Q1) I can't get ssl_verify_client_cert=yes working. The ssl key and cert are signed using our CA. Also the ssl_ca_file has a CRL appended (no revokes yet). Expected behavior: Stop the SSL (the client doesn't have a cert installed) Current behavior: Mail clients accepts SSL and login succeeds. (both Evolution and Thunderbird). My bad? Please advise. Q2) The next step, if dovecot blocks the client because of the verify_client_cert, how to create certs for OE, Evolution and Thunderbird? [Dovecot] Different passwords for different IP-Addresses/protocols?

Hi, I'd like to do the following: Have an IMAP server, avaible - at localhost 127.0.0.1 without SSL for local clients and web based applications such as squirrelmail - from outside with SSL for mobile users but - for security reasons - would like to use different passwords on both ports. Was about to try convert plugin (as opposed to mb2md.pl) and noticed, that it doesn't convert subfolders. I have following structure: ~/ | mail/ | Archive | Help | Sent | Done/ | Cardiology | Childrens | Orkin when I use convert-tool - #convert-tool username /home/username mbox:/home/username/mail/ maildir:/home/username/Maildir/ Error: Mailbox conversion: Couldn't create mailbox Done/Cardiology Error: Internal failure If I try "on the fly" conversion (by putting convert_mail = mbox:%h/mail & convert_skip_broken_mailboxes=yes in dovecot.conf) I get this in the log - Mar 6 12:23:33 enders2 dovecot: imap-login: Login: user=<username>, method=PLAIN, rip=::ffff:127.0.0.1, lip=::ffff:127.0.0.1, secured Mar 6 12:23:43 enders2 dovecot: IMAP(username): Mailbox conversion: Couldn't create mailbox Done/Cardiology Both methods convert Archive and Logs mailboxes fine. [Dovecot] Config questionsabout various login parms

I'm currently runing UW-IMAP (compiled vanilla) with procmail and mbox and am making my usual careful crawl (at turtle speed) through figuring out DC config. Some questions: a) I have something like 3-4 root imapd sessions so I presume that the default *login_processes_count* = 3 will be OK. I'm less clear about login_max_processes_count and login_max_connections = 256. A common enough heavy load has something like 275 unique users accessing imap and 600 imapd processes. Suggestions? I'm beginning with no SSL, KISS. b) If I set login_process_per_connection =no, would the number of users accessing imap be the same as the number of imapd sessions? c) login_process_size is confusing/intriguing. If there are 500 processes, the default of 32MB means 16GB (the box has 12GB). OTOH, what about the big players with a 400 MB inbox...will they be able to open their inbox with the default d) login_max_connections ditto...I shouldn't think that an individual user would conceivably have the default of 256, except pathologically....or is this applied to the listening imapd root processes. [Dovecot] Newbie questions: Load-balanced Dovecot with NFS storage

Hi, I experimented with Dovecot a while back and our site is now taking the plunge to switch to it from the UW IMAP server when we rejig the topology of our mail store and IMAP servers. Currently we have a farm of 5 IMAP servers running the UW server. Each has locally attached disk used to store people's mailboxes. Each user is allocated to one of these five servers and can only access their mail via that server. Our aim is to remove this restriction to provide resilience in the event of a server failing. Our thoughts... * We are envisaging having a farm of N (to be determined) servers running Dovecot. These will be closed systems: users do not have shell- access, and can only reach their mail via IMAP. * A single mailstore common to all N servers will be hosted on our NetApp filer and NFS-mounted on each server. Each server would be running Solaris 10. If we use all-new kit it will be x86-based, or we may have to redeploy some of our existing SPARC boxes to the new service. * We will be converting user mailboxes to be in Maildir format. * Our hardware load balancer, which supports persistent sessions, will be used to distribute users between the servers. This could either direct a user to any one of the N servers, or could be set to 'prefer' a given server for a particular user (only failing over to one of the others if their 'usual' server was unavailable). More on this in my questions below. :-) I have been scouring the Dovecot list, archives and Wiki and think I have come up with a set of issues we need to be aware of and things we have to do in order to make this work reliably. Please would you let me know if I have missed or misunderstood anything? Issues To Watch For ------------------- * For timestamp integrity our servers will be synched with NTP to our local time server. * Because sessions could be on different servers memory mapping of index files doesn't work well with NFS, so set mmap_disable=yes in dovecot.conf. * Dovecot relies on the mtime timestamp of mailbox files so the NFS-mounted mailstore needs to be mounted with these options on each server: actimeo=0 (Are there any other mount options we should use too?) * We will be using filesystem quotas on users mailboxes. We understand that Dovecot's index files are best on no-quota filestores so will store these separately. Questions --------- Q1. Would it be better to store the index files on NFS-shared filestore and direct users to any of the IMAP server machines? Or to store the index files on local disk and direct each user to their 'preferred' IMAP server machine? Q2. Does Dovecot (or "something") clean out old index files that haven't been accessed for a while? Eg, when a user has temporarily come through on a different IMAP server to normal. Or do the index files sit there untouched for evermore? Q3. Storing the index files on the NetApp filer would give us the ability to share them between servers and grow their volume as need be, but at the cost of performance. How big do the index files get? Are they typically a few kBytes per message? Per mailbox? Per user? Or more? Q4. We will be using Exim as the MTA, which can deliver direct to Maildir mailboxes. However I understand that Dovecot's "deliver" LDA adds the benefit of updating the index files as each message is delivered. Is this a significant gain? Or is there little difference in actual use? Q5. We have around 20,000 mail accounts and will therefore be seeing lots of concurrent IMAP sessions, usually secure (SSL) ones. I have seen mention that this can give rise to "Too many open files" errors under Solaris. How do we avoid this when we are likely to have several thousand concurrent IMAP sessions per server machine? With many thanks for your time and advice... [Dovecot] Time moving backwards error

I'm running dovecot on an OpenBSD 3.7 server and after upgrading to RC25, the daemon started exiting with: Fatal: Time just moved backwards (1173221579 -> 1173221578)! This might cause a lot of problems, so I'll just kill myself now. After upgrading to RC26, I've gotten the error: Error: Time just moved backwards by 1 seconds. I'll sleep now until we're back in present. Occasionally, however, it's followed by: Fatal: Sleep interrupted, byebye. The server is running NTP, but I can't find any reason why it would have to roll the clock back a second so often. Until I get this figured out, I've gone back to RC19. Any ideas? Hello, I have a configuration with dovecot-ldap working with openldap (on FreebSD 5.4 Release). Now I'm trying to do the same thing with an Active Directory (win2k3). I have installed an properly configured SFU. Via nss_ldap-pam_ldap is working fine (FreeBSD 6.2 Release). Because nss_ldap is reported broken with dovecot I'm trying to use dovecot-ldap for both passdb and userdb. My guessed filters/attributes follows: user_filter = (&(objectClass=user)(msSFU30Name=%u)) user_attrs = homeDirectory=msSFU30HomeDirectory, uidNumber=msSFU30UidNumber, gidNumber=msSFU30GidNumber pass_attrs = msSFU30Name,msSFU30Password pass_filter = (&(objectClass=user)(msSFU30Name=%u)) But it doesn't work. I have seen no problem with the ldap server. I'm using similar setups in several other servers with no trouble at all. [Dovecot] Question about auth-master, deliver, and SQL maps

I have been running Postfix/Dovecot with a Postgresql backend for several months, and everything has been running great. Now I want to add server side filtering, so I'm attempting to configure deliver. The SQL maps for Postfix are all keyed upon the recipient email address. The SQL map (user_query) for Dovecot is keyed upon the IMAP login name, which is potentially unrelated to the email address. But when I configure deliver to use auth-master, it doesn't work right, because it is passing the recipient email address as a key to user_query, which is wrong. Somehow, I need auth-master to use a different SQL query from user_query when doing lookups for deliver. In essence, I want deliver to use the same SQL queries where were previously used for the Postfix "virtual" delivery agent. Is there any way to do this? Richard Coleman rcoleman(a)criticalmagic.com

Binary package builders could use this to create some dovecot-dev package to make compiling plugins easier. - PLAIN authentication: Don't crash dovecot-auth with invalid input. - IMAP APPEND: Don't crash if saving fails - IMAP LIST: If prefix.INBOX has children and we're listing under prefix.%, don't drop the prefix. - mbox: Broken X-UID headers still weren't handled correctly. - mail-log plugin: Fixed deleted/undeleted logging.

Using maildir++ with LDA and POP/IMAP we have been seeing intermittant maildirsize corruption. Where an operation will be prepended by a handful of ASCI null characters ^@^@. This needs to be explicitly set in plugins, so out-of-tree plugins won't have this check by default. - pop3_lock_session=yes could cause deadlocks, and with maildir the uidlist lock could have been overridden after 2 minutes causing problems - PAM wasted CPU by calling a timeout function 1000x too often - Trash plugin was more or less broken with multiple namespaces and with multiple trash mailboxes

Hello, Trying to set in dovecot.conf more than one auth section found that imap and pop3 auth process use bose of them. Loooks like thay do in round-robin way or maybe another way. Quetion - Is exist any way to limit default doecot auth process to use just "auth default" for authintification ? maybe some options like "services= POP3 IMAP" inside? Or maybe there is anather way to do this ?

[Dovecot] quota warning

Hi, As suggested by Timo, I have tried to implement some warning when the user gets close to his quota limit. The patch is attached. It is configured in the plugin section of the configuration file: quota_warning = 80:0:/usr/local/bin/quota_warning.sh With this one, /usr/local/bin/quota_warning.sh is executed each time a mail brings the total size from below 80% to 80% or above. The second number serves as a limit for the count. The /usr/local/bin/quota_warning.sh script builds the warning message and delivers it with cat << EOF | /usr/lib/dovecot/deliver -c /etc/dovecot-nowarning.conf where /etc/dovecot-nowarning.conf is the same as my normal configuration file, except that it lacks the quota warning option (that is required in a situation where the warning message is large enough to bring over the 80% limit, to avoid a warning loop). Hola! Dovecot should serve virtual mail users. So I've set user_global_uid and user_global_gid in dovecot_ldap.conf to vmail/vmail. Also I've commented auth the user_attrs field. Still Dovecot tries to switch to the uid that is defined in the LDAP entry. It took me some time to figure out, that the only way to prevent this is to set user_attrs = foo=uid,bar=gid or something like this, so Dovecot doesn't have a chance to find the uid/gid. Still it will perform some LDAP lookups. In my oppinion, Dovecot shouldn't try to get the uid/gid from LDAP if the user_attrs field is undefined. I'm using Dovecot 1.0rc24 on Debian sid. Regards, A.

Can you tell me something on how I can find the solution for this problem? I don't think its a firewall issue, I disabled my Desktop Firewall. On the server I use shorewall, but of course, port 110 is open and it works disabling AntiVir on the client side. The error also occurs when I disable the Server Firewall as well. The error is reproducible on several PCs (I tried 3 PCs). Have you got any hint? Without solving the problem, I have to switch the pop3 server to another one, because this problem is really a crucial one.The only problem is: I loke dovecot. :) Thanks in advance! [Dovecot] 1.0rc25: double INBOX folder (weird)

Let me start off by saying the initial cause was *not* a Dovecot bug. :) If you have the default namespace "INBOX." (Courier emulation mode from the Wiki) and an actual folder in your ~/Maildir/ with INBOX in the name (~/Maildir/.INBOX.Miami), then Dovecot presents them both to the client as the real Inbox in Thunderbird: Account Inbox (3) Drafts Sent INBOX (3) ...where (3) is me representing a new email account; if you click on either INBOX folder (parent or child) they show the same contents of the single Inbox. It was really confusing until I figured out the Maildir was messed up on the backend. Sometime back in 2004 the Courier-IMAP server let one of my (dovecot) testers create a folder called .INBOX.Miami; until the 1.0rc25 upgrade we never even knew it was there - it has been invisible this whole time. I can only assume that a bug in Courier allowed that folder to be created in the first place, I'm not bothering to track it down. Once I upgraded to 1.0rc25 this morning all the sudden there it was -- obviously not Dovecot's fault for putting it there and it was easy enough to fix by hand, but I thought I'd report it in case it exposed some logic gap in the code. I updated to the latest rc25 and started getting these messages(over and over again). This is on a Solaris 10 box and I tried compiling with gcc and sun c. I backed down to rc23 and the messages went away and everything works. I upgraded (NetBSD 2.99 i386) from 1.0rc7 to 1.0rc24 and then tried rc25, and in both cases need to restart Dovecot every day or so (low volume server). It seems to run out of file descriptors. I have now raised the file descriptor limit to 1024, but that is not a long-term solution... ... [Dovecot] Migration

Hi, I have a Mailserver setup with Qmail+Vpopmail+courier-imap with 2000 users.The authentication in vpopmail was in plaint text file based.Right now the issue is while opening a user email box with 50-100 mails it is opening fastly.Butfor email-boxes with attachments and increased number of mails it take long time to open the Imap connection. So I would like to change the Imaps to Dovecot.Please suggest if I can migrate from courier-imap to dovecot with vpopmail and qmail without changing the present username and passwords. [Dovecot] new crashes: is the index/mail cache endian neutral?

Part of our migration plan takes our users from one endianness to another (big to little). Will the index and mail cache files survive? I'm seeing some new core dumps as the first test user is migrated, which makes me think... not. What about if we want to build dovecot 64 bit in the future? Will that cause problems too? We're running Dovecot rc15 on Solaris 9, providing IMAP access to e-mail stored in Maildir++. I've noticed that a significant number of message files are currently sitting in the directories ~/Maildir/.Trash/new/. I would have expected that all messages in .Trash would be in the /cur subdirectory (as most are), and I'm not sure how they're landing in /new. If I connect to Dovecot and run something like the following, the messages all *do* immediately end up in .Trash/cur/ : x select blah * FLAGS (\Answered \Flagged \Deleted \Seen \Draft) * OK [PERMANENTFLAGS (\Answered \Flagged \Deleted \Seen \Draft \*)] Flags * permitted. * 4 EXISTS * 0 RECENT * OK [UIDVALIDITY 1150071896] UIDs valid * OK [UIDNEXT 5] Predicted next UID x OK [READ-WRITE] Select completed. x copy 4 "Trash" x OK Copy completed. Most of our users are using Thunderbird, and after looking at various outputs of rawlog, TB seems to be simply issuing uid copy commands to "Trash" like the ones above when a user deletes a message. Do any of you know what IMAP interaction with Dovecot can lead to message files appearing in .Trash/new/ ? Hi there, I'm using postgres as a userdb for dovecot. I'm am trying to get the quota plugin to work. I have a column in my table that returns the quota in KB. I am using the postgres expression "('maildir:storage=' || mailstore_control.mailbox.quota) AS quota" as recommended in the manuals. This expression is NULL to start with, which I take to mean unlimited quota. Trouble is, if I change it to a value, and then change it back to null, I don't seem to go back to unlimited quota. I'm using maildir++ quotas. Hi, I wonder if it posible to replace qmail + vpopmail with sendmail + dovecot? The idea is like this: - use sendmail + milter API to filter spam/virus and deliver the email to the dovevot MDA (LDA) - dovecot should save the email to the directory as specified in the vpopmail DB - maintain the vpopmail BD (users + passwd) - use dovecot pop3/imap for the clients - use sendmail again to receive the email from the pop3/imap users and deliver the email to the internet as usual. [Dovecot] MBOX to MAILDIR conversion

Thinking about going from mbox to maildir. Started with mbox way back when but thinking about making the conversion. The main reason is that I use rsync for backups and when these huge mailboxes are touched I have to copy the whole thing. With maildir I only copy the files that change. So - my questions is - what's the easiest way to make this happan. I assume there are conversion utilities. I'm using Exim as an MTA. Also - using Ext3 for the file system on a Raid 10 array. Backup server will run Ext3 Raid 1. Is the number of files in one directory going to be a problem? And - any tip/tricks would be appreciated. Things to look out for? Still in planning stage. Hello folks -- I'm using Debian etch and I've got Mysql 5.0, Dovecot 1.0rc15 and DSpam 3.6.8... I've downloaded the mysql-dspam-plugin code, and it builds without errors. Hi, i have installed the dovecot 1.0rc25 and everything is working well. I have connected it to a postgresql database. Now to my little problem: Postfix is delivering into a maildir folder with active maildirquota patches, and this is working well. The problem is only that dovecot is not recognizing the maildirquota file at all. I have configured it as in the documentation with Plugin { Quota=maildir } Anyone any idea ? maybe this is a bug ? However, if instead of using auth_bind_userdn = uid=%u, ou=People, dc=example, dc=com I bind with dn = cn=Directory Manager dnpass = password than it correctly looks in /var/spool/UName regardless of the case used when logging in. It seems like when I log in with auth_bind_userdn %u is being left as the value I logged in with rather than being reloaded from LDAP. I was wondering if I have made some mistake in the configuration files to cause this behaviour or if something else is going on? thanks, Aaron

Hi I try to migrate from courier to Dovecot. Is there a way to get the same behaviour of Courier-imap with dovecot, about expunged emails ? I though about using the Lazy-Expunge plugin. The problem with this plugin is the following: messages are moved and set to be deleted in the Trash Folder. I would like they weren't set to be deleted. Hi List, I just updated an old sendmail installation to a modern postfix/dovecot system with mysql backend. Everything works fine but SMTP-AUTH fails with some clients. The problem is, that with PLAIN (old) clients send the base64 coded form: USERNAME\0USERNAME\0PASSWORD which, as i understand dovecot interprets as MASTERUSER\0USERNAME\PASSWORD. New clients send \0USERNAME\0PASSWORD which works fine. I don`t like to use masterusers, because then everyone would be able to log in as someone else. When i don`t have a passdb with master=yes in my dovecot.conf, Dovecot complains auth(default): passdb(XXXX(a)YYY.TLD,master): Attempted master login with no master passdbs If i create a passdb with contains everyone, everyone may look into other mailboxes. No good idea. I can`t change the old clients, but for now, i don`t know, what i am doing wrong or how to correct it. No real HowTo for my setup on the net, it seems that everyone uses cyrus-sasl. May anybody help, because i don`t like to switch my setup or use 2 auth daemons. Hi there, I'm building a mail system for an ISP. We want to be able to turn on or off IMAP or POP3 access for certain customers- basically we want to be able to offer a customer POP3 access, unless they pay us some more money, in which case they get IMAP The username and password will remain the same, and are driven out of a postgres database. The best way I've though of doing this so far is by defining separate auth systems for IMAP and POP. Is this the best way? A gold star is available if you can think of a way that if they try and use IMAP but haven't paid for it it rejects them with "Give us all your money..." or some such. Server : Solaris 9 /SPARC, Dovecot 1.0.rc22 Client : Mac OS X 10.4.8 (8L2127) Kernel-Version: Darwin 8.8.1 Thunderbird is: german Version 1.5.0.9 (20061207) With OS X Mail.app, message deletion works. With Thunderbird, a warning popup appear on the desktop. English translation is about "command failed, internal error occurred". Hi All, I've read a bit about this but don't really see a full solution anywhere. Has anyone actually got a good fix for this? Telling a user they are over quota then not allowing them to delete anything does seem the height of perversion. =) Question is - is this even a problem for the IMAP server? Or should the MUA be detecting over quota problems and then issuing the right commands to delete messages WITHOUT the copy to Trash? Lastly - even if it is the MUA's responsibility - will Dovecot not still have a problem with indexes? I suspect perhaps not if: A. When using FS Quotas you store the indexes in a non quota partition B. When using other quotas (dirsize / maildir++), Dovecot does not count the index files when counting up the usage. Is B true? I am still having issues with new message count. When I move a message to another folder, it counts that message as new until you go into that folder. Is there a way I can solve this? Could it have something to do with NFS? I have tried all the NF workarounds with no luck... I have also tried NFSv3 and NFSv4, no difference. I store the indexes on the local drive...

Hi, @all! Is it possible, with Dovecot, to do something (eg: an SQL-Query) when the User logs out (POP3) or do some action (IMAP)? My problem is to notify a DB when the user logs out or delete E-Mail (in this case, just for IMAP). Thanks for your answer! I use the MailDir mailbox format. The reason for doing this is that I have some special exim filters which deliver mail to specified directories. I don't want users to be able to change these folders because it will mess up the filtering. [Dovecot] Force "lower case" Folder Creation?

We're exploring the use of "plus addressing" in our MTA (Exim), which delivers "user+topic(a)domain.com" to a user's "topic" folder. However, the case-sensitive nature of our ext3 filesystem means that a message destined to "topic" won't deliver to a user's "Topic" folder. For example, if a user creates a "Topic" folder, and gives "user+Topic(a)domain.com" to a web form that lower-cases it, delivery is deferred. Although we're checking to see if Exim can workaround this, is there a way Dovecot (1.0rc24) can force lowercase folder names without a patch? We'd hate to do this but are exploring our options. [Dovecot] 1.0rc_15 - imap-login disappearing

Hi All I am trying to troubleshoot a problem that's been bugging me for several months. About once or twice per week my IMAP server seems to get in a state where no connections are possible (Thunderbird hangs at "Connected to <server>"). Restarting dovecot completely fixes the problem, until it occurs again, hours or days later. I caught the problem today after I rebooted my server, and monitored the running processes while attempting to connect. After each connection attempt, the number of imap-idle processes running decremented until none at all were running. Before the final imap-login process died, I attached an instance of strace to it - results here: http://www.pasteserver.net/286 I am running Dovecot 1.0_rc15 on a Gentoo server. It's a vmware virtual server - mentioning this now just in case, but I'm confident that's not anything to do with it, no other services are having any problems that I am aware of. I am using TLS and Maildir. I don't know enough about how dovecot is supposed to work, so I would appreciate some help in diagnosing this problem! Cheers, James

Is there a way to have messages marked to be deleted move to the trash folder automatically? I have moved from courier-imap (which dovecot performs muck better) but the one feature I really need is move to trash. Is there any plugins available for this?

Hello, I'm sorry if I'm asking something that is documented - I could swear I saw something about this (dovecot changing to the uid of the entry in the userdb when accessing the mailbox), but now I cannot find it anywhere in the wiki! Dovecot seems to be getting the right uid for the mailbox, but then it is having permissions problems. In case anyone still cares, relay-ctrl works with Dovecot. Hello, I migrate from cucipop to dovecot. Thus I move users' mailboxes (mbox format) to another location. Some POP3 client (for example Outlook or TheBat!) use flag 'Do not delete messages from server'. After the user's mailbox have been moved to a new location all old messages is retrieved again and user get duplicates. Is there a way to avoid such issue? I've trying to get dovecot-auth to talk to exim and have been running debugging on both sides. I've added the line: i_info("auth_client_input: client disconnected: %s", strerror(errno)); just after the "case -1" in the first switch statement in: auth-client-connection.c: auth_client_input() and get this in the logs: dovecot: Feb 27 13:35:09 Info: auth(default): auth_client_input: client disconnected: Illegal seek Now, on the exim end if I don't have the i_info() call in the routine the call to fgets() which exim is using never returns. If I put the i_info() call in there it does and gives an error, e.g. 2007-02-27 13:35:09 dovecot_plain authenticator failed for vanguard.earth.ox.ac.uk [163.1.22.82]: 435 Unable to authenticate at present: authentication socket protocol error Now, the istreams code in dovecot seems rather too obscure for me to debug any further. According to the read(2) man page under Solaris 10, the only version of read which can possibly return ESPIPE is pread(). Any ideas what's going on? [Dovecot] Capability dropping support patch

Hi, A week ago I submitted an early patch, please ignore it. The patch attached to this email has been tested and seems to work for me. I have also attached instead of inline to solve problems with spaces/tabs. The patch will, on systems that have libcap support, drop capabilities that Dovecot doesn't need. For example there is no need for CAP_SYS_MODULE, which enables module loading or CAP_SYS_PTRACE/CAP_SYS_ADMIN/etc. If libcap isn't installed then nothing will change, this is a compile-time only enhancement that isn't configurable. Personally I did not find that CAP_SYS_CHROOT was needed in order for me to authenticate and access my mailbox, but I haven't configured anything special with chrooting (yet). I added it because I see chroot() is used in src/lib/restrict-access.c. The patch was generated against 1.0-rc24 and tested with clients imp and Thunderbird. My configuration uses a virtual passdb, requires TLS for AUTH and exports auth-master under a different account. All of this appears to work correctly. I'd appreciate any comments, perhaps this will help safeguard the 1000EUR on non-hardened systems :) David

[Dovecot] Dovecot rc23 and rc24 freeze after authentication

I had our production systems running on rc23, however we ran into problems when the server was under heavy load. Eventually, the server would begin to freeze all imap connection after authentication (according to the logs). A user would connect, authentication would succeed, and then the connection would sit until timing out. No error logs were produced. Upgrading to rc24 did not resolve the issue, but reverting to rc22 has. -Garret -- Garret W. I'm running 1.0rc23 on FreeBSD 6.2-RELEASE, and seeing the following: Starting dovecot. Error: Can't use SSL key file /etc/ssl/private/dovecot.pem: No such file or directory In the config file I have: ssl_cert_file=/usr/local/certs/imapd.pem Looking for dovecot.pem on the config file there's only: % grep dovecot.pem dovecot.conf #ssl_cert_file = /etc/ssl/certs/dovecot.pem #ssl_key_file = /etc/ssl/private/dovecot.pem So the two entries referencing dovecot.pem are commented out. I removed those two lines anyway, just in case, but it didn't make a difference. What am I missing? Please ignore my previous question.. as it turns out it's a bug/feature of fprintf(3C) and sockets under Solaris. Exim was using fprintf to output the AUTH string and for some unknown reason it was hanging, possibly because the input buffer on the file stream wasn't empty or something. After modifying the Exim's dovecot authentication plug-in to use write(2) instead of fprintf(3C) it miraculously worked! Hi, I'm running RC19 on a Solaris 10 SPARC box. It seems that whenever I open an e-mail in any folder via IMAP, dovecot appears to scan every other folder in the Maildir. A truss reveals that it is lstat-ing every e-mail in every directory. I'm sorry I am sending only a fragment of the truss, it's really too long... but is this behaviour expected? Hi folks. Is there a way to modify the log stamp to include pid as well as time? Preferably for all logging, but at least for imap and pop. I took a look at the mail-login plugin, but that seems to associate operations with uid, still no pid. Am I missing something? Thanks for any info, -Brian U of Minnesota Internet Services

[Dovecot] Bigcrypt password patch

Hi, we are currently in the progress of switching an HPUX mailserver to linux and dovecot. The only issue so far is, that HPUX has bigcrypt for passwords > 8 chars. Bigcrypt uses standard libc crypt for every block of 8 chars. The linux pam modules have a bigcrypt.c file which can be used for dovecot as well to authenticate crypt and bigcrypt passwords. I have used the pam bigcrypt.c code to patch the mycrypt.c dovecot file. Hi all, I'm using dovecot 1.0 RC24 compiled form source on a OpenBSD 4.0, I use IMAP service with maildir storage and my mail client is Outlook 2003. If the root of the user maildir stay on the BSD filesystem everything is right. [Dovecot] openssl mkcert problem

Hello, Can someone point me to what I should do to install the missing files? [Dovecot] Dovecot on Solaris x86?

I'm trying to get dovecot working on Solaris x86. I've got it working just fine on RH Desktop 4; and while I have a built, limping version on solx86, it's not actually usable except from other solx86 systems. Basic details: Version 1.0rc23 OS Solaris x86 (64 bit) CPU Opteron Filesystem NFS (but it's not getting that far) The general problem is apparently SSL-related. I can connect properly from another Solaris x86 machine, using either mutt or straight openssl; but when I try mutt from a Solaris or Linux machine, I get the error "SSL failed: I/O error" and it fails, and when I use openssl from a Linux machine, I get something like this: victor ~> stelnet xxxxxxxx.ks.uiuc.edu 993 + openssl s_client -connect xxxxxxxx.ks.uiuc.edu:993 -verify -debug verify depth is 0 CONNECTED(00000003) depth=0 /C=US/ST=Illinois/L=Urbana/O=UIUC/OU=[...] verify error:num=18:self signed certificate verify return:1 depth=0 /C=US/ST=Illinois/L=Urbana/O=UIUC/OU=[...] verify return:1 24748:error:140790E5:SSL routines:SSL23_WRITE:ssl handshake failure:s23_lib.c:226: Annoyingly, the same command run from a Solaris machine connects, even though mutt doesn't. (I'm using 'mutt -f imaps://xxxx/', which I know works elsewhere; and the Linux mutt is the system default one, so I don't suspect that it is the source of the problem.) The logs have been remarkably un-useful: dovecot: Feb 21 09:41:21 Info: imap-login: Disconnected: rip=[...], lip=[...] TLS handshake The software was built in all cases with: ./configure --prefix=/usr/local/encap/dovecot-1.0rc23.1 I've tried with both Sun's native cc and gcc compilers. I have also tried building on SPARC Solaris with the native cc compiler, to the same (negative) effect. (I used to have v0.99.14 running just fine on this SPARC machine, so this worries me... but I only checked it just now as an after-thought.) I am sure this is a really stupid question but I could do with some advice. I am setting an old PC as an email/file server using Gentoo Linux. So far I have configured getting emails from a couple of a pop3 accounts I have with ISPs/Mail Service providers using getmail and dovecot. I can access those emails from a variety of clients using IMAP without problem. The next stage I want to implement is to have a central location available to the clients of sent emails as well as received emails. It is this part I am a bit confused about. I know I will need some kind of agent to transfer the email from the client to the appropriate ISP/Mail provider but I am overwhelmed by the choice. Sendmail seems a bit OTT for me needs! [Dovecot] Simple patch

Inline below is a simple patch that drops the root capabilities that aren't needed (inspired by a similar patch against the mpm_itk project!). Possibly it is a little too restrictive, extras can be added to suidcaps, but on platforms that support capabilities this will prevent things such as kernel module loading. Needed on linux is libcap, available in most distros. Note that this patch doesn't require libcap, or add an option, but if it is installed then it will take advantage of it. I don't have any other platforms to test on. The patch compiles fine but I haven't managed to test it yet. My autoconf experience is zero, so I hope that HAVE_LIBCAP is actually getting defined. Comments appreciated, I'll test it thoroughly later when I get some free time (and, if it works, remove the test message!).
