I have several mail accounts, but collect all spam e-mail in the spam mailbox on one of them. After switching to dovecot (from imap-uw) I notice a very slow speed of bulk transfers and a very high CPU utilization by the dovecot's imap process during it -- sustained 62% of my server's Pentium2 @266MHz. Never saw such effects under imap-uw... My client is KMail (despite the awfull quality of its latest release). Hope, this helps. Yours, -mi

I'm getting this error on a particular message in my Maildir: Oct 11 21:59:48 aurora dovecot: IMAP(doug): file ostream-file.c: line 646 (_send_istream): assertion failed: (instream->v_offset <= in_size) To me, more import than the question "why is this happening" is "how can I debug this?" Attaching gdb to the running imap process doesn't give me access to the proper function names to set up breakpoints and get a stack trace. Can someone with the experience give a quick how-to on debugging functions deep in dovecot? Thanks, Doug

[Dovecot] what exactly does outlook-idle workaround?

Hi, Can anyone tell me what the 'client_workarounds = outlook-idle' directive exactly does? I have enabled it in my /etc/dovecot.conf, but the problem that I think it should solve still exsits. That is that after being IDLE for more than half an hour Dovecot will disconnect Outlook but Outlook never connects back. Therefore users receive new mail, but they don't get notified unless they press send/receive. So what does the workaround do? And how can I solve the problem? Thanks! Jonathan

I've been browsing the wiki and thru my mail-list archives but haven't found an answer. does/can dovecot 0.99.x support authenticating with a SASL database? I'll be setting up a new mail server for my offices using Sendmail/MIMEDefang/ClamAV/etc with dovecot as the IMAP server. I'm not familiar at all with LDAP. I know that sendmail will authenticate to a SASL database and it's fairly easy to setup. My goal is that I can support "real" users (actual user accounts) but allow their mail passwords to be different than their login passwords, and changeable via some sort of CGI interface. (I also have 2 weeks to accomplish this) any assistance is appreciated alan

[Dovecot] Does dovecot support subfolders in Outlook (and in general)

Ok, I am playing around with dovecot and things are running relatively smoothly. I am using Outlook as that is what the client uses for Email. I can copy messages to and from the IMAP folder. I can create folders from the root directory fine. My question is this. I have folders like this: IMAPServer --Inbox --Trash --WorkToDo Now when I try and create a subfolder in "WordToDo" I get an error message "Unable to create the folder. The server responded: 'Mailbox doesn't allow inferior mailboxes' When I try to create a subfolder in "Inbox" I get an error message "Unable to create the folder. The folder 'Inbox' cannot contains subfolders..." So is this a limitation of Dovecot? Another problem with Outlook? Or do I have some configuration problem on my end? Thanks. --- Charles PS: My first impressions of dovecot are very positive. It is a much cleaner and, so far, easier to handle IMAP server than the heavyweight UW & Cyrus IMAP servers. Thanks for answer, The config I have is very small (for now) All of my user have an account on the machine. Very soon I plan to switch to LDAP. For my needs, a PowerUser for all domains is enough. Not yet. But I guess I should one day add support for it. Most SASL mechanisms support it directly without a kludgy username. I'm not sure about the configuration though. For passwd-file I guess there could be just one global flag which means that the user has access to everyone's mails. For LDAP and SQL I guess the pass_filter/password_query could have a few new %vars to describe the other user. Or maybe there needs to be a separate filter/query for that case. Hmm. Do you want the poweruser to have access to all mailboxes, or just for the one domain? What passdb are you using?

[Dovecot] Detecting unused accounts

I'm looking for a way to figure out which accounts have not been logged in to in over n days. It occurs to me that, perhaps, the way to do this would be to look at the mtime on one of the dovecot-maintained files, like 'dovecot-uidlist'. I just recently discovered dovecot. I am evaluating the program and several clients uses Outlook/Outlook Express. In the clients issues section of dovecot.org is says "You should enable outlook-idle workaround" Ok, maybe I am missing something very obvious here but I can not find any documentation on how to implement the outlook-idle workaround. Can anyone point me to an article or something with more details on this issue? Thanks in advance.

At least more stable than test46 which crashed quite often when expunging. - pretty much rewrote "index extension" support. it's now possible to add extensions to headers and to message records. it's possible to resize them. I'll probably use it soon to change mbox code to use 32bit offsets and automatically grow to 64bit offsets once mbox grows over 4GB (well, yes, rare, but.. :) - login_greeting and login_greeting_capability settings - auth_verbose is even more verbose - mbox fixes/optimizations - other fixes/additions

I get this error with some messages in my inbox: The current command did not succeed. The mailserver responded: Error in IMAP command UID: Invalid BODY[..] parameter: Missing '>' in <102400.-100124> The <102400.-100124> at the end depends on the message. [Dovecot] dovecot and (no) new incomming mail - migration from wu-imapd

Hi, I recently installed dovecot 0.99 on a fedora core 1 Server which used the wu-imap-server. dovecot starts and I can subscribe to my old imapfolders, but if I send mails to my account, this new mail arent downloaded. If I quit Mozilla and restart Mozilla, the recently send mails are in my inbox. We use also a webmailsystem, so I could verify that the mails are in the inbox without relogging in. This phenome is not showing up by all my imap accounts. I'm testing with mozilla 1.7.3 and 1.8a4 on a mac os x 10.3.5 Client. The Inbox-folder for the "defect" account is showing in italic and grey ghosted (in the folder list), the folder in the working account is normal. A user using Netscape 7.1 on a Windows XP Client has also no Problems.... I upgraded my server from Mandrake 9.2 (Imapd , postfix & SQ mail) to Fedora core 2 (dovecot, postfix & SQ mail) i backed up /etc/passwd , /etc/shadow files & all home directories of users account on my server .. after resotration & configuration of the servers everything seems to work , except users email they had on the server saved :( man this is embaracing .. can u tell me wat i did wrong ? where were the mails stored .. & wat is the right way to do it ? thanks

I'm using SpamAssassin to tag spam and prefix the spam score to the subject line. To make the scores sort properly in the client's message list, I pad the score with spaces to right-align it. It looks like dovecot-0.99.10.9-1.FC3.2 is frustrating this by stripping the excess spaces from the subject before reporting it in FETCH responses. Hi, It seems that on larger folders (32k emails) searching fails with the following error under squirrelmail 1.4.3a. (The server continues to work, as the hard drive stays on for a bit after the error is displayed) --- Search Results ERROR: ERROR : Connection dropped by imap-server. Query: SEARCH CHARSET ISO-8859-1 ALL SUBJECT {9} 5.3-BETA7 SUBJECT {9} available --- Oddly enough, when searching for just '5.3-BETA7' instead of '5.3-BETA7 available' the search completes OK. I can search with multiple strings on smaller (3k) folders however. Thanks.

Hi, I'm a new list member, I’m a not an English native speaking (so, please forgive any error you can find in this mail) and I'm trying to install Dovecot in Debian Woody. I've installed the Dovecot package from backports and I’m trying to configure it to get the credential authentication from an LDAP backend. This is the configuration process summary I’ve done; if you need some configuration file I can post it with great pleasure. In LDAP I’ve created the user cn=dovecot,ou=DSA,dc=flanet,dc=org, I’ve configured this user to have read access to the userPassword field in slapd.conf (the other parameter such as uid, directoryHome… can be read as anonymous), I’ve configured the dovecot-ldap.conf to bind using the “cn=dovecot,ou=DSA,dc=flanet,dc=org” and I set the *auth_userdb* and *auth_passdb* of dovecot.conf to *ldap /path/to/dovecot-ldap.conf*. [Dovecot] timeout when retrieving folder list w/ Evolution 2.0?

hi, i have a problem with some maildir folders, where Evolution times out when retrieving the header list. It only happens with one particular folder, but i can't seem to find a pattern behind it. The amount of headers it does manage to retrieve varies, from between 3% to 50%. Its not a particularly large folder either (only 520 messages). The error message I get from Evolution is "Server response ended too soon". I did an Ethereal trace, and the closest IMAP command before the failure is: FLAGS (\Answered \Seen) RFC822.SIZE xxx INTERNALDATE "xxx" UID nnn)\r\n its a different UID value that fails each time though. after this response from the server, it seems to get through the message header (not sure if the entire message header was sent back). i'll keep this folder around as a test case. any ideas on where to start debugging? i'm fairly familiar with C and gdb. leon

Hello, I am new to the list and after searching the net for a solution to this problem, I have yet to find it. Maybe someone here can help. I had been using Dovecot that came with FC2 for about 1200 POP3 and IMAP mail accounts. At random times (1-5 days) an imap process would run the cpu usage up to 99% on one of my cpus (Running SMP P3-866) and hang. That process was unkillable and only a reboot would fix the problem. If I let it go, eventually it would lock up the server completely. [Dovecot] Dovecot/IMP Bug with RFC822.SIZE and BODYSTRUCTURE

Ok, I have narrowed my IMP/Dovecot attachment problem down to what I think is a bug in Dovecot. The test that follow are performed on 0.99.11. When you download an attachment in IMP it uses the php function imap_fetchbody() which contacts the IMAP server and retrieves just the mime chunk you are looking for. It does this by first fetching some information about the email, and then grabs the specific chunk you are looking for in a second request. The first request looks like this. "FETCH 258 (ENVELOPE BODY.PEEK[HEADER.FIELDS (Path Message-ID Newsgroups Followup-To References)] BODYSTRUCTURE INTERNALDATE RFC822.SIZE FLAGS)" Dovecot responds properly on all parts of this request except for the BODYSTRUCTURE portion which gets returned as this. "BODYSTRUCTURE ("text" "plain" NIL NIL NIL "7bit" 0 0 NIL NIL NIL)" This causes the imap_fetchbody() funtion to freak out and not do the 2nd request, and it returns 0 bytes. If I manually try "FETCH 258 (BODYSTRUCTURE)" Dovecot returns the expected data properly. I figured there must be an interaction between the BODYSTRUCTURE fetch and one of the other items that are requested, so I tried them all and narrowed it down to this. FETCH 258 (BODYSTRUCTURE) <- works OK FETCH 258 (BODYSTRUCTURE RFC822.SIZE) <- BODYSTRUCTURE reply is wrong. I have been surfing through the dovecot source looking for a way to fix or work around this, but I am only a mediocre C coder. Can anyone enlighten me? Ryan Hulsker

[Dovecot] trouble accessing mbox folders with simultaneous logins

Hi all! I have setup dovecot (RPM) on a Fedora Core 2 machine using LDAP for authentication. It all seems to work pretty well, except for simultaneous logins. I am using mbox files to store the mail as follows (from /etc/dovecot.conf): default_mail_env = mbox:~/.mail/:INBOX=/var/mail/%u:INDEX=MEMORY So the INBOX file is stored in /var/mail, other mailfolders are stored in the users home directory in the .mail folder. Because the /home directory of this machine is mounted from fileserver through NFS, I have set the INDEX=MEMORY options (see http://www.dovecot.org/doc/nfs.txt) As said before I am getting some problems when using simultaneous logins for the same mail account (for instance when multiple users that work on a specific project want to share a mail account containing all the mail about the project in addition to their private account). The client used is Microsoft Outlook and besides some outlook specific problems, it also gives these errors (translated from Dutch) when many users are simultaneously logged in to the same account: 'Your server reported that a UID does not comply with the IMAP standard, which signifies an error on the server.' 'The UID of a message is unexpectedly deleted. This signifies an error on the server.' I am not sure where to look... I assume a problem with the index files? Does NFS cause the problem? Will this be fixed if I switch to maildirs? I would be grateful for any tips on the subject! I can help you narrow the problem down a bit. I'm assuming you're using 1.0-test45 or 46, in which case I see the same problem using mbox, index files stored on disk and no NFS. I access my mail via pine and chatter email (an imap client for the palm). While I've not seen any errors that specifically say UID, the client for the palm will occasionally reload messages from a few days back thinking they're new, which eventually crashes the client when the count of mail it should be loading doesn't match what it actually got (the palm client's in beta, too :) ). I solved the problem by moving back to the 0.99 series, which other than performance issues works just fine for me. - Michael ------------------- In response to: Hi all! [Dovecot] Slow squirrelmail login/IMAP CPU 80%

I've been having a problem with Dovecot on Fedora Core 2 with SquirrelMail on the same system. When ever I login through SquirrelMail the imap process consumes around 80% of my CPU and the login takes forever (about 10 minutes). 1 Once I do manage to login, everything is fine and can even log out and back in without issue. hi, i'd like to seperate the password file for seperate virtual domains into seperate files. i tried specifying: passdb = passwd-file /etc/exim_incoming/local/accounts/pwdb/%d but i get an error message that it couldn't open the particular file, and then Dovecot shuts down. is there a way to do lazy-lookups? or, would i be required to write a little helper program and have Dovecot connect to its socket to do auth? leon

Evolution has a nice feature where it can sort messages by the most recent received-by date, instead of the Date: header. This is nice, because then if something gets stuck on a server somewhere in the world for a couple of days, it shows up at the end of your mail list, instead of way back where you might miss it. However, when using dovecot with evo, if I sort of received by instead of date, it takes forever. I assume this is because date is indexed, and received by is not. So the natural question becomes, is there a way of getting dovecot to index received by? TIA.

Have been using dovecot since FC1 test-something, and latest working was couple of updates after FC3t2 (2.91 + devel updates). Tried downgrading with no luck, and can't figure out what's wrong. Setup is very standard Fedora, all defaults I guess, using postfix and Maildirs, and dovecot for imap access. What happens is when logging in and authenticated ok, the connection is dropped. So problem is for all accounts, both new, old and empty. Would be guessing some sort of permissions problem but should be running mostly as root in default mode? And the dovecot user seems to be ok and working, directory permissions are corrected at startup if it's wrong, and so on... I'm not an expert, might be something trivial, but cannot figure it out by myself or Google so mailinglists are next. Let me know if I should send some more information about the system. [Dovecot] Dovecot/IMP attachment problem

I recently installed dovecot in my production environment. This comprises about 60k mailboxes. The system was initially set up with dovecot 0.99.10.7 using maildirs. I have been using perdition to handle redirection during the process of converting from wu-imap. Last week it was brought to my attention that our webmail interface (horde/imp) is no longer allowing people to download attachments. Everything appears to work fine, however the downloaded files are 0 bytes in size. I built a test box with the latest horde/imp/php combination and that failed to solve the problem. Today I upgraded dovecot on one of our mail servers to 0.99.11 and that seems to have had no effect. I was hoping that the BODY and BODYSTRUCTURE changes from 99.10.8 would have fixed this. I am wondering if anyone has encountered these problems? Is this a dovecot bug? Due to the fact that I am still in transition mode using perdition I am in the unique position where I can basically hit two identical mailboxes, one in wu-imap and the other in dovecot just by using a different username. I have done this, and have ethereal traces if anyone is interested in helping me out with this. Ryan Hulsker

Hello, I'm having treuble setting up a ssl dovecot; here's some info: /etc/xinetd.d/pop3s: service pop3s { disable = no flags = REUSE socket_type = stream wait = no user = root group = root instances = UNLIMITED server = /usr/libexec/dovecot/pop3-login log_type = SYSLOG daemon info } I've setup the certificates, ssl_disable = no, protocols = imap pop3 pop3s ,but if I telnet on my server's port 995, I get the dovecot banner in clear-text. I'mt trying to make Dovecot run on Cygwin. I managed to make it compile and register as a service on Windows XP. I had a problem with setrlimit, but I disabled the process size limitation in the config file. Now, when I start the process, either by clicking the start button on the MS Managemente Console or by cygrunsrv -S dovecot, i get to error dialogs saying that the program needs cygcrypt-0.dll and cygwin1.dll. I have both of those libraries on the system but the program doesn't seem to see them. Do any of you have a clue about this? Hello list, I am running Dovecot 1.0-test46 on FreeBSD with PostgreSQL as backend, runs _very_ nice, but i can not set "default_pass_scheme = CRYPT" (only PLAIN) for PostgreSQL Auth in dovecot-pgsql.conf. I have a valid entry in pg_hba.conf (and reloaded/restarted): "local mail mail crypt" If i replace crypt in pg_hba.conf with md5 it works also with plain in dovecot-pgsql.conf? -- Christian. PS: sorry for my poore english.

We're currently on dovecot 0.99.10 with a few modifications (including one very nasty hack for the blank line at the beginning of the mailbox bug). We're using mbox all around. Everything works smoothly but we still ocasionally get corrupt mailboxes and indexes that need to be wiped out. I setup 1.0-test45 on one of our mailservers to start testing it and ran into a few issues. The first one is if I try to use mail_read_mmaped=yes I get this error: Error: POP3(sobo1): file istream-raw-mbox.c: line 410 (istream_raw_mbox_get_body_size): assertion failed: (rstream->mail_size != (uoff_t)-1) for every mailbox. If I switch to mail_read_mmaped=no everything works, but performance is extremely bad. I have a few test mailboxes with about 20k messages and if I toggle a message flag from unread to read, dovecot seems to re-read the entire mailbox up to that message (I saw this with strace). Is this how supposed to work?? I don't see behavior like this on 0.99.10, and on a mailbox with any substantial number of messages it really slows things down. Thanks for any input. - Mike

Hi all, This is probably a silly question, but I have a problem. I've had to move my users maildirs from: maildir:/home/%u/.Maildir To maildir:/data/mail/%u I've updated the MTA to put mail to the correct place and it's working fine. I've also changed the dovecot.conf file and restarted dovecot and I thought that would be all I needed to do. However, the users are getting lots of error messages, and looking in the relevant logs shows lots of entries like: Sep 28 14:03:36 <hostname> imap(<user1>): stat() failed with file /home/<user1>/.Maildir/new: No such file or directory Sep 28 14:03:36 <hostname> imap(<user2>): utime() failed with index file /home/<user2>/.Maildir/.INBOX/.imap.index: No such file or directory (Sorry for changing usernames and hostname, but I'm neurotic about that kind of thing) What have I missed? Or am I not supposed to move maildirs once they're in use? Hi all, I have a temporary fix in case anyone is reading the archives with the same problem. Link the old location to the new location. E.g: mv /home/user/.Maildir /data/mail/user ln -s /data/mail/user /home/user/.Maildir Still no idea why dovecot is still looking in the original folders though. [Dovecot] Thunderbird 0.8 - Inbox grayed out and does not update

Hi all, I cannot get Thunderbird 0.8 to work with my dovecot IMAP server. It works fine with my work IMAP account - I'm not sure what they are using. What happens is that folders that I create in Thunderbird or Evolution can only contain subfolders or messages, not a combination of both. Folders which contain subfolders and not messages show up in Thunderbird grayed out. I can expand them and view the subfolders and the messages within those. The Inbox however, also shows up grayed out. When I look inside I can see the messages that were there when I created the IMAP account in Thunderbird, however, no new messages arrive, even after restarting Thunderbird. If I connect with Evolution 1.4 I can read the inbox without a problem. Has anyone seen this? warm regards, Joshua

[Dovecot] Concerned about Dovecot's new NTLM code

I'm pleased to see another project increasing compatibility with windows clients, by the addition of NTLM login support, but I'm a bit worried about a few implementation details, and hope to offer an alternate approach. I mean no disrespect to those who have implemented to the code so far, but I feel that the idea of 'everybody re-implement NTLM' is prone to failure. Firstly, to bugs I've noticed by casual inspection of your implementation: - Unicode support is by 'null padding' - there is no real support for non-ascii characters. - NTLM2 (a negotiated scheme to avoid sending the LM response) is unsupported - NTLMSSP is NDR, not 'C struct pushed to the wire', it needs to be correctly marshaled and unmarshaled. There are other missing features, some of which are rumoured to become mandatory flags in future, but more importantly, because the implementation is standalone, it has no ability to integrate into an NT/Win2k/Samba domain. As part of the Samba team, I have worked with other projects - Squid in particular, to deliver server-side (and client-side) NTLMSSP authentication, without the need to re-implement the NTLMSSP protocol. This is done by a callout to 'ntlm_auth', a Samba 3.0 utility designed for this purpose, which in turn can contact domain controllers, allowing for seamless single sign on. http://samba.org/samba/docs/man/ntlm_auth.1.html I have recently completed reworking mod_ntlm_winbind for a similar purpose, and have patches for cyrus-sasl in my 'lorikeet' subversion repository. Hi, I have tried compiling the latest cvs version of dovecot on my FreeBSD 5.2.1-release box with the ports version of vpopmail: 5.4.3_1. In the configuration file I have two auth paragraphs, one for passwd authentication and one for vpopmail-auth: auth vpopmail { mechanisms = plain userdb = vpopmail passdb = vpopmail user = vpopmail } But the vpopmail dosn'nt work. I got the folowing in the log: Info: auth(vpopmail): vpopmail(stoffer(a)test.ek.dk): unknown user (stoffer(a)test.ek.dk) When I ktrace the dovecot process, it seams that it is trying to access the mysql db, but it ignores the settings in ~vpopmail/etc/vpopmail.mysql If I use the ports version of dovecot it works, but of course without the multiple auth capability since it is version 0.99... This makes Dovecot do writes to mbox only with EXPUNGE and CHECK commands and when mailbox is being closed. This is the same behaviour as with UW-IMAP. Especially useful for POP3 where most users just download the mails and delete everything - with this enabled Dovecot doesn't anymore go writing X-UID headers and whatever. Be careful anyway with this release, it seems to be working with me but mbox can get corrupted from simple mistakes. Other important fixes include: - handle UIDVALIDITY changes in mbox correctly - we might have overridden others dotlock files if they were being rapidly recreated with different processes - should fix syncing read-only mboxes (maybe dovecot.org finally stops giving internal errors :) - fixed several other mbox syncing issues which were quite rare without lazy writing - when sending lots of non-mail data to IMAP clients, Dovecot might have lost some of it causing weird problems. With pop3 it crashed with assert instead of losing data.

[Dovecot] Questions about mail process chroots

Greetings, I am configuring a new Dovecot installation, and the way the valid_chroot_dirs and mail_chroot variables affect the mail processes are a bit unclear to me. I was wondering if anyone could provide me with more specific details than the comments in the configuration file do, or maybe even recommend some values given my configuration. We have a Debian GNU/Linux system and a mix of users with shell accounts and users with disabled logins. Both these groups should be handled the same way by Dovecot: auth_userdb is passwd and auth_passdb is pam. The dovecot PAM service will use pam_mysql.so, if that matters. Mail is in mbox format (we have too many sticklers who are set in their ways, unfortunately); I'm thinking default_mail_env should be mbox:~/Mail/:INBOX=/var/mail/%u. So, if I understand correctly, (a) I should set chroots on the mail processes, since some of our users don't have real shell accounts, and (b) those processes will need access to /var/mail and home directories under /home. So my best guess is that I should set the chroot variables like this: valid_chroot_dirs = /var/mail:/home mail_chroot = /var/mail I'm not sure about this though, for a number of reasons. Do I need to even chroot at all, or do I misunderstand the comments? If I do need to chroot, the comments about valid_chroot_dirs warn very strongly that the chroot dirs should not be writeable by users. /home itself isn't writeable by users, but obviously their home directories are. Is listing /home also vulnerable to exploits? If it is, what would a good solution be? What's the meaning of /./ in mail_chroot? The comments about it, unfortunately, make no sense at all to me. It says that /home/./user is the same as /home, but if that's completely true, why wouldn't I just say mail_chroot = /home? I even looked into the source and it still wasn't really clear to me. [Dovecot] Lost messages with Mozilla and dovecot 0.99.x

I have just moved our corporate e-mail over to qmail/dovecot and am very happy with the performance. However, I have had two reports of messages going missing which may or may not be directly related to Dovecot. I was able to observe this in action this morning: 1) I got the user out of their e-mail client (Mozilla 1.7.2) and forced an email to be delivered. It showed up in Maildir/new. 2) I had the user log in using our webmail (Squirrelmail) and the message was visible to the client (and correctly moved to Maildir/cur). 3) The user then logged in using the Mozilla mail client and not only was the message not visible in the client, it was no longer on the disk! 4) This was completely repeatable, even if I deleted the .INBOX/index files and forced dovecot to rebuild. For the moment I am thinking this is a client problem, but I thought I'd mention it just in case it rang a bell with someone. I wound up installing 0.99.11 just for grins (I just moved these people to the new server and don't want to risk 1.00-test yet). I'm also going to look at whatever debugging messages are available in dovecot; it would be useful to see a log of all imap transactions, not just login, so I could confirm that it is the client process requesting that the files be deleted and not somethink with dovecot itself (or some hardware failure). For some reason I could never reproduce this problem with Linux or Solaris, but with OpenBSD it happened immediately. Stupid problem with marking output buffer empty if it was full and write() returned EAGAIN. Other changes include: - LDAP initialization crashed - fixed some compiler warnings and some issues with 64bit systems - fixed some memory leaks What bugs are there left?

hello, I know this is a question that has probably been answered before but I have searched for the answer and am yet to find it. I am running dovecot under fedora core 2 and cannot figure out where I set it so that users can create nested folders. At the moment they can only create one subfolder in most mail clients. however if using squirrelmail they can create nested folders but the folder whicch hosts the subfolders cannot contain mail messages as well as folders. Hi I was trying to build test40 (and then test42, since it came out in the mean time) on my fresh Solaris 9 box at home, and ran into a few snags. First problem was during the build. Make spat the dummy in the auth directory: Making all in auth make: Fatal error in reader: Makefile, line 701: Unexpected end of line seen Current working directory /home/pkg/dovecot-1.0-test42/src/auth So, I went and checked it out, to find what certainly looked to me like an error: 697:distclean-generic clean-generic maintainer-clean-generic clean \ 698:mostlyclean distclean maintainer-clean 699: 700: checkpassword-reply.c 701: 702:# Tell versions [3.59,3.63) of GNU make to not export all variables. Originally, I tried tacking that onto the end of the preceding list, but when the next problem came about, I tried commenting it out... with no joy. The next problem was in starting it. I've configured Dovecot before, and it runs great, keeping all the users at my work happy and supplied with spa... erm... e-mail. I also have an older test version installed on an old SparcStation 5 at home. But when I try to start it, it complains of not being able to drop root group privileges. I googled about for a bit, and found mention of ensuring the minimum GID level was set right... but still no joy. I'm at a loss. Any suggestions? Hi! I'm using WhiteBox Enterprise Linux 3.0, which is a re-compile distro of RedHat Enterprise Linux 3.0. I'm installing a new mail server and would like to use dovecot as it supports Maildir, which the default imapd does not. I've downloaded test43's tarball, and would prefer to use RPM to manage it. To that end, I've tried to do an rpmbuild, but get an error: [root@www src]# rpmbuild -ta dovecot-1.0-test43.tar.gz error: line 7: Illegal char '-' in version: Version: 1.0-test43 I tried untaring the tarball and looking at the dovecot.spec file, and sure enough on line 7 is a reference to "Version: 1.0-test43". The problem is that if I take out the '-', and try rpmbuild, I get more errors. I'm not an expert in this stuff...has anybody else managed to get this working? It would sure make my life easier (I think). Ben

[Dovecot] Weird behaviour with multiple accounts pointing to same maildir

I'm finding this a little strange. I'm putting together a mail server that will (someday, hopefully) serve a lot of email addresses for a lot of domains. To make life easy, each account name is the full mail name ... i.e "joe(a)domain.com" instead of just "joe" Mail is stored in Maildirs, and the user account information is all in MySQL. Delivery is handled by Postfix. Everything seems nice and clean, except ... If I create multiple accounts that all use the same Maildir for delivery (i.e. joe_smith(a)domain.com, js(a)domain.com, js(a)otherdomain.com) it seems to work well. Except that the user can _only_ log in as the first record in the database via IMAP. (i.e. in the example above, the user could log in as joe_smith(a)domain.com, but not the others) Logging in as the others does not produce any erros (that I can find, anyway) but the user can't see his/her mail. I'm rather stumped as to why this is happening. Each record in the database that points to a particular Maildir is identical except for the userid. In the example above, logging in as the 2nd or 3rd account shows folders created, but not the mail in them. Hello. I am trying to install Dovecot 0.99.10.9 on a FreeBSD 4.10 system from the ports collection (latest via cvsup). When running make, I get the message: dovecot-0.99.10.9 Currently incompatible with security/gnutls This is in contrast to the Dovecot web page which states that it does support GNUtls and OpenSSL. I am not really interested in gnutls/openssl support at this time. Is there a way I can install this port without gnutls/openssl?. Mulberry has the ability to log the IMAP exchange client-side. Is there an equivalent logging feature in Dovecot (0.99) to log the IMAP exchange server-side? My problem is that Mulberry is displaying some complex MIME structures incorrectly (eg. nested/forwarded messages) but it seems to go away if I close a folder and re-open it. I'm suspecting that Dovecot is reporting the wrong structure on first access and then fixes something on subsequent accesses. I'd like to log the FETCH result with the structure information to see if I can spot this happening.

[Dovecot] Fedora Core 2, dovecot, and Outlook Express

After the aging harddrive in my Redhat 7.2 server died, I decided it was time to upgrade. I bought a new harddrive and did a fresh install of Fedora Core 2. I've managed to get www, ssh and sendmail reconfigured, but I'm having a heck of a time with imap. I first fooled around with cyrus-imapd, and couldn't make head or tail of it, so I downloaded a fedore core 1 imapd rpm and installed it. That almost worked, but I could only see the INBOX. Next I tried dovecot. Via Outlook Express from my winXP box, I can Refresh the IMAP folder list, and see the INBOX and the sent-mail and saved-messages folders that were created when I first ran pine. However, if I try and mark sent-mail or saved-messages as Visible, I get an "Invalid mailbox name: saved-message/" error. And when I try and view the contents of Inbox, I get "Mailbox doesn't exist: INBOX/". I tried running evolution on the server, and I could subscribe and view the INBOX. But when I try and make a new folder, it gives me a "Cannot create the specified folder. Generic error" I'm hoping I just have something misconfigured, potential due to messing around with cyrus-imapd and imapd, or perhaps even pine. Anyone have any suggestions? I'm pretty close to giving up on fedora core 2 and installing core 1, or perhaps mandrake. --Joe Hartford

i'd *really* like to get to maildir. so here it is, one last time.... using 0.99.x, can i have an mbox spool file and Maildir folders? for just one account? if i can do that, then it'll be a lot easier to transition the whole mess to Maildir. i use procmail called from postfix to deliver mail. is that going to be an issue for delivery? if i don't set DEFAULT and just change all my sort rules to deliver to Maildir folders then i can have it continue to deliver mbox to the inbox-spool and Maildir to the folders? -brian -- "The cats tend to administer themselves, and contrary to the expected facts, the house and everything in it was installed for their benefit." -- Nic Clews

[Dovecot] duplicate message headers in Thunderbird with dovecot server

I've been trying to diagnose some strange interaction between dovecot and Mozilla Thunderbird. If two clients are connected to a dovecot IMAP server, Mozilla-based clients start showing multiple messages in the message list for each message that arrives after the sessions were started. There is really only one copy of the message in the mbox file on the server. However, its UID changes repeatedly during the session, and Mozilla gets confused. From looking at Thunderbird's log of the IMAP conversation, it seems the message sequence number does not change, and I'm guessing that other clients handle the situation better because of this. Nevertheless, I found this in the IMAP RFC 3501, so my interpretation is that there is a dovecot bug involved: The unique identifier of a message MUST NOT change during the session, and SHOULD NOT change between sessions. Any change of unique identifiers between sessions MUST be detectable using the UIDVALIDITY mechanism discussed below. Persistent unique identifiers are required for a client to resynchronize its state from a previous session with the server (e.g., disconnected or offline access clients); this is discussed further in [IMAP-DISC]. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Is there a known solution? Greetings, all Last night I migrated our mail between two machines... both running dovecot 0.99.xx. In the process, I wanted to make some small changes, namely that new mail be delivered to mboxs in /var/mail/%u and IMAP mail stored in Maildirs at ~/.imap ... I tried using: default_mail_env = maildir:~/.imap/:INBOX=mbox:/var/mail/%u But had no luck. Is it only 1.0 that can work with two different mailbox formats? Or did I screw up somewhere else? I've been having IMAP sessions "freeze" with fetchmail trying to retrieve larger e-mails, typically over 20K and always with an attachment. When I switch to POP3 I am able to retrieve the same e-mails just fine. This started at test33. I'm currently using test42 on a OpenBSD 3.5/macppc system with Maildir.

Hi, I'm running 0.99.10 on OpenBSD 3.4/i386, with Squirrelmail as the only client. I recently had dovecot fail with this in syslog: Sep 10 14:34:55 pirx imap(alisgray): Corrupted index file /home/alisgray/mail/.imap/INBOX/.imap.index: Invalid offset returned by binary tree: 118 Sep 10 14:34:55 pirx dovecot: child 20827 (imap) killed with signal 11 Poking around some, I see that dovecot.org recommends mmap_no_write=yes for OpenBSD... but that option's not implemented in 0.99.10, afaics. Does the symptom I'm seeing match the expected failure mode of OpenBSD's noncoherent mmap? I deleted .imap.* (after saving a backup) and that seems to have fixed the problem. I can provide a copy of the bad file for debugging, if necessary. And of course, if it's a known bug fixed in 1.0-test, I'd be happy to upgrade. -andy

Hi, i just discover dovecot, and it's what i always wanted to have i read that it support qmail Maildir, i use postfix, but read on postfix site that postfix Maildir are compatible with qmail. so i have something like /var/mail/vhosts/domaine.tld/testuser/ i tried a simple setup to 'test' auth_userdb = static uid=500 gid=500 home=/var/mail/vhosts/%d/%n auth_passdb = passwd-file /usr/pkg/etc/dovecot-passwd.conf all thing work exept that i don't see my email. dovecot has created /var/mail/vhosts/domaine.tld/testuser/mail/ and it seems that inbox email are stored in /var/mail/vhosts/archives.jeb.be/test3/mail/inbox (i have put an email on my inbox folder into my email client) but when i get a mail it's in /var/mail/vhosts/archives.jeb.be/.new/ so i'am wondering what is wrong, thank you, -- Jean-Edouard BABIN Mail: Jeb(a)jeb.com.fr Web : www.Jeb.com.fr IRC : Jeb @ Undernet

not sure where to go from here.... OS : Red Hat Fedora 2.6.5-1.358 #1 sendmail: sendmail dovecot version : 0.99.10.5 i can send email to the server. the email is then appended to the /var/mail/{user} file. i can view the /var/mail/{file} and see the email. i cannot retrieve the email from the local machine using Ximian Evolution (version 1.4.6). however if i use good ole #mail in a terminal it access the file and reads all emails. also as an added twist if i type in an incorrect email for the receiving email server it fails to login. however if i change it back it gets pass the login but it just hangs at retrieving messages. (again this is all on the local machine) i am sure i am just leaving out a pointer or permissions, or something crazy like that... thanks in advance Jack Taffar

http://dovecot.org/test/ I think this release should be quite stable one. - fixes parsing mails with header lines longer than 8192 bytes - cache file corruption fixes - fixed "corrupted offset in mbox file" errors - don't return extra INBOX replies in LIST Those mbox and cache problems were pretty tricky to figure out. Thanks to Tomi Hakala for tons of testing while I tried to fix them. I've also began working with keywords support which hopefully doesn't take too long to finish. After that 1.0-alpha1 should be near.

Hello, dovecot-1.0-test32 continuously fails on one of our customers mboxes with the following error: Sep 11 16:27:15 web dovecot: POP3(xxxxxxxxxxxxx.de1): file mbox-sync-rewrite.c: line 360 (mbox_sync_read_and_move): assertion failed: (need_space == -mails[idx].space) About 200 other mboxes are working perfectly on the same server. Hey all, I've been testing out Dovecot, and it works nicely. However, when I tried to roll it to my production server, I'm getting the following error: Sep 10 17:14:22 tungsten imap-login: opendir(".") failed when trying to get list of authentication servers: Stale NFS file handle Any ideas on what I can do for this? I am running on a NFS root filesystem on the production server, so that's likely where this error is coming from. Hi First of all thanks to the authors of dovecot. It's a pleasure to work with it. I would like to ask, if somebody has an idea about how I can combine all mailusers (dovecot pop/imap & sendmail smtp) into one db, given that I'd like to use sasl with CRAM-MD5 as authentication mechanism to ensure security. The idea behind my question is, that it is easier to administer all mail users, which in my case are mostly non-interactive users, into one db, instead of creating native unix accounts for them.
