[Dovecot] mail directory in user home?

Hey: When I run dovecot and retrieve any mail for a user, a mail directory is created in the users home. It has a subdirectory Inbox. No mail goes there however, it all goes to /var/spool/username. [Dovecot] Problem with configure.in in dovecot-stable CVS

I am having trouble with using dovecot-stable from CVS. I get the following error when running autogen.sh: configure.in: 4: required file `./[config.h].in' not found I see the config.h.in file in the root dir, but I cannot figure out what the brackets are for. If I modify the file and remove the brackets, it works properly and I can compile dovecot. What are the brackets in the name for? Am I breaking something by removing them? Hello, I tried the v1.0 test of dovecot, because it should make the directories for me. I configured it and installed it. The old one is still there, but I shut it down to test the other version. When I start the new v1.0 test of dovecot i get the following message in my log: Jun 6 13:33:08 APOLLO dovecot: Dovecot v1.0-test72 starting up Jun 6 13:33:09 APOLLO dovecot: Auth process died too early - shutting down Jun 6 13:33:09 APOLLO dovecot: auth(default): dovecot-auth: Fatal: USERDB environment is unset Jun 6 13:33:09 APOLLO dovecot: child 18610 (auth) returned error 89 What does that mean? On Sat, Mar 13, 2004, somone posted a note which read: It seems dovecop pop3 server sometimes inserts a blank line at the top of the mbox. It only happens for certain users not all. I'm not sure why it's doing that. Looking back into the mailing list, I saw the same post in Oct 6, 2003 but there was no reply to it. Is there a patch or fix that i can use to get around the blank line? I did not see any replies to this post. Hello, I try to create IMAP archives for our mailing lists (runned by mailman). I run dovecot 1.0-stable from a recent CVS checkout. The obvious version with mboxes works without problems. However, when I try to use maildir storage I run into the following problem: -a message is sent to the list -mailman calls the external archiver (maildrop) which delivers the mail to a normal mbox (for cross-check) and a maildir. -in the client (Outlook 2003) the mail in the mbox shows up immediately. However the mail in the maildir only shows up in the client after an indefinite time (2 minutes, 10 minutes...etc.). As the thing works with mbox I would rule out Outlook IMAP as a problem. Is there anything I could try to set in the dovecot configuration? I already did the following adjustments: -enabled outlook workaround -changed mail_check_idle_interval to 1 Do you have any idea what could be the problem? Should I start debugging the code, or am I just missing something? Thanks, Gergely PS: I would like to use maildir because it is much easier to backup. Mboxes are a pain in the ass in this respect. The only backup solution I could find was rdiff-backup, which doesn't integrate well with ordinary backup solutions like Bacula.

Hi! I need use dovecot on 3 servers. Home directory and mail spool shared over NFS in pop3/pop3s only mode (no imap). What details for dovecot config need set? When I try 2-servers config, some time I get in log: Jun 7 04:31:01 cluster2 pop3(andy(a)atomail.com): IndexID mismatch for binary tree file /home/plasma/andy(a)atomail.com/mail//.imap/INBOX/.imap.index.tree But mail client not show any errors. Hi, I'm running dovecot-0.99.11-2.EL4.1 in RHEL4 and a couple of hours ago, I could not longer login in the imap or pop3 service. I noted that I have a process like this: root 8130 0.0 0.0 0 0 ? Z 16:55 0:00 [dovecot-auth] <defunct> It this ok to have a defunct proccess? I can not kill this process. I have to stop the dovecot service, killall pop3-login and imap-login and then start dovecot again. Is there a solution for this? Any hint? I already enabbled the debug of dovecot-auth. Dear list, I am planing to set up dovecot-imapd on my production-mail server which currently only runs pop3 via qpopper on debian-sarge. It would be best, if I could only use imapd and use the existing pop3- server (qpopper) as it is. Is this possible? Can the user both use pop3 (qpopper) and imapd (dovecot) in parallel then? Where does dovecot-imapd store its mails? Does it store its mail in mbox-format in ~/mail, where also e.g. pine or mutt can access the mbox? Pretty dumb question I guess, but I want to make sure that nothing goes wrong during installation. It is a must that nothing changes on the server for my users. Hello, I got the error failed to create storage data. I changed some things and now I get the following message: mkdir(/home/mail/domain.nl/info/.Trash) failed: No such file or directory The directory for domain.nl is not created either. Other emailaccounts which were running very good already have no problem. Can anyone give me a direction what the problem could be? thanks, Alex

I have Fedora Core 2 and dovecot-0.99.10.5-0. I've done nothing to configure it but it seems to have found the Mail dir in my home directory ok and I can connect using IMAP. But I can't create subfolders. If I right click on inbox, there's a 'New Folder...', but if I create one then right click on it, no more 'New Folder...'. Hi, I'm running dovecot on a small server. I put all my mail from the last 10 years on it (approx. 160 mb). I'm seeing terrible performance. Sometimes, my client needs several minutes to display a message. This is with mutt, thunderbird and evolution. Copying an outbound message to the Sent IMAP folder (15k messages) typically takes a few minutes, but can be quite fast on occasion (Thunderbird). How can I debug this problem? The 2.2.1 patch works fine on Postfix 2.2.3 but not on the 2.3 snapshots. Any plans to update it for 2.3? On a similar subject, Timo, are you going to try again to get it accepted by Wietse? If so I'd try to help out with the documentation part. I'm just not sure he'll accept it anyway, what with Dovecot auth only being used by Dovecot ... Hi All I am experiencing a mail download problem with dovecot's pop3 protocol. We use outlook XP 2002 mail clients and I have setup a mail system with pop accounts on a Fedora 2 installation using dovecot. Some of the clients download email fine but others do not download email and also do not give any error messages. I have enabled the "verbose" options in the /etc/dovecot.conf and all the logged messages appear the same for those who get email and for those who don't. I listed the /var/spool/mail directory and can see mail in the accounts who do not seem to download. We are running an 80 - 90 user system. I have even tried IMAP on the clients with no success. There is nothing viable in the system log. I would appreciate it if you could help. Hello, I have a problem. I get the message 'Failed to create storage with data' I have 2 emailaccounts which are working perfect and that worked fine. But now I want to add another account and now it said 'Failed to create storage with data' What is the problem? I have the same rights on the directory and it worked first fine. I didn't changed it. I've spent most of the morning looking through the archives. Great information, however, I'm still unable to get my issues figured out. I believe I am missing something quite simple. From what I have read, I want to use maildir, mainly because it will allow the use of subfolders for my clients. My clients are running Mail.app (mostly) on 10.3 clients. I'm planning on using imap and my clients must be able to create sub folders to organize their email. I'm running into a couple problems. First, when I send an email to myself I see in the procmail log that it writes that message to: Folder: /Network/Servers/milhouse/Users/jpbuse/Maildir/new/msg.ZAgKB However, when I send a message to another user on the same server it writes the message to: Folder: /var/mail/someuser I don't understand why the home directory changed. I don't believe I have anything custom in my account vs anyone else. My second issue/question.. how do I get Mail.app and SquirrelMail to see the email now that is not no longer in ~/mail ? Home directories are in this format on the server: /home/users/j/jp/jpbuse Users are authenticated via LDAP and their home directory actually is: /Network/Servers/milhouse/Users/jpbuse I have a symlink that takes care of this and from what I can tell, works just fine. Changed the following line in /etc/dovecot.conf: default_mail_env = maildir:%h /etc/procmailrc looks like: # .procmailrc PATH=/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/local/bin MAILDIR=$HOME/Maildir DEFAULT=$MAILDIR/new PMDIR=/tmp/procmail LOGFILE=/var/log/procmail # Use SpamAssassin INCLUDERC=/etc/mail/spamassassin/spamassassin-spamc.rc dovecot-0.99 procmail-3.22 sendmail-8.13

In my mysql database everyone has plain passwords. I set the password don my account to {PLAIN-MD5}md5sum but when I go to login it wont let me. But I can log in with "{PLAIN-MD5}md5sum" it's like it ignores the whole {scheme} thing. So I changed my dovecot-mysql.conf to: default_pass_scheme = PLAIN-MD5 In the password field for my username I just used the md5sum. I stopped dovecot and killed all remaining processes and then started it. But it doesn't try to do md5 it is still doing plain text. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong? I looked and there are no compile time options that I need for this to work... Dovecot Version 0.99.13

Hello, I have got a problem ir dovecod.conf. I would like to use %d in default_mail_env = maildir:/var/mail/vhosts/%d/%u/Maildir but %d seems to be empty. I need it for Postfix virtual domains. If I use default_mail_env = maildir:/var/mail/vhosts/DOMAIN.ORG/%u/Maildir mail folders could be accessed. I wonder, where Postfix virtual domains need to be passed to Dovecot? more config info: auth_userdb = static uid=100 gid=100 home=/var/mail/vhosts/%d/%u auth_passdb = passwd-file /etc/dovecot/pass Thanks in advance, M.

Greetings. I was wondering if there were any plans to add support for an SSL certificate chain file? This is useful to provide a valid certificate chain for lower cost signing authorities. I'm afraid that I'm not 100% positive of the implementation requirements. Although it does seem that OpenSSL supports this concept. I am aware that Apache HTTPD (via mod_ssl) and Courier-IMAP offer support for this feature. [Dovecot] Crash and Assertion Error

I've attached two backtraces, one from a segfault and another from an assertion error in imap. I've seen a couple of the same assertion and this is the only segfault. It looks like they could be related. They both have to do with indexing anyway... The code is from CVS as of May 30. The segfault happened while imap was doing searches for my pine filters. I've also noticed that in pine, if I expunge a lot of mail that is spaced out through my mbox, it usually gets the headers mixed up. What I mean is that I will open one email and get the body from another. Just mentioning this in case it has some bearing. I'll be trying some things out to see if I can figure out why this happens. Can't think of any more useful info, I need sleep. Todd

Does anybody know of a script of a simple method of converting mbox mail stores to maildirs? I'm moving from an old pop3 system to imap and after installing about half our office with mboxes have found that mbox does not support subfolders which some people like to use. Is there any simple way of converting? I can go to each individual account and "manually" convert swaping data around with Firefox, but I was wondering if there was an easier way. [Dovecot] Filenames and flags

Hi, Does anyone know how the filnames as created and/or if you can read a mail's flag or status from it? 1 .As you can set i.e. "ToDo" label on a message and then if I open from another thunderbird I can see it is marked there aswell I wonder: Is this read from the filename or some registry? 2 .Can I understand from a filename if a message is read? 3. Sometimes when I try to filter with flags no messages show. Is this a thunderbird bug or a dovecot one, or one in conjunction? Best regards -Jon

[Dovecot] imaps tls/ssl and stupid clients

We have been using dovecot now as replacement for qpopper for over 2 weeks and it's working nicely. I have now tried to enable ssl/tls for myself and other inhouse users which also works fine. But the problem is that I use an uncertified certificate. Which is not a problem for kmail, as it just pops up a box asking whether I want to accept the certificate or not. But apparently, some stupid email programs used by other people just hang up on an uncertified certificate. I have figured out that ssl_disable = yes is the critical setting. If it's set everything works, if not, then all services allow tls/ssl and the stupid clients choke on it. Since others just use pop3 I wonder whether there is a way I can disable tls support for pop3 but enable it for imap or even only for imaps? Any ideas or am I starting from the wrong side? Hi Guys, I may have missed something in the conf file but while using a standard mysql auth method I'm finding many dovecot-auth processing sitting doing nothing. They grow to the extent that mysql runs out of connections after a week. Any ideas? Hi, I'm planing to move a big mail server currently under Dovecot 0.99 to Dovecot 1.0 stable. One problem I had once when doing this was that all the UIDL had to change and that all users using pop3 and leaving their messages on the server had to re-download all of them, which is annoying. I'd like to know to the UIDL really have to change when migrating from 0.99 to 1.0stable or if this was a configuration problem on my side. Are there any tips for this to be as transparent as possible for the users ? http://dovecot.org/test/ - vpopmail authentication fix - many mmap_disable=yes fixes and a few optimizations - pop3 hang fix - mbox fix for "last-uid lost" error (hopefully last one) - mbox fix for losing dirty flag, causing lost message flags mmap_disable=yes seems to be finally working pretty well. There should be no more cache file related errors with it enabled. I'm still seeing "UID inserted in the middle of mailbox" error a couple of times in hour (out of ~320000 logins/h), so mbox code is still not perfect but I'd think it's good enough for normal use :)

Situation: dovecot-stable-20050528 on x86, Linux 2.4.30, ext3, maildir I'm trying to use the imapsync utility (http://www.linux-france.org/prj/imapsync/) to copy 1500 messages from a UW-imap server to dovecot. Talk about personal problems! I am using dovecot-0.99.13-4.FC2, and everything has been going fine for months. Earlier this afternoon, Thunderbird's status pane would say 'Sending authenticate login information...' and I would no longer receive email. When I checked with others, they were fine and dandy. I tried kmail, evolution, and even tried webmail. All had connection errors. Checking the logs I can see the following: May 27 14:07:58 mongo imap-login: Login: mitchy [162.84.141.200] May 27 14:07:58 mongo imap(mitchy): getgroups() failed: Invalid argument May 27 14:07:58 mongo dovecot: child 3264 (imap) returned error 89 I can see new messages in $Maildir, so it is all about authentication, which I am completely clueless about as it has been working for as long as I have had this server. Hi, I've been running dovecot for awhile (about 18 months now) and I am very happy with it. I am currently planning an upgrade for the office server and I am wondering how is 1.0 going? Is it stable enough for production? I read a thread in the list from may 5th talking about the stability, and it seemed pretty decent. [Dovecot] IMAP Memory Error

Hi, I recently upgraded dovecot on an OpenBSD server from the 0.99.x series to the 1.0-test series to eliminate a problem. That was fixed, however I am now experiencing issues with IMAP(S) connections. The main IMAPS use to the server is via Squirrelmail (many users login with it), however I typically use Thunderbird. The user mailboxes are stored in Maildir format. Basically, moving, deleting or copying mails tends not to work. I have managed to move mails in Thunderbird if the source mailbox is small, and deleting mails usually works in Thunderbird. However, in Squirrelmail deleting or moving results in: "ERROR : Connection dropped by imap-server. Query: COPY 5629 "<dest-mailbox>" /var/log/maillog reports: May 24 23:19:03 orca dovecot: IMAP(jmcaree): pool_system_malloc(): Out of memory The Out of memory error appears when moving mails with Thunderbird, also. I had originally upgraded to dovecot1.0-test66 via a patch supplied by an OpenBSD porter. Today I decided to compile -test70 to see if it was any better. Unfortunately, this issue still exists. I tried upgrading Squirrelmail to the latest (1.4.4 from 1.4.3a), but no luck there. Since it's happening with both it and Thunderbird, though, I don't see it being a client issue. Server is: # uname -a OpenBSD my.hostname.com 3.7 GENERIC.RAID#0 amd64 I'd appreciate any assistance or advice on this issue! I am so confused. Can someone help me out here? I have set it up so that it is to accept login via PLAIN TEXT. I am using Thunderbird to connect, and it will ask for my password (the username is already in the system) I get a pop-up for Enter the password for Username on Domain.com I enter my password (the same I would use to login to FTP) and it fails. Hi, I'm having a hideous problem trying to get the latest stable version to work. I've had no success and simply can't pinpoint the problem. Sorry for the rather long email but I've included as many details as I can to help here. Hi, I'm in the process of migrating from local Maildir, to IMAP-enabled Maildir (terms are made up by me). I have my Maildir directories all under $HOME/Mail I have a procmail script that sorts everything into different folders under $HOME/Mail, and leaves the rest in a Maildir folder chosen by me, that I think of as my INBOX. Now, I am assuming that the folder I identify as INBOX is the one that a client will interpret as the INBOX? I really want the INBOX to be one of the folders under $HOME/Mail, but at the moment dovecot only will only consider the folder $HOME/Mail as the INBOX, so I have to send my 'inbox' mail to $HOME/Mail, rather than what I would prefer, which would be $HOME/Mail/INBOX (or something like that). The seting I have in dovecot.conf is: default_mail_env = maildir:~/Mail Is this is the only way, or am I doing something wrong? Should I be using default_mail_env to define the inbox? e.g. with: default_mail_env = maildir:~/Mail:INBOX=INBOX (or whatever my inbox mail folder name is) Maybe I've just got my Maildir folder set up completely wrong, and I'm supposed to accept the Maildir folder itself as the inbox? [Dovecot] Read-only mail folders

Is it possible to have folders on read-only partitions in Dovecot 1.0-stable? We have a NetApp fileserver which would probably be accessed via NFS (though iSCSI is possible) and which stores readonly "snapshots" of every directory accessible as .snapshot (but usually hidden from the operating system). It would be very nice to set up a "snapshot" namespace something like :- namespace public { separator = / prefix = "#snapshot/" location = maildir:%h/Maildir/.snapshot/nightly.0 hidden = yes } so that users could recover messages from say yesterday's version of their mailbox. Unfortunately, Dovecot always seems to want to write to the directory, even when indexes are stored elsewhere (as recommended with NFS anyway, I think) using INDEX=whatever in the location line. Hi all I just compiled Dovecot v1.0-test70 and i tried using the dovecot-example.conf for a quick test to see if the daemon would work. I am currently using Dovecot 0.99.14-r1 as provided by Gentoo, in a Qmail + VPopmail configuration. I am curious as to how to configure it to ensure the most stability, as it serves >1000 clients. I would rather disable any indexing that give small speed improvements if they are not known to be stable. Advice? [Dovecot] 1.0-stable loses flag changes sometimes?

I've been struggling with an odd bug in the latest 1.0-stable (20050427) release. Sometimes Dovecot seems to forget that a message has been read or deleted and marks it unread (or not deleted). As far as I've been able to determine, it seems to happen when 1) There have been several recent deliveries 2) Possibly some of those deliveries are of multiple messages 3) Possibly they are read very quickly (say only a second for each message) 4) Folder is an mbox (haven't tried Maildir) I've seen it with Thunderbird mostly, but did manage to recreate it once in "telnet" - the debug IMAP client ;) - using "IDLE" "FETCH" and "STORE msgid +FLAGS (\Seen)" commands. I managed to catch it in the act with one Thunderbird session, and it seemed to occur when Thunderbird, for some reason, issued an IMAP "CHECK" command. In this case it issued an extra "* 710 FETCH (FLAGS (\Recent))" response (the new messages had been msgid 711-715). Incidentally, Thunderbird seems to do a "STORE .. +FLAGS (\Seen)" command even though this is implicit the "FETCH .. BODY[..]" command (and it gets informed of the flag change in the response). I've tried and tried to find a "formula" for re-creating the problem "on demand", but it only goes wrong occassionaly. My guess is it's some sort of timing thing with mbox sync (BTW we have "mbox_dirty_syncs = yes" and "mbox_very_dirty_syncs = no"). Has anybody else seen this? I'm hoping to roll out this version to our wider group of testers soon and would like to get this issue solved first if possible (it counts as an annoyance rather than a serious problem). Hello, I'am Filip Cristian System Administrator at Astral Telecom and i'am using on our email servers dovecot for pop*, imap* auth with mysql suport. I have noticed that in the 1.0-test* release you have support for multiple password databases. From what i have tested this it's working but only if you want to fallback to another supported password databases different that the privios. Is there a posibility to use multiple mysql authentication ? I mean to use two or more mysql hosts on wich to connect and search for the username if the user it's not in the first database? Hi I'm have problems with dovecot and the php imap_open function. Can't seem to get it to work. I just get a "Aborted login [127.0.0.1]" in the dovecot logs. Hi all I have just finished installing / configuring my dovecot IMAP server. Im seeing something weird happing. It seems my Winblows Outlook users are experiencing a problem whereby when they delete an email, Outlook puts a line though the email, but the mail does not delete. Im not sure if this is a an outlook problem or a dovecot IMAP problem. I cant see anything in the conf file to suggest that it is a IMAP problem. i have recently rebuilt dovecot on my mail server as i wanted to add SSL support for it. well, my OpenSSL libs are 64-bit, so what they hey, i'll build dovecot 64-bit as well. worked just fine, no issues at all. the setup is: Solaris 9/SPARC Sun C compiler Dovecot 0.99.14 after rebuilding it 64-bit, i now have a small problem however. I cannot save messages to IMAP folders from Mail.app on OSX 10.3.9. I've been searching, and I can't find any rpms of dovecot stable for RHEL 4. Does anybody know where I can get one? Ever since we went from IMAP-UW to Dovecot, we've been having frequent problems with mbox corruption, and I've read that 1.0 fixes many of those types of problems. I'm new to Dovecot but I've been able to get it up and running on a test basis without too much difficulty. I'm running dovecot-stable-20050508 with maildir, under Linux (an old Gentoo setup that's been stable for about 2,5 years). Mail client is Thunderbird. However, in the course of experimentally copying the accumulated household email (95000 emails from the last 10 years) from the existing IMAP server (UW-IMAP) using imapsync, I'm seeing some problems. [Dovecot] new-attrib lost when calling through pop3

Hi, I noticed, that all messages are moved from new/ to cur/ (using maildirs) after the authentication in pop3, even before the list command. I'm working with 1.0-stable-20050426. Why is this done? Shouldn't a message keep it's new-attrib as long as it isn't retrieved? This is how it worked with qmail-pop3d. Through imap, it works correctly. It's just sad if I can't distinguish between older and new emails with imap, just because I logged in through pop3 shortly before. Regards Marten

Whenever I attempt to retrieve or delete mail (Using thunderbird win client) operation takes several minutes. right before completion posts the following error to maillog: May 14 10:22:04 NAPUtil imap(djrobert): Timeout while waiting for release of shared fcntl() lock for index file /home/djrobert/Maildir/.Trash/.imap.index deleting the index file speeds up the operation once. subsequent operations are slow again I don't know what other process is placing a lock on the file. or how to clear it. I am running the 9914p0 package distributed with a march 11 3.7 snapshot (OS loaded from the same snapshot). I previously was running the release 3.6 OS and the Dovecot package that came with the CD. both installs exhibit the same behavior. Both Dovecot and postfix are configured with fcntl locking only. [Dovecot] dovecot through NFS

Hello, as our mail server load increases every day, I plan to scale the single mailserver in differnt units: 1x big storage server for all mailboxes, folders exported through NFS 1x smtp for mail-in (queue local, messages on storage server) 1x pop3/imap to retrieve the messages (config local, messages on storage server) Since we're using maildir only, there's no problem to get the messages into the mailboxes. But what about dovecot for retrieving them? NFS will be v3. Is locking still a problem with it? Might the indexes get corrupt? Regards Marten

[Dovecot] Fedora Core 3 and Mail.app problems

Hello, first thanks for all the work, I appreciate the attention to security :-) I have a performance issue I am trying to solve. On my new server it would appear that synchronizing changes between the client and server is taking longer then my previous setup. I have recently upgraded from my old server to a new home (the basis for my comparison), From: - Redhat 9.0, uw-imap, using self-signed ssl certificates, on an old p-II. - Only one email user (me), about 40 mail folders with a few dozen messages in each. - Performance was never an issue, Mail.app took maybe 20 seconds to sync up minor deletes etc. To a new home: - Clean install of Fedora Core 3 on a p4, dovecot-0.99.13-3.FC3. - Copy of /home/gturner/mail directory to new server, ie existing mbox format from uw-imap. - Recreated new self-signed certificates on new server, manually added the self-signed certificates, connected with no problems. - Mail.app client, on OS X 10.3.9 (no Tiger yet). I deleted the account on Mail.app, and created it again, the first login/sync took a long time, which was expected. However after that, I noticed that when I first connect or delete a file the sync is slower then the old setup (FYI, I keep "Automatically synchronize changed mailboxes" checked on Mail.app). A result of this appears to be some corruption of some mailboxes, only one or two, nothing valuable. For example, I delete a file and then clear the trash while things are still syncing. So my current solution is to be patient. :-) Any suggestions? I know that I could covert everything over to maildir, but I would like some feedback to see if this would be reasonable. I also noticed that initially there are 3 'gturner imap' threads and the syncing seems to be flying along. Then the thread count goes to 5 or 6 and sync starts to crawl. I looked for a way to limit the number of spawned threads, but only saw stuff about 'waiting' threads or reference to 1.0. I have attached my dovecot.conf for reference. Any help is greatly appreciated, Gord Turner.

Hi all, I have a Dovecot server(dovecot-0.99.14) running with IMAP support, running on a Fedora 2 system. Outlook (2003) users receive duplicate mail, "the" second mail doesn't have a title, when clicking on it, we are getting "non fully downloaded" error message. When deleting the "orignal" mail, all duplicates gets deleted too. Any ideas? [Dovecot] problem with test69

Hi all, I noticed a problem with test69. I can recreate it with the following steps: - create a folder - copy about 200 emails from INBOX to this folder The copy succeeds, I can see with rawlog that it actually moves the 200 emails around. I can see on the spool that there are 200 emails. This is maildir, with spool over NFS. Now I immediately select the new folder. I now see only a part of the emails reported. And with rawlog I indeed see something like: * FLAGS (\Answered \Flagged \Deleted \Seen \Draft Junk) * OK [PERMANENTFLAGS (\Answered \Flagged \Deleted \Seen \Draft Junk \*)] Flags p ermitted. * 158 EXISTS * 158 RECENT * OK [UNSEEN 3] First unseen. * OK [UIDVALIDITY 1115970206] UIDs valid * OK [UIDNEXT 217] Predicted next UID 2 OK [READ-WRITE] Select completed. My client faithfully reports 158 instead of 200. If I now close/open my client, and re-select, I see 200. This I can reproduce with several different clients, but its pretty obvious it isnt a client issue. I also reproduced this with different users. Anyone see this also? NFS issue? Cor

[Dovecot] dovecot 1.0-test69 io hangs

I've been testing test69 with pop3 (under Linux and with mbox). I began testing with a large inbox (11000 mails) and it seems the communication between dovecot and the mailclient (evolution) stalls after 1000-2000 messages transferred. I've looked in to the (non-trivial) io functionality of dovecot. What I see is that io_loop_handler_run() in ioloop-poll.c does not signal any more data (and eventually the whole thing timeouts). Evolution downloads the mailbox fine via qpopper. I tried turning on rawlog: mail_executable = /usr/libexec/dovecot/rawlog /usr/libexec/dovecot/pop3 I cannot find any logfile.. I must be missing something. Any help or ideas ? Hello, After a long search I've almost settled on dovecot as a pop3 and imap server. I have just one problem.. Rather than have a list support(a)company.com, I'd like to have a shared mailbox. The dovecot homepage explicitly states "Shared mailboxes aren't _yet_ supported." The sentence implies that they're planned - any idea when? Thanks

[Dovecot] IDLE command timeout

Is it possible to change the IDLE command timeout to be more than 30 minutes? I have a client on my PalmOne Treo 600 which will stay in IDLE mode as long as it can. I would like to set the timeout to something much higher than 30 minutes. Maybe several hours or even more. I don't see a configuration setting for this value in "/etc/dovecot.conf". Its nothing special. Code is a bit sloppy as its a 5 minute bodge job, but it works. I use something similar to count number of logins. It was badly broken before. And somewhat off topic advertisement: I got a bit distracted from Dovecot a week ago when a guy started mailing me about wanting to write an irssi2 client as a project to learn Ruby. Half a year ago I had written a semi-working irssi2 server but I got stuck with it because I wasn't interested about writing client for it. Now that the client actually works, irssi2's development has kind of exploded :) Irssi2 is a bit related to Dovecot too, in that it'll be integrated with it more or less tightly to provide instant messaging support. Nothing prevents extending irssi2-protocol to support all other kinds of realtime events either, for example to send new mail notifications. If you're interested, see: http://main.irssi.org/projects/irssi2.html And for the lazy, here's the introduction copy&pasted: Shortly put, irssi2 is to instant messaging what IMAP is to mail. You can safely exit your irssi2 client, and irssi2 server just keeps on going. When you connect back with your client, you can see all the discussion that happened while you were away (and even older discussion, too, if you want). You can also use multiple clients even at the same time, so you could for example keep one client always open at home and still be able to check what's going on with your mobile phone. Irssi2 clients are encouraged to keep their configuration in server side, so nothing should prevent you from temporarily using another irssi2 client from your friend's home with no other configuration needed than irssi2 server's address, your username and password. Irssi2 is designed to support multiple chat protocols (IRC, SILC, MSN, ICQ, etc.) but without ignoring hardcore IRC users. That means that unlike all other similar attempts (such as Jabber), irssi2's client-server protocol will actually allow fully featured irssi2 IRC client to be written with no compromises (but still the same client can be used to talk to MSN and elsewhere). Note that irssi2 isn't trying to replace IRC servers (yet ;). irssi2 server simply connects to normal IRC servers just as a regular IRC client. To prevent mixups with these terms, IRC servers are usually called "gateways" in irssi2.

Hi all, I'm using Debian (testing) for my office mail. I'm using sendmail and Dovecot to deliver email to clients over IMAP using mbox format. I want to move over and start using Maildir. I know that I can use different MTA's to do the job, but I really like sendmail, and I run additional sendmail servers across the my internal and external networks. I'm probably being anal, but I want to keep my MTA the same across the board. Does anyone here use sendmail + dovecot + maildir? if so what's the best way of going about this? Gabe

Hi, thank to developers for such a flexible imap server. Is solves succesfully my needs to have a single passwd file for clients accessing both imap/imaps and pop3/pop3s protocols (on a diskless mail/web server with NFS maildirs and NFS indexes!). My question: With 1.0-test68 I have to set login_dir=/var/run/dovecot-login (just a dir not under /var/run/dovecot) instead of /var/run/dovecot/login. I guess that imap-login (running with uid=dovecot) can't access /var/run/dovecot/login if it is under /var/run/dovecot because it is set with permission 0700 and uid=root by dovecot. How can I run dovecot with its standard login_dir config? hi, it seems when dovecot use ldap user and password databases it's not possible to use tls connection and certificate with the ldap connection. wouldn't it be possible to use the same certificate on the ldap connection as used in the ssl_{cert,key}_file parameters in the dovecot conf (or would be possible to use it's own cert in the ldap conf file? yours. -- Levente "Si vis pacem para bellum!"

I'm trying Dovecot v1.0-test43 with ldap authentication but can't seem to make it work. I'm getting the following errors in the log: dovecot: Sep 16 19:50:09 Info: Dovecot v1.0-test43 starting up dovecot: Sep 16 19:50:10 Error: Auth process died too early - shutting down What can I do to see where the error is? I have this configuration working with dovecot 0.99.xx . And if I replace the ldap authentication scheme with another one it starts up right. Following some past mailing list sugestions I've also tried removing most of the auth modules from the compilation but it made no diference. hi, I am trying to set up dovecot with digest-md5 as authentication mechanism and openldap as passdb. My problem is ... that I just can't get it working. PLAIN authentication works as expected, but no luck with digest-md5. [Dovecot] transparent proxy

I'm excited to see that dovecot 1.0-test series supports transparent proxy, but that excitement is muted by: - the recommendation to avoid 1.0 at present; - the requirement to use SQL authentication. I guess I could ignore the first, but the second is sticky. How hard would it be to hack a different sort of proxy server cue into the authentication? Perhaps one of: If authenticating via passwd, use a gid as an index into a server table (or perhaps have the group name be a server name), If passwd authentication fails, try a starting the proxy to a specific other server and see if one can log in there. Or something else.. I dunno, I'm just looking not to install a SQL server just for this. mm

[Dovecot] index file corruption

Hello everyone. I am new to the list, so forgive me if this has been discussed already. My configuration is as follows: Fedora Core 3, fully patched through yum through today. Dovecot 0.9.9.13 Postfix 2.1.5 Using Maildir with Mail stored in ~/Maildir My issue is that, for some odd reason the inbox file index gets corrupt, There is no rhyme or reason as to why it happens or when, but a simple rm -rf ~/Maildir/.INBOX fixes everything (I assume because Dovecot rebuilds the index file.) Has anyone else on the list seen this? Is there some workaround for it? Andy

Hello, I just decided to try dovecot again after a long pause, and I must say that I am very impressed with the speed and resource usage, even when running with UNIX mailboxes. However, I have a problem with SSL. Every two minutes the connection is frozen, and the client has to reconnect after it times out waiting for a response from the server. My IMAP client fetches all headers, and then caches all messages in my mailboxes. However, if I do this while connected to dovecot using SSL (imaps, port 993) the connection times out roughly every two minutes, and the IMAP client must close the connection, reconnect and resume operations from where it left off. This makes resynching a 40000 message 300MB folder take VERY long :-) Using the same client, connected to the same server and syncing the same mailbox connecting to regular imap port (no TLS, port 143), everything works smoothly. The very same client, server and mailbox works flawlessly with uw-imapd and SSL. I have turned on rawlog, and everything seems to be OK. I am unable to dump the wire, because it's SSL, so not sure what to do to debug this. One thing I find a bit strange is that /var/run/dovecot/ssl-parameters.dat is a 0 byte file. Is this normal? [Dovecot] pop vs. imap inconsistancy

I am converting from courier and have noticed change in behaviour with Dovecot. I use maildirs with squirrelmail connecting by imap as well as a POP3 client. Courier would set the 'mail status-read' flag for any message which was downloaded with the POP3 interface. Dovecot apparently does not. Is this a bug or intended behaviour? If it is intentional, can it be changed with the config file?

[Dovecot] Outlook Duplicates issue is still killing me

Hi, I have one pop3 client who has three computers, and he has Outlook XP on two, and 2003 on the third. They are all set to leave a copy of messages on the server, and that causes a duplicate message for every message he gets. I then can tell him to uncheck the "leave a copy on the server" box, and pop his mail, and the duplicates will go away for two or three days, only to start up again. I have a stock Fedora Core 2 server with dovecot and Sendmail. I do a nightly yum, so as to stay up2date. My version of dovecot is 1.0-test42. Has anyone else seen this issue? What can I do to fix it, short of permanently unchecking that box in Outlook? Hello List, I am in the process of building a new mail system here. I am hoping to eventually migrate my users from mbox storage to maildir. They have been using mbox forever and would rather get used to maildir slowly. So I have come upon the idea of using namespaces to provide the different mailstores. Since this isn't available in the current stable, or at least I could not figure out how to do it, I have been working with 1.0-test68 since it provides the ability to configure things with the namespaces. [Dovecot] test-68 coredump

I've tried upgrading from test-51 to test-68, with mixed results. It seems to fix the problem I had with imap and Thunderbird getting confused and not showing headers or body for some email. But something in dovecot is coredumping when I select certain mailboxes. Thunderbird just hangs when you select that mailbox, and mutt gets an EOF on the imap socket while "fetching message headers". Other mailboxes seem to run OK. The failing ones _might_ be empty or have only 1 message in them. Removing index files doesn't help. There is a core file in /var/run/dovecot, and file(1) says it's from dovecot-auth, but GDB can't make sense of the core with that executable, and the login has well and truly run when the core happens. (The core doesn't seem to be from the imap process either.) Any clues how I might debug this? [Solaris 2.8, gcc-3.3, dovecot test-68, imap+Maildir, Thunderbird 1.0.2 on OSX and mutt on Solaris]

Hello, if you log in at hotmail.com, gmx, lycos or yahoo, you can see something like "using 1.4mb of 250mb total". Is there any IMAP command to check to current quota usage? Our webmail-interface will not have access to the filesystem to summarize the size of each file, so an IMAP-command would be great. I don't know if this would be a new feature or just part of the Maildir++ quota-system, that is not yet supported by dovecot. Regards Marten

Hello Gang, I am new to dovecot and the only reason (so far) I would like to use dovecot, and in production with 12k+ users, is the fact that it's supposed to be faster and less of a resource hog. Now, sometimes I am really good at reading the documentations but it sometimes happens that one overlooks something. I did read the migration notes three times! My users are in /etc/passwd and I am running dovecot in IMAP only mode. I did put default_mail_env = maildir:~/Maildir in dovecot.conf, then for one user, I did the following: cd ~wash/Maildir cp courierimapsubscribed .subscriptions # Then I edited to remove "INBOX." cp courierimapuiddb dovecot-uidlist The permissions are right, but when I login as this user, I don't see all the folders that had been there before when he was using courier-imap!! When I login to the web interface (we use Squirrelmail) and go to the Folder options, I can't see any folders to subscribe to either! Now my questions: 1. What am I overlooking?? 2. Does someone have a script that can be used to automate the copying of courierimapsubscribed to .subscriptions and that of courierimapuiddb to dovecot-uidlist, and the editing to remove the "INBOX."? I am sure I really don't have to reinvent the wheel, no? Meanwhile I am hitting google, while waiting for your answers. Frankly, I lack the information to check if some client is using keywords at all. More importantly, is it OK to assume that when SELECT INBOX returns no \* in OK [PERMANENTFLAGS ...] that the IMAP server does not allow keywords at all? We have NFS-mounted user directories which cause significant problems with stale file handles: dovecot: IMAP(uid): fstat() failed with file /home/uid/mail/.imap/INBOX/dovecot.index.log: Stale NFS file handle (a) why can't it just close the file and re-open ? (b) is there a way to specify with the 'default_mail_env' (or in some other way) the location of **only** the indexes (and let dovecot autodetect all else?). I have already tried 'mmap_disable = yes', but that does not solve the problem, and if I set 'default_mail_env = INDEX=/var/spool/mail/INDEX/%u', I get errors like: IMAP(uid): Failed to create storage with data: INDEX=/var/spool/mail/INDEX/uid I don't want to specify mbox:~/mail/ or mbox:~/Mail/, because some users have one and some the other.

I am converting from courier and have noticed change in behaviour with Dovecot. I use maildirs with squirrelmail connecting by imap as well as a POP3 client. Courier would set the 'mail status-read' flag for any message which was downloaded with the POP3 interface. Dovecot apparently does not. Is this a bug or intended behaviour? If it is intentional, can it be changed with the config file?

As of now I have configured it on the respective clients using the same username and password so we have multiple people accessing the same account through their mail clients simultaneously and it is working flawlessly. My dovecot server seems to randomly begin giving errors to pop3 users who try to fetch their email. Once this begins, they see no more new mail, though the mail is in cur. Hello, I'm interested in trying the dovecot-lda with sieve support. What would be the proper way to test it? I'm currently using a Fedore core 2 server, with spamassassin and procmail. To get the same effect with dovecot-lda, would I put a line like this in my .forward? spamassassin|dovecot-lda I'm just guessing, so please correct me if im wrong. Hello, I recently had the problem, that an index was corrupt. Thus, messages haven't been listed (talking about POP3), but still remained in the filesystem. As there is no SEARCH-command in POP3, dovecot didn't notice that the index is corrupt and didn't rebuild it. The problem is, that a user can't delete messages through POP3 which aren't listed by dovecot. If the maildir size increases, the arrival of new messages will be blocked because the mailbox is full. And the user has no chance to delete it. Regards Marten

Hello, we use dovecot on a regular basis. Sometimes I end up with a user telling me he does not get mail. When I look after the problem, I always find leading blank lines in the mbox file. We are using postfix with dovecot and amavisd as spam scanner. Amavisd never accesses the mbox files directly so this can be ruled out. I suspected procmail but now it happened also with accounts where no procmail is active. I found only a list thread where this happened always, i.e. it was a configuration error. (Meaning the mailbox was correct but dovecot would not read it). Here ist is only occasionally and therefore hard to track . Does anybody have the same problem or has hints to a solution ? We are running postfix 2.1.4 and dc 0.99.10.6 ; just now I am upgrading to pf 2.2.2. and dc 0.99.14. Yours, Jakob Curdes

Working on an RH9 box. Did not use yum. Downloaded the "dovecot-stable-latest.tar.gz". Uncompressed it, downloaded and installed gcc. Ran the following: ./configure make sudo make install Seemed to have done its thing. I'll admit I am not well versed in using "make" or compiling anything. When I install I usually use yum on fedora machines. This one being an RH9 machine I have plugged yum into the fedora legacy project and it did not let me install dovecot via yum. So I opted for this route. Regardless, if I run 'which dovecot' I see "/usr/local/sbin/dovecot" However now I do not seem to be able to see it run. I get nothing when I: rpm -qa | grep dovecot ps aux | grep dovecot service dovecot status SO AM HAVE MISSED SOMETHING! Is there another script I need to run? Suggestions welcome. Thanks, George

[Dovecot] dovecot 0.99.xx to 1.0-stable how-to?

I realize that there have been some big changes in features and configuration file settings between 0.99.xx and 1.0-stable, so when I went to perform an upgrade on our testing server, I carefully combed through the configuration files and matched up everything I could. I fired up dovecot-1.0-stable and was pleased to see that it was happily running. I attempted to connect to it, and discovered that it wasn't listening to any ports.. then I realized that the app had crashed due to a typo in the config file (oops). Fixed that, started it up, and it was happily running and listening. However, it wouldn't authenticate any users.. Backing down to the 0.99.14 version that we had installed allowed for authentication (against ldap) to work just fine.. Is there anything that I should be looking for within the dovecot-1.0-stable that is dramatically different in regards to user authentication? -Rich

Hello, I am migrating one server to dovecot. The only problem is, that users have logins with @domain as part of their user name. I want to use pam auth (for other reasons, if only for dovecot, I would use mysql, but I need the same password db to be used for other services, like samba). Is there a way to allow this type of login? Just cut everything beginning with @. I can change the source code, but then I don't get nice automatic upgrades. Or can this be done easily with PAM? [Dovecot] Shared mailboxes and accessing MailDir not through IMAP

Hello, I'm testing Dovecot that is part of Debian/sarge (v0.99.14-1). So far so good. I have migrated some mailboxes for testing with success and seems that everything works fine. One thing I do not figure out is, what to do about shared mailboxes, which are the very reason of searching for an alternative IMAP server, The Wiki states that there is some sort of shared mailboxes, based upon symlinks. Well, but since which version actually?? The Changelog stops at 2003-11-08 21:12 ? What I need is a mailbox (maildir) for a contact address (not a real shared mailbox, but several users shall be able to read a mail and delete it after processing). For this, one needs write permission to the mails therein only, the MDA takes care of to make the mails readable for the group. It would be good to see, if somebody had answered a mail already, but that's not required. What I tried is this: I setup all Unix-permissions of the folders (. cur new tmp: u=rwx,g=srwx) and their parents (u=rwx,g=x). Then I placed a symlink into the maildir of all users. Each user caches the INDEXes into an individual /var/ directory, not in the maildirs themselves. (BTW: I wonder why I need to give the group write permission to the base directory '.'). The mailbox shows up and is read-write. Now I wonder, what impact I'm to expect here? Esp. "The only problem is that currently everyone's message flags would be shared as well." (quote from a message of a thread taken from the Wiki) Then there is http://dovecot.org/pipermail/dovecot/2003-March/001113.html the third item will apply to my situation, I guess. MailDir is (sort of) expected to be read by mutt directly, for instance. Because the mailboxes are located within the users home directories, some of them do this. Do this item mean that Dovecot is NOT expecting that mails are deleted in any other way than through itself? Otherwise Dovecot would find a change in the mailbox and rebuilt the index file regardless whether the change had been originated by another IMAP client or by directly manipulating the maildir. I'm redesigning our mail server which holds several hundred mailboxes - most are local system users and some are virtual domains that we host. I understand that the 1.0x stable release allows for multiple auth mechinisms, so that I could use both PAM for local users and a passwd-file for the virtuals. If I want to stick with 0.99x can I mix and match in a single passwd-file the username/passwd for both local and virtual users? Greetings Running Fedora Core 3 and dovecot-0.99.13-3.FC3 as a production mail server for around 30+ accounts. A couple of times a day dovecot just stops. Nothing in the mail log except for Apr 26 00:48:19 sydsrv05 imap-login: Can't connect to auth process at default: Connection refused It's got to the point that I have put a script into cron.hourly to restart the dovecot service every hour. Any suggestions where to start looking please? First off I've just got to say thanks. We just upgraded from UW to Dovecot migrating from mbox to maildir. Wow, what a difference! Load average used to hang around 5.0 during business hours and could get up to 20+ on a bad day. Now we rarely break 1.0! I'm wondering if there's a way to keep track of the last time a user checked their email and whether they checked it using POP or IMAP. We're trying to gather statistics on what protocols our users use and find accounts that haven't been checked for a long time. We used to be able to do some of this with the finger command and the user's mbox. I found a script called "mfinger" that works better with Maildir, but it's designed for Courier. Any ideas? Thanks!

[Dovecot] Why is "UIDVALIDITY changed" fatal?

I've got several users testing Dovecot IMAP at the moment, but some of them are also accessing their mail via UW-IMAP at other times. (I've warned them about accessing the same folder simultaneously via UW-IMAP and Dovecot!) In addition, we have special folders "AutoSpam" and "Trash" that pruned using Washington's "mailutil" automatically every so often. Of course, Dovecot's indexes will become invalid in such cases, but they seem to get rebuilt automatically OK. However, in some cases UW-IMAP seems to change the UIDVALIDITY value (not sure why!) and when Dovecot tries to sync it notices this and gives up with a fatal error on opening that folder. Opening the folder a second time is then OK. I was wondering why Dovecot can't just rebuild the indexes silently in such cases (which seems to be done by returning "0" from the mbox_sync_loop() routine)? Hi, I've been struggling with getting dovecot up and running the last hour, but I seem to be stuck. Hi Perhaps I've been going too far OT in my previous thread or perhaps I just didn't explain my problem clear enough so forgive me for trying again. I have configured fetchmail to fetch my mail from my ISP's POP3-server. hi, i'd like to use dovecot to authenticate from ldap. in ldap each user has it's uniq uid and gid. unfortunately with postfix we can't use uniq uid/gid since in this case we have ot create all user's home in advance. so we decided to use uniq uid and a common gid in postfix since in this case postfix can create new users maildir and deliver new mails. so i'd like to use everyone's own uid in dovecot, but a common gid (same as in postfix). but how can i do so? i read the wiki, but the problem is if i use: auth_userdb = ldap /etc/dovecot-ldap.conf then i have to define ldap attrib name in dovecot-ldap.conf: user_attrs = mail,,,uid,uidNumber,gidNumber what should i use in the last field in user_attrs? or it's not possible with dovecot to define this? i'd be very said in this case:-( any advice? thanks in advance. yours. -- Levente "Si vis pacem para bellum!"

Hello, I'd really like to define the finale libexecdir and localstatedir through the configure-script. But the Makefiles are rewriting them. Not $libexecdir is used, but $pkglibexecdir. And $pkglibexecdir is always defined as $libexecdir/dovecot. But I don't want this trailing "/dovecot". Same with localstatedir. I want dovecot to use a certain path. But to this path, a "run/dovecot" is appended. I surely could build some patchfiles to change the Makefiles. But it would be easier, if you could add a new directive --pgklibexecdir to the configure-script. I don't know where the "run/dovecot" is defined, but it would also be very fine to set it in the configure-script (specially when upgrading to new releases) instead of defining them all in the dovecot.conf (base_dir, login_dir). Changes: - LDAP authentication should work finally? - Some header lookup fixes that should fix sort/threading issues - Don't crash with 0-byte size mboxes - Transaction log fixes. Also rotate .log file to .log.2 file, allowing more history and less "transaction log file lost" messages. - SEARCHing multiple headers might have crashed - mbox: When first message was expunged we might have gotten "uid-last unexpectedly lost" errors. - recent flag counter wasn't updated in index file header always even if the recent flags were removed - UIDVALIDITY changes are handled more transparently - Added --rundir configure option (not actually tested, does it work? :) - etc.

Hi, surely it can't and it shouldn't. I'm just wondering why a check for "INBOX" is done in src/imap/cmd-delete.c AND src/lib-storage/index/maildir/maildir-storage.c. The first is clear because it gives an imap-error to the client. But for which case is the check in maildir-sorage.c? Just to be absolutely sure? The reason for me to ask is, because I need to disable deletions for five folders: Drafts, Infected, Junk, Sent and Trash. A certain webmail-interface and spamfilter will rely on these folders, so nobody shall be able to delete or rename them. First I placed the checks in cmd-delete.c. Should I place them in maildir-storage.c additionally? In normal circumstance, the check in maildir-storage.c should never be reached, right? Regards Marten

I'm mainly just curious, but what version of dovecot is considered to be stable enough to be running in a production environment? We're running the 0.99.13 version shipped with FC3 and, while experiencing great performance gains over UW-IMAP, we have hit a couple of snags here and there (random and infrequent characters at the beginning of a mailbox, periodic duplication of a message here and there, etc). I figure we should upgrade to something a bit more current, but I am not sure what the "recommended" verion would be.. Also, perhaps more important, what's the roadmap to getting 1.0 finalized? What's the timeframe? :-) -Rich

With the API changes committed today to CVS, it's now much easier to write plugins that modify mail-storage behavior. So, I finally fixed my half-working quota plugin that had been lying there for a while. It implements the RFC2087 quota commands for IMAP, a generic quota API that should allow pretty much any kind of quota implementation, and the actual quota limit checking for saving and copying mails. As an example there's an implementation which just scans through all files in a directory and sums their sizes. Currently it can be made to work only when starting from command line, eg.: export QUOTA=~/mail:storage=1024 export MODULE_DIR=/usr/local/lib/dovecot/imap ./imap The QUOTA variable is passed to the quota implementation. In this case quota-dirsize reads it, figures out that ~/mail is the directory where to count the files, and 1024kB is the maximum for quota. I think I'll change the master process code so that any unrecognized varibles that come from userdb are fed to imap/pop3 processes. That way you could simply make the userdb return the quota value (and set other user-specific settings as well). Maybe the core implementation should be built into Dovecot, while the different quota implementations would be plugins? ..And even better would be if Dovecot's build process was modified so that it's possible to specify with configure script what to compile in and what to compile as plugins.. [Dovecot] File isn't in mbox format - Couldn't open INBOX

While I saw another thread on the list similar to the issue I was experiencing (http://dovecot.org/pipermail/dovecot/2005-February/006168.html) I was wondering if there was a way around this problem (the thread simply suggested upgrading, but are the later version (specifically the 1.0-test releases) ready for prime time?)... We're periodically having this with some users (not sure what client they are using, but I am pretty sure it is MS Outlook) where the inbox is in near perfect shape except for some extra characters at the beginning of the file. POP or IMAP delivery fails with an error stating "File isn't in mbox format - Couldn't open INBOX". It looks like those characters are of a previous message that was not completely removed from the file, and those characters seem to throw everything out of wack.. It's easily correctable by removing the bogus characters from the beginning of the file, but that gets annoying quickly.. -Rich

Hi I would like to set up a local mailserver but I'm getting lost with all the available options. As I have already decided to use dovecot I hope someone here will be able to point me to the right docs/HOWTO's/... Here's my wish-list: 1) download mail from my ISP's POP3-server 2) scan with spamassassin 3) scan with ClamAV 4) filter messages (mailing lists/sender/...) 5) store messages in dovecot 6) be able to read messages on my desktop (where all of the above will be running) and on my laptop 7) be able to send messages (currently using evolution) from both my desktop and laptop so sent messages are stored in dovecot (the idea is to be able to see all sent messages on both PC's) I have already created a test-account om my ISP's POP3-server, installed and configured fetchmail and dovecot. Exim has been installed as well but I haven't touched it's configuration yet. Running fetchmail manually collects the mail and stores it in /var/mail/m8ram where dovecot finds it. So I would like to know (how to find out) how I can achieve 2), 3), 4) and 7). I have looked around and have discovered that there are many programs that can do some or all of this. But I haven't been able to figure out how to get them to work with dovecot. e.g. I don't understand what I would have to change to dovecot's config if exim or procmail or whatever moves certain messages to different folders (or even where these folders would be created). Perhaps I'm missing a HOWTO that explains all this, if so please let me know. Well, I just built and installed the 1.0 stable w/o tags version from source, and so far, it's not hanging/crashing the system - if this is the fix, I'm all over it :D Context: this is my problem: Correction: I'm running yum.log:03/07/05 05:48:28 Updated: dovecot 0.99.14-1.1.fc2.rf.i386 - Sorry about that. I'm a bit befuddled by this behavior. I've been using dovecot for close to a year, and recently the Fedora Core 2 Update: dovecot-0.99.13-4.FC2 build came in via yum. Since then I occasionally get this EXPUNGE disconnect error. When the error hits, the box does not crash but I can no longer log in*, nor start any new processes. I happen to have gkrellm running and I see a slow but steady climb in the # of processess. The only way to recover the box is to do a hard reset, as I cannot log in, nor su - to do a shutdown. In one case I happened to have a root shell open, and I still could not do a shutdown. Any ideas as to what I should do with this? As long as I don't expung everything is fine, but when I do expunge (move something or a filter runs in squirrelmail, or Action/Expunge in Evolution) sometimes it works fine, sometimes I get this error and a weird zombie state. It was all rock solid before this new version. Suggestions welcome - I don't seem to be getting any logging when it goes bad, perhaps I can up the log level? I'm more then happy to build the current dovecot from source, and if I should post this to some Fedora list, point me at it :D

I also placed dovecot-lda-0.1.tar.gz in http://dovecot.org/test/. It's also in dovecot-lda module in CVS. It's based on the same deliver binary that exists in Dovecot's sources, but I've also plugged in CMU Sieve (mostly because it was the easiest one to plug in). The code could be much prettier, but it works anyway :) I think at some point I'm going to try to make the Sieve stuff a plugin on top of the normal delivery binary. (Dovecot in general should have some pretty plugin architecture, so you could just unpack them in some directory then do ./configure --with-builtin-plugins=quota-maildir,lda-sieve --with-external-plugins=sql,ldap,quota-sql) configure needs --with-dovecot=../dovecot-1.0-test68 option. So, usage goes like I mentioned in my previous mail (uhm. should put it into README): http://dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2005-March/006512.html Sieve script is assumed to be in ~/.dovecot.sieve file. It's automatically compiled to ~/.dovecot.sievec whenever timestamp changes. If it doesn't exist, mail is stored normally into INBOX.

Hi! Have anyone successed with hp-ux (how) ? I've compiled 0.99.14 with gcc-3.4.3 at hpux 11.11. I can telnet to port 143 and connection stays up, but I don't get any response back. It seems like dovecot "doesn't see" what I type in telnet. Hello Timo, your patch introducing pass_attr_names and user_attr_names fixed the problem of the 'shared' attr_names member of [passdb|userdb]_ldap_conn as I answered in the relative thread. Now I think there is a problem while comparing user-provided and ldap-provided passwords causing a false 'password mismatch' situation, while using PLAIN mechanism with LDAP authentication. As a matter of fact, the user provided by the user, as read in the 'mech_plain_auth_continue' function is passed as an argument in the 'auth_request_verify_plain' function which, in turns pass it to the function pointed to by 'passdb->verify_plain' (that is 'ldap_verify_plain') which doesn't use it [instead maybe of setting the 'passdb_ldap_request' 'password' field with it ?]. So once back from the LDAP request, when in 'handle_request' we call 'password_verify', the password we try to match against the one read in the LDAP db is null. Did I get it right ? So I now am able to log into dovecot, authenticate but I can't see anything. Every command after login says NO error or the really cryptic just plain 'NO' I am authenticating through vpopmail and the mail users are in /home/vpopmail the dir is owned vpopmail:vchkpw and are drwx------ do I need to change something there? Hello, I'm a bit afraid of users, the might slow down the server because of search requests to the imap-server on very large mailboxes. Even with a performant index, this could cause a lot of cpu and i/o-load. Is it possible to include the login-name in the imap process, so that a "ps ax" doesn't just give "imap", but e.g. "imap test(a)example.com"? Maybe it's of general interest to see in the title at which stage an imap-process is working. Regards Marten

[Dovecot] creating subfolders without preceding inbox wanted?

Hello, today I accidentally created a subfolder "Trash" instead of INBOX.Trash. No error was given, the creation lead to the folder ".Trash". If I know this folder, I can also select it. But a "list * * " doesn't show the Trash folder. How could I ever find this folder by the imap-procotol if I don't know it's name? Is this the correct behaviour? Or shouldn't imap simply disallow the creation of such folders, but only with preceding "INBOX."? Regards Marten

Hi, With some POP3 servers, when you login more than once, the POP3 server says "Err: multiple login". How can I achieve that with dovecot ? [Dovecot] message status changed from new to old on read

Hi. I'm new to IMAP, but just tried uw-imapd and then dovecot in conjuction with offlineimap. I'm using Debian package version 0.99.14-1 and have my mail in mbox format. One of the first things that annoys me about both programs is that as soon as you read a mailbox over imap, the imapd changes all "new" messages to "old". It seems to have the assumption that the IMAP client is "reading" the messages, but particularly in the case of offlineimap, this assumption is not justified: I might not read the message on the client on which I've just synced, I might read it on the server or another client. So I would like dovecot to leave the mailbox alone, and leave it up to the client to write any changes to message status. Is there any option to dovecot that would accomplish this? While experimenting, I noticed that dovecot sometimes doesn't notice changes to the status made directly on the server. For example, if I create new mbox mailbox with one message (initially "new"), and access it with imap (using mutt in this example), it shows up "new" in the client. When I next access it with imap, it shows up "old", because dovecot modified the status as described above. If I then run mutt directly on the mailbox and change the status back to "new", then access it with imap, it still shows up "old". If I then remove the .imap directory containing the caches, it is back to "new". I assume that dovecot is supposed to pick up changes made directly on the server, right? Thanks for your help, Andrew

Hello, I'm using dovecot-0.99.14, and I wonder if anyone has created patch for *minimal* Maildir++ support. By minimal Maildir++ support, I mean the following: (1) New messages created by dovecot will include the ,S=nnnnn string in the unique identifier so that Maildir++ clients don't have to stat the file to know the size. (2) Dovecot will append to the maildirsize file when a message is deleted or added. If maildirsize gets larger than the 5120 limit, then just delete it and let someone else recalculate the quota. My goal isn't full Maildir++ support in dovecot, but just to make it play nicely with my Maildir++ aware delivery agent. (If someone has full Maildir++ support, I'd be glad for that too!) If what I describe above doesn't exist, I am interested in paying someone to make this quick patch. E-mail me off list if you are interested. Thanks, David

[Dovecot] dovecot ssl problem

Hi there, I am having a weird problem with dovecot and ssl. If I am accessing the dovecot imap server with for example sylpheed-claws or evolution, everything works fine. If it is accessed via windows either by outlook or thunderbird, we get occassional timeouts. It's working fine for a few hours, then for 5 to 20 minutes, every attempt to connect from the outside results in "Connection to server timed out". Added to that, the problem only arises, if a direct SSL connection to Port 993 is used. Using Sylpheed with STARTTLS to Port 143 from the outside works fine as well. It's not a firewall Problem, since port 993 and 143 are open, the config files have been checked over and over for 2 weeks and are good as well. Dovecot log says: imap-login: Apr 20 13:26:05 Warning: SSL_read() syscall failed: Connection timed out [83.104.224.142] Doing uber verbose output doesn't bring up any extended information, syslog stays clean as well. The Problem is not directly reproducable by a certain action, it just arises from time to time. There can be 3 working days without problems, or 6 timeouts > 20 minutes within one day. System is Debian Sarge unstable with a custom 2.6.10 Kernel. During the timeouts, mail is still received and put into the users mailboxes by exim, it's just that you cannot access the imap server for approx 20 minutes. [Dovecot] SORT using cached filesystem modtimes

Timo or anyone, This may be a bug or maybe a design decision. Either way I am curious to hear comments. Why do the dovecot-0.99.14 server's .imap.index files contain a cached copy of each message's date and time as supplied by the filesystem, as opposed to the date and time found in each message header? When testing various imap clients (eg. tbird-1.0.2, evolution-2.0, outlook2003, squirrelmail-1.4.4) I was intrigued by the behaviour of message date sorting. I toggled on/off the use of server side SORTing in some imap clients, then started forcing rebuilds of .map.index files, and eventually came to the above conclusion. For normal dovecot server side processing, this condition (if I am correct) may not be a problem, but if someone was to deposit a bunch of maildir files firstly into an imap account (bypassing dovecot), and if this person (eg. me) did not preserve the filesystem/inode file attributes. Then dovecot appears to cache the "wrong" data. What happens then is that some imap clients can display wrong date+times in the message lists, and some imap clients find that server side SORTing does not work. [Dovecot] Dovecot causing hanging on random folders...

I've been using the 1.0 test series (currently 1.0test 67 and before that 1.0-test59) and both exhibited this issue.. I use Thunderbird and will open one or two of my nested Maildir folders via imap and find that it goes out there trying to open the folder (according to the messages that Thunderbird claims) and it never comes back.. I've attached to the various dovecot processes to see what their doing and they appear to be waiting for things to do -- e.g. not working on anything in particular.. The only way to fix this is to quit Thunderbird and restart it.. I see this about 2-3 times a day.. I'd love to track it down.. I've seen this on Fedora Core 1 (i386 server) and also on a PPC Linux system running an older kernel (on a Buffalo Linkstation if you know what that is).. Hi, i'm using dovecot-1.0-stable. All my mail accounts are virtual accounts that come from pam with the following configuration in auth_default: passdb = pam userdb = static uid=5000 gid=5000 home=/var/mail/vhost/example.com/%n mail=/var/mail/vhost/example.com/%n for a user foo, if the directory /var/mail/vhost/example.com/foo already exists, then all is ok, but if the directory doesn't exists, it seems dovecot is unable to create it "on the fly". I get the following error message: Failed to create storage with data: /var/mail/vhost/example.com/foo i'm quite sure it is not a permission related problem (i made /var/mail/vhost/example.com world writable to be sure). I'm currently trying to understand the maildir code... But could someone tell me if the maildir directory should exist for dovecot to work ? In the case that the answer is yes, i would say in advance that it's a problem for sites hosting a lot of virtual users, since it means that these users must receive at least one mail for their mail account to work correctly (i use postfix as MTA, and if the user's maildir doesn't exist, postfix takes care of creating it). I'm not very fond of solutions with scripts taking care of creating users. Hi dovecot-0.99.11-1.FC3.4.i386.rpm on FC3 when i create a user account with pop3 email i find that if i don't send and email to the account (so that sendmail creates the file under /var/spool/mail/testuser) where "testuser" is the users username. If the user logs in with Outlook or Outlook express they get an error and maillog shows. I am using dovecot 0.99.13 and Evolution 2.0.2 on Fedora Core 3. [Dovecot] Upcoming configuration file changes

For those who might be interested. Comments welcome. A few weeks ago I had started redesigning how Dovecot handles configuration files. I wrote a new parser and converted dovecot-auth to use the new way. Today I finally managed to convert imap process as well, which wasn't that easy because I didn't want mbox/maildir-specific settings to be hardcoded in any common code. So, the changes will be: - Dovecot master process will need a new completely different configuration file which tells what processes to run and their uids/chroots/memory limits. Very much like Postfix's master.cf. I'm not sure about its format yet (suggestions welcome), but maybe something like it's already: process imap-login { executable = /usr/lib/dovecot/imap-login chroot = /var/run/dovecot/login uid = dovecot vsz_limit = 32M } ... Hopefully after these changes the master process will become very small and simple. - One of the processes will be a configuration process, which is the one that reads and parses the configuration for non-master processes. The default configuration file format will be pretty similar to what we have now, but it can of course be replaced with SQL backends and whatever. Config process will listen in some unix socket waiting for requests from other processes, which connect to it just after they start up and maybe also sometimes later (eg. to get user/IP-specific settings when a new client connects). - The data that config process sends and what other processes parse is based on simple key=value pairs, so it's possible to still store and parse them from environment if needed. Also it makes it possible to override settings from command line (eg. imap -o mail_debug=yes) or give user-specific settings in userdb. Here's an example: # config process reads something like: mmap_disable = yes namespace foo { type = private separator = / mbox { dir = ~/mail mbox_read_locks = dotlock } } # sends out: mmap_disable = yes namespaces = foo namespaces_foo_type = private namespaces_foo_separator = / namespaces_foo_mbox = 1 namespaces_foo_mbox_1_dir = ~/mail namespaces_foo_mbox_1_mbox_read_locks = dotlock - Config process should verify that all given settings are valid so that typos are noticed. This may not be that easy because the setting definitions are distributed all around the source code. I think there needs to be at least a (Perl) script that finds out all the setting definitions and writes them to some all-settings.c for config process so it knows them. Settings for plugins are more difficult though.. Should they somehow be marked in config file that they're plugins (plugin foo { .. })? Or maybe config process could dynamically load all the plugins itself and request their setting definitions?

[Dovecot] comparision with other imap servers and folder sharing

Some praise: Timo, I must say I am super impressed with this product. I do free support a few good friends with small businesses running Linux servers (a mix of RH9, Suse9.2 and gentoo) that I dropped as email and samba servers. I found UW-IMAP to be terrible in every way except that using mbox is sometimes nice for old s/w tools. No need for details re UW-IMAP problems. In early 2004 I found courier-imap to be vastly better behaved than UW-IMAP and also much faster once large folders were open. DJB's Maildirs seemed cool, and postfix likes them too, and mb2md-3.20.pl worked great . So everything seemed good and certainly was better. But courier cannot cope with large imap accounts (eg. millions of messages and a few GBytes) where courier-imap grinds to a halt on the initial folder scanning. Cyrus just looks like a big evil beast that needs too much time to learn. Four days ago, this lead me to dovecot. The performance, reliability, configurability of dovecot is amazing. Timo, I think you could give yourself more credit on something important when selling Dovecot. You write that Dovecot "does not support shared folders". This might turn away some people considering Dovecot. People whom like me do not have/want a good understanding of the imap protocol. I believe you mean that Dovecot does not support shared folders in the technical imap sense of shared namespaces between separate imap accounts. Since Dovecot works beautifully when sharing folders via logging in with the same username more than once. Plus your documentation and config notes imply that this is no problem. How can I configure the dovecot for working with maildir's through NFS? hi, anyone of you pls guide me what entries to put in nsswitch.conf for pam to work with krberse, i'm trying to authenticate users from AD, I thinks (my findings) pam.d/dovecot looks into /etc/nsswitch.conf for which passwd databases to use while authenticating a users. my krb setup is working fine I tested with "kinit username" and it authenticat to AD server. As 'passdb_ldap_conn' and 'userdb_ldap_conn' are of the 'ldap_connection' type and since the 'db_ldap_init' function returns the existing ldap connection if it exists, the 'passdb_ldap_preinit' and 'usedb_ldap_preinit' will call the 'db_ldap_set_attrs' function on _the same_ 'ldap_connection' object. - So when the 'db_ldap_search' function is called from the 'passdb-ldap.c:ldap_lookup_pass function, the 5th argument (passdb_ldap_conn->attr_names) will point to the 'user_attrs' instead of the 'pass_attrs', since userdb_preinit will have already been called. - I've also noticed the use of the 'attr_map' hash to store the attribute/value pairs, but since it doesn't seems to be used when calling 'ldap_lookup_pass', I guess the problem is somewhere else. Can someone give me a clue ? At what level does Dovecot log to syslog? UW-IMAP uses local6.debug to log to syslog, but it doesn't seem that dovecot does the same.. (the file I defined for UW-IMAP's output hasn't received anything since I moved over to Dovecot? Also, has anyone managed to get LogWatch and Dovecot to play nicely together? I noticed that LogWatch no longer gives any statistics on the imap usage since I shut down UW and went full blast with Dovecot.. -Rich

[Dovecot] Index(?) problem under OpenBSD

Hi, My apologies if this has been mentioned before, I haven't pulled up a google search yet. I run Dovecot from the package under OpenBSD 3.6 (dovecot-0.99.10.8). The problem I have is that occasionally dovecot corrupts an index file (I think), which causes the process to gradually creep up in usage, until it hits 99%, where it stays, without quitting. If I then fire up my mail client later on, it does the same thing. Doing this two or three times results in 3 processes, all at 33%, and a load of 100 on the server. The problem is resolved by deleting all the index files in my Maildir. If this doesn't solve the problem, then duplicating my Maildir and using the new copy, after deleting all the index files, fixes the problem. But these only work for a while, and the problem rears it's head with other users as well, so I need a fix. Has anybody else suffered this problem? Is there a fix in a more recent version? Is it OpenBSD specific? What can I do to help diagnose the problem? Should I turn of indexes? Upgrade to the latest version? [Dovecot] Namespace prefix not ending with separator

I'm still battling my way through using hidden namespaces to hide the change from UW-IMAP to Dovecot 1.0-stable from my users. The latest problem is that some (probably many) users have their IMAP folder prefix set to "~/mail" rather than "~/mail/". I have hidden namespaces with prefixes "~/mail/", "~%u/mail/" and "mail/". LIST "~/mail" "*" returns nothing, so I've tried adding another namespace for "~/mail". Now LIST "~/mail" "*" returns * LIST (\NoInferiors \UnMarked) "/" "~/mailtest1/test1-2" * LIST (\NoInferiors \UnMarked) "/" "~/mailtest2" * LIST (\NoInferiors \UnMarked) "/" "~/mailtest3" whereas UW-IMAP returns * LIST (\NoInferiors \UnMarked) "/" ~/mail/test1/test1-2 * LIST (\NoInferiors \UnMarked) "/" ~/mail/test2 * LIST (\NoInferiors \UnMarked) "/" ~/mail/test3 I wonder whether LIST should insert an extra namespace separator in such cases? [Dovecot] imap segfault in mail-index-sync.c

Our support team seems to have caused another crash. They treat this mailbox like a shared one, so there may be a few people accessing it at once. They are mostly using dovecot, but some could be using uw-imap. These are the only two ways that this box is accessed. I know that this doesn't really work with mbox, but it doesn't appear to corrupt the mailbox. It seems to be a good stress test... In this case, it looks like several of them are logged in at once. [Dovecot] Authentication and the wrong mailbox?

I just migrated from UW-imap to dovecot last night. After some tweaking of the dovecot.conf file, disabling xinetd's entries, firing up the dovecot daemon, and copying the .mailboxlist to .subscriptions for all users, things looked to be going just fine! I received a call this morning from a user stating that they had all of *my* emails in *their* inbox! They don't know when it happened as their machine POP's email off every 5-10 minutes or so, but we were able to isolate it to a 8hr period last night. Further investigation showed that at some time through the evening, dovecot freaked out during the authentication phase and for some bizzare reason, when the user connected via POP3, they were able to download all of my inbox! Additionally, by the time I was looking in to it, NO users could authenticate via dovecot, and, hence, no one had access to email. Restarting dovecot resolved the issue, but I have my doubts about it being truly resolved. I'm going to run some tests (what little I can think of), but this is the first time I have ever experienced a situation such as this. One thing for UW is that this situation never happened, and I've only had dovecot running for about 13hrs. I was trying to configure postfix, mysql with dovecot.
