But really, all this leads is that admin has to detect the dovecot termination and simply go and restart it manually -- after some bad thoughts. I think that a config option to restart silently (or simply kill all connected imap/pop3 instances) would be quite reasonable. Basically it is the only thing I don't like in Dovecot... and was even planning to hack the time check out of the code =)) Best wishes Eugene

Hi, Wondering if anyone could give some indication as to where to look for the cause of the following error messages. These error messages seem to occur at about the time when users are having problems logging in. Jun 8 10:33:19 host dovecot: auth(default): Master request xxxx.xxxx not found Using ldap for authentication and auth_cache is enabled, not sure if that matters. Thank you! -- Eric L. Sammons, RHCE

[Dovecot] Resync quota to mysql script
by Oli Schacher 09 Jun '09

09 Jun '09

I changed some quota options in my dovecot config (eg. excluded folders) but afaik this only affects new mail and there is no magic command to recalculate the quota (or is there?). So I wrote this little python script to do this, maybe someone finds it useful. It can output the sql statements (dovecot 1.0/1.1 and 1.2 format) or just print out quota usage to console. Download at : http://wgwh.ch/dovecot/quotasync.py , run-at-own-risk and do-whith-the-code-what-you-want applies. # cd /path/to/a/Maildir # quotasync.py INBOX : 21 messages 516739 bytes .postfix : 982 messages 7572888 bytes .bn_archiv : 77 messages 2092454 bytes .python : 2748 messages 19877135 bytes .testfolder.subfolder1.subsubfolder1 : 2 messages 19443 bytes .testfolder.subfolder2 : 1 messages 9044 bytes .testfolder : 0 messages 0 bytes .Trash : 146 messages 1702297 bytes .Drafts : 0 messages 0 bytes .Sent : 0 messages 0 bytes .Spam : 2459 messages 16152165 bytes .testfolder.subfolder1 : 4 messages 13359 bytes ------------------- TOTAL: 6440 messages 47955524 bytes Example mysql output, dovecot 1.2 format: # quotasync.py -o mysql -a user(a)domain.com INSERT INTO quota (username, bytes, messages) VALUES ('user(a)domain.com',47963905,6441) ON DUPLICATE KEY UPDATE bytes=47963905,messages=6441; Example mysql output, dovecot 1.1 format, Spam folder excluded # quotasync.py -o mysql -a user(a)domain.com -d 1.1 -e .Spam INSERT INTO quota (username, path, current) VALUES ('user(a)domain.com','quota/messages',3982) ON DUPLICATE KEY UPDATE current=3982; INSERT INTO quota (username, path, current) VALUES ('user(a)domain.com','quota/storage',31811740) ON DUPLICATE KEY UPDATE current=31811740; You can pipe this output directly to mysql. eg.: quotasync.py -a user(a)domain.com -o mysql | mysql yourdatabase run quotasync.py --help to see all options

[Dovecot] Dovecot deliver with ACL plugin enabled truble

Hello folk, I have trouble running /usr/libexec/dovecot/deliver with ACL plugin enabled from my exim configurarion. This is the string from exim.conf, which request delivery to take place: command = /usr/libexec/dovecot/deliver -e -d $local_part@$domain In dovecot error-log I see this, when deliver tries to "put" message in users maildir: ==> /var/log/dovecot/dovecot-deliver.log <== deliver(user(a)domain.com): Jun 09 15:07:38 Info: Loading modules from directory: /usr/lib/dovecot/lda deliver(user(a)domain.com): Jun 09 15:07:38 Info: Module loaded: /usr/lib/dovecot/lda/lib01_acl_plugin.so deliver(user(a)domain.com): Jun 09 15:07:38 Info: Module loaded: /usr/lib/dovecot/lda/lib10_quota_plugin.so deliver(user(a)domain.com): Jun 09 15:07:38 Info: Module loaded: /usr/lib/dovecot/lda/lib11_trash_plugin.so deliver(user(a)domain.com): Jun 09 15:07:38 Info: Module loaded: /usr/lib/dovecot/lda/lib20_expire_plugin.so deliver(user(a)domain.com): Jun 09 15:07:38 Info: auth input: uid=8 deliver(user(a)domain.com): Jun 09 15:07:38 Info: auth input: gid=12 deliver(user(a)domain.com): Jun 09 15:07:38 Info: auth input: home=/var/mail/domain.com/user deliver(user(a)domain.com): Jun 09 15:07:38 Info: auth input: mail=maildir:/var/mail/domain.com/user/data deliver(user(a)domain.com): Jun 09 15:07:38 Info: Quota root: name=Mailbox quota backend=maildir args= deliver(user(a)domain.com): Jun 09 15:07:38 Info: Quota rule: root=Mailbox quota mailbox=* bytes=524288000 messages=0 deliver(user(a)domain.com): Jun 09 15:07:38 Info: Quota rule: root=Mailbox quota mailbox=Trash bytes=52428800 (10%) messages=0 deliver(user(a)domain.com): Jun 09 15:07:38 Info: maildir: data=/var/mail/domain.com/user/data deliver(user(a)domain.com): Jun 09 15:07:38 Info: maildir++: root=/var/mail/domain.com/user/data, index=, control=, inbox=/var/mail/domain.com/user/data deliver(user(a)domain.com): Jun 09 15:07:38 Info: acl: initializing backend with data: vfile deliver(user(a)domain.com): Jun 09 15:07:38 Info: acl: acl username = user(a)domain.com deliver(user(a)domain.com): Jun 09 15:07:38 Info: acl: owner = 1 deliver(user(a)domain.com): Jun 09 15:07:38 Info: acl vfile: Global ACL directory: (null) deliver(user(a)domain.com): Jun 09 15:07:38 Info: trash plugin: Added 'Spam' with priority 1 deliver(user(a)domain.com): Jun 09 15:07:38 Info: trash plugin: Added 'Trash' with priority 2 deliver(user(a)domain.com): Jun 09 15:07:38 Info: acl: initializing backend with data: vfile deliver(user(a)domain.com): Jun 09 15:07:38 Info: acl: acl username = user(a)domain.com deliver(user(a)domain.com): Jun 09 15:07:38 Info: acl: owner = 1 deliver(user(a)domain.com): Jun 09 15:07:38 Info: acl vfile: Global ACL directory: (null) deliver(user(a)domain.com): Jun 09 15:07:38 Fatal: mail_full_filesystem_access=yes is incompatible with ACLs In my current dovecot config-file option mail_full_filesystem_access is commented out. [Dovecot] Managesieve
by Thomas E. Deutsch 09 Jun '09

09 Jun '09

Hi I've a problem. I've built a new mailserver for our company based on dovecot (1.1.15). At the same time, our company's name has changed. The old mail addresses are forwarded to the new addresses. But I've a problem with sieve. It looks like the sieve filters are only working for the new addresses. But due to the change of the name was not long ago, most of the mails are still sent to the old addresses. What can I do to get filters also working for the old addresses? Configuration of managesieve: protocol managesieve { listen = *:2000 login_executable = /usr/lib/dovecot/managesieve-login mail_executable = /usr/lib/dovecot/managesieve sieve = /home/vmail/%Ld/%Ln/sieve/dovecot.sieve sieve_storage = /home/vmail/%Ld/%Ln/sieve managesieve_implementation_string = Cyrus timsieved v2.2.13 # mail_debug=yes } Regards, Thomas

[Dovecot] Login processes in Dovecot
by Scott Haneda 09 Jun '09

09 Jun '09

I will be deploying Dovecot on OS X shortly. I am looking for clarification on the limits imposed by OS X and sysctl [kern.maxproc]. I understand that it is defaulting to 532, but can be raised to 2500. I believe the OS uses around 100 or so, plus I will have other processes and shells at times. Does Dovecot use one process per user logged in? I find Apple Mail uses about 4 IMAP connections per account. I am not sure that my current number of mail users would be able to be supported on OS X even if I bump up to 2500. Does Dovecot use one process per user logged in differently based on IMAP versus POP? Perhaps this is something that can also be changed in Dovecot, if so, can someone point me to the docs about it, or explain the downsides of going against default behavior. If this is the case, what are my options? Does OS X server have a higher limit in their kernel, or is this across the board? Is it even possible to compile a kernel for OS X with this change, or does that generally mess things up pretty bad? FreeBSD and Solaris seem to have much higher limits, and certainly a much more approachable way of upping those limits. Does anyone know why OS X chose to set these so low, especially given that they do sell server based hardware with a server based OS. Thanks. -- Scott * If you contact me off list replace talklists@ with scott@ *

[Dovecot] Mailbox isn't a valid mbox file

Getting "Mailbox isn't a valid mbox file" on 1.2rc2 after transferring mail from an ancient 0.99.13 system. The first line of the file looks ok. Curiously, it's one of my archival folders of this list. Here's the first header from the top of the file: >From tss at iki.fi Sat May 1 21:48:17 2004 From: tss at iki.fi (Timo Sirainen) Date: Sat May 1 21:54:18 2004 Subject: [Dovecot] 1.0-test2 released Message-ID: <1083437297.21296.19.camel@hurina> X-IMAPbase: 1085322222 20128 Status: RO X-UID: 14065 Content-Length: 226989 X-Keywords: It would be nice if the code that verified the mailbox format would log details about what it disliked.

[Dovecot] General performance of RC5
by Joan 08 Jun '09

08 Jun '09

Hi all, Switiching to RC5, there is a visible decrease in performance to access via IMAP large accounts (>1G) with mutiple mailboxes per accounts. In RC4, there was no delay visible by a human when accessing locally. Now it takes up to 4 or 5 secs. (running on OpenSuse, mysql 5.1.35 for auth, dbox as back end) Anybody experienced also this ? Thanks Joan
