[Dovecot] Restoring older messages to new server?

I had Dovcot 1.x setup, all was working well (till...) Server got stuffed up and same Dovecot 1.x was rebuilt, put back in service, all's working well. I have recovered data from Maildirs messages from the old server, As some of the inboxes now have new messages, what is correct way to copy older messages from old server to new server ? (There are no duplicates, simply old messages from past server, data is physically on new server) Thanks for pointers, Voytek -- Swyped on my Motrix with K-9 Mail. Please excuse my brevity.

Hi, I am trying to setup a Gnus - Dovecot - Offlineimap - Webmail (Gmail / Fastmail) chain and cannot configure the correct behaviour. Any advice to get this working properly would be very appreciated! I have set up Offlineimap to synchronise two mail accounts into separate folders under ~/Maildir. After running Offlineimap, the folders look as below. Removing the prefix manually they can be seen again however (e.g. INBOX.subfolder -> subfolder). If I remove LAYOUT=fs in the dovecot config, nothing is seen at all, although the directories look like proper Maildirs! A second issue is that running Offlineimap a second time seems to work ok for gmail, but Fastmail complains that "cannot create directory '.'"? We're planning to upgrade our site from 1.2.17 to 2.1.x within the next few months, but we must ensure our ability to revert to 1.2.17 if problems arise. I don't expect our maildir storage would present a problem, but am less certain about 2.1.x index/control files remaining readable under 1.2.17. [Dovecot] Deliver quota-warning via director

Hi there, I'm using NFS with Dovecot 2.0.20 and would like to deliver a quota warning to the user using the LMTP director. I have configured quota warnings according to http://wiki2.dovecot.org/Quota/Configuration But it seems that lda delivers the mail directly to the local filesystem and is not using our lmtp director, which prevents NFS mailboxes from getting corrupted. Is there a way to tell lda to use LMTP or the director and ignore the quota while delivering the notification? Regards Daniel

We are working on migrating Dovecot 1.2.17 running on AIX 5.3 (believe it or not!) to Dovecot 2.0.13 running on Ubuntu. We have hundreds of users mboxes we will be migrating. My question is regarding the index files. Should we remove those after the migration, but before we open it up to users so Dovecot can create new ones? I did a test migration of a single user, and Dovecot detects the architecture change and put out some panic errors, corrupt files and backtrace messages in syslog on Ubuntu. The messages are shown below. If every user is going to generate these types of errors, I'm thinking maybe it makes sense to remove all the .imap directories and let Dovecot create new clean ones. I realize that may slow things down for awhile while Dovecot is rebuilding new files. Thanks for any info. Hello! I activated quota plugin { quota = maildir:User quota quota_rule = *:storage=1GB # 10% of 1GB = 100MB quota_rule2 = Trash:storage=+10%% } But when I want to do per user quota in the passwd-file ...vhosts/anup.de/anmeyer::userdb_mail=maildir:~/userdb_quota_rule=*:bytes=10G I get this in the logfile and can't login: Jun 08 22:25:52 imap(anmeyer(a)anup.de): Error: user anmeyer(a)anup.de: Initialization failed: Initializing mail storage from mail_location setting failed: Unknown setting: bytes Jun 08 22:25:52 imap(anmeyer(a)anup.de): Error: Invalid user settings. Hi, I've been reading doc at http://wiki2.dovecot.org/Director to configure my servers. My question is regarding configuration of doveadm server. I have configured both, director and backend servers, as described in that doc, but I don't know how to run doveadm commands in director servers. doveadm is working, because I can run commands, but they are executed in local (director) server. For example: root@myotis40:/etc/dovecot/conf.d# doveadm director status mail server ip vhosts users 155.54.211.169 100 1 but doveadm who seems to be executed just in local: (backend server) root@myotis30:/etc/dovecot/conf.d# doveadm who username # proto (pids) (ips) angel.luis 2 imap (11931 11936) (155.54.67.5) (director server) root@myotis40:/etc/dovecot/conf.d# doveadm who username # proto (pids) (ips) And another question about this... what is the local config option? Hello, I am configuring a dovecot imap/pop servers with a dovecot director in front of them. Because I am using director proxy, connections in the backends are show as coming from director IPs. Is there any way to configure director (or backends) so the backends know (and report) the original IP instead of the director IP?

Hi, I'm trying getting NTLM auth working against AD in my Dovecot 2.0.15. I'm getting the following error: Jun 08 14:18:11 auth: Info: winbind(?,10.44.3.151): user not authenticated: NT_STATUS_UNSUCCESSFUL "wbinfo -u" reports all the users of the domain and "ntlm_auth --username=%name% --domain="%domain%" gets authenticated successfully. Hello, If disk space and bandwidth are affordable (and from your setup it seems that they are affordable as you have everything locally) I would split the mail storage completely and use replication in between n-master servers (n=2 for your case). The replication is not yet fully tested, but Timo is actively working on this feature. The fear of lossing the imap session does not make sense (at least to me) as the client will reconnect automatically in the background. Like this you have no SPOF and no split-brain and you get the flexibility (if needed) to geographically distribute your servers in the the future. Keep each server with its own ip, connect to them via DNS (round robin etc etc). We are currently experimenting with a setup similar to this one, but with geographically distributed servers (trans-continental) (bandwidth limited and high cost). Hello folks, This morning I tried to open an old archive mail folder using Mutt. However, while fetching headers it aborted. (the folder apparently has a lot more files with incorrect sizes). My question here is: Why does dovecot abort? Isn't the issue fixed after the rename? Also: The files are not corrupted or unreadable, reading them through the commandline works fine. I've looked through my backups and saw that at least half a year ago this mismatch in size was already present. I've been running dovecot for quite a while, so the cause of this size mismatch might very well be a issue in an older version of dovecot / my configuration. Right now I'm running dovecot 2.1.6, but I've been running the v1.2 version for quite a while before that. Is this something that can be improved in dovecot so it doesn't abort after 1 rename? (of course I could script a rename operation, but that seems like a workaround to me) Thanks for reading. Wouter. [Dovecot] 2.1.7 altmove not working

Hi list, I've just set up a 2.1.7 server, and have migrated a couple of accounts across from a 2.0.15 server, keeping the old configs. I have a strange problem on the new box in that altmove just doesn't work. I have my main storage under /home/email, indexes under /home/indexes and ALT under /home/email_archive. When I run the altmove command, the following broken symlink is created in /home/email/integrafin.co.uk/acrow: lrwxrwxrwx. 1 email email 54 Jun 8 10:46 dbox-alt-root -> /home/email_archive/integrafin.co.uk/a/acrow/mailboxes But nothing is created in the archive other than the empty directory: /home/email_archive/integrafin.co.uk/a/acrow. My mail_location is: mail_location = mdbox:/home/email/%d/%n:INDEX=/home/indexes/%d/%1n/%n:ALT=/home/email_archive/%d/%1n/%n This worked perfectly on the older server. I have attached my doveconf -a output. Any help much appreciated. Regards Alex

hello list, i need help. dovecot dont look into my virtual_alias_maps . i set via postzfixadmin an alias postmaster(a)domain.tld to newmail(a)domainother.tld. when i send mails to postmaster(a)domain.tld mails are rejected. dovecot authworker tells me in log: user unknown. but i can request the data via postmap -v -q postmaster(a)domain.tld mysql:/etc/postfix/mysql_virtual_alias.cf and get result "newmail(a)domainother.tld". any ideas, hwo to get dovecot to look into my alias maps? marko

Hello Everyone, I saw the text about the change and needing to define an inbox namespace. Everything seems to work fine except doveadm. I get the following from a cronjob that has worked well for years now. doveadm(account(a)example.com): Error: Syncing mailbox TRASH failed: Mailbox doesn't exist: TRASH doveadm(account(a)example.com): Error: Syncing mailbox TRASH failed: Mailbox doesn't exist: TRASH doveadm(account(a)example.com): Error: Syncing mailbox TRASH failed: Mailbox doesn't exist: TRASH The cronjob is: 1 4 * * * doveadm expunge -A mailbox TRASH SAVEDBEFORE 30D What is the problem? hello, in howto for gentoo i found this: To tell Postfix about the maps that you've just set up, add the following (substituting mysql for pgsql if you're on PostgreSQL) to the bottom of /etc/postfix/main.cf: virtual_alias_maps = mysql:/etc/postfix/sql_virtual_alias_maps.cf virtual_mailbox_domains = mysql:/etc/postfix/sql_virtual_domain_maps.cf virtual_mailbox_maps = mysql:/etc/postfix/sql_virtual_mailbox_maps.cf Tip: Because this is using the Dovecot's LDA, all results from virtual_mailbox_maps are ignored beyond checking if they exist. I added in the mysql db an alias postmaster(a)domainn.tld that should be forwarded to name(a)domainn.tld. The tip above tells me when using dovecot lda the virtual_alias_maps is ignored by dovecot. now when i send a mail to postmaster(a)domainn.tld the mail is not transported to name(a)domainn.tld. in logfile i see this: dovecot: auth-worker: sql(postmaster(a)zbfmail.de): Unknown user how can i tell dovecot to also use the virtual_alias_maps? thank you marko

Hi. Seems it's a bug in dovecot auth. I have FreeBSD 8.1-RELEASE-p1 and I tried 1.2.17 and 2.1.7 versions of Dovecot, and still no luck. The problem: when I set in dovecot-ldap.conf: base = CN=Users,DC=domain,DC=local everything works fine. [Dovecot] Email auto purging applied to all mail folders

Hello, Is it possible to have this done not only for spam and trash folder but lets say like the user inbox and any user created mail folders too? My ultimate goal is to have a way to automate the email deletion process of emails stored in the user inbox or mail folders when it reaches a specified date. My boss wants to force users to keep emails only a month old anything beyond that will be deleted. Has anyone done this using dovecot and are there any guides available? I am also open to suggestions for commercial solutions but so far searching online for solutions only comes up with email archiving. The dovecot version I have installed is version 2.0.19. [Dovecot] best practises for mail systems

hello! Can someone point me to some best practices in building high-available scalable mail system or! share your own success stories. I've read article in LJ "Building a Scalable High-Availability E-Mail System with Active Directory and More" but it seemed to be outdated and there's a single point of failure (Master node). What I want to achieve: high-available, horizontaly scalable, with no single point of failure mail solution. Available hardware: intel mfsys25 modular server with 2 storage controllers, 2 switches, 4 power supply blocks with - 2 blade-servers in mfsys with: 2xIntel Xeon E5620 @ 2.40GHz with 8 cores each - promise vtrak e610s (2 storage controllers, 2 power supply blocks) - 6x 2TB SATA Hitachi HDS72302 We decided to go for KVM virtualization and glusterfs for live migration for vm image but that's not what this is all about :) We installed centos on host systems. for now while we could think of two ways to go: The first way (currently at testing stage): On each host system we created one VM and passed through 3x2TB disks into it. In guests vms on top of this disks we made XFS and fired up glusterfs with distributed replicated volumes for our mailstorage. so it looks like this: vm1 replicate vm2 disk1 ------------> disk4 disk2 ------------> disk5 disk3 ------------> disk6 in each vm we mounted glusterfs and pointed dovecot to that dir for mail creation (as ltmp) and imap4 user access. also we use exim as smtp. So, with glusterfs as mailstorage we can go for LVS to load balancing for exim and dovecot. so wherenever one of host systems (hence one of mail vms) goes down, users don't notice that 'cause LVS points them to working smtp and imap4 servers and they get their mail 'cause of glusterfs. Pros: - high-available - horizontaly scalable - with no single point of failure Cons: - not quite sure if glusterfs is production ready solution 'cause I've experienced split-brains during setting it up - IO performance issue. Though we didn't yet run any io tests, but glusterfs uses fuse to mount on clients. And guys on #gluster told me writing to the glusterfs mount will not be strictly local io. The second way: split up the users mail with: two back-end VMs each other on DIFFERENT host system with - fat mailstorage with raid1+linear mode (mdadm)+XFS - dovecot/exim-back-ends and two VMs for nginx-based proxy servers for imap4 and smtp - nginx can redirect user to right back-end through HTTP-php-based logic. Pros: - we split up not only load for exim/dovecot but users mail IOs too - no split-brains Cons: - If one of the host systems (hence one of back-end VMs with storage) goes down, half of our users is unhappy P.S. Sorry if this place is way wrong to ask for such things.

Please forgive my newbie post but this has me stumped. I've been a happy Dovecot 0.X and 1.X admin for years but something in my first 2.X configuration is oddly broken. Im trying to figure out how to get dovecot to deliver to my mail_location (example: /opt/imapdata/j/jeff/INBOX/inbox) AND work with squirrelmail. Ive worked on this for hours reading the docs etc with no luck so far. I get dovecot-lda to deliver to: /opt/imapdata/j/jeff/INBOX/inbox but when I use squirrelmail, I see the following in the log: dovecot: imap(jeff): Debug: Effective uid=1006, gid=999, home=/opt/imapdata/j/jeff/INBOX/inbox dovecot: imap(jeff): Error: chdir(/opt/imapdata/j/jeff/INBOX/inbox) failed: Not a directory dovecot: imap(jeff): Debug: Namespace : type=private, prefix=INBOX/, sep=/, inbox=yes, hidden=no, list=yes, subscriptions=yes location=maildir:/opt/imapdata/j/jeff:INBOX=/opt/imapdata/j/jeff/INBOX:LAYOUT=fs:DIRNAME=mmDIR:INDEX=~/indexes It complains that 'inbox' isnt a directory, but I want it to use: /opt/imapdata/j/jeff/INBOX What parameter do I need to tweak to get this to work? Ive tried the 'folder options' in squirrelmail but that doesnt appear to have any effect here (or at least at this point in my testing). It seems that the only parameter to tweak is 'mail_location' which Im having no luck getting to work correctly. Also namespace may play a part but every combination Ive tried does not result in getting it work thus far. On a sidenote when I send more than 1 email, it doesnt seem to honor 'maildir', it seems its doing 'mbox' instead? I get one flat file. Helo, I'm using Dovecot 2.1.1 with Postfix 2.3.3. I've enabled the quota plugin, so that Dovecot LDA reject e-mails, when user's mailbox is out of space. By default, when mailbox is near quota, and someone tries to send huge message, a reply is automatically send to the sender. It's being send from postmaster named as Mail Delivery Subsystem. And here is my question: Is there some way to customize that auto-reply, so that it is not only being send to the sender but also to recipient gets some notice about failed attempt ? I've also noticed, that this reply has attachment, which is rejected message, but it appears to be empty. Can I configure Dovecot to send back whole rejected message ? Regards malloc4k

[Dovecot] Vacation stopped working

Hi, I'm sure that it WAS working, but I can't guarantee... On a system with dovecot 2.0.16 and dovecot-pigeonhole-2.0_0.2.5. Today a user reported that vacation autoreponse did not work for him. [Dovecot] Exposing global (default) sieve script through Managesieve

Hi folks, I'm setting up a dovecot server with managesieve support. I'd like to offer spamfiltering through a Sieve script to my users by default, but still allow them to modify the filtering rules through Managesieve. I found the sieve_global_path configuration option, which seems perfect for what I want. I can configure a default script there, which will work for all users until they set upload their own sieve script using managesieve. However, when configured like this, the user experience isn't quite perfect. When users open the managesieve interface on their client, there is no trace of the default filters, so users might think the spamfiltering is done in some other manner. Now, when they create a filtering rule (e.g., to sort out mail to mailing lists), that rule will overwrite the default spamfiltering rule causing all the spam to spill into the user's mailbox. I'm afraid that most users won't realize they have to manually recreate the spamfiltering rule to fix this. Also, they might not know how to write the rule, even if they do... I've considered a few existing ways to fix this: - Use sieve_before / sieve_after to make sure that the default script is always executed, in addition to any user-supplied scripts. This removes the surprise, but removes the option for users to tweak the spamfiltering rules. - Don't use sieve_global_path, but instead distribute the default script to each user's homedir on user creation. This prevents making changes to the default script for existing users and in my setup, user creation and (mail)homedir creation are nicely separated through an LDAP directory, I'd rather not go this route. - When using the Roundcube webmail application as the IMAP client, I can point Roundcube at the default sieve script. Now, when Roundcube sees there are no scripts through ManageSieve, it shows a (fake) "default" script with the correct contents. As soon as the user changes this script or creates a new script, it is actually uploaded to Dovecot, causing the edited script to be used instead of the global script. This option has the user experience I'm looking for, but having this out-of-band connection from Roundcube to the default script configured with dovecot is ugly (and tricky, since these run on different hosts in my setup). The biggest problem is of course that this only works for Roundcube, not for any other IMAP client my users might use. So, I was wondering: Wouldn't it make sense for the managesieve plugin to do something similar to roundcube: When the user has no sieve script configured, let it fake a single "default" script, showing the contents of the global script? Since the ManageSieve protocol doesn't seem to support any way to flag this situation, it would be fooling the clients a bit, but I'm not sure if that's really a problem. While the user has not script named "default" in his sieve_dir: - include a script called "default" in the LISTSCRIPTS output. - return the contents of the sieve_global_path in the GETSCRIPT "default" command. - remove any sieve symlink after a SETACTIVE "default" command (as if SETACTIVE "" was given). This causes dovecot to fall back to the sieve_global_path script. - the DELETESCRIPT "default" command should fail. This might confuse clients and users, since it is listed in LISTSCRIPTS but cannot be deleted, but I think most users will understand they can't delete the default script. - RENAMESCRIPT "default" "some_name" should copy the sieve_global_path script into the user's sieve_dir. This will effectively copy the script instead of renaming it (since it will still be magically listed in LISTSCRIPTS), so that might be confusing. All other commands work just like they do now (in particular, PUTSCRIPT "default" uploads a script called "default" into the user's sieve_dir, preventing all of the above from applying. As noted above, this change might cause some confusion, but I think that is manageable. On additional thing is that running SETACTIVE "" will not completely disable sieve processing (as would be expected), but will (again) cause the sieve_global_path script to be run. This is already the case currently, though, and should probably be considered a separate problem (whose root cause is the lack of a difference between "no script script configured yet" and "active script disabled", both remove the sieve symlink). Also, this problem might be a feature in some setups, so fixing it might not be so easy... So, any thoughts on this? Any fundamental problems I'm missing? (Not-so) obvious alternatives? Gr. Matthijs

Yes - and it's been discussed here. Some "bright spark" rewrote the kernel epoll code to prevent DoS attacks caused by "excessive forking". That "bright spark" clearly doesn't use imap or webserver software. Redhat backported this change to kernels released after February 2012 and are about to release an emergency kernel release which removes it. A number of $LARGE companies were "not happy" As you've posted, compiling without epoll fixes the problem, but that doesn't help anyone using distro or repo packages.

Hey all, im experimenting with dovecot stats service, and graphing the result. My initial results are kind of interesting. Check out this graph showing connected sessions and users: http://grab.by/dReu At first I thought maybe one of our 35 imap servers was having issues sending data, but all individual servers show this patters. Here is a bunch of individual servers: http://grab.by/dReC Anyone have any idea what could cause such a pattern? Maybe dovecot does some cleaning up of idle sessions at specific intervals? Debian Lenny, Dovecot v 1.0.15. That's why I think it's on the server. And I no longer think it really has much to do with Dovecot, other than the login attempt going through it to get to PAM. But has anyone here seen this before? Is my current theory correct? What did you do to make it go away? [Dovecot] Inconsistent search results and crash on force-resync

Hi, I am seeing inconsistencies in search results (finding 2 emails when only 1 exists, finding the email when it has been moved to another folder, etc). I figured I should run force-resync to fix any issues. I ran the following: doveadm -v force-resync -u <user> <mailbox> and I got some worrysome logs. - I should mention that I have been seeing some crashes of fts-lucene in my logs. I sent a traceback of this on the mailing list 1-2 days ago under the subject "[Dovecot] fts_lucene crashing". - I should also mention that all the problems I am having are only in 1 email account. This email account contains folders of over 100k emails. Do I need to tweak dovecot somehow for this? Up until now all I did was change vsz_limit to 1024 MB for "service imap". Hi Why commenting out "inet_listener imaps {}" won't stop dovecot to listen port 993? I think this would be expected behavior. Just curious, finally got it working with port = 0. :) - Henri

Missed CCing on last reply. See below.. Also, would having Nagios checking the number of messages in a mailbox cause issues with the popping of messages? And/Or would having a user accessing the mailbox from two different applications cause issues? Ie. from Outlook and mobile device? I am under the impression that a lock file is generated which should deal with the issue of contention, deleting mail, etc. Thanks for any information. Restart helped for a moment, but problem was returning. When we back to older kernel - everything back to normal. We compile Dovecot with poll instead of epoll (--with-ioloop=poll) and this works for us. Is any problem with epoll on 3.2.x kernels? Or maybe this is Dovecot problem? Maybe this is not connected with epoll, but epoll is interferes with this. Problem on Dovecot 2.0.11 and 2.0.20. -- Len7hir

hello i have a real stumper of an issue here and need some help! Hello, On my MTA server where I have installed postfix+mysql+dovecot(2.0.19), when server receives e.g 1000 e-mails and postfix start 10 threads dovecot-lda then my load is growing up. Disk for e-mails is connected through with iSCSI protocol. Any idea why this is happening?

[Dovecot] Different SSL requirements for connections on different ports?

Hi All, I'm running dovecot 2.0.19. I currently have remote users access mail using IMAP over SSL, with their client certificates being both required and verified. I do this using "ssl = required" and "ssl_verify_client_cert = yes". I would now like to add a webmail front-end (squirrelmail) running on the same server. In order to achieve this I would like to have squirrelmail connecting locally using IMAP, but without the certificate requirement. I'm happy to use the standard IMAP port for this, since that port is firewalled so that only localhost has access. Do I need to run two separate dovecot instances in order to achieve this, or can I somehow configure different SSL requirements for the two ports? Is there a way to have the ssl directives I mention above active only for a certain port (or for certain hosts, i.e. non-local?) I've been looking around in the documentation, but I haven't yet worked out how to do this other than by having two separate dovecot instances running, with the different auth configurations. Is that the best approach, or can I get it working with only once instance? Thanks for any help! -- Bill Gallafent.

[Dovecot] Director and backend on the same server

I have setup director and a backend dovecot service on the same machine using different ports. The backend service is listening on the default 24, 110 and 143 for lmtp, pop3 and imap respectively. Director is listening on 10024, 10110 and 10143 for the same respective services. I can get this setup to work if I have one backend server on a different IP listening on 10024, it seems director tries to use the same port it is listening on when making backend connections. If I point it to the local backend server, it tries to connect to itself which fails. Is there a way to specify the backend ports that director tries to connect to? I see there is a way to specify the port in director_servers but I'm not sure how I would specify the different ports for the different backend services, if this is even possible.

What syntax is needed to make this work? The 2.0 wiki recomendations don't work - I can see the inboxes or the folders but not both at once and there are lots of error messages about prefix clashes if I simply use the existing 2.0.20 conf file on 2.1.6 The layout I have is: Inboxes in mbox format - /var/spool/mail/%u Folders in maildir format - /var/spool/imap/%u/Maildir/ Control and index folders are under separate trees (/var/spool/control & /var/spool/indexes) There's also a mbox area mainly for moving oversized inboxes (/var/spool/imap/%u/mbox/ - prefixed as OLD) Presumably I'm not the only one who's had problems of this type? [Dovecot] Bug report - crash on group lookup

Hi I was doing some migration from a 1.2 installation to a 2.1. While testing my new installation dovecot crashed at two test-cases constantly with with a "Panic: Trying to allocate 0 bytes" message. Both times it was because I was using a wrong group (or none) in my config. The output I got by dovecot was not that helpful. I only figured it out, that it has something to do with the group by looking at the code, to figure out where the stacktrace I got could come from. Unfortunately, I don't remember one of the examples anymore that correctly (except that it was also a group configuration related issue). The other example, was that I was testing the quota warning scripts: Normal delivery worked fine, but as soon as dovecot should send a quota warning, after the mail got already delivered, I received said panic. For the MTA the mail delivery failed (-> bounce), although the LDA already delivered the mail, but failed in post processing (sending the quota warning). My fix was to add: unix_listener quota-warning { group = mail mode = 0660 } to the quota warning service. The LDA process has an own user per mailbox and the mail group. It looks to me as it would panic by looking up the user of the lda process, but that's pure guess. Attached is a debug output and the configuration that triggered the problem. I see two problems: 1. Don't panic while "looking" up a group 2. Give a meaningful error messages. The root research works fine with postfix, samba+winbind, and I've an enterprise sized hardware firewall, and it works fine too. I'll be surprised if you tell me that Dovecot can't make a research without OU... That's why I'm posting here.. Hi, I'm struggling with the proper quota displaying under roundcube webmail. I've tracked the problem to the different responses on GETQUOTAROOT command. Roundcube aquire quota usage using IMAP command: GETQUOTAROOT INBOX Example dump of the roundcube <-> dovecot communication: > GETQUOTAROOT inbox < QUOTAROOT "inbox" "User quota" < QUOTA "User quota" (STORAGE 1198415 10485760) < OK Getquotaroot completed. This is something Timo hacked up for me a few years ago and I realised should be on the list in case anyone else wants them. The following patches will limit maildir folders to 4000 messages on Dovecot 2.0.* and 2.1.* The Specfile patch is against the Cityfan Redhat EL5 SRPM but is likely to work on most build platforms Changing the message limit requires a recompile. It's brutal and ugly but it prevents users overloading FSes that can't cope with huge numbers of files (EG: GFS2)

Hey All, I'm developing a site on a VPS that comes stock with dovecot 1.2.17 and I'm trying to setup some functionality that is very specific to our business model. My question is this: How do I create (programatically) aliases for a forwarder? I have an address, email(a)domain.com that gets sent to a php script and I want users to be able to send to that script via any number of different names (could ultimately be 1000's). I'm thinking that I append/delete from the etc/aliases file and then run #newaliases So that email(a)domain.com will answer on dummy(a)domain.com or dothis(a)domain.com, once the email comes in, I can check the header, get who it was really sent to, do all my checks, perform the necessary action blah blah blah... and be able to do it all on one piece of code (my fantasy LOL). Am I on the right track here or is this simply not going to work? Thanks, Pete

Hello, we're trying to setup a platform with authenticated SMTP with exim and relying on dovecot as auth agent. We've read http://wiki2.dovecot.org/HowTo/EximAndDovecotSASL and so made the changes mentioned there, also setting auth_mechanisms = plain login in conf.d/10-auth.conf . With this setup, we're able to use AUTH LOGIN method on an SMTP session, but using AUTH PLAIN fails. What we receive in the SMTP session is: auth plain `echo -e -n `\0user\0password' | mimencode` 535 Incorrect authentication data (it's actually the output of that command that we put there), and in the dovecot log we see: 2012-05-24 15:04:20 auth: Debug: client in: AUTH 1 PLAIN service=smtp secured rip=127.0.0.1 lip=127.0.0.1 nologin resp=<hidden> 2012-05-24 15:04:20 auth: Info: plain(?,127.0.0.1): invalid input Do you know where we can look to resolve this problem? Hello Dovecot users, It's been a few months since the last Pigeonhole release. The main reason is that I've introduced a few big new features. Although the new features themselves probably haven't seen much testing so far, I'm now pretty confident that existing configurations are not broken by these changes. The biggest change is the addition of dict support for Sieve script retrieval. It now possible to fetch Sieve scripts from an SQL database using the Dovecot dict facility. Read the INSTALL file and the referenced additional documentation for more information. Note that this feature currently is not usable with sieve_before/sieve_after and ManageSieve. Additionally, it is now possible to specify multiple sieve_before and sieve_after scripts. This for instance enables administrators to specify both global and user-specific scripts that are to be executed before and after the user's personal script. User-specific scripts configured in sieve_before and sieve_after can not be seen or changed through the ManageSieve protocol. Finally, as promised a while back, I've incorporated the vnd.dovecot.duplicate extension into the main Pigeonhole package. Using this Dovecot-specific extension it is possible to detect duplicate deliveries (such as for example caused by mailing list subscriptions). The detection is based on the message ID and uses the same database file (~/.dovecot.lda-dupes) as the vacation extension. Since the changes introduced in the release are rather large, I strongly advise you to experiment with it a bit before deployment. Changelog v0.3.1: * Added support for retrieving Sieve scripts from dict lookup. This means that Sieve scripts can now be downloaded from a database. Compiled script binaries are still put on disk somewhere if used. The INSTALL documentation is updated with information on this new feature and the (backwards-compatible) changes to the configuration. Note that his feature is currently not supported for sieve_before/sieve_after or script management through ManageSieve. + Incorporated the sieve_duplicate plugin into main Pigeonhole tree as a normal extension (vnd.dovecot.duplicate). This Dovecot-specific extension adds the ability to check for duplicate deliveries based on message ID. Specification can be found in: doc/rfc/spec-bosch-sieve-duplicate.txt + Added support for specifying multiple sieve_before and sieve_after paths. This adds much more flexibility to the multiscript configuration. One application is to have user-specific Sieve scripts outside the user's normal control through ManageSieve. + Added a "session ID" string for managesieve connections, available in %{session} variable (analogous to Dovecot change). - Fixed several small issues, including a few potential segfault bugs, based on static source code analysis. - ManageSieve: changed use of EPROTO error to EIO in ManageSieve string stream implementation because it is apparently not known in BSD. - Gave stamp.h.in (needed for autotools) some content to prevent it from disappearing in patch files. - Fixed bug that caused a SunStudio CC compile failure (reported by Piotr Tarnowski). A few years back I hacked up a perl chkpassldap.pl script to authenticate against ldap, and optionally authorize against groups and/or ldap attributes. This works with both qmail and Dovecot, and it also supports a somewhat generic method to alter the environment suitable to use for Dovecot as a prefetch userdb. Anyway, I have been running the script on a qmail-ldap and Dovecot 1.2 proxying cluster using the stock qmail-ldap attributes without any troubles, and figured I would finally release it in the thought someone might find it useful. http://fritz.potsdam.edu/projects/chkpassldap I tried to document the ins and outs of userdb configuration. Hi, in my dovecot setup the accounting database table shows wrong values which do not correspond with the actual disk space used. Hi, Due to some reasons I've to support both dovecot 1.2 and dovecot 2.x, and I just found that the -s parameter I used to autosubscribe to sieve folders doesn't exist anymore in dovecot 2.x The problem arises because (AFAIK) in postfix's master.cf you can only specify one configuration, and I used to have this: dovecot unix - n n - - pipe flags=DRhu user=vmail argv=/usr/lib/dovecot/deliver -f ${sender} -d ${recipient} -s Is there any way to make the config compatible for both versions, achieving the autosubscribe and not crashing dovecot?

I have a friend who is preparing to set up a small Postfix/Dovecot mail system. There are only approximately 25 users. He wants to use Berkeley DB in a similar fashion to the way Postfix does. I told him I do not believe Dovecot supports that. I could not find any documentation relating to it. 1) Does Dovecot support Berkeley DB? 2) Are their any plans to incorporate that feature into Dovecot? It seems like it could potentially be a very useful feature. [Dovecot] dovecot fts_lucene indexes not being updated

Hi everyone, I have a dovecot 2.1.6 setup with fts_lucene. The lucene indexes get created/updated fine when I do a manual search thru telnet. However, if I run a webapp that uses the php::imap_search function, the index never gets created/updated. I run indo the same problem with thunderbird and full-body search. Hello I installed dovecot 2.0.9 (and dovecot-mysql!) on my Ubuntu 12.04 LTS root-server to work together with Postfix 2.9.1-4 After some struggle, I got Postfix's auth working, using dovecot for smtp-authentification with mysql. But dovecot himself is not working properly. [Dovecot] Convert from ISO-8859-1 to UTF-8?

The server I am running Dovecot on is still using locale = ISO-8859-1 but I am thinking it is time to convert to UTF-8... Can I just use convmv to convert all the files in the mailboxes to UTF-8 or is there anything else I need to do? Do I need to run iconv to convert the content also or does dovecot/MUA fix this by it self? I personally didn't mind a one-time notice from the dev's team that that are now offering paid commercial support. What if I WANTED it? I felt like it was a courtesy email from them to let me know that it's available. If those emails continue unsolicited, then it may start to feel like spam to me, but this did not. In general, I've actually been looking for ways to financially support good open source projects. I have worked with many & find that oftentimes, the ones with hood commercial support tend to be ones that have the manpower resources needed to quickly fix bugs, patch vulnerabilities, maintain a strong development schedule & give decent support through mailing lists & similar means. So when I received the email, immediately I thought: "Hmm. This may come in handy down the road, and would serve two purposes by giving me an easily justifiable means to support the project". Hi, right now my index directory is part of the users home directory: mail_home = /var/mail/%d/%n mail_location = mdbox:~/mdbox I want the indexes to be stored in a different location: mail_home = /var/mail/%d/%n mail_location = mdbox:~/mdbox:INDEX=/var/indexes/%d/%n If I just switch this setting and reload the configuration, no e-mails are shown to the user. After restoring the whole maildir I deleted all dovecot.index.*-files from that user and starting dovecot with the new index directory setting, I got the following error after connecting. [Dovecot] wrong search results with fts_solr

I am getting some very weird search results with fts_solr. 1) when I do a search for "testin" I get 0 results. 2) when I do a search for "testing" i get 44 results. The problem is that I am expecting only 1 result. I don't know the solr internal very much, but does anyone have any idea what is going on? [Dovecot] High level of pop3 popping causing server to become unresponsive

Hello all, We have put Dovecot 2.1.4 on several of our production servers (CentOS, on Dell R710, with 20GB memory, dual CPU Quad-core). We have a single instance of Dovecot running and currently have several instances of Popa3d. When there are significant amount of popping from 2 mailboxes that dovecot that is popping from (500+ msgs in the mailboxes), the popping of the messages causes the boxes to become unresponsive. We use another application that connects to the Dovecot, downloads 2-10 messages, then processes them, then sends the delete command to Dovecot. When this issue occurs we are unable to become Root, or login again if we close our ssh connection. This only occures when Dovecot is doing the popping. If we only run the older Popa3d, this doesn't occur. We believe it is caused by the way dovecot is authenticating. We are using auth_mechanisms = plain passdb drive = shadow usedb driver = passwd args = blocking=yes If anyone could suggest what could be causing the login issue, we would appreciate any incite to fix it! Hi everyone. I have a postfix working with sasl auth and dovecot, everything works fine. I just have 2 issues, the first is that if you add the IMAP mail accounts you can import all the mboxes on the /var/spool/mail/ which we don't want. The second issue is that there's no sent, trash and draft folder, so if we have imap we are not able to store those emails. Basically I would like to know how to fix both but the first one is the most urgent. I thought it was a postfix issue, but it seems not to be. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for your help. Hi, I'm attempting to implement Dovecot 2.1.3 built on a FreeBSD 8.2 64 bit system from ports. I had the servicve up and running on a local vbox demo which did a very simple Maildir format sytem which was situated in ~/Maildir. I would now like to expand the system and tie it to a Windows domain. What is the best way to go about doing this? Can Dovecot be directly tied in or do I need to tie the server in to the domain? This is my current dovecot.conf file - which of course I will tweak but as I am currently in the stage of building this is what I have so far: protocols = imap # It's nice to have separate log files for Dovecot. [Dovecot] Migration between namespaces breaks outlook on mac's

Hi there, We're running dovecot 1.1 on one set of servers with a courier-imap-like namespace configuration: namespace private { separator = . prefix = INBOX. inbox = yes } We're now migrating customers onto a dovecot-2 platform, switching from Maildir to sdbox (using dsync mirror) & changing the namespace at the same time. New namespace configuration looks like (as taken from http://wiki2.dovecot.org/Namespaces) # This is for courier-imap namespace compatability namespace { type = private separator = / prefix = inbox = yes } namespace { type = private prefix = INBOX. separator = . inbox = no hidden = yes list = no alias_for = } For 99% of clients this works fine eg thunderbird on first login after migration notices the folder structure has changed & automagically redownloads folders & emails. However I have noticed some really strange messages in the logs which seems to be related to customers running outlook on macos. Hi all, I followed the instructions here: http://library.linode.com/email/postfix/dovecot-mysql-centos-5 to configure Postfix to work with MySQL and Dovecot before discovering PostfixAdmin (I was searching for a visual tool for creating users). Since I had created MySQL database already for virtual domains and user mailboxes (following the instructions I linked to earlier) and PostFix admin's db too does the same. Question #1: is there anyway to make all these work with together for the creationg and use of virtual users/mailboxes? or is there another visual tool for creating virtual users/mailboxes? I had also installed Roundcube following the instructions on Roundcube's page: http://trac.roundcube.net/wiki/Howto_Install The questions now is: . #2. Roundcube came with its own database, which also stores user information. Is there a way to ensure that the user information is picked from the database created to work with Postfix (and not Roundcube's)? Thanks.

Hi all, I've run into an issue we have with dovecot versions 2.0.12 through 2.0.14 on latest CentOS 6.2 when dealing with Maildirs located on NFS partitions. Although I saw Mr. Egbert's thread, his resolution does not work on our end. When dealing with users with over 500 messages in any of their Maildir folders, they occasionally receive an error from the server: Internal error occurred. Refer to server log for more information. Running readdir.c that Timo provided always returns errno == 0 on {cur,new} of all the directories reported in the logs. It does not occur consistently in production, but it does tend to occur to a fuzzy set of the same users on different partitions. We can replicate it every time in testing. The file count in these directories are all over the place, from less than a thousand to multiple thousands. However, it's hard to calculate what may have been in new prior to the clients processing/sorting that mail. It may have been more on the higher side than lower. The error tends to favor new over cur, but there are exceptions. The tests we have been trying: Create a new folder using alpine, save anywhere from 1000 to 10000 identical emails to the new folder. Change to that new folder, thus prompting the move from new to cur. The client receives the message and aborts the opening. Anywhere from 400-520 files are successfully moved each time. It takes numerous attempts to finally move all the files over--which I suspect some IMAP clients do, hence the inconsistent errors in production. We then create a brand new folder with the same amount of files and verify that the error is reproduceable--which it is. I'm leaning towards some sort of bug on the NFS client level, as Timo mentioned, but the odd thing is we were running this setup since early April and did not begin seeing these errors until early May--with user load being relatively consistent during that time. I would think the bug would have been evident before then. I'm also curious as to why dovecot is getting an ELOOP error code from it. Hello I am struggling with Dovecot 2 (coming from Dovecot 1.0.10) with mysql Authentification for Postfix. I get errors when using it: dovecot: auth: Fatal: Unknown database driver 'mysql' dovecot: master: Error: service(auth): command startup failed, throttling But a first thing would be to log the real errors, if there are any, so I set in /etc/dovecot/conf.d/10-logging.conf auth_verbose, auth_verbose_passwords, auth_debug, auth_debug_passwords, mail_debug, verbose_ssl all to yes and I set: debug_log_path = /var/log/dovecot-debug.log but there is no logfile after restarting dovecot. How can I enable a (verbous) own Logfile in Dovecot? frank

You can then correlate web logs with the hashes to see which messages got rendered. A hit does not necessarily mean it got read, and the absense does not mean it was ignored, but it's better than nothing. If you value your privacy, turn off HTML rendering on your Email reader. [Dovecot] plugin: Don't allow deleting the last instance of a mail

Before beginning to code it, does anyone have any related ideas that could be useful before starting it? Mainly what I'm intending to do is to write a plugin for mdbox storage that allows users to expunge mails in a specific namespace only if there are other instances for the mail. So basically: * Users can't accidentally delete mails (in shared mailboxes) * Users can still move mails within folders For v2.1 this can be implemented only to a specific storage backend, so at least for now only mdbox will support it. Maildir and sdbox support would also be possible by looking at hard link counts. Race conditions would allow deleting the mails, but that's unlikely to be an issue since the main point is to avoid accidental deletions that shouldn't be attempted in the first place anyway.

Based on http://wiki2.dovecot.org/Services#indexer-worker it seems like this is because the indexer-worker process is created as root but at the time of indexing the indexer-worker drops privs to the mail user. In /proc/<indexer-worker pid>/, io is mode 0400 and owned by root, so it makes sense that the mail user would be unable to read that file. [Dovecot] [Plugin dev] First-time-only cache lock failure

Hi This is a question related to plugin developement on Dovecot 2.1.4. I'm currently implementing a dovecot plugin that retrieves mails from a corporate server through an internal protocol. The plugin is very similar to the pop3c storage (lib-storage/index/pop3c). The plugin has to map original server UIDs to IMAP UIDs, using MAIL_CACHE_POP3_UIDL cache field the same way pop3c does. So, I've got a function similar to pop3c_sync_messages(), performing several mail_index_append() and mail_cache_add() calls. The problem is that on the first sync, when the index and cache files don't exist yet, there's a failure writing data in cache. The call to mail_index_sync_commit()\mail_cache_transaction_commit() fails because of mail_cache_transaction_lock(). The index and cache files are properly created, but the cache doesn't contain the MAIL_CACHE_POP3_UIDL values. It works properly on the second sync, the MAIL_CACHE_POP3_UIDL field being properly saved. Would you have some ideas on what could be wrong here? Thanks, John

[Dovecot] dovecot/auth killed with signal 6

I've had this working for over a month now with no problems. Then I suffered a power outage today, and now dovecot/auth dies as soon as I start dovecot. I've spent the past three hours searching google, but can't find even a hint at what's wrong with my server. As far as I can tell, this is the only thing that has failed after bringing the server back up when power was restored. Can anyone help me figure out what is wrong?
