[Dovecot] Another numptie question - making maildirs for shared mailboxes.

Hi there, Sorry to have so much trouble with my Dovecot setup & to ask so many questions, but I'm having some problems with shared folders. I've read the thread at <http://dovecot.org/pipermail/dovecot/2005-January/006079.html> and added the following lines to /etc/dovecot.conf: namespace private { separator = / prefix = inbox = yes } namespace public { separator = / prefix = General/ location = maildir:/tmp/dovecot-test/ inbox = no hidden = no } So I create a directory /tmp/dovecot-test/ and an empty file /tmp/dovecot-test/dovecot-shared with liberal (777 & 666 respectively) permissions and then try to subscribe to the "General" folder in Outlook - I get a "failed to subscribe to the folder. The server responded `the mailbox doesn't exist: General`" error message, but cur, new & tmp are created in /tmp/dovecot-test. These subfolders are owned by the user that attempted to subscribe & have 700 permissions; chmod'ing them 777 makes no difference. Since "default_mail_env = maildir:%h/.maildir" in dovecot.conf I make a directory /tmp/dovecot-test/.maildir also containing cur, new, tmp & dovecot-shared. When I select "IMAP folders" in Outlook I am still unable to subscribe to "General" but am now able to subscribe to "General/maildir". The subscribed folder is shown in Outlook underneath the users' Inbox as a sub-folder of general, screenshot at <http://linux.stroller.uk.eu.org/DovecotSharedFolders.png> - see how I can't subscribe to "General" alone, but it is "brought in" by subscribing to "General/maildir"? If I try to copy a test message into General then, after a delay of a minute or so, I get "Can't move the items - this IMAP command could not be sent to the server before the connect was terminated"; if I try to copy the test message into General/maildir then I immediately get "Can't copy the items. The server responded: `Internal error occurred. Refer to server log for more information [2005-12-20 12:05:40]". I've tried tinkering with other directory structures under /tmp/dovecot-test/ with no success - can anyone suggest what I'm doing wrong, please? It's quite important to me that the "General" folder is a fairly high-level one - only one additional folder icon should show up for the users' shared mail. At one point I managed to create a folder General/General, but that's undesirable - the users wouldn't understand the concept of having a folder showing in Outlook that they can't write to, or which is only used as a container for another folder. (In any case, I believe I was still unable to write to it). I was about to say, "I know I could resolve this with the use of a symlink-type shared folder, but that's undesirable because I'd have to manually add the symlink for each user that's added to the system", but writing this it occurs to me that I could resolve that by adding the symlink to the the etc/skel/. Nevertheless, I see the namespaces approach as more elegant, as it allows for different user groups having different shared folders. I'd appreciate any advice - I suspect I'm just getting the directory hierarchies wrong, or the syntax of dovecot.conf wrong AGAIN! If anyone with a working shared folders setup could provide a copy of the appropriate section of dovecot.conf & a listing of the appropriate directories then I'd be EXTREMELY grateful. Stroller.

[Dovecot] Something other than dotlock for uidlist locking?

If I read the code correctly, only dotlocks are supported for locking of dovecot-uidlist. And I don't see any settings in the config file for it. As it turns out, dotlocks are very slow on my system, due to their implementation via hardlinks. Would it be possible to support other locking mechanisms for locking of the uidlist file? -jdb

[Dovecot] POP (dot) locks

Hello, just to soothe my paranoia from many years of qpopper usage, which enforces solitary access to a POP mailbox. Only one login per user is possible at the same time and if a session terminates w/o qpopper being properly notified it will remain locked for some time, 30 minutes by default. With dovecot (0.99.10.4) one can login multiple times (using POP, with IMAP of course this comes as no surprise :) and thus I presume this bit from the configuration: --- # Should we create dotlock file even when we want only a read-lock? Setting # this to yes hurts the performance when the mailbox is accessed simultaneously # by multiple processes, but it's needed for reliable reading if no other # locking methods are available. #mbox_read_dotlock = no --- means that if the only other reading accesses to a (mbox style in this case here) mailbox are via other dovecot processes everything will be fine? [Dovecot] .'s in folder names

Hi there We are trying to move over from 1 IMAP server to another, but the problem is dovecot does not allow .'s in folder names (and we have quite a number of people who do have .'s in their folder names (ie "www.domain stuff") Is there anyway of allowing dovecot to allow .'s in folder names? Hi. -alpha2 broke the retr-byte-count field of the pop3_logout_format with the following change: -Added %R (reverse string) and %H (hash string) variable modifiers. %R as modifier conflicts on expand with %R as retr-byte-count in pop3_logout_format resulting in expanded strings like: top=0/0, retr=1/ del=0/1, size=431 seen in -alpha3 -alpha4 cvs as of 04.11.2005 FreeBSD 5.4-R, both i386 and amd64 -- ./lxnt

hello, Sorry to jump straight in with a question, but I've searched the archive[0] and I'm pretty sure the answer's not there. I'm using dovecot to replace courier imap, so authentication is by vpopmail and the Maildirs are stored in the usual domains/domain/user/ Maildir. Everything seems to work very well, and setting it up has been easy, so thank you very much for that. I have only one problem left: %d is empty when interpolated into default_mail_env. I expect there's something obvious I'm doing wrong, but it's hard to tell because the wiki isn't always up to date (i'd be happy to update the vpopmail sections once this is working): Config has this [1]: default_mail_env = maildir:/home/vpopmail/domains/%d/%n/Maildir and i log in over imaps with the account i'm using for testing: username: sysadmin(a)spanner.org password: ... [Dovecot] Using mbox INBOX with Maildirs?

Thanks for everybody's tips on the mbox to maildirs converter. I was unaware that Maildirs was a common format not specific to dovecot, so I was searching using a dovecot keyword. I'm having this problem now with inboxes. I want to use maildirs, but my mail is delivered to an mbox. I can't seem to get dovecot to recognize the inbox location. Is something like: maildir:%h/Maildir:INBOX=/var/mail/%u impossible to use? What I'm trying to do is slowly merge people from mboxes to maildirs, so I have to use the passwd file per user maildirs settings with some sort of recognizeable inbox. I'm using sendmail as my mail server. Do I have to tell that to put the mail in the right inbox format? Thanks. __________________________________ Discover Yahoo!
