Does anyone have any ideas what this may be? Aug 25 12:19:01 G520X2 dovecot: imap-login: Disconnected (auth failed, 0 attempts): rip=192.168.1.1, lip=192.168.1.10 Aug 25 12:19:01 G520X2 dovecot: imap-login: Disconnected (auth failed, 0 attempts): rip=192.168.1.1, lip=192.168.1.10 Hits the server every minute. Running v 1.1.2 on OS X 192.168.1.1 is the router 192.168.1.10 is the server on which dovecot is running. Just started noticing it. Thanks, B. Bodger

Hi I'm doing a network install of Dovecot 1.1.2. All is fine apart from a little annoying mistake I've found: I do this: > ./configure --prefix=/appli/tools_Linux/dovecot/1.1.2 --localstatedir=/var && make && make install however, since the --localstatedir is equal to a default value, it is still being constructed as "PREFIX/var" for some reason and in effect produces binary with following strings being built-in: > strings dovecot | grep var /appli/tools/dovecot/1.1.2/var/lib/dovecot /appli/tools/dovecot/1.1.2/var/run/dovecot /appli/tools/dovecot/1.1.2/var/lib/dovecot/ssl-parameters.dat /appli/tools/dovecot/1.1.2/var/lib/dovecot/ssl-parameters.dat var-expand.c var_expand_table_build So, the question is, is this a bug or my understanding wrong? I just need a network install, using local /var directiories for runtime data. Imagine that I have no write permissions to the installation (--prefix) folder. If you can reproduce it, this should be it, if you can't let me know to email you all the environment details. [Dovecot] Override config in deliver command line

Hi all In dovecot deliver LDA, is there a way to override some configuration settings for particular users? Tha full story is: I have a simple postfix/dovecot setup. No virtual users, delivery is done in /home/mail/%u. For a specific user, I would like to deliver to a maildir. Since mail_location is not explicitly configured, I simply created ~/Maildir for that user, relying on the default automatic mailbox location procedure used by dovecot. But I would like to be able to override this setting: for example if I wanted to use a name different from Maildir, this trick would not be sufficient. So it would be nice to have some way to change mail_location (and why not, other config parameters) only for particular users (and for me, doing this on the command line would be good: something like Postfix where you can override config parameters simply writing the new settings in master.cf on the daemon's command line). I noticed the -c command line switch, but I would prefer not to have entirely different configuration files for my users, where a single change must be manually propagated on all the files. I use dovecot-1.0.15 on CentOS5. Maybe this question can be read as a feature request too. Thanks Luigi

Indexes are separate in every server, not shared via NFS. About 20 000 users total. When old indexes (1.0.15) were present, mailboxes with UID validity problems did not fix themselves, but after i removed index directories in all machines, seems like it started to repair uid validity problems. The first panic seems to be tied to UID validity problems. Hi, I am new to dovecot and I am a bit confused with how namespaces/prefixes/separators are handled by the clients and dovecot... I tried to understand the desciption from the conf file but without success. With each conf I create the following path /f1/f2 on the client (thunderbird) and get the following on the dovecot server: PREFIX= and separator=/ => .INBOX.f1.f2 + .INBOXTrash PREFIX=INBOX/ and separator=/ => .f1.f2 and no Trash PREFIX=INBOX. and separator=. => .f1.f2 and no Trash Could someone point me to some IMAP for dummy web page...? ;D Or, what is the best conf able to handle most clients? [Dovecot] Distributed indexes, maildir_copy_preserve_filename, and Microsoft

Hi, I've just completed a migration from Courier to a Dovecot 1.0.7 (patched RHE 5) which is working great, except for this weirdness of an issue that is impacting a handful of users. My question is that will turning off maildir_copy_preserve_filename help or hurt in a situation where there are multiple servers with their own local INDEX files (uidlist is shared)? The problem is that a few users on a few versions of Microsoft Mail clients are not showing a few messages. They can see the messages just fine in webmail and other, more typical, E-mail clients. I know that the right solution is to upgrade to 1.1.2 and use shared indexes. The plan is to upgrade in a month or so. In my defense, this setup was not of my making, The two things issues that might have an impact are that we have shared (NFS) maildirs on multiple servers with their own local indexes and maildir_copy_preserve_file turned on. The uidlist (CONTROL) is shared and we have sticky connections turned on in our load balancer. The vast majority of clients do not have this issue. Quite frankly I have no idea these clients are ignoring the dovecot-uidlist. Would turning off maildir_copy_preserve_filename help with this setup? Another option might be easier is to delete the users INDEX and let the clients rebuild them. Since this is only a handful of users and we are migrating to 1.1.2 anyway, my preference is to make the bare minimum of changes to help address this problem. The changes need not be perfect nor anytime more than a suggestion or preference. I just want to make things better for a little while. Many thanks in advance. ---Jack P.S. [Dovecot] Option to evaluate IMAP prefixes relative to $HOME, rather than the IMAP root?

Greetings, Is there a mechanism (or relatively small source-code change) which would cause Dovecot to evaluate IMAP prefixes relative to $HOME rather than the configured IMAP root? * * * Background: We're currently migrating from a WU-IMAP mailserver configuration which stores user mail in a global NFS-exported $HOME, and we've run into well-known issues handling client-specified IMAP prefixes. If a user specifies an IMAP prefix, Dovecot evaluates the path given relative to the IMAP root path specified in mail_location, rather than resolving it relative to the user's home directory as our old WU-IMAP installation would do. (For example: if a user has been keeping their mail in $HOME/foobar, and mail_location's folder path is set to %h/mail, then when that user comes to retrieve their mail with an IMAP prefix set to "~/foobar", then Dovecot will attempt to return the contents of the folder $HOME/mail/~/foobar -- which doesn't exist -- rather than $HOME/foobar.) At the moment, we have several hidden namespaces set up to support various common user-side variations -- "mail/", "Mail/", "~/Mail/", etc. -- each with a different custom mail_location string. Whilst this works for these common cases, it's fairly ugly, and results in extra empty directories appearing in users' $HOME. If there was some mechanism for telling Dovecot to evaluate IMAP prefixes relative to $HOME rather than the mail folder root specified in mail_location, that would provide us with a much neater and general-purpose solution. Hi, I'm new here in the list so Hello to everyone! I'm compiling dovecot 1.0.10 with pam support in SLES 9 but i'm getting errors in config.log and it won't compile with pam support. I haven't heard anything on this bug. Is this a bug? I'm using dovecot 1.1.2 with the following patch applied: http://hg.dovecot.org/dovecot-1.1/rev/d674c05d725d Another section from my logs. I know the backtrace is just numbers, let me know how to compile to get more useful information if you need it. So far no one is beating down my door, so I don't think users are seeing any ill effects. But I would sleep better knowing why it's happening. Now I've run into a problem: whenever I try to move/copy a message in/from the spam mailbox, Thunderbird (and also Sylpheed, haven't tried anything else) says: The current command did not succeed. If Timo wants, I can send the dovecot.(index|index.cache|index.log) files for when this happens, but I would need to know what to send (both the folder being moved from and folder being moved to, or just one of them) and anything else needed, and the email to send them to. Sending the folder itself might be problematic, but might be possible. [Dovecot] Simplest (static?) build & config for loopback access?

I am installing Dovecot for the sole purpose of maintaining a local mail store that I could 1) manage with any client; 2) keep duplicated on several machines, using Unison; 3) hopefully, index using Spotlight (http://article.gmane.org/gmane.mail.mh-e.user/1308 ...). In particular, I have no intention to allow connections from anywhere but localhost. I've followed the instructions at http://wiki.dovecot.org/HowTo/Rootless and it all seems to work quite well, but I'm not sure about 3 things: 1) Initially Dovecot would not respond to Thunderbird ("Could not connect to server localhost; the connection was refused"). Eventually, a "Trying ::1..." in the telnet log (see below) made me find hidden pref "network.dns.disableIPv6" and set it to FALSE. Which solves the problem -- but is this really needed, or have I done something wrong? 2) The Dovecot I built on OS X 10.4 appears to work fine when copied on another Mac running 10.5. Now, I'd love to avoid installing developer tools on both machines, but I fear this an illusion (some libraries are changing under us, e.g. libiconv.2.2.0.dylib --> libiconv.2.4.0.dylib). Does this mean I should try a static build? If so, what are the flags and how do I go about specifying a minimal set of libraries to include for my purposes? 3) Probably offtopic here, but has anyone seen a better way to index mail in Spotlight than just as plain text? E.g. to hook up Apple's importer (Mail.mdimporter in /System/Library/Spotlight) or Thunderbird's (https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=290057) which I guess can better deal with quoted-printable and other encodings? [Dovecot] POP3 UID file problem

Hello. I upgraded from RHRL4 to RHEL5 and my dovecot version changed from dovecot-0.99.11-8.EL4 to dovecot-1.0.7-2.el5. I also transferred all /home directories of users. The problem is that users have POP3 mail client set that it leaves mail on mailserver for 30 days. When they try to download messages from new server, client (Thinderbird) want to download all messages for those 30 days (he of course already has all those messages..). I suspect UID POP3 database index file format has changed.. How to "convert" dovecot 0.99 POP3 UID files to those used in newer version or how to go around that? Hi All! There is a issue with dovecot-antispam and the new dovecot-1.1.x (dovecot-1.1.1) The imap server dies when sending mail, the mail goes away but it says that the imap server has crached in squirrelmail. I get the standard signal 11 crach in the dovecot loggs another question? My dspam users has the email as username somthing(a)domain.com and in dovecot.conf i need to specify the user when training, is there a w way to get the resiptient address in the dovecot.conf? i am only able to get %u ie the username ;-( Could you patch the antispam plugin to be able to take then resiptient as dspam user? ie the mail address , you can have a option in dovecot that says use resiptient address as user or something it would be great if you had time to check this out ;-) Thanks in advance

I know that every message has a 'received' header, which is basically the date/time stamp of the SENDERS CLIENT - so if their system's time is off, that date/time header will be off. In my mind, there should be two primary date/time columns: Sent Date/Time = Date/time of the Client system when message was sent (this is already there as the plain 'Date' column) and Received Date/Time = Date/time the receiving SERVER DELIVERED it I can see the benefit for the third 'Client' side Date/time stamp, which is the current 'Order Received' in TBird. I'd like to see support added for grabbing the last date/time from the LDA that delivers the message, but that obviously request is for the TBird devs (or most likely an extension request), but... I have a x86 Linux box running Fedora 4. Up until 2008 I was using pine 4.64 and Dovecot 0.99.x. In early 2008 I transitioned to Alpine 1.10, and didn't notice any major changes. I upgraded to Dovecot 1.0.15 this past weekend. My dovecot -n settings are at the bottom of the email. I've noticed a change since Dovecot was upgraded. I used to reorder items within my INBOX in al/pine by "saving" messages back to the INBOX, which I was connecting via IMAP . Now when I try to do it I get an error in alpine that says: [Can't copy mails inside same folder] then: [Save to folder "{localhost:143/i...r=jherbach}INBOX" FAILED] While these are alpine messages, they appear to be from the dovecot upgrade. I really miss the ability to reorder messages in my inbox since I often use it as a queue of important items. Does anybody have any ideas why I'm seeing this error message? Or better yet, how to potentially (re) configure the system to allow me to resave messages into the same folder? [Dovecot] config file parsing, tab characters

Hello, I am using the latest dovecot 1.1.2 with postfix, and using doveco deliver command for LDA. I really love dovecot, and how it has progressed over the years. However I have noticed that if I put a TAB character in the dovecot.conf file, it sometimes does not parse the file correctlty, and complains about missing postmaster_address etc, even though they are there. So I reformated my config file, with just spaces, no tabs. I am very careful about that now. However I still seem to have a problem in some places with spaces. For example, in the LDA section: If I have 3 or 4 spaces, after the lda line in the definition, like so: #----------------------------------------------------------------------------- # LDA Settings #----------------------------------------------------------------------------- protocol lda { postmaster_address = postmaster(a)mydomain.com hostname = mydomain.com .... it does not work. I must have only 1 space between the end of lda and the curly bracket. Like this: #----------------------------------------------------------------------------- # LDA Settings #----------------------------------------------------------------------------- protocol lda { postmaster_address = postmaster(a)mydomain.com hostname = mydomain.com .... This seems very flaky. I am not certain I will always be able to check the file when making changes. So my question is: 1. Is there someway to check the validity of the dovecot.conf file. I notice dovecot -n does not print the entire config. 2. Is there any chance the code used to parse the config file, could be updated to be more robust, and to include support for tabs? Thank you. [Dovecot] How Can I Tell How Dovecot Was Installed?

I'm trying to help someone with Dovecot, and it looks like this one is a few versions behind. They say that they're not sure if it was installed Via an RPM or a source tarball. Dovecot is use MySQL. This is a RHEL5 server. There are RPMs listed as installed (rpm -qa) but I don't know how I can tell what was used to install the currently used set up. (also asking on the Postifix list) Is there something in a conf file or something that shows me how it was installed? Thanks Blake

Hello, I'm a developer on the Orbited project (http://www.orbited.org) which provides a TCPSocket interface in javascript (emulated over HTTP using ajax and comet.) This TCPSocket allows true bi-directional communication between a web browser and an arbitrary tcp server. One of the other developers pointed me to a recent dovecot thread about webmail. Hi folks, because I accidently missed a syslog entry from previous reports, here's a new one with both syslog lines. Same problem as always when saving mail from one folder to another with Pine 4.64. Does nobody else get this when copying/moving mail between folders? The assertion refers to src/lib-storage/index/index-sync.c, line 39 (function index_mailbox_set_recent_uid). Hello All, I've been studying dovecot for replacing my company's current system and I got a little worried about an aspect of the dovecot's design. I was surprised that dovecot doesn't use prefork for its mail processes, forking a new processes for each new client connection. Talking in the #dovecot channel I was gave a scenario of a system supporting ~40k users with 4 servers just fine. I wonder how well dovecot would scale if we increase this number of users by some order of magnitude like, say, 4M users. It is well known that preforking is a good pratice if you want to achieve a higher performance. When I was asked about it I readily answered: "of course it does". For my surprise later, i doesn't. Do you have any plans to support preforking in the near future? Best regards, giorgenes

When I try to connect to my mail server I get this message. "Could not connect to mail server chen.home.org; connection was refused" The last message in /var/log/mail.err is:- Aug 13 21:02:27 chen dovecot: Fatal: Time just moved backwards by 3603 seconds. Time on my system is a little wonky so I reset the time and then I found out I'd broken Dovecot. I didn't realise that doing this would have an impact on dovecot. I read the web page and to be honest I'm not confident about hacking source code. I've reinstalled dovecot which worked except it hasn't solved my time travel problem. By the way since my first install of dovecot the config file seems to have changed a little but since I've tried to migrate my settings over the new file and been met with the same problem I don't think it's that. I'm seeing strings of failed POP3 login attempts with obvious bogus usernames coming from different IP addresses. Today's originated from 216.31.146.19 (which resolves to neovisionlabs.com) This looks like a botnet attack. I got a similar probe a couple days ago. Is anyone else seeing these? The attack involves trying about 20 different names, about 3-4 seconds apart. [Dovecot] IMAP maildir performance difference between dovecot-uidlist versions?

Hi, Is there an IMAP performance difference using Maildir between using version 3 and version 1 of the dovecot-uidlist (either dovecot 1.0.7 or 1.1.2)? It isn't entirely clear to me there is any difference as the filename may contain the size/vsize information. The servers will eventually be running 1.1.2 with the maildir_copy_preserve_filename turned on. I'm doing a batch migration from courier to dovecot 1.0.7 and eventually dovecot 1.1.2. These servers are, and will continue to be, IMAP only (i.e. dedicated control/dovecot-uidlist files). The migration script is run once - no build on the fly. It does a readdir() to get the full filenames and make sure that list entries are only for existing files. As a result, there is almost complete freedom in the output format for the dovecot-uidlist. [Dovecot] PAM session closes too soon

Hi. I'm trying to keep most of my data encrypted when possible, only keeping the decryption key in memory (and thus vulnerable to local attacks) when I'm actually using my data. In practice, this means using pam_mount to mount my home directory from an encrypted device. It almost looked like I could get this to work with mail as well, even when read via IMAP from a remote client: I placed my mail in the encrypted home directory, added pam_mount to /etc/pam.d/dovecot, and set session=yes in Dovecot's PAM configuration. Except that it didn't, quite: pam_mount worked just fine and mounted the encrypted disk using the IMAP password... and then immediately unmounted it, since for some reason session=yes means that Dovecot closes the session _immediately_ after opening it. This seems just silly. If a PAM session is to be used, then it seems obvious to me that its length should be exactly the length of the IMAP session. I can't see any reason for the current behavior, except maybe that it was a bit simpler to code and is sufficient for pam_mkhomedir (and only that). Can this be fixed with reasonable effort? Also, for pam_mount to work correctly, there must not be any file descriptors open in the mounted file system when the session closes, as otherwise unmounting is impossible. Will dovecot release all fds into the mail and index files when the session ends, or can it be made to do so? (UTSL is an acceptable answer.) Thanks in advance. Lauri Alanko la(a)iki.fi

Just installed dovecot 1.1.2. downloaded from dovecot.org. Seemed to compile and install OK but I get the following error when I try to start it "child 28410 (auth) returned error 89 (fatal failure)" I just want to use it for SMTP/SASL authorization, not Pop3 or IMAP, as yet It looks as though I haven't installed some component or other but what? Hello! I'm running squirrelmail 1.4.8 (I know this is not the latest version) and know I'm having troubles with: 1.) Folder list view 2.) Save to sent or Drafts folder. Configuration worked well. I think it has to do with the upgrade from dovecot 1.0 to 1.1 and the LIST command. Thunderbird/alpine work well. Commands from rawlog are: A002 LIST "" "~/Mail/Drafts" A002 OK List completed. or A002 LIST "" "~/Mail/sent" A003 CREATE "~/Mail/sent" A002 OK List completed. A003 NO Mailbox exists. When searching for multiple terms at once ("any of") with Thunderbird/Dovecot (using FTS Squat indexes), it takes much longer (not double the time, or a bit more than that, but really much, much longer) than when I search for only one term. Here are some figures (the IMAP commands are shown as issued by Thunderbird and recorded by Dovecot rawlog). While searching, I can see the 'imap' process using 100% CPU time. [Dovecot] Migrating mbox to maildir

Sorry to bother everyone but I was wondering if it is possible for Dovecot to handle mbox AND maildir at the same time? Example: I want to convert from UW Imap using mbox to Dovecot using maildir. Do I need to convert ALL my users mbox mailboxes to maildir right away or can I convert them one at a time? I'd like to use maildir with all my new users, but I'd like to be able to continue using mbox for my old users and slowly convert them as I get time. Is this possible? I know Dovecot supports both formats, I just couldn't find anything in the install notes about using both at the same time. Thank you, mike

[Dovecot] Webmail app ... again.

There was a thread several weeks (or months) ago on webmail applications. I didn't like any of the options and only found few that I did but they were either expensive or not maintained. So ... I raised the question on the Catalyst Framework list about Perl based webmail apps and got nothing usable. It came down to what would it take to build a Perl (Cat) webmail app. Several others on the list got interested so we decided to build it. The main issue I run into is my lack of understanding of the ins-and-outs of the IMAP specification and the features that come with using Dovecot. (Oh yeah. Dovecot was the preferred IMAP server!) Another project I'm working on uses IMAP and what I found was there is a great quantity of Perl modules for dealing with IMAP. A great quantity! Unfortunately many of them assume a deeper knowledge of IMAP than I have so are very confusing. What I'm looking for is a good reference, besides the RFC, on IMAP. Anything out there? Electronic or dead-tree is fine. (A book of Dovecot would be neat too.) TIA, Rod --

Hello all, Today I had problems on one of the servers. Dovecot stopped working and I got lots of "Request queue is full" on logs. [Dovecot] restricting shared folders access

Hi all, I have a dovecot setup with virtual users and a passwd-file passdb. All users have the same uid and gid. Recently I got my public folders working using namespaces and they work great. However, now I'm trying to share a folder between a limited number of users and so far I failed to get it working. Symlinks aren't an option because users need to be able to create subfolders of the shared folder so I'm trying to do it with namespaces but I'm not sure how to restrict access to a limited number of users. I tried doing it with groups. I made sure that the shared folder's group is set to 'staff' and the mode is 070, I also changed the group of a few virtual users to 'staff'. However, when I try accessing the shared folder I get a permission denied error (although the user is in the staff group). Can someone please recommend the best way to do this? Should I look into ACL's? Many thanks, Andrew.

[Dovecot] Plugin when downloading mail

Is there a way to modify mail messages when they are downloaded using a special login. eg. my normal login for dovecot is martijn(a)youngguns.nl but when I log in using martijn(a)dosomething.youngguns.nl I would like to download my mail which are processed using a Perl script. The Perl script will modify the content of the message (the message body). So I don't want to change the header or IMAP flags. Martijn

I see these errors more often than I'd like from Dovecot-1.1.2 on Mac OS X 10.5.4 (names and numbers elided): Corrupted index cache file %s: Corrupted virtual size for uid=%d: %d ! = %d Corrupted index cache file %s: Broken virtual size for mail UID %d Corrupted index cache file %s: used_file_size too large How bad are these? [Dovecot] Has anyone ever seen outlook do single sign on with dovecot/etc?

Hey all, I'm curious, has anyone been able to get outlook to do single sign on with a linux IMAP/SMTP back end? I have it doing NTLM authentication via the dovecot winbind module with Samba 3.2 just fine, but I have yet to see it try to use the cached windows logon credentials.. It appears to do an NTLM exchange with a blank password and then prompt for a password and then do an exchange with the given password. It does the same thing if PLAIN authentication is used. I'm starting to suspect MS deliberately hobbled outlook so that it uses the SSPI to exchange an entered password but not ever the logon credentials.. Does anyone know different? What a topsy-turvy world when thunderbird using SSPI works better on Windows than outlook. :| Thanks, Jason

[Dovecot] Disabling access for one user

I'm converting my system from mbox to Maildir one user at a time, and I'd like to disable access for the user I'm working on. Is there a way to tell Dovecot to lock out a specific user? Perhaps with a control file in the home directory? At the same time, how can I get sendmail+procmail to tempfail incoming messages for one user until I'm done?

I'm talking about mbox Sent folder, where some mailers append through imap server a copy of each message they send. Sometimes, just three header lines got appended instead of the whole mail message, such as: >From xxxxxxxx(a)xxxxxx.xxxxxx.xxxxx.xx.xx Fri May 23 12:30:14 2008 X-UID: 2852 Status: RO This happened in the past (dovecot-1.1-beta/rc with Evolution and with Thunderbird), and happened last week with dovecot-1.1-rc5 (+ last week hg patches). Hi, since upgrading to 1.1.x i still have this bugs "Next message unexpectedly lost " I read this Maillist some months ago and i believe that im not the only one... The Panics and crashes in 1.1.1 are gone by upgrading to 1.1.2 but these "Next message unexpectedly lost " bugs are really annoying if users can't download complete mails. is there something new to this issue. all recommend changes did not help. The only thing i could do is downgrade to 1.0.15 and all works fine. i can not keep the 1.1.x versions in my repo untill this case is solved. :( Thanks Andre

[Dovecot] [PATCH] Support GSS-SPNEGO natively

I cooked this up while trying to figure out why thunderbird on Windows w/ SSPI was not working, but it turned out thunderbird does not use it, so I haven't been able to test it yet. I'm presenting it for discussion only, unless someone else can try it :) Modern versions of MIT kerberos support GSS-SPNEGO natively, but are only willing to negotiate for kerberos tickets and not NTLM messages. This is how the SPNEGO works in libapache-mod-auth-kerb-5.3 which simply passes SPNEGO packets directly to gssapi if the library is new enough. There is even a configure feature test for the gssapi library in that packages configure script. Note that Debian etch's standard kerb libaries (1.4) are not good enough for this. Having this work means the other gssapi policy knobs in dovecot, like auth_gssapi_hostname, work properly. Instead of 'whatever it is that samba does'. I guess it fixes the concerns about winbind accesses blocking (although don't the gssapi calls block??) In light of this it is really only useful to use winbind if you want to support NTLM as kerberos will do the necessary exchanges with the kdc for an Active Directory domain. [Dovecot] [PATCH] Allow GSSAPI to work with multihomed hosts

I saw some past chatter on this in the list archives, but here is another stab and another rational. This patch follows a similar patch to openssh in that it allows any key in the specified keytab to match the incoming host key. This is necessary for multihomed hosts. See: https://bugzilla.mindrot.org/show_bug.cgi?id=928 IMAP/POP seem to be a strong candidate to be multihomed because they are very likely to have an internal to a firewall and external to a firewall name. Due to the way MIT kerberos handles host name resolution via reverse IP lookup this can often result in multiple principle names and there is simply nothing to be done about it. This is my situation.. When you add windows into the mix, which uses a totally different set of rules to determine the principle all hope seems to be lost to have a single service principle name for an imap server :( I was able to make things work for my environment using only the auth_gssapi_hostname feature if only MIT kerberos was used, but as soon as windows SSPI was involved it choose a different hostname. Thus we want to have GSSAPI to match any service principle in the keytab. As far as security concerns go, the admin can configure the keytab for dovecot to be seperate from the system key tab and contain only valid imap SPNs, but in truth it probably doesn't matter. However I prefer to put sieve scripts to /var/lib/sieve and when I added additional field to lookup with this location it started to work. I think there could be same sender on envelope. In dovecot-sieve/src/sieve-cmu.c around line 380 is a call to smtp_client_open(src->addr, NULL, &f); NULL could be replaced with src->fromaddr Maybe some more patching may be necesary. Hi, All parts of dovecot except deliver uses the result of hostpid_init() in src/lib/hostpid.c as a hostname which only asks gethostname(). deliver honours environment variable HOSTNAME in src/deliver/deliver.c: getenv("HOSTNAME"); and uses the hostname of hostpid_init() as a fallback. Wouldn't it be consequent to evaluate the environment variable HOSTNAME in hostpid_init() with fallback to gethostname() and remove the special behavior from deliver? The dovecot master process should export $HOSTNAME to all childs in this case. Motivation: Dovecot uses the hostname as part of Maildir file names and gethostname() is not fully qualified on all operating systems (it is on IRIX but not on Linux). But unqualified hostnames are not unique and it is frequent that dovecot hosts are named "mail" oder "imap" as hostname. To distinguish between mail.domain1.com and mail.domain2.net would be easier if dovecot evaluate $HOSTNAME in all case not just deliver as program imap can create Maildir files as well. Hi, LOG_NDELAY is the only option for openlog() in dovecot 1.1.2. Wouldn't be LOG_NDELAY|LOG_PID as option parameter much more useful? Without logging the pid, it is impossible to match 'Disconnected' log entries and the corresponding session start/login. Therefore I suggest to use LOG_NDELAY|LOG_PID in the options of i_set_failure_syslog() at all 6 occurrences which passes it to openlog(). I know that it is possible to - use logging to file - patch it myself but I can't see good reasons in not using LOG_PID here. As far as I know, most other programs specify LOG_PID. [Dovecot] IMAP inbox: cannot delete tagged messages or change their tag

Hello, a bit of a problem with Dovecot. Version is 1.0.15 and is a default install (no changes to config) from FC8 repository... except that Dovecot is configured to use Maildir I have a user on the system who uses the tags in Thunderbird (Important, Personal etc). When she tags the messages they cannot be deleted and their tags cannot be changed. When deleting a message from the IMAP inbox it momentarily disappears and moves a copy to the Trash but when the IMAP inbox is reloaded the message reappears. The same happens when I try to change a tag: it comes back with the previous tag. Untagged messages can be freely deleted. Also, this problem does not happen if the messages are in a IMAP folder. They can be freely deleted. The problem seems specific to Dovecot, not Thunderbird, as I am able to tag and delete messages in another IMAP account. Also, accessing the same IMAP account using OS X Mail the messages come back after deleting them. Where should I start looking for a solution to this problem?

[Dovecot] Trying to Hide Namespace - new configuration options?

Using 1.1.2 We have: # default namespace namespace private { separator = / prefix = inbox = yes #location = maildir:/home/virtual/%h #Maildir } # for backwards compatibility: namespace private { separator = / prefix = mail/ location = maildir:%h/Maildir/ #Maildir hidden = yes list = no } The 'hidden=yes' seemed to do nothing but saw earlier in this list a reply to add 'list=no'. This has worked to hide all folder but we still have /mail/Trash showing and it refuses to go away even after unsubscribing. mail/Trash appears when I set my email client to use folder prefix "mail/". If i set the prefix to blank I only see my Inbox and Deleted folders. Interestingly it shows 'Deleted' not 'Trash'. I guess Thunderbird renames 'Trash'. What other configs are there to try? Is there a list of config changes for 1.1.x anywhere? We were not aware of the list=no config. Thanks, Daniel

Okay, after reading the wiki and list archives, I am confused. [Dovecot] Dovecot,nfs or memory indexing

Hi, I wonder if it's normal behaviour that indexes created in memory have long creation time. Other problem is that indexes created on nfs sometimes get crushed and I need to delete indexes in case of fetching mails ( I see mails on hd but when telnet on host and make stat I don't see any). Does version 1.1.x correct this errors ? And what is better to use : nfs or memory indexing ? Can someone point me adventages and disadventages of using both solutions? Best regards, Sebastian

Hello list: I am try to run quota plugin but only works a part. The users are virtual and his homedir and mbox are in NFS server, INDEX files are in local disk. Quota only is applied to global home, if I configure a low global quota and sent an mail to my e-mail, quota works fine, mail is temporally deferred. But, if I configure a high global quota and a small quota for INBOX, sent a mail that is more big that quota for INBOX, then quota is not applied and the mail is delivered to INBOX. [Dovecot] Server-side sieve for client-side copies

I know I could test this - but I'd rather ask first. To my knowledge, we haven't come up with a good server-side implementation for savings copies of sent messages (by all means correct my ignorance in this regard). So the typical way is to enable it in clients like Thunderbird (this prompted a whole discussion of how to save these messages without sending them to the server multiple times). My understanding is that sending a message from a client (use Thunderbird for simplicity of this conversation) is performed via SMTP. Saving a copy into a sent folder is performed via IMAP (hence the multiple transfers to the server). Now that I've laid a background - let's make it Dovecot specific. I don't know how "behind-the-scenes" Dovecot performs the act of saving mail messages that it receives from IMAP, instead of SMTP. Specifically, if I'm using sieve filters via deliver - can I setup a filter that will place mail copies to specific recipients into specific subfolders? -- Daniel

This may be a silly question but how to correctly stop dovecot and be sure that it's possible to start it again? kill -TERM `cat /var/run/dovecot/master.pid` doesn't work well. [Dovecot] restrict webmail access

Hi I'm using dovecot imap with ldap accounts. User management interface is phamm. Internal clients connect directly using imap client. External clients must use webmail (squirrelmail). But not everyone is supposed to use webmail. Is there any way to control who is allowed to log in from a specific IP (webmail ip)? Thanx for suggestions Jan

Hi: We're using dovecot with qmail and vpopmail and are having problems with major inaccuracies in the mail quota usage maintained in the maildirsize file. Although the file starts off accurate after we delete it and force a rebuild it quickly becomes inaccurate. It doesn't seem to be catching new mail added to the directories. Does anyone have any suggestions or links to pages that will help us troubleshoot/correct this problem. Best Regards, Jeff Koch

Greetings, I recently upgraded our server from Dovecot 1.0.14 to 1.1.1. I am building using the FreeBSD ports system, so nothing is custom aside from the flags set there. dovecot fell down a few days after the update with: pid 1823 (imap), uid 1000: exited on signal 11 the mail log shows: Jul 4 14:36:07 hostname dovecot: IMAP(username): Corrupted index cache file /home/username/mail/.imap/INBOX/dovecot.index.cache: Broken MIME parts for mail UID 10462 Jul 4 14:36:07 hostname dovecot: child 1823 (imap) killed with signal 11 unfortunately I do not have a core. The closest thing I could find in the Changelog is: v1.1.rc13 2008-06-20 Timo Sirainen <tss(a)iki.fi> - Message parser: Fixed assert-crash if cached MIME structure was broken. but, it does not appear to be the same issue. The upgrade file mentions issues with cache/index files, but they are related to downgrades. [Dovecot] Auth message

Recently my network was scanned. Various services was scanned, and checking the logs of mail server the following string draw my attention: mail dovecot: pop3-login: Disconnected: user=<ttejmgpfip>, method=PLAIN, rip=87.228.15.180, lip=x.x.x.x This looks weird to me, because pop3-login: Disconnected looks like succesful login attempt to me. I have no such user named ttejmgpfip exits ofc. I've check what dovecot writes to log if try PLAIN login method with random login/password, and it's "Aborted login". As I'm using SQL backend for user/pass database, I'm afraid that I might have something misconfigured and a possible sql-injection or something else allowed attacker to "login" with random password. Or my worries are groundless and I can get such message in some case of unsuccessful login? Running dovecot 1.0.rc15 (CentOS 5). Here is how my sql auth done: default_pass_scheme = MD5 password_query = SELECT password FROM mailbox WHERE active = '1' AND (LEFT(username, INSTR(username, '@')-1) = '%u' OR username = '%u') user_query = SELECT maildir as home, 6000 AS uid, 6000 AS gid, domain FROM mailbox WHERE LEFT(username, INSTR(username, '@')-1) = '%u' OR username = '%u' I have such query so it is possible for a user to login either as user@domain or just as user (I have single domain).

[Dovecot] NFS vs CIFS - and Dovecot

I've seen a number of posts discussing NFS based storage and issues with Dovecot. When the term "NFS" is used - does this exclusively refer to the Linux NFS network file system, or is it a generic reference to any network file system? I don't recall seeing any posts referencing issues with CIFS or SMBFS - is this because no one is using it, or because it just works instead of fiddling with NFS? -- Daniel

[Dovecot] Install from source of dovecot 1.1.2

Hi guys, I have what I'm sure is a stupid question. I'm trying to install Dovecot 1.1.2 from source and my command sequence is this: cd dovecot-1.1.2 ./configure --prefix=/usr --exec-prefix=/usr --with-mysql --with-storagesmaildir --sysconfdir=/etc/dovecot make make install cd ../dovecot-sieve-1.1.5 ./configure --with-dovecot=../dovecot-1.1.2 make make install I don't get any errors during either install I've done the odd config on dovecot to try and keep it as close to the install dirs used by the Dovecot package included with Ubuntu. Once it's done, dovecot -n still looks in /usr/local/etc and when I try and start dovecot it looks for the libexec dir in /usr/local instead of /usr. Is there something I'm missing on the configure? I've very, very little experience (rather obviously) installing directly from source so any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Guy -- Don't just do something...sit there!

Hi everybody, We use a Dovecot setup with GlusterFS. Dovecot 1.1.2 and GlusterFS 1.3.9. I enabled the following options (I don't have posix-locks translators): lock_method = dotlock dotlock_use_excl = no mmap_disable = yes mail_nfs_index = yes mail_nfs_storage = yes I receive the following error message. Aug 7 09:38:51 mta2 dovecot: POP3(somebody(a)domain.tld): nfs_flush_fcntl: fcntl(/var/vmail/domain.tld/somebody/Maildir/dovecot.index, F_RDLCK) failed: Function not implemented I think that I can disable mail_nfs_index to fix these messages. Hi, Using dovecot 1.1.2 on a dual-stack server, with the 'proxy_maybe' attribute to forward some clients to another server, it seems that only clients connecting with the same protocol version as the one used by address in the 'host' attribute in the password db are recognized as local. If an IPv4 address is specified as 'host', a dovecot proxy is created for clients connecting using IPv6 to this server, and symmetrically if the proxy is specified as an IPv6 address, clients connecting through IPv4 will get forwarded to the v6 address. Is there a way to avoid that? -- Matthieu Herrb
