[Dovecot] fetchmail can't talk to dovecot

Hello, I have dovecot q1.0-0_22.rc7 up and running on a server: I can read email from squirrelmail just fine. When I try to download email with fetchmail, however, I get the result below. Why is that happening? In dovecot.conf I have: protocols = imap imaps pop3, so why should pop3 or imap fail? Where should I look? I have done this and that seems to have taken care of the malloc failure. [Dovecot] Passdb passwd on FreeBSD

I am trying to use dovecot for both virtual and local pop3 mailboxes. When I try to access a local account, I get an "unknown user" reject from 'passdb sql', as expected. However, I also get a reject from 'passdb pam' with the message: dovecot: auth(default_with_listener): pam(username(a)domain.tld,###.###.###.###): pam_authenticate() failed: authentication error. Is this because it is trying to authenticate username(a)domain.tld instead of just username? What can I do about it? Although I have a block for 'passdb passwd' following the 'passdb pam' block, there is nothing in the log. Why is this, I wonder? Any help to point me in the right direction will be appreciated. [Dovecot] Quota plugin rewrite

Backported from CVS HEAD to branch_1_0. You can get it as a patch from http://dovecot.org/patches/1.0/quota-rewrite.diff New features include support for multiple quota roots, so you could have eg. per-user quota and a larger domain quota (although no backend actually supports this yet..). The more important feature is that you can configure specific mailboxes to have a bit more space available for them, such as Trash or Spam. The configuration has also changed. Normally you'd use something like this: quota = maildir # 1GB quota in general quota_rule = *:storage=1048576 # Trash mailbox gets 100MB more (so max. 1,1GB) quota_rule2 = Trash:storage=102400 # Spam mailbox gets also +100MB (still maxes at 1,1GB, not 1,2GB) quota_rule3 = Spam:storage=102400 You can place all the above into plugin { .. } section in dovecot.conf. In userdb if users have different quotas you'd then need to override only quota_rule (not quota, quota_rule2 and quota_rule3). I tested quickly that this seemed to work as described above. Please test and report. :)

[Dovecot] LDA and chroot

Hi, I'd like to ask: is it possible to use Dovecot's LDA with mail_chroot variable set, e.g. "mail_chroot = /serv/storage19/vmail"? Without "mail_chroot" set all works fine. If mail_chroot is set and user database contains relative paths to home directory (without chroot part like "domain.net/user") deliver ignores this and tries to work at real root, while imap and pop3 processes founds home directory correctly. If users database contains full paths deliver works correctly, but imap/pop3 processes tries to access chroot directory + full path (and fails). Home directory in form "/chroot/path/./domain.net/user" solves the problem..., but as I understand, it is jut form to override default. Thus I can't find a way to correctly set default chroot path. i'm tired of dealing with buggy clients so i'm moving more processing into the server-side. i configured procmail as LDA with maildir-style mailboxes. i would like to simulate an automatic "mark as read" feature during procmail processing. simplest way looks to be forcing delivery directly to Maildir/cur instead of Maildir/new, but i suspect this may screw up dovecot. will this work? is there another (better) method? -SM-

hello some times ago I posted some patches to workaround vmailmgr not fitting into dovecot's passdb-checkpassword authentication module. Yesterday I spent some spare time for carrying out a cleaner solution for this problem. Check out these patches. If you're not interested in merging them, I will make them available at the same page I used for the former solution [ http://mij.oltrelinux.com/net/dovecot-qmail-vmailmgr ]; there were some 20 people/month that checked it out. This is a brief explanation of the patches: The root of all evil is that the checkpassword interface [ http://cr.yp.to/checkpwd/interface.html ] leaves room to interpretation when the scope is not system login. Vmailmgr and vpopmail, for example, collapse many mail users on the same system account. So, what "home" is here is not specified. In the case of vmailmgr, it's "checkvpw" sets HOME to the system user's home, and returns the path of the actual mail user differently. The solution I applied for this problem is to generalize the process that fetches authentication data (what currently is "checkpassword- reply"). I was set up for a specific passdb-vmailmgr module, but this would have seen a lot of code replication. Similarly (but I did not inspect further), I guess vpopmail can fit in this solution as well. So 1) provide a module "vmailmgr-reply", with the same behavior as checkpassword-reply, that's aware of the way checkvpw returns accounting information and pass this back to dovecot transparently so, this patch ships vmailmgr-reply along with checkpassword-reply (name them "fetcher"s for brevity) The idea is that every checkpassword-compatible module may have its own fetcher for passing correct info back to dovecot. Now with this generalization, the user must be able to specify if its checkpassword module needs a custom fetcher, and if it does, what's its path. So 2) modify auth/passdb-checkpassword.c and pump "args =". By default it takes the path of the checkpassword module (e.g. "checkvpw"), now it can be appended another field, that is the path of the custom fetcher. If this optional is omitted, the default checkpassword-reply will be used, and the cp module is supposed to behave like dovecot expects from it. Otherwise, a comma appear after the first path. e.g. passdb checkpassword { args = /xyz/checkvpw,/libexec/vmailmgr-reply } if one needs to specify paths with commas in the first one, commas can be escaped with \ (eg args=first\,path,second_path) Last but not least, the patch addresses again the problem with colons in paths. Currently, dovecot dictates no colons can exist in mailbox path names. In UNIX, no such constraint exist. Moreover, paths with colons are common when working specifically with qmail (see dot-qmail). When dovecot encounters ':', it truncates the path. This way, for example, if the authentication module returned home "/ path/name:surname", dovecot will truncante it to "/path/name". If name exist, name:surname will browse his mail without effort. All this comes from dovecot parsing params on MAIL environment (INDEX, INBOX, CONTROL), but it also happens if none of them was actually specified. So 3) modify lib-storage/index/maildir/maildir-storage.c for fixing the parsing problem with the mail environment. [ I did not provide the same fix for the remaining storages, but this can easily be done by copy/paste if convenient ]. For simplification and without loss of generality, this fix mandates ":INBOX=", ":INDEX=" and ":CONTROL=" params to follow in this order, if they appear. [ a minor patch agains auth/Makefile.am is provided for including vmailmgr-reply when building the rest of the auth stuff ] Any comment on this is welcome for discussion. bye

After commenting out the "passdb pam" section and uncommenting "passdb ldap", with the "args = /etc/dovecot-ldap.conf", the syslog messages went completely away, and everything continued to work. Delivery is handled by the MTA. Dovecot just needs to know where to access it. By default, for example, with Sendmail, it will place the email in /var/spool/mail (unless you change some back-end code somewhere along the line), and then you can use procmail (with a global procmailrc file in /etc) to place the mail where you want it to go.. I haven't used UW-IMAP in a while now (well over a year and a half). I stopped using it at all of my supported sites because, even though it was simple to manage, it was just way too slow. From what I remember, the UW implementation is such that UW-IMAP will read from the user's mbox file if it exists, and if it doesn't, it will read from <spooldir>/<username> (in this case, /var/spool/mail/user). UW-IMAP (or any IMAP) wouldn't actually do the delivery, so writing to the spool directory temporarily and then moving it to the home directory shouldn't actually happen. However, I don't truly remember how it worked under the hood, but that just doesn't seem right to me (too much chance for conflict). I do remember (back in the day) the headaches we would get when trying to debug a "lost mail" problems (with a centralized /var/spool/mail directory) and it turned out the user in question had created an mbox file which had next to nothing in it. :) -Rich

(I sent this last night, but to the wrong address.. argh) After an upgrade to FC5, and a rebuild and install of dovecot 1.0RC7, I've been getting a LOT of syslog messages like the following: Sep 26 21:47:55 myhost dovecot-auth: nss_ldap: reconnected to LDAP server ldap://ldap.mydomain.com after 1 attempt Now, everything is working fine as far as I can tell (it's only been a rocky day since the upgrade.. and that was littered with other LDAP related problems), but I was wondering why it was even using nss_ldap... I have dovecot configured to connect to LDAP directly. My dovecot.conf contains: auth default { # Space separated list of wanted authentication mechanisms: # plain login digest-md5 cram-md5 ntlm rpa apop anonymous gssapi mechanisms = plain ... passdb pam { } ... # LDAP database #passdb ldap { # Path for LDAP configuration file, see doc/dovecot-ldap.conf for example #args = #} ... # LDAP database userdb ldap { # Path for LDAP configuration file, see doc/dovecot-ldap.conf for example args = /etc/dovecot-ldap.conf } And I am wondering if I missed something obvious here... So give it lots of spindles, either in one big box or many small boxes like we do. Right now the only problem we have is the Dovecot proxy software sometimes disconnects imap sessions that it should not disconnect. [Dovecot] SSL_accept failed

Hello, I'm new to dovecot. I just installed it a few days ago on FreeBSD via the ports and got it up and running without too much trouble. Although yesterday I turned on the SSL/TLS features and tried to get secure connections to work. I don't get any error messages when launching dovecot, I saw it successfully create the SSL parameters after first enabling the feature yet I can't seem to get a successful connection. Normal non- ssl connections work fine. What happens: 1) my client claims to be attempting the connection. 2) things go on for some time with nothing happening 3) finally the dovecot log pops up with these messages dovecot: Sep 09 02:25:23 Warning: imap-login: SSL_accept() syscall failed: EOF [x.x.x.x] dovecot: Sep 09 02:25:23 Info: imap-login: Disconnected: rip=x.x.x.x, lip=x.x.x.x, TLS handshake dovecot: Sep 09 02:26:23 Info: imap-login: Disconnected: Inactivity: rip=x.x.x.x, lip=x.x.x.x, TLS handshake FYI: I've regenerated a fresh cert and key, just for dovecot and I'm using Mac OS X's Mail client. [Dovecot] Not getting new mail notification

Hey all, I'm having no luck getting new mail notification except in two mail folders (using maildir w/procmail delivery). I'm using three different clients (sylpheed-claws 1.9.14, Thunderbird 1.5.0.5 and a newer version of Horde). None of them are getting new mail in any except these two folders (inbox and 1 other). If I browse to the folders, still nothing. If I browse to the folders with Horde, I see the new mail, but not always in the other clients. It's hit or miss if the other clients get notified of the mail, but the mail is moved from the new folder. I'm subscribed to the folders and have them to be checked for new messages (in Thunderbird). I tried using dnotify, and things got worse (no folders updated). I've over 350 e-mails sitting in new folders right now: [robert@thunder Maildir]$ ls .*/new | wc 397 332 12925 One interesting item I noticed is that if I touch a file in a new directory (or vi it), I immediately get notification of the mail (and it gets moved from new to cur). Hi - I have searched the docs for v1.0 RC7, but cannot find what I'm looking for. What I'm ultimately wanting to do is have Dovecot preform some action, or a trigger, when the user is successfully authenticated. Even more specifically, I'd like to run another SQL query to record a date/time for last authenticated login. Short from running a script during logrotate, or constantly tailing the log, is there any mechanism in Dovecot that would allow me to do this? Again, all I'm looking to do is to record the last date/time that someone successfully logged in, into a MySQL database. Thanks! -dant

[Dovecot] DSpam mysql-plugin (was DSpam plugin)

After wrestling with Johannes's original plugin, I had a go at the mysql plugin that Tim wrote, as described here: http://members.plug.org.au/~linuxalien/dokuwiki/projects:dovecot-mysql-dspa… I kept getting "Error: imap dump-capability process killed with signal 11" when attempting to start dovecot with this plugin. I traced the error to line 656 of master-settings.c in the dovecot source, in the 'get_imap_capability' function. In this function, it notes: "Reloading configuration. Don't try to execute the imap process again. Too risky and the wait() call below will break it anyway. Just use the previous capability list we already had generated." I changed the source so that the function always ran " set->imap_generated_capability = p_strdup(settings_pool, generated_capability); return TRUE;" instead of going through the function where it had on the wait described in the comments. Now, voila. Dovecot starts without complaint, the plugin works, the delivery and moving of email works. I'm assuming I've screwed something up by skipping the rest of this get_imap_capability function. My C skills are a few years rusty. What are the ramifications of skipping the remainder of this function? Thanks, Michael

We're in the process of moving to Dovecot. We're currently running UW-IMAP live with Dovecot 1.0rc7 on alternate ports for testing. We're set to switch to Dovecot tomorrow morning, and I'm sure I'll have lots of stupid questions once that happens. So I guess you can consider this message an introduction as well as a preemptive apology. Our setup: our mailserver is a SunFire 880 running solaris 8. Inboxes are stored in /var/mail, home directories are in /home. Mailboxes are mbox. Both /home and /var/mail are NFS-mounted from a NetApp filer. Indexes are stored in /dovecot (this is a partition on local disk). We have about 500 users accesing their mail on this server. Supported clients are Outlook, Mac Mail, and Thunderbird (both PC and Mac). Many people access their mail via webmail (IMP Horde) instead of or in addition to using a normal client. We also have a few people who use Pine. Authentication is against the local shadow file. I’m writing an immune system based antispam filter. I need to detect when a user move a message to her spam folder (to inform the filter). I I found “cmd_copy” in imap library so I detect the copy event. But at this level I wasn’t able to find info about which mail and which user copy this message. My question is: Were I can find user Info to know how is moving this message in the spam folder. Ideally if I can have information about message (content or id) will be perfect. Thanks

Here's a strange one. I have Dovecot set up on Solaris 9. The auth portion of the config is straight out of the box. Using PAM. We have most users in a dbm file which is just a series of key/value pairs: key is a username, and value is a string equivalent to a shadow entry. nsswitch.conf entry: passwd files dbm. For historical reasons, some users have a classic 13-character Unix crypt password hash, while others have a 34-character MD5 hash. Here's the situation: User location pw Hash Auth succeeds/fails ---------------------------------------------- files crypt succeeds dbm crypt succeeds files MD5 succeeds dbm MD5 FAILS After two days of research, trussing, and etc, I am stumped. Does anyone have a thought? -Brian

I already have several mailboxes (From another Dovecot server) but my new install does not see them. I'm running Ubuntu 6.06 w/ Dovecot 1.0.beta3. When I try to login, I get the following in the log. Greetings. I'm having an issue with dovecot that I'm hoping that someone can help me with. Most of the mail in my INBOX has mysteriously disappeared and I'd like to get it back. It's all in the ~/Maildir/cur directory and dovecot reports that 1048 messages exist when given the SELECT imap command. Hi, Is there a way of limiting the number of IMAP connections (i.e. processes) per user? Despite asking users to set their email client settings to limit themselves to 2 connections, some still have this set to 10 or more. In pop3-login/client-authenticate.c, when sasl_server_auth_begin() is called, it does so with the service name of "POP3". GSSAPI uses this service name when obtaining its service credentials. The problem is that according to http://www.iana.org/assignments/gssapi-service-names , the service name should instead be simply "pop". This causes GSSAPI authentication to fail when used with a POP3 account. I'm currently setting up a large mail system, with different services split out onto different machines. What I want is this: machine1: dovecot smtp auth, no pop/imap machine2: dovecot lda, no pop/imap machine3: pop/imap, nothing else machine3 is obviously not the issue. I'm trying to set up Johannes's DSpam plugin for dovecot. I've compiled rc2 and the plugin, and have things installed OK. I have a X-DSPAM-Signature in my message that is delivered to Inbox. Whenever I try to move this to my spam folder (I changed source to say 'Spam' instead of 'SPAM'), my client (Thunderbird) pops up 'The current command did not succeed. The mail server responded: dspam failed.' I've set '#define DEBUG 1' in the plugin and see this in my 'messages' log. Occasionally, though not every time I move a message, I see this in my 'messages' log. Hi, I installed a Emailserver based on Debian Sarge, exim (4.50-8sarge2) and dovecot (1.0.rc2-1bpo1). Delivering Mails with Exim to my Maildir works fine. I think that it depend on my mail architecture : _One NFS server _two dovecot POP/IMAP server (for pop and webmail access) : the POP/IMAP don't run dovecot LDA _two delivery serveur with exim and dovecot LDA : they communicate with external relay servers and deliver mail in box. Hello all, First, the vital stats: FreeBSD 6.1-STABLE, dovecot 1.0.rc7 from ports. I have run into a vexing little problem that has brought my deployment of a shiny new dovecot server to a screeching halt. Using 'periodic' I've configured regular backups to occur using 'dump'. I have a monthly level 0, a weekly level 4, and a daily level 8. These dumps take advantage of snapshots to ensure they are taking a backup of a consistent filesystem. As part of the beta testing, I decided to delete my maildir and attempt to recover from the dumps. Recovery went well, as dump/restore is a wonderful piece of software. I did a quick check at the file level to be sure my mailbox looked like it had when I took the last level 8 dump, and everything looked good. The problem came when I started up Thunderbird to take a look at my mail. When I selected a message, say one that said "knockout daily run output", I'd be reading a different message entirely, like a recent email from my boss! Most of the messages were like this - hopelessly scrambled! I tried just deleting the account in Thunderbird and connecting again, but that didn't change a thing. What happened!? Dump has faithfully restored the files, including the dovecot indexes... so why are my messages scrambled? Thanks for your help, Paul

Hi All, I've just upgraded to Dovecot 1.0.rc7-1 with Postfix 2.3 on Debian Etch and it's trashing my email. I get lots of the errors below as well as other strange ones in my logs. I don't use NFS. Mail comes in via Postfix, gets passed through MailScanner, gets passed back to Postfix and then Postfix passes it to Dovecot's LDA via: mailbox_command = /usr/lib/dovecot/deliver Deliver then chokes and get's a little upset. Is there anyway to wipe out all the indexes/uidlists etc and just have Dovecot regenerate them all with a clean slate? Has anybody seen this with dovecot LDA before? Any hints about troubleshooting it? Is the best plan just to copy my imap mail out, nuke the folders and then copy the mail back in again? I am trying to get Dovecot - Postfix - SASL to work. Hi, Im using dovecot version 0.99.11 and I'm facing a situation with one pop3 client. This is a fax application (faxmaker for windows) written by a third party that tries to login to the dovecot as USER username@domain. When the application tries to login that way, my dovecot rejects the auth. All the other pop3 clients (outlook, eudora,etc) in the system log in correctly because they do just USER username. The only failures related to the login (and I have debug enabled in dovecot) are: Sep 15 15:17:57 mail pop3-login: Aborted login [ipaddress] How ca I tell dovecot to ignore the domain part for that user? I am not using virtual support. Hello all, I am new to dovecot and have had a good experience so far. I'm using fetchmail - exim - dovecot - my email clients (mac os mail and thunderbird so far). I'm also using Ubuntu Server i.e. debian. I didn't like the inflexibility of mbox so I did a tweak to exim to deliver mail to a Maildir folder in my home directory on the server. I restarted Dovecot and it found it! Very nice but mysterious. I don't remember if I did anything to the dovecot.conf file. My clients balk at the ssl certificate that was created at install time. I see a little bit of documentation on SSL. I'll struggle with it. I'm going to look at more client setups like evolution and a webmail client. Can anyone recommend a good ajax-driven webmail client? Dovecot is good software. I'm happy I found it.

Hi, Trying to simplify the postfix/dovecot/saslauthd setup with less than 10 users, I was looking for some way to NOT duplicate the username/password setup. Currently I need to use a seperate file for dovecot as I do for saslauthd. (One is a simple shadow-alike file, the other the sasldb) I know that postfix 2.3 can use dovecot directly for sasl authentication, and that would be a neat solution, but we're stuck with postfix 2.2. I was wondering if anyone ever succeeded in making dovecot use saslauthd for authentication so that saslauthd becomes the authoritative source for password authentication for virtual users. (both for smtp auth as pop3/imap) My other idea to simplify was using something like pam_unix, but modified to use a seperate file (not /etc/shadow) and use pam in both dovecot and saslauthd. But I can't find something like that, pam_unix is fixed, and pam_userdb is something I'd like to avoid. Any ideas ? Hello, a couple of months ago, also thanks to help from this list, I set up postfix and dovecot for virtual domains on a Centos 4 remote server. I have postfix set up to deliver all email for marco(a)domain1.net to /var/mail/vhosts/marco_domain1.net/ Everything is fine, as far as postfix is concerned: all email to marco(a)domain1.net goes in that mailbox, dovecot sees it, etc... Now I need to add sorting all incoming email in subfolders: mail from SOME_LIST to marco_domain1.net/SOMELIST/ (lots of other rules for custom folders) all else to main inbox I have to do all this sorting with procmail for two reasons: - I want to have as little sw as possible on that server, and update it semi-automatically, if possible only from the official repositories: procmail has these characteristics - I want to reuse as is, with the smallest possible amount of translation, filtering, etc, the very long and complicated procmailrc files I have built over the years on several servers. My question is how do I have to modify (with a perl or similar script) the procmail rules so that they sort messages in maildir folders which: - are fully compatible with dovecot (and Squirrelmail) - (very useful, but not mandatory) can be viewed in categories and subcategories from Squirrelmail: personal/ friends/ family/ mailing_lists/ postfix/ dovecot/ .... work/ - *all* the messages, no matter how they were sorted on the server, can still be downloaded with fetchmail from home Note that I am not asking anybody to write the script for me (if you want to share a ready one, of course, I'll be glad). I just need to know what is the exact syntax/ folder naming conventions I have to follow to make all I wrote above happen. Hi all, I've just configured Dovecot as my IMAP server in my Ubuntu machine. Everything works fine: I can access my IMAP folders remotely, I have also installed Squirrel webmail to access it thru the web... Although I'm most of the time working with Ubuntu, sometimes I boot my machine with Windows XP. However, since the server is not running then (because I'm not running Ubuntu), the only thing I can do is read the files directly. Is there any client able to display the messages directly from the files and folders stored in Maildir? We recently switch from up-imapd to dovecot But many users are reporting that they cannot access certain mail folders. The log file has: imap(dws): Sep 14 00:06:19 Error: File isn't in mbox format: /home/research/dws/mail/TaskDL The files in the logs are "MBX mail folders", not "ASCII English text" as are the folders that can be read under Outlook. Can anyone tell me how to fix this? This is a serious problem in switching. I've read the FAQ and documentation but it doesn't speak to this specific problem. Hi, I'm just starting using dovecot, and find it powerfull and really fast, and have a so configuration, It's just making me happy :) (after tests, and test, and tests). So thanks you for the great job. I've got a question : POP get all my mail in all my maildir subfolder. I find it great and was searching for a pop daemon doing that (and discoved it accidentaly). Hi, I've been using Dovecot successfully for a while and I've recently encountered an issue : I got to work today and half the emails, were deleted... and after careful investigation : - On Monday it seems, the emails magically vanished .. (what I've been told) - My backup from Tuesday morning at 3am, indicates that all the files (mailbox) are intact but the subscription file is missing half the entries. - At noon, on Tuesday, half the subscriptions are still missing and half the files now also missing. Any ideas, known issues, suggestions? I have some code that can return the disk quota from AFS that I would like to add to the existing file system quota plugin (or perhaps create a new plugin) but I am having a hard time deciphering what each function should return and the data formats (e.g. kilobytes versus bytes). Hi all I have this interesting issue. I installed dovecot on FreeBSD 6.1. The install went well. I'm trying to get it to use a mysql database that postfix is already using to authenticate. When I use this in dovecot.conf userdb mysql { args = /usr/local/etc/dovecot/dovecot-mysql.conf } passdb mysql { args = /usr/local/etc/dovecot/dovecot-mysql.conf } I get this error. auth(default): Unknown passdb driver 'mysql' (typo, or Dovecot was built without support for it? Check with dovecot --build-options) This is strange because I did compile it with mysql support. Any ideas here?

I have some emails where the Subject line has been wrapped, and subsequent lines are indented with TAB characters. When I view this email using Thunderbird 1.5.0.5 on Windows XP, with Dovecot 1.0.rc7 running on CentOS 4.3, this TAB character shows up as a funny character in the subject line, as displayed by the Thunderbird. My question is: Should Dovecot be detecting mail header continuation lines that start with a TAB, and stripping the TAB (converting to a space)? I *think* that's what the RFCs implied when I read up on this a few months ago, but I may easily be mis-remembering. A second somewhat off-topic question: When the automated system that sends out these messages sends them to me directly, this problem does not occur, because the email titles are not wrapped. However, when I receive these emails via a mailman mailing list, mailman prepends the text "[Buildbot]" on the front of the title, thus making the title long enough to require wrapping. As such, I imagine that it's mailman that is indenting the Subject continuation line with the TAB character. Is there an issue in mailman - should mailman be indenting with e.g. a SPACE character, or is mailman's action perfectly legal? Thanks for any pointers.

Hello, I want to use PostgreSQL to store my Dovecot users. I setup a very basic configuration, following word for word this page http://wiki.dovecot.org/DovecotPostgresql and it works ... almost. In fact, it works if I use PLAIN password scheme in my database. However, I would like to store them encrypted. But, if I replace the password field for my user with {HMAC-MD5}-... (the password generated by dovecotpw), it doesn't work. In the second example, I didn't get any Credentials, whereas in the first case (PLAIN scheme), the Credentials output correspond to the 'dovecotpw' generated password (as in `dovecotpw -s HMAC-MD5 -p jonpwd`). I don't know if it's normal or not. So, I'm not sure what to do next :/ I use this kind of 'auth mechanism'/'password scheme' on another computer, with passwd-like files, and it works. [Dovecot] Mail does not arrive at my server.

I run under FC5. I want to setup a mail server with postfix (already runnung) and dovecot. Once this i working I add spamassassin and clamav. I setup postfix and can send emails. When replying to these emails they do not get to my server (I checked in the Maildir directory of the user, there is no file) The server has 2 NICs. there is a firewall where I opened the port 143 (that is for IMAP?) 0 0 ACCEPT tcp -- eth1 * 0.0.0.0/0 0.0.0.0/0 state NEW tcp dpt:143 flags:0x17/0x02 the only change I made to the dovecot.conf files is: protocols = imap I did not touch the rest as in the comments of the file it says # Default values are shown after each value, it's not required to uncomment # any of the lines. Any hint on what I am doing wrong is welcomed. Thanks in advance

Hello, I'm using a OpenLDAP server to store mail users infos like maildir location and password. This server is running on a separate machine and I'd like to protect the connection to it by using SSL/TLS. The server is configured so that it offers ldaps and it works with other clients. But I haven't found how to configure dovecot to use ldaps. Would someone please direct me to the right place or directly help how to? Greets, Jürgen

Hi I met problem developing plug-in under FreeBSD 6.1. First I tried to use internal plugins like quota and acl but I got: IMAP(xxx): module /usr/local/lib/dovecot/imap/lib01_acl_plugin.so: dlsym(acl_plugin_init) failed: Shared object "nss_dns.so.1" not found, required by "imap" This library doesn't exist on FreeBSD 6.1 Same story when u mention any plugin in dovecot.conf… Any ideas how to fix it? -- Yours Boris

[Dovecot] Namespace with a single mailbox (for spam)

Hi there. Perhaps this is answered somewhere, but a short search through the mailing list and Wiki yielded nothing. We have spam filtering set up for all users, with all messages over some spam threshold going to a separate mbox. There is one directory containing the spam mboxes of all users (call it "/var/spool/spam", right now), with the spam box of a user residing in /var/spool/spam/<user>. I am trying to achieve that, in IMAP, each user will see his spam mbox as a folder named "SPAM" or something like that (possibly under some new namespace), without creating a symbolic link for each user. Is there any facility for that? Specifically, I do not want to create a single namespace pointing to the directory, since that will cause each user to have to access his spam folder under a different name (e.g. #spam.<user>), and users will also see (although not be able to read) others' spam folders. Hi all, It looks like Dovecot 1.0rc7 reports the wrong content-type for messages with only a text/html body. An example of such a message is: --- From: mathijs(a)izecom.com Subject: test To: foobar(a)example.com Content-Type: text/html; test --- When I talk IMAP to Dovecot directly using telnet and fetch the bodystructure of this message, Dovecot replies: * 1 FETCH (BODYSTRUCTURE ("text" "plain" ("charset" "us-ascii") NIL NIL "7bit" 6 1 NIL NIL NIL)) I guess that should be 'text/html', not 'text/plain'. Hi, Folks, I recently migrated from courier-imapd to dovecot when I migrated a machine from rh9 to fc5. I managed to hit a snag with the 1.0b8 version of dovecot that's currently in fc5. With AppleMail 1.3 I was seeing most of my incoming mail go missing. To make a long story short, AppleMail was applying mail filters inappropriately (walking right past a 'stop processing' rule and moving my incoming mail into folders specified for Act-On actions). This made the AppleMail 1.3 client unusable with 1.0b8. Before complaining here I figured I ought to try the current version, and, sure enough, 1.0rc7 fails to cause AppleMail to go insane like 1.0b8 did. I'm not sure which change between b8 and rc7 is the important one, but rc7 seems to work well. I saw the pointer on the Wiki to the ATRPM's repository which had a current RPM, but looking at the included patches in their SRPM they seem to be doing things somewhat differently than the Fedora guys are (default settings, etc.), so, I figured for my machine I'd rather stay as close to the Fedora methodology to make future upgrades perhaps less painful. To that end I took the SRPM for b8 from fc5 and modified it as little as possible to make it work with 1.0rc7. One bugfix patch was left out as that seems to have been fixed in the Dovecot source during the interim period. [Dovecot] Create subfolder

I have dovecot on Fedora Core 5 and I want to create a subfolder. By default its impossible!!!! I setup dovecot for maildir and after I able to create a subfolder. But I cant receive my old and new email on this format. I read dovecot documentation at http://wiki.dovecot.org/QuestionsAndAnswers#head-35b621e067b7e72c1d1e47886f4 00a1a784bd95c and its write: For ordinary local Unix users, you may want to specify the mail environment as "maildir:%h/Maildir:INBOX=/var/mail/%n". There are two reasons. First, mail can be delivered there without consuming the user's disk quota on the home directory. Second, the user's home directory may prohibit access to any users other than the owner and the privileged user root. Having the INBOX outside the user's home directory permits mail delivery by programs running without root privileges, but belong to the group mail. I try it with maildir:%h/Maildir:INBOX=/var/mail/%n and dont work. I cant connect to my imap server. Help me please!!! Hugo

I have found the reason why i can not authenticate users using SHA1 passowds. Problem is dovecot stores sha1 as "sum of the password stored in base64" but mysql and exim store it in hex. I can not understand, how at presence of system users (passdb shadow and userdb passwd) and virtual (for example, user(a)host.domain.com as system user and user(a)domain.com as virtual) to allow virtual users to not enter a domain part of username at a login, and to allow system users to use a full name (user(a)host.domain.com)? I have read the documentation and default config - I can not understand, how it can be made? If the parameter "auth_username_format = %n" worked inside of separate passdb{} and userdb{} sections, it can be realized, but it does not work inside of them :( . --- M. Alhimenko.
