I was going to experiment with ACLs when I faced a small problem. It is just sufficient to enable the acl plugin for getting the behavior described hereafter. A workaround is to create the corresponding system user and group; launchd then doesn't complain anymore and everything seems to be working fine. But I feel somewhat uncomfortable with that... Wouldn't it be possible, for example, to consider using a system user such as "nobody" (unless I'm wrong, it should be defined on any unix flavor)? [Dovecot] No folders listed in felamimail

Egroupware 1.4.004 I thought I try and solve a long standing bug we've had with felamimail not listing folders from our dovecot server. Watching dovecot's packet dumps I'm seeing dovecot do a namespace call and the a list call. Felamimail does a namespace and gets back * NAMESPACE (("" "/")) NIL NIL which is how I've configured dovecot to keep the client configuration very simple. Now Felamimail does a LIST "" "" which gets no folders returned and is obviously why it won't show anything in the felamimail display. I was expecting felamimail to do something more like: LIST "" "%" or LIST "" "*" Is there something I need to configure to make felamimail happy with our dovecot configuration? We use dovecot with outlook express, thunderbird (1,2,3), Mozilla, squirrelmail, iPod, iPhone and symbian with no issues so I'm tending towards felamimail being the source of the problem. Jon.

[Dovecot] SSL / TLS

I am running Postfix and Dovecot on my mail server. I am required now to have SSL/TLS on my mail server. I did check and found out that I have a SSL certificate with Verisign issued to my mail servers FQDN. Now my question is when reading the Dovecot Wiki, I noticed it said that it is not common to use SSL but rather TLS on most mail servers. Even though SSL will work, which should I use on my server? We already have a purchased SSL certificate but does that really matter? Should I simply just revoke that certificate & use TLS instead? So when I read this link: http://wiki.dovecot.org/SSL/DovecotConfiguration Is it talking about a actual SSL certificate or TLS? Thanks for any clarification! - Carlos

[Dovecot] Users with large (4GB) inboxes crippling dovecot

Hi all, I'm new here and would very much appreciate any help you can give me. We are running a rather outdated mail server that until recently has been running beautifully. Under the pretense of "it is ain't broke, don't fix it" it hasn't been updated so is running Fedora Core 4 and dovecot v0.99.14. What is happening is that as users log in (via thunderbird), they are shown the contents of their mailboxes. However, when they try and access a given email, they get no response even if they wait upwards of 10 minutes. I believe that the problem has arisen from their huge inboxes, several users have inboxes in excess of 4GB. Do any of you know how I could split these large mbox files down in to manageable chunks of 1GB? Please be aware that I only have remote access to the server over a modest internet connection. Hi, is there a recommended groupware (email + calendar + address book + syncing with mobile devices) on top of an existing dovecot installation? Most existing commercially supported groupwares come with their own mail storage engine. I would like to keep dovecot as the email storage engine because of the maildir format which greatly helps with backup & restore. Regards -- Robert Sander

Hello, I'm using dovecot and I want to use the "expire" plugin. However, it doesn't work, i.e. mails do not get deleted. I ran `/usr/sbin/dovecot --exec-mail ext /usr/libexec/dovecot/expire-tool --test` and besides printing Info: stef/Trash: no messages left Info: stef/Spam: no messages left it doesn't do anything (especially not deleting e-mails). Obviously, in stef/Trash and stef/Spam, there are e-mails waiting to be deleted. I'm using dbox as mail storage; and use dbox:/var/mail/%u as mail_location in dovecot.conf. Furthermore, I'm running 1.1.16 on a gentoo PPC system. Hi, The LDAP Plugin fails to build (it doesn't attempt to build it) in 1.2.rc7 because $have_ldap_plugin is checked before it's assigned in configure.in. Patch attached. This was not a problem in 1.2.rc6 and earlier versions. Cheers, Paul.

We are running a Red Hat Enterprise Linux environment with Dovecot IIMAP, Exim and mySQL 5.0.81, Apache 2.2.11 We are looking for several server side scripts: 1. Create a user account automatically at the completion of our registration process. i.e. username(a)ourdomain.com and existing MD5 password that is associated with his/her user account 2. Add a new user to an existing subscriber email whitelist (add buddy function) 3. Add an existing user to an existing subscriber email blacklist (block buddy function) Our preference is to receive access to a publicly available scripts. Alternatively, to come to a commercial arrangement with a party who has written or who is prepared to write the same. [Dovecot] sievec error: "fileinto require missing"

I'm getting this error when compiling .dovecot.sieve: $ /usr/libexec/dovecot/sievec .dovecot.sieve .dovecot.sievec Info: line 3: fileinto require missing Unable to parse script: script errors: line 3: fileinto require missing .dovecot.sieve just looks like this: $ cat .dovecot.sieve if header :contains ["List-Id"] ["dovecot.dovecot.org"] { fileinto "INBOX.dovecot"; stop; } I'm probably doing something silly; but I don't see how what I've done differs significantly from examples I've found. Hi, I compressed many files using bzip2, but in some cases it crashes. I believe that it is related to dovecot indexes. How to reproduce: Inside a Maildir folder without any indexes yet, compress a message with bzip2 and tryes to access it. Hello! I´m running dovecot 1.1.7 (which is the most recent binary of openSuSE 11.1 repository) with Postfix, MySQL and Postfixadmin. Now I´m trying for some days to get quota working, but I get some strange behaviour and I was not yet able to figure out where the error in my configuration is. Quota information is inserted by postfixadmin into a MySQL database. It seems that dovecot is reading this information correctly - when a mailbox is filled up and gets over-quota, further emails are rejected. But then, if I want to increase the quota for this filled-up mailbox in postfixadmin, postfixadmin correctly changes the quota information in MySQL table. After growing quota, mails to the account are accepted again. But my Thunderbird with Quota plugin continues showing the old quota setting. When more mails are sent to this account, it shows a quota > 100%. If I look into the "mailboxsize" file of this account, it still shows the old quota value before I raised it. If I delete the entry in mailboxsize, dovecot writes the old value in again. Seems that dovecot isn´t looking in the MySQL table (but it did after creating the account). But why are mails accepted again if dovecot is not recognizing the raised quota?? If I try now, as a user, to delete mails from the "overfilled" Inbox, it is denied with a "quota exceeded" message. But I´m able to send further mails to this account. The only way to get the account working properly again is to delete the messages directly on the server´s filesystem. [Dovecot] POP3 flag updates

Why does Dovecot add \Seen flag for mails that have been RETRed? Does anyone really want to use this feature? I can't remember why I implemented it originally, perhaps it was just "because other servers do that too". I'm thinking about at least changing pop3_no_flag_updates=yes to be default. There's also of course pop3_enable_last setting to enable LAST command which was removed from POP3 specs. That requires knowing the last RETRed mail, so I guess I should add a check that it can't be enabled without pop3_no_flag_updates=no.

Dear Timo, Would there be any sense in giving Dovecot the option to split folders into multiple subfolders when they reached a specified size (probably message count) limit? Dovecot would monitor folders and when they reached, say, 10,000 messages, silently split the folder on the filesystem to ensure that access remains fast. I know that Dovecot scales very well but this would give practically unlimited storage capability and also keep things fast. You could even have it so that the latest 100 messages are kept in their own folder for fast access. .Folder.new .Folder.cur .Folder.tmp could become: .Folder__1.new .Folder__1.cur .Folder__1.tmp and .Folder__2.new .Folder__2.cur .Folder__2.tmp with Dovecot merging them before display as just "Folder" within the mail client. This could be further extended so that Dovecot could be configured to store 'old' message folders in a separate location. We could then have slower+cheaper+larger storage mounted so that 'old mail' does not take up the expensive local SCSI disks on the machine. Mail from 2 years ago is much less likely to be accessed than mail from the last week. This would provide very neat behind-the-scenes archiving functionality. [Dovecot] Sieve/ManageSieve integration into pkgsrc

I'm integrating Sieve (the new one) and ManageSieve into wip/dovecot. Currently, this works as dovecot options because dovecot must be built before sieve can be configured and sieve must be built before managesieve can be configured/built. Now, the question arose what the long-term solution (in pkgsrc) should be. To my understanding, with dovecot 2.0, ManageSieve will no longer need to patch dovecot. But what about both Sieve and ManageSieve depending on doevcot sources in order to build (or on libraries dovecot only builds internally)? The preferred way (for pkgsrc) would be if both Sieve and ManageSieve could be built as stand-alone packages and not needing a dovecot source tree to build. What's the long-term plan for Sieve/ManageSieve in this respect? The pkgsrc infrastructure (intentionally) doesn't like a package depending on anothers package working directory in order to build. So with these cross-dependencies, the only pkgsrc ways to go would be either to build it all as one package with options (that's what I currently do) or extract, patch, configure and build dovecot inside a sieve package.

Hello folks, Time ago I worked on a patch for dovecot to work with vmailmgr http://mij.oltrelinux.com/net/dovecot-qmail-vmailmgr/ The patch was required because, despite vmailmgr complies with the checkpassword interface supported by dovecot, dovecot snips the mailbox directory returned by the authentication module at colon characters ':'. Incidentally, vmailmgr maps any "name.surname@domain" to "~domain/users/name:surname" (a standard practice in the qmail world, see eg http://www.qmail.org/man/man5/dot-qmail.html at "For security") This path dovecot would then parse as "~domain/users/name". An authentication module can't do anything about it, as this is due to dovecot collecting accounting information in one common buffer, tokenized by ':' separators. I soon stopped updating the patch because I didn't see much point in running indefinitely after releases. However, a bunch of people wrote me over the last years asking for details or updates. Partially for having a similar requirement myself, partially drafted by such feedback, I recently wrote a "compromise" wrapper solution (attached). It does not require patching dovecot (external module) and it's thus (supposedly) durable across dovecot releases; however, it cannot help with the colon problem. The wrapper works as follows: 1) compile and install: # cc -O2 -Wall -o checkvpw-dovecot-wrapper checkvpw-dovecot-wrapper.c # install -s -o root checkvpw-dovecot-wrapper /usr/local/bin 2) edit dovecot.conf, setup the auth section as follows: ============ auth default { mechanism = plain passdb checkpassword { args = /usr/local/bin/checkvpw-dovecot-wrapper } userdb prefetch { } user = root } ============ If "name.surname@domain" wants to be created, the administrator shall instead create the user "namesurname@domain" and an alias "name.surname@domain" pointing to it. This may be conceivable for new installations, but it is not for scenarios where dovecot is to replace another server on top of an existing user base. Of course, it's very desirable to support "." users too. I see that it would require several changes in the code, but I'd like to hear your opinion on this. What about - using a different separator than ":", less common and safer. Could '\0' be one? If not, what about '*'? - as a quicker & dirtier solution, what about allowing escaping? One can modify the auth module to replace ":" with "\:", if dovecot is instructed to avoid tokenizing when a "\" precedes a ":". - as an alternative, dovecot may require the module to chdir() to the mailbox directory instead of returning its path as a string, and subsequently operate locally on mailbox-relative paths. I can't guess how compatible this is with the current design. In the next days, I will publish such wrapper to the webpage. For your convenience, I will invite interested users to show up on this thread; this should help you in assessing how this is interesting for people. bye

So with only 3 POP3 users, why should so many login processes be spawned? I can understand 10-15. But 100 definitely indicates either the processes are not dying or something else happening on the system which is causing such high number of login processes. Hi, I've just upgraded our dovecot installation from 1.0.15 to 1.1.13. This went smoothly and just worked -- thank you very much for writing such a high performance and robust piece of software. However, we have a shared mailbox that people can subscribe to. After upgrading to 1.1.13 ... dovecot tries to create a dovecot-acl-list file in the top level of this ... but it creates it chown'd to the first logged in user with a umask of -rw- --- --- A. -rw------- 1 userA shared 17179 2009-06-25 11:10 /home/imapshared/SharedMaildir/dovecot-acl-list Everyone else who tried to access the shared folder (and hence dovecot tried to read / update the dovecot-acl-list file) caused an error to be logged to the error.log I changed the permissions (once I realised what had gone wrong) to match those on the dovecot-shared file and all was well as everyone can now read/update it. B. -rw-rw---- 1 imapshared shared 17179 2009-06-25 11:19 /home/imapshared/SharedMaildir/dovecot-acl-list -rw-rw---- 1 imapshared shared 0 2008-04-25 13:20 /home/imapshared/SharedMaildir/dovecot-shared Also from time to time the permissions seem to get changed back on dovecot-acl-list inexplicably to those in situation A -- usually following a restart of dovecot but I haven't been able to reproduce this reliably. This seems like a bug to me ... do you agree / is there a sensible work-around? The declaration in dovecot.conf for the shared namespace sets user specific CONTROL and INDEX locations so that users can independently subscribe to folders and mark messages as read on an individual basis. That is not right, no matter what. There is definitely some issue. Once the load increases the system will start timing out on POP3 connections or other network connections, such as IMAP, SSH etc. Better check out the system logs, utilization etc. for any abnormal values. Today I upgraded to version 1.1.16 of Dovecot (and Sieve), because I wanted to use mailbox quotas. I tried using the instructions on http://wiki.dovecot.org/Quota/1.1 and simular websites for 4 hours now, but it seems that all quota_rules are ignored. Also, whenever I use a '*' in my MySQL query I get the error: 'unknown quota backend'. [Dovecot] deliver does not update maildirsize

Hello, I have installed postfix 2.5.1 + dovecot 1.0.13 + MySQL and it all works perfectly. I use deliver as the local delivery agent and use IMAP only with maildir mailboxes. I am using virtual mailboxes. Now I wanted to introduce quotas, but I can't manage to make them work. Quota information is retreived from MySQL in userdb requests. I have noticed that the maildirsize file is not updated by deliver when a new mail comes in. I don't know if this is correct or not... It is updated though when I log in. But even then mails are still received without any kind of problem while the mailbox is well over the quota. I tried to add a "-v" option to deliver in postfix's master.cf to debug deliver, but it apparently does not like this option. Please find below my postfix and dovecot's configurations. Every 2 or 3 days dovecot will not allow me to log into my IMAP server. It keeps requesting my username and password. If I do a /etc/init.d/dovecot restart it will start working again for a few days. I have dovecot set up to use Maildir. Hello, Some users subscribe to several mailing lists which causes them to have the same message several times what they do not want . Hi all, I just set up a dovecot+postfix+roundcubemail+spamassassin system with virtual users. These applications work fine, I have a problem with the dovecot-antispam plugin. Dovecot is compiled from tarball, version 1.1.16, the plugin is version 1.2. The problem is that when I move messages from or to "Posta indesiderata", which is in antispam_spam list, nothing happens. I have no logs about sa-learn activity in /var/log/maillog, nor in /var/log messages, no matter if I set DEBUG=syslog or DEBUG=stderr. There is apparently still one rare crashing bug in virtual plugin, but unless someone can reproduce the bug I'm not going to delay v1.2.0 because of it. The release plan is: - Release v1.2.rc7 next Friday (assuming there have been some fixes) - Release v1.2.0 the next Monday I'll be giving a Dovecot talk in Berlin on July 2nd, and I really want to have v1.2.0 released by them. So July 1st is the absolute final deadline for v1.2.0. :) Changes since rc5: * imap proxy: Pass through to client unexpected untagged replies from remote server (e.g. alerts). * Solr: Don't use "any" copyfield, it doubles the index size. * mail_location: Allow using ":" characters in dir names by escaping it as "::". - mbox: Don't crash with invalid From_-lines. - IMAP: Don't crash if IDLE command is pipelined after a long-running UID FETCH or UID SEARCH. - ACL / shared mailbox fixes - Some metadata files were incorrectly getting 0666 permissions.

I have a question about migration from courier-imap. I have a server running courier-imap which I'd like to change to dovecot. The problem at hand is that there are POP3 users as well as IMAP4 users.Some of the POP3 users have the option to "leave a copy of the message on the server" set in their MuAs. Hi, I've just started using Dovecot (v1.1.14), and I'm noticing a lot of dictionary attacks. I searched through the documentation and the mailing list archives hoping to find support for tcp_wrappers (hosts.deny) support. I did find some suggested patches in the list from last year, but as far as I can tell, there is no support in the released versions. Is this implemented and undocumented, or just unimplemented? I would be surprised to find it unimplemented in such an otherwise sophisticated project. Thanks in advance, --Bill

[Dovecot] A X-Mailbox header?

Hi all, I'm waiting for the virtual mailbox feature in order to make a single POP3 access to retrieve messages contained in all my mailbox folders. This is because I use webmail and other IMAP clients but my main workstation uses a POP3-only client. I was wondering if there's a way to keep the name of the folder containing each message while retrieving via POP3. I guess this could be done by dynamically adding a header to messages at retrieval time. Is there a feature for this or a plugin API? Otherwise I was thinking about modifying the messages themselves on the server using a script. However, such a script would need to be run when a IMAP user moves a message to a folder and I believe Dovecot doesn't provide a trigger/hook mechanism. I also don't know if modifying stored messages is allowed since it could break some caching/hashing mechanism. Do you have any idea for this? [Dovecot] CRAM-MD5 authentication but plain-md5 password storage.

Hi all, Got a question on configuring dovecot, I'm still new at this so I might be doing this all wrong. I want dovecot to authenticate the mail client using CRAM-MD5 so I've setup the config in dovecot.conf: auth default { mechanisms = cram-md5 passdb sql { # Path for SQL configuration file, see doc/dovecot-sql-example.conf args = /etc/dovecot/dovecot-sql.conf } <snipped> } In my dovecot-sql.conf I've setup the password scheme to be: default_pass_scheme = MD5 Somehow this does not work, the error I see in the logfile is: auth-worker(default): password(info(a)richard5.tld,127.0.0.1): Requested CRAM-MD5 scheme, but we have only MD5 Is there a way to get this working or does this feature only works with passwords stored in plain text ? Hi all Deduplicating data is not really a new thing, but quite efficient in mail systems where an email with an nMB attachment may be sent to multiple recipients. This might call for deduplicating data. Is there a way to do this, or is it far off? If I understand the system correctly, usually an MTA is calling dovecot on every single message, meaning the message itself won't necessarily be a duplicate in terms of headers (BCCs and so on). Would it be possible to dedup the content in terms of using separate files for the header and content and then deduping this with hard or symbolic links? There had been a suggestion of a special user-shared namespace a while back. How about to add the base location in the shared-mailboxes.db? So instead of "1" the value is the base of the shared location, e.g. maildir:/local/testuser or maildir:/home/user/Maildir..., and some %%? token takes the string from there. Because the path is known from the db now, the other problems mentioned above do no longer apply. [Dovecot] auth_cache multiple passwords ?

Hi, First, thanks Timo and Stefan for this great IMAP/Sieve implementation... We are using 1.1.16+cmu_sieve/managesieve additions for now (following releases since ~ 1.0.1). We have a specific problem here with auth-cache: We use direct imap/sieve connection from different clients, using LDAP password: everything is fine. The problem appears with our webmail access using a web-SSO system (jasig's CAS), using one-time-tickets as password for imap connections (checked by pam_cas module for now). For a single webmail connection par login, it work, thanks to cache_key using client's IP. But for multiple use of the same login in the webmail, there are more than one 'password' valid at a time… What may be the 'correct' solution: - patching auth-cache.c (auth_cache_lookup function ?) - writing a different login backend ? - ??? The maildirs are migrated from a previous courier server. I've tried searching the archives and can't find anything related to this error. Could someone shed some light on it? [Dovecot] dovecot and ntp: Fatal: Time just moved backwards

Hallo, I am running dovecot on a PC (a workstation) to have a mail client independent storage for my mails. Now I would like to have the system clock set correctly by using ntpd or ntpdate (using debian/sid). The problem is, that the PC is not online at boot time, but is set online on demand manually using "pon" to start the pppd later. So ntpd cannot sync the time on boot time before dovecot gets started. First I was using ntpdate that was started in ppp's if.up.d/ directory. This tool does set the time very hard instead of just slightly shifting some milliseconds. So dovecot did stop itself, reporting: "Fatal: Time just moved backwards by 118 seconds. This might cause a lot of problems, so I'll just kill myself now." So I have tried ntpd as I thought it shifts the time in smaller time deltas. But this takes much time (several seconds) when booting, giving up on all configured servers, because they are not reachable when booting (as going online later manually). This turns off ntp functionality because ntpd does think that all servers are unreachable for ever. (I have tried a command "dynamic" in ntp.conf but this did not change anything and ntpd reports it to be obsolete.) My idea now is to not start ntpd on system boot, but only on if-up. But this brings up the same fatal error of dovecot as ntpd seems to hardly set the time, too. The only idea I have left is to stop dovecot, start ntpd and then start dovecot again on if-up. Is there a more elegant way to use dovecot and ntpd on a manually dialed in PC? Thanks, Arno

Hi. I'm trying to cross compile dovecot. My desktop machine is an AMD64 box with bells and whistles. The ARM based machine is a network attached storage box. When I run "make" always get x86_64 binaries. My OS is Gentoo, so I have been able to build using emerge a variety of other programs from source. What am I doing wrong here. [Dovecot] 1.1.16 stops authenticating users after several days

Hello, we use dovecot v1.1.16 on two servers with Solaris 9. This week both suddenly stopped authenticating users. The first server was startet on Jun 2 and ran until Jun 18 and the other startet on Jun 3 and failed on Jun 15. Hi all, ok, downloaded dovecot-1.2.rc5 and compiled it with no problem. Then, I went to compile the latest dovecot-1.2-sieve-0.1.5 with it, and got the following error : mail-raw.c: In function 'mail_raw_init': mail-raw.c:119: error: 'NAMESPACE_FLAG_INTERNAL' undeclared (first use in this function) mail-raw.c:119: error: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once mail-raw.c:119: error: for each function it appears in.) *** Error code 1 In looking around, I noticed in a changed log dated last month, that the NAMESPACE_FLAG_INTERNAL was moved to be two separate flags "_NOQUOTA and _NOACL"... But I think that the author of dovecot-1.2-sieve-0.1.5 hasn't made the change to handle that... So, first of all, I guess I would just like to bring it to the authors attention if it hasn't been already, and second, what is the last rc version before that change so I can actually get things to compile? Hallo. Sorry for may bad english. I'm running dovecot 1.0.15 on a debian lenny system. I've set quota plugin and, under section plugin, I've set: quota = maildir quota_rule = *:storage=50M quota_rule2 = Trash:storage=10%% quota_warning = storage=95%% /usr/local/bin/quota-warning.sh 95 quota_warning2 = storage=80%% /usr/local/bin/quota-warning.sh 80. For some accounts the quota limit works well. When I send mail I receive a rejected mail for quota exceeded. For some other accounts it doesn'work despite they have passed the 50M storage limit. Why?

Hello. I'm install latest dovecot 1.2 from hg repo. I have many messages in maildir+ format. I migrate some folders to dbxo format using instructions from http://wiki.dovecot.org/MailboxFormat/dbox. But in two folders i'm delete index.cache and index.log files, this is my mistake. Is that possible to recover this files (regenerate) or use my messages from maildir with dbox? [Dovecot] Question about "target is inferior" type of message

We're converting UW-IMAP users here to dovecot. Some of them have seen the error message issued when Thunderbird clients try to delete folders and I understand what's going on (from previous postings) that Dovecot doesn't support mbox subfolders within folders. What puzzles me is that many of these users already have folders within folders (I've found typically 2 levels of nested folders within their main Mail directory). And they're not complaining that they can't read the messages in those folders. If UW-IMAP supposedly never supported this for mbox format, and Dovecot doesn't support it, how is this possible under Dovecot? (We don't have any maildir format mailboxes here at all).

Hi List, on my mailserver (exim4, dovecot 1.0.0, postgresql, ubuntu dapper, about 500 users) I record an enourmous amount of disc writes (up to 18000 blocks written each second) in the time where most of users are active. This IO activity causes wait-states on the disc interface (RAID5) and finally slows down my mailmachine. Is there a explanation for these disc writes respectively is there a possibility to minimize this activity. Stopping Dovecot on this machine causes stopping most of the disc activity. Hi Timo, after changing the mail_executable in the imap {…} section I have to restart Dovecot v1.2.rc5, otherwise the changes are not accepted. I've copying messages automatically to sent folder if it sent via our SMTP. Problem is Deliver can't mark message as read on deliver. Does that possible to accomplish using global sieve rule? Hi, I have an issue with the authentication cache. When a user changes his password, the cache doesn't seem to get flushed. Meaning the user is unable to log in to his IMAP account after changing his password. Flow: - Log into IMAP account using pass1 - Approved - Stored in auth cache - Change password to pass2 in MySQL - Log into IMAP account using pass2 - Access is denied - Restart dovecot - Log into IMAP account using pass2 - Approved I'd really like to continue to use the auth cache, is there any solution to the above? perhaps a way to debug the cache and auth process? I wasn't able to activate auth_debug without restarting Dovecot and solving the problem. Using version 1.1.1, MySQL userdb, with "nopassword=Y". Maybe it's due to nopassword? Thanks -- Tom

Hi, I am running Dovecot on Linux Debian with Exim4 with a number multiple domains. I have a new user who want to use a single username with more than one domain eg: test(a)domainone.com test(a)domaintwo.com test(a)domainthree.com Exim is working fine with mail correctly with mail going to /home/domainone.com/test/Maildir/new/ /home/domaintwo.com/test/Maildir/new/ /home/domainthree.com/test/Maildir/new/ The Dovecot password files are in /home/domainone.com/etc/passwd.dovecot /home/domaintwo.com/etc/passwd.dovecot /home/domainthree.com/etc/passwd.dovecot When trying to retrieve email using Dovecot for test(a)domaintwo.com the password is not recognised although it is for test(a)domainone.com. Hello everyone. I'm new to dovecot and I'm setting up a server for one domain only. I have not yet decided whether I will be using one uid per user or one uid for all of them. What are the steps for correctly setting up shared folders with acls if I choose one uid per user? What advantages or disadvantages has setting one uid for all users vs one uid per user, considering I wish to setup shared folders (including security, performance, etc) ? [Dovecot] Multiple mail locations for a single user

Hi, I use offlineimap to cache my remote IMAP mail for my multiple accounts (personal, work, etc) to several maildirs locally. At the moment in my mail client I'm using Dovecot to access one of the maildirs via IMAP, and then direct maildir access for the others. This is suboptimal however because my clients direct maildir support isn't great. Is there any way to let me access all three maildirs through dovecot? I'm guessing that I can do this with namespaces but I'm not sure. Any suggestions and pointers? [Dovecot] IMP reading entire mailbox

We have been noticing a constant hum of traffic between our IMAP server (Dovecot v1.1.14) and our filers over the past several days. I have narrowed it down to one particular user who has been logged in to IMP/Horde since the problem began (he hadn't logged since we upgraded to Dovecot a week before). IMP is periodically checking this user's mail every five minutes. Each time it does, the his entire mailbox is being read. I initially thought it might be an indexing problem since I am also seeing messages such as this in the logs: Corrupted index cache file /local/data/dovecot/indexes/mail/X/XXXXXXXX/.imap/delivery.log/dovecot.index.cache: Broken MIME parts for mail UID 30880 But the in/out bytes being logged by Dovecot indicate that the entire contents of his mailbox are being sent to the client. That is, this user has a particularly large mailbox (~500M) and about 500M are being sent to IMP every five minutes. (Actually, what is the meaning of the above message? He's the only user logging it.) The user does have some filters defined in IMP, but I can't imagine that it would try to apply them to the entire mailbox each time it is accessed. Surely it would only apply the filters to new messages, right? But I can't think of any other reason why we would be seeing this behaviour, and only for this user. I have not yet contacted the user as I need something to tell him other than "you're a bandwidth hog". I think the next step is to ask him to disable his filters, but I would prefer not shooting in the dark. This user alone is adding about 50Mbps of bandwidth; between the time we upgraded to Dovecot (from uw-imap) and he logged in, we were witnessing a huge drop in traffic. He's ruining our graphs! ;-) Seriously, if anyone has some ideas, please let me know. Hi Timo, I've just setup Dovecot v1.2.rc5 and switched the mailbox format of one account to dbox. Therefor I've created an empty directory, called dbox, with access mode 0700, like the user's home directory. After the IMAP login with Thunderbird some dboxes was created. All permissions were set fine (0700 / 0600), except the permissions for the files: * ~/dbox/mailboxes/$FOLDERNAME/dbox-Mails/dbox.index * ~/dbox/mailboxes/$FOLDERNAME/dbox-Mails/dovecot.index.log Those files have the access mode 0666. Hello, I have recently installed Mailscanner/postfix for the mail server and dovecot for (mainly remote) access to email (via T'bird etc. and/or Webmail). Most users still use text mail clients (mutt, pine, some still old elm) while in the office. These clients access mail (both incoming at /var/mail/ and users' private folders in ~/Mail) directly. I wonder whether this mixing of dovecot and non-dovecot access can make any problems, provide, of course, that the users are not using both ways at the same time. AFAIK dovecot makes some indexing. Hi, I had this working until I recently upgraded Dovecot, and now I'm getting a message back from Thunderbird of "Failed to call dspam." when I attempt to move a message into one of the designated spam folders. However, I know from looking at the dspam system.log file, the retraining actually happens - so it -does- appear to be calling dspam. It appears that the 'move' operation fails. Hello, We occasional see high load peaks on our mail servers - these generally don't only last a few minutes. 'Top' show imap taking the lots of CPU resources, is there a dovecot 'top' like program to show dovecot which users are taking system resources? Or how else can this kind of thing be tracked down? hi list, I'm having trouble with a new setup. My server is running postfix (2.5.5), dovecot (1.1.7), dspam (3.8.0). These all seems to work with eachother. When I add dovecot-antispam in the mix, the following problem occurs: New mail arrives, postfix hands the mail to dspam using a content_filter, and dspam clasifies the mail, running as the dspam user. Dspam writes its data away in a sqlite database. Mail then gets reinjected into postfix and delivered to the system user by deliver. When I manually classify a mail using dovecot-antispam, dovecot runs dspam classification as the system user. This gives the error "failed to call dspam" in my client, and the message "dspam[20203]: query error: attempt to write a readonly database: see sql.errors for more details". Since the mentioned sql.errors is owned by the system user and not by the "dspam" user, it seems that the re-classification proces is run as that user, so he has no write access to the sqlite db, which is owned by dspam:dspam. I could fix this by manually changing group ownership to the database, but maybe there is a more generic way to solve this? -- Regards, Tom

Hi Stephan, I've compiled the latest managesieve code from Sun May 17th 2009. ManageSieve had created the sieve directory with 0770 permissions, but the user's home directory has only 0700 permissions. With dovecot-1.{0,1}-managesieve the permissions was set properly. [Dovecot] Couldn't open INBOX: Timeout while waiting for lock

Hi, So I've been through google and the dovecot source and have not yet found a reasonable explanation for the 'Timeout while waiting for lock' error. My customer's configuration is utilizes mbox with the following mbox configs. [snip] pop3_lock_session = yes mbox_read_locks = fcntl mbox_write_locks = fcntl mbox_lock_timeout = 300 [/snip] I see from the source that this error can occur in one of two places: mbox_lock_dotlock() mbox_update_locking() Given my customer is using fcntl locking I automatically assume that it is the later where they are hitting the error. While I see in the source these errors are Temporary Errors; I do wonder what is the specific cause and what should we be looking at to address the errors. One thing we have noticed is that the errors do not occur regulararly. For exapmle, there were no such errors reported on June 9 or June 10; however on June 11 and 12 the errors started to appear. Hi guys, I'm currently experimenting with Postfix, Dovecot and OpenLDAP to setup a mail server hosting virtual users. The standard stuff works fine so far. The only thing that doesn't work as I'd like it to do is Quota. Currently, Dovecot handles/enforces quota through the deliver LDA. When Postfix tries to deliver a mail to a mailbox that is over quota, the deliver LDA bounces the mail back to the sender. I don't like that. I'd rather prefer Postfix to reject the mail right after receiving the '.' DATA termination line and having checked whether the users quota is or would be exceeded. This could work by writing a small Postfix policy server/daemon that does exactly that Dovecot does: - get the user quota limit from userdb (from LDAP in my case) - get the user quota used (from maildirsize in my case) _ check whether the current mail size + quota used exceed the quota limit and if true, reject the mail Of course this would only work for mails going to a single local recipient address, but most of the time, that's just the case. Now I can re-implement that part of functionality from Dovecot in Perl and write such a small policy daemon that does exactly fit my setup (LDAP + maildirsize). There's one thing I'd like much better, though: What about extending Dovecot by a small policy server module for Postfix? Dovecot already has all the code to do the "over quota" checks and supports a great number of combinations for quota limit and used quota storage. My Postfix instance already kinda depends on a running Dovecot due to Dovecot-SASL for SMTP-Authentication and Dovecot-deliver for mail delivery, so it wouldn't introduce a completely new dependency either. Hello, I'm testing gmail to fetch my emails via POP3 and I've noticed that on the server where I run dovecot, the emails that gmail take, are marked as read when I imap my emails with my thunderbird. As I've noticed that this is not true for the email accounts on another mail environment, I was wondering if anyone of you could sugged where I could change the behaviour. Morning I am new to linux and have configured a Postfix + Dovecot Mail server on my SUSE Linux Server 10 SP2 Machine. Postfix works fine I assume as mail gets delivered to user's mailbox or directories. But when I configure a mail client to download mail from the server it finds no mail. When I check the user's mailbox using Webmin mail is delivered. I have also tried to telnet to the server when I do I am able to log in with user's credentials but when I type the list or stat command telnet says there is no mail 0.0Kb. I have tried everything, mail gets delivered to inboxes but telnet and mail clients don't get mail. Please let me know what I am doing wrong Zwelabantu Ngwenya

Hello, I have a freshly setup postfix/dovecot mail server (after a server upgrade I decided to change my sendmail/popper conf to something more modern :) It mostly works, there is no problem in sending/receiving mails in local network, both using text clients like mutt or pine dealing with the incoming/outcoming mail directly. Also dovecot works fine with SSL authentication from the outside world (home computers etc) but only for reading the mail. I have been struggling for several days already to get postfix/dovecot/SSL trio to work for sending (relaying) mail from the home computers (but also from local network) via my server to the final recipients, using authenticated connections. I followed http://wiki.dovecot.org/HowTo/PostfixAndDovecotSASL hints for the configuration of postfix and dovecot (see output of dovecot -n and postconf -n commands below). I also uncommented "smtps" line in /etc/postfix/master.cf file (otherwise postfix was refusing any connections to secure SMTP port). For a while, I uncommented also "submission" line there but to no success either. Now when I try to send a mail from my home PC, using Thuinderbird 2.0.0.21, with SSL connection configured for outgoing smtp server (port 465), using username/password, it shows "Connected to server..." message but after a minute or so, it fails saying that the connection to SMTP server failed. The server log shows: 11:51:24 sirius postfix/smtpd[15126]: connect from my_home_pc_name/ip Jun 11 11:52:25 sirius postfix/smtpd[15126]: lost connection after UNKNOWN from from my_home_pc_name/ip Jun 11 11:52:25 sirius postfix/smtpd[15126]: disconnect from my_home_pc_name/ip There are no dovecot-related messages in the log regarding such an attempt.
