hi, now as dovecot can be more and more conf files it'd be better to move all of the to a same place under eg. /etc/dovecot/. or if this is a simple setup may be one /etc/dovecot.conf can be enough, but all other files in the examples and docs can point into /etc/dovecot/{sql.conf,acl,dict-quota.conf} etc. just my 2c. yours. -- Levente "Si vis pacem para bellum!"

This is for Dovecot 1.0.rc15 from Debian Backports on 3.1 Stable, x86; Filesystems are local reiserfs; IMAPs client is KMail 1.9.5 Non-default settings in dovecot.conf: protocols = imaps ssl_cert_file = /etc/dovecot/mail.cert.pem ssl_key_file = /etc/dovecot/mail.key.pem mail_location = maildir:/var/mail/ambrosia.plus.com/%n mail_extra_groups = mail first_valid_uid = 1000 first_valid_gid = 1000 umask = 007 maildir_copy_with_hardlinks = yes To reproduce:- 1. Using your IMAP client with two IMAP accounts, copy a message from a folder in one account, to a folder in the other account 2. See that the newly created message file is -rw------- If a message is moved between folders on the _same_ account, however, the group permissions are preserved (ie not masked off). So it seems that the umask option is ineffective when the imap daemon creates a new maildir message file. Thanks, Steve. -- BOFH excuse #400: We are Microsoft. [Dovecot] Unable to authenticate with Pam

Hi, I'm trying to solve this problem for several weeks and this is a SOS! I've 2 Debian server runing heartbeat and drbd for high availability. I'm using LDAP for user database, PAM for authentication and Dovecot for Pop3s access. On the master server all is fine. If dovecot is started on the slave server (instead of the master) it does not accept to authenticate with the pam/ldap. Between the 2 servers there is just a release level of some filesets wich is different, but it do not concern dovecot, nor pam, nor ldap! I can provide a diff file. The problem occur if the ldap server is on the same node _and_ if it is on the other node. Ok, so now I have 1.0 running. That error I had before went away, but now I have a new error. When I do "USER user(a)foo.org" over a telnet to dovecot on my test server I get "-ERR Plaintext authentication disabled." as a response. Hi all, I'm working on setting up dovecot on a test system. When I try to start dovecot I get this error: Fatal: Error in configuration file /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf line 504: Expecting '=' Line 504 in my config is this: auth default { passdb sql { args = /usr/local/etc/dovecot-sql.conf } userdb sql { args = /usr/local/etc/dovecot-sql.conf } } I don't see how that can be wrong because the dovecot docs mention exactly such a structure and I used the same syntax: http:// wiki.dovecot.org/BasicConfiguration Any clues would be much appreciated, Patrick P.S. hi all, some time ago i remember have had read (on the wiki) that dovecot couldn't work with pam against nss_ldap but i've build a setup using etch's dovecot rc15 and seems to work fine until now thru the server has a low usage (50 users). congratulations for such a nice imap server :)

Hi, I want to store my folders somewhere else, it used be in ~/mail. Is this as easy as moving everything in ~/mail to /var/mail/ and editing /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf to read mail_location=mbox:~/mail:INBOX=/var/mail/%u ? [Dovecot] Solaris NFS woes

I am using dovecot 1.0.rc15 (a similar problem occurred in rc10) on Solaris 9 (sparc). When working with a user who's home dir is on a local disk everything seems fine. But when that home is on an NFS-mounted disk things are very badly awry. Both the indices and the subscriptions file are being destroyed and what is left behind are files with names of the form .nfs72C034 etc. These files are described in the shell script nfsfind - every Solaris system ships with a root cron to run nfsfind and delete stale files: # These files are created by NFS clients when an open file # is removed. To preserve some semblance of Unix semantics # the client renames the file to a unique name so that the # file appears to have been removed from the directory, but # is still usable by the process that has the file open. I dont't see why dovecot would be unlink'ing it's active files while running - but I actually managed to see the dovecot.index.log appear briefly and then change to a .nfsXXXX file during the test user login. dovecot.index always seems to exist correctly but from local tests I know there should be a dovecot-uidlist, dovecot.index.cache, dovecot.index.log too, and these all appear to be .nfsXXXX files I can't seem to find anything relating to this specific problem in the archives, although these files have been mentioned a few times. And yes I do have mmap_disable = yes (but that is only relevant to the indexes, and the same thing is happening to the subscriptions file - ie some common library code for dealing with files has an issue) I should also note that these NFS mounts have been in existence for years and lots of things are running through them, so there shouldn't be anything wrong there. Hi, I would like to disallow dovecot to read its base_dir (mode 0310). This is currently not possible, because settings_verify() in src/master/master-settings.c will "fix" the directory mode to 0750. Hi, I have created symlinks to all the mail folders with caps in their name. but that does not solve the issue. If a user types in mixed case username( e.g. RtNaiR for rtnair ), dovecot creates a new mailfolder for that username; Is there a way to instruct dovecot not to create a mailbox and throw an error if the folder does not exist? raja. Having some problems with setting up a proxy with any authentication mechanisms other than PLAIN. My passwords are stored in my database in plaintext (and MD5), so I figure I could use whatever scheme I want. Using the latest RC15. MySQL for the backend. This first one is CRAM-MD5. Now, the password should be NULL, since I dont want to do any authentication on the Proxy, but simply forward it off to let the destination host handle it. Now the host that the proxy sends it off to works fine when I connect to it directly. I have the same default mechanisms allowed on both Proxy and destination. Anybody have any clues? I'd really like to figure out how to proxy "secure password" requests to my destination server without having to rely on plaintext. Plaintext works fine with the proxy, but I am unable to get anything else working. Am I overlooking something obvious? Thanks, Cassidy

[Dovecot] Trash and quota

I can't seem to find the magic combination to get dovecot to ignore the trash folder when counting quota. I've got 1.0rc15 and using maildir quotas. Not being able to trash messages when over quota is quite annoying. the docs suggest the following: plugin { quota = maildir:storage=10240:ignore=Trash } but as my quotas are defined per user via mysql DB, I'm thinking that I need a modified version such as: plugin { quota = maildir:ignore=Trash } Which does not work. just in case it's a semantic problem, I also tried: plugin { quota = maildir:ignore=INBOX.Trash } which also doesn't work. [Dovecot] considering dovecot

Hi all. I'm making a case to use Dovecot over Courier and would like some feedback. I've searched the web extensively and have been unable to find any hard information regarding Dovecot's IMAP performance. I've got some pressure to use Courier but my gut tells me that Dovecot should be much faster. In particular, I will have typical users with mailboxes exceeding 10,000 emails and in some cases up to 100,000. Courier might be the "safe" choice but I'm not confident it can handle inboxes with that many messages. Dovecot, with its indexes, should be much, much faster. Can anyone point me to some benchmarks or production uses of dovecot that bear this out? From my research, Courier maildrop appears to be what I need for local delivery. Is it possible to use Maildrop for local delivery with Dovecot? Or is the Dovecot LDA needed to update the maildir indexes? I also need the capability for users to set their own vacation messages via a web page. Maildrop looks to handle this easily (by allowing me to link the maildrop filter to a file with the vacation message) but I don't see similar capability with the Sieve plugin. I do see where I can create a vacation message with Sieve but the text of the message seems to be required to reside within the Sieve script. Perhaps I'm missing something? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

[Dovecot] problem on "multiple addresses"

I have do a search on google but found nothing.. My configuration is: RH ES3 Dovecot 1.0.0.4 from atrpms (dovecot-1.0-0_4_stable20050221.el3.at) My problem is.. my mailbox has 2 internet (interface A, ip 1.2.3.4 and interface B, 9.8.7.6) and 1 intranet (interface C, 192.168.0.x) access. Default route is on interface A. pop3/imap access from connection A & C has no problem at all. But, any connection from interface B it will get a timeout error. I can sure routing is correct.. since I have virtual host on web server and running ftp server, I tested it connecting from both IP it shows no error.. Anyone can give me some hints to fix it ?? thanks in advance.

Hi! I am using courier IMAP with maildrop as LDA. I started reading about dovecot and i like started to feel that i can switch to it. I have couple questions mostly about dovecot's LDA. My main problem with maildrop is that i have to create manualy user directories grr. All my domains are set up as virtual with postfix. So when i add new accout thru my web panel and i have to create user dir manually. This is really annoying thing. Maildrop checks if there is user dir before delivering mail. If not it report error. I want to know if dovecot's LDA create automaticly user dirs or not. I need also filtering language in LDA and i kknow that LDA has option to use sieve scrips. Generaly i am not sure that dovecot will be a good choice to switch from courier. Could anybody help me ? -- best regards, Bartosz Giza

[Dovecot] Shared folder subscriptions

Hello! I have this shared folder: namespace public { separator = / prefix = Public/ location = maildir:/var/mail/public } It is accessible for all users in a specific group (mode 770, umask 0007). Users in that group should always be subscribed to all subfolders, so I did not use a different CONTROL for each user. All of our IMAP users were in that group, until now. I added a new user and she should not be able to access the public folder. She is not in the right group, so everything is okay, except that her e-mail client TRIES to open Public. It is because she is also subscribed to that folder. My question is: is it possible to have different control files for different groups of users? Having a different control file for each user would not be good for me, it would cause lot trouble. Having the same control file for all users is also bad, I would get many complaints because error messages would show up. In the worst case I can write a script that automatically subscribes everybody to the correct folders, but this would be very clumsy. Any ideas? Thanks, Laszlo

Is a RDBMS required for Dovecot to run in small (SOHO) environments? (Does it store indexes to the mail, etc.?) Or is it strictly leveraged for larger-scale environments? I'm asking, because the INSTALL says ./configure and make is enough for most...but as my previous post requested...there isn't anywhere that lists Required Packages/Software. We need to get that out there before 1.0RC becomes 1.0! :) -AJ

I'm using files for passwords that look like the unix passwd and shadow files, except each domain has it's own pair of shadow and password files for that domain. And dovecot works fine with that. So - here's my off topic question. I'm trying to create a PHP interface to allow user to change their password in these passwd / shadow file combos. What kind of encryption do they use and specifically what PHP command would I use to encrypt a password like the shadow file has? Thanks in advance.

Hi! As a new user, I'm trying to set up a postfix + dovecot combination, and so far all is running smoothly. I'm using the guidelines that came with postfix and adjusting them as I go. My user and alias database is stored in MySQL, using the scheme from 'PostfixAdmin' (http://high5.net/page9.html) and I am using the dovecot LDA 'deliver' to drop messages into mailboxes that exist solely as virtual users. Users can login using both pop3 and imap, and retrieve the e-mails sent directly to them, so I'm happy with that. One of the features supported by postfix, and required for my setup is recipient delimiters. Using recipient delimiters, you can basically send extra information in the e-mail address, to maybe deliver the message into subfolders directly, or to run anti-spam software such as TMDA against. Hi, The company that I work for are currently looking at a changeover in clients from pegasus mail(v4) to Thunderbird (v1.5.0.8). We run dovecot (v 0.99.13) with mbox. We currently have a bunch of shared folders sitting in a dummy imap account that they all connect to and view. I have read that problems with Thunderbird have been encountered with this setup due to multiple connections to the account and that a possible solution is to convert from mbox to maildir. I was simply wondering if anyone knows anything about this, as I don't seem to be able to find any information on it other than a single thread with a single comment with what seems like anecdotal evidence rather than something acknowledged. Hello, I'm using 0.99.14 with debian 2.6.8-2-386 #1 Tue Aug 16 12:46:35 UTC 2005 i686 GNU/Linux and exim4. I use the shared folder with symlinks, created by the script create_dovecot_shares-1.06. I have set the permissions and use umask 0007 on dovecot and in exim in maildir_home: directory_mode = 0770 mode = 0660 every thing works well, but if I'm moving a mail from my inbox with thunderbird into the shared mailbox it gets permissions -rw------- 1 user group 11811 2006-12-09 12:58 1165785386.P10056Q2M666099.blupp:2,Sa instead of -rw-rw---- 1 xxx group 31970 2006-12-10 17:26 1165767986.H344527P28279.blupp:2,Sb What am I doing wrong? kind regards Uwe

[Dovecot] 'NO' 'Unknown error'

Dear List, I'm writting a program in Python that connects to a dovecot server and copies/moves messages across different shared folders. The program throws an error while executing this IMAP command: UID COPY 232 Archive/Notifications The same program works fine with other directories and messages. This is the response from the dovecot server: ('NO', ['Unknown error']) Do you have an idea what is the problem? This error message is very cryptic, it does not tell anythig about what is causing the problem and how to fix it. By the way, I'm using dovecot-1.0.r7_2 on FreeBSD 6.1-RELEASE. I cannot upgrade to a newer - I had to downgrade to r7 before because dovecot did not find the inboxes of my POP3s users. (But it did find the same inboxes for my IMAPs users.) Thanks, Laszlo

Greetings, I am trying to make my antispam protection on user basis. So I need something like .junkmail folder in every user maildir. But the problem I am having is that my mail client can not download mail put in .junkmail folder. I am usin POP3 only, Maildir mailboxes (default_mail_env = maildir:/var/mail/%u) and whether I make folder with leadin dot or not it is never shown in mail client. Sincerely I don`t even know if it is posible with POP3, but it would be very hard converting to IMAP at this moment. Thanks in advance.

Hi all, my environment: dovecot-1.0.rc15 Fedora Directory Server 1.0.2 Currently I've configured dovecote to find user's mail folder like this: dovecot.conf mail_location = maildir:/var/vmail/%d/%u/Maildir All my domain mailboxes are under /var/vmail, as evident. But there are some users whose mail folders are directly under /var/vmail like this one: /var/vmail/myuser1(a)mydomain1.com also, some have their folder names starting with caps like: /var/vmai/mudomain1.com/Myuser1(a)mydomain1.com This creates problems when these users try to login. Here I want dovecote to kind of assemble the mail storage path from mailMessageStore ldap attribute of the particular user. i.e, dovecot should add the mailMessageStore attribute's value to /var/vmail. [Dovecot] Huge IMAP folder takes forever

Hi! Just updated to 1.0 rc15, but the problem remains. I think it could be client-dependent to some extent. I have only IMAPS access and Maildir. I have one mailbox which contains some 10,200 mails. That mailbox takes forever (have waited 30 minutes and then aborted) to open with Thunderbird 1.5.0.7. Other mailboxes (like dovecot :-), only 6984 mails) opens quickly. When Thunderbird tries to open this folder, the imap process on the server uses roughly all cpu resources. There isn't much disk I/O, at least as far as I can tell by listening at the server. The dovecot is upgraded from 0.99.something. Should I remove index files first, and in that case which? Is there something cached in Thunderbird? I haven't tried this yet; however, I would like to know if it would work. Using Postfix, I am setting up numerous virtual users. These users obviously do not have an account on the mail server. I have created a "domain.net" account. Assuming that Postfix is properly set up to deliver to the specified accounts, which will be held under the "domain.net" directory, will this work in the dovecot.conf file: # default_mail_env = maildir:/var/mail/%d/%u or do I need to modify it somehow? -- Gerard

[Dovecot] Full text search indexing

There are now two full text search backends in CVS HEAD: - squat: My own full text search index based on ideas from Cyrus Squat indexes. Supports substring searches. - lucene: Uses CLucene library. It should be pretty easy to add support for more backends. As I've explained a couple of times already, IMAP RFC says that searches are done by matching substrings, so the Lucene backend isn't fully RFC compliant. Currently it's anyway used to optimize standard SEARCH BODY/TEXT rules, but I'll probably make it optional and instead add new X-NONEXACT-BODY/TEXT rules. Then it will be possible to use both Lucene and Squat backends to optimize different searches (eg. Lucene for your modified webmail and Squat for standard IMAP clients). The Squat index finally worked better than I thought. It has two limitations: - Search strings must be at least 4 characters long - Those 4 characters can't contain spaces So eg. searching for "ip add" doesn't work, but "ip addr" does. By "doesn't work" I mean it fallbacks to the slow old way of going through all the mails. The space limitation exists only because I thought that such searches are going to be rare, and this reduces the index size by 20-50%. So the Squat indexing works by looking at 4 character blocks. So when searching for "address": - Get a list of UIDs for "ress" - Filter out UIDs which don't appear for "dres" - The same for "ddre" and "addr" - Open all the messages that are left in the UID list and drop out the messages where the whole "address" word doesn't exist. I think searching the words backwards usually finds fewer hits and makes the search faster. As for the index sizes, indexing my dovecot mbox with 7495 messages and size of 32479980 bytes it produced: dovecot.index.search : 2166526 bytes dovecot.index.search.uids : 6074155 bytes So that's about 25% of the mailbox size. Last I checked, Cyrus Squat took about 120% (with different messages). Anyway as you can see the uids file is larger than the search trie file, so the number of messages is more important in determining the index size than the number of bytes. The initial index build is pretty slow, but adding new messages to the existing index should be pretty fast. The new messages aren't indexed until client does a SEARCH BODY/TEXT. I'm not sure if the messages should be optionally indexed immediately as they're seen (or even added by Dovecot LDA). Oh and another difference to Cyrus Squat is that Dovecot's version indexes 16bit characters and not bytes. So non-English messages get indexed much more nicely. If you want to try this yourself, you'll need to add: protocol imap { .. mail_plugins = fts fts_squat } plugin { fts = squat }

This is probably the easier route. Another easy solution might to use tcp-wrappers and reply to all connections to port 110 with -ERR Please contact ... Some (most?) mail readers will pop this message to the user. Another solution which I employed (for another reason) is to make your own mini-dameon which enters into a fake POP session. Just allow any authentication information and server up your fake notice. The POP3 protocol is fairly simple and you only have to implement a small subset of commands: user(noop), pass(noop), list, stat, retr, top, rset(noop), noop(noop), dele(noop), quit. I return a "OK" for most of these commands and most of them are noops. I'd like to store all of my mail in maildir, but I want to store the inbox and indices on fast storage and everything else on deep storage. I began with listing any and every typical folder in its own namespace like: namespace private { separator = / hidden = yes prefix = drafts location = maildir:/data/deep/%Ld/mail/%Ln/drafts } namespace private { separator = / hidden = yes prefix = templates location = maildir:/data/deep/%Ld/mail/%Ln/templates } namespace private { separator = / hidden = yes prefix = sent location = maildir:/data/deep/%Ld/mail/%Ln/sent } and so on, but that doesn't seem very elegant. Also, namespaces scare me for client compatibility. Am I missing something obvious?

[Dovecot] Extra inbox problem

One of my users (who uses Outlook) has lost all her folders that were inside her INBOX. She collects her mail by IMAP. I have confirmed that she has no folders in her INBOX. However, if I use Pine, I can see a couple of extra folders, "INBOX." and "Junk Email." that I don't think should be there. There already folders by that name but without the dot on the end. If I look in "INBOX." I can see the folders she's missing and the folder that they contain etc. I backed up and moved the files listed under .maildir, and Dovecot recreated them, but it made no difference to the problem. I don't understand why those extra folders appear in Pine, but not Outlook. Kind regards, Steve

[Dovecot] rc15 dumped core

We have been running rc15 since Sunday experiencing no trouble, but today one user crashed. rc15 on Solaris-5.9, the server had app 6GB free memory at the time of the crash, app 70% idle running with an avg.load at 4 of 8 processors available. The USER's INBOX was quite smooth, app 13MB containing 320 messages. The core dump was accompanied with these log-entries: Nov 23 2006 12:27:00 [local3.error] IMAP(USER): Corrupted index cache file imapindex/USER/.imap/INBOX/dovecot.index.cache: invalid field header size 12:28:23 [local3.error] IMAP(USER): mremap_anon(1164206080) failed: Not enough space 12:28:23 [local3.error] IMAP(USER): mremap_anon(8192) failed: Invalid argument 12:28:24 [local3.error] child 17510 (imap) killed with signal 10 12:28:25 [local3.info] imap-login: Login: user=<USER>, method=PLAIN, rip=000.177.00.21, pid=19178 We have been observing a few of the 'invalid field header size' messages while running rc15. But as this USER, others seem to recover after the message has been logged. The messages from 'mremap_anon' have never been seen before. Actually '1164206080' looks very much like a timestamp, differing 75223 seconds from the time of the crash ... spooky I will start running the supplied code for memory debugging on this user and I enclose a back trace from the crash. The interessting stuff from the back trace is probably that hdr (and so cache->hdr) is 0xffffffff so that hdr->continued_record_count gives no sense (Cannot access memory at address 0xb) but cache->index->map->records_count is 320 Still on this and another server running rc15 (Sol5.8), we have thousands of happy users beeing served very fast by Dovecot. hmk
