I googled around looking for this, apparantly my google-fu is failing this morning. I just switched over to using a Postfix/Dovecot virtual set-up with Dovecot as the delivery agent. One of my users mistyped his email address when he paid for something through Paypal and the reciept got forwarded to everyone. It didn't bounce or just go to Postmaster, it was delivered to every valid user on the system. Dear all, im looking for a solution to protect an Exchange 2003 email server from direct "pop3-internet-connects". Is it possible that Dovecot act as a POP3-/POP3SSL-Proxy, "LDAP-authenticate" all user logins to a Windows 2003 domain controller and forward then all POP3-connects to a single Exchange 2003 server? Could someone give me some advices or a link for howtos for this solution? The howto on www.dovcot.org (http://wiki.dovecot.org/HowTo/ImapProxy) does not fit in my situation because it prefere a mysql server and not a LDAP-server/domain-controller. [Dovecot] Errors on mbox to Maildir conversion

I have Julian Fitzell's migrateuser.sh script which uses mb2md-3.20.pl to convert a mailbox in mbox format to Maildir. I have set up a test user called "mailtest" which has mail as follows: /var/mail/mailtest /home/mailtest/mail/ Drafts MoreStuff Sent Items Stuff After the conversion I want all this user's mail to be in /home/mailtest/Maildir/ I'm not quite sure how to run the migrateuser.sh script, but I think it's like this (run as user mailtest): $ /usr/local/bin/mb2md/migrateuser.sh mailtest /home/mailtest /home/mailtest/Maildir When I run this I get the following output: mailtest -- Migrating INBOX... Hi, im a newbee using dovecot. I want to use checkpassword, but i've no idea how to use it. DoveCot is running and checking the passwords with a ldap server. But in future we want to use a sql database, where the password and userinformation is stored. I want to use checkpassword, to authetificate the users with the passwords. But ive no idea how a script for checkpassword can be. What should i write to the checkpassword file (actualy the file is empty). The SQL Database is on another server. Hi, I am on dovecot 1.1.11 trying to figure out the expire tool .... The thing is that when I had confed the exp tool there where a bunch of mails inside the mail boxes. Thus it seems as if the database is not updated about them. Is there a way to update it from command line to include the old mails ??? Thanks Harry

hi guys, I hope it's common trouble, but I'm not able to find a solution: - i'am using courier imap and trying to migrate to the dovecot - on courier I have all folders as subfolder of Inbox - i.e. Inbox.Sent but on dovecot the folder Sent is not subfolder of Inbox, but its on the same level. Please is there some possibility to have the subfolders the same behaviour as in courier? we have lot's of customers so after the upgrade the folders can't change. thank you ondrej

[Dovecot] Dovecot and high availability

Hello dear all. Please accept apologies if the topic was discussed already, tried searching the archives but found few details. What I am looking for would be the best way to making Dovecot highly available in an environment where: two Alteons are load-balancing two Dovecot servers, each Alteon seing both of them; the clients are using exclusively POP3; low volume; in case of a Dovecot server failure service should fail over to the other node with preferably no manual intervention. Failover could mean Alteons just ignoring the failed host and routing all requests to the healthy one. Would it be shared NFS volume mounted on both of the servers from some NAS, maildirs put on that volume and both Dovecots seing the mailboxes simultaneously? Any risks? I'm trying to download Julian Fitzell's scripts to convert mbox to Maildir format from the wiki page at http://wiki.dovecot.org/Migration/MailFormat But when I click on the links for the scripts it just sends me back to the same page rather than downloading the scripts. The only symptom is the log messages. The client sees nothing unusual, at least in this case where the session is a retrieval of one large message. I haven't tried long sessions retrieving multiple messages. If I remove pop3_lock_session = yes, the issue does not occur. I don't think I need it. I put it in a long time ago to attempt to solve a problem that was actually caused by something else. [Dovecot] pop-proxy to redundant servers ?

I'm considering putting two servers with failover IP-addresses in front of our pop/imap cluster, with dovecot in proxy-mode running on both servers. But, can dovecot handle more than one backend server for each user ? I.e. I would want to point the dovecot proxy to send userX to backend-server1, or backend-server2 if backend-server1 is down. Is something like that possible ? -jf

[Dovecot] setting up both system password users AND virtual users

I'm afraid that I am a rookie at dovecot, and cannot seem to figure the configuration for a dual system & virtual setup. For now I am using POP3 ---only--- I've got the "system" working, but cannot figure out how to add the virtual system. The docs aren't quite clear enough for me to understand. The wiki example for dynamic passwd-file locations shows: mail_location = maildir:/home/%d/%n/Maildir userdb passwd-file etc etc I am using mbox, not maildir, AND I've already used mail_location for my system accounts with the following line: mail_location = mbox:~/mail/:INBOX=/mail/%u In the case of my virtual users, the mail is stored in INBOX=/mail/VIRTUAL/%d/%u and the password file is stored in /exim/etc/VIRTUAL/%d/passwd would someone kindly help me with this? thanks!

Hello, I would like to ask for your help. I have noticed some error messages issued by dovecot. Mar 13 20:00:57 relay dovecot: auth-worker(default): pam(example(a)example.com): pam_authenticate() failed: authentication error (/etc/pam.d/dovecot missing?) Not surprisingly $ l /etc/pam.d/dovecot ls: /etc/pam.d/dovecot: No such file or directory The funny thing is that authentication does work but I guess I have something misconfigured. Hello folks - I'm running dovecot on top of qmail/vpopmail/mysql, serving up about 2500 mailboxes. Everything is running very smooth and fast.... I recently upgraded dovecot to 1.1, so I'm trying to implement some extra features like IMAP quotas. I'm using the sql passdb, with the following config: driver = mysql connect = host=/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock user=username password=password dbname=vpopmail default_pass_scheme = PLAIN password_query = SELECT CONCAT(pw_name, '@', pw_domain) AS user, pw_clear_passwd AS password FROM vpopmail WHERE pw_name = '%n' AND pw_domain = '%d' user_query = SELECT pw_dir as home, 508 AS uid, 503 AS gid FROM vpopmail WHERE pw_name = '%n' AND pw_domain = '%d' My vpopmail installation keeps the quota information in the mysql database (pw_shell field) instead of maildirsize. The quota is in maildir format, e.g. 400M or 50331648S. Unlimited quota is specified as NOQUOTA. The question is... Is it possible to make dovecot understand this format and get it directly from SQL (via user_query, for example) or would it be easier to reconfigure the vpopmail installation somehow to use maildirsize? [Dovecot] how to handle CA CRL updates with client certificate verification context ?

Hello, As far as I can read in the Dovecot SSL configuration wiki page, each CA cert must be followed by the related CA CRL in the client certificate verification context ("ssl_ca_file" setting). In my company we do have our own PKI and as soon as Client certificate is compromised we do revoke it and update the related CA's CRL. Does that mean that I have to issue a new "ssl_ca_file" file as soon as our issuing CA CRL is updated ? If yes, does someone has an idea on how to do so ? Is it then necessary to restart dovecot process (to take the "ssl_ca_file" file changes into account) ? Does Dovecot have a way to check the issuing CA CRL automatically ? (the CRL is published in DER format and is accessible though http, the URI is mentionned in the CRL Distribution points of the CA certificate) Thanks in advance for your help. Regards, Raphael

Hello list, I'm running into some problems, and I couldn't find any info about this anywhere on the net. I recently set up a new debian lenny machine, and used my notes from the last debian etch machine I set up, which basically is for postfix + dovecot for sasl auth. On my old etch box, in the dovecot.conf, in the auth default section, I have a socket listen { client { path = /var/spool/postfix/private/auth mode = 0660 user = postfix group = postfix } } However, if I use the same config on my lenny setup, dovecot fails to start, and I see this in my logs: Mar 13 19:16:30 mailserver dovecot: Dovecot v1.0.15 starting up Mar 13 19:16:30 mailserver dovecot: auth(default): User doesn't exist: postfix Mar 13 19:16:30 mailserver dovecot: Auth process died too early - shutting down Mar 13 19:16:30 mailserver dovecot: child 4623 (auth) returned error 89 Now if I comment out the user and group lines, it works fine, but the socket is owned by root, and so I have to change the mode line so that it's world readable in order for postfix to use it. The version of dovecot in etch is: 1.0.rc15-2etch4 and the version in lenny is: 1.0.15-2.3 Any ideas why this might be happening? Did the syntax to do this change between those versions? Any input? I guess I don't mind leaving it world readable, but I wasted an entire morning trying everything to get it to work, so I guess I'm hoping some one atleast has an answer as to why it doesn't work. [Dovecot] Using LDAP for Dovecot extra/regular fields

Hi, We're moving to a dovecot proxy / server configuration in order to make sure that a users go to a specific server. If someone has used these LDAP for this, there are a few things that I wish to verify. Dovecot does not verify that type of the LDAP attribute, only that the returned value works. If a boolean is used for a yes/no field, then FALSE sets the field to no and TRUE sets the field to yes. If a multivalue attribute is used for a single value field, the last returned value for the LDAP lookup is used in that field (i.e. host will use the last value). If a string attribute is returned for a yes/no field and has any value, then the associated field is set to true. There is no automatic failover with the host field so if the remote host is down, the IMAP connection no longer works. I'm fairly sure of all of these except for the boolean. Now this is just due diligence. I don't know that turning on/off or switching LDAP attributes is the right way to go to handle failover but it might work for phased rollout. My feeling is the best configuration will be using a secondary IP address that has to be manually turned on for a host after a reboot or shutdown. This creates a poor mans "fencing". The secondary can either be brought up on another host or handled via a load balance with DSR/backup server. As a practical matter, it is probably worth setting sensible attributes for each field (i.e. numeric for host, boolean for proxy/proxy_maybe etc). Any interest in registering an LDAP object class for dovecot? ---Jack

If set to "yes", Dovecot assumes it's the only one changing the cur/ directory (so other MDAs can add mails to new/ without problems). This makes it possible to avoid rescanning the cur/ directory all the time looking for filenames. It also looks like (in stress testing) it still scans the cur/ directory unneededly in some situations, but it shouldn't be common. Maybe I'll look into it some day to see why. I'd be interested in hearing how large performance benefits it gives, if any. If they're big I could consider adding it to v1.1.12. If they're pretty much irrelevant I probably won't even bother adding the code to v1.2. I guess you mainly see the performance benefits with large/huge mailboxes.

[Dovecot] General approach question - am I doing this the right way?

Quick outline of my current working setup: I'm running dovecot 1.0.5 as an IMAP mail server on my ubuntu home server, which i connect to with my phone and several other machines to check my mail etc. i use getmail to collect mail from my various pop accounts. getmail filters the mail using spamassassin via a Filter_external, before moving it to my Maildir on the home server. Then when I connect to the home server from my various machines, IMAP manages the status of all the mail, so unread messages are common etc. All works very nicely. However I'd like to fix a minor annoyance... ...Spamassassin marks mail as SPAM but the mail client has to do the job of moving it to the Junk folder. I'd like the mail to be filtered on the home server on receipt. Am I just making things really complicated for myself? Is there a simpler setup for what I'm trying to do? [Dovecot] Extremely custom mailbox locations

I'm in the position where I'd like to offer IMAP access to a collection of email accounts which are stored in a very odd manner. Files are stored as: /blah/$dd-$mm-$yy/$domain/1234/1234 For example: /reject/12-3-2009/cvsrepository.org/35199/35199639 There is a single file for each mail, which I guess technically probably counts as an mbox folder, but only just. I can handle the custom login requirements I have, but I see no obvious way to create a mailstore from this information unless I build up a parallel symlink farm, such as: /imap/cvsrepository.org/{new cur tmp} I suspect if I fill cur/ with symlinks to each of the individual messages things will mostly work out OK, but I wonder if that is the best solution, or if there is a slim chance that I could serve this hierarchy without the intermediate step? Dear List, Based on the following installed environment: - OpenBSD (latest version!) - PostgreSQL - dovecot with SSL would like to have a mail server which accepts system as well as virtual users and being able to connect to their mailboxes either via an MUA (Thunderbird etc.) or a web interface (squirrel mail?). When using the web interface, non registered users should be able to creat e-mail accounts which will be dovecot virtual users! Which components should I use? Thanks

Hello, It's my first mailserver I set up. Thanks to everybody who contributes to dovecot. Dovecot works great for me! One thing I want to get rid off is this traceback error using dovecot with sieve. [Dovecot] Imap logout message on Dovecot restart

I'm trying to receive a "Disconnected" message in my logfile for the connected imap-clients when I restart dovecot. When you disconnect a client, you receive the following message in your log: Mar 12 21:45:55 mail dovecot: IMAP(mailbox(a)domain.com): Disconnected: Logged out bytes=7496/22441 When a IMAP client is connected and Dovecot is restarted, this message is not shown. This should be solvable by a script like this: #!/bin/sh unset LOG_TO_MASTER export USE_SYSLOG=1 exec /usr/lib/dovecot/imap But this logs the user that runs the script into the imap server and when I terminate this terminal I get a "Disconnected" message for the local linux user, which I don't need of course. Is there a way to get to what I want ? I want to log my IMAP statics for every day and I need to "disconnect" my imap clients for it in some way to receive the Disconnected message and count from there. Thanks.

[Dovecot] High load/corrupted indexes after moving mailboxes?

Hello, we're experiencing an odd issue after combining two vDisks used for mail storage into one big new LVM. We've done this in the past successfully and didn't experience a lot of problems. We stopped all services (dovecot/postfix) to ensure that mailbox contents (Maildir) will not be changed, rsynch'ed the mail to the new disks and restarted everything. When we restarted dovecot, we noticed a huge spike in load (average load in top and high cpu iowait) and isolated dovecot as the issue. At some point, the average load crept up to over 100 and crashed the server twice. However, over time the average load and cpu wait times went down slightly. I have noticed a spike in load after moving user's mail storage, but not like this. It almost looks like everyone is either re-indexing or re-caching their mail? Any help would be appreciated. [Dovecot] migration from dovecot to dovecot on different servers without downtime (dovecot replication?)

Hello, I have an imap server with huge Maildirs and several users running dovecot 1.0.13, I need to migrate all the imap accounts to a new box which runs dovecot 1.1.4. The requisite is that need to do it with no downtime or minimal downtime possible, and totally transparent for end users. I have tried IMAP<-->IMAP syncing using a master user in both servers and imapsync, however due to the huge Maildirs (some users have more than 10 years of mail) this tends to be quite slow and painful. Can I tar all the user's Maildir and move them from one box to the other, and then run imapsync again? which I assume that would be faster... or is there any better solution I am not aware of? (ie: I've seen some emails about dovecot replication on the list archives, but few details of how that should be configured). I'd appreciate any feedback or thoughts on this matter. Thank you. I am trying to compile Dovecot Sieve, when i execute the command make i get this error: /usr/ccs/bin/ld: illegal option -- start-group The configure sentence was : ./configure --with-dovecot=/export/software/dovecot1.2/dovecot-1.2 And it finishes right. I have succesfully compile dovecot 1.2 beta 1 source with dovecot-1.2-managesieve-0.11.3 patch. I am trying to get a shared folder to work. [Dovecot] GUI/WUI for creating (common) sieve scripts?

Anyone aware of a Web User Interface or GUI to allow users to create simple/common-type sieve scripts? I found the sieve testing and have used it as I play; plus mangesieve (and Net:ManageSieve.pm) but want to allow users to build so some clicking and maybe a little typing and then end up with some filters. So before I go invent this wheel I'd like to know what others are doing? TIA, Rod --

Ok - at this time I am using the following non-default settings: Samba server - smb.conf [Mailstorage] ea support = Yes use sendfile = Yes fake oplocks = Yes delete readonly = Yes Dovecot - dovecot.conf mmap_disable = yes dotlock_use_excl = yes fsync_disable = yes lock_method = dotlock I'm still testing - but at this time I'm seeing no errors. Two options I can state cause severe problems are the "directio" and "setuids" mount options for the cifs client. -- Daniel

Hi, I was trying to crosscompile dovecot, but I got some error: --with-notify=inotify don't work, as it try to run a test program to verify if inotify is supported in the building platform. Solved with --with-notify=dnotify. Ihmo, is more a hack than a solution. | checking whether posix_fallocate() works... configure: error: cannot run test program while cross compiling I can't find an a suitable option for this error. Again the problem is that configure can't run an executable for a different platform. It's possible to set a safe default? [Dovecot] Random timeouts on mailboxes

Hello, My dovecot server is currently having random issues when users want to acces their mailbox. When the issue is occuring there's a timeout. It's random because it happens more or less often and is not dependent on a user or the way their check the mailbox. The time during the problem occurs is random, sometimes it's less than a minute, sometimes it's some hours. When a user can't connect to its mailbox, he generally can receive its emails through his BlackBerry (it's just to illustrate the fact that it doesn't seem to be linked to an account). When this issue occurs they can't receive the headers from any folder (INBOX, custom, sent, ...) and can't read mails that headers are known by the mail client. When there's timeout, users can send emails (same jail and with an error when the client want to write a copy in the sentbox) and use the calendar server for example (on the same machine). Dovecot is running on a FreeBSD 7.0 32bits, 4GB RAM, Intel Xeon QuadCore @ 1.86 Ghz, and 3*500Gb SATA-2 RAID-5 disks. The box is hosting jails, and the mail jails ( imap + smtp, clamav + spamassassin ). The mail jails are new (since August 2008) but worked great since the beginning of this year. The server is hosting 122 accounts currently. My first thought was that there's an I/O issue, the disks are maybe too busy or there's paging that result in a timeout. I check it through vmstat an top commands but nothing appears, there's always some memory free (between 90-300 MB) and a very little paging, generally around 1MB. The fault are under a hundred and when, few times, it has more than a hundred (generally under 200) the next snapshot is under 100. I set the screen/line to refresh every 5 seconds. I shutdowned all jails not directly related to the mail service but the problem still occured. I also separated clamav and spamassassin from imap and smtp to a different box. After that I checked the dovecot config to lighten it, and ( only ) disabled fsync. I upgraded the RAM, added memory is used, but nothing changed. The human resources are constantly changing here, we were more before the problem started than now (around 10-15%), to illustrate the fact that I don't think it is linked to the number of users. I tried to recreate some accounts having the issue, but the problem appeared again. I upgraded Dovecot Friday to 1.1.11 from 1.1.7 (The installation was before 1.1.7, I did an upgrade some times ago). I used a command script to log Thunderbird's IMAP activity, everything is fine but there's no timestamp in the logs. So I'm only sure now this is not an erroneous packet/info sent problem. I watched the TB doc ( http://www.mozilla.org/projects/nspr/reference/html/prlog.html#25306 ) but there's no directive to put a timestamp for each line of log. The network is fine. I tried different configuration to be sure a device isn't doing something weird. Now, I don't know what to check to identify the issue. Hi Bastien, just a little thought because I had an issue like this (but with cyrus): Where is your thunderbird installation stored? In my case, it was not locally but on some windows mapped drive, and so also the imap cache of thunderbird was on this drive. Because we have a lot of mails in our accounts, the cache was about 50-100MB for some users, and users with a lot mail accounts had very often timeouts. This was due to performance problems on our network storage. Sometimes it also works to delete thunderbird´s cache files. Then it has to download all the headers again (bad with bad performing network storage :-/), but it seems that these cache files get corrupted from time to time and this also produces timeouts. kind regards Andreas -- Computer Bild Tarifsieger! Some users would like to use the alias address as POP/IMAP login instead of the 'true' account. Is this possible?. I am using dovecot version 1.0,10, from ubuntu hardy packages. Hello, I have a standard Mailman/Pipermail install with mboxes at MM_HOME/archives/public/listname.mbox/listname.box What's the best way to export these via IMAP using Dovecot 1.0rc15 on Debian etch? I know I could make a namespace with MM_HOME/archives/public/ but that would result in half of the directories being exported (the ones containing the HTML archives) being unusable. I could also create another directory and symlink all the mboxes in there but that seems wrong. Preferably, I'd like to have something like a namespace with a mail location of MM_HOME/archives/public/*.mbox/ but that doesn't work with v1.0 Ricardo

No one replied to my original email, and I was hoping if I re-phrase my question I can get an answer. I would like dovecot to provide system email (located at /mail/%u with system password and /home/%u) and also virtual email (/u/mail/VIRTUAL/%d/%u with password found at /u/exim/etc/VIRTUAL/%d/passwd). NO home space, but I would consider /home/%d/%u This I think has something to do with namespace, but the docs are too vague for me to understand. Can anyone help me out? I would very much appreciate it. I would even consider PAYING someone to set me straight. I am looking to migrate away from vm-pop3d. initially with POP3 and ultimately into IMAP. Thanks!

The expire configuration in the example config file in 1.1.11 is broken: root@omega:/etc/dovecot# /etc/init.d/dovecot restart Restarting IMAP/POP3 mail server: dovecot Unknown dict module: db expire plugin: dict_init() failed Error: imap dump-capability process returned 89 Fatal: Invalid configuration in /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf failed! It's inconsistent with the documentation at http://wiki.dovecot.org/Plugins/Expire, so I've made the attached patch to try and fix it. Note: I don't know if this new configuration is correct either, because its a new box and I've not got any mails old enough to cause the plugin to try and write anything, but at least I can start dovecot like this. :) Regards, Rob

How does IMAP lock the /var/spool/mail/user file? Here's my problem: I'm writing a script to expire old or oversize mail through a series of archive folders. I don't want to take the whole server down to do this, nor does it seem like I would have to lock the user out entirely if I can manage to emulate the locks correctly. I am able to lock /var/spool/mail/user (and ~user/mail/*) from procmail, dovecot popmail, and openwebmail using dotlocks. What do I do to prevent dovecot imap from writing the spool and various mbox files while my script is running? Just posix fcntl on the various files? I'm trying to use Mail::Box in perl which I'm having some problems with, corresponding with the developer, but if anyone has any easy way out I would appreciate the advice very much! Mark

Hello, We're having a problem in Dovecot 1.1.8 with a failed assertion on certain mbox format mailboxes. It happens both with deliver when it attempts to delier to the mailbox, and with IMAP connections for the affected box (though I'm not sure what they're doing at the time). [Dovecot] set \Seen flag on mail

I'm looking for a way to set the \Seen flag on certain mail no matter what. Currently I'm using a global sieve script to do this. From what I've read, there is no way to enforce the global script if the user creates their own sieve script. More details: I have a postfix transport that along with sender_bcc_maps and recipient_bcc_maps uses deliver to create a read only archive of user's mail. The mail intended to be archived is stored in a per user imap folder called "Archives" that uses the ACL plugin to make the messages there read only. In addition to that, I want the mail marked as \Seen upon delivery so that user's who subscribe to the Arhives folder don't see new mail indications and what not when mail is delivered there. Is there a better way to set the \Seen flag other than the global sieve script since it can be overridden by the user? -- J.P. Trosclair

Hello List, I want to allow plain text passwords only on ssl/tls. Is it possible to have: auth default { mechanisms = cram-md5 ntlm ...... } and then over-ride this when connection is ssl/tls to allow plain and login? I have tried adding "mechanisms = plain login cram-md5 ntlm" to "protocol imaps{}" as an example but I get an error that the protocol does not exist. I read somewhere today that dovecot enables plain automatically over secure connections (ssl/tls) but I'm not seeing it. Also, "auth default" suggests that "auth something_else" is possible. I'm probably just doing a poor job of research but I'm not finding the answers I'm seeking. I have to make dotlock work because this openwebmail thing only supports one of dotlock or flock, but procmail delivery does dotlock and fcntl. procmail correctly creates a dotlock file in /var/spool/mail/username.lock when delivering, I can watch this with `while :; do ls -la | grep lock; done`. It works fine when lock_method=fcntl, but no dotlock file shows up in /var/spool/mail. mbox_write_locks are working correctly with mbox_write_locks = dotlock fcntl, the dotlock file shows up in the user's mail directory. I tried making all of the binaries root:mail with g+s, same as /usr/bin/lockfile, but this was no help. It also does not help to chmod +t /var/spool/mail. $ dovecot --version 1.0.7 kernel 2.6.18-92.1.22.el5 centos mmap_disable = yes (req'd for ~/mail dotlocks, makes no difference either way for /var/spool/mail) Any ideas? [Dovecot] GSSAPI cross-realm still broken

I've been trying to track down some problems with Dovecot in a Kerberos 5 cross-realm environment, and there seem to be a few issues. LOGIN/PLAIN work fine using pam_krb5, but GSSAPI is a bit harder to handle. On line 436 of src/auth/mech-gssapi.c, the authn_name and the authz_name are compared using gss_compare_name. This dates back to the message at: http://dovecot.org/pipermail/dovecot/2005-October/009615.html While everything within that message is true, as things stand, Dovecot is unusable in a cross-realm environment. When cross-realm tickets are used, the authn_name is "username@REALM" and the authz_name is "username" (or vice versa, I don't remember). The attached patch causes dovecot to display these two values in human-readable format to illustrate the issue. Because these two GSS names differ, Dovecot refuses to allow access in spite of the fact that krb5_kuserok would return TRUE. I am not the only one to have noticed this problem: http://dovecot.org/pipermail/dovecot/2007-July/023868.html http://dovecot.org/pipermail/dovecot/2007-October/026027.html Might I suggest that some more robust security checking be done instead of abusing gss_compare_name like this? I don't know how to do this using GSSAPI, but on the Kerberos side Heimdal provides the function krb5_kuserok. Hello all, Im hoping maybe someone on this list has already looked for or built something similiar. Basically from what I can tell, phps imap libraries or whatever dont support setting custom keywords. So I am wondering if someone has a library or script that can take a username, domain, password, folder, uid and flag to set so that my webmail app can call this to set imap keywords. So far my google searching isnt turning up anything, but searching for the word keyword doesnt really help.

Hi, During discussions with the boss we've speculated about having users having only specific services available. One of the ideas was to have users being able to specify if they wanted POP3 or IMAP and whether we could limit their access to one or the other server side. We use MySQL for the userdb and passdb lookups at the moment. Is it possible to specify separate auth files with different MySQL lookups per protocol? We've been using an imap(s) dovecot server for a while on an ubuntu 8.04.2 and we noted that tags set by thunderbird ("important", "to do", etc.) are almost always lost, i.e., when connecting to the same imap account from another machine, the tags are not there anymore... this always happens for the Inbox, and seldomly for other imap folders... anyone else experiencing this? [Dovecot] Maildir format use question

Hey all, I've got a couple servers using Maildir format. As I understand it from a simple perspective, 'new' contains newly delivered messages, and 'cur' contains messages that have been 'handled'. I like to keep things simple for users, so rather than have 'Spam', 'Junk' 'ToLearn' and other possibly confusing folders, what I thought I would do is scan their .Spam/cur folder for mail that was older than an hour (based on file atime(?) stamp) and feed that through SpamAssassin. The idea being that anything in 'cur' would: 1. have been moved there by the user. 2. be recently read, and I think if it were innocent, would be handled within an hour 3. Not contain newly delivered, unread mail. This is actually what I see when I view my Spam folder through Evolution. If I use a PHP webclient - either Horde or Roundcube (I've captured the debugs if you'd like them), then a simple view of the Spam folder causes the files to be moved from new/ to cur/. They are updated with the :2, - but since nothing was actually done, no flags are added. So I'm left with a quandry. I guess the simple question is, Should mail in cur, EVER not have a flag? I suppose if it were marked as UNSEEN after being SEEN, that's possible. So I just answered myself there :) Is it possible to have Dovecot NOT move a file from new/ to cur/ until a flag has been assigned to the mail? Just from a, possible, performance standpoint - it seems when accessing an INBOX from a PHP webmail system with MANY new mails, there is an unnecessary(?) mass move of these files to another folder. Thoughts? Rick

I'm using Dovecot with Postfix as my MTA I need to set up forwarding with Dovecot. I create a .forward file in my user's home directory, and in the .forward file I put destination_email_address email(a)example.com. Well, it got delivered to the forwarded email just fine. But the sender also got an undeliverable email from the dovecot mailbox and a copy was not saved in the dovecot mailbox. I need emails forwarded, and a copy saved in the dovecot mailbox. What options are available for remote storage, i.e. storage devices directly mounted on the machine running Dovecot? I've seen discussions of NFS usage - but my experiences with NFS in times past have been poor. CIFS has worked well for me for non-mail use - would this be suitable? I'm throwing an error compiling with a custom-compiled gcc 3.2.3 on one box. The configuration string is CC=/usr/local/gcc3.2.3/bin/gcc CPPFLAGS=-I/usr/local/ssl/include LDFLAGS=-L/usr/local/ssl/lib ./configure --with-ssl=openssl --with-ssldir=/usr/local/ssl/certs --with-pam --with-pop3d --sysconfdir=/etc --localstatedir=/var I've used this to compile on other older boxes with success. And I compared the command lines and they are identical. This is the error I get with src/master/main.c main.c:365:1: directives may not be used inside a macro argument main.c:364:16: unterminated argument list invoking macro "printf" main.c: In function `print_build_options': main.c:372: syntax error before string constant Changing the function to a simpler function without the ifdef's resolves the issue and dovecot compiles. I would really like to know why two boxes with the same compiler are failing on one but not the other. Perhaps there's some program or library or preprocessor or path or something out of whack. Especially since using gcc 2.96 on the same box works! Hello, Im using Ubuntu 8.10 with Dovecot 1.0.10. I am using passwd files, not a MySQL database. I have 2 files, a "users" file, and a "passwd" file. I have added: allow_nets=10.1.10.1 to the end of a specific users entry in the users file. When that user tries to login, I get the following in the logs: dovecot: 2009-02-28 09:06:59 Error: IMAP(bob(a)mydomain.com): Ambiguous mail location setting, don't know what to do with it: allow_nets=10.1.10.1 (try prefixing it with mbox: or maildir:) dovecot: 2009-02-28 09:06:59 Error: IMAP(boo(a)mydomain.com): Mail storage creation failed with mail_location: allow_nets=10.1.10.1 dovecot: 2009-02-28 09:06:59 Error: child 4174 (imap) returned error 89 here is the line from my users file: bob@mydomain.com::5000:5000::/home/vmail/ mydomain.com/:/bin/false::allow_nets=10.1.10.1 here is the corresponding line from the passwd file: bob@oldschoolpunk.com:$1$evcHgrbC$BuyQRCspMzTpD8zkphxo0/ My goal is, that I want to allow this user to check email ONLY from the IP specified (i.e. 10.1.10.1) I just can't seem to get this working... [Dovecot] Custom flags in v1.0.15

Hello all, I'm having problems with setting custom flags on a dovecot imap setup, with mbox mail store. I was running v1.0rc15 on a Debian Etch box, upgraded recently to v1.0.15, but nothing changed. The problem : I read my mail using IMAP. In Thunderbird (various versions, current one being v2.0.0.19), I can set various message flags (Important, Personal, Work, ... mapped to IMAP as $Label4,$ $Label3, $Label2, ...). I read my mail from several machines, but all changes made on the message flags from one machine won't appear on the others !? Still I've read that those flags are supported in Dovecot. Actually, I logged the IMAP traffic, and saw that Dovecot claims to "handle" them. For instance, I added a flag to a message : Thunderbird > 621 uid store 35150 +FLAGS ($label4) Dovecot > * 6716 FETCH (UID 35150 FLAGS (\Seen \Recent $Label4)) Now, if I close TB, so that changes are written to the mbox file, and if I open that file on a the server with any text editor, the 'X-Keywords' line doesn't appear !? And as a matter of a fact, if I read my mail from any other machine, the flag isn't set ! Anyone knows where the problem can be ? Do I need to upgrade to v1.1 ? Or are custom flags actually supported in v1.0 (which I believe is the case) ? I browsed through the internet and searched the archives of this mailing list but didn't find any clue ... I have dovecot and postfix set up on debian lenny. Squirrelmail is used to access the mail. I put a .forward file in my user's home directory, and that sure gets the job done of forwarding email, but I need a copy saved on the local machine as well. How do I do that?

I already have usernames that are unique, by using Dovecot variables I have username~domain.org as the actual username/mailbox name. Ok, so, I have 3 aspects to consider: a) When mail arrives b) When user logs in to check mail c) Where mailboxes are located a) Since I can make mailbox names unique with Dovecot variables (mailbox name is "susan~domain.org" which is different from susan~anotherdomain.org) when mail arrives, the mail message will be saved to the correct mailbox (even if I have, under the same mailbox root, two users with "susan" as the login, but from different domains). b) Since you said, on Dovecot 1.0.x, I can have two passdb ldap{}'s, when the user logs in, he/she will be redirect to the right mailbox, not the "other susan". c) Ok, the two above give me the possibility to have all mailboxes, from the two domains, under the same mailbox root, users will be unique no matter the scenario (mail arriving, user checking mail), BUT, I would like to keep them separated anyways, is that possible to force that? > thanks! = Miata Convertible Tops Buy manufacturer direct from gahh, leader in high-quality convertible tops using original materials and attachments. [Dovecot] Quota + Sieve

Thanx to everybody's help , i have got a working combination of; - dovecot LDA - smtp auth thru dovecot sasl - postfix - virtual users in mysql - postfixadmin - thunderbird as the email client Just 2 additional questions - A. Sieve .............. With the imap filters in thunderbird, do i need to use sieve in dovecot? my initial observations/ findings say "no"? B. Quota ............. If i have not set quota in dovecot or postfix ( no quota related configuration ), may i then assume, the users have "unlimited storage" , limited only by the hardware/filesystem? I would like to have this feature ( just like unlimited storage in yahoo ) and just have a cron script running regularly to delete old emails ( for middle level, low level users ). is it configurable anywhere on the runtime level, is it configurable at all selinux policy does not allow for transition between some domains that subsequently results in deliver not being granted permissions it needs to write to /tmp instead of compiling a policy module I wonder what is the matter with that raw storage and /tmp? cheers ___________________________________________________________ Try the all-new Yahoo! Hi, Here's the scenario. I want to set up a mailbox so that when mail sent to the address is piped to a processing application, instead of going to a mailbox. One way I can do this is to set up a mailbox and then have an application that checks to see if there's mail and then processes it. (Old school Unix script) Is there a way to set it up with dovecot? Hello, I have a Debian machine that is virtual-hosting 6 domains with exim4. I finally got exim4 working well enough where I can send and receive mail using the mail command on my machine. I would eventually like to have SquirrelMail (which requires IMAP) working on my website. For whatever reason, exim4 doesn't seem to support IMAP. I found out that Dovecot is a prominent IMAP server. So I installed the most current Dovecot package (1.0.rc15) in Debian. Something is broken though... As I log into SquirrelMail, I get an error message "Error connecting to IMAP server: localhost. 111 : Connection refused". To investigate, I decided to telnet localhost on port 143 and found out that yes, the connection is in fact refused. So what do I need to do in order to have dovecot listen on port 143? Also, I noticed when I restart dovecot... debian:/etc/dovecot# /etc/init.d/dovecot restart Restarting mail server: dovecotError: Can't use mail executable /usr/lib/dovecot/imap: No such file or directory I hope this isn't a serious problem. Hi list I am just experimenting with seting up my own email server. I want some tips and hints on how to secure my setup to prevent unauthorised assess to my email. I have read through the wiki and have not found many tips. I hope to improve the wiki with tips gathered from the emailing list. :-) A basic measurement I could take right now would be to set more secure file premissions on my setup. My setup is based on http://wiki.dovecot.org/HowTo/VirtualhostingWithExim with a few addittions: fetchmail and exim4 deliver mail to my maildir and dovecot grants me access through imap. dovecot authenticates against /home/postmaster/passwd.digest and ./passwd.cram -- Daniel Aleksandersen <aleksandersen(a)runbox.no>

I came up with this trick That is Since my previous mail server had a bunch of complex procmail recipies and I am not sure that I can turn them into sieve scripts I am calling dovecot deliver to drop mail in it's final $DEFAULT destination. :0 | /some/path/dovecot/deliver in order to update the index, control files etc upon delivery time. So far in my "tests" it works. But I wonder if this is wise or not. Regards, Harry.
