Hi, ive come across what looks like a bug in how dovecot sorts the mail when sorting on subject. We noticed this on our current beta8 version, and I can also reproduce it in rc15. One of our customers has hundreds of emails with subjects like this: Subject: 20060823 Kanglaonline-NSCN(IM) cadres violating Tml truce: NSCN(K) Subject: 20060824 LSE - Shell jv denies 3.2 bln usd fraud claims by Nigerian parliament Subject: =?iso-8859-1?Q?20060824_Ibinda_-_Onze_militares_angolanos_mortos_em_comba?= Subject: =?iso-8859-1?Q?20060824_Gingaocultural=2C_VoA_-_Deputados_constatam_clima?= Some of the Subject lines are encoded, some arent. All the encoded Subject lines end up being sorted wrong. [Dovecot] Quota Display with Horde and LDAP

Hi All, I am using dovecot-1.0.rc15 wth LDAP authentication configured. My webmail is Horde/IMP. While logging in, Horde gives `Unable to retrieve quota' message, instead of the usage report. capability string is: OK [CAPABILITY IMAP4rev1 SASL-IR SORT THREAD=REFERENCES MULTIAPPEND UNSELECT LITERAL+ IDLE CHILDREN NAMESPACE LOGIN-REFERRALS AUTH=PLAIN] Dovecot ready. There is no QUOTA shown as part of capability, whereas courier-imap used to show it. I have uncommented the quota = maildir line in dovecot.conf. What about adding some compatibility for pre-rev1 IMAP4 clients which are still around (e.g., CDE dtmail, even in Solaris 10)? Especially, the understanding of command FETCH message (... RFC822.HEADER.LINES (parameters)) instead of FETCH message (... BODY.PEEK[HEADER.FIELDS (parameters)]) (with correspondingly changed replies) would be desirable and shouldn't be too difficult to implement.

i'm building dovecot-1.0.rc15 on osx. when i, ./configure --with-ssl=openssl --with-ssldir=/etc/ssl_certs --disable-static --enable-shared --disable-maintainer-mode --disable-ipv6 --with-mysql --with-sql-drivers=mysql --with-deliver --with-pop3d --with-storages=maildir,mbox --disable-debug it fails at, ... checking how to hardcode library paths into programs... immediate appending configuration tag "F77" to libtool ./configure: line 20184: AM_ICONV: command not found checking for strings.h... (cached) yes checking for stdint.h... (cached) yes ... checking whether va_lists can be copied by value... yes ./configure: line 26434: syntax error near unexpected token `SSL,' ./configure: line 26434: ` PKG_CHECK_MODULES(SSL, openssl)' i've checked the cvs co of the 1.0-branch, and the same problem exists. any help? thanks.

[Dovecot] quota question

I'm afraid I'm being a little confused by the whole quota setup with dovecot. I see references to quotas about, but I'm not certain how many of them apply to 1.0rc15. I currently have the conf setup as indicated on http://wiki.dovecot.org/Quota So, in my setup, I'm using Postfix, Maildrop and Dovecot. Mailstore is on NFS. Dovecot is handling the pop3 and imap connects. There seems to be some trouble in the quotas because Courier counts quota one way and Dovecot in a different way. Quotas are stored on a per user basis in the MySQL DB. The trouble I'm getting is that very frequently the quota being reported is quite different from reality. This leads to erroneous over quota delivery errors. So what is necessary to make sure the quotas work as they are supposed to in my environment? Ok, I found my problem, I run a backend IMAP/POP3 Server (DoveCot) with a front end IMAP/POP3 Proxy Server (DoveCot). I found that the proxy server was not advertising the fact that it supported QUOTA's. Once I enabled mail_plugins with quota support for the 2 protocols it all worked. Is this correct for a proxy server config. Hello. I'd like to know if there is a way to differ between imap and pop3 during mysql-auth. I would need the possibility to allow some users imap and only allow pop3 to the rest. Hey guys, Running rc15, I have maildir quotas working with deliver - however I seem to be unable to get the maildir quota ignore option to work. Am trying to ignore a user wide directory "Maildir/Filtered/", where detected virii/spam gets sorted to. Does deliver take notice of the maildir ignore option ? Applicable line from dovecot-sql.conf: user_query = SELECT CONCAT('/var/mailstore/',Domain,'/',Partition,'/',Email,'/') AS home, CONCAT('maildir:/var/mailstore/',Domain,'/',Partition,'/',Email,'/') AS mail, 5000 AS uid, 5000 AS gid, CONCAT('maildir:storage=10240:ignore=Filtered') AS quota FROM Mailbox WHERE Email = '%u' AND Status = '1' As a side note is there a configurable variable/template to set the "Your message was automatically rejected by Dovecot Mail Delivery Agent" messages. [Dovecot] maildirsize update error

According to [1], Trash is a reserverd folder name. When moving a message to it, maildirsize should be update with a negative byte count. If I move a message from any folder to Trash, maildirsize gets two lines, one positive and one negative. The problem is that a user can't move messages to Trash while being overquota because the positive entry goes before the negative. I'm using dovecot-1.0rc14. [Dovecot] convert_mail ?

I can't find much documentation on the convert_mail plugin. For example, on the wiki plugins page, clicking on convert goes to <http://wiki.dovecot.org/InterWiki> which is not relevant. Can I use convert_mail to migrate from UW IMAP 2002 mbox format where some mail is in ~/ and the inboxes are in /var/spool/mail? Will it know which files are mbox folders, so it doesn't try to convert other files in the home directories? When are the e-mails converted? Are the old files deleted? Is this configuration snippet valid? default_mail_env = maildir:~/Maildir convert_mail = mbox:~/:INBOX=/var/mail/%u If I can do that, it seems like an easy change. Andrew

[Dovecot] Performance Tuning Recommendations for Dovecot

Hi, I'm wondering if anyone has some performance tuning recommendations for Dovecot. We are currently building a series of department e-mail/imap servers and we will be replacing our central core in the coming summer. The department servers are relatively small 100-200 users and the central server is modest - around 7000 accounts. They will be using local filesystem or SAN for the backend storage. So far, enabling hard links seems to be a big win. I'm curious if there are others out there that people have found useful. I am considering putting the indexes on memory disks but I haven't scoped out the requirements for the central system yet (i.e. it is unclear to me how large the index will be for approximately 13 million messages take take up roughly 800GB of disk space. [Dovecot] Deliver bounces messages if can't write to logs

I am new to using Dovecot's LDA deliver. One particular item which I think may be improved.. If one uses logs instead of syslog and if Dovecot/Deliver can't write to the logs, mail is bounced. In contrast if it can't connect to the authentication socket auth-master, it defers. Shouldn't mail be deferred if access to the log files fails due to rights? Doesn defer makes more sense than to bounce in this case? In all likelihood it was postfix that bounced/deferred, but I believe it has to do with what response postfix got from deliver.

hey friends, I am running my company's mail server on FC3 which comprises of Postfix + Dovecot + MailScanner + Clamav + Squirrelmail + MailWatch + Spamassassin. I am using Dovecot 0.99.13-3 version on FC3 and I want to implement Quota limits for the users. I am using userdatabase as /etc/passwd file (auth_userdb = passwd ) and password database as pam(auth_passdb = pam) for dovecot. I read the documentation of dovecot but the quota example for /etc/passwd is missing. I want to have different quota limits for different users for example Quota limitation will depend upon the users, well there will be a global quota limit which will takes place if there is no limit specified for that particular user. Can anybody guide me how to configure quota's for different users in dovecot for /etc/passwd as userdatabase and pam as password database. Please let me know if you need any further inputs. Right now, trying to create folders with "/" or "." in their name can yield strange results, because Dovecot simply turns every occurrence of the current folder hierarchy separator in a folder name given by the client into a "." (or so it seems). If the folder separator isn't ".", clients can try to create folders with names containing ".", and Dovecot will convert those "." back to the folder separator on listing. It will look like there is an intermediate folder, but Dovecot is unaware of it. If the folder separator isn't "/", clients can try to create folders with names containing "/", which will simply fail. Judging from to http://www.courier-mta.org/?maildir.html, Courier encodes "." and "/" in the names of the directories the folders are stored as on disk. This means that that of "." and "/" that isn't the folder separator can be used in folder names, but it also means that Dovecot has to be able to perform the recoding. [Dovecot] Evolution: DATA command failed: Requested mail action aborted: exceeded storage allocation.

Hi Everyone, I have been recently getting these errors in Evolution 2.6.1. I think it is a client issue, as I don't see them using Thunderbird on the same machine (though I get a lot of "disconnected from servers" from Thunderbird. On Evolution 2.8.1 on another machine I haven't noticed these issues. DATA command failed: Requested mail action aborted: exceeded storage allocation. It seems that it happens when my sent messages are attempted to be stored on my IMAP sent folder on the server (running dovecot 1rc15, and OS X. [Dovecot] Deliver Root Setuid

Hi, I just configured my Postfix installation to deliver via Dovecot LDA. But because I use separate uids for virtual domains I had to set deliver to be setuid root. Altough I find this as frequent answer to this problem with deliver LDA I am not a 100% sure - basically because I try to avoid root setuids as much as I can. What should be better solution - to have all mailboxes with one owner or this setuid binary? My main reason for separate uids was filesystem quotas for whole domain. But my mail partition resides on XFS so I can do the same with directory quotas and I also noticed changes in quotas which should be also per domain in some next release or with patch. Do we really need to increase individual user maxfiles to >1024 ? Dovecot is set to 31768 so it is definately the user process here. Anything I can tweak in dovecot.conf to prevent this? Thanks!

[Dovecot] Dovecot hung or what?

Here is my first major problem with dovecot. I am running rc15 on FreeBSD 6.1. I run dovecot supervised by DJB's daemontools. I run only the pop3 service. A colleague informed me that pop3 service was simply not responding. They could not rcv mail. I just added auth caching with pam, and I'm getting this error: dovecot: [ID 107833 mail.error] auth(default): file passdb.c: line 178 (passdb_init): assertion failed: (passdb->passdb->default_pass_scheme != NULL || passdb->passdb->cache_key == NULL) A google search turns up <http://www.dovecot.org/list/dovecot-cvs/2005-March/004117.html> which looks approx like this except the assertion above is in passdb.c. Anyway, is this a known problem in 1.0.beta8? I've been reluctant to upgrade to the rc's due to all the problems. -frank

Hi All, We've been thinking a lot about the 2 different ways dovecot implements shares; namespaces and symlinks. We currently use the symlink version for our clients and they use the create_dovecot_shares.pl tool we did at: http://dovecot.org/tools/ Our idea is either in the namespace declaration or if a folder has a dovecot-shared file/symlink, have a ldap lookup defined in say, dovecot-ldap-shares.conf or dovecot-ldap.conf, that queries a dn and looks for memberUID or a group dn, then those uids/groups can get into the IMAP maildir. Obviously the original folder would need to be owned by some predefined user, e.g dovecot etc. Then it's just a simple matter of adding a new memberUID/group to the share listing. We can do a custom dovecot.schema if needed (for say a dovecotShare attribute etc.), as long as we get dovecot a Private Enterprise Number from: http://www.iana.org/cgi-bin/enterprise.pl If Timo hasn't already got one, but I can't see one in: http://www.iana.org/assignments/enterprise-numbers Thoughts? -- Kind Regards, Gavin Henry. I have some users that I will not allow to use POP3 thru my system, but force them to use webmail. An update on my problem dropping root group privileges. I discovered this is a problem for a user if they are in the system group (gid 0). If I remove the user from the system group, and leave them in their primary group, I don't see the error. Dovecot version: 1.0-0_33.rc15 built by atrpms Operating system: Redhat EL4 CPU architecture: x86 Filesystem you used: mailboxs via nfs to fileserver using xfs Just upgraded from 1.0-0_20.rc7 to 1.0-0_33.rc15 built by atrpms and we had previously set mbox_min_index_size to 1024 (1Mb) and now all mailboxes (mbox format) that are under this size are not able to be opened and throw an "Internal error occured. Refer to server log for more information." using either Thunderbird or Outlook Express, both of which are recent versions. The small mailboxes can be opened after turning mbox_min_index_size setting back to 0, at which time it creates indexes. There is nothing in the syslog file. I am looking in the right place as I can see the dovecot startup message. paul --

Thanks Timo! Since I've been running rc10 again dovecot stopped aborting. By the way, when I used the create_shares.pl script, it created a symlink for every file in the directory to be shared. Simple symlinking the dir seemed to 'almost' work but for the keyword file errors. Upgrading to rc15 fixes the problem as well, the Permission Denied message still comes up, but dovecot no longer aborts. Will try the create_shares.pl script again and see where my symlink-config is wrong. FWIW I wouldn't want any undocumented behaviour in dovecot just because I'm a stupid twat... Kind regards, Spil. [Dovecot] Problem with rc10, perhaps 11-15

I don't recall if I mentioned this on the list, but when you are configured with mbox format, and a user has no Dovecot index files yet, and the config is such that mbox_min_index_size is set to non-zero, non-default (128 in my test case), dovecot deliver fails. Commenting out "mbox_min_index_size" fixed the problem, and the indexes then get created. This problems exists in RC10 -- I'm mentioned this in case it still exists in the latest revs so it can get fixed before release. -- Steven F. [Dovecot] IMAPS works, IMAP does not

Hello! I have a simple (I think) problem. I have had IMAPS working fine for a long time. Now I want to start to use IMAP and STARTLS, since my mobile SonyEricsson P900 can't use IMAPS directly. But I can't connect even locally to the IMAP port (143), no-one listens there according to netstat (*.imaps is in LISTEN state). I have the following settings in my /etc/dovecot.conf: protocols = imap imaps ssl_cert_file = /etc/ssl/dovecotcert.pem ssl_key_file = /etc/ssl/private/dovecot.pem disable_plaintext_auth = no login_user = _dovecot login_greeting = Dovecot@casiopea ready. mail_read_mmaped = yes mmap_no_write = no protocol imap { login_greeting_capability = yes } protocol pop3 { } auth_verbose = yes auth default { mechanisms = cram-md5 digest-md5 passdb passwd { } userdb passwd { } user = root } I have restarted (SIGTERM) dovecot to be sure that dovecot is restarted. [Dovecot] shared folder

The dovecot wiki says: The only way to implement shared folders with Dovecot 0.99.x is to create a "shared userid" which all of the users log in to read mail. Does this mean that folders owned by that shared uid can be *simultaneously* manipulated by multiple users logged in to that shared uid? This doesnt seem to be the case on my dovecot-0.99.11-4.EL4 system, and before investigating further I just wanted to check whether it should be possible or not. Cheers, Terry.

[Dovecot] Nested folders in FS supported yet?

The last time I checked, dovecot didn't support having nested IMAP folders be implemented via actual nested maildir folders in the filesystem, but that feature was on the "someday maybe it'll happen list", IIRC. I can't find any recent mention of that feature or its absence on the web or in the list archives; is it still on the someday list? (If it isn't implemented yet, does anyone know of an IMAP server that DOES support it?) [Dovecot] Heimdal & gssapi.h

I've had some trouble compiling GSSAPI on SuSE Enterprise 9 using Heimdal. It turns out that this installation has /usr/include/heimdal/gssapi.h rather than gssapi/gssapi.h. krb5-config correctly sets -I/usr/include/heimdal in the CFLAGS. Looking back, there was a similar issue a few months ago:- http://www.dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2006-July/014945.html I'm a complete newbie to autotools but here's my attempt at a patch inspired by http://ximbiot.com/cvs/cvshome/dev/patches/gss - which I Googled for ;) I was hampered by the version of aclocal (and possibly the rest of autotools) being out-of-date on SuSE Enterprise 9 ... Hello, I tried to compile dovecot rc15 from the sources with the quota-rewrite patch (http://dovecot.org/patches/1.0/quota-rewrite.diff) on FreeBSD 6.1, but the compilation stop with the following errors. I am not very good in coding, so if you could fix the patch for FreeBSD it will be great. [Dovecot] Can't remove folder

Hello, Here is a 'me too' somewhat like: http://www.dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2006-January/010759.html Example scenario: /u/username/Mail/subfolder/somebox subfolder is a directory somebox is a mbox When I use Thunderbird's "Delete folder" function on the somebox the message appears: "Target mailbox doesn't allow inferiour mailboxes". Thunderbird, by default, tries to move it to Trash instead of deleting it directly. When I change the preference to "Remove it immediately" it works. Which component is at fault here: - limitation of a mbox only setup? - thunderbird should know - limitation of the imap protocol to advice the client it's mbox backed - feature of dovecot, could it be fixed or worked around somehow -- Leroy
