Trying to compile Dovecot on Solaris 10. I have tried the 99.14 release and today's 1.0-stable release. Hello List, I am in the process of building a new mail system here. I am hoping to eventually migrate my users from mbox storage to maildir. They have been using mbox forever and would rather get used to maildir slowly. So I have come upon the idea of using namespaces to provide the different mailstores. Since this isn't available in the current stable, or at least I could not figure out how to do it, I have been working with 1.0-test68 since it provides the ability to configure things with the namespaces. [Dovecot] test-68 coredump

I've tried upgrading from test-51 to test-68, with mixed results. It seems to fix the problem I had with imap and Thunderbird getting confused and not showing headers or body for some email. But something in dovecot is coredumping when I select certain mailboxes. Thunderbird just hangs when you select that mailbox, and mutt gets an EOF on the imap socket while "fetching message headers". Other mailboxes seem to run OK. The failing ones _might_ be empty or have only 1 message in them. Removing index files doesn't help. There is a core file in /var/run/dovecot, and file(1) says it's from dovecot-auth, but GDB can't make sense of the core with that executable, and the login has well and truly run when the core happens. (The core doesn't seem to be from the imap process either.) Any clues how I might debug this? [Solaris 2.8, gcc-3.3, dovecot test-68, imap+Maildir, Thunderbird 1.0.2 on OSX and mutt on Solaris]

[Dovecot] quota-command?

Hello, if you log in at hotmail.com, gmx, lycos or yahoo, you can see something like "using 1.4mb of 250mb total". Is there any IMAP command to check to current quota usage? Our webmail-interface will not have access to the filesystem to summarize the size of each file, so an IMAP-command would be great. I don't know if this would be a new feature or just part of the Maildir++ quota-system, that is not yet supported by dovecot. Regards Marten

Hello Gang, I am new to dovecot and the only reason (so far) I would like to use dovecot, and in production with 12k+ users, is the fact that it's supposed to be faster and less of a resource hog. Now, sometimes I am really good at reading the documentations but it sometimes happens that one overlooks something. I did read the migration notes three times! My users are in /etc/passwd and I am running dovecot in IMAP only mode. I did put default_mail_env = maildir:~/Maildir in dovecot.conf, then for one user, I did the following: cd ~wash/Maildir cp courierimapsubscribed .subscriptions # Then I edited to remove "INBOX." cp courierimapuiddb dovecot-uidlist The permissions are right, but when I login as this user, I don't see all the folders that had been there before when he was using courier-imap!! When I login to the web interface (we use Squirrelmail) and go to the Folder options, I can't see any folders to subscribe to either! Now my questions: 1. What am I overlooking?? 2. Does someone have a script that can be used to automate the copying of courierimapsubscribed to .subscriptions and that of courierimapuiddb to dovecot-uidlist, and the editing to remove the "INBOX."? I am sure I really don't have to reinvent the wheel, no? Meanwhile I am hitting google, while waiting for your answers. Hello, I'm checking my way to migrate from Courier to Dovecot. Wiki says that "there's currently no easy way to migrate them [the keywords]". Frankly, I lack the information to check if some client is using keywords at all. More importantly, is it OK to assume that when SELECT INBOX returns no \* in OK [PERMANENTFLAGS ...] that the IMAP server does not allow keywords at all? I use Squirrelmail to filter messages, and it's doing this: raw log in: A009 UID SEARCH CHARSET ISO-8859-1 ALL Header X-Spam-Level {4} **** A010 LIST "" "spam" raw log out: * SEARCH A009 OK Search completed. * BAD Error in IMAP command : Unknown command. * LIST (\NoInferiors \Marked) "/" "spam" A010 OK List completed. it goes on like that in the log for every filter. What exactly is the BAD Error there, and is it something I can fix?

We have NFS-mounted user directories which cause significant problems with stale file handles: dovecot: IMAP(uid): fstat() failed with file /home/uid/mail/.imap/INBOX/dovecot.index.log: Stale NFS file handle (a) why can't it just close the file and re-open ? (b) is there a way to specify with the 'default_mail_env' (or in some other way) the location of **only** the indexes (and let dovecot autodetect all else?). I have already tried 'mmap_disable = yes', but that does not solve the problem, and if I set 'default_mail_env = INDEX=/var/spool/mail/INDEX/%u', I get errors like: IMAP(uid): Failed to create storage with data: INDEX=/var/spool/mail/INDEX/uid I don't want to specify mbox:~/mail/ or mbox:~/Mail/, because some users have one and some the other.

[Dovecot] pop vs. imap inconsistancy

I am converting from courier and have noticed change in behaviour with Dovecot. I use maildirs with squirrelmail connecting by imap as well as a POP3 client. Courier would set the 'mail status-read' flag for any message which was downloaded with the POP3 interface. Dovecot apparently does not. Is this a bug or intended behaviour? If it is intentional, can it be changed with the config file?

I have a mail account which needs to be accessed by 4-5 people simultaneously through IMAP. As of now I have configured it on the respective clients using the same username and password so we have multiple people accessing the same account through their mail clients simultaneously and it is working flawlessly. Is this alright or can it lead to some problems or corruption of data later ? What is the best way to allow multiple people to access a single mailbox for read as well as write operations ? Thanks,

[Dovecot] Error in rename uidlist while fetching through pop3

My dovecot server seems to randomly begin giving errors to pop3 users who try to fetch their email. Once this begins, they see no more new mail, though the mail is in cur. Hello, I'm interested in trying the dovecot-lda with sieve support. What would be the proper way to test it? I'm currently using a Fedore core 2 server, with spamassassin and procmail. To get the same effect with dovecot-lda, would I put a line like this in my .forward? spamassassin|dovecot-lda I'm just guessing, so please correct me if im wrong. Hello, I recently had the problem, that an index was corrupt. Thus, messages haven't been listed (talking about POP3), but still remained in the filesystem. As there is no SEARCH-command in POP3, dovecot didn't notice that the index is corrupt and didn't rebuild it. The problem is, that a user can't delete messages through POP3 which aren't listed by dovecot. If the maildir size increases, the arrival of new messages will be blocked because the mailbox is full. And the user has no chance to delete it. Regards Marten

[Dovecot] Blank lines in mailboxes

Hello, we use dovecot on a regular basis. Sometimes I end up with a user telling me he does not get mail. When I look after the problem, I always find leading blank lines in the mbox file. We are using postfix with dovecot and amavisd as spam scanner. Amavisd never accesses the mbox files directly so this can be ruled out. I suspected procmail but now it happened also with accounts where no procmail is active. I found only a list thread where this happened always, i.e. it was a configuration error. (Meaning the mailbox was correct but dovecot would not read it). Here ist is only occasionally and therefore hard to track . Does anybody have the same problem or has hints to a solution ? We are running postfix 2.1.4 and dc 0.99.10.6 ; just now I am upgrading to pf 2.2.2. and dc 0.99.14. Yours, Jakob Curdes

[Dovecot] Fresh Dovecot Install

Working on an RH9 box. Did not use yum. Downloaded the "dovecot-stable-latest.tar.gz". Uncompressed it, downloaded and installed gcc. Ran the following: ./configure make sudo make install Seemed to have done its thing. I'll admit I am not well versed in using "make" or compiling anything. When I install I usually use yum on fedora machines. This one being an RH9 machine I have plugged yum into the fedora legacy project and it did not let me install dovecot via yum. So I opted for this route. Regardless, if I run 'which dovecot' I see "/usr/local/sbin/dovecot" However now I do not seem to be able to see it run. I get nothing when I: rpm -qa | grep dovecot ps aux | grep dovecot service dovecot status SO AM HAVE MISSED SOMETHING! Is there another script I need to run? Suggestions welcome. Thanks, George

[Dovecot] dovecot 0.99.xx to 1.0-stable how-to?

I realize that there have been some big changes in features and configuration file settings between 0.99.xx and 1.0-stable, so when I went to perform an upgrade on our testing server, I carefully combed through the configuration files and matched up everything I could. I fired up dovecot-1.0-stable and was pleased to see that it was happily running. I attempted to connect to it, and discovered that it wasn't listening to any ports.. then I realized that the app had crashed due to a typo in the config file (oops). Fixed that, started it up, and it was happily running and listening. However, it wouldn't authenticate any users.. Backing down to the 0.99.14 version that we had installed allowed for authentication (against ldap) to work just fine.. Is there anything that I should be looking for within the dovecot-1.0-stable that is dramatically different in regards to user authentication? -Rich

As for the code changes, from memory the UID checking stuff is all in the one place ( in 0.99.14 it seems to be src/lib/restrict-access.c ). I'm not sure about 1.0... we'll move to that when we can have custom flags :) -- Curtis

Hello, I am migrating one server to dovecot. The only problem is, that users have logins with @domain as part of their user name. I want to use pam auth (for other reasons, if only for dovecot, I would use mysql, but I need the same password db to be used for other services, like samba). Is there a way to allow this type of login? Just cut everything beginning with @. I can change the source code, but then I don't get nice automatic upgrades. Or can this be done easily with PAM? [Dovecot] Shared mailboxes and accessing MailDir not through IMAP

Hello, I'm testing Dovecot that is part of Debian/sarge (v0.99.14-1). So far so good. I have migrated some mailboxes for testing with success and seems that everything works fine. One thing I do not figure out is, what to do about shared mailboxes, which are the very reason of searching for an alternative IMAP server, The Wiki states that there is some sort of shared mailboxes, based upon symlinks. Well, but since which version actually?? The Changelog stops at 2003-11-08 21:12 ? What I need is a mailbox (maildir) for a contact address (not a real shared mailbox, but several users shall be able to read a mail and delete it after processing). For this, one needs write permission to the mails therein only, the MDA takes care of to make the mails readable for the group. It would be good to see, if somebody had answered a mail already, but that's not required. What I tried is this: I setup all Unix-permissions of the folders (. cur new tmp: u=rwx,g=srwx) and their parents (u=rwx,g=x). Then I placed a symlink into the maildir of all users. Each user caches the INDEXes into an individual /var/ directory, not in the maildirs themselves. (BTW: I wonder why I need to give the group write permission to the base directory '.'). The mailbox shows up and is read-write. Now I wonder, what impact I'm to expect here? Esp. "The only problem is that currently everyone's message flags would be shared as well." (quote from a message of a thread taken from the Wiki) Then there is http://dovecot.org/pipermail/dovecot/2003-March/001113.html the third item will apply to my situation, I guess. MailDir is (sort of) expected to be read by mutt directly, for instance. Because the mailboxes are located within the users home directories, some of them do this. Do this item mean that Dovecot is NOT expecting that mails are deleted in any other way than through itself? Otherwise Dovecot would find a change in the mailbox and rebuilt the index file regardless whether the change had been originated by another IMAP client or by directly manipulating the maildir. [Dovecot] local users + virtual domains

I'm redesigning our mail server which holds several hundred mailboxes - most are local system users and some are virtual domains that we host. I understand that the 1.0x stable release allows for multiple auth mechinisms, so that I could use both PAM for local users and a passwd-file for the virtuals. If I want to stick with 0.99x can I mix and match in a single passwd-file the username/passwd for both local and virtual users? Greetings Running Fedora Core 3 and dovecot-0.99.13-3.FC3 as a production mail server for around 30+ accounts. A couple of times a day dovecot just stops. Nothing in the mail log except for Apr 26 00:48:19 sydsrv05 imap-login: Can't connect to auth process at default: Connection refused It's got to the point that I have put a script into cron.hourly to restart the dovecot service every hour. Any suggestions where to start looking please? First off I've just got to say thanks. We just upgraded from UW to Dovecot migrating from mbox to maildir. Wow, what a difference! Load average used to hang around 5.0 during business hours and could get up to 20+ on a bad day. Now we rarely break 1.0! I'm wondering if there's a way to keep track of the last time a user checked their email and whether they checked it using POP or IMAP. We're trying to gather statistics on what protocols our users use and find accounts that haven't been checked for a long time. We used to be able to do some of this with the finger command and the user's mbox. I found a script called "mfinger" that works better with Maildir, but it's designed for Courier. Any ideas? Thanks!

[Dovecot] Why is "UIDVALIDITY changed" fatal?

I've got several users testing Dovecot IMAP at the moment, but some of them are also accessing their mail via UW-IMAP at other times. (I've warned them about accessing the same folder simultaneously via UW-IMAP and Dovecot!) In addition, we have special folders "AutoSpam" and "Trash" that pruned using Washington's "mailutil" automatically every so often. Of course, Dovecot's indexes will become invalid in such cases, but they seem to get rebuilt automatically OK. However, in some cases UW-IMAP seems to change the UIDVALIDITY value (not sure why!) and when Dovecot tries to sync it notices this and gives up with a fatal error on opening that folder. Opening the folder a second time is then OK. I was wondering why Dovecot can't just rebuild the indexes silently in such cases (which seems to be done by returning "0" from the mbox_sync_loop() routine)? Hi Perhaps I've been going too far OT in my previous thread or perhaps I just didn't explain my problem clear enough so forgive me for trying again. I have configured fetchmail to fetch my mail from my ISP's POP3-server. hi, i'd like to use dovecot to authenticate from ldap. in ldap each user has it's uniq uid and gid. unfortunately with postfix we can't use uniq uid/gid since in this case we have ot create all user's home in advance. so we decided to use uniq uid and a common gid in postfix since in this case postfix can create new users maildir and deliver new mails. so i'd like to use everyone's own uid in dovecot, but a common gid (same as in postfix). but how can i do so? i read the wiki, but the problem is if i use: auth_userdb = ldap /etc/dovecot-ldap.conf then i have to define ldap attrib name in dovecot-ldap.conf: user_attrs = mail,,,uid,uidNumber,gidNumber what should i use in the last field in user_attrs? or it's not possible with dovecot to define this? i'd be very said in this case:-( any advice? thanks in advance. yours. -- Levente "Si vis pacem para bellum!"

Hello, I'd really like to define the finale libexecdir and localstatedir through the configure-script. But the Makefiles are rewriting them. Not $libexecdir is used, but $pkglibexecdir. And $pkglibexecdir is always defined as $libexecdir/dovecot. But I don't want this trailing "/dovecot". Same with localstatedir. I want dovecot to use a certain path. But to this path, a "run/dovecot" is appended. I surely could build some patchfiles to change the Makefiles. But it would be easier, if you could add a new directive --pgklibexecdir to the configure-script. I don't know where the "run/dovecot" is defined, but it would also be very fine to set it in the configure-script (specially when upgrading to new releases) instead of defining them all in the dovecot.conf (base_dir, login_dir). Changes: - LDAP authentication should work finally? - Some header lookup fixes that should fix sort/threading issues - Don't crash with 0-byte size mboxes - Transaction log fixes. Also rotate .log file to .log.2 file, allowing more history and less "transaction log file lost" messages. - SEARCHing multiple headers might have crashed - mbox: When first message was expunged we might have gotten "uid-last unexpectedly lost" errors. - recent flag counter wasn't updated in index file header always even if the recent flags were removed - UIDVALIDITY changes are handled more transparently - Added --rundir configure option (not actually tested, does it work? :) - etc.

Hi, surely it can't and it shouldn't. I'm just wondering why a check for "INBOX" is done in src/imap/cmd-delete.c AND src/lib-storage/index/maildir/maildir-storage.c. The first is clear because it gives an imap-error to the client. But for which case is the check in maildir-sorage.c? Just to be absolutely sure? The reason for me to ask is, because I need to disable deletions for five folders: Drafts, Infected, Junk, Sent and Trash. A certain webmail-interface and spamfilter will rely on these folders, so nobody shall be able to delete or rename them. First I placed the checks in cmd-delete.c. Should I place them in maildir-storage.c additionally? In normal circumstance, the check in maildir-storage.c should never be reached, right? Regards Marten

I'm mainly just curious, but what version of dovecot is considered to be stable enough to be running in a production environment? We're running the 0.99.13 version shipped with FC3 and, while experiencing great performance gains over UW-IMAP, we have hit a couple of snags here and there (random and infrequent characters at the beginning of a mailbox, periodic duplication of a message here and there, etc). I figure we should upgrade to something a bit more current, but I am not sure what the "recommended" verion would be.. Also, perhaps more important, what's the roadmap to getting 1.0 finalized? What's the timeframe? :-) -Rich

With the API changes committed today to CVS, it's now much easier to write plugins that modify mail-storage behavior. So, I finally fixed my half-working quota plugin that had been lying there for a while. It implements the RFC2087 quota commands for IMAP, a generic quota API that should allow pretty much any kind of quota implementation, and the actual quota limit checking for saving and copying mails. As an example there's an implementation which just scans through all files in a directory and sums their sizes. Currently it can be made to work only when starting from command line, eg.: export QUOTA=~/mail:storage=1024 export MODULE_DIR=/usr/local/lib/dovecot/imap ./imap The QUOTA variable is passed to the quota implementation. In this case quota-dirsize reads it, figures out that ~/mail is the directory where to count the files, and 1024kB is the maximum for quota. I think I'll change the master process code so that any unrecognized varibles that come from userdb are fed to imap/pop3 processes. That way you could simply make the userdb return the quota value (and set other user-specific settings as well). Maybe the core implementation should be built into Dovecot, while the different quota implementations would be plugins? ..And even better would be if Dovecot's build process was modified so that it's possible to specify with configure script what to compile in and what to compile as plugins.. [Dovecot] File isn't in mbox format - Couldn't open INBOX

While I saw another thread on the list similar to the issue I was experiencing (http://dovecot.org/pipermail/dovecot/2005-February/006168.html) I was wondering if there was a way around this problem (the thread simply suggested upgrading, but are the later version (specifically the 1.0-test releases) ready for prime time?)... We're periodically having this with some users (not sure what client they are using, but I am pretty sure it is MS Outlook) where the inbox is in near perfect shape except for some extra characters at the beginning of the file. POP or IMAP delivery fails with an error stating "File isn't in mbox format - Couldn't open INBOX". It looks like those characters are of a previous message that was not completely removed from the file, and those characters seem to throw everything out of wack.. It's easily correctable by removing the bogus characters from the beginning of the file, but that gets annoying quickly.. -Rich

Hi I would like to set up a local mailserver but I'm getting lost with all the available options. As I have already decided to use dovecot I hope someone here will be able to point me to the right docs/HOWTO's/... Here's my wish-list: 1) download mail from my ISP's POP3-server 2) scan with spamassassin 3) scan with ClamAV 4) filter messages (mailing lists/sender/...) 5) store messages in dovecot 6) be able to read messages on my desktop (where all of the above will be running) and on my laptop 7) be able to send messages (currently using evolution) from both my desktop and laptop so sent messages are stored in dovecot (the idea is to be able to see all sent messages on both PC's) I have already created a test-account om my ISP's POP3-server, installed and configured fetchmail and dovecot. Exim has been installed as well but I haven't touched it's configuration yet. Running fetchmail manually collects the mail and stores it in /var/mail/m8ram where dovecot finds it. So I would like to know (how to find out) how I can achieve 2), 3), 4) and 7). I have looked around and have discovered that there are many programs that can do some or all of this. But I haven't been able to figure out how to get them to work with dovecot. e.g. I don't understand what I would have to change to dovecot's config if exim or procmail or whatever moves certain messages to different folders (or even where these folders would be created). Perhaps I'm missing a HOWTO that explains all this, if so please let me know. Well, I just built and installed the 1.0 stable w/o tags version from source, and so far, it's not hanging/crashing the system - if this is the fix, I'm all over it :D Context: this is my problem: Correction: I'm running yum.log:03/07/05 05:48:28 Updated: dovecot 0.99.14-1.1.fc2.rf.i386 - Sorry about that. I'm a bit befuddled by this behavior. I've been using dovecot for close to a year, and recently the Fedora Core 2 Update: dovecot-0.99.13-4.FC2 build came in via yum. Since then I occasionally get this EXPUNGE disconnect error. When the error hits, the box does not crash but I can no longer log in*, nor start any new processes. I happen to have gkrellm running and I see a slow but steady climb in the # of processess. The only way to recover the box is to do a hard reset, as I cannot log in, nor su - to do a shutdown. In one case I happened to have a root shell open, and I still could not do a shutdown. Any ideas as to what I should do with this? As long as I don't expung everything is fine, but when I do expunge (move something or a filter runs in squirrelmail, or Action/Expunge in Evolution) sometimes it works fine, sometimes I get this error and a weird zombie state. It was all rock solid before this new version. Suggestions welcome - I don't seem to be getting any logging when it goes bad, perhaps I can up the log level? I'm more then happy to build the current dovecot from source, and if I should post this to some Fedora list, point me at it :D

I also placed dovecot-lda-0.1.tar.gz in http://dovecot.org/test/. It's also in dovecot-lda module in CVS. It's based on the same deliver binary that exists in Dovecot's sources, but I've also plugged in CMU Sieve (mostly because it was the easiest one to plug in). The code could be much prettier, but it works anyway :) I think at some point I'm going to try to make the Sieve stuff a plugin on top of the normal delivery binary. (Dovecot in general should have some pretty plugin architecture, so you could just unpack them in some directory then do ./configure --with-builtin-plugins=quota-maildir,lda-sieve --with-external-plugins=sql,ldap,quota-sql) configure needs --with-dovecot=../dovecot-1.0-test68 option. So, usage goes like I mentioned in my previous mail (uhm. should put it into README): http://dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2005-March/006512.html Sieve script is assumed to be in ~/.dovecot.sieve file. It's automatically compiled to ~/.dovecot.sievec whenever timestamp changes. If it doesn't exist, mail is stored normally into INBOX.

Hi! Have anyone successed with hp-ux (how) ? I've compiled 0.99.14 with gcc-3.4.3 at hpux 11.11. I can telnet to port 143 and connection stays up, but I don't get any response back. It seems like dovecot "doesn't see" what I type in telnet. Hello Timo, your patch introducing pass_attr_names and user_attr_names fixed the problem of the 'shared' attr_names member of [passdb|userdb]_ldap_conn as I answered in the relative thread. Now I think there is a problem while comparing user-provided and ldap-provided passwords causing a false 'password mismatch' situation, while using PLAIN mechanism with LDAP authentication. As a matter of fact, the user provided by the user, as read in the 'mech_plain_auth_continue' function is passed as an argument in the 'auth_request_verify_plain' function which, in turns pass it to the function pointed to by 'passdb->verify_plain' (that is 'ldap_verify_plain') which doesn't use it [instead maybe of setting the 'passdb_ldap_request' 'password' field with it ?]. So once back from the LDAP request, when in 'handle_request' we call 'password_verify', the password we try to match against the one read in the LDAP db is null. Did I get it right ? So I now am able to log into dovecot, authenticate but I can't see anything. Every command after login says NO error or the really cryptic just plain 'NO' I am authenticating through vpopmail and the mail users are in /home/vpopmail the dir is owned vpopmail:vchkpw and are drwx------ do I need to change something there? Hello, I'm a bit afraid of users, the might slow down the server because of search requests to the imap-server on very large mailboxes. Even with a performant index, this could cause a lot of cpu and i/o-load. Is it possible to include the login-name in the imap process, so that a "ps ax" doesn't just give "imap", but e.g. "imap test(a)example.com"? Maybe it's of general interest to see in the title at which stage an imap-process is working. Regards Marten

[Dovecot] creating subfolders without preceding inbox wanted?

Hello, today I accidentally created a subfolder "Trash" instead of INBOX.Trash. No error was given, the creation lead to the folder ".Trash". If I know this folder, I can also select it. But a "list * * " doesn't show the Trash folder. How could I ever find this folder by the imap-procotol if I don't know it's name? Is this the correct behaviour? Or shouldn't imap simply disallow the creation of such folders, but only with preceding "INBOX."? Regards Marten

I have built Dovecot 1.0 test 67 under MACOSX. But I can not find any tutorial on how to setup it. Please allow me to explain my need. I want to setup a local imap server, and then import all my email from Mail.app and Gnus into it. Thus I can choose to read emails with any client. It's only a single user environment. When I create a user on LDAP I don't create maildir too. So if I log-in with dovecot (143,110) I hope dovecot creates maildir for users but this is not I get: maildir are not created... dovecot.conf .... default_mail_env = maildir:/var/vmail/%d/%n/Maildir .... Hi, With some POP3 servers, when you login more than once, the POP3 server says "Err: multiple login". How can I achieve that with dovecot ? For example: I login to my POP account that is hosted by the ISP: $ telnet pop.x.com 110 Trying x.x.x.x... Connected to pop.x.com (x.x.x.x). [Dovecot] message status changed from new to old on read

Hi. I'm new to IMAP, but just tried uw-imapd and then dovecot in conjuction with offlineimap. I'm using Debian package version 0.99.14-1 and have my mail in mbox format. One of the first things that annoys me about both programs is that as soon as you read a mailbox over imap, the imapd changes all "new" messages to "old". It seems to have the assumption that the IMAP client is "reading" the messages, but particularly in the case of offlineimap, this assumption is not justified: I might not read the message on the client on which I've just synced, I might read it on the server or another client. So I would like dovecot to leave the mailbox alone, and leave it up to the client to write any changes to message status. Is there any option to dovecot that would accomplish this? While experimenting, I noticed that dovecot sometimes doesn't notice changes to the status made directly on the server. For example, if I create new mbox mailbox with one message (initially "new"), and access it with imap (using mutt in this example), it shows up "new" in the client. When I next access it with imap, it shows up "old", because dovecot modified the status as described above. If I then run mutt directly on the mailbox and change the status back to "new", then access it with imap, it still shows up "old". If I then remove the .imap directory containing the caches, it is back to "new". I assume that dovecot is supposed to pick up changes made directly on the server, right? Thanks for your help, Andrew

Hello, I'm using dovecot-0.99.14, and I wonder if anyone has created patch for *minimal* Maildir++ support. By minimal Maildir++ support, I mean the following: (1) New messages created by dovecot will include the ,S=nnnnn string in the unique identifier so that Maildir++ clients don't have to stat the file to know the size. (2) Dovecot will append to the maildirsize file when a message is deleted or added. If maildirsize gets larger than the 5120 limit, then just delete it and let someone else recalculate the quota. My goal isn't full Maildir++ support in dovecot, but just to make it play nicely with my Maildir++ aware delivery agent. (If someone has full Maildir++ support, I'd be glad for that too!) If what I describe above doesn't exist, I am interested in paying someone to make this quick patch. E-mail me off list if you are interested. Thanks, David

[Dovecot] dovecot ssl problem

Hi there, I am having a weird problem with dovecot and ssl. If I am accessing the dovecot imap server with for example sylpheed-claws or evolution, everything works fine. If it is accessed via windows either by outlook or thunderbird, we get occassional timeouts. It's working fine for a few hours, then for 5 to 20 minutes, every attempt to connect from the outside results in "Connection to server timed out". Added to that, the problem only arises, if a direct SSL connection to Port 993 is used. Using Sylpheed with STARTTLS to Port 143 from the outside works fine as well. It's not a firewall Problem, since port 993 and 143 are open, the config files have been checked over and over for 2 weeks and are good as well. Dovecot log says: imap-login: Apr 20 13:26:05 Warning: SSL_read() syscall failed: Connection timed out [83.104.224.142] Doing uber verbose output doesn't bring up any extended information, syslog stays clean as well. The Problem is not directly reproducable by a certain action, it just arises from time to time. There can be 3 working days without problems, or 6 timeouts > 20 minutes within one day. System is Debian Sarge unstable with a custom 2.6.10 Kernel. During the timeouts, mail is still received and put into the users mailboxes by exim, it's just that you cannot access the imap server for approx 20 minutes. [Dovecot] SORT using cached filesystem modtimes

Timo or anyone, This may be a bug or maybe a design decision. Either way I am curious to hear comments. Why do the dovecot-0.99.14 server's .imap.index files contain a cached copy of each message's date and time as supplied by the filesystem, as opposed to the date and time found in each message header? When testing various imap clients (eg. tbird-1.0.2, evolution-2.0, outlook2003, squirrelmail-1.4.4) I was intrigued by the behaviour of message date sorting. I toggled on/off the use of server side SORTing in some imap clients, then started forcing rebuilds of .map.index files, and eventually came to the above conclusion. For normal dovecot server side processing, this condition (if I am correct) may not be a problem, but if someone was to deposit a bunch of maildir files firstly into an imap account (bypassing dovecot), and if this person (eg. me) did not preserve the filesystem/inode file attributes. Then dovecot appears to cache the "wrong" data. What happens then is that some imap clients can display wrong date+times in the message lists, and some imap clients find that server side SORTing does not work. [Dovecot] Dovecot causing hanging on random folders...

I've been using the 1.0 test series (currently 1.0test 67 and before that 1.0-test59) and both exhibited this issue.. I use Thunderbird and will open one or two of my nested Maildir folders via imap and find that it goes out there trying to open the folder (according to the messages that Thunderbird claims) and it never comes back.. I've attached to the various dovecot processes to see what their doing and they appear to be waiting for things to do -- e.g. not working on anything in particular.. The only way to fix this is to quit Thunderbird and restart it.. I see this about 2-3 times a day.. I'd love to track it down.. I've seen this on Fedora Core 1 (i386 server) and also on a PPC Linux system running an older kernel (on a Buffalo Linkstation if you know what that is).. Hi, i'm using dovecot-1.0-stable. All my mail accounts are virtual accounts that come from pam with the following configuration in auth_default: passdb = pam userdb = static uid=5000 gid=5000 home=/var/mail/vhost/example.com/%n mail=/var/mail/vhost/example.com/%n for a user foo, if the directory /var/mail/vhost/example.com/foo already exists, then all is ok, but if the directory doesn't exists, it seems dovecot is unable to create it "on the fly". I get the following error message: Failed to create storage with data: /var/mail/vhost/example.com/foo i'm quite sure it is not a permission related problem (i made /var/mail/vhost/example.com world writable to be sure). I'm currently trying to understand the maildir code... But could someone tell me if the maildir directory should exist for dovecot to work ? In the case that the answer is yes, i would say in advance that it's a problem for sites hosting a lot of virtual users, since it means that these users must receive at least one mail for their mail account to work correctly (i use postfix as MTA, and if the user's maildir doesn't exist, postfix takes care of creating it). I'm not very fond of solutions with scripts taking care of creating users. Hi dovecot-0.99.11-1.FC3.4.i386.rpm on FC3 when i create a user account with pop3 email i find that if i don't send and email to the account (so that sendmail creates the file under /var/spool/mail/testuser) where "testuser" is the users username. If the user logs in with Outlook or Outlook express they get an error and maillog shows. I am using dovecot 0.99.13 and Evolution 2.0.2 on Fedora Core 3. [Dovecot] Upcoming configuration file changes

For those who might be interested. Comments welcome. A few weeks ago I had started redesigning how Dovecot handles configuration files. I wrote a new parser and converted dovecot-auth to use the new way. Today I finally managed to convert imap process as well, which wasn't that easy because I didn't want mbox/maildir-specific settings to be hardcoded in any common code. So, the changes will be: - Dovecot master process will need a new completely different configuration file which tells what processes to run and their uids/chroots/memory limits. Very much like Postfix's master.cf. I'm not sure about its format yet (suggestions welcome), but maybe something like it's already: process imap-login { executable = /usr/lib/dovecot/imap-login chroot = /var/run/dovecot/login uid = dovecot vsz_limit = 32M } ... Hopefully after these changes the master process will become very small and simple. - One of the processes will be a configuration process, which is the one that reads and parses the configuration for non-master processes. The default configuration file format will be pretty similar to what we have now, but it can of course be replaced with SQL backends and whatever. Config process will listen in some unix socket waiting for requests from other processes, which connect to it just after they start up and maybe also sometimes later (eg. to get user/IP-specific settings when a new client connects). - The data that config process sends and what other processes parse is based on simple key=value pairs, so it's possible to still store and parse them from environment if needed. Also it makes it possible to override settings from command line (eg. imap -o mail_debug=yes) or give user-specific settings in userdb. Here's an example: # config process reads something like: mmap_disable = yes namespace foo { type = private separator = / mbox { dir = ~/mail mbox_read_locks = dotlock } } # sends out: mmap_disable = yes namespaces = foo namespaces_foo_type = private namespaces_foo_separator = / namespaces_foo_mbox = 1 namespaces_foo_mbox_1_dir = ~/mail namespaces_foo_mbox_1_mbox_read_locks = dotlock - Config process should verify that all given settings are valid so that typos are noticed. This may not be that easy because the setting definitions are distributed all around the source code. I think there needs to be at least a (Perl) script that finds out all the setting definitions and writes them to some all-settings.c for config process so it knows them. Settings for plugins are more difficult though.. Should they somehow be marked in config file that they're plugins (plugin foo { .. })? Or maybe config process could dynamically load all the plugins itself and request their setting definitions?

[Dovecot] comparision with other imap servers and folder sharing

Some praise: Timo, I must say I am super impressed with this product. I do free support a few good friends with small businesses running Linux servers (a mix of RH9, Suse9.2 and gentoo) that I dropped as email and samba servers. I found UW-IMAP to be terrible in every way except that using mbox is sometimes nice for old s/w tools. No need for details re UW-IMAP problems. In early 2004 I found courier-imap to be vastly better behaved than UW-IMAP and also much faster once large folders were open. DJB's Maildirs seemed cool, and postfix likes them too, and mb2md-3.20.pl worked great . So everything seemed good and certainly was better. But courier cannot cope with large imap accounts (eg. millions of messages and a few GBytes) where courier-imap grinds to a halt on the initial folder scanning. Cyrus just looks like a big evil beast that needs too much time to learn. Four days ago, this lead me to dovecot. The performance, reliability, configurability of dovecot is amazing. Timo, I think you could give yourself more credit on something important when selling Dovecot. You write that Dovecot "does not support shared folders". This might turn away some people considering Dovecot. People whom like me do not have/want a good understanding of the imap protocol. I believe you mean that Dovecot does not support shared folders in the technical imap sense of shared namespaces between separate imap accounts. Since Dovecot works beautifully when sharing folders via logging in with the same username more than once. Plus your documentation and config notes imply that this is no problem. How can I configure the dovecot for working with maildir's through NFS? hi, anyone of you pls guide me what entries to put in nsswitch.conf for pam to work with krberse, i'm trying to authenticate users from AD, I thinks (my findings) pam.d/dovecot looks into /etc/nsswitch.conf for which passwd databases to use while authenticating a users. my krb setup is working fine I tested with "kinit username" and it authenticat to AD server. As 'passdb_ldap_conn' and 'userdb_ldap_conn' are of the 'ldap_connection' type and since the 'db_ldap_init' function returns the existing ldap connection if it exists, the 'passdb_ldap_preinit' and 'usedb_ldap_preinit' will call the 'db_ldap_set_attrs' function on _the same_ 'ldap_connection' object. - So when the 'db_ldap_search' function is called from the 'passdb-ldap.c:ldap_lookup_pass function, the 5th argument (passdb_ldap_conn->attr_names) will point to the 'user_attrs' instead of the 'pass_attrs', since userdb_preinit will have already been called. - I've also noticed the use of the 'attr_map' hash to store the attribute/value pairs, but since it doesn't seems to be used when calling 'ldap_lookup_pass', I guess the problem is somewhere else. Can someone give me a clue ? [Dovecot] Syslog, Dovecot, and LogWatch

At what level does Dovecot log to syslog? UW-IMAP uses local6.debug to log to syslog, but it doesn't seem that dovecot does the same.. (the file I defined for UW-IMAP's output hasn't received anything since I moved over to Dovecot? Also, has anyone managed to get LogWatch and Dovecot to play nicely together? I noticed that LogWatch no longer gives any statistics on the imap usage since I shut down UW and went full blast with Dovecot.. -Rich

[Dovecot] Index(?) problem under OpenBSD

Hi, My apologies if this has been mentioned before, I haven't pulled up a google search yet. I run Dovecot from the package under OpenBSD 3.6 (dovecot-0.99.10.8). The problem I have is that occasionally dovecot corrupts an index file (I think), which causes the process to gradually creep up in usage, until it hits 99%, where it stays, without quitting. If I then fire up my mail client later on, it does the same thing. Doing this two or three times results in 3 processes, all at 33%, and a load of 100 on the server. The problem is resolved by deleting all the index files in my Maildir. If this doesn't solve the problem, then duplicating my Maildir and using the new copy, after deleting all the index files, fixes the problem. But these only work for a while, and the problem rears it's head with other users as well, so I need a fix. Has anybody else suffered this problem? Is there a fix in a more recent version? Is it OpenBSD specific? What can I do to help diagnose the problem? Should I turn of indexes? Upgrade to the latest version? [Dovecot] Namespace prefix not ending with separator

I'm still battling my way through using hidden namespaces to hide the change from UW-IMAP to Dovecot 1.0-stable from my users. The latest problem is that some (probably many) users have their IMAP folder prefix set to "~/mail" rather than "~/mail/". I have hidden namespaces with prefixes "~/mail/", "~%u/mail/" and "mail/". LIST "~/mail" "*" returns nothing, so I've tried adding another namespace for "~/mail". Now LIST "~/mail" "*" returns * LIST (\NoInferiors \UnMarked) "/" "~/mailtest1/test1-2" * LIST (\NoInferiors \UnMarked) "/" "~/mailtest2" * LIST (\NoInferiors \UnMarked) "/" "~/mailtest3" whereas UW-IMAP returns * LIST (\NoInferiors \UnMarked) "/" ~/mail/test1/test1-2 * LIST (\NoInferiors \UnMarked) "/" ~/mail/test2 * LIST (\NoInferiors \UnMarked) "/" ~/mail/test3 I wonder whether LIST should insert an extra namespace separator in such cases? [Dovecot] imap segfault in mail-index-sync.c

Our support team seems to have caused another crash. They treat this mailbox like a shared one, so there may be a few people accessing it at once. They are mostly using dovecot, but some could be using uw-imap. These are the only two ways that this box is accessed. I know that this doesn't really work with mbox, but it doesn't appear to corrupt the mailbox. It seems to be a good stress test... In this case, it looks like several of them are logged in at once. [Dovecot] Authentication and the wrong mailbox?

I just migrated from UW-imap to dovecot last night. After some tweaking of the dovecot.conf file, disabling xinetd's entries, firing up the dovecot daemon, and copying the .mailboxlist to .subscriptions for all users, things looked to be going just fine! I received a call this morning from a user stating that they had all of *my* emails in *their* inbox! They don't know when it happened as their machine POP's email off every 5-10 minutes or so, but we were able to isolate it to a 8hr period last night. Further investigation showed that at some time through the evening, dovecot freaked out during the authentication phase and for some bizzare reason, when the user connected via POP3, they were able to download all of my inbox! Additionally, by the time I was looking in to it, NO users could authenticate via dovecot, and, hence, no one had access to email. Restarting dovecot resolved the issue, but I have my doubts about it being truly resolved. I'm going to run some tests (what little I can think of), but this is the first time I have ever experienced a situation such as this. One thing for UW is that this situation never happened, and I've only had dovecot running for about 13hrs. I was trying to configure postfix, mysql with dovecot.
