Hello, My first time on this list, just switched from courier imap/pop3 system to dovecot. Imap part is great, pop3 seems to suffer, been fighting it for a week. Anyway, the reason for this post is that I have seen these pop up in my logs, and on one of my mailheads there were some 50 lines of this dovecot: 2008-10-26 09:33:54 Error: auth(default): BUG: Authentication client gave a PID 15661 of existing connection Is this really a bug or anything to be concerned with? I just installed 1.1.5. I am using Debian lenny/sid on amd64, phenom 9850 4g ram, nfs mounted maildir format xfs storage.

[Dovecot] Dovecot dies with PAM error?

Just setup a new server on the weekend with Ubuntu 8.10 beta, and Dovecot 1.1.4. Every now and then, the IMAP server dies, and won't let users authenticate. It happens about once or twice a day. Dovecot WAS running just fine, servicing mail all day long, and then suddenly it won't read the PAM config file, and then it won't let anyone log in until I log in and kill it. Any ideas? My IMAP client is either Thunderbird or Roundcube, if that's relevant.

RFC 5162 [3.1] states that a QRESYNC should return all changes in a SELECT/EXAMINE since the given modseq. In the following case, it looks like there is an off-by-1 error somewhere: C: A64 SELECT "TestMailboxTest" (QRESYNC (1224531494 6 1,3:5)) [MMS: MODSEQ given is 6] S: * OK [CLOSED] S: * FLAGS (\Answered \Flagged \Deleted \Seen \Draft) S: * OK [PERMANENTFLAGS (\Answered \Flagged \Deleted \Seen \Draft \*)] Flags permitted. S: * 4 EXISTS S: * 0 RECENT S: * OK [UNSEEN 1] First unseen. S: * OK [UIDVALIDITY 1224531494] UIDs valid S: * OK [UIDNEXT 6] Predicted next UID S: * OK [HIGHESTMODSEQ 6] [MMS: HIGHESTMODSEQ is 6 - the same as our cache, so there should be no need for an update] S: * 2 FETCH (MODSEQ (6) UID 3 FLAGS (\Deleted)) [MMS: ...but we get this FETCH that contains the MODSEQ ID of 6, which we have already told the server we are aware of] S: A64 OK [READ-WRITE] Select completed. In dovecot.conf protocol imaps is set to port 10943. ssl_listen = *:10943 The standard port for imaps is 993. So why it is set to 10943?

After doing one of those selecting works too... The important part to note (and where I suspect your problem is) is that the folder, as far as your client (Thunderbird) is concerned, is "Maildir/", the "Maildir/ new/" directory is part of Maildir's internal format. Just like the last few releases, this new release supports the new Sieve plugin already. How do I setup mixed authentication so that I can have say a couple of machines on my lan only use ssl without client certs, but have all the other machines connecting from remotely required to have ssl certs to connect to imap? Hi there I'd like to change my setup to log the _actual_ IMAP user's login, rather than the UNIX username. My system uses a virtual uid setup with qmail, where the mailboxes are owned by the 'vmail' user and authentication is via checkpassword using user%domain (ie email, just with % instead of @). So dovecot is recording _all_ logins as: imap-login: Login: user=<vmail>, method=PLAIN, rip=127.0.0.1, lip=127.0.0.1, secured I have the following log format specified: login_log_format_elements = user=<%u> method=%m rip=%r lip=%l %c I have also tried: login_log_format_elements = user=<%n@%d> method=%m rip=%r lip=%l %c However, this results in a log file entry of: imap-login: Login: user=<vmail@>, method=PLAIN, rip=127.0.0.1, lip=127.0.0.1, secured How do I configure dovecot to log the _actual_ username which the client supplies during authentication? Hello, I have a serious problem with dovecot and mbox format. dovecot returns the same UIDL for new messages and as result some MUAs don't retrieve new mail. UIDs returned by UIDL command look like 000000*1c*49006cec And there is a moment when dovecot stops incrementing marked digits. In other words when new message arrive to mbox, UIDL command returns used UID. I'll show with example: 1. Is there some simple textual frontend to the ManageSieve protocol somewhat easier to use than gnutls-cli? I.e. something to use like managesieve -u ef putscript myscript < /tmp/myscript Password: managesieve -u ef setactive myscript Password: simply doing the TLS authentication and length computation for me.

Dear All I have a test system where I am trying out 1.1.4 On the old 1.0rc6 (!) system I had edited: src/lib-storage/index/maildir/mail-storage.h to change: #define MAILDIR_FS_SEP ';' #define MAILDIR_FS_SEP_S ";" so I can get some mail folder hierarchy and '.'s in folder names - this all worked perfectly. Under 1.1.4 the MAILDIR_FS_SEP lines are no longer present. What is the current practice for doing what I was doing before ? Many thanks! Thanks Jose, Yes in the advanced options on email clients there is always a place to put the root folder path or (some similar name) and on the old server I used ~/mail/ in all of the email clients (thunderbird, outlook, seamonkey etc) and that worked fine. Doing that on the new dovecot based server produces the effect I've described - a folder called mail visible at the same level as inbox and the other IMAP folders inside that. On the older imapd based server doing the same thing produced a view of inbox with no mail folder ... just the IMAP folders in it displayed at the same level as inbox. Hi, I'm fairly new to Dovecot, migrating from a POP-only system with /var/mail only mailboxes. I'm currently on version 1.0.10 on Solaris 10, but I don't think that's relevant to the question. I'm a little overwhelmed by the number of configuration options at the moment. I took the "standard" mail_location = mbox:~/mail:INBOX=/var/mail/%u setting in dovecot.conf. This mostly works fine, but home dirs are NFS mounted and in the event that an NFS server is down users cannot read their mail. This is the case even for users who only use POP. So, my question is, do folks on this list have good suggestions for optimum ways to deal with this so that users (perhaps only POP users) can read their mail independent of home directories being available? I think I can make something up, but I'd rather take a standard approach if there is one. If this has already been discussed I apologise - just point me to it as I didn't find it. Hello, I have a FreeBSD 7.1 x86 system using dovecot with postfix and a mysql user database. Everything works completely fine, except that on occasion dovecot-deliver fails. When postfix tries to redeliver the message in about 15 minutes, it succeeds. So this isn't a very big problem, just an annoying puzzle. Here's the postfix log. At first, I thought it could be a postfix delivery problem. Oct 17 00:36:22 xxxxxxx postfix/pipe[16017]: 41E581CC5B: to=<xxxx(a)xxxxx.xxx >, relay=dovecot, delay=0.04, delays=0. 01/0/0/0.03, dsn=4.3.0, status=deferred (temporary failure) I turned on delivery logging to see what I'd get, and I simply get this: deliver(xxxxxx(a)xxxxx.xxx): Oct 17 00:36:22 Info: Loading modules from directory: /usr/local/lib/dovecot/lda deliver(xxxxxx(a)xxxxx.xxx): Oct 17 00:36:22 Info: Module loaded: /usr/ local/lib/dovecot/lda/lib90_cmusieve_plugin.so (normally, here it would print out more info about the user, as "auth input" lines, but it doesn't when it fails in this way) Dovecot is not dumping core, or even printing out any error message that I can see. I have all logging turned on (except for passwords), and I still seem to get nothing. I've attached my dovecot -n output, which doesn't seem to contain the logging I have set up for deliver: log_path = /var/log/delivery.log info_log_path = /var/log/delivery.log mail_debug = yes auth_debug = yes auth_verbose = yes Any clue as to what could be going on here? This issue is peripherally related to the following thread Re: [Dovecot] client certs with godaddy ssl cert This is running on CentOS 5.2 with latest Atrpms for Dovecot as of this weekend. # rpm -qa | grep dovecot dovecot-sieve-1.1.5-8.el5 dovecot-1.1.4-0_81.el5 With assistance from Rainer Frey (Inxmail GmbH), I am able to successfully use client ssl certs for imap access on both my Nokia e61i and Thunderbird 2.0.0.17, problem now is dovecot sasl and postfix smtp authentication. Using the same self created CA that generates and certifies the ssl client certs in Postfix and using Dovecot SASL, I always get client didn't send proper ssl cert when trying to do a tls based smtp connection from either the e61i or tbird. Trying to debug a delivery problem recently (with Postfix) and I realized that Dovecot wasn't logging any of the delivery information. I'm using Postfix to recieve mail, which is passing it on to Dovecot's deliver to actually deliver the emails into the mail boxes. In dovecot.conf, I have: protocol lda { log_path = /var/tmp/dovecot-deliver.log } [root]# dir /var/tmp/ total 2 drwxrwxrwt 2 root root 1024 Oct 22 12:30 . drwxr-xr-x 24 root root 1024 Aug 5 08:03 .. -rw------- 1 vmail vmail 0 Oct 22 12:11 dovecot-deliver.log The log file gets created OK, but then stays at zero size. Using: Postfix 2.3.3 Dovecot 1.1.4 (and previously 1.0.9) Any clues as to how I can have a delivery log?

Hi, We are moving our current IMAP based system to a new one with dovecot All I can get about the current IMAP (imapd) system is: IMAP4rev1 v12.264 dovecot version is: 1.0.rc15 In the existing system I can see IMAP folders that are in ~/mail/ with many mail clients (e.g. Thunderbird, Outlook, Seamonkey and horde). These folders are presented in the client software as being at the same level as the inbox - i.e. not inside the folder "mail" On the new system, horde webmail shows the other folders in ~/mail/ as being at the same level as the inbox. But ... all the other mail clients above now show a folder (directory) called mail with the imap folders inside. Is there some way to set this up so these other mail clients see the imap folders in ~/mail/ as being at the same level as the inbox as we have on the old server? [Dovecot] Permission issues with subscriptions

I am having some permission issues with my setup and I can't see where to make the change in the configuration files. My users can not create folders at all from their email clients nor from the web interface. I have noticed that each time I try to create a folder the subscriptions files permissions are set to 000. I know it seems at least unusual. But I would like to know if someone knows a software that can proxy multiple pop3 and imap connections to the same account and use only imap connections to the real server. I need it because I've to deal with two pieces of software that are out of my control: - 1 - A certified mail provider that states something that I would like to know if it's really true, or if it's worth keeping like a funny signature: "multiple imap sessions are possible. When an imap session is active, no pop3 connections are possible on the same account; when no imap connection is active, only one pop3 connection at a time is possible on the same account. This is a limitation of the pop3 protocol." - 2 - A software written to deal with certified mails that supports only pop3 used by many people on the same account, (and the same account is used also by multiple imap mail readers). I'm confident that the question has been asked before, but I can't remember the answer. I have -- dovecot 1.1.2 -- Mail storage (maildir format) on NFS -- Quotas on that file system -- A working rquotad -- mail_plugins = quota imap_quota in the protocol imap section -- quota=fs in the plugin section I get (using Apple Mail as a client) -- Notification that the account supports quotas -- No information about the size of the quota nor the usage I probably do something stupidly wrong. The WIKI tells me that fs quota support RPC (i.e., rquotad), so I'd expect my client to report the quota to me. Using quota(1) on the mail server works as expected.

Hi, I'm wanting to implement allow_nets so that some users can be limited to only use webmail while others can use client or webmail access. Adding the sql to pull a list of IPs/ranges for webmail only users was easy enough. For the users that are allowed to access from anywhere, do I need to specify 0.0.0.0/0 or something or can I just let the sql query return a blank field? The largest changes since v1.1.4: + Maildir/dbox: Try harder to assign unique UIDVALIDITY values to mailboxes to avoid potential problems when recreating or renaming mailboxes. The UIDVALIDITY is tracked using dovecot-uidvalidity* files in the mail root directory. + Many logging improvements - In some conditions Dovecot could have stopped using existing cache file and never used it again until it was deleted. - pop3 + Maildir: Make sure virtual sizes are always written to dovecot-uidlist. This way if the indexes are lost Dovecot will never do a huge amount of work to recalculate them. - mbox: Fixed listing mailboxes in namespaces with prefix beginning with '~' or '/' (i.e. UW-IMAP compatibility namespaces didn't work). - dict quota: Don't crash when recalculating quota (when quota warnings enabled). - Fixes to handling "out of disk space/quota" failures. - Fixed compiling with OpenBSD

Yes. I could spend more time testing this myself or examining the code. It looks to me that, with fs quota, dovecot refuses to store a mail (e.g. when the client moves a mail from one IMAP folder to another) if the user is beyond his soft limit. Is this correct/intended? Knowing nothing about the IMAP Quota extension, I would have expected that being in grace was OK. At least, this is what would happen if dovecot wasn't quota aware and the file system would enforce the limits.

Hi all, I have setup dovecot 1.1.4 and sendmail 8.14.3 with dovecot LDA on linux (RHEL5 on x86_64). I have deliberately set a very low quota (4MB) on a test account, while the actual disk usage is 5MB at the moment, in order to test overquota behaviour.. When I send an email to this account, sendmail accepts the email and tries to deliver it. Deliver fails to save in INBOX and returns an error, but the email stays in sendmail's queue.. Any suggestions on how to avoid this and produce a 5xx error for overquota users before accepting the email would be greatly appreciated.. [Dovecot] workaround for shared maildirs

Hello, this is my first post to the list. I have several mailservers running courier-imap, but am planning to convert one (and maybe more) to dovecot 1.1.4. In the process I am also looking to finally implement shared maildirs. As it is well known some clients (notable Apple's Mail) have problems in showing shared folders if the correct private namespace (INBOX) is set in the client, as only folders beneath the INBOX root are displayed. I have seen some solutions proposed, but none satisfactory. As the problem stems in the invisibility of secondary namespaces from Mail.app, I though that tricking the namespace prefix to push the shared mailboxes inside the private INBOX namespace could be a solution and tried the following: namespace public { separator = . prefix = INBOX.Public. inbox = no location = maildir:/SharedMaildirs/Public:CONTROL=~/Maildir/ control/Public:INDEX=~/Maildir/index/Public hidden = yes list = yes subscriptions = yes } note the bogus INBOX.Public prefix. Note also that CONTROL might be better not set as this is a Maildir (see Keyword sharing in http://wiki.dovecot.org/SharedMailboxes) Initially I had defined an additional public namespace with the same maildir and a normal prefix, but this seems not necessary. Well, after some tests from Thunderbird, Mail and cone (yes, the courier UA) I can say it works . Still have to check Outlook and Opera, but this is encouraging. As the public namespace Public is actually contained inside the private (INBOX), as if it was a private mailbox (with no messages) called Public, it is actually possible to create such a mailbox inside INBOX and end up with a private mailbox called Public containing private messages AND public mailboxes... Any mailbox that a user creats inside Public instead, will end up being a public mailbox as expected. Thanks or any comments. Giuliano

I have few backup ids configured. these are used only when old mail needs to be retrieved. usually these mailboxes contains more then 9,000 mails. while login to webmail, imap consumption is high, which creates performance related issues for regular mailboxes. to resolve this i have to move heavy mailbox to dedicated server. before doing that, I wanted to confirm if there any way to update dovecot.index.cache even if user is not checking his / her mails. kindly confirm, & provide direction to implement same. Hello, Seems there is some nasty problems with Dovecot 1.1.4... We use Maildir++ quota, and when moving mail to Trash, Dovecot just drop the connection... when the maildir is overquota. Is there any way to avoid that and just move the mail to the trash allowing user to expunge their mail easily without calling support to do rm -rf Maildir/cur ? Thanks, /Xavier

I didn't realize it at first, because we were also seeing other problems (eg assertion failure at line 39 of index-sync.c) which did require the index to be deleted. I've since made the following changes: 1) commented out the assertion at line 39 of index-sync.c (as per http://www.nabble.com/dovecot-panic-after-upgrade-1.0.15-to-1.1.2-td1909850…) 2) recompiled dovecot without optimization (ie, gcc -O0 instead of -O2) (as per http://www.mail-archive.com/dovecot@dovecot.org/msg12936.html) 3) reverted to using flock for file locking instead of fcntl (we'd been using flock with dovecot 1.0.10; 1.1.3 used fcntl by default in a couple of places, so I changed it back to see what would happen) After this, we've seen fewer problems, but there are still the occasional ones: - the original corrupted transaction log error which prompted this thread - we still see the occasional assertion failure at line 1091 of index-mail.c; this is the one that I'd hoped to solve by recompiling without optimization, but at least it seems to be happening less frequently than before - this doesn't happen often, but once in a while we see assertion failures at line 163 of src/pop3-login/client-authenticate.c or line 200 of src/imap-login/client-authenticate.c >Can you reproduce this by running imaptest (on a test account)? >http://imapwiki.org/ImapTest Actually this and your other suggestions may not be necessary; I think I just realized what's been going on. Hi there, I was having lots of trouble with the normal expire plugin so I decided to try and come up with a plugin that handles the trash directory in the same way as Courier (when the user logs out it should clean messages from the trash that have been there for more than X days.) I used the expire and trash plugins as a guide but there are probably a number of things done wrong here and I have plenty of questions. To use this you'd need to run autoreconf for the autotools scripts, compile, make, make install, then add "autoexpire" to the imap/pop3 mail_plugins lists and "autoexpire = Trash 7" to the plugin section. 1. Is there any documentation of how the hook system and virtual mailboxes work outside of the source code? 2. I'd like the Trash cleanup to occur at logout, but the closest I could find was mailbox close. This makes the behavior a little quirky. It seems like Dovecot closes the mailbox each time it performs an operation on it, so when the client gets a list of mail in the box it does a close and the oldest items in the returned list will actually be expunged. 3. Is SAVE_DATE the correct field to be looking for here? I want the expiration to be based on the amount of time the letter has spent in the trash folder. 4. For searching through the Trash folder, SEARCH_BEFORE doesn't seem to match up with SAVE_DATE. Is there some other way to limit the search results to the dates that will fall before a certain SAVE_DATE value? J.D.

[Dovecot] deliver not picking up INDEX setting?

I'm using the post-login script approach to give more customisation to where our users can store their mail. It detects the location and type of the mailbox at runtime and passes it through using the environment to imapd. This works great. However, I can't seem to make deliver do the same. I pass it the same MAIL and NAMESPACE settings in the environment: MAIL=maildir:/home/cur/tdb/Maildir:INDEX=/var/state/dovecot-indexes/tdb NAMESPACE_1=maildir:/home/cur/tdb/Maildir:INDEX=/var/state/dovecot-indexes/tdb NAMESPACE_1_INBOX=1 NAMESPACE_1_LIST=1 NAMESPACE_1_PREFIX=INBOX. NAMESPACE_1_SEP=. NAMESPACE_1_SUBSCRIPTIONS=1 NAMESPACE_1_TYPE=private (plus some others set by my MTA) So INDEX appears to be set correctly. deliver does correctly pick up the mailbox location and has no trouble delivering mail, but the indexes are put in the Maildir directory and not under the indexes directory. [Dovecot] Pop3 Problem

Hi I want to use Dovecot as POP3 server. Config file is changed to indicate IMAP , POP3 On starting Dovecot I get an error indicating "listen(110) failed: Address already in use" lsof -i :110 indicates Xinetd is using this port. Postfix is taking care of the 1st (delivery in maildir format in spool location), and dovecot should (I want to) be able to read messages from both locations. [1.1.4 with http://hg.dovecot.org/dovecot-1.1/rev/b61424a50786 applied] I'm trying to use namespaces as described here for UW-IMAP compatibility: http://wiki.dovecot.org/Namespaces But I'm getting a problem with the hidden namespaces showing up in the LIST output. [Dovecot] dovecot 1.2: dict no longer really support DICT_ITERATE_FLAG_RECURSE

Hi, In dovecot 1.1, I could use DICT_ITERATE_FLAG_RECURSE when iterating over a dict to retrieve all entries that start with a given prefix. This doesn't seem to work anymore in the new dict implementation in dovecot 1.2. Looking at the SQL queries actually generated, it seems as if dovecot 1.1 used to generate queries that use pattern matching (key LIKE "my/prefix/%") whereas dovecot 1.2 does not, so it's no wonder that it doesn't work in 1.2. This probably has to do with the pattern matching for dict keys in the config file. It would be enough for my purposes at the moment -- i.e. getting the metadata plugin to work with dovecot 1.2 -- if recursion were only possible for the last of fields in the pattern. [Dovecot] dovecot 1.1.4 maildir imap segfault in message_parse_header_next

I've tried to stress test dovecot 1.1.4 with imaptest for days without any assertion failure or crash. Just some "got too little data" messages. So far it's the most stable 1.1.x version. Today a user got this imap segfault with vanilla 1.1.4 (I don't know if it's something you have already fixed in current tree). Hi Timo, checking my new userdb-checkpassword back end is stumbled across the fact, that the new shared namespace definitions possible in dovecot stop deliver from working. Hi Can I provide login in name and password of multiple users in password like file and will dovecot allow multiple users to login from different ip address? I have set up 2 users. Both are system users. Dovecot allows login in for the first user but doesn't allow login for the second user. Any help will be appreciated. [Dovecot] Ignore prefix given by client?

Hi all, I'm new to Dovecot, but so far I've been really impressed with what I've seen. I hope someone can help with the following question. We're migrating from a setup where some of our users use mbox with UW imap. The problem is we've never enforced a folder prefix, so some have their folders in ~/, others in ~/mail and others in ~/Mail. We've also got some users using maildir with Courier imap. I decided the easiest way to get this working transparently for the users was to use the post-login scripting approach. My script manages to locate the user's mail and sets MAIL accordingly. This all works a treat. The problem is when a user specifies their own prefix in their mail client (if it's blank there are no problems). If they have ~/Mail none of the folders show up. I've had a play with namespaces in an attempt to fix that, but it doesn't seem to be doing what I want. [Dovecot] Multiple IMAP connections.

There is a project (catmail) to build a webmail front end using the Catalyst Framework and the question came up about multiple connections per user. Specifically the question was: "The IMAP server can support multiple connections, but do you think the backend should support multiple connections for separate folders or one IMAP connection for one session?" Since my servers are too low volume to have hit any kind of resource limits, and I believe Thunderbird mostly does the "Right Thing", I'm asking how you, that have higher volume systems, would prefer connections handled. Also I believe there was a thread, or two :-), on the way some of the other webmail programs handle connections. Not good? Thanks for all insights and suggestions. Rod --

Hi Timo - hope things are well :) Playing around with the CONDSTORE (RFC 4551) stuff while testing the IMAP lib I am writing and I think I have found a bug in Dovecot 1.2. [Dovecot] Search results as virtual folders

This may have been asked before - if so I apologize. Some mail clients - like Thunderbird - can provide a virtual folder or "saved search" to provide a list of mails that match certain criteria. Obviously, unless special client-side caching is implemented - which Thunderbird (my own client of choice) - does not, generation of these folders take time. Does Dovecot have any provision for generating such virtual folders? Possibly as the result of a sieve script? -- Daniel

Through experimentation, it appears that Dovecot 1.1.x doesn't correctly handle namespaces that *begin* with the character '~'; using ~ in the middle of a prefix, e.g. "flibble~/Mail", worked as documented, leading me to suspect a bug in the ~-expansion handling of Dovecot. (Dovecot 1.0.x worked as expected in this configuration.) Unfortunately, an hg bisect run on recent Dovecot-1.1 versions didn't expose the offending commit that introduced this problem, so this bug (assuming it is a bug) was probably inadvertently introduced during the 1.1-development series. Hi. I have an auth plugin where an extra_field is filled. Somewhere, in login process I need to log the authentication command and the extra_field, I was trying to do it in login-common/client-common.c, adding a new variable to login_log_format_elements and trying to get the fileld from environment, but, I could not find any way to do it, the getenv returns null everytime. Anyone can suggest something to do it ? Is there a way that I get the extra_fields from request in login process ? I just noticed that about 25% of our servers have imap processes hanging: 97996 xxxxxx 1 101 0 4096K 2052K CPU3 2 180:54 98.93% imap All with 98-100% cpu load, taking up 1 or more CPUs. dovecot 1.1.2, FreeBSD 6.2. is this caused by the deadlock issue thats fixed in 1.1.4? Cor

My users currently have mail delivered to mulitple MailDir locations via procmail. ~/mail/inbox/ ~/mail/graph/ ~/mail/spam/ I would like all these mailboxes to be exported via dovecot IMAP and appear as folders. However, I can't anything beyond the INBOX working. My approach is via 'namespaces'. I've read the client ssl cert section in the wiki and it talks about using a self signed cert, if I am using a commercial cert, in this case godaddy, how do I implement a self signed cert for the client side and have dovecot make use of this? [Dovecot] Different authentication for pop3 and imap

Is it possible to run different authentications for pop3 and imap ? What i need is to give access to some clients to pop3 only and to other to imap only. I'm using postgres as a backend. What i actually need is 2 separate queries for userdb, one to select with "WHERE imap_access = 1" and the other one with "WHERE pop3_access = 1" ( that's just an example ). I'm using 1.1.2 but i plan on upgrading to either 1.1.4 or 1.2.

[Dovecot] Password scheme module thoughts?

Hi, all. I have successfully deployed the code I wrote to handle Post.Office password hashes. However, I had to implement it as a hack to password-scheme.c. I'd like to implement it as a module so I don't have to hack Dovecot whenever a new release comes out. However, I had a few thoughts: 1. I used Dovecot's own MD5 routines in my implementation because I know how they behave. However, would it make sense to distribute the C sources for the MD5 routines, or would it make far more sense to have a Dovecot build tree already (so I can use Dovecot's function library)? 2. Is there good documentation for Dovecot's plugin API? I need it so I can figure out how to write the parts which the main program call so then the code can be used as a plugin. [Dovecot] Switching Servers now can't retrieve mail

I have just switched my mail server. I have copied (I think) the config files from the old to new. Exim is work fine on the new machine as I can see email file showing up in /var/mail/lists/new . However, dovecot reports nothing when I check mail . I am have turn on logging on both machines and I do not see anything that looks like an error. I have also looked to see if the dovecot.conf file is compatible between 1.0.14 and 1.1.2 and have found little. I am guessing this is a simple problem, can someone tell me what I have done wrong here. I have provided Working dovecot -n from both machines and the log output from a mail fetch. At first I told him to setup second account with Thunderbird to our mail server and then use Thunderbird to move the messages over. But he has over 100K messages so not as easy to do. Is there a tool out there for doing this sort of conversion? [Dovecot] Test environment question

My production DC machine owns the mail filesystems and is running DC V1.0.15 and mbox folder format. I am looking to test V1.1.3 on another machine, which NFS mounts the mail filesystems, but has its own local index FS. I have made this test environment my default connection in TBird, and it seems to work just fine. Also, I have made sure that my TBird client isn't connecting to the production server (it has multiple accounts but I have turned off the cehck for mail when starting and check for new mail every N minutes functions, and then check the ps table to make sure there are no imap connections) However, I'm seeing two errmsgs in the maillog on the test machine: > Sep 22 11:54:13 egg mail:err|error dovecot: IMAP(sdean): posix_fallocate() faile > d: Protocol not available > Sep 22 11:54:13 egg mail:err|error dovecot: IMAP(sdean): file_set_size() failed > with mbox file /var/spool/mail/sdean: Protocol not available which appear to happen AFTER mail arrives at the production server....it seems to happen on my test server the next time my client goes to access mail AFTER mail has arrived at the production server. Subsequent client requests of the test server execute without error until AFTER the next time mail arrives at and my inbox is updated with it. Again, if I hadn't looked at the logs, I wouldn't know there was a problem...I can see my new mail just fine from the test server. The questions: Is this anything I should be concerned about? Is this a bug or a legit problem coming from my improper use of two servers against the same data. FWIW, I am using fcntl for both mbox read and write locks. procmail in the MDA on the production server, and its locking hierarchy <dotlock,fcntl>, which Timo previously approved. Thanks! Hi Timo, i tried a littel bit playing with shared mailboxes namespace shared { separator = / # %%u gets expanded to the remote user. Instead of %%u you can # also use %%n and %%d. prefix = "shared/" location = maildir:/usr/local/virtual/%d:CONTROL=/usr/local/virtual/%d:INDEX=/usr/local/virtual/%d inbox = no list = yes subscriptions = yes hidden = no } should at last show all other users mailboxes when .DEFAULT acl is authenticated lr and dovecot-acl in /usr/local/virtual/%d is authenticated lr too but instead only shared is shown in thunderbird playing with %%u etc in combinations does not lead to working results too (sometimes shared^^ was shown, might be user(a)domain.de isnt working for shared maildirs, @ could be a problem to maildir....?) your example was namespace shared { separator = / # %%u gets expanded to the remote user. Hi guys, It would be really nice if there were an easy way to see how much space an individual imap account used when a user logged out; something like pop3_logout_format = size=%s. I appreciate that this isn't so easy in imap though - I was thinking of using the quota plugin with no limit or something like that. Hello, I have some trouble with the current setup (it's a testing environment): 2 server with Dovecot 1.1.4 from source (OS Debian testing 2.6.26) (name: "exim" and "exim2") 1 NFS server (OS Debian testing 2.6.26) I use NFS v.4, indexes shared over NFS. The relavant part of Dovecot configuration: dotlock_use_excl = yes mail_nfs_storage = yes mail_nfs_index = yes mmap_disable = yes lock_method = dotlock Maildir format. /etc/exports on NFS server: /mnt When I access a mailbox with 2 different clients (for example Outlook Express that uses "exim" and Thunderbird that uses "exim2") and in the same time some message is delivered to the mailbox (the safe. I can try to move indexes on the local disk, the trouble with dovecot.index disappear but I have again problem with dovecot-uidlist. I can reproduce this kind of problem easly: 2 clients on the same mailbox connected to two different imap server and a simple bash script that send 2 email every 1 second to the mailbox. There is some option/configuration that I can try to change?

hi, Could anyone give some info on this plugin? When i read the wiki (http://wiki.dovecot.org/Plugins/Zlib) i'm still left with some questions... I use Maildir to store my mails, if i enable this zlib-plugin, should i 'manually' compress all messages? or wil the uncompressed messages still be accessible by dovecot? wil new messages be compressed automagically? how should the compressed messages be named? a message now has the name '1223224520.2783_1.opensuse:2,S' how would a compressed message be named? [Dovecot] Folders within folders?

I'm trying to migrate my emails from an existing server (University of Washington IMAP toolkit) to dovecot. My clients are all using Thunderbird. I'm moving to a new Ubuntu based server (old one was Centos4) and selected dovecot solely because it was the default option. I'm not committed to it if it isn't the right tool for my application. My existing server allows hierarchical folders and these are used to organize 20 years worth of carefully sorted emails. I can create a new folders on the dovecot server but Thunderbird doesn't allow me to create new sub-folders within them. I think T-bird is configured OK since this works on the old server. Is this a dovecot limitation or have I configured it incorrectly?

I'm having problems getting dovecot to set imap quotas that are defined as individual quotas for virtual users using mysql. I'm using postfix/dovecot 1.1.3, just built from source about a week ago. I've been testing using telnet and getquotaroot. when I define the quota in dovecot.conf quota = dirsize quota_rule = *:storage=102400 I get the following response from Dovecot: # telnet 127.0.0.1 143 Connected to 127.0.0.1. * OK Dovecot ready. . login test222(a)example.com password . However, when I define that data in the dovecot-sql.conf file, it doesn't appear to pick the data up, either as an override, or, if I delete quota_rule = *:storage=102400 from dovecot.conf, I get no quota at all . getquotaroot inbox . I'm working at the next part of the virtual domains mail server. I'm moving this account (raanders(a)acm.org is a forwarder) which has a bunch of procmail rules to file into folders. My question is if it is more efficient is use? if { ... } elsif { ... } elsif { ... } else This seems to be the way many of the example scripts do it but I found at least one that used if { ... } if { ... } Which is more procmail like and for me reads easier.
