Dovecot 3.21.1 -> 2.4.0 SegFault
by Cata S 02 May '25

02 May '25

Hi guys, There seems to be some issue with Dovecot deployed on alpine. More specifically, the dovecot.config file is not properly read. I have run some debugging and the SegFault is returned in the function below: #0 0x000055555556779b in config_parsed_get_setting () No symbol table info available. #1 0x0000555555563708 in config_dump_full () No symbol table info available. #2 0x000055555555c814 in main () No symbol table info available. This was also addressed by alpine here: https://gitlab.alpinelinux.org/alpine/aports/-/issues/17050 Any idea what could be causing this? Thanks for looking into it, Cata

How to backup mdbox
by lutz.niederer＠gmx.net 30 Apr '25

30 Apr '25

Hi, dovecot with mdbox on zfs running fine and robust since one year now. Zfs and mdbox seem to make sense. What we do for backup currently is stop dovecot, take a snapshot and restart dovecot. That only takes a few seconds to complete. After that we have time to do the backup. Is that the correct way, or is there a better, preferred way to get the backup done? Is there a way to freeze dovecot while still keeping the clients happy? Some are thrown off and don't recover (namely outlook, even if it takes a few seconds only). We can live with that, but better would be better. Thanks and cheers, -lutzn

Sieve fails to find existing folder?
by Alexander Skwar 25 Apr '25

25 Apr '25

Hello I've got issues using filters. Although a filter matches a message, the message remains in the INBOX. In the log file a(a)skwar.xyz.sieve.log, I find this: sieve: info: started log at 2025-04-14 18:15:31 +0200. error: msgid=<1051036477.1870592.1744647326637(a)mail.yahoo.com>: fileinto action: failed to store into mailbox '🎗 Social Networks/🏔🚴 Draussen': Mailbox doesn't exist: 🎗 Social Networks/🏔🚴 Draussen. Yes, the folders are **really** named "🎗 Social Networks" and "🏔🚴 Draussen" 😜 I like emojis, makes it easier for me to find things again 🙂 The filter rule for this is: require ["regex","imap4flags","fileinto"]; if anyof (address :regex :comparator "i;octet" "from" ".*@(yahoo\\.com|bergportal\\.ch|freezetag\\.com|garmin\\.com|geocaching\\.com|komoot\\.de|munzee\\.com|quaeldich\\.de|spontacts\\.com|squadrats\\.com|strava\\.com|update\\.strava\\.com|velocity\\.ch|wandrer\\.earth)$", address :regex :comparator "i;octet" ["to", "cc"] "hiking-buddies@acc\\.alexs77\\.rodeo|carving\\.fleshed313@alexs77\\.foobar\\.vip|com\\+wandrer\\.earth@skwar\\.me|squadrats\\.com@acc\\.alexs77\\.rodeo", address :regex :comparator "i;octet" "from" "hikingbuddiesteam(a)gmail.com|email.meetup.com") { fileinto "🎗 Social Networks/🏔🚴 Draussen"; stop; } In this case, it matches on "<whatever>@yahoo.com". Why did it not find the folder? I created the folder and rule in SOGo 5.12.0 from mailcow 2025-03b. bd36093fccaa:/var/vmail/sieve# dovecot --version 2.3.21.1 (d492236fa0) Should the Emojis somehow be encoded, so that the filter would work? Cheers, Alexander

cgroupv2 privileged execution
by Matt Saladna 23 Apr '25

23 Apr '25

In similar vein to "[cgroup support]" from Jan 30, 2011 I'd like to add cgroupv2 support to Dovecot. With v2, moving processes is more restrictive in that groups can only have a single-writer and the process of the common ancestor cgroup between the losing and gaining group must have write privileges. So far as I understand: - Every hook (mail_user_created, mail_storage_created, etc) occurs after chroot + setuid - Wrapping imap or pop3 executables doesn't expose the userdb data in environment, this is done in the actual imap and pop3 processes respectively - Adding a script-login does export the correct userdb details but the pid isn't known. Since everything spawns under dovecot master, the only practical solution is to enumerate every imap or pop3 process owned by the gid to reassign to the new cgroup. This limits implementation to a plugin that solicits the pid to a separate daemon listening on a socket launched by Dovecot in mail_user_created hook. Ideally I would like for cgroup binding to occur before imap/pop3 binaries launch for cgroupv2 pid rejection to occur, although this seems impossible to achieve? - Matt In similar vein to "[cgroup support]" from Jan 30, 2011 I'd like to add cgroupv2 support to Dovecot. Android mail client capable of utilizing FTS?
by Alexander Skwar 22 Apr '25

22 Apr '25

Hello I enabled FTS Full Text Search using Tika in dovecot and have all the emails now reindexed. Using either "IMAP by hand" (ie via telnet or openssl s_client), SOGo webmail, or Thunderbird on macOS, I can search for and also find emails based on text which is only in a PDF attachment. Using Thunderbird or the now dead k-9, I'm not finding anything. Can someone maybe suggest an email client for Android which is able to find emails based on text in FTS? Technically, I guess it should do a "search TEXT "foo bar"" query. Dovecot migration to new server with namespace issues
by Gabriel Kaufmann | TYPOworx 22 Apr '25

Hello, I'm trying to migrate old ispconfig server with dovecot + postfix to a new modernized server. I'm having some trouble with dovecot doing what I want/need to reuse use my old configuration. I've been using maildir++. The new dovecot makes me some headcache as I cannot simply reuse the old configuration or INBOX folder. Any ideas how to get this fixed? My Maildir's & IMAP looked like this for the old system: Maildir/ <-- obviously not shown in IMAP :) INBOX/ Drafts/ Templates/ Sent/ Archives/ Trash On my old ispconfig server with older linux/dovecot version I simply had this configuration: > namespace inbox { > inbox = yes > > mailbox ".Drafts" { > auto = no > special_use = \Drafts > } > mailbox Drafts { > auto = subscribe > special_use = \Drafts > } > > mailbox ".Junk" { > auto = no > special_use = \Junk > } > mailbox Spam { > auto = no > special_use = \Junk > } > mailbox Junk { > auto = subscribe > special_use = \Junk > } > > mailbox ".Trash" { > auto = no > special_use = \Trash > } > mailbox Trash { > auto = subscribe > special_use = \Trash > } > > mailbox Archives { > auto = subscribe > special_use = \Archive > } > } My approach to make this work using dovecot 2.3.21 got me in some trouble. Obviously new dovecot wants to store INBOX-Date in Maildir/{cur,tmp,new} instead of Maildir/INBOX? I've tried with this configuration - which at least correctly shows INBOX-Data now in my IMAP, but I also have some troubles: Maildir/ <-- obviously not shown in IMAP :) INBOX/ My Custom Folder/ Drafts/ <------------- repeating from imap-root subscribing it there duplicates it here :-/ Templates/ Sent/ Archives/ Trash .Trash Drafts/ Templates/ Sent/ Archives/ Trash .Trash (somehow same than Trash, only want Trash non-dotted) New configuration approach: > mail_location = > maildir:/var/vmail/%d/%n/Maildir/:LAYOUT=fs:DIRNAME=/:maildir_copy_with_hardlinks=yes > maildir_copy_with_hardlinks = yes > > plugin { > mailbox_alias_junk1 = Junk > mailbox_alias_junk2 = Spam > > mailbox_alias_sent_de = Gesendet > } > > namespace { > type = private > separator = / > > location = > maildir:/var/vmail/%d/%n/Maildir/:LAYOUT=fs:DIRNAME=/:LISTINDEX= > > inbox = no > list = yes > subscriptions = yes > > > mailbox .Junk { > auto = no > special_use = \Junk > } > > mailbox .Drafts { > auto = no > special_use = \Drafts > } > > mailbox .Trash { > auto = no > special_use = \Trash > } > > mailbox .Sent { > auto = no > special_use = \Sent > } > > mailbox .Archives { > auto = no > special_use = \Archive > } > > mailbox .Templates { > auto = no > } > } > > namespace inbox { > type = private > separator = / > prefix = INBOX/ > > location = maildir:/var/vmail/%d/%n/Maildir/:LAYOUT=fs:DIRNAME=/ > > inbox = yes > list = yes > hidden = yes > subscriptions = yes > > mailbox .Junk { > auto = no > } > > mailbox .Drafts { > auto = no > } > > mailbox .Trash { > auto = no > } > > mailbox .Sent { > auto = no > } > > mailbox .Archives { > auto = no > } > > mailbox .Templates { > auto = no > } > } -- Best regards Gabriel Kaufmann Hello, I'm trying to migrate old ispconfig server with dovecot + postfix to a new modernized server. Bash automation for Dovecot

Hello, I developed a Bash script to automate the installation and configuration of open-source software (i.e., launchpad.net/linuxha) I want to make sure the syntax of this script is perfect so I can use it as a teaching tool to educate people about Linux. I need to know if there is anything misconfigured with my Dovecot syntax. If you find a bug in LinuxHA, please submit a bug report to bugs.launchpad.net/linuxha/+filebug.
