Version: Dovecot v1.1.rc3 OS: CentOS 5 running in OpenVZ CPU: x86_64 Was running fine with maildir and decided to get dbox a try. Test user created with a dbox mailstore backend and when a client logs in that tries to run a getquotaroot imap command the process SIGSEGV's. Have been able to narrow it down to dbox crashing against dict quota as well as dirsize. [Dovecot] Bug in db-ldap.c with Dovecot1.1rc3

If using LDAP as a userdb with a "quota_rule" configured, the order of the LDAP entry can distort userdb results, depending on where the quota attribute is found. For instance, with this "dovecot-ldap.conf" snippet: user_attrs = homeDirectory=home,uidNumber=uid,gidNumber=gid,quotaKb=quota_rule=*:storage=%$ And this example LDAP entry: dn: uid=testuser,ou=people,dc=domain.com uid: testuser homeDirectory: /mail/testuser gidNumber: 100 cn: testuser quotaKb: 20480 uidNumber: 121212 When db_ldap_result_iterate_next_all() runs, "quotaKb" is encountered, which causes "ctx->template" to be set. On the next iteration, "uidNumber" is encountered, but "ctx->template" is still set, causing the "uid" value to be prepended with "*:storage=". This is reflected by an error in the log as: Invalid UID value '*:storage=121212' This can be fixed by adding a line after 1118 to src/auth/db-ldap.c: ctx->template = NULL; Hope this is helpful to someone, -Rich

[Dovecot] public folders fchown error

I was hoping this would be the right place to look for some help, I cannot make public folders get the right permissions. I continually get the fchown error in logs, and have googled high an low to find multiple solutions that do not work for me. I'm using maildir. I have sendmail with postfix distributing my mail. I created maildir's in each users personal directory. I then thought it would be neat to set up a public folder that people could dump spam and ham into, then have a cron script go through the directory and automatically sort it for bayes. However, when I put a file in the public folder, the permissions do not seem to work. I've put a dovecot-shared file with root.mail permissions, 660, in just about every directory (all the public folder directories, and every personal user's control and index location), I've chmod'd to 777 each file and folder to test, etc, and no matter what, the dovecot.index.tmp in the user's index folder comes through with their permissions, and this error shows up. Am I thinking this is something different then what it is or am I completely off base? [Dovecot] Setting for deleting old messages from Trash?

Hi. Just switched to Dovecot from Courier last week and have been very pleased so far. The conversion was extremely painless, and I only hit a few small configuration issues before I was able to get the server up and running. Since then, I've been quite pleased - Dovecot's been very stable, and a good bit faster than courier as well. However, there's one nice feature from courier that I used to use that it doesn't seem like Dovecot provides. Wanted to see if that was indeed the case and, if so, if there was any workaround. In Courier, there was a setting whereby the server would automatically delete messages in the Trash once they were of a certain age. (The default was 7 days.) However, looking through the dovecot.conf, it didn't appear that Dovecot had any comparable setting. Anyone know how I might achieve this with Dovecot? TIA, DR

[Dovecot] mbox with sub-folders and messages?

Hi, Is it possible to have dovecot configured to use mbox format and yet have folders that contains sub-folders and messages? I'm thinking of a simple setup where any files directory with extension .sbd are presented to the IMAP client without the extension. So if you have a mbox file named BOX01 and a directory name BOX01.sdb would show has one on the client side (note: that is the way Thunderbird keeps it's mail locally). I know that the Maildir format does the sub-folders+messages, but I'm not really interested by the one file per email. Richard

Hello all, I configured imap_client_workarounds = outlook-idle after a customers complaint (Windows Vista, Outlook 2007) and after a week, she reports me that the issue has never repeated. So it has worked for me. I am running 1.0.rc15 (as from the original post) on a Debian etch box. [Dovecot] Proxy Problems

Hi, I'm trying to use dovecot as a proxy as described on http://wiki.dovecot.org/PasswordDatabase/ExtraFields/Proxy but without much success. The problem is that when I send a IMAP login command dovecot is responding with "BYE Internal login failure. Refer to server log for more information." Can anyone help me shed light on this problem? [Dovecot] Using LDA with postfix and virtual users

Hi list, I have 7 virtual users in a sql database. I don't want any systemusers or local delivery using postfix. On the postfix side everything works fine as long as I use the 'local' delivery agent. But since I want to use dovecot's sieve functionality I set local_transport to dovecot. From now on Postfix seems to ignore local_* settings like local_recipient_maps. [Dovecot] Mailbox to maildir conversion

I just today wrote Yet Another Conversion Script. This one differs from the rest that I've seen in that it will generate a dovecot- uidlist index. I've done some testing, but not any absolutely extensive testing. It works well from what I've tried. Invocation is simple. You pass the script the maildir and the mailbox file and it parses the mailbox file. The index file is generated if there is at least one e-mail with an X-IMAP header which contains the last ID used and the IMAP UIDVALIDITY. My old mail setup was ipop3d + sendmail (now dovecot + postfix) and it had a DON'T DELETE THIS MESSAGE e-mail with the aforementioned X-IMAP header. This e-mail will not be saved in the maildir. All e-mails with an X-UID header will get an entry in the uidlist file. The script works with python 2.3 or later. I haven't tested it on pre-2.3 python versions as I don't have any installed. http://habnabit.org/mb2md.py.gz I can answer questions about it if needed. I'm also willing to try to add any suggested features.

Hi, I have installed latest Dovecot 1.0.13 on a FreeBSD 6.2 with XMail (www.xmailserver.org) It works OK except one thing: error on startup. After each reboot there are lots of such error: dovecot: Mar 28 08:54:38 Error: child 916 (login) returned error 89 dovecot: Mar 28 08:54:54 Error: imap-login: No authentication sockets found When I restart dovecot by running startup script /usr/local/etc/rc.d/dovecot.sh restart the problem disappears. I have to manually restart dovecot after each reboot. [Dovecot] Moving main inbox file from /var/mail to ~/mail

Hi list, I am using Dovecot version 1.0.10 in a Debian package. At the moment, i have the main INBOX of each user in /var/mail/%u and others mboxes in ~/mail/. Here is the line coming from my /etc/dovecot/dovecont.conf mail_location = mbox:~/mail:INBOX=/var/mail/%u I would like to move the main inbox in each home folder with the rest of the others mboxes. What should be the process ? Should i only tkahe the network down, update my conf file and move the inbox of every user ? Or do I have to do something different ? Hi! I'm using an acl to avoid deletion of .Trash messages, but I also have mail_log plugin enabled, but I found out some logs of deletion on info.log: deleted: uid=218, msgid=<200802150943.25163.alessio(a)skye.it>, box=Trash The message is still there, but maillog logged that it have been deleted. I believe that this issue is related to the order that plugins are executes, is there a way to change it? dovecot version 1.0.13-1 debian package. Thanks!

Hi, I just set up two machine.One is installed with AntiSpam Quarantine Management and Anti Spam components. However, another machine is installed as Mail Server (installed:OpenLDAP,pam,dovecot mail server,sendmail & squirrelmail). Both machine can run now. I want to do some testing now..i am using the client mail Netscape. My question is: 1. how can i create a user and try to send a mail in and out? (to test that the email server is working) 2.how can i test the antispam is working or not? (to test that wehther the spam will go into the AntiSpam QUarantine Management Hope to hear from your reply... As i am vry new to linux and antispam, mail thingie.... Appreciate your reply! Pegasus Mail 4.41 is an excellent client on Windows. It works fine with both Dovecot IMAP and POP3 (APOP, IMAP LOGIN commands only - no SASL). Responds to async events. Supports IMAP STARTTLS. Does not use IDLE - periodic CHECKs. Fast and sensible header caches, light on resources. Offline mode, but read-only, using cache (prefetch options available if body caching enabled, it's not by default to save disk space). Searching is still a bit slow, although it does its best to use IMAP substring searches when it's possible even though the folder metadata is apparently managed locally. Excellent configurability; includes semantics for the different types of separator, prefixes, and a choice of whether or not to support folders w/ messages or w/o in folders. Moves mails for trash; only purges from the Trash folder (expunge after every delete operation and don't provide end-user experience different than local folder management). Provides several tricks for faster IMAP access, one of which is to assume only the client is using the mailbox (they can all be turned off). Closed source. [Dovecot] Dovecot and kmail IMAP resources

For some time now I have been trying to get IMAP resources working on KMail. I have followed the docs from kde, but they tell how to configure cyrus IMAP, so I've had to learn as I went along. After a lot of help from the postfix list I now have a working sasl. The ability of the user 'groupware' to log in with PLAIN has been checked in a telnet session. Everything in KMail has been set up as in the documentation, but it doesn't work. Hi, I am a new linux user.I jz setting up a mail server.Downloaded & Configured the components:CentOS,OpenLDAP,pam,dovecotMailServer,s endmial,squireelmail etc.... But wehn i want to check whether it works or not, so i open up my clientmail, wchi is Netscape 7.2. in Edit > Mail & Newsgroups Account Setting > server setting... i had put the ip address for the machine... but error pop out: Could not connect to mail server 10.XX.XX.XXX;the connection was refused. what's wrong wth it??? how to check wthere the mail server work? my second question. Dovecot dead but subsys locked aft i typed: /etc/init.d/dovecot status, it shows:dovecot dead but subsys locked. [Dovecot] Using IMAP keywords instead of mailboxes for spam with dovecot-antispam

Hi, Some email clients, like Evolution, use IMAP keywords to flag spam instead of moving mail to dedicated spam mailbox. This is very useful, as false positives can be easily "moved" to original mailbox simply by removing $Junk keyword. I couldn't find a way how to integrate antispam software, like dspam, with dovecot, so that antispam automatically learns ham/spam. I have found Johannes's dovecot-antispam plugin. Unfortunatelly, it doesn't have IMAP keywords support, autolearn is based on folders. Is there any solution for this use case? Thanks, Jan

Now that it has succesfully released new packages for Timo's latest changes I have activated the new script. Greetings, i am using here FreeBSD 7.0-RELEASE amd64 with dovecot 1.0.13. Gssapi auth on our dovecot setup did not work for some time, so i wanted to fix it today. I run into an auth failure, where my mutt was not able to login. Also mutt was not able to login, i had a imap/mail2.physik-pool.tu-berlin.de principal in my credentials cache after an try. I can work around with a "ln -s /etc/mail.krb5.keytab /etc/krb5.keytab" to this. [Dovecot] IMAP - multi-simultaneous-user mail store

I'm finishing converting from POP to IMAP and I'm seeing some potentially powerful uses, but I wonder if my ideas aren't more abuses. I want to create 'multi-user' accounts that allow groups of users to archive and share emails with each other. For example, in the case of a sales department, emails from customers may have requests for new product features. I could create an IMAP storage for sales that allows the sales staff to copy these requests into a common email account. These could then be sorted and searched by the product development team to better determine what customers want where product development should go. Another example, a service/support group has some problem customers that frequently call multiple technicians for support. The service group can save all correspondence with this customer in a single location so they can better work together to provide support for this customer. The possibilities for sharing emails in groups seem endless to me, but it depends on if it's a 'use' or 'abuse' of the IMAP protocol, and if Dovecot in-particular is designed to be able to handle this. Thoughts?

[Dovecot] Converting from UW-IMAP to dovecot - odd client problems

Our installation currently uses an old version of UW-IMAP. Instead of upgrading to the latest version, we're in the process of testing dovecot 1.0.13 on a Solaris 9 machine (using a different set of network ports of course so both the old and new systems can coexist during testing). We've been asking selected users to switch from UW-IMAP to dovecot in order to test various clients and OSes with dovecot. On our system the inboxes are always on local disk, but the indexes and any folders may be on NFS or local disk (it has to do with how and where we added disk as our user population increased over time). Only a single server is ever used and I've made sure for our version of dovecot that the settings specified for NFS are as described in the Wiki article. We've noticed some oddities which we can't figure out: 1) When siwtching a Thunderbird user running on a Fedora system (latest version of Thunderbird) Thunderbird couldn't see his mail folders even when the appropriate checkbox (Server Settings -> Advanced -> Show Only Subscribed Folders) was unchecked. Clearing out the IMAP Server Directory setting seemed to fix this, but the very next day, the folders were gone again and we've been unable since to get Thunderbird to see them. Using the same version of Thunderbird, running on Mac OS X 10.5.2 yields no such problem. Another problem with this same user involved a test wherein we created a new mail folder and then deleted it. The deletion caused an error message to be displayed (inferior folders, etc) but on the Mac OS X version no such error occurred and the folder was deleted. Investigating the protocol traces for Thunderbird showed that in the error case, it attempted to rename the deleted folder as a subfolder of the Trash folder (thus generating the error message) but on the Mac OS X version, it actually deleted the folder (which would seem to make more sense). The settings pertaining to the Trash folder are the same on both clients. 2) When switching an Apple Mail.app user running on Mac OS X 10.4.11 (Tiger) at the latest patch level, things appeared to work fine, and then the user mentioned that no mail was showing up in her inbox. Closing and restarting Mail.app appeared to fix that temporarily. She normally keeps a large number of messages in her inbox (approximately 7000+) and receives a large number of messages each day (several hundred). In this case, the Postfix mail logs showed that mail was being received, and the procmail delivery log for this user showed that procmail was putting the mail in her inbox, yet Mail.app was not indicating the presence of new mail (until it was restarted). Also Mail.app became very very slow at startup and shutdown (taking several minutes as compared to a few seconds normally). We've had no problems so far with another Tiger Mail.app user (but his inbox is considerably smaller) and no problems yet with converting a Eudora user running under Windows, but this is a stumbling block in our efforts to convert to dovecot since we'd hoped to be able to switch users over fairly easily (just by changing the port address mostly). While these woud seem to be client problems at first glance, the common factor of course is dovecot. There are no problems with any of these clients using UW-IMAP. I'm hoping that perhaps there are some readers of this list that might have seen similar problems and know of solutions, or could point me to some ways of debugging these problems (with Thunderbird I can at least debug IMAP protocol exchanges, but since dovecot doesn't log IMAP exchanges for specific IPs and since the socket connections are all via STARTTLS I can't use tcpdump so I'm kind of at a loss for how to track these things down short of patching the dovecot code to put in tracing messages). Any suggestions would be appreciated (and would help us complete our conversion to dovecot). Michael Durket

Hello, I have recently changed imap from Courier-imap to dovecot because of serial problems with courier-imap, I have being forced to do it very quickly... and without extensives tests. I have 3 mails servers (freebsd based) behind a load balancer and a nfs mailstore on a netapp. On my first tests I have setup the index into some nfs shared mount, but it seems that some imap clients are going mad when deleting files (mostly because they do open some new imap connection and the index was not clean) so I have changed index to memory. This has fixed one of my problems. Now I have some strange problems is that NFS activity passed from about... 5mbps to more than 70Mpbs... Is there any reasons about that ? If you want to have postfix authentificate from the same Database as Dovecot, you need it, but otherwise I do not see no relation. Or do you installed some script, that checks mails for Groupware-related ones and act upon them immediately? I cannot help you with Postfix. For shared resources you'll need yet another, shared account or look into the ACL plugin. KOrganizer even supports imap URLs natively, I saw right now. [Dovecot] Missing folders after converting from Courier imap to dovecot

Hi, I?ve searched around for my problem but couldn?t find a solution. My setup: Centos 5.1 with postfix 2.5.1 (from source) and dovecot 1.0.10 (from source). I?m coming from an old Trustix 2.2 box with postfix 2.2.x and Courier imap with Maildir format mailboxes. For testing I?ve copied over some of the mailboxes from the old machine. After logging in to the new machine with Thunderbird only the incoming and trash folders appear in the Thunderbird sidebar all the rest are not showing up. When you send an email the sent folder appears with all mails this account has sent from the old machine, same with drafts etc. Access a folder directly and it will appear with all it?s content. This is some kind of nasty if you have to do this for several hundred folders. I?ve tried to fix the problem by changing the namespace private parameter "prefix" to ".". Also tried to rename courierimapuiddb to dovecot-uidlist. Both tricks don?t work. Unfortunately I can?t find the mentioned courier-dovecot-migrate.pl, maybe this would help... Any help and suggestion would be welcome. Best regards, Mike

[Dovecot] problems with postfix->procmail->deliver

Hi all. I'm relatively new to Dovecot, but I really like what I'm seeing so far. I have one problem that I was hoping you could help me with though. I use Postfix for my mail server, then pass that on to procmail for filtering, and finally to deliver to put the mail in the appropriate Maildir folder. However, this isn't working. Postfix passes the mail to procmail correctly, but procmail is failing when it tries to call deliver. My system-wide procmailrc matches the lower one shown here: http://wiki.dovecot.org/procmail?highlight=%28procmail%29 which uses deliver. Hi everyone! I want to manage mail server resource part (like it can CGP) and with it I have one question. Is any way to limit overall max simultaneous connections to imap/pop3 server from one(each) host, except use iptables/ipfw and so on? Like a patch to dovecot or, maybe, it can be released in future versions? I know about mail_max_userip_connections in dovecot 1.1 but it can't limit hosts this way. Thank you.
