[Dovecot] Why is my quota warning script not getting executed?

Storing my users and quota in MySQL,running Dovecot 1.2.16, and followed the page at http://wiki1.dovecot.org/Quota/Dict I'm burning my eyes trying to find any syntax issues but can't. Multiple mirrors (seems like you have plenty of offers) preferrably is multi geographical regions, using DNS round robin with TTL 0 on www and ftp , I wouldnt bother with the wiki mirroring though. However you could run 3600 seconds on it, should you need to bring it back elsewhere in a hurry. [Dovecot] Having trouble getting Dovecot to read a ~/Maildir configuration

Hi folks Setting up a new server, hence a few software packages have been upgraded / changed. On my old server (only 2 years old) I was using Dovecot and RoundCube (web mail app) and had a good experience so was keen to use these again. The only major change is I have switched from sendmail to exim4 (which was installed by default on this Debian server). Exim4 appears to be doing the right thing, however read on and see if you can spot the error. I've tried two email clients, RoundCube (via apache) as a local connection and Evolution as a remote connection. Both appear to login to the Dovecot IMAP connection okay (log entries included further down), although they don't see any email. The INBOX is completely empty. Although when I check out /home/postmaster/Maildir/new it has many messages waiting to be read. It's like Exim4 is delivering the email into the ~/Maildir folder but Dovecot is not seeing it.... Hi all I hope to get some help on the separator. I am sure that I hava a wrong understanding what the separator is. I thaught the separator is the delimiter within the imap folder structure. For example: Imap folder structure: folder Flights, subfolder Lufthansa If the delimiter is . the ls a command should result: .Flights .Flights.Lufthansa If delimiter is / Flights Flights/Lufthansa I tried several delimiters but only the . Works. [Dovecot] Thunderbird does not notice new mails arrival in imap folders

Hello Since I've installed Dovecot 2 I've observed that TB does not notice new mails arrival in IMAP folders. When I click on a folder new mails count is updated, with dovecot 1 it was automatic. I wonder if it is due to the new TB version (lastest stable) or Dovecot 2 (2.0.11). I use MBOX format. [Dovecot] sieve & plus addressing

Assume and e-mail address of: me+dovecot(a)domain.com I have a sieve script that sorts mail into the appropriate folders using "+" addressing. I want to extend it to also work with mailing list like this one. A post from the dovecot forum arrives with a Delivered-To: me+dovecot(a)domain.com when I receive it. The "To" is to dovecot. I cannot figure out a way to get sieve to filter on the "Delivered-To" portion rather than the "To" portion using plus addressing. There are several other names; i.e, john, joe, bill, nancy, etcetera that would have the plus suffix of (in this scenario anyway) dovecot. Filtering on each individual address would be a real PIA. I believe it is not supported though. EXAMPLE: This works fine when filtering on the "To" attribute: Assuming email address: me+dovecot(a)domain.com ## Plus Addressing if envelope :detail "To" "dovecot" {fileinto "Dovecot"; stop;} Unfortunately, I cannot substitute the "Delivered-To" attribute in place of the "To" one. I know and currently do sort based on the "List-ID" attribute; however, I have other reasons for wanting to sort only on the delivery address. [Dovecot] Running mailfront under dovecot2.x service supervision

Hello, Hello, I'm trying to run mailfront SMTP (http://untroubled.org/mailfront/) under Dovecot 2.x process/service supervision My intention was to utilize the fact that dovecot2.x seems to have some kind of generic process/service supervision as well as builtin ssl support. But I cannot get the most simple generic service setup (without ssl) to work. Currently running dovecot 2.0.11 on FreeBSD 8.1 service smtp-auth { executable = /usr/local/bin/smtpfront-qmail inet_listener smtp-auth { port = 587 ssl = no } } I have added the above to dovecot.conf Once I start dovecot everything seems fine - no errors in the log But at the first attempt to telnet to localhost port 587 - I instantly get the indication of never ending forks in the dovecot log (see below) - neither do I get the SMTP prompt that I expected in my telnet session - it just hangs. Tried to use the option: mail_access_groups but doesn't work at all when the first creation of the user path. "For example a simple way to set up shared mailbox access for all system users is to make all mail dirs/files 0770/0660 mode and owned by group "sharedmail" and then set mail_access_groups=sharedmail. Using more fine grained groups of course leaks less mail data in case there's a security hole in Dovecot" Is a bug? I need to log when messages are deleted so I can tell to the customer when and from which IP address his/her mailbox was emptied. [Dovecot] help with MYSQL and dovecot

Hello all: I understand I can't provide to much information; at the moment, I do not have dovecot installed. Here is the problem. I started out running saslauthd, but there appears to be a problem where memory isn't freed after someone fails to authenticate, which leads to a huge dos attack. I hit this problem a couple of times, and it looks like some poor lonely soul (or bot, as it may be) with no life decided to go after my server again today. I had previously tried to configure dovecot, but I have an odd mysql setup, so it was particularly dificult. I am leaving out of town tomorrow afternoon and will not have internet, so I want to make sure this is going to be running as it should be. Here is the info from the dovecot configuration file for mysql. It was giving an error about "username" when I tried to run this. Is it possible to authenticate users against multiple independent AD domains? In my dovecot-ldap.conf I entered two hosts: hosts = host1 host 2 auth_bind_userdn = %d\%n ldap_version = 3 base = cn=users,dc=%d,dc=net auth_bind = yes but OpenLDAP seems to stop authentication as soon as the first host succeeds or fails. I also tried to configure trust between the two, but it didn't work either. Please help...

I don't really need logging of successful local deliveries since the MTA provides enough data. [Dovecot] Debug new emails?

Hi guys. I would like to debug all the new emails arrive to the users mailbox, I have some issue with 1 users that claim that is losing some important emails. The issue that I are not logging to much info in dovecot, I had read the mail_log plugin wiki is not difficult to setup. I want to see went the users receive the new emails, because postfix have the log that say" "sent" from the envelop to the issue user, but I the user say that he didn't receive the email, check his emails and is true I didn't see those 2 emails that postfix send to the user mailbox. I check my spam server and is not blocking that envelop, the spam is not causing this. I'm using Centos 5.4 Postfix 2.3.x Dovecot 1.0.x,but reading mail_log plugin say that we need 1.2.x, can I still use this plugin or I have other options? Thanks!!!

[Dovecot] expire-tool skipping mailbox

Hello, I have dovecot set up with expire-tool to nuke Junk messages greater than 30 days old. On a server with many user accounts, it seems to work on most of them. However, on my user account, expire-tool skips my Junk folder entirely, despite it containing messages from January of this year. Here is the expire-tool --test output: Info: alex(a)scienceforums.net/Junk: timestamp 1284027481 (Thu Sep 9 05:18:01 2010) -> 1304023056 (Thu Apr 28 15:37:36 2011) Then it skips to the next mailbox. (Note that I intentionally set the timestamp back to force it to consider my mailbox.) I don't understand why it doesn't want to expunge my 2700 junk messages when it will expunge several thousand in other accounts happily. The expire plugin has been enabled for probably over a year, so all of the messages should be tracked. My only hypothesis is that it has something to do with variables in the mail_location; however, mail_location should be overridden by a user_query, though that contains variables too. Would this account for the issue? It turns out that the /opt/coolstack stuff related to openssl is actually symlinks to /usr/sfw. So, in the Makefile, if I set the openssl directory to /usr/sfw, rather than the default /usr/local/openssl, it finds the includes, the libraries, and the binaries that are needed. Then I specifically point the certs directory (in the Makefile) to /usr/local/openssl/certs for local control. Then, for the example of uw-imap, everything builds just fine. This should simply apply to anything we need to build with openssl on any of the T5220s. One side note is that this was a custom Makefile. Applications that use ./configure would presumably find the openssl through the paths provided in /usr/local/src/env. In the process of figuring that out, I also found that one of the most recent Solaris 10 kernel patches that we have on imladris specifically addresses awareness of the crypto accelerators and included patches to the openssl related items in /usr/sfw. So, I'm pretty confident that everything is alright. It's interesting too that in the paper presented at ACM by Sun last year they said that a couple of classes of attacks on crypto processes were negated by running it directly on the CPU. One of them had to do with timing. I should forward that paper to you as well. the new src/lib/ipwd.c introduced in 2.0.12 no longer compiles on solaris. Under solaris, the *_r routines doesn't pass in result as the last parameter and return errno - it just returns result. obviously a job for configure..... -- Roger Fujii<rmf(a)lookhere.com>

Dear sirs, I'm working on Post-login script for migrating 40K Courier-imap users to Dovecot. After reading related topics about post-login script in your documentation, mailing list, I cannot remove the problem described here-below. Is there any special config to add when users are virtual (authentication and user info is fed by LDAP server). I would be grad if anyone could give me advise. Phenomena: ========== Although the authentication and script execution is successfully done, Pop3 session is aborted just after that, leaving the following error message to syslog: /var/log/maillog: Feb 7 17:45:58 pop3migr dovecot: pop3(vuser1): Post-login script denied access to user vuser1 cf. "vuser1" is UID of a virtual account on the LDAP tree. Maildir is located at /var/spool/postfixdata/%u/Maildir, and is owned by linux local user "mailuser". Dovecot works perfect ,if post-login script configuration is commented out. Environment: Dovecot: dovecot-2.0.9 (built from source tar ball) OS: Linux / 2.6.30.10-105.2.23.fc11.x86_64 (Virtual machine on a xen server) Maidir: tested both with local file system and NFS (ext3, xfs) client: Using telnet on pop3 TCP port. All the pop3 users are virtual and does not have local login account ('authentication and user information is given by LDAP server). SMTP service is managed by Postfix: ( A single local login account is writing all mails to Maildir for all the virtual users. ) Thanks in advance.

[Dovecot] How to purge mailboxes manually [dovecot_1.2.15]

Hi, we have a linux network at the office. Mainly ubuntu and debian systems. Each user has it's own mail client, thunderbird, evolution, etc. In the mail server we use as the local delivery agent, dovecot 1.2.15 and the protocol imap. The users mailbox are in the server at /var/mail. Due to some kind of problem the mails that are set for delete in the mail client are not being deleted in the mailbox (if we check the mbox the mails are marked to be purged). Unless the owner uses something lowlevel shell mail client like pine to do the purge, the mails start to pile filling the account. Is this some known bug with a fix, or is there some routine we can run as admins to actually purged the mails set for deletion? (Like the "doveadm purge" in dovecot 2.0) Thanks a lot, looking forward to your answers, Emilio P.S: we would really like not having to install dovecot 2.0 :)

Hello Dovecot users, It's been a while since the last Pigeonhole release. This new release adds support for the new vacation-seconds extension, which allows the vacation extension to reply more frequently than every day and allows specifying this interval in seconds instead of days. I've also fixed quite a few bugs that were reported in the last couple of months. Changelog v0.2.3: * Sieve-filter tool: finished implementing basic functionality. It is not quite ready yet, but it is available for those willing to experiment with it (needs --with-unfinished-features config to compile). Also includes man page. + Vacation extension now inhibits replies to messages from sender listed in :addresses, thus preventing replies to one of the user's other known addresses. + Vacation extension: implemented the (draft) vacation-seconds extension. This also adds min/max period configuration settings. Refer to doc/vacation.txt for configuration information. - ManageSieve: fixed bug in UTF-8 checking of string values. This is done by discarding the original implementation and migrating to the Dovecot API's UTF-8 functionality. - Sieve command line tools now avoid initializing the mail store unless necessary. This prevents sievec and sieve-dump from failing when executed by root for example. - Enotify extension: fixed inappropriate return type in mailto URI parse function, also fixing ARM compiler warning. - Vacation extension: fixed handling of sendmail errors. It produced an additional confusing success message in case of error. - Removed header MIME-decoding to fix erroneous address parsing. Applies to address test and vacation command. - Fixed segfault bug in extension configuration, triggered when unknown extension is mentioned in sieve_extensions setting. You'd need to find out what exactly is locking those mailboxes for that long. It could simply be the user's client. Or I guess it could be LDA itself, or anything really.. Difficult to say. Difficult also to tell easy way to debug this.. Or when this happens does it happen to many people at the same time? Is the system load really high at that time then?

[Dovecot] Login via IMAP with MySQL as user database not working

Hello all, I am migrating from Postfix/Cyrus/MySQL mail server to a recently installed dovecot 1.2.8 on a QNAP TS259 NAS via XDove. I am unable to login via IMAP (the only method I've tried and the only method I want). I am using an almost identical database as the current existing Postfix/Cyrus/MySQL setup (with the except of paths). I have been attempting to get this working (off and on) for the past 5 months. During that time I have researched and researched, but have not found a solution. The Maildir has been copied from the existing server to the Dovecot server and have run the script 'courier-dovecot-migrate.pl', which was found at http://www.dovecot.org/tools/courier-dovecot-migrate.pl In a nutshell: If I have the password_query string in the SQL config file (shown below) set to return only 1 field, i.e. the password, then the Dovecot authtest app succeeds. But if more than 1 field is returned (i.e.: user and password) the test fails. And if testing with telnet I get the message of "* BYE Internal login failure. Refer to server log for more information.". The logs indicate that the password check returned OK but the userdb read appears to fail. If I change the userdb_query to return only 1 field (such as only the uid), then the logs show the correct value is returned, and yet the telnet login fails. So it seems that anytime there are multiple fields returned from the SQL query, the result is failure at that step (password check or userdb read). Therefore userdb prefetch never works. The NAS doesn't utilize a syslog so it's of no help in debugging. Greetings, Post 12689:7f5735ab7c35 / 12690:02829f7f79c7 dovecot uses the reentrant version of get(password/group)* related functions. There are two variants of these functions on Solaris. To get the variant used by dovecot code based you need to define _POSIX_PTHREAD_SEMANTICS (see attached manual page). Initially I defined this just for the compilation of lib/src/ipwd.c, and got the code to compile / check / run successfully in my environment. After this worked I decided to try compiling the whole code base with CPPFLAGS="-D_POSIX_PTHREAD_SEMANTICS" ./configure .... This also seems to work fine. My environment uses IMAPS (X86) and Proxying IMAPS (SPARC). All code compiles / checks / runs (only 64-bit versions run tested) with the above CPPFLAGS modification on Oracle Solaris 10 Update 9 (both 32/64 bit on both X86 / SPARC with GCC 4.1.2) systems. [Dovecot] Questions about converting maildir to mdbox.

First of all i would like to thanks Timo for the excellent job done in dovecot. We are using it in you prodution server with about 5 millions of emails and it is pretty good, only a performance problens but i guess it is realated to ocfs2 that we are using. So lets begin: We are using dovecot 2.0.6 with maildir in an ocfs2 partiton. It is pretty slow access in peak time, but it is related to ocfs2 as i said before, i am trying to mimimize the ocfs2 latancy by using mdbox. Another problem that we have are Full backup that takes about 24h and incremental takes about 13h I am thinking in converting some email for testing propose, but i am wondoring how would dovecot convert this, like if i convert all mail from maildir to mdbox it would make many mailbox based on this seetings ? Or in the first convert it would make a big mdbox file and after it it will rotate by day or it would make many boxes just based on size? mdbox_rotate_size = 5m mdbox_rotate_interval = 1d Well, another thing can i make rotate interval happens in a certain time of day? end from where it takes this time ? it rotates at midnight ? Another one!, if i lose the index files what really happens ? Sometimes in my server the index get corrupet and as i am reading mdbox index files held information that is not in other place. So what should i do to prevent any possible lose of data even if i lose the indexes? I was reading about backup restore also, but i did not get it pretty well. With maildir we simple restore the files and the index gets rebuilt! What should i do with mdbox ? Restore the files and the index ? But how about the other emails that the account got after the backup, how i should merge the multiple files and more importanet how do i merge the index files ? Well, sorry about my english! Hello We are using SLAMD (Distributed Load Generation Engine, www.slamd.com) to benchmark our dovecot server (ldap auth). We are simulating 2.000 simultaneous logins and 20% of them fail. When i create the file .dovecot.sieve and compiled one .dovecot.svbin on user homedir, the imap show it like a folder, example: doveadm mailbox list -u user(a)domain.com .. .. *dovecot.sieve* *dovecot.svbin* .. .. Hello, dovecot users. I'm trying to cope with following problem I have single computer which will be going to be final destination for several virtual domains. Domains are stored in LDAP catalog. Dovecot will be working together with Postfix MTA running on same computer. I'm a bit confused how to achieve following thing: I want Postfix to use Dovecot LMTP server for mail delivery. All my mail is located under /var/vmail partition. I designed my own ldap schema and according to dovecot documentation that user should always has home and mail directory i added separate attributes for user home and mail. My typical user that is stored in LDAP has homeDirectory (which stores value like /var/vmail/domain.com/j/joe) and mailMessageStore (which stores value like /var/vmail/domain.com/j/joe/Maildir). All data under /var/vmail is owned by Postfix MTA user (which is called `postfix', uid=89). After reading dovecot documentation I understand that my setup needs to combine static userdb with LDAP passdb. But i also want dovecot to be able to deliver mail for local system users (that are stored in /etc/passwd). For system users i want to store their mail in $HOME/Mail. So i set mail_location = ~/Mail (which turns into /home/user/Mail), but for virtual (which are stored in LDAP) users i want to set mail (or maybe i should write here userdb_mail) to LDAP value mailMessageStore. Seems to me that LMTP server needs separate userdb query to fetch mail_location from LDAP. Setting mail_location = /var/vmail/%d/%n1/%u solves my problem, but I want dovecot to dynamically fetch maildir location from LDAP. Maybe in near future I would also store mail somewhere else not only under /var/vmail. And dovecot will fetch this information from LDAP. Our fix was to install systemwide defaults on managed systems to not synchronize (not needed, the home directories are on network storage anyway) and to ask people to check/unset this on laptops/etc

hello, I try to use the deliver dovecot with hardlinks. in command line, it's work with this command /usr/lib/dovecot/deliver -p themail -d user when i send mail with postfix. Hello all, First, thanks for your help with my previous NFS problem. I am trying to mount a mail server, with debian and dovecot 1.2. Until now, I have both shared and public folders working, on a NFS share. indexes are stored locally, as well as per user flags. Sive is also working :-) Now, I'd like to restrict sharing by domain, and for this, to use the "%d" variable When I authenticate, for instance using arodier@red2team, the authentication works. After hearing so many good things about mdbox, I am testing it. I moved my Maildir to a test box, and did the conversion with dsync which reported no errors and appeared to go fine after I set: namespace { separator = / inbox = yes } and changed mail_location=mdbox:~/mdbox But the problem is that the Inbox now is empty in my imap client. What did I do wrong? I can see the emails are there if I grep for subject lines I know exist in my inbox within ~/mdbox, but in the imap client it is as if inbox is totally empty. All the other folders appear fine in imap client.

[Dovecot] Dovecot 2.0 config bug with SSL certificate per protocol?

Hi, yesterday I upgraded Dovecot from 1.2 to 2.0.11. I'd seen that there was a config file converter to make the upgrade smooth so was expecting it to be pretty quick and easy. In the end I spent a long time trying to get it working as it just wouldn't listen on the ssl ports, imaps and pop3s. I am using per portocol SSL certificates, as I was in version 1.2. The part of my config is as follows (as generated by doveconf): protocol imap { imap_client_workarounds = delay-newmail tb-extra-mailbox-sep mail_plugins = fts fts_squat ssl = yes ssl_cert = </usr/local/etc/ssl.crt/imap.crt ssl_key = </usr/local/etc/ssl.key/imap.key } protocol pop3 { pop3_client_workarounds = outlook-no-nuls oe-ns-eoh pop3_uidl_format = %08Xu%08Xv ssl = yes ssl_cert = </usr/local/etc/ssl.crt/pop3.crt ssl_key = </usr/local/etc/ssl.key/pop3.key } But when I started dovecot it was only listening on the non SSL ports for IMAP and POP3. I went through many things, adding in a service imap-login section with the SSL port set via inet_listener and spent ages googling for how to get it to work. In the end it turns out it was that the global ssl setting was set to "no", but I hadn't enabled this previously as this requires that there are global SSL certificates, which I don't have; I have specific certs for IMAP and for POP3. Also this isn't how dovecot 1.2 worked, there I specificed the protocols (pop3, pop3s, imap, imaps) and specificed the protocol certs and it worked. Anyway, I ended up just specifiing my pop3 certs as the global certs, this is then redefined in the pop3 protcol section etc. The config seems to work, but to me all this doesn't seem logical and doesn't work like in dovecot 1.2. Maybe this is something that can be cleaned up in the next version? thanks Andy.

Hi Okay so we've been having this issue since forever and I figured why the heck not ask it here since it's mostly related to dovecot. The thing is, we have a huge amount of public folders (at the moment, around 1100). Now, with dovecot indexing and caching we're mostly okay, also being careful with things like Thunderbird 3's default 'Download everything' option ("Keep messages for this account on this computer") and such. However once in a while, someone goes rogue, we install a new version of thunderbird, someone accidentally sets up an email account in thunderbird mistakingly leaving the download everything option on. This causes high IO on our server, and a single user can quickly more or less kill the whole server in mere minutes, load average quickly spiking to 30-40-50 and everything becomes sloooooow (obviously). Is there any way I can limit the amount of IO a certain user can use? Hi. I use dovecot-2.0.11-1.fc14.i686 on linux,redhat fedora 14. Using alpine 2.02 and Kmail 1.13.5 i have one IMAP connection to the dovecot server and one IMAP connection to a MS exchange server. I'm testing my new dovecot server with Thundirbird I can have it working on port 143 with STARTTLS, or on port 993 with SSL/TLS my uderstanding is that on 993 I get encrypted 'password and mail transfer' (yes ?) so what happens if I use 143 with STARTTLS, is that equivalent to port 993 if STARTTLS is used ? thanks for any insights.. -- Voytek

[Dovecot] Imap segfault on login with version 2.0.8 & 2.0.11

Hi everyone, I'm trying to upgrade/test our configuration files from Dovecot 1.2 to 2.0.11. I used the Dovecot config convert command, created a RHEL 5 x86_64 rpm, and tested it. I can connect, but once I login, the IMAP service segfaults. I've also reproduced this on version 2.0.8. I installed the debug RPM (for the stripped symbols), took a look at the core dump in gdb, and just got the _start method in ld_preload and a broken pointer in the backtrace. I tried to strace everything but the segfault doesn't happen then :-). I'm not sure what to do to get better information. I attached my client session, dovecot -n output, gdb trace, maillog, and the core dump. [Dovecot] restarting director

Hi all, anyone having any problems with restarting the director? Every time I bring down 1 of the director servers, reboot it, or just restart it for whatever reason, im seeing all kinds of problems. Dovecot generally always gives me this error: Jan 20 22:49:55 imapdirector3 dovecot: director: Error: Director 194.109.26.173:444/right disconnected before handshake finished It seems the directors cant agree on forming a ring anymore, and this may be leading to problems with clients. I mostly have to resort to bringing down all directors, and restarting them all at once. Not really a workable solution. As an example, last night for a few hours we were getting complaints from customers about being disconnected, and the only obvious error in the log was the one above, after one of my colleagues had to restart a director because of some changes in the syslog daemon. After I restarted all directors withing a few seconds of each other, all complaints disappeared. Timo, i know ive asked similar questions before, but the answer just eludes me. If I have 3 director servers, and need to take one down and restart it, what is the proper method to reconnect the ring? In practice, I cant seem to work it out and I mostly end up with the above error until I just restart them all. Not fun with 20.000 clients connected. Cor

[Dovecot] Thunderbird 3.1 unable to delete subfolder of Trash under mdbox

Thunderbird 3.1.9 over Windows 7. Dovecot 2.0.11 (2:2.0.11-0~auto+41 from http://xi.rename-it.nl/debian/ source on 8 Apr 2011) over Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. Trying to set up a Dovecot system with mdbox. But I also wanted to keep some Maildir. So I ended up with both mdbox and Maildir side-by-side and noticed an issue. On this system, Dovecot's global mail location is configured with maildir:~/Maildir I have a two users configured in a password-file passdb/userdb: One using the Dovecot global mail location (maildir:~/Maildir) the other with an override mail location (userdb_mail) of mdbox:~/mdbox (The only other configurations different to the default were to turn off the default system password passdb and userdb, and enable my local password-file-format passdb and userdb.) I have configured two IMAP accounts in Thunderbird 3.1.9, one to access each of the two users above. The test procedure is: In Thunderbird, create a folder at the top level (i.e. alongside Inbox), say "foo". In Thunderbird, delete the folder just created. This results in Thunderbird "moving" the folder to "Trash", resulting in a folder "Trash/foo". Up to this point, both the Maildir and mdbox users behave OK. Then in Thunderbird, delete the trashed folder "Trash/foo". At this point, things start to happen differently. With the Maildir user, the folder "Trash/foo" deletes successfully. But with the mdbox user, Thunderbird pops up an error: The current command did not succeed. The mail server for account <accountname> responded: Invalid mailbox name: Trash/foo/. The folder does disappear from the Thunderbird folder pane, but if Thunderbird is "prodded" to refresh what folders it thinks are there, then the folder reappears. If we check the user's mdbox directory, we can see that indeed the mailbox has not been deleted. Whatever I then do, I am unable to delete this folder in the mdbox user through Thunderbird. The only way I have found to safely delete the folder is to use "doveadm mailbox delete", but this requires root privilege on the server, which is not really a practical solution. It maybe a Thunderbird problem, but the question then arises: Why does it work under Maildir but doesn't work under mdbox? Any ideas? Bill

Periodically, we will have users IMAP sessions get hung. Their client sees a message like: The server responded: 'SERVERBUG] Internal error occurred. Refer to server log for more information On the server, we see the following in the logs: IMAP(<username>): Transaction log dovecot.index.log: duplicate transaction log sequence (37) IMAP(<username>): fscking index file dovecot.index IMAP(<username>): fstat() failed with index file dovecot.index: No such file or directory After the fstat message shows up, there doesn't appear to be anything on the user side that can be done to fix the problem. We've seen multiple instances where the file dovecot is complaining about not existing is visible, readable, and writable by the user in question, but dovecot is convinced it's not. The only way we've found to fix this issue is to kill off all user connections. When the user reconnects, then all appears to work fine. We have not found a way to recreate this problem. Some details: # 1.2.15: /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf # OS: Linux 2.6.26-2-686 i686 Debian 5.0.8 Mail files are stored on NFS. All imap connections for a given user are are mapped to a particular server at any given time. We have a script in place that watches our logs for this order of events, so the problem self corrects relatively quickly. But it would certainly be nice not have this happen at all. [Dovecot] shared folder: messages become invisible

Hello, after dealing with shared folder within version 2.0 rc* I started using it with a group of users. user1 shares a folder to user2. user2 has access to messages of this shared folder. After a "random" time (minutes up to several days) user2 doesn't see those messages anymore. user1 (the owner) hasn't changed anything inside this folder. All messages are still in place and normal visible for him. If user1 copies (whit TB) a messages into that folder user2 can see sometimes all messages again. But after a "random" time it happens again. user2 sees an empty shared folder. Deleting dovecot.index.log and dovecot.index.cache does not help. Hello, Doveadm search is failing to update our Squat indexes. The search itself works fine but the dovecot.index.search* files remain unchanged. I tried: doveadm search -u test mailbox INBOX body sometext doveadm search -u test mailbox INBOX text sometext I also tried the exact syntax Timo expressed in an earlier post: doveadm search -A body asdf If I run the same search through IMAP, the index files update as expected. The searches finish with a clean exit status and nothing shows up in the logs. This got me over the hump: chmod 0600 /var/spool/mail/* All my user's mailboxes used to be group=mail mode=0660. I think these settings were left over from Solaris' mail.local: I can't reproduce these permissions now, even for new mailboxes. Maybe it's because the spool directory is now mode=1777 (not g+s mail). Not too keen on these permissions either, but it seems to work. Dovecot seems to transfer group permissions of the mailbox to its corresponding cache. If it can't set group ownership, you get the fatal error message above. If the original mailbox is mode 0600, dovecot is smart enough not to set group ownership. I couldn't find this information: shouldn't it be documented here? http://wiki2.dovecot.org/SharedMailboxes/Permissions This situation could also happen if a user is revoked from a group's membership. Would it be useful to make this a configurable behaviour whereby a chgrp() failure of cache files will fall back to chown'ing to user=owner, mode=0600 instead? Is there a reason I should prefer LMTP over LDA for local delivery? Performance? Security? The Wiki doesn't differentiates LMTP vs LDA with respect to sendmail configuration, so am I correct that I just need to replace mail.local with dovecot-lda, which will choose LDA/LMTP based on dovecot.conf? Also, can I consolidate authentication by configuring dovecot to use what sendmail uses (Cyrus SASL) or vice versa? The Wiki hints this is in the works. Lastly, toggling verbose_proctitle seems to have no effect on the output of ps. Is verbose_proctitle broken for Solaris? Thanks, Joseph Tam <jtam.home(a)gmail.com>

Hi, I tried to use ATrpms (http://dl.atrpms.net/all/dovecot-2.0.11-1_126.src.rpm) to rebuild the rpms. It is shown the error message as following: configure: error: unrecognized option: --docdir=/usr/share/doc/dovecot-2.0.11 Try `./configure --help' for more information. I checked `./configure --help', it did contain the '--docdir' option. I don't know how to fix it. Then I tried to remove ' --docdir=%{_docdir}/%{name}-%{version} \' and rebuild it again. It is shown another error message as following: mv: cannot stat `/var/tmp/dovecot-2.0.11-1_126-root//usr/share/doc/dovecot-2.0.11': No such file or directory I tried to modify dovecot.spec again, replace 'mv $RPM_BUILD_ROOT/%{_docdir}/%{name}-%{version} %{_builddir}/%{name}-%{version}/docinstall ' with 'mv $RPM_BUILD_ROOT/%{_docdir}/%{name} %{_builddir}/%{name}-%{version}/docinstall' and rebuild it again. I cant figure out permissions with Dovecot. I am new with this program and have tried setting the mail group to "mail" which is the group of my mailboxes which are located in /var/spool/mail. Hello, I have been searching all day for help on an issue I am having after installing and just having begun to configure dovecot. Hi, i'm in the process of evaluating dovecot. I have a rather big testing environment with four dovecot director frontend instances and four dovecot backend instances. Mailboxes are all in mdbox format and stored on nfs. Indexes are stored locally. dovecot nfs setup for high performance is used (mmap_disable = no, dotlock_use_excl = yes, mail_nfs_storage = yes, mail_nfs_index = no). The remaining problem is, if i disable a backend server and the backend server which took over the connection already has some old index files, this index files aren't updated. If there aren't any index files all is fine and the index files are created anew. I can solve this by regularly deleting old index files via a cronjob. But i'm not sure if i made a configuration mistake and dovecot somehow can detect old index files automatically and invalidate them? Thanks in advance Reinhard

Hello. I'm migrating from cyrus to dovecot and now after i converted mailboxes to Maildir. Some users already has imap folders with cyrillic chars. How could i autocreate folders with cyrillic chars? When i type something like: ... autocreate = utf8_chars autosubscribe = utf8_chars ... Hello, I have a user who has 153600 kBytes max. storage space. Now, however, he has used already 167396 kBytes and he can receive e-mails and can send. - Postfix is doing its job sending and receiving email. It puts the email in the unix user mailboxes (MBOX). - My Outlook client is authenticating with DoveCot using IMAP protocol without issue. [Dovecot] Dsync & random delete problem

Hello, I've updated my home mail server with dovecot 2.0.11 with idea of using dsync to synchronize two master servers (one at home behind an ADSL connection, and another in a DC with a gigabit connection). Dsync is launched every minutes by a cron job for each hosted mailboxes (in Maildir format). Obviously, a lock prevents to launch more than one dsync process at time. On a test mailbox, it worked perfectly, but when I decided to use it on my own mailbox: big drama :-). Some trashed messages reappear after the next sync, by dint of insisting, sometime it are duplicated. Occasionally, the synchronization has the desired effect, but messages reappear few hours later... So, my questions are: * Dsync is it supposed to be used to synchronize two mailboxes on continuously? * Are these problems known? I've found one thread about a random delete problem, so it seem to be? Do you need more informations to debug it? My informations: * Dovecot version: 2.0.11 * Distro: Debian Squeeze amd64 * FS: ext4 * Mailbox format: Maildir * Dsync command: "dsync -u {account} mirror ssh -i /var/vmail/sync/id_vmail -C {dest} dsync -u {account}" * Bug happen randomly, I haven't found a way to reproduce it. * Dovecot configuration: A part in particular is interesting? I recently set up SiS and imported a large chunk of mail. I've noticed one or two instances of this in the logs: Mar 28 09:03:50 mail dovecot: imap(xxx(a)yyy.zz): Error: Attachment file /mailstore/attachments/ce/73/ce737a45fe07495e2ae6466f9e381a30d5ec300406f11269d79bd5608cc0c922-822b3d2df67f8e4d7f5000009501e12a larger than expected (252218) Mar 28 14:52:34 mail dovecot: pop3(zzz(a)xxx.yy): Error: Attachment file /mailstore/attachments/c5/e1/c5e13d671d1d796680ae7166363afcb819af3d9cd04e01de7d65031b2f732bdf-b2ecf918b910904d826200009501e12a larger than expected (143959) Could that be an indication of a hash collision? No problem reports from the affected users. [Dovecot] doveadm mailbox status - getting the size in bytes

Hi, doveadm has an option to get the "vsize" of mailboxes, which is calculated by counting the number of linefeeds, but there does not appear to be way to simply get the size in bytes of a mailbox. I was wondering if there is something I am missing (I am using mdbox), or if not is it possible to implement this. Thanks
