server based on fedora core 3 in Japan. When my users are in Japan, there is no any problem reported.Devocot works very well. But when my users are in China, sometimes the following problem occured. Sometimes the user can not download mails, after that all connections attempt to server(e.g http/ssh) failed. the user has to close OutLook, and wait for about 10 minutes, then access the webmail to read mail. Maybe the POP NG is due to the network , but what is the possible reason of 10-minute other connection NG? Is there any solution? Because users in China share the same outside IP, when one user occures POP NG, all users occures server access NG, that is a big puzzle. Thanks in advance. Best regards,

[Dovecot] Patch: ioloop using kqueue/kevent for FreeBSD
by Vaclav Haisman 16 Dec '05

16 Dec '05

Hi, I would like to submit the attached patch. It implements IO loop using FreeBSD's kqueue/kevent syscalls. It is based on snapshot of CVS HEAD as of 2005-12-12. I could only give it limited testing on FreeBSD 5.4 but it works fine so far. Vaclav Haisman

[Dovecot] 1.0alpha5 released
by Timo Sirainen 16 Dec '05

16 Dec '05

We have now some new big features: - Beginnings of dbox mailbox format. It should work, but if you happen to delete/break index files, the mails aren't found again. So really not a good idea to use it for more than testing. - GSSAPI (Kerberos 5) support by Jelmer Vernooij with some fixes by pod(a)herald.ox.ac.uk - Added dictionary API to Dovecot, similar to what Postfix has. It can be used for getting/setting key=value pairs, which can be useful for many different purposes. For example it could be used to store mailbox metadata for ANNOTATEMORE extension. Implemented SQL backend for it. In future there should be berkeley DB backend at least. Also there could be some kind of proxy backend which would use UNIX socket to connect to dictionary server doing the actual work. This way each imap/lda process wouldn't have to connect to SQL server themself. - Quota plugin is now included. We also have now dictionary based quota support, which means the quota limits and values can be stored in SQL. However I haven't actually tested these changes yet, so there's a good chance the quota plugin doesn't actually work at all. - Created a new trash plugin which works only together with quota plugin. The point of it is to expunge mails from a list of configurable mailboxes whenever saving new mails would cause the account to go over quota. The oldest mails are expunged first, and only as many mails are expunged as is needed to save the new mail. For configuration it first looks up for ~/.dovecot.trash.conf, and then fallbacks to /etc/dovecot-trash.conf. The file format is "<priority> <mailbox name>". It's possible to have multiple mailboxes with same priority. Lower number = higher priority. This plugin is also currently untested. The plugins are currently installed as shared libraries to plugin directory. At some point I'll add a configure option to select which plugins to compile directly into binaries. Possibly even do it by default for some plugins (quota). And smaller new features: - If LDAP lookup fails because connection gets closed, try retrying it again after reconnect. This is however untested, hopefully didn't break LDAP code completely.. - %w variable in dovecot-auth contains password. Can be used to do eg.: password_query = select null as password from users where userid = '%u' and password = password('%w') - syslog_facility setting And fixes: - auth_cache was quite broken - adding keywords caused sometimes assert-crash - If login_greeting_capability = yes we could have sent the capability before dovecot-auth returned what auth mechanisms were available, forcing clients to use plaintext authentication - Lots of mbox fixes again.. - userdb prefetch wasn't supposed to be uncommented in dovecot-example.conf in alpha4. Comment it out if you don't need it. - Don't crash with "out of memory" in 64bit systems - IDLE command might have crashed when finishing itself if there were lots of external changes - pop3_reuse_xuidl setting wasn't actually working
